LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR CAN’T TAKE YES FOR AN ANSWER Aloha, I appreciate your magazine, the fresh attitude, your openness to community activism and the overdue cold-water bucket on the overdone New Age thing. I was way grateful for your support of Rob Parsons in the last election and the un-dealt-with issues his campaign stood for. (Like planning...) I work to affect community thinking or lack of. Last year I organized the satire beauty queens in the Makawao 4th of July parade, with titles such as “Miss Use of Power,” “Miss Appropriation of Funds” and “Miss Direction.” We even won the Mayor’s choice trophy. (I was on the cover of Haleakala Times twice. Oooooooooh…) Hey, because of the alternative dissenting voice we got rid of the $700,ooo incumbent (98 percent of that money from Oahu Remember?) and got Rob in to fight for Maui’s environment. Not bad... This is why I am especially bummed and irritated with your articles and attitude on Dennis Kucinich. He’s the real fucking thing, guys. A total real soul with destiny in politics. Please... read the Rolling Stone interview. -Amy Chang, via email The Editor responds: Are you bummed that we wrote a pick of the week asking people to go see Kucinich speak at Maui Community College (“The Crazy Leftist,” Oct. 16)? Did it irritate you that we treated Kucinich like a normal candidate and asked him about the issues he would have to face if he gets elected President of the United States (“Our Next ‘President,’”Oct. 23)?
PEOPLE REALLY DON’T LIKE PU’UNOA VILLAGE Kent Smith (“Growth is Inevitable,” Nov. 6) took three prime acres in Paia and under the
umbrella of “affordable” housing and constructed 24 houses, which have been aptly named in the community as “toytown” because they are nothing more than little boxes stacked on top of each other. The cost of these “affordable” houses started at $280,000 and some of them have already been resold and some others are up for rent to the tune of $2,000 a month... really “affordable” eh? I urge the County Council to vote “NO” on the Pu’unoa project despite what the developers might say, all you are going to get is another “toytown” and several people getting very rich under the umbrella of “affordable” housing. -Marshall Lewis, Paia At this time in our island’s history, many eyes are watching each and every land decision that is made by the County elected officials. The Pu’unoa development is clearly motivated by greed and shortsightedness. While there is a need for affordable housing on Maui, indiscriminate development is not a brilliant solution. In fact, it is against the will of the greater good. -Lloyd Fischel, via email

ehbrah@mauitime.com Why couldn’t you have been my neighbor instead of my landlord? What landlord doesn’t have their tenants sign a lease? What landlord makes their tenants paint the rooms in the home without giving them a rolling pan? What landlord tells one tenant that she knows someone who has been in jail before and is not afraid to hit a woman? What landlord curses you out on the front lawn and yells, “FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID COLLEGE EDUCATED PERSON! YOU THINK YOU ARE SO SMART, BUT GUESS WHAT, YOU ARE FUCKING STUPID!” You did all this to me and I did nothing. I caught 20 mice in April and you did nothing. I caught 15 in May and you did nothing again. For 10 months, I sweated because I couldn’t open the sliding glass door because you wouldn’t buy a screen door. FUCK YOU! You need to live a mouse-infested home, get cussed out for no reason and get treated like shit and then get back to me. I will own a home on Maui someday and I will never treat people the way you treated me and my roommates. I hope you lose your home. I give props to all of the wonderful landlords on Maui. But as for this psycho one, you need to treat people with respect instead of seeing them as dollar signs, you fucking bitch. -Future Maui homeowner

‘Support Hawaiian Rights’ Will native Hawaiians ever get organized? sent Hawaiian blood—emblazoned with the slogan “E Ku’e Kakao,” which roughly translates as “All of us standing together.” Some of the supporters carried large framed photos of Bernice Pauahi Bishop and Kamehameha I. Others waved large taro leaves or upsidedown Hawaiian state flags. One man in a baseball cap waved a sign with one hand, held a small dog by the leash with his other, all while trying to eat strands of red licorice. Standing a few yards down the road from Medeiros was his wife Poni, an educator at Kamehameha Schools. Poni said organizers expected about a thousand people to line the highway. A few minutes later, someone handed us a recent issue of The ‘Oiwi Files, a Honolulu-based newspaper covering native Hawaiian issues. The paper said a similar demonstration in Honolulu back in September drew 20,000. Poni said a big reason why she was out was an impending discrimination lawsuit against the schools, which only accept students with Hawaiian ancestry. (On Monday, a judge ruled the schools were not discriminatory.) “This is very serious for us,” she said.
The blaring horns made it difficult to carry on a conversation, but they didn’t stop Bill Medeiros, who kept right on waving his “Support Hawaiian Rights” sign. “We have to keep what we have and not lose anymore,” said the middle-aged Waiehu resident standing on Ka’ahumanu Ave. across the street from Maui Community College. “Hawaiians have entitlements guaranteed them by the U.S. Congress when the U.S. took over. There are groups trying to take them away.” But the specifics on those rights and groups weren’t easy to get out of Medeiros. He mentioned a wide range of grievances like a lack of compensation for “ceded lands” supposedly seized by the federal government. He said a variety of Hawaiian groups and local elders were out there on the highway from the Kaiser Clinic to the Maui Mall on Nov. 14, each with its own agenda. Like the couple dozen other supporters and the many hundreds of others representing all ages lining Ka’ahumanu Ave., Medeiros wore a red shirt—red to repre-
“When Bernice Pauahi Bishop died in 1864 she left her estate to form a trust to create Kamehameha Schools for Hawaiian children. During her lifetime, the population of Hawaiians went from 450,000 to 50,000. Pauahi was a very humble person who understood the way for Hawaiians to help themselves was through education. “The perception is that the school is discriminatory,” she said. “But most of our students
Hawaiian Rights” is so bland and open to such wide interpretation that it’s virtually impossible to argue for or against it. What rights specifically? The right to get money from Honolulu International Airport? The right to send your children to a Hawaiians-only school? All of the above? Something else? This is a problem facing Native Hawaiian groups today. There are so many Hawaiian
LINING A THOUSAND LOCALS ALONG THE HIGHWAY FROM 4 TO 6 P.M. ON A FRIDAY IS UNDENIABLY IMPRESSIVE— WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A THOUSAND HAOLES LINE UP FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN CONCERT TICKETS? are not pure Hawaiian. Every ethnicity on the planet is represented. I don’t think that’s discriminatory. I don’t think people realize what will happen if the doors [to Kamehameha Schools] are opened. Who will take care of the Hawaiians? We have a lot to lose.” Lining a thousand locals along the highway from 4 to 6 p.m. on a Friday is undeniably impressive—when was the last time you saw a thousand haoles line up for something other than concert tickets? Whether it amounts to anything good for locals is another matter. The whole disparity of the demonstration— group after group, all waving ambiguous signs—means specific political results will be hard to come by. The very phrase “Support
groups—multiple hula halaus, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Alu Like, even a Hawaiian government with duly elected prime minister—that nothing ever gets done. In a few years the Hawaiian people are supposed to get the island of Kaho’olawe. Exactly who will get it and for what purpose remains unknown. In fact, the presence of so many groups and so many agendas will continue to diffuse native Hawaiians’ power. Of course, this is what Haole has always wanted—huge numbers of locals standing impotently on the highway, urging people on to a vague future. Native Hawaiians have the numbers to back up serious political action. Now all they need is to get organized. MTW

