LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THINKS WE’RE ‘NOTABLE’ Your newspaper wants to grow, according to your writers. It is suggested that if you want a quality newspaper you confine these “complaints” and mishmash to venting without the dirty language. Young people read this “gutter” stuff— and take it as license. It adds nothing to the quality of life and detracts from any notable articles that your newspaper publishes. One lady was particularly graphic in a previous issue—it’s not necessary to elaborate. Get rid of the gutter trash. -J. Charlie Taylor, Wailuku The Editor Responds: Get rid of the gutter trash? Sure, and while I’m at it I’ll wash the windows and vacuum the carpet. These are pretty harsh words from someone who doesn’t go for harsh words. But more to the point, which words, specifically, do you wish banned from this publication, Mr. I Love Free Speech As Long As It Doesn’t Hurt My Feelings? You see, it is necessary to elaborate. Yeah, that’s what I thought. So I guess I’ll just keep quoting people exactly as they talk. You see, changing someone’s quotes is considered kind of bad in this industry.
LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES? Yo Mealy Mouth! Your letter in the [Mar. 2, 2003] Maui Time needs to be muffled! You want bikes “no louder than an automobile????” As a resident who ALSO lives just off Kihei Rd., I find your AUTOMOBILES loud and obnoxious. And how about those garbage trucks at 5:15 in the morning? Why don’t we “shut them down as a public nuisance,” too! And you for possessing a mealy mouth? Did it ever occur to you that the rental place is renting to “visitors” who believe the “idyllic paradise” is riding a Harley on Maui? And you obviously know nothing
about the “type” of person that makes a motorcycle rider! They’re doctors and lawyers, CEOs and airline pilots, as well as your blue collarhard working man or woman. They are people with enough money to buy a $25,000 bike and a house off the highway. You, on the other hand, need a midnight ride by your house from 200 “attention craving, unintelligent, childlike, noisy and disturbing motorcyclists in need of mental help and decent mufflers.” And if you were listed, you’d have got it! Get a better job, move off the highway and away from the bars. Loud Pipes Save Lives!!! Morons like you are always trying to kill us. -Blue Collar guy saving for that house on the highway, via email
SOUND ADVICE I, for one, am glad that the Advice Goddess is gone. She never gave ME any advice that I could use. I thought she was a hack. On the other hand, Holoholo Girl is great. I think she is hilarious, and really turns me on to all the hot spots in Maui. YOU GO HOLOHOLO GIRL!!! -Stephanie Costas, Lahaina
CLARIFICATION The Suze Randall photo shoot described in “Fresh Faces” (Nov. 13, 2003) was not model Crystal’s first time before a camera, but was, actually her first shoot with a major professional photographer.

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the elderly white couple that assaulted my girlfriend and I for no reason at the C & K concert: No worry! What goes around comes around. And to the usher lady standing next to us that saw everything but didn’t want to help us: One day you’ll need help and I hope nobody helps you. And to the sackless security guys who did nothing to the couple that attacked us—even when they agreed that what the couple did to us was wrong and not acceptable: Your shirts should say “useless” instead of “security.” And to the blonde curly haired bitch who treated us like we were troublemakers: Take off the mask, Halloween is over. It’s funny, I’ve seen locals get kicked out of concerts just for being a little rowdy yet nothing happened to the white couple that put their hands on us. I guess white people do get preferential treatment. -Another discouraged Kanaka

