LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR SO CLOSE HE CALLS HIM ‘DENNIS’ For decades we haven’t had a real people’s candidate for president, not since FDR and The New Deal. In this unique time of extreme idiotic leadership, a very special person has thrown in his hat. Dennis Kucinich, the congressperson of Ohio and recipient of the 2003 Gandhi Peace Award, is running for the democratic nomination for President (“Kucinich Needs Money,” Nov. 27). Dennis Kucinich has a platform that articulates practical alternatives for our country. Dennis supports: a single payer health care system; creative diplomacy as an alternative to unilateralist militarization; protecting social security as an alternative to neglect or privatization; increased spending for public education; fair trade and withdrawal from NAFTA and the WTO; protection of civil liberties and repeal of the Patriot Act; complete equality for gays and lesbians and a woman’s right to choose; clean energy alternatives; and restored rural communities. He is committed to closing the U.S. Army School of the Americas, plans to establish a Department of Peace and will remove U.S. troops from Iraq while holding officials accountable for their lies and deception. We need his honesty, vision, platform and practical policy suggestions. Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate who is addressing problems of corporate farming, energy and environment at their root levels rather than trying to patch up economic or environmental symptoms. His approach goes far beyond simple sustainability and speaks to a future of restoration of healthy land, community and a permanent solar based national energy system. If any Democrat has a history of attracting swing voters in winning elections against better-funded Republican opponents, it is Dennis Kucinich. He has repeatedly defeated entrenched incumbents. He beat a Republican incumbent for mayor in 1977, for state senator in 1994 (overcoming the national right-wing tide) and for Congress in 1996. He is an unabashed progressive who wins because swing voters who don’t agree with

him on every issue still see him as a fighter for their interests, as someone who will put the interests of workers and middle-class consumers ahead of big-money interests. No Democrat is better positioned in 2004 to attract ‘Reagan Democrats’ and swing voters with a frontal attack on how Bush policies hurt them and favor the rich. Don’t believe the spin doctors of the corporate elite who say, “he doesn’t have a chance.” We decide who has a chance, we are the people, we have the vote. If we get him nominated he will be positioned to bring in a whole new congress and change the world. -George Chyz, Paia

GUY IN MAUI WANTS TO SAY SOMETHING I’m a 25-year resident of Maui. I’ve lived on Maui for all those years. I’ve never lived in Maui. I might have lived in Maui County. But you folks, I’m going to count on for setting the record straight. You do not live in an island. You live on an island. You live in a city. For example, Maui Times [sic] cannot be in Lahaina and in Maui at the same time. So please set the record straight. We people are always saying “in Maui this,” “I live in Maui,” “being here in Maui.” You might be in Maui County but you’re on Maui. You can’t be in an island unless you’re buried in it or underground. So please, set the record straight. You’re on Maui. We live on Maui. Mahalos. -Dave Mulkey, Haiku, via voicemail

We’ve never seen you pay anyone back. What we have seen is you leave our table and go to the next table and pull the same shit. Then to top it off you say, “Hey can I borrow your cell phone?” and then you go and call your friends on the mainland for 30 to 60 minutes. And while all this is going on your daughter is being taken care of by your good-hearted mom. Then later into the night after you’re drunk and high you tell us how you can’t find a decent guy. What do you expect?! We all work hard and don’t mind helping, but this is getting real old real fast. It’s time to grow up and get a life! Please DO NOT come to our table anymore!

‘Never Trust The Occupier’ Confronting the militarization of Hawaii You know it’s going to be a great conference on Hawaiian rights and issues when one of the cameramen is wearing camouflage pants and a black shirt saying, “My heroes killed Captain Cook.” Such was the case at the Dec. 8 gathering at Maui Community College. Lasting all day, activists representing various Hawaiian organizations bashed the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as a useless tool of the U.S. Government, ripped the Akaka Bill offering partial sovereignty as a sell-out of the Hawaiian people, decried the movement to allow non-Hawaiians into the Kamehameha Schools, called for United Nations Observers to investigate what they called “the illegal annexation” of Hawaii and, near the end, attacked the “militarization of Hawaii.” The military’s role in Hawaii over the last century is well known. The only reason the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 was to destroy the U.S. Navy’s Pacific fleet. But despite the victory over Japan and the end of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the U.S. continues to control

huge swaths of Hawaiian territory—nearly a quarter of Oahu, according to one panelist. For a panel convened to argue against the militarization of the islands, their rhetoric was cold and aggressive. Panelists cursed the “unlawful occupation of Hawaii” and the 1898 “overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom.” “The military’s role is to put down the struggle of indigenous people wherever they may be,” said longtime peace activist Soli Niheu. “The U.S., with the most guns, is leading the charge. The world’s indigenous people are in deep kim chee. We have an obligation to confront the powers at be by any means necessary.” Niheu looked like someone’s kindly old grandfather, but he opened his talk by saying he’d been arrested for his activism 27 times. If anyone in the room had the credentials to quote Malcom X, it was him. Oahu bases like Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, Fort Shafter and Hickam Air Force Base take up lots of land. The Marines have done combat training on Kauai. The army’s wish to use tens of thousands of acres on the Big Island for combating training of the “Stryker Brigade” of lightly armored vehicles is gathering publicity