MONDAY, NOV. 10 They haven’t built it, but they are coming. Hundreds of people, in fact. They camped out in Wailuku this weekend to reserve one of 140 new three and four bedroom homes with prices starting in the mid-$300,000s. Is this how it’s gonna be when Pu’unoa gets built?
TUESDAY, NOV. 11 The U.S. Navy officially, finally, formally hands over Kaho’olawe and whatever “treasures” it still holds from 50 years of naval gunnery training to the State of Hawaii. That handover occurs today for largely symbolic reasons, it being Veterans Day and all. This is the day when we’re all supposed to thank our vets. “This nation will never forget their lives of service and all they did for us,” said President George W. Bush, who despite going AWOL from a paper Air National Guard command to work on a Senate campaign while the Vietnam War raged still qualifies as a veteran. Of course, Bush and his GOP cronies have thanked vets in other ways, too, like robbing them of the funding for disabilities caused by war wounds, health care, pensions for poor vets, education monies, housing funds and burial benefits. Bush has so far refused to side with World War 2 and Korean War vets who in 1995 got screwed out of their promised free health care for life. Where’d the money go? Tax cuts we can’t afford, monster Defense Department weapons programs and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and who
knows where else—wars that will create ever more veterans who will never see the pensions and benefits solemnly promised them when they don their uniforms. Happy Veterans Day!
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 12 Kaua’ula Associates continues its public relations offensive to get its “Pu’unoa Village” built. “Your opinions count!” blares a big ad in today’s Maui News that includes clippings from that paper and Maui Weekly warning of the need for affordable housing. The ad also pleads with readers to attend a Nov. 17 county council committee meeting on the subject, since “this may be the only opportunity we have for affordable housing in West Maui for the foreseeable future.” A bunch of tiny homes, only a couple dozen of which the county planning department says will be within working people’s grasp, constitutes “affordable housing?” The only thing funnier in the News was a letter to the editor from developer Jim Whitehead about a recent county council committee meeting on Pu’unoa that drew a reported 500 members of the public. “A lot of people left because they felt intimidated by the opponents,” wrote Whitehead. “Probably 90 percent of the people attending were for the project.” Intimidated? Whitehead knows better—he attended a recent coaching session the Pu’unoa developers held a couple weeks ago in Olowalu to instruct people on how to testify before the county council, what to say, how to write letters of support, that kind of thing (“Growth is Inevitable,” Nov. 6)… It’s not often you see a trusted, honorable organization turn its back on 57 years of her-

itage and tradition. But here it is in black and white: “The Hawaii Hotel Association (HHA) has recently changed its name to the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association (HHLA),” wrote HHA—check, HHLA—spokeswoman Karen Tsui. But that wasn’t the worst of it. Tsui then added that the change also brought about “a new logo.”
Islands? Think again. At today’s State Senate Water, Land and Agriculture committee hearing in the County Council chambers in Wailuku, a state official admitted that the state Commission on Water Resource Management—which oversees aquifer and stream use across the entire Hawaiian archipelago—has but 20 personnel to do its job. That’s less than two-dozen trained geologists, hydrologists and engineers to keep an eye on every water source throughout the state of Hawaii. Then again, if there were a lot of water guys running around, they’d probably be pretty aggressive in their recommendations that we not build so much so we don’t drain our water supplies so fast… What is it with the Hawaii tourist industry these days? First the HHA messes with our minds and becomes the HHLA, and now I find out from a Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau press release that Hawaii Magazine, which has a circulation of 85,000 and is supposedly all about Hawaii, isn’t published in Hawaii but in Irvine, California. IRVINE?!?! What is this, Bizarro World? Irvine is the land of stucco roofs, gated communities, quasi-imperial homeowners associations and sterile corporate offices. If we played a word-association game and you said “Irvine,” the first word that would pop into my head would be “Sterile.” For God’s sakes, Irvine is in Orange County! Of all the cities in all the world to publish Hawaii Magazine, why does it have to be Irvine?
FRIDAY, NOV. 14 The old lady who talks about oral sex on cable—does that work for you?
SATURDAY, NOV. 15 THURSDAY, NOV. 13 Think the Bush Administration’s draconian attitude that all government save law enforcement and the military is evil and needs to be starved of funding doesn’t stretch all the way out to our quaintly liberal Hawaiian

