NEWS

This week (June 23-27), over 300,000 people voted in the first Internet "peoples' primary", organized by the MoveOn.org group. All nine Democratic presidential candidates competed and more people voted in two days than will vote next winter in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries combined. Democrats and others who hope to oppose the re-election of George Bush should realize the need to choose a candidate and support him or her now. Otherwise, the controlled corporate press and the pundits will choose the Democratic candidate for you early next year, simply by choosing which candidate out of the crowded field they decide to pay attention to. Bush will have a truly obscene amount of campaign money and will probably plan another invasion of a small country to boost his polls in early fall, 2004. The Internet, at present, is still a medium for grass-roots communication and organization. Use it now, before John Ashcroft shuts it down. Go to www.moveon.org, get involved, pick a candidate and send some money. Or if you are a people person, join the Democratic Party and help organize precincts. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku

TAX THE POOR, GIVE TO WHOM? Council Chair Dain Kane has proposed raising taxes by 37-percent on rental properties while slightly lowering homeowner and hotel rates to balance this year's budget. Why does the county need more money? What kind of budgeting, or lack there of, has been going on since the last tax increase making us broke all of the sudden? Is it fair, or even sensible, to make our most vulnera-

ble and least well-off population, the renters, pick up the tab? While the concept of taxing owners who are profiting from investments in multiple residential properties like other businesses makes sense, there seems little doubt the increases will be passed on to their tenants. Higher rents are likely to increase needs for social assistance. Perhaps Mr. Kane hopes that prospective homeowners will face less competition in bidding for a home but a blanket increase in cost for a necessity creates no penalty for simply passing it on to the consumer. Given existing pressure on affordable longterm rentals, we may find this tax increase ends up costing us more than it generates. To be effective, this plan would probably have to be implemented as a graduated state income tax. Looking at short-term rentals and nonresident homeowners for increased revenues is worth considering. Vacation rental operators are offering cooperation with the county in exchange for easier permitting. Let’s think about some other options before we send the bill to our renters. Daniel Grantham, Haiku

ehbrah@mauitime.com To Lil’ Whitey with Dreads, When you came up to my friends and me, listening to Sublime on the beach on the fourth, you knew all the lyrics. You was so Irie. When I suggested a short (1:19) song by The Presidents of the United States of America (how appropriate) you responded by saying, “Didn’t they have a song that sucked way back when?” Yo, whitey rasta, you may have only seen one “older” white boy sitting there. What you didn’t see behind my Maui Time was the fire brimming. I just about sprouted wings to fly your ass into the ocean to cleanse your youthful mouth of its sins. But I, being a more mature spiritual being, withheld action and took one long toke on your green spleef. (Who’s growing this crap on Maui, of all places, anyway). And one other thing. If Bradley Nowell is so cool, do ya think you can petition Haile Selassie to place Bradley in the pantheon of rasta saints? I don’t think so ‘cuz he was one dumbass white boy from Cali, bogarting the black man’s groove and worse, left behind a wife, a baby and a dog when he shot up crap ass Mexican brown and O.D.’d. He can’t even honestly hold Bob’s jock much less write legendary songs. Go home and learn more before you speak.

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.

Bioengineered Food (GMOs) 1. Do you eat bioengineered food? 2. How do you know if you're eating bioengineered food? 3. What percentage of food on store shelves is bioengineered or contains bioengineered ingredients? 4. Is bioengineered food safe? 5. How should bioengineered food be regulated?

ELOISE ENGMAN Founder - GMO Free Maui 1. I avoid them as much as possible. I try to eat all organic food. 2. Well, for starters, if you’re eating any soy, canola or corn products that are not organic, you’re almost certain to be eating GMOs. Then, if you’re eating SunUp or Rainbow papayas grown here in the islands, you’re definitely eating GMO papayas. 3. Over 70-percent of processed food in supermarkets has GMOs in it. You can’t count on produce not being genetically engineered either. I know they’ve genetically engineered potatoes; I don’t know what’s still on the market at this time. There are a lot of things that have been genetically engineered, some have failed. 4. In my opinion it’s not because one of the main products they do is herbicide ready crops, which means that the crop can be sprayed with herbicide and it doesn’t hurt the plant. Nonetheless, the plant absorbs the herbicide. Another thing is they engineer antibiotic resistant genes into GMOs so they can expose the plant to antibiotics and it survives. It’s been shown that these can break down in the human gut and recombine. This might be one of the things that’s fueling the increase in antibiotic resistance. 5. Well for one thing, it’s not being regulated at all by the FDA. The FDA ignored the warnings of their own scientists and the politically appointed administrators, which had been told to foster the biotech industry, and declared GMOs to be “substantially equivalent” to conventional food. The biotech industry has avoided years of testing which is required of new introductions into the food supply. So the FDA’s not regulating GMOs at all and the biotech companies in Hawaii and elsewhere have been given license. There’s hardly any oversight and basically, our gov-

ernment depends on information from the biotech industry itself and does no independent tests.

KEVIN MCMAHON Location Manager, Syngenta Seeds, Inc. - Kauai 1. Yes, I do eat bioengineered food. 2. Sometimes I know but I don’t always. 3. I don’t know for sure but I’m guessing that it may be as high as 60-percent. 4. I consider it safe. It’s regulated by several different government agencies. The work that we’ve done over here has not shown any significant differences between plants that have had the gene and plants that don’t. It’s been out for quite a number of years. There’s never been really the proof that it is harmful and when you’re trying to look at “Can you prove that it’s safe?” and if that requires a 20 or 30 year experiment to absolutely prove that there’s no possibility of there being any danger, you’re really stretching that length of proof of safety out too long. I think rather than finding proof of safety, they need to find proof of dangers. I don’t think that there’s been anything done that would prove to me that it was dangerous in any way. 5. I think it’s currently regulated fairly well by the USDA, the EPA and FDA. I certainly think that they need to stay on top of it and not get complacent on the regulations. But I think they’re doing well right now. I’m not opposed to labeling - I don’t find that it’s necessary but I’m not opposed to it.