Talking About Torture The School of the Americas’ bloody past reaches Maui Damien Lepkowski is a tall, imposing young man with long dreads, a heavy beard and intense but careful eyes. He lives in Rhode Island but was on Maui last week—partly because he spends some of the year here teaching and performing African percussion music and partly to talk about growing up listening to his father tell him of Latin American atrocities committed by soldiers trained by the U.S. Government. “My dad was a substance abuse counselor,” Lepkowski told a small gathering in one of the Maui Community College (MCC) lecture halls Nov. 21. “But on the side he would help the poor in Latin America. He’s been going down since the late 1980s. Most recently he’s been going to Colombia, where he talked with the wife of a governor who’d been murdered.” The men who’d committed the murders Lepkowski’s father spent so much of his life investigating were soldiers, usually crack troops. More often than not they were graduates of the U.S. Army’s School of the Americas (SOA), headquartered at Fort Benning, Georgia since 1984, when
the Panamanian government booted it from their soil. The school, a ridiculous and dangerous relic of the Cold War, instructed thousands of troops from El Salvador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala and a host of other nations in counter-insurgency, interrogation and torture. Hundreds of SOA graduates have been implicated in the killings of civilians, Jesuit priests, nuns and even infant children. In 1980 alone, Salvadoran SOA graduates murdered 900 men, women and children in the village of El Mozote, along with four American nuns in a separate incident. Yet the U.S. Army refuses to close the school, instead insisting that it teaches soldiers “human rights.” U.S. officials have boasted of the “10 heads of state” in Latin America that graduated from the School, but neglect to say not a single one came to power through a democratic election. In fact, one Army official has said that it’s unfair to brand the school a threat on the basis of a few “allegations of misconduct.” It is outrage at this willingness on the part of the U.S. Government to teach Latin American troops to torture and murder peas-
ants and nuns in the name of some mythical “Partnership in Democracy” that drives an increasing number of people to Benning every Nov. 21 to ask the Army to shut down the “School of Assassins.” Since heading to Fort Benning is a bit much to ask the average Maui resident, a couple dozen local peace activists and students met at MCC that night to talk about the SOA. There were a few handouts available, including a sample letter to congress saying “the Ft. Benning-based training school has had a new name on its door [Western
Hemisphere are standing up and demanding justice—no more murder in our name!” Those at MCC also viewed an hour-long film on Father Roy Bourgeous, the leading agitator in the fight against U.S. taxpayer-funded torture classes. SOA graduates have “killed a lot of poor people,” the Catholic priest and ex-naval officer said in the 1996 film. “It’s being done in our name.” As the film made clear, Bourgeous—who bears an uncanny resemblance to Gary Shandling—has spent over three years in fed-
HUNDREDS OF SOA GRADUATES HAVE BEEN IMPLICATED IN THE KILLINGS OF CIVILIANS, JESUIT PRIESTS, NUNS AND EVEN INFANT CHILDREN. Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC)] since Jan. 17, 2001, but these are cosmetic changes at best and the reasons to close the school still exist.” Another sheet, entitled “Justice for the people of the Americas!” was a bit stronger in its wording, though it also included tips on traveling to Benning, such as asking for the “SOA Watch group rate” at various area motels. “There can be no healing and reconciliation without truth, an apology and reparations to the thousands who suffered from SOA violence and oppressive U.S. foreign policy,” it said. “More and more people throughout the
eral prison for his activism, mostly for repeatedly breaking into Fort Benning. His first arrest came after he dressed as an Army officer, infiltrated the base with a couple cohorts, then blared a tape of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero’s last mass—the one that ended in 1980 when SOA-trained gunman machinegunned Romero on his own altar—to a barracks housing Salvadoran troops. “The real question is why do we want to train the armies down there?” asked Lepkowski as people left after the film ended. “It’s to control those areas, those resources, and it needs to stop.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, NOV. 17 The County Housing and Human Services Committee met again today to discuss Smith Development’s Pu’unoa Village, which is fast becoming everyone’s favorite “affordable housing” project in West Maui. A couple weeks ago, over 400 attended the last committee hearing on the, oh let’s call it “controversial” 254home plan. The meeting, which convened at 1:30 p.m. before a packed council chamber, still wasn’t over eight and a half hours later when committee chairman Joe Pontanilla adjourned it until Tuesday. While normally pro-development councilmembers like Riki Hokama and Dain Kane criticized the state official that put this thing—which the county planning department says won’t provide much actual affordable housing but will substantially increase West Maui traffic— on the fast-track with little “diligence,” it’s still expected to pass when the full council takes it up on Dec. 9.
TUESDAY, NOV. 18 If you thought the roosters were crowing something awful before, wait until they get a load of this. Maui County Council vice chairman Robert Carroll has just announced that the county Planning and Land Use Committee will shortly begin discussing an outright ban on keeping roosters in residential areas. “Disruptive agricultural activities shouldn’t be allowed in residential areas,” said Carroll
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
in a press release, which I believe is the first time in human history anyone has described a rooster crowing as a “disruptive agricultural activity.” “For much too long, many Maui County families have had to endure the effects of noisy crowing roosters that don’t belong in residential neighborhoods.” Has it really come to this? Will the police now be knocking on people’s doors, asking to inspect for the presence of illegal chickens?
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19 County what got no money, says today’s Maui News. Rather, they have very little—just $4.4 million will carry over from fiscal year 2003, said County Finance Director Keith Regan. Of course, even this worrisome news can be spun—Regan said he’d expected the carry-over savings to be just $1.7 million. But it isn’t much of a spin, considering that Regan said the savings need to be “between $8 million and $16 milllion”… While we’re perusing the News, I’ve got a couple questions concerning the front-page story “‘Teamwork’ gets trapped hikers out of lava tube,” which detailed a rescue early Tuesday morning of a few dozen people caught in a flash flood while illegally hiking in a bamboo forest near Kailua just off the Hana Highway. The story included this intriguing tidbit, written in classic tin can Maui News style: “members of a yoga group were rescued naked after their clothing and backpacks were swept away by the flash flood.” Illegal extreme naked power yoga in a flooded bamboo forest just off the Hana Highway? I so want to get in on that!
OVERHEARD... “WHO GIVES A SHIT? JUST GET OVER IT. I GET KICKED OUT OF BARS ALL THE TIME. YOU SHOULD JUST GET OVER IT. THE OTHER NIGHT ME AND [NAME DELETED] GOT KICKED OUT OF KIMO’S. WHAT DID WE DO? WE JUST WENT TO ANOTHER BAR. YOU NEED TO GET OVER IT.” -Guy to his girlfriend after walking into Hard Rock Café, Nov. 20
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
THURSDAY, NOV. 20 Forgot something from yesterday’s Maui News. Amongst the letters to the editor denouncing slow drivers, fast drivers, drivers who don’t give motorcycle riders enough room and the horrors of leaf blowers and eating turkey on Thanksgiving was this gem from Paul Mullin of Maunaloa, Molokai. Mullin decried the use of the dreaded “H word.” “The use of the ‘H’ word should be no less despicable than other racial epithets,” he wrote. “Come on, folks, racism is no prettier with a Polynesian face than it is from white-hooded Klansman or a jackbooted Nazi.”
Unfortunately, Mullin neglected to mention what exactly the “H word” was. Did he mean “haole” or “honkey” or some other term I haven’t yet discovered? Come on, Mullin, I want to get my bigotry straight. But “cracker” and “whitey” are still okay, right?
FRIDAY, NOV. 21 Congressman Ed “One Press Release A Day” Case (D, all nonHonolulu Hawaii) is now taking on the Army National Guard. He wants to know why ANG guys have been sent to fight in Iraq with crappy, obsolete body armor. Glad to hear it. Now how about asking some more detailed questions, like the reason 180 Army, National Guard and Army reserve soldiers have been killed in action in Iraq since Dubya declared an end to “major combat,” yet just a single Marine has been killed by hostile fire in the same time period, and he died way back on July 15. Now that I think about it, why don’t you just ask what the hell we’re doing over there, besides making the locals really, really mad?… Remember the famed “Olinda Big Cat”—the one that was such a dangerous menace Maui Weekly flew in a big game hunter to advise on how to capture the godless beast? And the rest of the media followed so hysterically that the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) got into the act, flying in their own specialists and setting up 19 snares throughout Olinda’s gulches? Well, as of today DLNR is disengaging the snares. Their reason? The Big Cat has up and vanished. Yup. Damned thing hasn’t been seen for weeks, and the state is tired of expending a “large investment of manpower” to try to find the creature. DLNR reasons the cat may have either moved on to another part of the island or went back to its owner or, possibly, is dead. Those are pretty good, but since theories are cheap, let me offer one of my own: It never existed. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORY In November, just three days after a published report that lawyers were about to collect $350 million on the settlement for the 1988 Pan Am flight 103 explosion (with another $480 million to come, under certain conditions), two Massachusetts law firms sued the state over the 1998 tobacco settlement, claiming that the $775 million in fees they were awarded by an arbitration panel was not enough. The firms say they are due $1.3 billion more under their original contract, although other law firms in the 46-state settlement so far have accepted the arbitrators’ awards. A Massachusetts official said a $775 million fee works out to about $6,300 per lawyer-hour and a $2.075 billion fee to about $17,000 per lawyer-hour.
HIGH-IQ MISHAPS According to a September safety hearing, British brain surgeon Donald Campbell, 54, crashed his twin-engine plane into a house (he survived, with head injuries) when he ran out of fuel because he miscalculated when converting “gallons” to “liters” (Shoreham, England). And internationally renowned neuroscientist Patricia Goldman-Rakic, 66, was fatally run over in August while jaywalking (and police said the driver was not at fault) (Hamden, Conn.).
LONG SHOT In July, a judge relented and allowed Richard Quinton Gunn to act as his own attorney in his aggravated-murder appeal, following his conviction earlier in the year in Ogden, Utah, by a jury that deliberated just two hours. Gunn had confessed, saying he killed his tenant using a crowbar, a butcher knife, a handsaw, a fireplace poker, a 12-inch bolt, a straight-edge
BY CHUCK SHEPHERD
razor, an ax, walking canes, a pool cue and a large salad fork.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Denver Garrett, charged with cocaine possession in Monterey, Tenn., in October, told police he bought it only to keep it off the streets and away from children. And James Howle, 61, and Kevin Williams, 41, stabbed each other in Pomona, Calif., in October in an argument over which of their two unidentified alcoholic beverages tastes better.
PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Loren J. Adams, 40, was convicted in Indianapolis of distributing obscenity in May, based on a business venture that apparently emanated from his admitted interest in watching scenes of bestiality. Not only did Adams’ Web site offer videos of people having sex with horses, snakes, etc., but Adams at one time offered to rent out his 3-year-old Great Dane, Tyson, for others’ sex videos. (Tyson was removed from the home, and Adams still faces a civil charge of animal cruelty, according to a September report in the Indianapolis Star).