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD OUT OF THIS WORLD LAND DEAL For 23 years, Dennis Hope, 55, of Gardnerville, Nev., has operated a business selling people “official” title to land on the moon, Mars and Venus for about $20 an acre. Although others are in the same business, Hope told the Las Vegas ReviewJournal in September that he has earned $6.5 million during that period (an average of $270,000 a year). He says his idea was based on something he actually learned in school: that the international Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prohibited nations from owning celestial bodies but was silent about individual ownership. Hope says he wrote to the United Nations, explained his plan and asked if they had a problem with it. He said no one wrote back.
WEIRD SCIENCE Carl Hanson of St. Paul, Minn., actually obtained a U.S. patent (No. 6,457,474) in 2002 for what he described as a new method for treating heart-related chest pain (as reported in August 2003 by Scientific American). Hanson’s unique invention: He drinks limeade from concentrate. His patent application said that it worked for him, and he wrote out the required details about the structure of the invention, specifically, to purchase cans of concentrate, add water, stir and introduce the juice into the body through the mouth (although Hanson wrote that his patent would also cover intravenous administration).
SCIENCE MARCHES ON Among the 15 “worst” actual jobs in science (from the October issue of Popular Science): (15) counting fish (one by one, for hours) that swim by dams in the Pacific Northwest; (11) the only two government bureaucrats whose job is to con-

vince Americans of the merits of the metric system; (7) researchers who reach into a cow’s rumen to pull out and analyze the stomach contents; (4) mosquito catchers who endure up to 15 bites a minute on three-hour shifts and hope not to get malaria; (3) researchers who extract sperm from animals for study or artificial insemination (and extracting from a pig is much preferable to extracting from a bull); and (1) “flatus odor judges” working for gastroenterologist Michael Levitt, who feeds subjects pinto beans, then gathers gases in plastic collection tubes direct from the source, and then has judges sniff as many as 100 samples, rating them for strength.
GOOD GRIEF Cyril Kendall was easily convicted in August in New York City for swindling the American Red Cross and another organization out of $160,000 for family grief counseling over a “son” who “died” in the World Trade Center attack. There are no official records that the son ever existed, although Kendall presented some documents that government experts termed poor forgeries. The grief counseling ($425 an hour) was spent entirely at a “company” that did not exist but of which Kendall admitted that he was the sole employee (thus paying himself to counsel himself and his family).
ILLEGITIMATE THEATRE In September, a committee of Milwaukee’s city council approved the application of a strip joint (Club Paradise Gentlemen’s Club) to also become a “center for visual and performing arts” (the same designation as the Milwaukee Art Museum) by the simple act of placing several pieces of upscale artwork on its walls. Such a classification would allow liberalization of the club’s alcohol permit. (However, by the time the matter came to the full council, the public had heard about it, and the club withdrew the application.)

Cracked Pipes and Crumbling Porches Before Pu’unoa, there was Kahana Nui Jodi Sumimoto was beside herself with frustration and anger. Sumimoto is a single mother of two teenage sons who also works two jobs, but her fury was directed at her house. “The plumbing is so bad,” she said. “And the porch is falling apart. The paint is peeling and the boards are rotted. Should that be happening in a six-year-old house? We’re really happy we have a home, but we’ve been suffering.” Sumimoto has lived in Kahana Nui Village, a small group of not quite a dozen homes just north of Lahaina, for the last six years. She was one of the original homeowners who moved in. While her home has three bedrooms and two baths, most of the other Kahana Nui houses are much smaller. Kahana Nui was one of Smith Development’s first “zero lot line” projects built of small homes supposedly “affordable” to working people. With Smith Development awaiting final approval for its Pu’unoa Village in West Maui, possible construction problems in Sumimoto’s neighborhood—as well as
community park promises two homeowners say weren’t kept—have taken on a new significance. After all, the state recently fasttracked the Pu’unoa project, one result of which is to exempt the homes from all the state’s usual construction standards. Sumimoto said her biggest problem in the last month has been dealing with her home’s plumbing—a problem she says plagues her neighbors as well. “It’s been frustrating, having to wait for plumbers,” she said. “Water came up onto our driveway. We just noticed it a month ago, but it’s been leaking a long time. They said the wrong kind of pipe was installed. It was supposed to be copper, but instead they installed black plastic, like rubber. “They just surrounded the pipe with rocks rather than sand,” she said. “So when the ground shifted it cracked the pipe. Most of the homes have already had their pipes replaced. There are patches in the driveways where the workers had to cut the concrete. We wanted to just patch it, but they said we had to replace the whole pipe. Now they’re putting in copper.” She said digging up her driveway and replacing the pipes cost her $3,000.
Joe Mateo, one of Sumimoto’s neighbors, also had plumbing problems at his home. He said state inspectors stopped by the development a couple weeks ago. They looked at work ripping out the old pipes, then talked with one of the homeowners. “They asked her ‘Aren’t you happy with your equity?’” Mateo said. “Her equity! She has to go turn the water on and off at the street.” What’s more, Mateo said the Kahana Nui Village community park has been a source of resentment as well.
“Let me tell you about another thing they did,” said Mateo. “A few years ago we had a meeting at our community park. [Smith] told us that if we dedicated the park to the county, they would pay for the water and the liability and all we’d have to do is mow the grass.” Mateo said the homeowners happily agreed, but quickly found that they still had to pay for all the park’s maintenance and liability costs. “They stole our park, as far as we’re concerned,” he said. “It’s our park—but the county owns it. Anyone can go and use it, but we
“THEY ASKED HER ‘AREN’T YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR EQUITY?’” MATEO SAID. “HER EQUITY! SHE HAS TO GO TURN THE WATER ON AND OFF AT THE STREET.” Smith Development has promised “more than eight acres of parks” for Pu’unoa. “Pu’unoa Village’s four parks far exceed Maui County’s park requirements,” said one Pu’unoa brochure. “The community’s largest central park is the size of two football fields with plenty of space for playgrounds, outdoor concerts, baby luaus and plain old room to run and play.” While Smith Development has promised that homeowner’s fees for Pu’unoa will be less than $100, Mateo isn’t buying it.
have to pay for the liability.” As for Smith, he refused to comment for this story. “You’re my best buddy!” he said after I called but before I could actually ask a question. “Look pal—and you can quote me on this—you’re just going to write sensationalism, tabloidism, and I choose not to participate in this third round of slimy journalism. You can write whatever you want and don’t waste my time calling me again.” Then he hung up. MTW