Marines storming the beach on Kauai and considered an all but done deal. But the green arm of the Pentagon even reaches Maui. There’s new telescope and astronomical station construction on Mauna Kea and Haleakala— all being done by big defense contractors. Not only are the volcanoes sensitive ecosystems, but panelist Kealoha Pisciotta said the Hawaiian people consider the mountain tops “temples.” “We have always been the gardeners of paradise,” said Pisciotta. “But paradise can be lost. When you take away the life force contained in the land, the people will die.” Then there’s the Navy running its nuclearpowered attack submarines up and down the channel between Maui and Lanai for shallow water training drills. According to panelist Isaac Harp, the Navy even has dozens of microphones on the seabed just off the Olowalu coast. Set up as a test station for anti-

submarine training, the microphones remain on the seafloor despite their installation permits running out years ago. “They said marine life was growing on them, so they couldn’t remove the microphones,” said Harp. “That was their excuse for not removing their trash.” Even the Navy’s returning Kaho’olawe, used for five decades as a gun range, presents problems. Much of the island still has unexploded munitions strewn about. “We should not accept Kaho’olawe until it’s 100 percent cleaned up,” said Niheu. Exactly what to do about Kaho’olawe, the Navy and the whole concept of a militarized Hawaii is a good question. As it stands now, it’s a simple power equation: the U.S. has the power, so it does as it pleases. At least Niheu knows what not to do. “Never trust the occupier,” he said. MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, DEC. 1 County Council meets tonight to discuss the big push to ban roosters, geese and peacocks from residential areas. I can’t make it tonight, but I’ll just read about it in tomorrow’s Maui News… About the only thing scarier than that Discovery Channel special on Mega-Tsunamis— you know, the 100 kilometer-long, 500meter high monsters created when, like, half a volcanic island decides to break off and slide into the ocean all of a sudden—is opening up the Sunday Maui News and finding this shocking, shocking Associated Press story buried on Page A4: “Officials confirm bug as black widow spider.” Okay, people, stay calm. Seems a woman found a spider in “a bunch of grapes” and did what any sane person would do in a similar situation: she called the government. According to the lucky AP stringer who got to call vector control and ask about this scoop of the century, “State entomologist George Kitaguchi said black widows are common in Hawaii.” Wow. A regular woman found a regular spider in a regular bunch of grapes. What’s next, a story saying the famed but elusive “Olinda Big Cat” probably doesn’t exist?… The famed but elusive “Olinda Big Cat” probably doesn’t exist, says yesterday’s edition of the Honolulu Advertiser. “The legend of a big cat has been circulating on Maui for 15 years or so, [32-year old Olinda resident and skeptic Glenn Coryell] said” to Advertiser reporter Timothy Hurley. “In recent years,” added Hurley, “the cat has been reported in Makena, in Haiku. When the Olinda cat hit the news, sightings were reported all over the island. ‘He’s been everywhere. He even goes on vacation with Bigfoot,’ Coryell said.” Thank you. In a scary but

delightful coincidence, while cleaning out my old newspaper stacks I found the Sept. 18 issue of the Maui Weekly—by far the most sensationalist paper pushing the Big Cat story. It’s top story? “CAPTURE NEARS FOR BIG CAT.”

TUESDAY, DEC. 2 On a day when yet another American soldier is killed in Iraq, the Pentagon calls up 390 reservists of the locally based 411th Engineer Battalion. Just one guess on where they’re going. They’re part of 8,000 Hawaii-based soldiers already heading to Iraq. Of this latest contingent, 130 hail from Maui. The unit saw action in World War II but somehow managed to sit out Korea, Vietnam, that day we invaded the Dominican Republic, the Grenada take-over, that time we busted up Panama, the couple of times we bombed Libya, the first Gulf War, Somalia, peace-keeping in Bosnia, the Kosovo war and when we invaded Afghanistan. So much for 60 years of peace… By the way, the Maui News doesn’t have anything on last night’s big County Council rooster meeting. The front page has two stories on the rain—it rains in Hawaii? I’m shocked!—and a South Florida Sentinel piece on people trying to recreate the Wright Brothers’ first flight in, um, South Florida, but nothing on what the council decided on the great poultry question. What am I to do? Where will I get all my chicken news? Well?! Great—now I’m all hungry. Thanks a lot, Maui News!

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 3 At least, my long-awaited Maui News chicken report! Mmmm… let me savor all its chickeny goodness. For three hours during Monday’s County Council meeting, 60plus residents talked all aspects of rooster politics, forcing the Maui News to use one poultry reference after another. “Proposed rooster ban has public squawking,” read this morning’s above-the-fold headline. In addition, News

stupid president. “We have a lot of issues that he is aware of,” said Lingle at a big GOP gathering in Honolulu. Really? Until a special briefing a year ago, Bush wasn’t aware there was more than one kind of Muslim. Oh, but wait, I’m not being fair. Lingle said Bush has promised to give the state $50 million for homeland security? What a humanitarian. We can’t even root out the legions of tiny coqui frogs out of our rain forests, but now we have $50 million American to keep the godless terrorists out of our art galleries and ABC Stores… Somebody alert the Pulitzer Committee, the Maui Weekly just broke a big, big story. Turns out that some old guy’s copy of the Honolulu Advertiser printed with the date Dec. 7, 1941, the headline “Japanese Bomb Pearl Harbor!” and the words “Souvenir Edition” in the upper left hand corner is not, in fact, an actual newspaper from 1941, but is just a, well, souvenir edition printed 50 years later.

FRIDAY, DEC. 5

reporter Valerie Monson wrote that the issue “has ruffled feathers all over the county.” Well, people, I hope you’re happy. Oh, and Councilman Robert Carroll, who started this deal in the first place, waxed nostalgic for the Eisenhower Administration. “The problem has arisen because people won’t listen to each other,” he said. “If it was like it was in the ‘50s when I was growing up, we wouldn’t be here tonight.” Ahhh, the 1950s. What a magical time. The U.S. and Soviets threatened to nuke each other nearly every day, Lawrence Welk ruled the airwaves and black people couldn’t use white people’s restrooms. No, I don’t think people in the 1950s spent their time arguing about roosters.

