LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THE GOOSE IS LOOSE Just a footnote to Samantha Campos’ wonderful and accurate article about the world-famous Sly Mongoose (Dec. 11). On the evening of the notorious brawl, the night was saved when a guardian angel from above appeared at the door (he was sleeping upstairs). Within moments, the place came to a total standstill! John “Dude” Rawlings, a true Lahaina legend, was not only one of the toughest guys in town, but he also owned the Mongoose at the time. Being none too pleased at the sight of his saloon being busted up, it took no more than the look on his face to clear the bar—like shit through a goose, pun intended. -Douglas C. Neidermeyer, Sergeant at Arms, Sly Mongoose

My four-year-old child would like me to point out to you guys that the particular species gracing last month’s front cover is not actually a mongoose—in fact, not even close. Not even in the same family, guys. It’s a meerkat. I mean, you were trying to pun on Lahaina’s World Famous Sly Mongoose by picturing a mongoose with a drink, right? That was the plan, right? Well, next time you need somebody to do some animal-kine research for you, give my kid a call. -Amy and Jonah Masko, Haiku The Editor Responds: My compliments to your son’s exceptional zoological knowledge, but, to be honest, we knew all along that the animal pictured on our cover holding a cocktail was a meerkat. This was, naturally, our point. We always wanted a meerkat—indeed, we had to

have a meerkat. Do you have any idea how long we searched for the perfect meerkat image? They’re not easy to find, you know. We had to have a meerkat, as you and I know very well, because the name of the bar is “The World Famous Sly Meerkat.” As far as an explanation as to why we erred and called it “The World Famous Sly Mongoose,” I really have no idea, except to say that research on an establishment that serves alcohol is unlike any other kind of research journalists undertake. We apologize to all concerned.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE EDITOR So we know you [Anthony Pignataro] don’t like mega-tsunamis, the Big Cat, Lawrence Welk or the Maui Weekly, but what gives with attack on Chicken Soup for the Soul (Coconut Wireless, Dec. 11)? What don’t you like about good, decent people who honestly want to make the rest of our lives better? I guess sincerity doesn’t mean a whole lot to you. How sad. Sarcasm’s fine, but why don’t you try giving the cynicism a rest now and then? -Anonymous, via email

SNOT ON MY BROCCOLI This is to the produce guy at the supermarket. I saw you standing over the vegetables repeatedly hocking and sneezing into the produce as you restocked. You were sick as a dog and made no effort to turn your head. How could you possibly be that stupid? You do know that people go home and eat that broccoli, right? It took every bit of restraint I had not to go over there and shove your head into the apple bin. If I ever see that again I will make sure you get fired. You are the reason I have so little faith in my fellow man. I just wonder how many people got sick as a result of your lack of consideration and obvious ignorance.

CALLING A CAB You live on Maui. So do the airport taxi drivers. They stay your neighbors. Every airport driver pays $4 for a fare dispatched from the Airport. You may wonder why cab drivers don’t like taking you from the airport to Costco or K-mart. It has something to do with the fact that it costs them $4 to earn the $5.50 they get for taking you to Costco. How would you like to make $1.50 after waiting four hours for a passenger from the Airport? Think! You can help them and yourself by getting to know one cab driver and calling them every time you need a ride to or from the airport. It doesn’t cost the drivers anything to take you to the airport, only from the Airport. Calling your favorite driver will guarantee you a good ride and save them $4 or more. Pre-arranged pickups at stand #3 instead of the taxi stand #1, cost the driver nothing.

Battling Fuzzy Awareness Or, what the Makena Video Contest is all about Makena Beach is the last stretch of pristine shoreline left on Maui’s lee side. Even sitting on one of the many beach parks will still expose you to a passing truck or motorcycle. If you want to get away and hang at a beach without having noise or traffic or a giant hotel and timeshare resort at your back, Makena’s it. That is, until the Japanese conglomerate Seibu finally gets its way with the Maui County Council. Development plans gestating since the 1970s include hundreds of hotel rooms and timeshare condos—a project as large as Wailea itself. Finding general apathy from island residents on the scale of the project, a consortium of local activists and groups that don’t even have a name and meet only when everyone’s in town began gathering ideas on how to keep from losing such a precious natural resource. The activists eventually agreed to hold a “Makena Video Contest”—an open call for short films about the importance of Makena. “There’s been this kind of fuzzy awareness about Makena,” said Marcia Godinez,

Lahaina

a local financial manager. “Making videos is very accessible to people.” For about a year in the late 1970s, Godinez lived at Makena when “it was really still pretty wild.” For Godinez, the fact that she and other activists are still finding people largely uninformed about Makena has an eerie parallel in her own life.

The contest is named “E Kupa’a Honua’ula,” which roughly translates from Hawaiian as “don’t give up the beach.” The name comes from Kahiwaonalani Davidson, the 10-year-old daughter of group member Malia Davidson. “I would like Honua’ula to be protected so we can all enjoy its beauty forever,” said

HOW CAN WE EMPLOY LOTS OF PEOPLE IN DIGNIFIED JOBS, NOT HARM THE ENVIRONMENT AND GIVE BACK TO THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE? THAT’S WHAT WE WANT FOR MAKENA.” “I used to go to Airport Beach in Lahaina,” she said. “The kiawe trees have been growing there forever. We’d see the construction of the nearby timeshares, but we never thought much of it. Then all of a sudden, we arrived one day and the kiawe trees were gone. The forest was mowed down and the beach was gone forever. My friend and I just burst into tears. We’d known for months that it was going to happen, but then—Bang!”