TOM HILL President, Hawaii Farm Bureau 1. Yes, definitely. 2. Because a significant portion of the manufactured products in the United States contain bioengineered grains. 3. My assumption is that it is the same as the ratio of products that contain either corn or soybeans. 4. Absolutely. 5. It is currently well regulated by the FDA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

SOCRATES BUENGER Supermarket Customer - Kihei 1. No, not that I know of. 2. You know I don’t…I don’t know. 3. I don’t know. 4. I think so. I don’t know. 5. I don’t know. I have no clue. You know, this is something that I’ve never ever even thought about, not even once. Look, I eat at McDonald’s sometimes. Bioengineered something has got to be better than anything you could get from a drive-thru.

OPED

BY TED RALL

Sodomize This Sexual Liberation Comes Courtesy of the Supremes Sodomy is now the law of the land, but like other precious freedoms, it could be lost unless we citizens make the most of it. That's why I'm declaring an Era of National Sodomy (ENS). All patriotic Americans are hereby urged to track down a consenting adult of the same or opposite sex and shout out: "Hey! How about you and me hooking up for some newly-legalized oral and/or anal intercourse?" It is your patriotic duty to drop by your local high school nurse's office, pick up some free condoms and start sodomizing for America! In a decision that nearly makes up for Bush v. Gore, the nation's highest court has stricken a Texas statute that banned back-door love between gay men and women. (In a little-used loophole, the practice would have been legal between gay men and gay women.) "[Gays'] right to liberty under the Due Process Clause gives them the full right to engage in their conduct without intervention of the government," wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy for the 6-3 majority. "The Texas statute furthers no legitimate state interest which can justify its intrusion into the personal and private life of the individual." Laws banning sodomy between gays in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri were also overturned by the decision. But the greatest beneficiaries of the Supremes' judgement are the millions of heterosexual couples who risked violating sodomy laws in Idaho, Utah, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Until June 27, anyone caught engaging in sodomy--having oral or anal sex--in those states faced arrest, regardless of their sexual orientation. What a tragic waste of sexual potential those laws represent! According to a 1995 Playboy survey, 66-percent of Americans felt that they weren't getting enough oral sex. How much workplace inefficiency was created by employee frustration? How many soldiers, distracted by a state of horniness, fell in battle? At the time of the decision 82,996,177 people lived in the oppressive anti-sodomy belt; millions more traveled to and through those missionary-position-only regions of the country. These newly liberated people—in the United States of America, for God's sake!—no longer face arrest when they make love to their spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends in a manner previously pro-

NEWS

scribed by their state legislatures. And yes, it really did happen—more than 2,000 people were charged with sodomy law violations between 1988 and 1995 in Louisiana, where each faced a $2,000 fine plus a five-year prison term. Is it any wonder that two-thirds of the public was terrified of putting their naughty bits in legal jeopardy? Not everyone is celebrating our newfound freedoms to lick and poke as we see fit. An agitated Antonin Scalia decried the court's turn to "the so-called homosexual agenda," despite the fact that most people affected by the overturned anti-sodomy laws are in fact straight. Scalia was joined by William Rehnquist and Clarence Thomas, whose confirmation hearings revealed his taste in pornography to be as vanilla as his politics. Scalia's dissent warned that the ruling "effectively decrees the end of all morals legislation" and would lead to the legalization of gay marriage. "If the hallmarks of the test are consent and privacy," said Ken Connor of the right-wing Family Research Council, "then that throws the door open to any sexual behavior." Sounds fun! Anyone who frets about the sex acts of total strangers, much less calls for government regulation of private boning, needs to get a life. Nevertheless, let's not dismiss the concerns of our uptight and anal-retentive minority, as the rest of us roll around doing whatever we want with whomever we like in the privacy of our homes and by-the-hour motel rooms. These are dark days for the neo-Puritan sect. Before the Supreme Court turned Communist on them, America was a place where the depressing thought that people were somewhere out there having a good time was balanced out by the satisfying knowledge that they faced prison time if the fuzz ever nailed them. Now they've lost that comfort and their horny spouses and mistresses are demanding they make up for lost time in the oral and anal sex department. Why not reach out to the right-wingers in your area, and invite them over for some nice, relaxing oral and/or anal sex? I know what you're thinking, but remember--everyone looks liberal in the dark. BY IAN HOUSTON

COCONUT WIRELESS MONDAY, JUNE 30 A sad day for all as Maui Brews calls it quits after five years of Monday Night Football, dollar drink Wednesdays and all around good times. Bummer deal. The good ol' days are no more. Speaking of no more, say good bye to the four-month quarantine for pets coming to Hawaii. That's right, no more emotional good bye's at the airport as fluffy is taken away in a portable kennel to suffer through God knows what for a quarter of a year. If pets pass certain criteria, they can be released in five days or sooner, which is less time than it takes to get a new fearless leader into position at the Maui Visitor's Bureau. The MVB announced today that Terryl Vencl will take over director duties for the Oahu bound Marsha Weinert. After a short trip to Japan with Gov. Lingle, she will step into the roughly $90,000 per year job on July 15. Lucky for her, she wont have to deal with the ACLU's newest case against the city of Honolulu for its hand in a refusal to allow gay groups to participate in the July 5 "Family Day Parade". The city, which is a co-sponsor of the event according to the ACLU, did not strike down the main sponsor's decision to exclude gay groups. The Hawaii Christian Coalition had major issues with allowing their fellow Hawaiians to celebrate the idea of family. Coalition (doesn't that sound quasi-militant?) representative Garrett Hashimoto said that, as the main sponsor, they can

exclude who they want and that it would be inappropriate to include a gay lifestyle promoter in a children's parade. Well, I guess the coalition is sending the right message: love your fellow man, oh, unless your fellow man loves his fellow man. In that case, no, no he can't play with us. Let's see what the entrance criteria for next week's Christian surf competition "Walking on Water" will be. Okay, all those going to heaven are in heat one, everybody else, head to the back.