THURSDAY, DEC. 4 Why is it that President George W. Bush seems to dumb down everyone he comes in contact with? I mean, look at Governor Linda Lingle and the stupid praise she heaped on our

Got up this morning, stretched, had a little breakfast, then realized that I hate you all. No really. It comes from the heart, so it’s okay. I mean, can’t we all agree that we’re getting enough sugary sweetness in our diet as it is? Is it really necessary that those Chicken Soup for the Soul madcaps publish yet another book? You’d think 80 million copies of 70 titles printed in 35 languages would be enough, but nope. Now we have Chicken Soup for the Ocean Lover’s Soul. And, since we have an ocean here, it only makes sense that a couple of Kihei people have their stories included. And, amazingly enough, both involve swimming with animals. The first is Jennifer Anderson’s “exciting first hand physical and emotional encounter with a 15-foot graceful manta ray.” Manta Ray? Wasn’t he, like, a famous photographer? Oh wait, that was Man Ray. Anyway, the other “touching story” comes from local columnist Eve EschnerHogan. Her tale—cue bass line for this one— “recounts an experience with a pod of dolphins where the line between animals and humanity becomes blurred.” Man, that is soooooo hot. I know they say the sea is a harsh mistress, but awwwww yeaaaaahhhh. Much less hot is Eschner-Hogan’s other story about a sea captain’s “choice over the treatment of an innocent octopus.” MTW

HE’S THE ‘CON’ IN ‘CON LAW’

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS

Michael Nelson opened a law firm in an Orlando, Fla., suburb recently (plush leased office space, a Mercedes company car, a letterhead listing law partners) and began soliciting business from drug convicts’ families, offering to negotiate reduced sentences for their kin. However, an investigation by WKMG-TV revealed in November not only that Nelson and his “partners” are not lawyers but also that Nelson “practices” only during the day because he returns to a halfway house every night to finish a fiveyear bank-fraud sentence. (The station also found that business was good, with “hundreds of thousands of dollars… received or solicited.”) Amazed at the station’s findings, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons revoked Nelson’s halfway-house privilege and began its own investigation.

“News of the Weird” has reported several times on police officer wannabes who don uniforms and perform freelance traffic stops (usually limiting their work to merely lecturing the motorists). However, faced with recalcitrant drivers, police imposters Jeremy Lepianka, 22, in Syracuse, N.Y., in September, and Donald Sebastian, 54, in Cleveland, Ohio, in November, took an extra, bold step: They actually called headquarters for backup. In both cases, the incidents eventually led to the imposters’ arrests. (Asked for an explanation for his obsession, Sebastian said it was just his way of giving back to the community.)

INEXPLICABLE In September, the Manitoba government announced it was ordering 40,000 condoms for prisoners in its 10 jails and specified that they be of “assorted flavors” of “strawberry, banana and vanilla.”

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE In an October report, the federal government’s General Accounting Office revealed that the Pentagon has been lax in monitoring just who was buying its surplus chemical and biological equipment and that such items could easily have found their way to terrorists (and been bought at deep discounts). On the other hand, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency admitted in September that it had been Internet-monitoring a Web cam of a factory on Scotland’s Isle of Islay that it said resembled a chemical weapons lab but which turned out to be a whiskey distillery.

A familiar “News of the Weird” character, the indefatigable gay-hating Rev. Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kan., announced in October that he would take advantage of the Casper, Wyo., City Council’s earlier decision to allow a religious monument (the Ten Commandments) in a city park by erecting his own religious monument: a statue celebrating the 1998 fatal gay bashing (and descent into hell) of Casper’s Matthew Shepard. The City Council subsequently decided that its Ten Commandments monument was a bad idea and voted to remove it and ban all religious messages from the park.

NOT A GOOD SIGN During filming in a remote area of Italy earlier this year for the controversial Mel Gibson film The Passion of Christ, the actor who portrays Jesus was struck during a lightning storm, according to an October report in the trade paper Variety. Also struck was assistant director Jan Michelini, who had been struck by lightning at a previous shoot for the film, in Matera, Italy. None of the strikes created a serious injury. The film’s portrayals of Christ and of Jews are expected to make it extremely controversial.

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Makena Weekly Will the Maui Weekly ever give us the whole story? Everett Dowling does many things. He’s a wealthy land developer. He runs the Dowling Co., a Wailuku based real estate consulting business. He’s a member of the Maui Country Club and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Since May he’s owned half of the Maui Weekly. And for the last couple of years, he’s been mulling over buying a stake in the enormous Makena Resort project, should the Maui County Council ever approve it. “I’m interested in a couple parcels,” said Dowling. “Makena’s been a master planned community for 25 years. They did a good job landscaping and maintaining a high level of quality. When they complete rezoning we’ll take a look.” Given that Dowling will likely invest in Makena, it’s likely he will make a ton of money off the project. Common journalistic ethics make it a no-brainer that the Maui Weekly discloses their part owner’s financial interest in Makena before writing about the project. They better start quick. The Nov. 20 issue of the Weekly contains a big frontpage puff piece on how great the Makena project will be and it doesn’t contain a word about Dowling’s—and by extension, the Maui Weekly’s—financial interest in the project getting approved. The conflict here is obvious. There’s nothing wrong with a newspaper taking an ideological stance on an issue, but doing so without properly disclosing financial interests risks getting tagged with a loose ethics reputation. In the early days of the 2oth Century, the mighty Los Angeles Times did exactly that, strenuously advocating development of the Owens Valley as a water source while never disclosing that Times publisher Gen. Harrison Otis stood to get very rich off developing the San Fernando Valley—a project that simply wasn’t possible without Owens Valley water. Like the San Fernando Valley, Makena is the biggest, most controversial proposed development to come down the pipe in decades. The proposed development is immense—nothing less than a Waileasized community of golf courses and shops and 1,500 housing and hotel units looming over Makena’s beautiful, naturally pristine Big Beach. Such a project will not only choke South Maui roads with even more traffic but would further deplete fresh water sources. As George Cooper and Gavan Daws pointed out in their 1985 book Land and Power in Hawaii, Makena is “the last substantially undeveloped stretch of the entire Kihei coast.” It’s been under threat of development since 1973, when the big

Japanese firm Seibu Group Enterprises bought the whole area. Of course, the Weekly’s treatment of the Makena plan left exactly the opposite impression. “Makena Resort Readies Plans For Low Density Timeshare Units,” read the story’s headline. “Instead of a 500-room hotel, Makena Resort proposes smaller 89-unit timeshare next to Maui Prince Hotel. Plans also call for Pi’ilani Highway expansion,” read the deck. Throughout the story, contributing writer Joseph W. Bean’s use of nearly impenetrable jargon like “HM-zoned land” and “in-place infrastructure” all but dares the reader to move from one sentence to the next. But there are some portions that make clear Maui Weekly’s view that everything would be better on Maui if the county council approved the project. “To be clear: It is a change from 500 hotel