Kahiwaonalani in a video contest brochure. “This is the land where the bones of my ancestors lay. I want this land and the ocean to be respected.” The contest includes three divisions: amateurs under 18, amateurs over 18 and professionals. To qualify, films must be between three and 10 minutes long and say something about Makena. There is a $25 entry fee, and checks are to be made out to Maui Tomorrow,

one of the groups fighting Seibu’s Makena plans. The fee includes ticket entry to the Feb. 6 awards ceremony at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center Castle Theater. The contest is open to everyone—even developers, construction workers or anyone who feels building out Makena is the way to go. So far, the group has received four entries, but Godinez says that doesn’t bother her. “We want something for Makena that will give to the community rather than take from it,” said Godinez. “The whole area is full of archaeology. Look at the Maui Ocean Center— they have 1,000 people going through 365 days a year. This is how our group started out—not as a bunch of tree-huggers, but we’re asking how can we use this area to make $10 million over a 50-year period? How can we employ lots of people in dignified jobs, not harm the environment and give back to the Hawaiian culture? That’s what we want for Makena.” The deadline for entries is Jan. 10. LOCALNEWS MONDAY, DEC. 15 You know what we need more of? Those TV shows where normal, regular but still attractive schmoes go on blind dates with other normal, regular but still attractive schmoes and then get in the most amazing hot tub-related hyjinks. Who comes up with this stuff? No, really, I want to know. Hollywood is, like, the Promised Land for hacks like me. Anyway, you can only imagine how excited I was to hear that this weekend The Learning Channel’s “A Dating Story” was on Maui setting up 25 to 35year-olds to go on “a terrific blind date,” according to, of all people, Maui County Film Commissioner Benita Brazier… We have a Maui County Film Commission? Really?… Brazier went on to note in a press release that the show “will bring one of the most watched cable destinations in the country to the best travel destination in the world.” Uh huh. Who died and made TLC— Cable TV’s answer to a question I don’t recall anyone asking—“one of the most cable watched destinations in the country?”

TUESDAY, DEC. 16 Had no idea developer Kent Smith had pissed off so many people with his Pu’unoa proposal calling for a bunch of socalled “affordable” homes just on the southern outskirts of Lahaina. Then I went strolling through Lahaina’s Kamehameha Iki Park tonight at sunset and found a few dozen locals listening to a little music and bashing a few home builders. It was just a small, informal gathering to celebrate the pasting the Maui County Council gave the Pu’unoa project, which promised many more “affordable” homes than it ever would have delivered. There was a little jam session with Uncle Willie K, among others, then a few Hawaiian activists spoke about

the need for authentic affordable housing built according to the usual county environmental regulations and requirements. “We want to work out some other options so affordable housing comes from the people and not the developers,” said Ke’eamoku Kapu, whose family has claimed the Pu’unoa land from way back. “But right now, we want to slow down. Listen to the music, instead of the rhetoric.”

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 17 The Maui Land and Pineapple Co. is getting out of the pineapple business… in Costa Rica. And after a whopping four years growing pineapple down there, too! According to today’s Maui News, it seems the company— which owns 29,000 acres of land ‘round these parts—wants to put the “Maui” back in “Maui Land and Pineapple Co.” Guess it kinda makes sense, though “Costa Rica Land and Pineapple Co.” has a nice ring to it… Speaking of the Maui News, we’ve got a late entry in the 2003 Most Shocking Headline Contest, but it’s a good one. “Aviation has changed dramatically since the Wright brothers’ first flight,” read this Maui News headline over today’s George F. Will column on—that’s right kids!—how aviation has changed dramatically since the Wright brothers’ first flight. Now you’d think that after all my years of gritty street reporting, there wouldn’t be much left in this world that rattles me. But I can say with absolute honesty that I found this column headline jarring. I’m still shivering… Just got word from the State of Hawaii Department of Defense Civil Defense Division—hold on a moment while I salute— that they’ll be testing the Emergency Alert System next month on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at 11:45 in the a.m. Now please make a note of this on your calendar and in your daybook and palm pilot or just do what the rest of us do and write it on your hand so that when the Doomsday Whistle does go

SATURDAY, DEC. 20 The Kuleana Ku’ikahi hui that lives mauka of the now-defunct Pu’unoa project has decided to reopen its case against landowners Peter Martin and Jim Riley, says today’s Maui News. They said their original mediation agreement with Martin and Riley’s West Maui Land Company—which wants to build large-lot agricultural subdivisions on 2,500 acres of Laniuopoko land—was voided by the sudden appearance of high-density houses at Pu’unoa. They said Martin and Riley never mentioned building such cramped units before, so they want the State Land Use Commission (LUC) to take up the whole thing again. Of course, this is the same LUC chaired by Lawrence Ing, who has not only shown a great affection to large-scale development projects, but has also disclosed at a previous hearing how he, Martin and Riley have been buddies for “over 30 years.” MTW