TUESDAY, JULY 1 A mystery cat on the loose in Olinda gulch or a gas tax increase. What's scarier to you? Even the mangled traps and fresh dung of an unknown feline can't shake the horror of shelling out yet more money at the pump. Wow, $2.30 for a gallon of gas. Just an immediate side effect of the new county budget plan that takes effect today. Soon to come, a hike in property taxes, vehicle registration and trash collection. But hey, look at it this way, your money will be going to road construction so maybe the ongoing Pali endeavor at Ma'alaea, rapidly approaching its tenth month of "progress", will be finished in the near future. Molokai is taking it in the tailpipe worse than us with gas prices hitting $2.43.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 2 Welcome home "Dog"! That's right, we know you missed us. Hawaii bounty hunter "Dog" Chapman finally made it home from Mexico tonight after two-weeks of what was undoubtedly a good time in a Mexican prison. What was

"Dog" thrown in the slammer for south of the border? What else, bounty hunting. You see, bounty hunting (arresting criminals) is illegal in Mexico. While "Dog" said the Mexican authorities were just doing their job, isn't there a hint of irony here? Luckily, "Dog" met all the requirements of the new pet quarantine so he didn't have to spend much time at the airport. Had he come two days earlier, who knows. Away from Mexican authorities and back to Honolulu police. Along with state and federal enforcement offers, Maui PD kicked off a multiple island harvest of illegal marijuana today. Coincidentally, six brush fires sparked up this afternoon as an assumed effort to interfere with the harvest. All that resulted from the burning were some very happy mynah birds who happened to fly through the smoke from the fires and were later seen at Costco buying an industrial size box of corndogs and a massive bag of Funions. In all, more than 15,000 marijuana plants were hauled in.

THURSDAY, JULY 3 A group of homeless "squatters" were given an odd handout today. Not food, not money, but trespassing notices. The lot on Kenui Street in Lahaina, appraised to be worth about $4 million, has served as an occasional home for some of West Maui's homeless for nearly a decade and has everything from barbecue grills to individually gated camps. The owners are apparently concerned with the fire hazards that accompany the mini-settlement. We shall see if the soon to come West Maui Resource Center can open up in time to accommodate the once again "homeless" homeless population. As some of Maui's less-fortunates are forced to look for a new place to set up camp, a 52-year-old Maui man will have five years of accommodations courtesy of the Maui Correctional Center for his, get this, fifth DUI arrest. You know, one DUI - that's bad luck. Two DUIs, that's just coincidence. Three, we're starting to see a pattern. Four, come on. Now,

five. Maybe we should do something about this guy. John Jarnesky, Jr. has had an impressive drinking and driving career that spans 21 years. His decision to retire as Maui's official drunken driver today came as a surprise to many. "I'm getting too old for this," he said. "It's time to take care of responsibilities in my life." So officially, 52-years-old is when you need to stop getting arrested for drunken driving and start taking life seriously. Write that down.

FRIDAY, JULY 4 Happy anniversary America! Exactly 227 years ago today, democracy and liberty joined hands, walked down the aisle, said, "I do" and haven't agreed on a thing since. Hey, if these two can stay together for this long, there's hope for everyone. Honolulu's 13-year-old golf phenom Michelle Wie gave us more to cheer about as she made the cut at her first U.S. Women's Open. Despite a rumored confrontation with her playing partner, Danielle Ammaccapane, after walking across her putting line, she went on to tie for 39th. Wie's father later denied the alleged chest bump from 16-year tour veteran and there were no fireworks on the course.

SATURDAY, JULY 5 Happy fifth of July. Hangovers for everyone after a night of celebrating our independence. To add to many Hawaiians' headaches, new statewide tow-in surfing rules took effect today upsetting both paddling surfers and towin enthusiasts. The rules allow tow-in surfers access to some breaks that are popular paddle spots forcing surfers to not only dodge bodies in the water but now personal watercrafts zipping in and out of sets. The tow-in crowd is apparently upset with the new certification requirements in order for them to be able to surf big waves. I don't know, if you're getting towed into threefoot waves, you're doing something wrong. Now, tow-in surfers, you stay offshore and paddlers, you stay near shore. Was that so tough?

SUNDAY, JULY 6 Governor Linda Lingle took off for Japan today so you know what that means: while the Governor's away, nobody has to go to work. Let's give that a go. MTW

Retailers in Los Angeles, New York and Miami say more and more young, urban, heterosexual men are choosing to dress in women's tight, low-slung jeans and to use stylish lotions, fragrances and hair-care colors and products, according to June reports in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times. Some marketers call men who are eager to embrace their feminine sides "Metrosexuals" and point to English soccer star David Beckham (who braids his hair and paints his fingernails) as an icon. On July 15, the Bravo cable channel will air a makeover show, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS Police in Scotia, N.Y., arrested Malinda Kelly in March on several charges but only after they had scurried around for several hours trying to find her "stolen" car and her 3-month-old son, who was inside. The next day, Kelly's story fell apart. Actually, said police, she had forgotten where she had left the car, which was idling, with the child inside, while she ran down the street to burglarize her uncle's home. (She came away with some money, but meanwhile lost her own money when a stranger took her purse from the idling car.)

AWESOME! DIFFERENT STROKES‌ Anthony Scott Ward, 40, and Melissa Coleman, 27, were arrested in Prestonburg, Ky., following a Memorial Day incident at a playground (with kids nearby), in which Coleman was bound face down on a picnic table, being paddled by Ward with a boat oar, in what authorities described as consensual "foreplay." Police recovered a cache of bondage items from the couple, including ceremonial hoods, handcuffs, prosthetic sexual tools, ropes, chains, collars, clamps, vibrating devices, lubricants and a cattle prod.

Jessica Parks graduated from high school in Oakland County, Mich., in May, with high grades, a varsity letter in cheerleading, and other entirely typical achievements of high-performing teens, all done without benefit of arms, which she has been without since birth. Among her special skills: putting her contact lenses in with her toes, and driving her car with no special equipment, just one foot on the gas and one on the steering wheel. And in June, NewsChannel 4 in Oklahoma City featured Laura Stringfellow's dog Faith, whose front legs failed to develop and so now, at age seven months, has learned to walk and chase cats while on her hind legs.