COMMON JOURNALISTIC ETHICS MAKE IT A NOBRAINER THAT THE MAUI WEEKLY DISCLOSES THEIR PART OWNER’S FINANCIAL INTEREST IN MAKENA BEFORE WRITING ABOUT THE PROJECT. rooms on 11 acres to 89 time-shares on 36 acres,” wrote Bean. “If Maui is going to have development—and it is—this sounds like a project that might sail through the permitting process with ease.” In fact, Bean’s emphasis on shifting hotel rooms here for time-share condos there simply shows how the project more and more resembles a back alley shell game. The larger issue, that Makena will be a massive resort when completed in 20 years, hasn’t changed. More basic, Bean’s story simply assumes the best use of Makena and Big Beach is as a large-scale Wailea-type resort and that county councilmembers like Wayne Nishiki—who’s spent the better part of two decades battling Makena development—are out of touch. In fact, many, many people would like Makena to stay as it is. Two years ago, hundreds lined Pi’ilani Highway in Kihei and showed at a public hearing at the Kihei Community Center to protest the Makena development plans, then under consideration by the county council’s Land Use Committee. The notoriously pro-development State Land Use Commission signed off on Makena way back in 1995, but the county council won’t act on the project until February, 2004. It will be very interesting to see what the Maui Weekly says—and doesn’t say—when that happens. MTW

Maui Adventure Race For those who think triathlons wimpy

PHOTOS: WWW.TROPICALLIGHT.COM

Rock on! For most people, riding a bike from Ulupalakua to Hana would be enough to exhaust them. As would hiking all of “The King’s Trail.” Or paddling an outrigger to Molokini and back. Now imagine doing all of these things and a few more as a part of a race. A race that lasts days, not hours. They call it the Maui Adventure Race, and it lasted from Dec. 5 to 7. Twenty-two teams registered for the race. The teams could be either two person or four. Four-person teams had to have at least one member of the opposite sex. The racers came from a cross section of society—personal trainers, business people, police officers, fire fighters, Navy SEALs and camp counselors. They all decided a mere triathlon was simply not enough of a challenge.

The winning teams finished by 7 p.m. on Saturday. But teams could continue to race until 4 p.m. on Sunday. In the end, it was mainland pros Team Epinephrine/SOLE custom footbeds who would cross the finish line first. The race began under the moonlit sky at the Maui Prince, barely 4 a.m., with the teams wearing packs containing mountaineering gear, life jackets, survival equipment and one two-plus pound global positioning unit that would record their progress during the race. Their first task: a run through Wailea and up to the Kihei Canoe Club. Once at the canoe club, they jumped in outrigger canoes and paddled out to Molokini. After picking up markers from beneath the waves water, they returned to the canoe club. Luckily Kanaloa was keeping watch over everyone, and the wind and waves of earlier in the week held off, allowing for a smooth paddle. After getting back to the canoe club, racers grabbed their bikes and were off on a ride that would circle East Maui. After cutting up through Ulupalakua Ranch, they pedaled down and around the bottom of the island, dodging cars, potholes, rocks and even cattle. The cows seemed to be especially troublesome after dark, with one team forced to walk their bikes through the midst of a herd that had taken up grazing along the sides of the road. Another team nearly collided with a cow in the darkness. As it’s wont to do, plenty of rain fell on the ride near Hana. Fast flowing water made a checkpoint located at the base Alalele Falls unreachable for a time. The rain washed debris and rocks onto the road, as well just adding to everyone’s misery. After Hana, it was up to another checkppoint at Twin Falls. From there, teams began a climb, which took them up through Makawao, Pukalani and Kula. Eventually they were all the way up above Poli Poli Springs, at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Race officials prevented slower teams from making the climb, but those teams that made it to the top had to abandon their bikes, then start down on foot along the edge of Manawainui Gulch. Along the way they had to stop and find a Hawaiian wilderness restoration project crew, then help plant a native seedling—one for each team member. Then it was back to the edge of the gulch to rappel down several hundred feet

Rock on! into the gulch. There they followed the gulch down to the shore, climbed a series of fixed ropes, then hiked “The King’s Trail.” The hike took the four-person Maui team from Valley Isle Road Runners 17 hours. They ended up a solid fourth place overall, the top team from all of Hawaii. Other weren’t so lucky. One got lost in a lava flow, collapsed from dehydration and had to be rescued by helicopter.

“Off the beaten tourist path, The Sly Mongoose is the seediest dive bar in town, and one of the friendliest. The bartender will know your name and half your life history inside of 10 minutes, and she makes the strongest Mai Tai on the island.” –Fodors Travel Guide

Sunday, 10:45 a.m. Four guys are sitting at the bar, drinking Bud in a can and watching the football game on television. A regular comes in with breakfast—eggs and bacon—for Donna, bar manager and sometime “Mama” of the Sly Mongoose. The five men begin talking and joking with each other easily, as Donna pours their usual drinks and slips a Patsy Cline CD into the stereo. “This one’s for you,” she says, smiling at her breakfast bearer. He beams. “Now that’s a lady,” he says. Everyone nods. The first time I stepped through the partially covered door of the World Famous Sly Mongoose, tucked way back in the industrial area of Lahaina, I was nervous. Not because of any preconceived notions I had about the notorious dive bar’s seedy past or shady characters. Not because I was new to the island and wouldn’t know anybody in this obviously closely-knit neighborhood tavern. Not because I was a single chick in my mid-twenties about to surrounded by burly fishermen, workingclass folk and seasoned drinkers. I was nervous because I was on a first date. And not just with one guy, but with two. It’s a long story, but the point is, I was too distracted by my own romantic dilemma to be concerned with any potential dangers that the Sly Mongoose might have posed at the time. I attempted to order a “microbrew” and got laughed at, engaged in conversation with my dates and within ten minutes of us arriving, witnessed my very first honest-to-goodness bar brawl. Apparently, a local mahu became offended by the bartender’s tone and slapped him, immediately inciting the other regulars in the bar to throw punches and chairs and anything not already bolted down in the already cramped space. What I remember most is lots of wood, blood and fists flying as I backed up against the wall in shock and dismay. There were also a couple of bodies on the floor, one of which was one of my dates. Of course, that chaotic and violent night ended in love: My growing fondness for the Sly Mongoose proved to be more lasting than the relationships that began on that fateful evening. Needless to say, the Sly Mongoose lives on— through fire, deaths, fights and periodic bouts of sobriety—like a mythical and beloved, postapocalyptic, pet cockroach.