sive, you whine. Oh, there’s price-fixing. Or collusion. Or gouging. Or all three. Well, all I can say is that you folks have had it too good for too long. Because today, the corporate brain trust at Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines announced that they’re probably going to raise ticket prices. Seems the price of fuel has gone up, so they’re boosting their fuel surcharge from $20 to $26… Price of fuel has gone up… I may be wrong about this, but doesn’t fuel come from oil? Hey, it does! And oil comes from—wait, don’t help me—um, the Middle East! Didn’t we just fight a war there to stabilize the region and open up Iraqi oil fields and pretty much flood the world’s supply and thus drop the price of light sweet crude? Mmmm…. Light sweet crude. Hey, I’m just asking… The University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy finally decided to switch on their new two-meter telescope sitting high atop Haleakala today, and, amazingly enough, they saw stars. Lots of stars. Pretty stars. Stars that tell me to burn things… What? Oh yeah. We were talking about the scope. Anyway, the Institute says the Faulkes Telescope North—named, no doubt, after Guy Faulkes, who tried to blow up the British House of Parliament in 1605— will be “the largest, most powerful tool ever made available for undergraduate education and outreach.” Wow—that’s a pretty big tool.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORY Municipal employee George Pavlovsky stalked through his shop in April, drunk, carrying a loaded, sawed-off shotgun (sending colleagues fleeing in fear), and looking for the two supervisors who had recently passed him up for promotion. As a result, he was fired by the city (Moncton, New Brunswick) and went to jail in November, but he said through his union (Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 51) that he wants his job back when he gets out, and the union has filed a wrongful-firing grievance on his behalf. Several of his colleagues are still on stress leave from witnessing the incident.

LATEST CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH Prof. Trevor Cox (University of Salford in England) and fellow acoustics researchers concluded that, contrary to prevailing wisdom, a duck’s quack does have an echo (September). And biologist Nette Levermann (Copenhagen’s Zoological Museum), whose team monitored 100 walruses near Greenland, concluded that the animals use their right flippers more than their left (October). And an aerodynamics expert at Britain’s Open University, aided by an Oxford engineering student, designed and machine-tested a beer coaster to produce the ideal model and conditions for winning at the British pub game of coasterflipping (November).

IMAGINE SEEING YOU HERE In October, imprisoned child molester Kevin Kinder, 31, scheduled for a routine court hearing, was temporarily placed in a holding cell in Tampa, Fla., with 60 other prisoners, among them a 22-year-old man

BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

who immediately recognized Kinder as the man who had molested him when he was 11. The man started punching Kinder and knocked out a tooth before he was restrained.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE About 40 percent of U.S. elementary schools have eliminated recess over the last 20 years (according to a September story in New Times Broward-Palm Beach, Fla.), so that schools could squeeze in more classroom time. In addition to the problem of overweight students, Florida school psychologist Marvin Silverman referred to children’s “chemical need” for recess, pointing out that even psychiatric institutions give recess to help with “mood and movement.” A complicating factor is that in some schools, playground equipment has already been removed because of safety concerns and fear of lawsuits.

RECURRING THEMES Once again in October, panic spread through some African cities about black-magic men who could, with a mere touch, make penises shrink or disappear. In alleged incidents in Khartoum, Sudan, and Banjul, Gambia, these sorcerers would shake men’s hands and then extort money in exchange for removing the evil spirits they had just incited. As word spread and fears heightened, vigilantes would chase down the suspected sorcerers and beat them up or kill them.

OPED

BY TED RALL

The Trial of Saddam Hussein AHMED CHALABI: Good morning, Mr. Hussein. I am Ahmed Chalabi, chairman of the Iraqi National Congress, President-in-Waiting of the Islamic Republic of Occupied Mesopotamia and special prosecutor in The People of Iraq vs. Hussein. SADDAM HUSSEIN: I know who you are. AC: Are you Saddam Hussein, most recently to have resided at No. 4 Chicken Run Road, Basement Apt. 1, Ad Dwar, Salahuddin Province? SH: The one and only! AC: Very well. As you are aware, you have been charged with a number of serious offenses. Let’s begin with your war against Iran, which killed more than a million Iraqis and Iranians between 1980 and 1988 and destroyed our national economy. SH: Ah, well, I can explain that. I wanted to give up that stupid war as soon as the Iranians began fighting back, but Secretary of State George Schulz kept bugging me about it. He called me up all the time, in the middle of the night—like the whole world is on Washington time, you know? Keep on rockin’, Saddie, he said. Don’t be a wuss. You’re our strategic bulwark against Iran. I admit it. I was flattered. When the Great Satan tells you he needs you to become his “strategic bulwark,” what are you gonna do, say no? Plus President Reagan kept sending me cash and bombs. AC: Did you use a nerve gas called tabun against the Iranians, in violation of the 1925 Geneva protocol against the use of chemical weapons? SH: Well, yeah, but Donald Rumsfeld gave me a note. AC: Why don’t we just— SH: You see, Rumsfeld was Reagan’s special Middle East envoy—1983, I think it was—and he came over to visit me at the palace. We celebrated Ramadan together, saw a few shows. We were tight, though you’d never know it to hear the way he talks now! Back then, though, Rummy was