According to a May lawsuit filed against the all-girls Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Conn., Catholic Sister Linda Cusano repeatedly wrestled a student to the floor in a secluded office in incidents in 1991 and 1992, for sexual purposes and to impress upon the student that she needed to join the convent upon graduation and submit herself to God. Cusano was known by students as "the recruiter" because of her aggressive (but more mainstream) encouragement toward sisterhood.

A Southport, England, driver showed a judge a note from his doctor certifying that a blood clot had erased his short-term memory and thus that his 30 parking tickets should be dismissed because he can never remember where he parked. The Texas Legislature passed a bill to ban doctors' performing surgery while intoxicated, except in an emergency. Officials in Lagos, Nigeria, announced that people ticketed for driving recklessly to avoid the city's notorious gridlock will not be able to drive again until certified "mentally sound" by a psychiatric clinic.

The "If It Can't Kill You, It Ain’t Extreme" Challenge Extreme Surfing World Champion Garrett McNamara announced the "If It Can't Kill You, It Ain’t Extreme" Challenge, which will kick off this month in Tahiti and continue around the world through the end of 2003. In a bid to reclaim the soul of surfing extreme waves purely for the love of it, McNamara and his partner Ikaika Kalama will join a select crew of extreme surfers around the planet as they surf the biggest waves they can find. While still images and video of contest days will be taken, the challenge will be a “secret” of sorts in an attempt to keep the surfing as pure as possible. "We're not going out there looking for sponsorship, prize money and media mayhem," McNamara said. "We're putting the money up ourselves to get out there, find the biggest waves we can and push each other to take the level up a notch. "There's a handful of us who surf extreme waves simply because we love to. So we want to get together in a variety of locations and challenge each other to find the ultimate ride. We want to get out from under any rigid contest rules and restrictions and open it up to extreme surfing - pure and simple." The format will be similar to a "skins" event. There will be a maximum of five teams at each venue. Every team will put $1,000 on the table to compete. Competitors will take to the waves on the biggest day at each location and every ride will be videotaped. At the conclusion of each

one-day contest, competitors will meet to review the tape and then vote on the biggest and best rides. Prize money will be distributed for best overall performance of the day, biggest wave surfed, heaviest barrel and a booby prize. "If It Can't Kill You, It Ain’t Extreme" will travel to Tahiti, Australia, France, California and Hawaii between July and the end of the Hawaiian winter 2003/04. Confirmed competitors include: Garrett McNamara, Ikaika Kalama, Bruce Irons, Darrel "Flea" Virostko, Josh Loya, Kenny "Skindog" Collins, Shawn "Barney" Barron, Shane Dorian, Noah Johnson, Jamie Sterling, Donny Darnell, Manoa Drollet and Raimana Van-Bastolaer. Other invited surfers include: Vetea David, Arsene Horhoe, Didier Pinhin, Peter Mel, Adam Replogle, Makua Rothman, Ryan Rawson and Troy Alotis. Still and video footage from the challenge will be made available to select outlets. Also, those photographers and videographers lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time will be permitted to capture the moment. This past winter at “Jaws”, McNamara successfully rode what has become known as the most incredible tube ride ever surfed. Heralded as the best day in big-wave surfing history, Garrett's wave peaked at 50-feet before throwing over into a life-threatening cavernous barrel. Without question, it was the craziest ride of the season (see attached photo). Having won the Tow-In World Cup in January of 2002, Garrett is the Tow-In World Champion, a title he will defend this winter. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

JULY 10, 2003

As Maui Time Weekly photographer Kirsten Guenther and I met at a small café in Kihei to discuss our impending interview with Bébé Aschard Rose, renowned Circus Queen and local artist, we realized we may have been slightly intimidated by the scope of the situation. How do we prepare ourselves for the what-is-sure-to-be outrageousness of a woman who travels around the world with a circus sideshow of freaks, herself delighting in such acts as swallowing live scorpions and walking up a ladder of razor sharp swords? How do I, with my limited high school art class knowledge, attempt to illuminate the artistry born of a French woman who has created multi-layered masterpieces for nearly 20 years? How will Kirsten ever

have enough film to shoot the foreseeable overload of stimulus in the home of the creators of the infamous Jim Rose Circus?! We decided (after the liquid courage brought on by a couple of shots of Jack Daniels) that we would simply wing it. We approached the demure landscape that is the quintessential suburban neighborhood of south Maui and were struck by the sheer normality of Chez Rose. Modest, yet expansive, the house of Jim and Bébé Rose sits squarely on a well-manicured lot amidst similar homes of respectable folk representing the upper-middle class of Kihei, who most likely have jobs akin to business owners, hotel and resort management and medical professionals. Bébé affably greeted us at the door

with intricately painted stairs leading up to the main house in full view behind her. As we climbed the decorative steps, we were immediately impressed not only by the artful hue of the living room, but also by the delicious aroma of a fresh apple tart (à la Bébé!) baking away in the oven. As I picked up on the sweet sounds of my favorite CD gently playing, and was introduced with equal warmth to the charismatic Jim Rose himself, Kirsten and I smiled at each other and relaxed. We love these people already. In the living room, rich burgundy and brown, dark violet and deep emerald covered the floor, which was finely handpainted by Bébé with rococo borders and cracks in faux gold, resulting in a modern-

ized antiquey feel. As we wandered awestruck from room to room, we noticed that not one square inch of living space had been left unaffected by Bébé’s creative charms. Religious emblems, Hawaiian images and old-world European detailing interspersed with circus memorabilia and the odd artifacts collected on their travels, created an intriguing yet sumptuous, juxtaposed ambience. The tableau art of Bébé also incorporates these concepts with painting and wood-staining, using image reproductions and trompe l’oeil effects. These days, she enjoys using found objects, especially old Hawaiian photos and maps, and anything with little doors or windows to open. “I

THE HEART OF BÉBÉ’S ART

think doors add an element of surprise – you never know what’s behind them – and I like that mystery of life, the unknown. It’s thrilling!” Bébé also utilizes fleurs-de-lis, rich saturated colors and "stuff that has the old circus feel." She loves anything that has to do with travel, like trunks or postage stamps, as well as antiques and toys that have rust, "so they feel like someone's lost treasures."