READERS’ CHOICE On Oct. 29, thousands of rush-hour riders had to be rerouted on New York City commuter trains as firefighters tried to free Edwin Gallart, 41, whose arm got stuck in one train’s toilet when he reached in to retrieve his fallen cell phone. (Ultimately, the toilet had to be ripped out.) And the next day in South Philadelphia, a 25-year-old man who had apparently been indecently exposing himself to girls and women in the neighborhood for several weeks, tried it one time too many and was chased by “20 to 30” girls from St. Maria Goretti High School, caught, roughed up, and held for police.

Afghan Road To Ruin We’re spending too much, getting too little It only takes an hour to understand why one of Afghanistan’s top priorities is road building. My November 2001 trip from the border with Tajikistan to the capital of Takhar province, a little over a hundred miles long, would take about an hour and a half in the United States. But most of this backbreaking, bone-crushing ordeal is spent pounding tire ruts and rocks across a liberally mined desert that shows no sign of ever having been paved. Soviet, mujahedeen, Taliban, Northern Alliance or American armies have blown up most of the bridges. Motorists are forced to ford a full-fledged, five-foot deep river, two large creeks and an uncountable number of axle-shattering gaps in the road. For a few hundred thousand crisp afghanis, local entrepreneurs improvise bridges out of dead tree limbs to support each vehicle for the few seconds needed to cross these abysses. Fifteen hours after we set out from the Pyanj River border outpost, my convoy
project, which would carry Caspian Sea natural gas from fields in Turkmenistan across Afghanistan to a Pakistani port on the Indian Ocean, is one attempt to revive the fabled Silk Road. According to Turkmen officials, Afghans would receive eight percent of revenues in the form of transit fees. But pipelines need service roads. TAP would run alongside the Herat-toKandahar highway, so the American and Saudi governments have committed $180 million of the estimated $250 million needed to pave it. Afghans will tell you that, along with the need for security, running water and electricity, roads are on top of their wish list. Wellmaintained roads would allow Afghans to make money the old-fashioned way—by taking a cut on the stuff they move around. Divided by religious, political and tribal fissures, Afghanistan doesn’t stand a chance of becoming a unified or centralized nation-state without a high-quality lattice of asphalt linking and pulling together its disparate nether regions. At present, Afghanistan, a Texas-sized nation of 17 million people, has only five mar-
AT PRESENT, AFGHANISTAN, A TEXAS-SIZED NATION OF 17 MILLION PEOPLE, HAS ONLY FIVE MARGINALLY PAVED HIGHWAYS TOTALING 1,675 MILES. rolled into Taloqan. We’d ducked bandits, U.S. warplanes and rampaging militiamen to get there, but the road itself had been the worst obstacle. It took four days to shake the ringing in my ears, the result of syncopated whiplash and hundreds of serial concussions as my skull smacked into the roof of my rented truck. With an average per capita annual income of $200, Afghanistan’s economy is in ruins. Even if exports of hand-woven carpets, jewelry, rubies, pomegranates and modest oil reserves were to return to prewar levels of the 1960s, it would be impossible to generate the $45 billion Karzai estimates will be needed to build modern-quality infrastructure. Afghanistan’s future was sealed by two factors: its paucity of natural resources and its role as a mountainous buffer state between czarist Russian and British India. People, goods and services traveling overland between Central and South Asia have always had to pass through Afghanistan—and they’ve paid for the privilege. If Afghanistan is to become economically viable without exporting heroin or remaining in a state of permanent war, it must reprise its role as Asia’s most ferocious collectors of tolls and tariffs. The Asian Development Bank’s $3 billion Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline (TAP)
ginally paved highways totaling 1,675 miles. (Texas has 79,185.) The Wakhan Corridor, the finger-shaped province that connects northeastern Afghanistan to China, doesn’t even have a single dirt road to its name. In most areas, a road like the one I took to Taloqan is as good as it gets. But only one road in Afghanistan will host a multi billion dollar energy pipeline—and it looks like that’s the only one we’re going to pave. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage recently asked Congress for $1.14 billion for Afghan aid—just 10 to 20 percent of the $5 to $10 billion most conservative experts believe is be needed. But, according to CARE Afghanistan, only 40 percent of the money is slated for long-term development. Meanwhile, ordinary Afghans have seen no meaningful improvement in their lives. Reshad, a 19-year-old whose father works for the Afghan Finance Ministry, told The Washington Post that his family hadn’t gotten a paycheck in months. “We sold the carpets and the refrigerator,” he said. “Now we’ll borrow money to live. Finally, we’ll have to start stealing something to eat. We’ll join the Taliban just to support our family. If they give us money, we’ll join them.” He may want to rethink that plan. Talibanheld provinces, after all, are at least a hundred miles away from Kabul. Who wants to deal with those atrocious roads? MTW

There are only 7,000-8,000 humpback whales surviving today. An adult whale is 45 feet long and weighs 40 tons. Baby whales born in Maui waters weigh a mere 2,000 pounds.” ● Pronunciation Guide and dictionary for various Hawaiian words, such as holoholo (“hoo-low-hoo-low: run