11:45 a.m. A stunning, gorgeous blonde walks into the bar with four big local guys. She orders a split of Champagne, they cans of beer, then asks Donna how the bar did yesterday. They sit at one of the cocktail tables in back. This is Hana, the current owner of the Sly Mongoose… The bar is about 30 years old. Layers of photos cover the walls adjacent to the door, depicting the large family of regular customers and bartenders, owners past and present, and various spouses, exes and pets. When the Sly Mongoose accountant’s dog Pinto, whose photo is prominent along the wall before the men’s

room, passed away, Doug Shoe had his dog’s ashes sprinkled into the plant outside the door of the bar and attached the sign “Pinto’s Planter.” There are about a dozen padded stools along the bar, with two cocktail tables against the wall and one smaller table where a recently purchased and somewhat neglected video game rests. The cigarette machine that once flanked the inner wall of the doorway is now gone, as is Cigarette Bill, beloved regular and one-time smoke supplier. Along with the endless array of snapshots, there are a series of signs that begin with the moniker “Blackie Says” and end with sayings like “Aloha is a two-way street,” “Everybody should believe in something—I believe I’ll have another drink” and “The customer is always right—but we throw him out anyway.” A fancy glass plaque, highly visible behind the bar alongside the World Famous Sly Mongoose mirror, reads, “If you are grouchy, irritable, or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge for putting up with you.” Sometimes, one of the bartenders will bring in chili and rice, hot dogs or turkey soup for their customers. On one particular day Donna was working, she brought in two large pans of green chili enchiladas she had made that morning for everyone at the bar to enjoy. “I love to feed my friends,” she said. Music is a vital part of any bar, and in this case, is as eclectic and familiar as the people who inhabit the Sly Mongoose. Generally, bartenders tune in to the classic rock station on the DMX, or bring in their favorite CDs. Sing-a-longs are common and on nights that the youngest bartender Jen is working, expect a one-woman dance performance, too.

12:45 p.m. The guys, all median-age 50-something, are still arguing over the game. They’ve also taken to playing with the pretzels Donna had just placed about the bar. She cracks open another couple of cans for them as James Taylor’s “You’ve Got A Friend” sparks everyone to sing along with the

chorus… “You just call out my name, and you know, wherever I am…” One slow night about nine years ago, while bartender “Big Deb” was working, a guy wearing a ski mask walked into the Sly Mongoose and held a gun to the head of “Chuck”—a regular who was busy watching a football game on the bar’s television. “Give me all your money,” the robber said to Deb. As Deb headed to the register, old-time regulars Roscoe and Uncle Wilson, who were the only other customers sitting at the bar that day, started laughing. “Boy, you picked the wrong time to rob this place!” they told the young criminal. “We’re all running tabs—there’s no money here.” “Yeah, go ahead and shoot him,” one of them said, laughing harder, noting that Chuck was still nonchalantly glued to the TV set. “He won’t notice.” Roscoe and Uncle Wilson continued laughing hysterically at the poor thief. “Sit down and order a drink,” they said. “We’ll put it on our tab!” Humiliated and confused, the intruder ran out into his getaway car and was captured at the Shell gas station down the street after Deb called the incident in to the police. For years after that, she held an annual celebration at the Goose on the same date they affectionately called, “The Night We Almost Got Robbed.”

1:45 p.m. Electric Steve walks in. Everyone discusses his birthday party held at the Goose the day before. As per his usual M.O., he got drunk and rather lewd with some of the female customers. Obviously embarrassed by his behavior, Steve is somewhat somber. “Do me a favor,” he says, “next time you see me heading for the mic, tackle me or something…” Three years ago, a fire broke out at the ukulele store by the Sly Mongoose. The flames quickly spread throughout the building, as did word of the disaster. The bartenders and owner at the time, John Rawlings, were powerless to do anything but watch the smoke billowing out from the windows upstairs. Later, after the smoke cleared, John and his staff assessed the damage. While the other shops in the building were destroyed, the bar suffered mostly water and smoke damage. Ironically, John had just bought the place and signed the papers that very day. If the damage was irreparable, John would lose everything and his loyal staff would be out of work. They all wondered what to do next. The fire marshal would be back the next day to determine if the World Famous Sly Mongoose would be shut down for good. Before they could cry into their beers, Walter Hester, who owns Maui Jim sunglasses, came down with a generator, others set up shop vacs and all of the bar regulars—young and old, men and women—came down with buckets and soap and proceeded to wipe down and clean up every spare inch of the Goose. Everyone came together and did such a great job, that the next day the fire marshal could see no reason why the tiny bar should close. That evening, the Sly Mongoose opened for business as usual. All through the night, John rang the bell and people cheered, relieved to be able to hold on to their favorite watering hole.

2:45 p.m. A sprightly, older gentlemen with glasses and a good-natured smirk steps in with some friends. Before any of them say a word, Donna prepares their drinks as they file up around the cocktail tables, now deserted by Hana and her entourage… On one occasion, somebody I was sitting next to noted that everyone at the bar had facial hair— goatees, mustaches and beards—in varying degrees of gray. “Even the women!” he said. On another, youthful 83-year-old Sly Mongoose regular Henry came in. Every morning at dawn, he drives up to Kapalua and walks down the steep slope of Pineapple Hill. He insists this is the secret to his vibrant longevity. “That and tequila!” he says.