my dog. He told me that the president had authorized him to do “whatever’s necessary” to help me go all the way to Teheran. The Americans knew that I was gassing those Shiite Iranians like nobody’s business, and they loved it! You have to understand, they were still pissed about that hostage thing. That’s why they offered me full diplomatic relations. I figured hey, it’s a tough neighborhood, what with psycho Israelis bombing my brand-nuke plant and the Saudis chopping off their princesses’ heads down south—I needed a friend, Rummy needed a friend, it worked out. AC: You gassed 5,000 Kurds at the town of Halabja in 1988. JUDGE KATHERINE HARRIS: Phrase queries in the form of a question, counselor. Like in Jeopardy. AC: Sorry, your honor. Mr. Hussein, did you gas 5,000 Kurds at Halabja? SH: Actually, that was the Iranians. Hold on…(fumbles through papers)…here it is. Stephen Pelletiere, the main CIA political analyst on Iraq during the 1980s, wrote about this in The New York Times last January. He says yes, Kurds were gassed during one battle between us and Iranian troops, but the CIA “cannot say with any certainty that Iraqi chemical weapons killed the Kurds…The condition of the dead Kurds’ bodies however, indicated they had been killed with a blood agent—that is, a cyanide-based gas—which Iran was known to use. The Iraqis, who are thought to have used mustard gas in the battle, are not known to have possessed blood agents at the time.” Rumsfeld gave me permission to for mustard gas. AC: Still, your soldiers used poison gas! Didn’t you realize that you’d gone too far? SH: The Americans kept telling me I hadn’t gone far enough! I told them I wanted to end the war, but Reagan didn’t want me to submit to “regime change”—that was Ayatollah Kholmeini’s main demand to stop the fighting. Reagan had his CIA director Bill Casey ship me zillions of Chilean cluster bombs, but they still didn’t stop the Iranians. Some “strategic bulwark,” huh? (bitter laughter) AC: Um—OK. When did you decide to invade Kuwait?

PHOTO: IRAQI NEWS AGENCY / ZUMA PRESS

Selected highlights from a future transcript

Ready to testify SH: That was a terrible misunderstanding. Look, the other OPEC guys were leaning on me to do something about Kuwait because they were exceeding production limits and driving down prices. They’re your problem, they said. I figured, why not kill three birds with one stone—reunite with a province artificially partitioned by the Brits, sate OPEC and stop the Kuwaitis’ nasty habit of drilling sideways into our oilfields? But I was a good CIA employee. I would never have done something like that without talking to my bosses in the Bush Administration first. AC: This would be George H.W. Bush? SH: Yeah, yeah, the slightly smarter one. Anyway, I had my intelligence people analyze statements coming out of the White House to figure out whether they’d mind if I invaded. On July 24, 1990, a week before we went in, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said, “We do not have any defense treaties with Kuwait, and there are no

special defense or security commitments to Kuwait.” On July 31, Representative Lee Hamilton asked Assistant Secretary of State John Kelly, testifying before a House foreign affairs subcommittee, whether it was true that the U.S. would not send troops to defend Kuwait if I invaded. “That is correct,” Kelly said. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie—they both told me it was OK to take out Kuwait! Then, when I did, they pretended we’d never talked about it first. It all goes to show, never deal with a middleman. I didn’t want to bother President Bush during his August vacation. That’s what you get for showing a little consideration. By the way, do you think there’s any chance I could get my old job back? Tell Rummy I miss him! AC: Your honor, I’d like to request an adjournment. SH: But you haven’t asked about my weapons of mass destruction! MTW

Kayaking La Perouse Those days may be over Hawaiian people sure do hate the kayakers. For anyone too busy attending the Dec. 19 Prince concert to get to the State Department of Land and Natural Resources meeting at Maui Waena Elementary School in Kahului, this fact became abundantly clear. Actually, the Hawaiians and locals at the meeting didn’t really hate all kayakers—just the ones who frequent ‘Ahihi Cove and La Perouse Bay, both of which they consider sacred “Close it up and protect the resources!” said one local. “It’s chaotic down there,” said another. “As a Hawaiian, we kept that part of the island sacred. We didn’t go there, except for food. They dirty the water.” Indeed, the State of Hawaii is considering shutting off all access to La Perouse Bay and ‘Ahihi Cove. Their preferred plan is to restrict the whole area to no more than 36 kayaks per day, but DLNR deputy director Dan Davidson, who more or less moderated the meeting, said a total shutdown remains an option. Davidson then opened the “informal” meeting to anyone who wished to comment. It didn’t help matters that the very first speaker called for all but total commercialization of La Perouse. “The place is going to become extremely more commercial in the next few years,” said Martin Kotz, owner of the Kihei-based Pacific Coast Kayak Co. “It’s not a matter of encouragement. It’s a matter of public right.”

Kotz, who except for the silver cell phone clipped to a brown belt wore nothing but beige, wasn’t a favorite with the largely Hawaiian, antikayak crowd. He drew a crude map on an easel in front of the audience showing where he wanted boulders removed, portable bathrooms installed, roads paved and a tollbooth installed. After continuously interrupting people and trying to shout others down, a security guy escorted him out. “In 1700 there were 300 canoes launching there every morning!” he yelled as the guard led him away. “I deal with him every morning,” lamented one local after Kotz had left. “Lucky you,” said someone sitting near. Kotz enraged the Hawaiians, who then spoke repeatedly of the importance the land holds to them spiritually as well as ecologically: “Let the land rest!” “Your pictures in [the La