According to the recap, that game—which Chaminade won 77-72—has been “hailed by the national media as ‘the biggest upset in the history of college basketball.’” ● Letter from Maui County Mayor Alan M. Arakawa—complete with photo of him in his trademark aloha shirt and lei— saying that “besides the outstanding athleticism that the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational brings to our island, this year’s tournament will also feature a Coaches and Kids Free-Throw Contest where lucky Maui students will be teamed with participating basketball coaches to benefit the students’ schools.” (The contest, held right after Sunday’s 8 a.m. press conference and before the coaches posed with their official EA SPORTS Maui Invitational surf boards, was won by Paul Salvador of Lahaina Middle School and Steve Fisher of San Diego State University, for which Lahaina got a giant check for $300). ● Biographies of all the coaches like Fisher (who told the media Sunday “I’m going to have a seminar on deep sea fishing—how to catch the biggest fish on Maui”), Central Michigan’s Jay Smith (“I’m not sure how we’re going to play… we’re a bunch of munchkins”), Ohio State’s Jim O’Brien (“We’re in a little bit of shambles right now”) and University of Hawaii’s Riley Wallace (“We’re 0-1 right now. He rather looks like a farmer. A good, kindly, hard-working farmer, with broad hands and an easy, grandfatherly smile. That he’s actually a calculating, brilliant attorney and powerful public official whose reach stretches statewide seems, well, wrong. But he is. And even if you’ve never heard of him, Lawrence N. C. Ing is one of the most popular guys on Maui. He’s a successful Wailuku attorney with friends and associates all over Hawaii. He’s also a well-respected fixture in the Maui charity world. And he’s the chairman of the State Land Use Commission, a powerful “quasi-judicial” body charged with overseeing all potential land use changes throughout Hawaii larger than 15 acres. Even slow-growth activists profoundly disturbed by the LUC’s repeated willingness to allow developers to build on tens of thousands of acres of agricultural land say Ing is an honorable, good-natured man. Whether Ing is impartial is another matter. There’s his near-perfect pro-development voting record, sure, but he also maintains a few cozy relationships with current and former officials from two major Maui land developers with business before the LUC. These relationships are obvious from even a cursory examination of two publicly available lists. The first list itemizes three petitions put forward to the LUC by the developers Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and Alexander & Baldwin Properties in the past year. The first is A & B’s proposal to build on 138 acres of agricultural land behind the Kahului Wal-Mart. And there are two proposals from Maui Land & Pine—
“No one thinks these things are strange,” said one long-time observer of local politics. “The Cameron Center does a lot of good in the community. But questioning Ing’s involvement with board members who work for developers—that would be stretching it for people.” Still, the coziness is troubling, especially considering the LUC’s notorious relationship as a virtual rubber-stamp for developers. It doesn’t help matters that Ing hasn’t publicly disclosed the relationships during LUC hearings this year—especially considering that Ing has recently disclosed similar relationships with other developers. For instance, at the start of the April 9, 2003 LUC hearing on the plan by developers Peter Martin and Jim Riley—currently two of the three backers of the controversial Pu’unoa Village project—to turn 4,500 acres of Lanuniupoko agricultural land into residential subdivisions, the hearing minutes show that Ing disclosed he had known both men “for over 30 years and that he represented them over 20 years ago.” The minutes show Ing denied having a “continuing personal relationship” with either Martin or Riley, then asked if anyone objected to his chairing the hearing. Hearing none, he convened the hearing. For his part, Ing politely refused to cooperate with this story. “Because [the Commission] is quasi-judicial, I can’t do an interview,” said Ing. “It’s like asking a judge to comment on matters before him. This is why you never see interviews with LUC commissioners.”
Despite Ing’s insistence that it’s unethical for him to give media interviews, here’s Ing chatting with Maui News reporter Harry Eagar during a break in the Nov. 20 LUC hearing.
the
Commissioner Lawrence Ing knows who his friends are the Upcountry Town Center on 40.6 acres in Pukalani and the Kapalua Resort expansion, which will eat up 790 acres of farmland and was the subject of a Nov. 20 LUC hearing. The second list names the board of directors of the non-profit J. Walter Cameron Center. On that list is Ing’s name, as well as three current and former key officials with Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and Alexander & Baldwin Properties. To be fair, there’s no indication these relationships are illegal or even unethical. The state ethics statutes only prohibit a commissioner from “taking official action that directly and specifically affects a business or undertaking in which he has a substantial financial interest.” Nothing like that exists here. Nor has anyone ever filed a complaint with the State Ethics Commission alleging that his close proximity to current and former officials tied to developers pleading their case before him constitutes an ethical breach.

The link between the world of development and Ing’s chairmanship of the LUC is the J. Walter Cameron Center, where Ing has served as board of directors vice chairman since 1997. The Center’s very name invites questions about Ing’s involvement. The Cameron who founded the Center is the same man who, in 1969, carved the Maui Land & Pineapple Co. out of Alexander & Baldwin. For nearly four decades the Center has been one of the most prominent and generous charitable organizations on Maui. Its maze-like offices in Wailuku house 15 groups providing mental health therapy, substance abuse assistance, infant daycare and consumer credit, among other services. “He’s very involved and very bright,” said Cameron Center President Audrey Rocha Reed. “He can see things sometimes that others can’t. He understands how people have struggled to earn a living. He’s very down-to-earth.” The Center’s board of directors meets once
a month. They’re a Who’s Who of Maui’s rich and powerful. In addition to Ing, Democratic state legislator Joseph Souki (8th District) is a director. So is Wailea Resort Senior Vice President Clyde Murashige. As is Hideo Kawahara, A & B’s manager of engineering and construction. Mary Cameron Sanford, Maui Land & Pine’s Director Emeritus, also sits on the board. So does Dr. Fumio Tsuji, a dentist who’s served as Maui Land & Pine General Manager as well as Chairman of the Board of A & B. Kawahara downplayed his relationship with Ing. “I know Larry, but don’t know him that well,” he said. “I’ve known him through our business from time to time. Some of our children are about the same age, too. He’s an overall good person. He’s helped a lot of non-profits.” Tsuji and Sanford did not respond to requests for comment by press time. For someone of Ing’s stature and power, he
– By Anthony Pignataro – keeps a very low profile. “That’s Larry,” said one of Ing’s law clients. “He doesn’t want to be in the limelight. He’s very low key and very sharp.” Ing’s wish to stay out of the public spotlight meshes nicely with the LUC. While Commission hearings are open to the public—as much of the public that can make it to 9:30 a.m. hearings in Wailea, that is—the panel itself is shrouded in secrecy. For example, their financial disclosure statements—listing all their personal investments and such and normally considered public documents—are explicitly exempt from public disclosure by the state ethics statues. Ing is nearing the end of his second fouryear term on the LUC, having first gotten appointed to the Commission on July 1, 1996. When he leaves the Commission next June 30, he’ll have to wait four years before he can return, if he should so choose.
Not that he needs to. Ing’ s a partner in the successful law firm Ing, Horikawa & Jorgensen (David Jorgensen represents Maui Time Productions, Inc., the paper’s parent company). In the 1980s he served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge—one appointed by the district court to handle various civil cases and preliminary hearings. Around that time he also served on the Hawaii Housing Authority (HHA), today known as the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii (HCDCH)—the same body that recently voted unanimously to fast track the Pu’unoa project. And, of course, he could always find work in the private sector. After all, he and Maui’s most powerful developers go way back. Ing earned two brief mentions in the superlative 1985 book Land and Power in Hawaii, written by George Cooper and Gavan Daws. In the book, Ing appears in two lists, but these chronicle the “extensive” real estate investments Ing made on Maui while a magistrate judge and HHA member. “Before and in office,” Cooper and Daws wrote, Ing was “involved with numerous condominium projects in Kihei, including the Leinaala, Moana, White Sea Terrace, Na Holokai [and] The Gardens.” Cooper and Daws added that, “as investor [he] held interests in parcels on which were later built Waipuilani, Maui Villa, Princess Iolani [and] Kihei Alii Kai.” Longtime LUC observers and activists say Ing has rarely, if ever, opposed development. That being said, there is no question Ing works hard. Every week each commissioner receives a stack of papers between three inches and a foot thick, containing the environmental and legal documents they need to digest before the upcoming meeting. “You can’t read everything in detail,” said one official close to the Commission. “But you have to browse them enough to be able to question witnesses. If you want to take it seriously, then you have to do a significant amount of preparation. And don’t forget that having four days out of the office every month is significant. “Ing always came prepared for meetings,” said the official. “Transportation was a big issue for him. He always seemed to be the most knowledgeable about it.” The LUC represents a variety of backgrounds—organized labor, science, law—and are chosen so that each island is represented. The LUC meets four times a month throughout the state. The danger longtime observers have noticed is that Commissioners tend to defer to the member from whatever island has jurisdiction over their current petition. That means Ing is the LUC’s go-to guy on all Maui development projects. The LUC was created by the Democratcontrolled state legislature in 1961. Ironically, one of its original mandates—written into the state constitution—was to preserve agricultural land as much as possible. In 1974, when then-LUC Chairman Eddie Tangen complained of public “disruptive demonstrations”—too many citizens were