3:45 p.m. Two men in their late-30’s, disheveled and redfaced, swagger up to the bar. Donna shakes her head at them and says, firmly, “Nope, I’m not serving you guys—but have a nice day.” They look confused for a moment then, sheepishly, they walk out… Back in the days when it was more common, a fight broke out at the Sly Mongoose. As inevitably happened, a guy got knocked out, tooth and all, and the patrons drew a chalk outline of him and his tooth outside on the driveway. For months, there was erroneous talk in the town of a “murder at the Mongoose.” “That was back when we were a sleazy dive,” said Dave, another longtime Goose bartender, laughing. “You know, about a week ago.” Several years ago, Donna used to work at another bar in town called Tiger’s. On one occasion while working there, a man, who was well known in Lahaina, inappropriately reached under her skirt. Feeling violated, she told Rambo Rick, a respected veteran and regular of the Sly Mongoose, who then took the guy outside and duct-taped him to a tree. When the man’s wife called the Goose looking for him, the bartender unwittingly said he wasn’t there. The wife didn’t believe the bartender and drove by the bar, then noticed her husband tied to the tree out front. She proceeded to remove the tape from his mouth to find out what happened, but he just started yelling at her, so she taped him back up, went into the Goose and had a cocktail. Another time more recently, I was at the Goose, enjoying my drink and feeling rather at ease amongst the more veteran dive bar ohana. One of the regulars I had seen often was an important town official. After fifteen shots and a couple of beers, he drunkenly got off his stool and gave me a gentle squeeze. “You’re gorgeous,” he said. “Wow, thanks,” I said, kind of pleased at my newfound acceptance. “Thanks a lot!” “Yeah,” he went on. “You may not be the most beautiful woman, but I think you’re gorgeous.”

Pork Shank & Cher’s Pants Memorabilia and munchies at the Hard Rock Café

PHOTO: RUDI KING

You gotta admit, dining at the Hard Rock is like attending a dinner show in Vegas. Except, instead of bejeweled showgirls, you have servers in black dresses and colorful pins. Performances by Wayne Newton and Robert Goulet have been replaced with the karaoke version of Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever” by the guy sitting next to you at the bar. The coolest thing about the menu is that it comes equipped with glossy, color photos of key apps, entrees, desserts and cocktails, which makes it a lot easier to make a decision. On the other hand, the sneaky side effect is that you may find yourself ordering food when you’re not even really hungry. With a motto like “Love All—Serve All,” the Hard Rock really tries to appeal to everyone with menu items that range from comfort foods like potato skins and chicken tenders to more exotic delights like “Osso Bucco” and Dessert Nachos. Standouts for me include the Jumbo Combo appetizer, a ridiculously large sampler of Santa Fe Spring Rolls, Chicken Wings, Onion Rings, Tupelo

Chicken Tenders and Potato Skins, with four sauces to accompany them. Also, HRC’s burgers are made with 100 percent Maui beef—I highly recommend the Hickory Bar-B-Que Bacon Cheeseburger for some serious coronary fright and damn good eatin’. They also feature some healthier choices, like the HRC Haystack Chicken and the Grilled Chinese Chicken Salad, some pasta dishes, such as the Grilled Shrimp Fettuccine Parmesan, classic sandwiches like the Stacked Roast Beef and the Turkey BLT, and signature items like Bruce’s Famous Bar-B-Que Ribs and the Pig Sandwich. The desserts are a little scary—in the most pleasant way. Even for me. Portions are monstrous. The HRC Hot Fudge Brownie sundae and the Down Home Apple Cobbler are so scrumptiously rich that you may eat yourself into a sugar-induced seizure and slide right out of your hard rockin’ chair onto the hard rockin’ floor. Whether you go with a friend, a lover or someone questionable, the Hard Rock Café tends to take away any discomfort you may feel. If you’re with someone you don’t like, the music is loud enough and the videos interesting enough to distract you. And there’s so

One of them ridiculously large samplers much to look at—check out the cool, custom woodie ‘59 Cadillac car-boat above the bar! Take a walk around and check out the tiny pants Cher got into and the dirty white dress Britney wore. Are all pop stars really only five feet tall? The Hard Rock Café is a chain theme restaurant in a prime spot on Front Street, but locals flock here and converse freely with the many visitors loaded up with bags of t-shirts, caps and souvenir glasses from the merchandise shop. All the bartenders have been here for years and are like family to the regulars and residents of Lahaina.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY SARAH CALLENDER

Breaking Records One day during the early 1970s, in a male-themed bedroom of a modest house in Cleveland, a skinny four-year-old boy perched at a drum set, playing furiously. He eschewed all other toys to repeatedly pummel the instrument, making his parents second-guess their idea of a gift. His little hands gripped the drumsticks—tighter than they gripped his parents’ hands when crossing the street. Sweat stuck his soft blonde hair to his forehead in vertical stripes and his Superman pajama top clung wetly to his back. He played so hard that one leadfooted stomp sent the foot pedal clear through the kick drum’s skin. DJ Swamp was born. December 2003 finds the self-described “KISS on the turntables” in his Hollywood home, resting his bones after a 10-show tour in the UK. On the road since September, Swamp (a name lovingly bestowed by his mother) next performs in Utah, Washington, Illinois and Massachusetts after next Friday’s stint at Casanova in Makawao. He’s considering a tour with Pharside in March. He is known for breaking records and using them to scratch, breathing fire, chewing on phonograph needles and cutting himself with vinyl while onstage. And his innovations extend well beyond the performance. Swamp has created volumes of breakbeat albums and a Skip Proof Scratch Tool which he sells on his website. On recent projects he rhymes. “You’ve gotta try something new all the time,” he said. “I still have a lot of other ideas.” Being different has also meant collaborating on a sundry of projects. Swamp has worked with artists that seem inherently at odds with each other: little-boy wonders Hansen, rapper Cool Keith, the