Bébé Aschard grew up in a large, Catholic family in the French countryside of Saumur. Her father worked for a circus, “basically driving the horses around the country in France before I was born” while her mother stayed at home taking care of Bébé and her six brothers and three sisters. “My mother was continuously pregnant for longer than a decade!” The fact that they didn’t have money meant, “if you wanted something, you made it. Boy or girl, it didn’t matter. Everybody cooked and cleaned and sewed,” she said. They went to church every Sunday and even in so large a family, Bébé and her siblings played together and to this day, remain close. Inspired by Salvador Dali, a sister who "was always drawing, always sewing, always doing something artsy" and a brother who was an art director for the well-respected Royal de Luxe, Bébé came to the United States as an adventurous and curious 19-year-old student of art. “I was supposed to be here for a year, go to school, learn the language and then go back to France and figure out what I was going to do with my life. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just knew that working in an office wasn’t the career I was looking for.” Having come from an eclectic, working family that also includes a fashion designer, a Boeing architect , a cop, a construction contractor, a special education teacher, an engineer and a couple of circus performers, Bébé realized that her creative expression was a chef-d'oeuvre waiting to happen. “I mean it was frustrating because growing up, seeing street performers... I’ve always been drawn to that.” She met Jim Rose a few months later at a club in Washington, D.C. and they fell in love and married shortly thereafter. So with her family’s circus history, and Jim’s similar fascination with street performances, Bébé says that working with the circus Jim created “was very organic.” Something Bébé discovered as she was happily adjusting to the culture of the U.S. was the garage sale. "We didn't have that in Europe then," she explains. "So I liked to go around and see what was out there. It was cheaper and you never knew what you would find." She started collecting furniture and painting pieces, quickly learning to let go of the sometimes stifling act of artistic possession as the circus became more popular and Jim and Bébé began to move and travel more. Living in Seattle also proved to be another stylistic turning point, as Bébé

was turned on to the more Art-Deco trend happening there. “In France, we didn’t have that very American futuristic ‘50s style, which was such a cool style.” Now, after several whirlwind years of the Jim Rose Circus touring the world with her extended family of performance artists and the exhausting popularity garnered by their national television show, Bébé is pleased to once again find time to enjoy the simple pleasure of making her art , which includes creating the environment of her beautiful home. “When you go to the Jim Rose Circus, you go into the world of Jim Rose. When you come here, you come into my world.” And what a wonderful world it is. Currently, you can view Bébé’s art islandwide at all locations of the Maui Hands galleries - including Queen Kaahumanu Center, Makawao and Paia as well as at the Maui To Go gallery in Lahaina at 505 Front St. She also has select pieces at Biasa Rose Boutique in Paia, Altitude in Makawao and at Haleakala Trading Co. in Kihei. Puttin’ on the Ritz When pampering yourself becomes necessary, before you sign up for that massage, spa treatment or aromatherapy facial, consider a luxurious breakfast at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. Nothing spells luxury and relaxation like a sampling of their fine mimosa menu over homemade breakfast pastries and fresh fruits in the plantation-style dining room of the Terrace Restaurant. Their elegant and simplistic approach will impress a sense of home-style comfort and pique your morning appetite, while the views impart daydreams of the hours to come. Craig Kahila, manager of The Terrace, and bartender Gian Saetti put their heads together to create the unique offerings found at this morning bar. “Having a Bloody Mary or Mimosa at the beginning of the day is a great reminder to guests they are on vacation,” Craig comments. Very true, Craig. It’s also an instant way to make yourself feel like you are on vacation when you’re not, as in my case. The service you receive at the terrace is amazing, as you might anticipate at the Ritz. Your every desire is catered to, every linen napkin is tended to, your drinks never empty and you begin to feel as if life was meant to be this way. I began to feel as though my server was my personal assistant. She became psychic with my wishes. “Another one?” she queried. “Perhaps the Aloha Mimosa with fresh squeezed guava juice?” “How did you know?” I thought to myself, as I ordered accordingly. Don’t leave The Terrace without trying one of their eight available Bloody Mary selections from Classic to The

Southwestern or their exquisite Mimosas, fresh squeezed juices in a variety of trysts with Ritz Champagne. My recommendation is the Kama’aina, a delicious mix of spicy tomato and clam juices with horseradish, and a splash of soy sauce, a touch of ginger and Grey Goose Vodka. The ginger and shoyu contribute a refreshing and savory touch to the hair of the dog. But the Island Mimosa won the prize with the mingling of passion, orange and guava juices with the special Ritz Champagne. The Terrace truly shines in its ability to pair these well-designed beverages with an elegant spread of morning dishes. Their breakfast buffet is in its summer prime with daily themed elements like Tuesday’s “Breakfast on the Farm” featuring Farmer’s Cheese Blintzes, Amaretto Cherry Compote, and Ham and Fresh Asparagus quiche. Or Friday’s “Hawaiian Plantation-Style Breakfast” with Cinnamon and Sugar-Glazed Malasadas, Warm Coconut Syrup and Haupia Cream, Slow Cooked Corned Beef Hash and Béarnaise Benedict with Local Style Fried Rice. The buffet also features a Belgian waffle bar and several ala carte items. If you are pushed for time or have a light appetite, they also offer a continental buffet. Take a moment to smell the roses, or the fresh baked croissants. A relaxing morning at the Ritz could be your answer to reducing some life-shortening stress on this island. A little birdie told me The Ritz-Carlton also offers a package deal for kama’aina that includes your breakfast at The Terrace. With complimentary self-parking and valet parking, they make your island getaway only a mimosa away from tomorrow morning. The Terrace at Ritz Carlton is located at One Ritz-Carlton Drive in Kapalua, call them at 669-6200. MTW