appearing at hearings and using their constitutionally guaranteed rights to speak out for his tastes—the state legislature turned the LUC into a “quasi-judicial” body, with hearings taking on a more court-like appearance. The result, according to Cooper and Daws, was what Tangen wanted all along: “far less direct public input at LUC hearings.” But by then, close ties between the LUC and the development community were virtually ironclad. “[A]s in most other land-related matters in the Democratic years,” wrote Cooper and Daws, “interconnections were so extensive that such distinctions as ‘public sector’ and ‘private sector’ had no important meaning.” The danger of such a confluence was obvious—developers would basically get what they want, even if that took away valuable ag land. It is a danger that researcher Ken Lowry says actually occurred. Cooper and Daws quoted from his results after he examined all LUC petitions filed between 1964 and 1975 that designated urban land: “The most striking characteristic (of most of the petitions) is that in spite of the express goal of the law to protect agricultural land, agricultural suitability does not appear to have been a major factor in Commission decision-making.”

During the Nov. 20 LUC hearing on Maui Land & Pine’s Kapalua expansion proposal, Ing politely swore in public witnesses—“Do you swear to tell the truth in this matter?”—but rarely paid much attention to them, especially when they spoke critically of the petition. Of course, in the old days, observers say Ing was all but hostile to members of the public who dared testify at LUC hearings. “He didn’t seem to like the public coming to the meetings,” said one former local official who witnessed many of Ing’s earliest hearings. “He was rude to some public witnesses. He would ask questions in a rude way. He talked back to them. “But after a while,” the former official said, “he started to become more welcoming. He seemed to no longer see things so black and white. He mellowed—not enough to vote against development, but at least enough to try to make development more responsible.” MTW

Learning To Like Kihei Big Wave Café has a lot to do with it I have to admit I am beginning to like Kihei. Always the brunt of my jokes, Kihei has been the pitiful stepchild of my Maui heart. But now I have to eat my words, literally, because—man, Kihei folks have got it all. I can no longer call it the armpit of Maui. The south side boasts new restaurants, the late night action, the she-she shops in Wailea, all along a two-lane highway. How can this be? I find myself driving from the west side to the south side for escapades in food and fun, when I used to scoff at the idea. My mom and I decided to forego our usual K-mart extravaganza for shopping in Wailea one Saturday, and at the end of our four-hour stint we found ourselves starving and thirsty, badly in need of lunch. I was dying to try the

The vegetable beef soup was wonderful, tender pieces of beef in a broth with potato, carrots and onions. The salad was big enough for two and the balsamic vinaigrette I ordered was tasty on the fresh cool greens. Becky said the chicken satay was terrific, every morsel disappeared with ease. Our turkey sandwich was packed with flavor, served with cranberry mayonnaise and thin slices of honey smoked turkey on a toasted croissant with a side of pasta salad. You can definitely see touches of chef/owner Raul Bermudez’s island experience and passion for innovation sprinkled throughout the menu. Big Wave Café since they had just barely opened their doors before winning the appetizer competition at Taste of Lahaina in September. As I perused the menu I lamented that they weren’t closer to home. Big Wave Café has a terrific selection, serving food from 7:30 a.m through 9 p.m. daily. Their breakfast alone is worth the drive back, and it is served all day till 2 p.m. But I was here for lunch, and determined to make the most it. Mom and I started with fresh brewed ice teas with lemon ($1.95), while my sister, Becky, went for the Mocha Latte Frappe ($2.95). To begin our feast we decided on the lobster and sweet corn fritter with furikake tartar sauce ($6.95) and the coconut shrimp with fruit salsa and ginger lilikoi sauce ($6.95). Savoring those lobster fritters I can see why those judges voted this dish number one at Taste of Lahaina. They are divine. We devoured the coconut shrimp along with the scrumptious fruit salsa. The large juicy pieces of mango went perfectly with the