Crystal Method, Better Than Ezra, Morcheeba, DEVO, Kid Rock and the Beastie Boys are some. He values their range. “You can learn a lot from others,” he said. “You want to find out [what they are like]. I’ll do that with just about anyone.” Less than 10 years ago, the lanky, long black-haired DJ who looks like a metalhead and speaks with a distinct b-boy flava was

sweeping the streets of Cleveland, creating mixes, scratching and performing at local clubs. In 1996, he entered the DMC National DJ Championships on a whim and promptly won himself first prize. Swamp met the indie-rock prodigy vary. Some say Beck saw him perform on television and contacted him soon afterward. Others say Swamp pretended to be a reporter interviewing Beck, then slipped him his demo tape. (Swamp says all of the above are true.) An equally tenacious high school age Swamp offered his mixing and producing services to local rap groups and college radio stations. At 19, he competed against 500 other people and won a part breakdancing in a performance with the Cleveland Ballet. “I was always listening to music,” he said. “It got me high.” Swamp’s willingness to experiment with and exploit every available musical opportunity gave his own mixes their “uncategorizable style.” Though he professes his long love for hip hop, “I have many styles,” he said. “People are always trying to put me in a box. I can’t really be compared to anything. I’m looking at all the other stuff and trying to do something different.” Different for Swamp has meant having total creative control of his music and his shows. He mixes using vinyl and laptop simultaneously, creates his own visual effects, and subscribes wholeheartedly to the MTV School of Shock. Ironically, Swamp is critical of the mainstream radio music he helps generate. “I’m a fan of it all and I hate it all at the same time,” he said. “99 percent of everything out there right now is lame.” Luckily he knows that by creating this type of music, he is able to create his own. In the past, he said, “I have been in so many situations where people were telling me what to do. Now that I have the [financial] opportunity, I’m gonna do it.” DJ Swamp appears Friday, Dec. 12 at Casanova, 1188 Makawao Ave., 9:45 p.m., 21+, call 572-0220. MTW

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Body And Soul Alejandro Inarritu Delivers Life Inarritu worked with his screenwriting partner from Amores Perros to write 21 Grams with Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts in mind for the story’s deteriorating characters. Sean Penn is in top form as Paul Rivers a college professor awaiting a heart transplant while his wife Mary (Charlotte Gainsbourg) tries to become pregnant through artificial insemination before her husband succumbs. Christina Peck (Naomi Watts) is a loving wife and mother of two little girls when a hit and run accident extracts her family from her grasp. Benicio Del Toro is Jack Jordan, an ex-con who has replaced his lawless tendencies with religious faith to protect himself and his family.

21 Grams

★★★★★ We experience the characters as essential members of families whose unseen orbits pull together when Jack Jordan accidentally runs down Christina’s family with his pick-up truck while on his way home to a small celebration with his family and friends. Jack has recently been fired from his job at a country club for his tattoos, which symbolically include a heart that decorates his neck. Jack is the most morally empathetic character in the film because he has fallen the farthest and yet strives with every nerve in his body to maintain his sobriety and sanity in the face of the gloom and temptation that surrounds him. The death of Christina’s husband Michael (Danny Huston) provides Paul (Penn) with the very heart that is transplanted into his chest and allows him to go on living. Paul becomes the emotional catalyst of the story because he refuses to accept the concealment of his donor’s

Sean Penn as “Paul Rivers” identity and takes it upon himself to hire a private detective to disclose the source of his lifesaving heart. Paul’s burden is curiosity, while Christina’s hardship is the loss of her family. But it’s from Jack’s sense of guilt and responsibility that the story reveals its thematic soul and transcends Paul’s inquisitiveness and Christina’s sense of revenge. The striking look of 21 Grams comes from cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, who gave similar grit and saturated color to Amores Perros. Prieto again uses a hand-held camera to interact with the story as a coordinated invisible member of the onscreen action. The

realism and percolating thematic bubbles that pop from the unfolding narrative puzzle come directly from Prieto’s balanced visual sensibilities. But the rawness of Inarritu’s film comes from the passionate milieu that the film’s ensemble connects with. The vibe is closest to the one that writer/director Joe Carnahan presented with his recent tour de force Narc. The disjointed plotting of 21 Grams is the film’s most polished device and wraps the story in circling layers that are then punctured by the slipping intentions of its characters. Some critics have complained about the bravura narrative splicing of 21 Grams as

being “difficult to follow.” But they miss the validity of the tact’s overall effect because they are so concerned with “following” the story. This is a daring movie that deals with loss of family, pride, dignity, faith, and ultimately, a person’s very soul. The value of a human life is an inestimable quantity that can only be inferred by the way that people treat one another. 21 Grams commands a running discourse that runs as a constant thematic thread through all of humanity. The movie delivers life as a floating mysterious entity that we all share. It’s very few films that achieve anything remotely close. Rated R - 125 mins. MTW

Sumo Wrestling, Commandos

Fri, 11 a.m., Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului From Bento to Mixed Plate is an artistic examination of the Japanese experience in Hawaii. The first Japanese arrived in Hawaii in 1868, with each succeeding generation adding something new to island culture. The exhibit runs through all the usual influences—sumo wrestling, the decorated all-Japanese 442nd Regimental Combat Team from World War II and, of course, the evolution of the two-scoop-rice-one-scoop-mac-salad mixed plate lunch. The whole deal debuted in the Bishop Museum nearly 12 years ago, and has traveled the world. The exhibit runs nine weeks, so there’s plenty of time to see it. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