Perouse draft] report show the detriment those activities have caused! You people have failed miserably!” “It’s all about respect!” “Enforce the laws you already have! And do it tomorrow!” “How much more do the Hawaiian people have to give to this thing called commoditization? It’s a healing place, not a zoo!” A few, like kayak operator Dino Ventura—who ironically agreed that the state should close access to La Perouse for six

months to allow a full biological study—also bashed the book Maui Revealed, for recommending the area as a splendid kayak, snorkeling and scuba location. “This book is probably the biggest, most destructive thing down there,” said Ventura. “It shows no respect. The first thing we gotta do is get rid of this book.” Of course, it isn’t just Maui Revealed that boosts La Perouse and ‘Ahihi Cove as great activity spots. Maui Dive Shop’s free Maui Dive Guide characterizes both locations as “excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving” and gives plenty of detailed maps and directions on how to get there but precious few warnings about disturbing the locals or delicate sea life. Though kayakers have been guilty of being arrogant, thoughtless and crass—heading in and out of La Perouse as though they owned the place—they’ve also done their part to help clean up the area. On Sept. 20, a bunch of kayakers pulled all sorts of junk out of the water (‘Truck Tires?’ Sept. 25). But for the most part, the audience didn’t want to hear about any good things kayakers might have done. “It would be unfortunate if vigilantism crept into this,” said one Hawaiian guy near the end of the meeting. “The ‘protectors of Aloha’ are prepared to act.” After that little announcement, the hitherto excited audience suddenly got really quiet.

Michael Franti performed the song “Bomb The World To Pieces” in January at a peace rally in San Francisco. It was shortly before the U.S. government went to war against Iraq. It was a moving, acoustic performance that worked the 200,000-plus crowd into frenzy. After that day, the words “You can bomb the world to pieces, but you can’t bomb it into peace,” became a catch phrase in the Bay Area. Two versions of that song appear on Spearhead’s latest album, Everyone Deserves Music, the band’s most musically diverse and appealing effort to date. Franti’s music is rebel music. His scathing social commentary is always right on. His point becomes more universal and positive on the latest record and the songs mix soul, hiphop and funk with an upbeat message—all this in spite of the harsh realities he addresses. Franti is a dedicated activist and works hard to wake people up to the realities of what’s really going on in America. Through his music, he educates and entertains in the tradition of Curtis Mayfield, Chuck D and Lynton Kwesi Johnson. “Michael is such an example for us because he is getting out there and spreading his message at a time when it is not the most popular thing to say, but he is out there spreading love,” said his friend Laura Louie. “Seeing him in concert is phenomenal. I left Maui in April of this year just because I felt like I needed to see Michael play live. His intention is to play for three hours. To see that is the way to start the New Year.” On Jan. 2, Spearhead will appear in concert on Maui. The show will be in conjunction with the group VoiceYourself.com, founded by Louie and her husband Woody Harrelson. Franti and I recently spoke by phone

Spearhead’s songs detail a few rough situations, but always in a hopeful way. This positive vibe comes out clearer than ever on Everyone Deserves Music. “Music is not the best educator, but it is a great inspirational flower,” said Franti. “That is what we have. Music is a great opportunity to inspire other people to feel. Sometimes you watch things on the news and it makes us become crass because we hear all the political costs of war, the economic costs of war, but not the human costs. That’s what music does—it brings us to the human place.” Michael Franti is the change that he wants to see in the world and works hard to inspire people and make the world a more joyful place. “What we are doing is not going to change things overnight,” he said. It is going to move in the time it takes a tree to grow. Each little bit that we add in terms of raising our voice whether it is at the water cooler at work, at the dinner table with our families, or going out in the street to raise our voice in protest all adds up. Without any of it, without each little bit of it our tree cannot bear fruit. It might not be fruit that we’ll see in our lifetime, but over the accumulation of time.” Activism often creates an “us vs. them” mentality. This can be ineffective if it makes people too angry. Franti’s music wakes people up, but makes them feel happy, too. Listening to Spearhead’s albums from the first one to the most recent shows the evolution of a man and his powerful message. “I don’t know if we’ll ever avoid the anger of people,” he said. “They are angry because they feel powerless. When I started writing songs they came from a place of anger because I felt that same way. The more

Everyone Deserves Spearhead By Joe Gatto while he was on tour in New York. “One thing that I’ve learned from my experiences on Maui is that you are very connected to the earth and the cycles of life,” said Franti, who added that he has spent a little bit of time on Maui and looks forward to playing here and doing yoga afterward. “You see it in trees, fruit, in the ocean,” he said. “Right now for an incredible contrast I’m in Times Square, as far removed from Maui as you can possibly be. I think it is important even here in Times Square, that the part of nature that still exists here is in the hearts of the people, although it is removed from that part of nature that is in the planet.” His musical adventures take him to many exotic places (he will be coming here from Tasmania, for example) and his message resonates with people wherever he goes. “We were in Istanbul recently which had just been hit two weeks before by car bombings,” he said. “So we had to decide amongst the band if it was safe to go do the show. I left it up to each individual member of the band to decide if they wanted to come or not. Five members of the band decided that it was better to stay and two of us ended up going and I picked up three musicians in Holland and ended up teaching them our songs in ten hours. The people there who came to the show were so happy since all of the other acts cancelled. Turkey shares a border with Syria, Iraq, and Iran so it is a difficult time. People there are really in love with music though. When you walk down the streets and go into cafés there are people singing songs and out in the street playing music.”