It’s great to see Bermudez, a local boy, breaking out from under the corporate strongholds and opening up his own café. He has paid his dues in the island’s food and beverage industry coming from the Kea Lani Resort, and more recently as the executive chef at the Five Palms Restaurant and Canoes Restaurant. His nondescript café décor at Big Wave Café allows you to focus on the extraordinary fare at hand, and get down to business, whether you choose to dine inside or out on the patio. Mom summed it up with, “This is a big and fancy Pacific Rim dining experience in a small café.” I am inclined to agree. Chef Bermudez insists size doesn’t matter. His seemingly small café is serving up giant servings of his island creations to lots of malahini and kamaaina alike. Surf the Big Wave Café at 1215 South Kihei Road in Kihei. ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT
BY SAM CAMPOS
Sweet, Sweet Music They won the Hard Rock Café’s Battle of the Bands on Maui a few months ago. They finished sixth out of 900 bands that applied at 25 Hard Rock Café locations nationwide. They play regular gigs at Mulligan’s, Life’s A Beach, Charley’s, SandBar and Livewire Café. All in just one year. They also still garner gushing praise from everyone who attended the Mulligan’s St. Patrick’s Day mega-concert. They played two long sets that day, in between good ol’ Irish cheer and mayhem, well into the night. “Until they were sweeping the stage off,” said Elan Rae, hand percussionist for the twomember band. “And we still kept playing.” “We played until I broke all my guitar strings!” said John Moore, songwriter and guitarist. “Then I borrowed some guy’s guitar and broke his strings.” He laughs. “I sung the same song twice in a row ‘cause I was so drunk, and I didn’t even know it until I saw it on video.” “That was fun,” said Rae. “That was one of my favorite shows.” Moore and Rae met while playing music individually at various bars around Galveston, Texas. They had an instant musi-
cal chemistry and began performing their original “acoustic based, funk-rock” together, immediately making plans to record an album and tour. But Moore had to get something out of the way first. He wrote a song called “Eddie Aikau” that was his dream to be able to perform at the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational on Oahu. His plan was to come to Maui for a month, then try to connect with Quiksilver so that he could perform at the highly coveted surf celebration. He got a job that first week, enthusiastic response at all of the open mics he played and then called Rae. “He said, ‘guess what man, if you move to Maui, you’ve got a place to live, a car, gigs to play, beaches, and all kinds of great things!’” recalled Rae. “And I said, ‘well, I’ll come out for six weeks’—that was eleven months ago.” And this year, Moore will be playing the Eddie. “Dreams come true!” said Rae. Moore grew up listening to Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Cat Stevens, Chaka Khan, White Lion, Europe and Pavarotti. Now, he listens to others like Ben Harper and Bob Marley. “One of my biggest influences is Nirvana, actually,” he said. “The thing which makes me the most happy in the whole world is playing a show, and open-

The John Moore Project plays on common ground
Elan Rae and John Moore ing my eyes halfway through a song, and seeing everyone full-on listening and really enjoying it,” said Moore. “But if I have to talk to people afterwards, I’m really kind of shy.” Rae has been playing drums for 20 years but discovered his love for hand percussion when his mom began taking him to Rainbow Gatherings with her hippie friends. It was at the drum circles that Rae “figured out that if I put just one beat in the right spot, I could be heard.” In his quest for percussion harmonizing, Rae traveled Europe and Australia, playing various hand percussion drums like timbales and congas “and anything that was loud.” He also played with everyone he could, no matter what kind of music— rock, jazz or punk, it didn’t matter.

“I developed this ability to listen to music and understand where I can fit in. And that to me was the most pleasurable experience ever. It was equal to sex, to drugs, to anything!” Rae said. “It’s an addiction to balance.” “I want to play music in front of 50,000 people,” said Moore. Moore and Rae are planning a tour on the West Coast, as well as Europe, after their CD is released Dec. 3. “I just want to play for as many people as I can.” The John Moore Project will be at Charley’s this Friday, with guest musicians Matt Moreau, kit drummer, and Tim Jarrells, bass guitarist. Murphy Manor Eddie Murphy bites the heads off scenery When a Disney ride becomes a movie, there’s not much hope that things will turn out as well as they do in this tame horror comedy aimed at the preteen set. Eddie Murphy is an ambitious and cheesy realtor who sidetracks his family’s vacation to make a deal on an old mansion overlooking a cemetery. Terence Stamp is effectively droll as the mansion’s evil butler intent on forcing Murphy’s beautiful

★★★★★
wife Marsha Thomason into marrying Nathaniel Parker, the lord of the creepy mansion. Filled with vaporizing ghosts, secret passages and zombies, The Haunted Mansion is an effortless joyride with Eddie Murphy as your comical guide. The Haunted Mansion has an intoxicating lighting and production design (Remi Adefarasin Director of Photography) that shimmers and glows with hues of blue, green and red implying a treasure trove of
comic riches. There is a great nod to Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein (1974) when Jerry comments on the size of the knockers on the mansion’s giant doors. Eddie Murphy plays the line for all it’s worth and comes away stirring up laughter. Murphy is a master of physical comedy and verbal delivery. He works well at holding the film’s quick tempo with his body while modulating its witty dialogue in medium and bright tambours with his voice. Terrence Stamp (The Limey) adds an equally light-footed contribution, as the mansion’s acrid butler Ramsley, with a mortician’s look and similar bedside manner. Stamp articulates every syllable, vowel and consonant with a controlled vocal precision that more than hints at his character’s potential wrath. Indeed, when Jerry and Ramsley come to blows, Stamp lets loose with a fury that demonstrates Ramsley’s wellspring of strength and dark power to rule the house. Animator Rob Minkoff makes convincing debuts in the realm of feature film directing after his feature animation debut with The Lion King. Minkoff embellishes Haunted Mansion’s gothic visual themes with loving attention to scenes. There’s a suicide-by-hanging-in-the-
tower opener that rings with all of the soap opera shock tactics that Britain’s Hammer Studios gave audiences with their Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee vampire movies in the late ‘50 and ‘60s. Minkoff maintains a refreshing formal predilection in his compositions to keep the b-movie storytelling specific to the film’s simple yet humorous plotline. A series of hallmark storybook devices work dutifully well for younger audiences, such as a quartet of harmonizing busts who burst into four-part harmony with songs inspired by what anyone last uttered. A giant green-glowing crystal ball houses Jennifer Tilly’s (Bound) head as Madame Leota, a medusa inspired fortuneteller who gives Jerry helpful advice at rescuing his wife from the lusty clutches of Master Gracie (Nathaniel Parker—Mel Gibson’s Hamlet). But it’s the film’s beautifully crafted zombies that ramp up the freight elements of the movie and send the film’s climax off on a proper trajectory of ghoulish hokum. Eddie Murphy is a bankable comedian in need of a Mel Brooks kind of writer to write films specifically for him. I believe Murphy is a comic genius capable of much more than he is being challenged with in his script choices. While The Haunted Mansion is a big improvement over Murphy’s last disappointing film, Daddy Day Care, it doesn’t bring anything from Murphy that we haven’t already seen and he’s capable of delivering more levels in his comedy. Eddie Murphy has kept his young good looks from the days of Walter Hill’s 48 Hours (1982), and
Eddie Murphy rocks the funny house polished his acting style to a high gloss, yet he remains stuck in a type-cast that gives him no cause to rise beyond stock comic habits. Nonetheless, Eddie Murphy rocks the funny house in The Haunted Mansion with the assistance of a strong ensemble. Rated PG 98 mins. MTW