Patrick Cambell, owner of and winemaker for Laurel Glen Vineyards in Sonoma has started a winemaking practice that is starting to turn some heads. Established in 1981, Laurel Glen is known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon blends from Cambell’s estate vineyards in Sonoma. But Cambell has lead a pack of winemakers into the new millennium and south of the border with winemaking ideas that will intrigue any type of wine drinker. Laurel Glenn has recently, since 1995, started producing a new wine out of South America. The conditions for grape growing in parts of South America are ideal. The results are a darker and fruitier dense wine that will eventually show true character to the vine. The wine of the week is the Terra Rosa Cabernet Sauvignon Valle Central, Chile 2000. This wine is made with expertise at a price point we can enjoy daily. The wine is packed full with an impressive aroma and a dark rich body. The finish is spicy and smoky with a color that stains the teeth. MTW

Wine & Food 22nd Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival

The 22nd Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, kicking off today and running through Sunday, July 13, features four full days of fine wine tasting and culinary delights from around the world. This prestigious event boasts over 100 international wineries, 16 of Hawaii’s top chefs and special guests to present this year’s theme, “Flavor Map of the World – Charting a Course for Great Taste.” Master Sommelier Andrea Immer will host the festivities and has designed a series of themed tastings, seminars and demonstrations featuring her signature “wine by immersion” taste-based approach. “The festival is a great way for wine novices to learn a Chardonnay from a Cabernet,” Immer said “And those experienced with wine will enjoy the events as well as the variety of wines, including hard-to-find wines.” Additional highlights include cooking demonstrations, workshops and activities, dinners and entertainment. The Grand Tasting takes place on Friday, July 11, with an alfresco sampling of more than 100 wines from participating wineries. One to two world-class wines from each of the featured wineries will be sampled along with an exciting menu prepared by chefs from the Kapalua Bay Hotel & Ocean Villas. The hotel’s spectacular oceanfront promontory will serve as the setting for this opening. Andrea Immer lends her expertise to the selection and enjoyment of the tasting experience. Immer, dean at The French Culinary Institute in New York City, has authored two critically acclaimed books on wine. She recently released a third, “Great Tastes Made Simple,” adding great eating to her repertoire by showing how to enhance the flavor of even the most casual meals with winning wine choices. Special guests present a variety of fun,

interactive flavor experiences. Famed chef Ming Tsai of the popular Food Network television programs “East Meets West with Ming Tsai” and “Ming’s Quest” will be the featured chef this year, leading a cooking demonstration using his unique cuisine techniques. Steve Jenkins, the artisinal “cheese guru,” will be on hand to conduct a cheese tasting featuring some of the world’s most savory cheeses and pairing them with the best wines. One of Hawaii’s most famous chefs, Sansei’s renowned sushi artist D.K. Kodama will show festival-goers how to make sushi in a hands-on workshop. Also scheduled is a rum mixology seminar conducted by Master Dale DeGroff who will share “the craft of the cocktail”. Two exquisite, tropical-themed meals will be presented by the festival’s featured food experts. A Hawaiian Gala Dinner on Saturday, July 12 brings chefs of the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua together to prepare a non-traditional Hawaiian luau showcasing the international influences on Hawaiian cuisine. Kalua pork, lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, poi and other traditional luau fare will be interpreted in a new, internationally inspired way at this always sold-out special event. The highly anticipated Kapalua Seafood Festival on Sunday, July 13 spotlights Hawaii’s most famous chefs as they create inspired cuisine from the Pacific bounty, complemented by wine personally selected by Immer. Each chef will tempt the taste buds, preparing his or her own signature seafood dish. Guests will vote on their favorite dish as well as the best-decorated booth for Best of the Fest honors. This finale takes place at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s Aloha Garden Pavilion. Attendees will be delighted by the headline entertainment as 2003 Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Jake Shimabukuro and his band take the stage. Ukulele virtuoso Shimabukuro’s lightning fast fingers and innovative style are sure to wow the crowd as he blends traditional sounds with rock, blues, jazz, classical and swing.

Bruckheimer Spells Boredom Johnny Depp Goes It Alone Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (★) Were it not for Johnny Depp's crassly reassured character creation of scoundrel pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, there would be nothing to relish in this overlong and witless waste of celluloid and audience time based on a Disneyland ride. Captain Jack hijacks the fastest ship in the British fleet to rescue kidnapped damsel-in-distress Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly - "Bend It Like Beckham") from the clutches of Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), who has also purloined Sparrow's newly haunted ship, The Black Pearl. In addition, Barbossa has stolen a cursed treasure, transforming he and his crew into a band of pirate zombies who must now attempt to break the hex with the blood of Elizabeth's sappy suitor, a blacksmith named Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Gore Verbinksi ("The Ring") directs this slapdash pileup of unlikable characters and pointless fencing duels, set against a backdrop of labored horror. Jerry Bruckheimer is a name that consistently signals big budget, feature length movie trailers whenever it's intoned. He has become the brand name producer of attention deficit disorder movies. It doesn't matter how many times you get up to go to the bathroom during "The Rock," "Armageddon," or "Black Hawk Down" because you'll never miss anything important in stories that are spread out like spoonfuls of peanut butter over a two-mile stretch of hot asphalt. The fact that the producer of grand scale fiascoes like "Pearl Harbor" and "Kangaroo Jack" is stuck at the hip to Disney studios is apropos for a brand of cheesy entertainment that would be better served if it donated the money it wastes making movies to the American educational system. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" is a conundrum of impotent cinematic entertainment elements crushed together into a vat of barren atmosphere. On one hand, it's a children's pirate movie that savors spo-