COVER STORY

I became involved with working in prisons, schools, organizing demonstrations, working with music everyday to bring loving light to people, I feel that I do have a power. I feel like I can add something and be a service to others. So that’s the thing I try to encourage is to get involved and use that energy for something positive. Then you find that what you really need is inspiration and that is where music and art come in to inspire people over time to continue to shine on from their hearts and not be reactive, but proactive year round in our daily lives to do loving acts in the world.” Through Spearhead’s music, it is evident that Franti is a very conscious and aware man. It is clear he chose his path wisely and has given himself over to it completely. “Something that I’ve always wanted to do is feel connected to the earth and the world I live in,” he said. “Instead of reading about the world in the newspaper I try to read the world itself. I travel a lot, I’m on the road nine months a year and always try to go to places I’ve never been before and I always get out into the street to talk to people to stay plugged into what is happening. This gives me food for my soul and creative energy as well.” Taking a distinct path has led Franti to some deeper realizations that can be tapped into through such songs as “What I Be,” “Pray For Grace” and “Love Invincible.” “I’ve operated outside of the mainstream for a long time and I happily decided that I would take the long road and just keep shining my light and keep going year after year so eventually when people do hear it that it is there and it is shining bright,” said Franti. “It is clear to me standing here in Times Square that everyone feels a sense of disconnection and it doesn’t matter from

which background you come or how much money you have. We’re all looking for something that is greater than the fanciest CD player you can buy. I try to write music that comes from that place and reaches out to the hearts of people who are looking for that.” The music of Spearhead balances fun, funky, entertainment with a message that needs to be spread to many people who have not yet awakened to that conscious vibe. “I don’t know what people need so I try to write what feels good to me,” said Franti. “What feels good to me is music that you can dance to, music that has beautiful melodies, music that has lyrics that are thought provoking, inspiring and humorous. That is what I look for in music so I just try to write what feels good to me and hope that it taps into what other people are feeling.” Above all this concert will be a fun way to ring in the New Year while getting turned on to the important issues of our time. “The tours that we’ve been doing with the full band are always a very rockin’ dance party and when people come they are going to experience being around people who want to shake their butts and let loose and end up falling on the floor in a state of ecstasy,” said Franti. VoiceYourself.com is an altruistic venture of Harrelson and his wife Louie. They say their organization “promotes and inspires individual action to create global momentum towards simple organic living and to restore balance and harmony to our planet.” Both Franti and the VoiceYourself.com family are dedicated to calling people to action, to inspiring individuals to make positive changes in themselves, thus

the world, and to doing it in a fun way. Louie and Harrelson say they live connected to nature while on Maui. VoiceYourself.com is a forum where people can go to get turned on to low impact, sustainable styles of living. They share with Franti the desire to put forth a positive message and actually be that message. “We have no choice but to emanate love and the Aloha spirit,” said Louie. “The rest of the U.S. lives in fear because of sensationalized media. We all must realize that we are people and all part of the world community.” Like the intimate feel one gets when listening to Spearhead’s Songs From The Front Porch or Live at The Baobab, VoiceYourself.com is like a get together with a friend. “The whole concept of ‘talk story’ is really what VoiceYourself.com is all about,” said Louie. “Share your story, tell us what is going on with you. We wanted to build the house, the location for people to come to and share ideas. VoiceYourself.com is trying to get people to raise questions and educate themselves, other than by flipping on the television or reading a major newspaper. This is why the internet is such a tool to get the truth out.” “Michael Franti really is the voice for what is going on in the world today,” she added. “We are old friends and he has been an inspiration for us to keep going.” Spearhead plays Friday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Amphitheater. Tickets are available online at www.hulatickets.com, all Maui Tacos locations, or at The Wine Corner and the Enchantress in Paia, Groove 2 Music and Requests in Lahaina, and Requests Records in Wailuku. Thirty-One Days of Specials

A.K.’s Café has great deals, greater portions My cousin recently told me all about her big four bedroom home she just bought. Her mortgage is just $1,500 a month! Well, after refinancing. I pay that much to rent a tiny two bedroom on the Westside! I guess that’s why she lives in Merced. It’s hard to find a good deal on this island. But if you look carefully you can find the little breaks here and there, like A.K.’s Café in Wailuku. Believe it or not, this little café can serve you a square lunch for $7. For $12.50 you can get a dinner including an entrée and two side orders. Plus, if you order nine lunches you can get the 10th free. When Chef Elaine Rothermel conceptualized her café, she wanted to provide Wailuku Town with more than just cheap eats. A.K.’s Café caters to those with special dining needs like diabetes and heart disease. She got the idea while working at Maui Community College and running a lunch kitchen at the Cameron Center. But don’t let the wholesome food scare you. Some of the “healthy options” include Grilled Chicken with Thai Chili ($6.50), Fish Tacos ($6.75) and Garlic Crusted Ono with Cucumber

Salsa ($7). The grilled chicken with Thai chili is tender and Thai sweet with a twang of spicy peppers. You can choose from brown or white rice, taro, steamed sweet potato, green salad, French fries, sweet potato fries, mac salad, ulu or poi as sides, and you get two, no matter what.