Hawaiian Justice Wed., 6:30 p.m., Maui Community College Student Lounge There’s a lot going on right now with the Hawaiian people: discrimination lawsuits against the Kamehameha schools; the long-awaited return of Kaho’olawe from the U.S. Navy, ever-increasing conversion of their once-sacred land to golf courses and timeshare condos. They already have a massive power-base: tens of thousands of highly motivated, active citizens statewide. All they need to fight and win in the modern political world is to speak with one voice. If they ever get that, they could do anything, even bring back the monarch. That’s why it’s important for you—be you Hawaiian or nonHawaiian—to get informed on all the latest issues and attend this Office of Hawaiian Affairs meeting. Besides, they’re serving “heavy pupus.” Who doesn’t want that? For more information call 243-5219. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
Surfing Sells! Saturday, 6 p.m. at Hapa’s in Kihei After a three-year break from filmmaking, Taylor Steele releases this hilarious story of mass media’s fascination with and misconception of surfing culture as a target for corporate marketing, in Campaign. The film features top surfers such as Andy and Bruce Irons, Shane Dorian, Rob Machado, Benji Weatherley, Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning, Joe Parkinson, Dean Morrison, Kalani Robb, The Hobgoods, Taylor Knox, Donovan, Dane Reynolds and more. And, of course, killer global surf action from Hawaii, Australia, Indonesia, California, East Coast and Mexico. This is an all ages event. Tickets for adults are $4; youth 12 and under get in for $2.
Kucinich Needs Money Sunday, 12-6 p.m., Kula Community Center Like it or not, Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich wants to be President of the United States. But it’s hard to imagine a man like Kucinich in the White House—he’s an honest, progressive pacifist who is sick of the Bush Administration’s corrupt wars of aggression in the Middle East and—get this—wants to break the stranglehold greedy multi-national corporations hold over this country. Oh yeah, Washington would welcome him with open arms. He may not have a chance, but as long as he runs he forces the other candidates and the media to address issues facing working people. It’s fundraisers like these that get Kucinich the money needed to stay in the race. Oh yeah—Gail Swanson, John Moore Project and others will perform. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Eat, Drink & Watch Movies Friday at the Castle Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center Happy Thanksgiving! Okay, so when you’re totally busting at the seams from Thursday’s feast, what better way to chill out on Friday than in the comfort of a cushy chair and a big screen? And if you just want to get away from the temptations of turkey leftovers at home, check out the Maui Film Festival’s extra day of screenings with Whale Rider and The Legend of Surioyothai. Both movies look gorgeous and hopefully distracting enough to alleviate the guilt of having polished off the rest of that damn pumpkin pie…again!

COVER STORY
JET “GET BORN” Apparently the whole retro-rock thing is really chic right now and boy do I hate chic, but then again if the trend is to try to resurrect the hard rock vibe of the ‘70s then so be it. Bring it on—let’s rock! Along with the King’s Of Leon, Australia’s Jet is the latest hip entry in the category I like to call “Bands most likely to proudly carry the flag of old school Rock & Roll and finally convince the Rolling Stones to quit.” Their first single “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” is as infectious as a case of Ebola! I swear, if this song was any catchier you’d need a vaccine for it. While Jet is more than capable of tearin’ it up ala-Buckcherry, they bust out quite a few piano layered, Beatlesque moments. I wasn’t surprised to learn that Jet has toured with Oasis and cites them along with The Kinks as influences. Jet is really chic right now, but I’ll be listening to this one long down the road. —Elektra 2003 [SPIKE FUQUA]
PJ HARVEY “TO BRING YOU MY LOVE” When guys try to rip on me for my affinity towards female musicians, I whip out the PJ Harvey and scare the shit out of ‘em. Works every time. She sighs and moans, growls and power wails with uncanny melodic and agile vocals and a passion, intensity and raw like-a-bleeding-scab emotion. The title track and “Send His Love To Me” are both powerful and imploring lamentations that maintain Polly Jean Harvey’s femininity and strength as a woman as well as a kickass rock musician. And it’s got “C’Mon Billy”—the most scathing, romantic and catchy ode ever. When I lived in the seedy underbelly of San Francisco’s Western Addition, I used to plug my roommate’s electric guitar into the amp, turn on this CD, and rock out. All the crackheads and prostitutes on the street really dug it, so maybe you will, too! —Island Records 1995 [SAM CAMPOS]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “SALSA AROUND THE WORLD” Salsa, born in the Spanish Caribbean, has certainly gone global. Its worldwide appeal spreads from Cuba to Japan, Finland to the Friday night classes at the Haiku Marketplace. This compilation shows how salsa lifts people’s sprits and gets their hips shaking in several different languages and in disparate countries. The most traditional inclusion is by Havana Mambo, a group of Cuban immigrants living in Italy. Their catchy tune, “Malañina,” about a girl who provoked her lover so much he just left her behind and went out dancing by himself to meet a nice girl. Orquesta de La Luz, from Japan, comes in with a beautiful song that could easily be from Puerto Rico. Shaan, from India, sings his salsa number in Hindi with a funny Bollywood style to it. Overall, this CD intrigues with songs in Greek, Arabic, Haitian Creole, and Senegalese Wolof, among others. It never fails to delight. —Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

“SHADOW ZONE” I like Static-X about 35% of the time. This is the third outing from these purveyors of “Disco Metal” and while most of this stuff is heavy, Static-X mix it up with rave-ready techno beats. It’s the lack of consistency that’s puzzling, I don’t know what’s up but all three records seem to have three or four kick-ass songs, four or five mediocre songs, and a couple that just suck. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ll gladly pay the cash for one or two really good tracks, but if they can write a “Push It” or a “Monster” why the hell can’t they throw em’ all together and make one killer disc, instead of giving me a couple of shining moments followed by second rate, b-side filler crap! I’ll say it again, I like Static-X and their live show is a blast, but I may be forced to just pay for the downloaded songs I want from now on or wait a few years for the “Best Of Static-X”. One last thing, Wayne Static has the coolest hairdo in rock and roll. —Warner Bros. 2003 [SPIKE FUQUA]