That Whale Song Band Slug on Rhymes, Friday, 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater in Kahului Ant on Beats Hiroshima is coming to Maui. Of course, I’m talking about the band and not the quaint Japanese city we atomized in the last days of the Great World War II. The official MACC press release says the band “has seamlessly blended Asian and North American music cultures” with “a unique combination of distinctively Japanese elements with funky pop and urban jazz sensibilities.” Now I’ve heard Hiroshima, and I can say with absolute certainty that they are way more about the funky pop than the urban jazz sensibilities. True, I’ve only heard one Hiroshima song in my life, and it was the whale theme from that Star Trek movie where they all go to San Francisco, but I don’t see how that has any relevance here. ARIES: Changes both subtle and major will come about this week. On the upside Mars moves into Aries early Tuesday morning. The weekend promises to be fun. Yet, you need to keep your ground and get down to business. You are driven once again. TAURUS: Spend as much time out in nature as your schedule allows you. Your luck remains good. Your sense of adventure will take you everywhere. While you’re out tripping, be ready for anything. Crazy weather is more likely to creep up on you. GEMINI: You can lighten up a bit at work. But before you do, take care of all your communication by Monday or Tuesday. Mercury retrograde begins Wednesday the 17th at 6:01 a.m. Maui time. Otherwise bask in your intensity as the fires of change motivate you. CANCER: It’s time to be focused. Coordinate your moves with the moons. This week you’re in a finishing and completing stage. Tie up loose ends. Relax into your love life. Be more assertive as to your long-range career goals. LEO: You’ve been a big help to us all. I’d suggest other signed would be wise to follow your lead. Friday through Sunday morning you’ll dazzle us in the light of the Leo moon. Be careful not to over extend yourself. Your heart is open and you feel charitable. VIRGO: Staying at home can be a statement of peace as well as ecological sanity. Having a little down time can be good for the soul. Pay attention to lovers, children and where your creativity is headed. May your thoughts be poised like a butterfly on a flower. LIBRA: You will be invited to a cosmic gathering of eclectic souls. This may include waiting at a bus stop, being in line at a grocery store, or being with family. Angels often disguise themselves as homeless, fat or ugly. Look deep for soul beauty. SCORPIO: Getting your message out early will be to your benefit. Communications are best dealt with before Wednesday. Learn to be a good investor as well as a good neighbor. Pay attention to sisters and female friends. SAGITTARIUS: You’re on a roll when it comes to making gains. Your material outlook is much brighter. It’s time to reinvent your self for the New Year. Perfect your ability to come across as a competent professional. Even if your profession is “partier.” CAPRICORN: Happiness in relationships starts with two people that were happy even before they met. Like energies attract. Discipline yourself to smile more often. Find good qualities in people that challenge you. Embrace your dark side. AQUARIUS: A new spiritual vision is ready for you to share. Helping others to feel okay about who they are is one of the jobs that you do best. Be optimistic and hopeful. We often manifest the things we obsess about. PISCES: Your power plant will pay you big dividends. Focus on things that satisfy and sustain you. Your career and social life will begin to mingle this week. Set creative goals in concrete terms. It’s a great time for ceramics, woodworking and sculpture. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Donna Mills 12/11/43, Dave Clark 12/15/42, Tim Conway 12/15/33 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Scalawag Songs When I was younger, I used to wish that songs would be dedicated and sung to me by name—just for me and me only. This past weekend, I discovered that you should be careful what you wish for. I went to a birthday celebration for Electric Steve at the Sly Mongoose in Lahaina. The “Old Pirate” was there and picked up his guitar in spontaneous good cheer. He sang some crowd favorites, like the “Wild West Show” and a rendition of Don Ho’s “Tiny Bubbles.” Then he dedicated a special song, just for me. I beamed appreciatively—at first. “She’s got lipstick in her teeth,” he sang. The bar roared and I hid my face, missing some of the more risqué lyrics, until the chorus. “Let’s do something cheap and insensitive,” he sang. “Tonight!” Somehow, the pointing and laughing weren’t part of my deepest desires to have a song dedicated to me. Hmpf. Then Electric Steve asked to sing a special birthday song to all the ladies in the bar. There were four of us, including BJ, Donna and the Old Pirate’s wife. “I wanna stick my **** in you,” he sang. “I wanna stick my **** in you…” You get the point. After everyone sufficiently groaned in embarrassment and discomfort, Steve finished his American Idol tryout with some good ol’ shameless self-promotion. “Everyone loves Electric Steve,” he sang. “Everyone loves Electric Steve…” BJ and I were actually quite impressed with the inherent punk rock quality Steve inflected upon his sweet, sweet little ditty. And then BJ punched him. Last weekend I went to the Mana’o Radio Benefit party at Wow-wee Maui’s Café, where the public radio station 91.5 FM was hosting food, friends and fun in an effort to raise some dough and excitement for their new programs. There were lots of people I had never seen before milling about outside and tons of folks dancing inside. Marty Dread was playing his usual lively, positive set of reggae music. Okay, so I have a tiny schoolgirl crush on Marty Dread. I can’t help it, he’s just so damn sweet! And as he looked out into the throbbing mass of dancers and began one of his more popular songs, he spotted me trying to be incognito in the crowd and called me out. “Hey! Isn’t that Holoholo Girl in the back?” he pointed to me and the crowd followed his gaze. As I stood stupefied and stunned like a deer in headlights, he then proceeded to switch up the lyrics to his next song… “Free and single, she likes to mingle,” Marty sang. “She’s the Holoholo Girl!” Okay, that’s it. I’m gonna start calling him Naughty Dread from now on. Chance and the Bluesdaddies performed after that, and I filled up on the all-you-candrink Kava, getting that pleasant, mouth-numbing, relaxed, natural buzz immediately. Leaning back against the wall for balance, I spotted a strikingly handsome young man, looking somewhat like a Latin Johnny Depp—you know, like in Don Juan DeMarco?—across the room. He was to play with the next band, the Internacionales Pasteles (International Pastries). Yeah, he looked good enough to… “He’s pretty hunky,” somebody noted. I nodded dumbly. “Geez, I hope he’s the lead singer—he shouldn’t be hiding behind the drums or anything!” He ended up hiding behind the keyboards and we made international eyes at each other before I made a mad dash off the next place, as I am wont to do. I walked up to the bar at Life’s A Beach in Kihei, and sat next to a man loudly enjoying his Mudslide and the live music of the John Moore Project. He was doing everything rather loudly, in fact. “Hi,” he said, looking me up and down. “You look like you have a lot of mana.” I smiled politely at him, he went on. “I’m brilliant. Do you know who I am? I’m a legend around here!” “Should you really be telling me you’re brilliant AND a legend?” I asked. “I just want you to know the truth!” he said. “They sent you here to write about ME, didn’t they?” I decided that was my cue to strike up a conversation with ANYONE else at that point, and fortunately, Ron from the Crunch Pups was standing close by. He gave me a friendly warning to beware of the scoundrels and scalawags in these parts. “And the barnacles,” he said. “You know, BAR-NICKELS: they cling onto you and don’t let go!” MTW