These portions are generous so watch out, your eyes can get bigger than your opu real easy here. Besides, you better save room for her apple pie or another dessert. For those on a restricted diet, Elaine keeps SlimFast desserts on hand as well. My most recent visit for lunch the chef recommended I get the garlic-crusted ono with cucumber salsa, along with steamed sweet potato and green salad. The salad came with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette that is out of this world—I am waiting for the day it’s bottled and sold. The garlic-crusted ono was wonderful, the crisp garlic crust a perfect accompaniment to the firm white fish. I am not a big fan of ono—I generally prefer the flakier mahi mahi—but this was well worth

Mmm... food

the change to my palate. I cleared my plate and longed for dessert but could not fit it into my belly, so I took a slice of apple pie to go. Later that day I greedily scarfed down my ohso-necessary sugar high with much satisfaction. It may have a delicate and flaky pastry surrounding sweet cinnamon and apple, but the fruit in it makes it healthy, right? I am already making eyes at the take-out menu, wondering when I can get over to Wailuku again and try the shrimp and artichoke over pasta ($11.50) or crab cakes with buerre blanc ($11.75) for dinner or the hamburger steak ($6.75) or roast pork ($6.75) for lunch. Unfortunately they don’t deliver to Lahaina—I asked—but Kahului and Wailuku people are in luck. Some of the other items on the menu include soups ($3.50), smoothies ($3.85), sandwiches ($4.00), or soup and half sandwich ($5.25), or a soup and salad combo ($5.00). A.K.’s also has 31 days of specials—something new and creative by Chef Rothermel everyday. You can actually pick up a calendar at the café that has all the daily specials laid out for you. For example, coming up this week they’ve got Caribbean jerk chicken, Chinese braised chicken and grilled mahi with lemon capers. Don’t let high prices and diet restrictions keep you from enjoying meals away from home. Treat yourself to some good times at A.K.’s café. Elaine keeps her eye on the food pyramid so you don’t have to. A.K.’s Café is located at 1237 Lower Main Street in Wailuku. They are open Mon. through Sat. for lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Call 244-8774 or fax your lunch order to 2447841 for delivery. MTW

BY COLE SMITHEY

Jack And Diane Senior comedy twirls with truth It’s rare for a romantic comedy to fulfill the demands of the genre the way Something’s Gotta Give so effortlessly does with a slap and a tickle. Harry (Jack Nicholson) is a bachelor in his 60s who dates only women 30 years old or younger. But Harry comes to his Waterloo when a heart attack leaves him stranded in the Hamptons home of his latest young fling’s mother Erica (Diane Keaton) who has great reservations about the dirty old man until Harry charms the pants right off her. Keaton and Nicholson are terrific in this tasteful and dynamic comedy of elders. Harry Sanborn is the polar opposite of the troubled character that Jack Nicholson played in last year’s unnerving and melan-

Something’s Gotta Give

★★★★★

choly About Schmidt. Harry is much closer to what we imagine the real Jack Nicholson to be. He’s charming, devilish and can work nearly any woman into a lather just by be being himself. Harry’s latest under-30 con-

quest Marin (Amanda Peet) seems to be a perfectly good match for his simmering loins until her playwright mother Erica Barry intrudes on the couple’s visit to her beach house. At first the friction is too much for Harry to even condescend to bear, but he allows himself to be persuaded to stay the weekend with the calming aid of Erica’s sister Zoe (Frances McDormand). Harry goes from being accused of being an intruder to being a verbal punching bag for Erica, who uses their initial dinner as a bully pulpit to express her feminist beliefs and personal agenda. The shoe is momentarily put on the other foot when Harry and Marin begin their noisy bedroom festivities within earshot of Erica. Harry’s failing heart, however, prevents him from consummating his desires with Marin, and a trip to the hospital has cardiologist Dr. Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves) prescribing Harry to stay in the area where his convalescence can be supervised. Dr. Mercer’s instant attraction to Erica factors into the new equation and sets up a rivalry between Dr. Julian and Harry. As Erica plays nursemaid to Harry, the two older singles develop an attraction that’s fueled by their sexual compatibility. But Erica finds herself in a similar situation to Harry with the much younger Dr. Julien courting her with an

Jack and Diane enthusiasm that’s difficult for her to deny. Erica and Harry are brought even closer when another heart seizure sends Harry back to the hospital, and the unlikely couple do the unheard of thing and fall in love. The unforeseen chemistry between Keaton and Nicholson is evident and adds a savory spice to the movie that glows with contentment. But Harry’s ticking clock to get back to the city soon returns to him to his former cavorting habits with a few second thoughts that will come back to bite him in the end. Director Nancy Myers (What Women Want) wrote Something’s Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in mind and her innate sense of the actors on-screen personas is spot-on. But she also manages to reveal her iconic characters within their vulnerable physi-

cal and emotional temperaments. ‘Vulnerability’ is not a word that springs to the lips when thinking of either of these two Hollywood stalwarts, and yet their intimate scenes together are full of a truth and sincerity that radiates with genuine emotion and lust. Neither Harry nor Erica is the person that they posture themselves as when circumstance sneaks up and reveals the inner logic behind the curtains of their façades. Erica enjoys a giggle at Harry’s expense when he’s being walked through the hospital halls in an openbacked gown that shows his naked butt. At that point, all of her humor and cheerful humanity bubble to the surface like a schoolgirl at a senior prom. Something’s Gotta Give is indeed a kind of senior prom comedy with real seniors having all the fun. Rated PG-13. 133 min. (B+) MTW