American soul music has its roots in Africa and now it is going full circle. Musicians in Europe, Brazil, Africa, and even Asia are putting their own stamp on R&B – singing in various languages and adding traditional instrumentation from their countries to the urban American form. Global Soul offers an eclectic mix of hip-hop, funk and soul that represents some of the world’s best grooves. France is an African melting pot and the best Afro-flavored music comes from there. Doc Gynéco boasts a suave, lascivious image, kind of like the Maxwell of Paris. China is a smooth, French vocalist who sings in both English and French and dazzles here with “Time.” Bands from Senegal, Tanzania and Cameroon demonstrate how African American music gets re-Africanized. Brazil’s African roots don’t get left out either. Fernanda Abreu and Aricia Mess show just how smooth and funky they get in Rio. —Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

MUSICIAN SERVICES
ARIES: By Tuesday morning the Aries moon will have you feeling your power. You’re ready for an exotic experience. Advanced subjects are easier to learn. Travel is best during this period. It’s time to give thanks for your friends and for freedom. TAURUS: It’s time for a deepening of experience and learning. Give thanks for the people that have helped you. No one makes it completely on his or her own. Everyone needs the help and support of others. You get luck from taking chances. GEMINI: This is when you come across as most lovable. It’s your time for going steady, getting engaged or getting married. New starts in relationships can safely be initiated. Sagittarius is the only sign that’s as funny as you. CANCER: Stamina and strength are your allies. Being rundown requires rest and recuperation. You can’t help everyone all the time. Some of your most desired relationships are coming to you. We let go to allow new energy to come in. LEO: Invoke the Disneyland within. Life is like a big amusement park, complete with good and bad attractions and distractions. Make it a point to give compliments out freely. Your smile will win the masses over. Your works are gifts. VIRGO: Enter into sacred space. You feel like you’re in a womb or a cocoon. Your nesting and homing instincts are strong. Growth and good fortune need to be shared with family. Your love life and creative abilities are about to get a “leg up”. LIBRA: It’s your turn to be the neighborhood prankster. Be a joker, a rascal and a pot stirrer. Enough with the niceness, it’s time for spiciness. Sisterly and brotherly friendships motivate the hijinks. I’d keep a journal over the next couple of weeks. SCORPIO: You’re making good business alliances. Social appearances are going to work in your favor. See yourself as fortifying and building. Look for that which sustains your values. Your creative works are worth more than you think. SAGITTARIUS: Pure birthday bliss will be yours. Act surprised. People like you. Receive their generosity graciously. Thanksgiving should be spent with bothers, sisters and close friends. The love you take is equal to the love you give. CAPRICORN: With beauty and intelligence on your side, you’re about to seize the day. But who wants to wake up and seize the day when you’re asleep having a nice dream? Find a way to create positive works in your community and with your partners. AQUARIUS: This time of year complements your personality. It’s social, freedom loving, and it allows you to cultivate unconventional relationships. Just be sure to realize that as you cultivate relationships you complicate your karma. Simple can be beautiful. PISCES: You need a healthy balance between romance, career and partnership needs. Socializing with friends and discussing the future is good for the soul. Share in other people’s joy rather than wallow in self-pity or in feeling left out. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Richard Pryor 12/1/40, Cathy Lee Crosby 12/2/49, Jimi Hendrix 11/27/42 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
The Big Bovine Blunder Our lovely friend Denby once hit a brown cow in her brand new VW Bug. How now, you ask? It was dark, she was driving down that curvy one-lane in Ulupalakua, and all of a sudden, there was a damn cow in the middle of the road. She swerved, the cow mooed but did not mooove quickly enough, and met briefly with a corner of the VW’s rear end before it scampered off into the countryside. Denby, slightly shaken, immediately called her sister. “I hit a cow,” she said. Apparently there is a hitting-the-cow protocol, as it is surprisingly quite common, and word spread to the police station faster than you can say gelatin. An officer soon arrived, looked around, then pointed out some suspicious earthy matter alongside Denby’s new bug, near where the VW met with the hapless cow. “You just knocked the shit out of it,” said the police officer. Thursday, BJ and I hit the Kaanapali Beach Hotel for a little Kupanaha Magic Dinner Show action. As we marveled at the “cutting-edge illusions” and loaded up on the “specialty” Mai Tai’s, BJ asked the age-old question that’s been haunting mankind for centuries. “Is it true that cherries get stuck in your anus for ten years when you eat them?” she asked. We couldn’t be sure, so we dove into the Piña Colada Cheesecake for solace. After a raucous band interview Friday night with the John Moore Project at the Stopwatch in Makawao that entailed several shots of tequila, I trotted off to Wailea at 7 a.m. to meet up with Katy and Lynn, then volunteer for Mike and Kevin from Mulligan’s in a big golf tournament. Let’s see, tequila at 2 a.m., golf five hours later… yeah, I might have still been drunk when I arrived. Maybe. Anyway, they wanted me to drive around the snack and beverage cart, which was fun and all, but passing out beers and getting my nose burnt to blisters was definitely my karmic punishment. I filled up on Powerade and potato chips, nonetheless. Later that evening, I ventured solo up to Casanova in Makawao to see the South American rock-pop LaMigra open for the very metal dark lords of Khrinj. LaMigra is this absolutely fabulous band from Argentina that wowed the crowd with their infectious enthusiasm. They kept the dance floor so consistently filled that it prompted Ian from Khrinj to note that it was “the first time anyone’s danced at one of our shows.” Marty Dread was there checking the scene on one of his rare nights off, as well as Kanoa from Gomega. Khrinj then pumped the crowd with their adrenaline infused wrath—i.e., they sounded great. As the crowd filtered away outside, and the beauteous Argentinian folk engaged in some rowdy but innocent behavior, Ignacio from LaMigra struck up singing some amazing authentic tango songs a cappella. He then told me that it’s his dream to open a restaurant where he can cook and sing for his diners. Heidi and I are so there. The next day, Amy, BJ and I went south to see Magic Carpet at Hapa’s. It was cool to see so many forms of belly dancing, including one interesting dance called Kathak, which Amy determined was the king of fake endings—meaning people kept clapping at pauses when they mistakenly thought the dance was over. The Indian music was also impressive and the Moroccan décor, inspiring. We still can’t quite get down that Mid-Eastern catcall, unfortunately. And just when I thought the weekend would come to a close, Vinnie called to inform me that Zero Tolerance was going to make a special appearance at a farewell gig for Joe, from Volt, at Erik’s Seafood in Lahaina. The young and heavy Entity rocked out, while BJ and I made pretty pictures of belly dancing costumes and this made-up character named “Sour Pussy” in crayon on our paper table covering. We took a toll of how many guys there were to girls—24 to 8, at last count—and how many times Jim from Deviltown said, “Okay, just one more song…”—four. After Zero Tolerance played, I said my goodnights and hit the pillow before I even got home. MTW