This year’s Mana O Ke Moana Ocean Challenge Last weekend’s Mana O Ke Moana Ocean Challenge is a very different race from the rest of what appears on the Maui race calendar. It is the only race around that brings together triathletes, master and ocean swimmers, surfers, lifeguards and canoe paddlers. The race began three years ago as the brainchild of race director Bram Denhaan. Since then it’s not only grown in participation and popularity, but in
Running on the sand...
intensity as well. For several participants this race is the most important of the year. Some of the teams—with each team member racing two of the four legs—are put together with friends. Others are specialists in their sport, paired up solely for a win. The competition is fierce for the fastest solo racers as well as the teams—in some cases merely a matter of seconds separating them at the finish. Despite all the competitive energy, everyone smiles and chats on the beach as they set up their gear. Beautiful weather and beautiful ocean conditions make this a fantastic race day. The race begins with a mass start ocean swim. The one-mile course started at Charlie Young Beach, then south parallel to the beach along Kamaole Beach Park I, crossing the lava finger to the turn around at Kamaole II. The initial leg takes the swimmers right into the sun as it rises above the flanks of Haleakala. From the turn around it is back, past the sailboats bobbing on their anchors to the transition at Charlie Young. As expected, Maui County Ocean Safety lifeguards and the masters swimmers are the first out of the water, their goal of getting an early lead well in hand. From there, solo racers whip off their goggles, while teams make their first exchange, and grab surfboards. They take off paddling north, past Cove Park and out to a buoy described in the pre-race briefing as being “way out there.” The surfers take the opportunity to make their move.