Either way, "Pirates of the Caribbean" is too extreme for very young audiences, yet not developed enough for adults to enjoy. Unsurprisingly, it's Johnny Depp who does his best to single-handedly center the film's narrative quagmire by pulling focus and tweaking his relationship to the forth wall. Depp is never less than tongue-in-cheek in his slippery relationship to other characters or to the camera-as-audience. He ever so slightly mocks each line of dialogue and action set piece equally from behind a dubious choice of heavy eyeliner makeup that seems self-rendered. For the role of Sparrow, Depp adopts a perpetually drunken demeanor that gives his scenes an array of comedy lacking from the movie's severely disjointed tempo and tone. The film feels like it was directed by committee, with Johnny Depp left alone to lend whatever character cohesion there is, after prolonged spectacles of chase and fight scenes. Johnny Depp has long been at liberty to do as he pleases regarding the development of his characters. It's a rank that allows for solid work when a director like Polanski ("The Ninth Gate") challenges him, but leads to lazy efforts when he's coupled with lesser talents like Rand Ravich ("The Astronaut's Wife") or the vastly overrated Lasse Hallstrom ("Chocolat"). Johnny Depp is currently straddling a thin line between persona acting (see the demise of Nicolas Cage) and holding on to the character work that he built his career on. "The Pirates of the Caribbean" is a Johnny Depp picture by default, but it's not a movie that drives his career forward at all. In many ways, Depp has become the Jack Nicholson of his generation. His wild swings between intelligent art house pearls like "Night Falls" or "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas," and meaty mainstream dramas such as "Donnie Brasco" or

I call this one the Dog House...arrrggggh! "Blow" have cut a swath of artistic intention that demands a steady stream of risk taking. Tackling the same producer who offered the pernicious apple to Nicolas Cage with "Con Air" may be Depp's way of dancing close to a flame he can douse at any time. If that's the case, it's time for the 40-year-old actor to pull a Jack Nicholson and live up to his potential in a role that he can't quite master. Hunter S. Thompson will never be thought of in the same way he was before Johnny Depp got through with him. MTW

week’s Creepy, Sexy, Cool 28 Days Later @ Maui Mall Megaplex Check film showtimes, p. 19 It’s the most disturbing movie I know, “Clockwork Orange”, combined with one of the most frightening films in history, “Night of the Living Dead”. Using reality (television, science) as a tool to induce rage and fear, and the illusory (special effects) to propel the intensity, 28 Days Later is a film that challenges your morality while giving you a solid dose of eye-gouging gore. Not just some forum to see post-pubescent television hotties scream like they’re in a fetish flick, 28 Days Later is reminiscent of old horror films, when scary movies were actually terrifying. “It’s scary as hell,” my coworker Rudi says. I ask him why, and he says (with an incredulous “Duh!” look on his face), “Cuz there’s people walking around at night trying to eat you.” Um, yeah, I guess that’s enough for me, too.

THE RAKES & VOODOO SUNS

7 p.m. Friday, at Pipeline Café, Oahu So every alterna-geek under the age of 20 is in love with Amy Lee. Okay, the girl can sing and she's kinda cute. So they named their band "the act of fading away; fleetingness." Alright, yes, the band made the top ten in Billboard charts this week. So it's a previously Christian rock band that decided to suddenly keep their religious genre on the downlow in lieu of more marketable goal$ (hello, Creed). And yet, I can't seem to stop singing that catchy "Bring Me Back to Life" song. Regardless, we're stoked that another mainland band with alternative-mainstream popularity is visiting our islands, bringing us, the musically starved, a glimpse of hope for the future. Perhaps, one day, we too will see some imported rock bands on Maui again. (Do you remember when…?!)

Carlin or Bust

George Carlin's latest comedy album, “Complaints and Grievances”, has been out for sometime now, but I just saw the special for this a couple nights back and I figure that maybe not enough people listen to good ol’ George. George Carlin has a penchant for venomously tearing apart the very fabric of our society - from Religion to Politics to Language to everyday idiosyncrasies and nuances we all share - with the intelligence of a scholar and the potty-mouth of sailor. Although, this new CD has the events of September 11th looking over his shoulder as he sounds strangely subdued, not so much to censor himself but to keep the sympathies of an already nerve-wracked America in mind. What you must definitely get an earful of, however, is George's breaking down of the Ten Commandments (he gets it down to two). Pure genius and intensely hilarious. [GANNON GILMORE]

LIVE MUSIC AT THE MOOSE!

BY GANNON GILMORE

AM RADIO "RADIOACTIVE" With a name like AM Radio I would be surprised if these guys ever got huge. It's just not an impacting name and that’s a shame because these guys are quite excellent. Blending a nice mix of Weezer's (PostPinkerton) emo-pop and the nasally croon of The Smiths or The Smoking Popes, they provide a refreshing pop-musical landscape that never gets tired or uninspired. I would be remiss to sully this under the "Emo" or "College Rock" banner and yet they could stand defiantly near both with similar sounding bands like Death on Wednesday or The Smoking Popes' offshoot Duvall. Definitely recommended if you love any of the bands mentioned. -Elektra Records

ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES "TAKE A BREAK" The whole "Punk Covers of Radio Hits" novelty has gotten a little tired. If you don't agree, ponder how often a band can inject distorted guitars and punk beats into these songs. Eventually they will run out of songs worth doing. However, even with all that said Me First and The Gimme Gimmes still find a lot of fun with these songs. This time out they run through a bunch of R&B tunes from the likes of The Jackson Five, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly and several others. Comprised of members of NOFX, Lagwagon, The Foo Fighters and Swingin' Utters, Me First still save a little room for their little cover band to have a style of their own. It's a pity, though, that these records probably sell better than their respective bands’ records in some respects. -Fat Wreck Chords

VARIOUS ARTISTS "LOOKOUT RECORDS: PUNK SEVEN INCH CD VOL. 1" Well, firstly, for you older folks, a seven-inch is what you old timers called “45's”. This CD is a collection of the first six seven-inches that Lookout Records released in their early years (before Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine and Green Day blew the label and the East Bay up). It consists of the bands: Corrupted Morals, Isocracy, Plaid Retina, Yeastie Girls, Surrogate Brains and Kamala and The Karnivores. Everything is digitally re-mastered and includes all the sleeve art and liner notes. It's an excellent showcase of the East Bay punk rock scene at the time and a nice piece of history for the record collector trying to keep his/her vinyl in good shape. I know I haven't mentioned any of the music here but I'll let your curiosity for this release take care of that. -Lookout Records

VARIOUS ARTISTS "52 LESSONS ON LIFE"

SATURDAY JULY 12TH 9PM

NO COVER! NO COVER! NO COVER!