THE GRID

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: Wake up happy and feeling free. The moon will be in Aries Monday through most of Wednesday. You could end up making money at a New Years event. The weekend will be good for socializing, tying up loose ends, and dreaming. TAURUS: Go to the head of your class. Even if your “thinking cap” is on backwards, it’s still on. You have the kind of smarts that will take you places. Finding love at work will require the test of time. What is your spiritual vision in regards to right livelihood? GEMINI: The intensity level remains high, yet you’re optimistic. Mercury retrograde confusion can easily bleed over into your marriage or your partnerships. Male friends may be able to help. When in doubt, chill out at home. CANCER: Responsibility has never weighed heavier on your shoulders. Trust in your decisions. Let go of that which no longer works for you. You’re likely to travel this weekend. Out of passion you can emerge towards discovery. LEO: Light is on the increase in the northern hemisphere. Your attitude needs to be good for the health of yourself and others. Romance and good times are never too far away from you. Wash your hands frequently and get plenty of rest. VIRGO: Your creative mojo is in high gear. You are destined to be a winner. A playful approach to life is best taken at this point. Stay true to your heart. Be a light in the darkness. Offer your services as gifts. You are more than your net worth. LIBRA: Never take yourself for granted. Now is a good time to have some downtime and to reacquaint yourself with that old person you used to know. Family members need to be reminded of the “good times.” Your artistic side is about to surface. SCORPIO: Allow yourself to be more of a jock. Your energy is physical and you need to move with it. Your health is likely to improve if you exercise. You may be actively involved in providing a service. Persistence pays off. I see another creative breakthrough coming your way. SAGITTARIUS: The Sagittarian mission statement reads as follows “I promise to burp or fart during the middle of any boring meeting or conversation.” Sagittarians have bumper stickers that say “I brake for sports, sex and religion.” You have an angle on everything. CAPRICORN: Outside of feeling cheated of a real birthday because of Christmas, what would the one thing be about your life that you would change if you had the power? Allowing yourself to be vulnerable to intimacy might be a good place to start. AQUARIUS: Christmas is celebrated with moon in Aquarius this year. Expect people to loosen up a bit and share their dreams for the future. You’ll have people both charmed and hypnotized. Be involved with helping others that aren’t always noticed around the holidays. PISCES: With the moon in Pisces Saturday and Sunday, you can plan for rain or plan for water sports. This is also a very fertile moon good for planting seeds and getting pregnant. This is a powerful time for making friends. The future demands attention. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Robert Ripley 12/25/1893, David Knopfler 12/27/52, Michael Nesmith 12/30/42 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Kihei’s Fun Wasn’t that Prince show absolutely funk-fabulous? And that Maceo Parker sure can play a mean sax! What a mind-blowing show and what an incredible performer. Indeed, it was funk-erific. So my group of friends and I thought we were really cool ‘cause we got this hot tip that Prince was going to play at Hapa’s in Kihei after the concert. We heard Willie K and George Benson would be there, too. As well as Joe Cano and Eric & Amy Gilliom. Of course, the rumor mill also added on Willie Nelson to the bill. My head was swimming with the vision of a supposedly secret jam session and how my friends and I would be right there, front and center, in an intimate club with hardly anybody in attendance because it was so very, very secret. I was so distracted by the thought of this after-party, I barely noticed the VERY LOUD announcement made over the loud speakers at the MACC. “Go to Hapa’s for the official Prince after-party!” Yeah, well. So when we got there, about 200 people were already lined up outside. We hung around for quite a while and I saw girl after girl attempt various stratagems to get in. There was the obvious tactic—the name drop. You know, the old “I’m friends with the owner” or “I’m the niece of Prince’s stylist’s tax accountant—I should be on the guest list, dammit!” Somebody else tried to distract the door guys while others tried to slip by. One gussied up beauty even suggested the ol’ fart-to-clear-the-way trick, but people were willing to put up with a lot for the chance to get in. Last night, Sugar Shack girls Jen, Sonja and I went to see a psychic—Jason Oliver, in fact—in Kihei. He gave us all very enlightening readings in eerily accurate detail but basically told us we were looking for love in all the wrong places. Duh. Afterwards, we went to Stella Blues Café and ordered crab cakes and shepherd’s pie and roasted chicken with creamed corn. Then we started wondering if Kimo’s in Lahaina had any non-blonde servers. We didn’t think so anyway. Although our meal at Stella Blues was fabulous, the girls really had a craving that just couldn’t be denied. We were all way too full to eat anymore, but since there’s not a Jack In The Box anywhere on the Westside, they bought a couple of Ultimate Cheeseburgers to have for breakfast the next day. Unfortunately, as we were passing Olowalu, we asked each other why we didn’t hang out in Kihei longer. There’s so much action on Mondays there— Willie K at Hapa’s, Ace’s Radio Rehab at Life’s A Beach, new friends to be made at Kahale’s, trouble to be had with the Irishmen at Mulligan’s… the list goes on and on. But we were too close to home by then. So Jen decided to have a couch marathon viewing of the entire sixth season of Sex In The City, while Sonja and I opted to walk down to the Hard Rock Café for a drink. A drink. Oh yeah, and Marty Dread was playing. Whatever— so I think he’s sweet… and cute… but that doesn’t mean I’m trying to put it in print just to try to lure a date or something out of it. I mean, I hardly think I’m his type. What with the shy, reclusive persona and all. Anyhow, within five minutes, four different guys bought Sonja shots of Jägermeister and I realized then that we were in for the long haul. After some dancing and a couple of Orange Dreamsicles, we caught a ride with Clark down to Hecocks for last call. There, we met up with more friends and decided to take our party to the beach. After we stopped by the Sugar Shack to pick up Sonja’s bottle of Svedka—Swedish Vodka for my little Norwegian party girl—and the bottle of Maker’s Mark that she got me for Xmas, we kicked it seaside under the stars.