And in the water After the buoy they had a nice southward run, with the open ocean ground swells pushing racers along to another turn buoy that would take them back north to Charlie Young beach. By this point they’ve covered two miles on their boards. Once back on the beach, the teams do their second hand-off. For the solo racers, the heat of the race is on, but they are only half done. They still have to do “the boat leg,” which is either a one-man canoe (OC-1) or a kayak. This leg covers three miles, from Charlie Young Beach south, past the Kihei boat ramp to Keawakapu, then they turn around and head north again. Racers speed past turtles basking on the surface, and send ballyhoo jumping out of the water as their sleek craft skim across the surface. The sun is up high by now, and it is starting to get hot and racers are pushing hard on this final water leg. Any distance that the outrigger paddlers had lost on the previous legs
are made up now with furious paddle strokes. After returning to the beach, paddlers leave their boats at the water’s edge and head out for a two-lap run on the beach. For those lucky to be racing on a team, there is still some energy for the run. For the solo athletes it’s a final push to take them to the finish line. Running a mile in sand is tough. But running a mile in sand after you have been swimming and paddling for over an hour and half is murderous. Some runners are still fluid, graceful and full of power. Others are cramping and shuffling along, having a drink, just holding on for the finish. But coming across the line brings a surge of exhilaration, relief and a great feeling of accomplishment. I first noticed the Artery in March. Actually, I noticed the disco lights reflecting off of the wall of the Paia Chevron. There was a lot of kinetic energy there, and it attracted me to the back lot. There I glimpsed a beautiful chaos—fiberglass statues, hanging dolphins and people looking busy but obviously having fun. From then on I wondered what was really happening in that old building behind the gas station. As I met more people in town and connected with the community, I got closer to the Artery. Later, I met its characters. The old repair shop has been transforming since Jerry Morgan and Tim Pierpoint first leased it out as their workshop four years ago. In the last four months the place has changed exponentially. What was once a garage, dusty storage space and Pierpoint and Morgan’s personal dreamworks is now an eclectic, sophisticated, laid-back art gallery, as well as a workshop and center for exciting shows and stimulating discussion. The catalyst for the rapid change is Piero Resta. A living legend on Maui, he’s been a force of creative development here for the past 25 years. In its own way, Maui has certainly helped develop his creative genius. His home base is his remote family estate in Kaupo, Villa Tamarinda, with the Artery as his “Headquarters in Civilization” where friends, family and colleagues go to check in with Resta. Of course, curious people are free to visit for inspiration. Pierpoint, Morgan, and Resta call themselves “The Three Lions of Paia,” since they are all Leos who have formed a solid and progressive triumvirate in the local art scene. Now with the Artery nearly complete they can realize their dream of educating the public and promoting the arts and the artist’s life on Maui. The Artery does not look like your typical, impersonal commercial gallery. Since the three lions routinely carry out architectural art installations, all the remodeling they’ve done is in itself a work of art. Upon arriving, the visitor is first drawn in by Resta’s Italian style patio. There’s a working fountain mosaic, Roman arch, greenery and homey table. Nearby is the kitchen where he entertains his family. Passing through the patio creates a feeling of entering some tropical, Hawaiian Tuscany. A fresco in progress, colorful mosaic and another calming fountain on the left-hand wall lend more of Resta’s Italian vibe. Gorgeous ceramic pieces by his wife, Gail, decorate the walls and columns. Antique chests lend the space their own character. The Hawaiian influence on Resta’s painting is evident in the large, vibrant works adorned with abstract figures wearing leis in a Polynesian paradise. His paintings flow like the ocean and illustrate the ‘aina and sea connection. It is easy to get mesmerized while staring at them as the complexities of life reveal themselves in the deep layers.
the artist’s life and creative process, get inspired, and buy beautiful works. They like to say that they are initiating the “beautification of Paia.” But it adds much more—accessible art life and innovation—to a community that already has a great sports life and an organic, international, free-spirited vibe. “The Artery is a think tank,” said Pierpoint. “There is a lot of talent on Maui and we want a place where other artists can come to work and be inspired, network and establish something that feeds off of itself.” Pierpoint says the whole thing came to him “like a dream.” “We wanted to take the Artery to a new level and right after I thought about inviting Piero in, I saw him at the store and it was a confirmation,” he said. “Piero is a good energy. He’s like a whirlwind and is a great attraction. My gift to him was this raw space and it has all come together. Some supplies were donated to us and we got started right away making things happen. The Artery is a hui of talent that draws people together and it is becoming a focal point and an oasis in downtown Paia for artistic, creative people.” There are no barriers at the Artery. The gallery is divided into two distinct sections, but Resta believes it is one united effort to bring art to the people. Like an artery, the art connects the three creators and their energies flow into one another like oxygen-rich blood. “We’re here to wake people up,” said Resta. “The Artery is transparent. There are no doors and windows because we have nothing to hide. We don’t want to hide our presence from the world. This is a place for people to come through. It is great to see strangers pop in; it’s nourishing. We are very fortunate to be here.” The Artery’s founders seem to show a sincere philosophical interest in creating art for art’s sake. There is no aggressive selling or pressure to do anything else than just what they do. “We’re driven to create and we’re going to do it anyway. If somebody wants to buy stuff— great,” said Morgan. “When someone buys art, they want to know the person first. Here, we have a gallery space where you can see us working too. You can see the debauchery and the success. Come see the artist in his natural habitat—please feed the starving artist.” Pierpoint and Morgan met four years ago, but they both knew Resta from many years before. Pierpoint is known for his innovative use of recycled materials to create eccentric, grand scale pieces. He routinely participats in The Art of Recycled Trash show held annually at Ka’ahumanu Center. He’s known Resta since 1984, when he worked with him at the latter’s bohemian hangout. They also worked together at the Pauwela Cannery in its infancy. As for Morgan, he and Resta spent time on several elaborate architectural installations. Morgan is well known for his dolphin pieces, like those at the Maui Ocean Center and, of course, the disco ball dolphin that welcomes onlookers to the Artery.
THE ARTERY TAPPING A CREATIVE VEIN IN THE HEART OF PAIA
By Joe Gatto
Morgan and Pierpoint have been busy the last few years creating public art that exists for a short time only. The Trojan Horse float that paraded down Front St. on Halloween night three years ago put them on the map. Later they transformed the Trojan Horse into Rudolph for a march through Paia at Christmas time. By the next Halloween, they constructed a flying saucer that levitated 15 feet off the ground and carried many of their friends. Once, they placed large fiberglass mushrooms in a cow field near Ho’okipa, but the ranchers weren’t happy about it and threw them into the ocean. Mysteriously, one later washed up on shore. Almost exactly one year later to the day, someone anonymously deposited it at the studio. Most recently, in Olinda, they put up Big Cat Crossing signs in Olinda. The signs show The Cat in the Hat to warn of the elusive beast. With such diverse talents and original thinking there is no end to what they can do at the Artery. It is a place for education and illumination where people of all stripes can learn about

Anyone who enters the Artery should expect the unexpected. The guys are usually at work, listening to music, creating or just hanging out being cool. Their openness and spontaneity lead to fun conversation. There are eccentric pieces like the brain man with the cards and Pierpoint’s giant shell lamps. His and Morgan’s side has aspects of an old-time carnival space. It’s easy to imagine the place storing Mardi Gras floats. But the majority of their space resembles an aquarium. The high ceilings are painted sea colors and fiberglass dolphins cover the walls. The couch area and long bar recreate a wave. Elaborate bar stools specially carved by local artisans will soon belly up to it. “You gotta be brave and adventurous to come back here,” said Morgan. “Usually three kinds of people come back here—the curious individual, bathroom waiters from Chevron
and tourist families.” Resta sees his gallery as fulfilling a vital community need. “It is more urgent than ever to have a space for people to talk and gather,” he said. “It is important to have this sanctuary and laboratory as an artist, but also that it is open to the public. Young people who want to learn need places like this, it is part of the liberal arts life. The Artery is a private place that is a public space. Public art enriches everyone’s life and makes them more intelligent.” The day I spent with Resta was enlightening. Several people came to visit him, including a tourist family, one of Morgan’s three visitor types. Don Jasco, a local painter who recently invented a color wheel CD-Rom artists can use to mix paints, stopped by to show his perfect rendition of the Carthaginian. Later, a young Russian artist came by with an antique dealer from the East Coast to talk business. Elizabeth, a gifted landscape architect, came over to hang out and talk color with Jasco. Resta showed me some amazing sculptures in progress in front of a new house on Baldwin Ave. that live up to his mission of sharing as much art as possible with the public through private avenues. The Artery is a family, too. Pierpoint, Morgan and Resta are the nucleus. More artists will be added as well. Starting next month, Piero will host gallery events for his daughter Bella, then sons Stefano and Luigi, as well as two painters coming from Italy. Resta wants to promote young artists and help people advance themselves. He says he is interested in artists who continually travel to seek out new influences and bring them back to the island—people who have enough courage to go beyond that which they see with the eyes. Pierpoint, Morgan, Resta and his family constantly play off of each other, motivate and inspire one another. They are growing that creative spark into a fire that affects anyone who stops by. As much as he can, Resta includes people in his creativity and inspires grand transformations. Spending time with him is a mind expansion experience that is reflected in his paintings, which are joyful and unrestrained. He often uses nude models as an erotic catalyst, but the paintings do not come out looking at all like the woman. Instead, Resta encourages their beauty. He stimulates them to freely transform—to become gorgeous and feminine. That is what he captures on canvas. The Artery is like this, too. It is a beautiful work of art in progress, flourishing on the canvas that is the old garage. Pierpoint, Morgan and Resta are creating a solid foundation that will continue to evolve and foment art and the artist’s life on Maui, sharing the experience so that everyone benefits. They live life to the fullest and make art because it is beautiful and fun to do. Now they have a place where many people can come to get a taste of that freedom, inspiration, motivation and creativity, and hopefully apply it to their daily life. They encourage the public to stop by for a visit, chat for a while and experience art in action. “My duty is to be an inspiration,” said Resta. “We’ll make history here. I assure you of that.” MTW