I don't quite grasp the point of this CD. Proceeds go to nameless charities which is only mentioned in the liner notes, this seems to be the first release from this label and the comp has fifty-four tracks of name and no-name bands (naturally, most of the songs have been released). For ten dollars this is a lot of music but honestly not much of it is any good. There is a lot of throwaway material. And the cover sucks! Two-tone background and nothing to draw attention to it whatsoever. This whole project reeks of misinformed-teenager-run record label compilation. If you see it somewhere and you've never heard of the bands listed then by all means, but if you've been listening to punk for at least five years you're already onto this. -Reinforcement Records

BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY "SAVE MY SOUL" For a switch of gears, check out this concept: Ex-punk turned jazz-swing revival band does New Orleans. You know, they just don’t make sevenpiece bands anymore and it’s a damn shame ‘cause BBVD really has a fresh, timeless feel, even as they pay homage to the blues, jazz, swing and big band sound. And now, on their latest release, they’re adding that infectious Bayou groove to the mix, creating a sort of love letter to the music of New Orleans. “When I was a kid, I was really into that crazy, anything-can-happen vibe of New Orleans,” bandleader Scotty Morris says. “And when I discovered punk at twelve or thirteen, it felt like exactly the same thing to me. I never really thought that early jazz and punk were that different.” [SAM CAMPOS] -Big Bad/Vanguard Records

DISMISS UNDERSTOOD After living with my boyfriend for five years he told me I had to go. It took me two weeks to move out; it only took him one week to start sleeping with a woman he met over the Internet. Though I'm lonely, I'm too heartbroken to think about meeting other guys. This guy turned out to be such a jerk -- why do I miss him so much? --Tossed and Turning I'm always a little afraid I'll be grabbed and held down by those department store cosmetics girls, then made over against my will: "Hey, I might write like a godless harlot, but I don't want to look like one!" Your forced transformation was more dermatological: from live-in girlfriend to giant mole in need of burning off. It's no wonder you're looking longingly at the past. Give yourself time to inventory what you actually miss -- your routine, your identity in the relationship, your expectations for him, and not feeling like somebody yanked the stopper out of your life, to name a few. Figuring out what you do miss should help you figure out what you don't: a guy who treats women like epidermal issues -- moving onto his next mole candidate before he's had the last one completely excised.

PLEATING INSANITY My husband and I are best friends with a fantastic sex life. We often role-play. One weekend, I was dressed in a Catholic schoolgirl skirt, and my husband was dressed as the teacher. My parents have a key, and we didn't hear them come in. Since this incident they've been trying to get us to seek psychological help. Is what we're doing in any way unhealthy? - Costume Crisis You'll never get in to see a therapist. They're far too busy saving the marriages of miserable people who never have sex to save those of wacky, happy people with "fantastic" sex lives. If you'd like to do something meaningful for your marriage, iron the pleats in your skirt. Your parents are the ones who really need help - for being so lacking in imagination that it didn't occur to them to knock. The fact that they're so shocked is a sign - it's probably high time somebody in their house started dressing up like a mean nun. Should you and "Teach" ever feel something's missing from your marriage, you might explore how a lot of the "healthy" couples do it: Just dress up in crisp Gap casuals and sit side-byside in a therapist's office, silently resenting each other. (Now, that's kinky.) Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, 171 Pier Ave, #280, Santa Monica, CA 90405, or e-mail A d v i c e A m y @ a o l . c o m (www.advicegoddess.com)

ARIES: This week it will be hard to stay at home. You're ready for another fun adventure. Try going to church in drag. Perhaps wearing a peace button at a Republican convention would suffice. Get crazy without having to go to jail or the loony bin. TAURUS: What you thought you said might not be what someone else heard. After you've given instructions, ask people to read them back to you. The full moon highlights travel, education and exotic cultures. Find joy in the unusual. GEMINI: Since you're such a great communicator, putting your money where your mouth is shouldn’t be a problem. You have the information to make the right decision. The full moon puts a spotlight on your libido, other people’s property and interdependence. CANCER: Break through the obstacles of the past. The new, the refreshing and the exciting are about to rock your world. Share your frustration with friends or a counselor. You need to open up. Perfection seldom exists in the real world. The full moon brings peace. LEO: Your psychic antennas are picking up all kinds of information. Your prayers are effective. When you talk to God/Goddess, expect an answer. Others share the things on your mind. The full moon emphasizes charitable causes and working with others. VIRGO: Through your helping others you become more independent. People are attracted to your freedom from desire. Being a temperate person will work in your favor. The full moon inspires love affairs, creative works and playing with children. LIBRA: Very few people can have authority without lording it over others. Librans like Ghandi, Jimmy Carter, and Dr. Bernie Siegel are the exception. Leadership need not decline into "Judge Judy" style humiliation. The full moon prompts memories and deep feelings. SCORPIO: Take it slow. Life’s riches are being thrown at your feet. You have good luck following you. Educational goals need to be addressed. The full moon brings close friends and a sense of belonging to a community or a local environment. SAGITTARIUS: Rolling with the changes is usually easy for you. This week you come face to face with some ego crushing issues. Paying your debts is to your advantage. The full moon deals with food, possessions and your sense of values. CAPRICORN: Everyone needs to compromise or come to an agreement. It's your turn to facilitate such causes. Win-win situations require that you listen to everyone. Popularity surges are likely this weekend with the full moon. You'll be busy. AQUARIUS: Bloom with a love for helping others. You're ready to do charitable work. You may have to pay attention to some personal health issues. Work constantly needs your attention. The full moon illuminates dreams and reveals your deeper connections. PISCES: Joy is a gift that gives one encouragement and strength. You're ready to paint your masterpiece, design a garden or choreograph a new dance step. The love bug has bitten and infected you with terminal romance. The full moon has you "kicking it" with friends.