I gotta admit I get lost in ethnic and regional restaurants. Fancy ingredients, foreign menu items—it’s all so confusing. Not wanting to play the fool one more time, I brought along a trusty and knowledgeable Italian descendant, Johnny Oliveri, to help decipher my meal and experience at the Aroma D’Italia Ristorante. “Johnny O,” as he prefers to be called, proudly embodies what he says are the distinguishing features of a southern Italian: black hair, dark eyes and a largerthan-average nose. He’s half Sicilian, in fact, and if Goodfellas was filmed today they’d want him for sure. This is good, because Aroma D’Italia was founded by a woman of Sicilian decent, Marie Palazzolo-Akina. Once in the restaurant it’s easy to forget you’re in a shopping center on a tropical island. The dark lighting, the red and green décor and walls lined with pottery and pictures suggest a quaint bistro tucked away in a Naples side street. Ambient music soothes your soul as you remember and reconnect with your Italian ancestors. Well, maybe for Johnny O. If you prefer, there’s lanai seating outside. The restaurant features a full list of red and white wines, but we passed on the Pinot Grigios and Chiantis in favor of the beer Birra Moretti. It’s an exceptionally refreshing and full-bodied beer and really tastes great after a long day of work. Should you so desire the bar menu also offers Grappa, Limoncella and a Hazelnut Bellangelo. I began with the special Antipasto salad: sweet peppery Italian ham, tomato sections, marinated artichoke quarters, provolone cheese and olives. You’ll want this only if you’re hungry. Johnny O ordered the deep fried calamari rings and a house salad. As he was set on proving once again, the guy can eat. Marie pointed out that her restaurant specifically features the cuisine of southern Italy. “Although we do have an alfredo, generally we do not use creams,” she said. “Most all of our dishes involve olive oil, garlic, wine, basil and tomatoes, just like in Sicily.” Aside from the specials, the menu has more than 20 items to choose from. I was excited to try the grilled eggplant ($13). Served in a marinara sauce and garnished with Romano cheese, the eggplant comes with orzo pastini seasoned with garlic, olive oil and fresh diced tomatoes. It puts your typical grilled eggplant to shame. Johnny O ordered the Shrimp Fettuccini Alfredo ($18), and to accompany it he got the Veal Piccata ($19). As he says, he “just loves southern Italian
Now that’s Italian! food.” I think he was having a flashback to life as a Jersey bambino. The alfredo was your standard creamy noodle and shrimp dish. Served over a bed of linguine, this would have been enough for a normal person. The veal, on the other hand, was out of this world. It was warm and tender, served with fresh vegetables and pasta, and covered in a white wine/olive oil sauce topped with capers. Lucky for me he was feeling generous—or possibly full. Regardless, I was happy to help. Guys don’t share dessert, and neither of us was willing to admit we didn’t have room for more, so to our belly’s chagrin we each opted for something different. Johnny O had the cannoli, because “nothing beats a good cannoli.” It probably was good, but after two appetizers and two meals, it was a little much. I barely made room for the tiramisu, which was surprisingly light, but again maybe best left for another time. We both passed on an after dinner drink or coffee, but I did notice that Aroma d’Italia features the famous La Vazza espresso that other Maui establishments prefer to keep secret. Aroma D’Italia Ristorante is a reasonable way to enjoy the flavors of southern Italy. And as it turns out, it’s not so confusing. Located next to Foodland at 1881 S. Kihei Road, 879-0133. Appetizers from $4-$10, dinners $9-$19. Open 5 p.m.-9 p.m. every night except Sunday. MTW

tions of the word “Maui.” The last wall has nine more photos, this time of the various zip codes. Because the Lahaina sign is falling apart, the West Maui zip code appears as just “9676” with only a shadow of where the last digit should go. Matao said all the photos came from post offices. He said the first shot he took was of the sign at the Kihei Post Office. Liking how it looked, he then took similar images from the rest of the post offices on Maui. “I kind of wanted to watch how people would connect to the photos,” said the 32-year-old Kihei resident. “As people would look at the photos, they would begin to see which photos were taken at the same location. They would begin to see the similarities between each of the walls.” Matao, who currently works as a server in one of the big Wailea resorts, says he grew up in Cleveland, lived in big cities like Houston and Baltimore for a time, then moved to Maui on Sept. 11, 2001. “That was kind of a rough day to arrive on Maui,” he said. “I came out here trying to find a new avenue. Hawaii is such a colorful place. It’s hard to come here and do black and white. But I really like architecture.” In a way, Matao has turned the whole concept

The photos are hung in a small, normally unlit room off the main gallery in the Pacific Center for Photography in Wailuku. There isn’t much in the room itself, except a couch with a bunch of throw pillows and the photographs—33 in all. They hang on the room’s four walls, which are painted the color of green tea ice cream. The photographer Matao, who prefers to go by “Matao,” took the photos. They are all black and white and are starkly minimalist. So minimalist, in fact, that they almost lack images. Each photo is a snapshot of a word naming a various place on Maui exactly as it appears in real life. For example, one of the photos is a shot of the word “HAWAII” as it appears on a sign bolted to a lava rock wall at a local post office. Each gallery wall contains a different grouping of photos. When you walk in, the wall on your right displays nine pictures of the word “Hawaii,” though there are two photos of the “HI” abbreviation. The second wall shows 10 pictures of various city signs— “HANA,” KAHULUI,” “Pukalani” and so forth. The third wall has five representa-

The Art of Words
of photography—especially the old cliché that a picture is worth a thousand words— upside down. In Matao’s world, looking at just one word is worth a thousand pictures. In a way, he’s reduced photography to book form. His treatment of all cities on Maui is identical, but let’s take Paia for an example. He could have taken his Olympic E 10 digital camera to Baldwin Beach and shot someone lounging on the sand or playing in the water. Or he could have shot an image of people waiting in line at Paia Fish Market for a cajun-style Mahi sandwich. Or he could have shot the sugar cane fields just out of town. Oh Yeah!
Mike Myers plays with his whiskers Screenwriters Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and Dave Mandel have expanded the 220 words of Dr. Seuss’s endlessly readable 1957 children’s book into a filmic pastiche of quirky jolts and visual gibes that Mike Myers prances over as the irrepressible Cat in the Hat. With only a trace of Austin Powers, and a hint of the lion from The Wizard of Oz, Myers throws his fast twitch physical virtuosity into high gear between spasms of Groucho inflected asides. Sally (Dakota Fanning, I Am Sam) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin, The Kid)
are two kids sworn to keep their mother’s house neat on a rainy day while their babysitter naps on the couch. The family’s pet goldfish (voice of Sean Hayes) suffers continuous humiliation while the Cat in the striped stovepipe Hat leads the kids on a series of stunts designed to teach them the importance of responsibility within the limits of wild abandon and liberation. The story opens in a deluxe realty office with high ceiling fans where single mother Joan Walden (Kelly Preston, Citizen Ruth) works under the furious pressure of her obses-
sive-compulsive boss Mr. Humberfloob (Sean Hayes, Will & Grace) whose favorite motto is “you’re fired!” Joan is scheduled to host an important realty party at her ideal house, in her fanciful neighborhood, where everyone drives the same car and mows their lawn everyday—twice if necessary. Herein lies the subtext of the ‘50s American Dream that Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) was ridiculing in his not-a-little anarchic book. While little control freak Sally busies herself with her daily checklist on a PDA, her rambunctious brother Conrad is busy in the kitchen preparing for a ride down their long twisting staircase with loaves of bread and bags of popcorn to serve as padding. Conrad’s joyride comes to an inauspicious end as his mother opens the front door just in time to send him flying out onto the sidewalk. Enter smarmy next-door-neighbor Alex
Olinda cat? No, it’s Mike Myers as... Kulchak (Alec Baldwin), dressed all in purple, to wheedle his way into Joan’s house in a droll attempt at convincing her to send Conrad off to military school so he can marry her. From here the battle lines are drawn. Joan sends for her lazy-little-old-lady babysitter Mrs. Kwan (Amy Hill, Next Friday) and gives strict instructions to the kids not to go into the living room where she will host her party that evening, “or else.” The Cat In The Hat’s debut director Bo Welch started out as a production designer on movies like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Men In Black. Welch’s immense experience with overtly vibrant visual compositions is on display in every frame of The Cat In The Hat, but he never allows the brimming visuals to overpower the characters or the subtlety of Myers’ innate humor.
The Cat in the Hat ★★★★★ The power of the story is that the Cat is conducting impossible shenanigans for the kids to experience, but with an unseen control that we trust as somehow still being adult/responsible in nature. Even the mildly bawdy humor that slips past on a few occasions is presented with a very definite amount of authority. But it’s the dynamic quick tempo pacing that Welch uses to snap laughs from the audience by way of Myers’ brilliant backspin delivery. The Cat In The Hat is a much lighter story than How The Grinch Stole Christmas and comes across much easier than producer Brian Grazer’s other Dr. Seuss effort, which starred Jim Carrey in the title role. Here is a genuinely funny kids’ movie with the best comedian for the role, having as much infectious fun as Jack Black in School of Rock. The genius of Mike Myers lies in the little nuances behind the generous intent of his delivery. Seeing him chop off part of his tail while baking cupcakes is a supreme moment of high humor. Even if the adults don’t all think so, I’m sure their kids will. Rated PG 82 mins. MTW

Carnie Intrigue Sunday, 7 p.m. on HBO Aside from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, I am also now totally addicted to a fabulous new cable-TV series called Carnivàle. Just when I thought I was safe from having to race home on Sundays to see Sex in the City, HBO busts out with this fascinating, cinematically gorgeous, traveling carnival drama set in the depression era of the ‘30s. The story revolves around the carnival workers and the townsfolk they encounter on their travels, but really focuses on the supernatural powers of a young rouster named Ben and an enigmatic minister, Brother Justin. Even the opening credits cleverly conjure up images, in tarot cards, of the show’s underlying concepts of good versus evil, God against man, man in his struggle with himself—all the classic literary themes. Somethin’ about it makes me wanna get cork high and bottle deep in absinthe, if ya know what I mean. Thankfully and regrettably, there’s only two episodes left, but it’s definitely worth checking out the—what’s sure to be—freak show carnival carnage-filled series finale!

The Holiday Season is here!
School of Assassins Friday, 6:30 p.m., at Ka Lama Bldg in Maui Community College It’s really appalling that the U.S. Army still runs its School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia. This is where hundreds of Latin American butchers like Manuel Noriega and Jose Guillermo Garcia received commando and interrogation training courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer. The Army says they teach human rights sensitivity these days, but critics insist it’s still the same old “School of Assassins” we’ve all grown to hate. While thousands will mass at Benning to protest the school, Maui Peace Action and the college Peace Club will show the film Father Roy Inside the School of Assassins to bring you up to speed on the attempts to get the nation’s biggest affront to democracy shut down. On an island famous for kiteboarding and paddling, college basketball pretty much qualifies as an extreme sport. But once a year, this week in fact, Chaminade University hosts seven other NCAA teams for the three-day Maui Invitational. This year’s bracket includes Villanova, Central Michigan and Ohio State, among others. Since every NCAA champion since 1983 has shot hoops on Maui, this is pretty much your best chance at seeing a future NBA star without leaving the island. In fact, past Invitational MVP awards have gone to Glenn Rice (Michigan, 1988), Raef LaFrentz (Kansas, 1996) and Mike Dunleavy (Duke, 2001). For tickets call 667-DUNK. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

VIRGO: The time of your ancestors leaves a lot to the imagination. Things dealing with mother, home and family come on strong with the new moon. Your strength is in memory, sensitivity and emotion. Dreams are likely to have messages. LIBRA: Poetic insights keep running around in your brain. It’s a lovely day in the neighborhood and you’re ready to leave your imprint on it. Share your wit and wisdom with friends and siblings. The new moon emphasizes duality and diversity. SCORPIO: Celebrate the end of your season in Scorpio style. That means the spiritual meets the sexual, the creative comes from a deep place, and self-healing is working miracles. The new moon shines a light on your material values. Time to get rid of stuff. SAGITTARIUS: The new moon Sunday is all about you and life’s great adventure. You’ve got beauty on your side and good fortune where people notice. Heck, you rule for the next four weeks. I feel like a party for you and your co-workers is in order. CAPRICORN: You will receive help during your time of crisis. You will extend help during other people’s time of crises. Embrace your dark side and understand why it exists. Clear up any debt and settle any unfinished business. Good karma takes good courage. AQUARIUS: Just when you need a little distraction, friends show up at your door. Your spiritual insights will be easier to share at this point. The new moon promotes parties, sporting events and philosophical debates. Try some exciting new food. PISCES: Share your newfound confidence and independence with others. Career ambitions come more into focus with the new moon. Accepting your own leadership abilities is a big issue for you. Let people know what skills and talents you have. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Jim Brown 11/20/57, John McVie 11/26/45, Charles Schultz 11/26/25 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
Erik Estrada & Orange Dreamsicles So on Thursday night, I’m at Charley’s in Paia to see Kanekoa and couldn’t take my eyes off this one table with five really attractive, young people. They were casually cool, shabbily chic, beautiful and looked like they didn’t have a care in the world. When the lei girl walked by with her basket, one of the couples bought the other couple leis. Then the other couple bought the first couple leis, too. It was so cute I wanted to vomit and I stopped staring at them. Then Elan from the John Moore Project sat next to me and made me laugh non-stop. My buddies John and Hans from Khrinj came in too, lookin’ all cute and metal-rific. Friday night, Jen and I went to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center to see Maui Film Festival’s Stoked: the Rise and Fall of Gator. It was a skateboarding documentary on this ‘80s skate pro who ended up losing his marbles and killing some poor girl in Southern California and is now in jail for a long, long time. There were lots of skate-punk eye-candy at the Candlelight Café: tons of tattooed, cutie boys and their young hottie girlfriends. We sat with Billy and Mike, and laughed at them squirming through the previews of My Life Without Me, heralded as a “heart wrenching indie answer to Terms of Endearment.” What guy wouldn’t squirm through that? Jen and I can’t wait to see it, though. The crowd inside was rambunctious. One guy in the mezzanine tried to cross the forbidden line in front of the projector to make shadow puppets on the gargantuan film screen. Afterwards, we went to Idini’s in Wailuku. After we finished our first drink, some guy at the bar said, “Well, if no one’s gonna talk to ya, I might as well buy you a drink.” Then some other guy who looked a heck of a lot like Erik Estrada kept making eyes at me. Jen called me the next morning. “Hey, Ponch called—he wants your number.” On Saturday night, Amy and I went to see the flamenco show, La Tania, at the MACC. It was amazing and we were understandably dramatic-gesture prone for the rest of the night. It was so good I did the flamenco all the way into the ladies room. The next day, we decided to go to Dollies in Kahana for a quiet lunch of pizza and beer. Being ignorant in the ways of football season, we didn’t realize the place would be packed with screaming fans watching the games on Dollies’ numerous TVs. At one point, Amy tried to be sociable on her way to the restroom and asked a woman in a red football jersey who won the game. “Which game? There were 11 today,” said the woman. “Oh!” said Amy, still determined to keep the conversation going. “Uh, the last game then?” “Well, there were two being played simultaneously,” said the female fan, obviously wondering why she was wasting her time with such a novice. Amy just smiled. On Monday night I went to the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina to see Marty Dread and DJ Boomshot. While I was waiting outside for Katy, a limo pulled up to the curb. About six guys got out, went up to the door and were told of the five-dollar cover charge. They refused to pay the meager fee and left. In their limo. At first, there weren’t many people inside and it was all guys. Marty looked worried and did an Orange Dreamsicle shot with us. But soon enough—actually, closer to midnight—the place filled up with girls. Dancing, drinking, laughing girls. It was fun and Marty was happy. I made conversation with this guy outside who was impressed by my furious note taking. Or he was making fun of me, I can’t be sure. Then the door guy was ogling one hot little mama in tight, tight jeans. “Damn! She oughta get that thang autographed!” he said. MTW
