I will soon proceed for my retirement leave this year, and I personally do not want this fund to be transferred into the bank treasure as unclaimed bill. That is why I wanted the fund to be move[d] out of the bank before I proceed on my retirement. The need for a foreigner as next of kin in this project is occasioned by the fact that the customer Mr. Ali Ashraf was a foreigner and a Nigerian cannot stand as his next of kin or heir. We have agreed that 30 percent of the Fund would be for you as foreign partner; thereafter my colleague and I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentages indicated. You were lurking in the bushes by the basketball court and probably didn’t realize the stupidity of harassing the people trying to help you. They were distributing packages, hugs and words of encouragement that day, while you guys were shouting obscenities and complaining about the things you were being GIVEN!! ‘Good Moral Values’ Fond memories of segregated plantation camp life Then there was the time the kids played football on a triangular field. “It’s still visible down the road here,” said Wes Nohara. “That’s where we used to play football. Imagine trying to play football on a triangular field, and having to score where it comes to a point.” There are only 18 other people in the intimate theater all but buried in the opulent caverns of the Kapalua Ritz Carlton, but Nohara has their full attention. He is talking story with some of his old friends and neighbors from his days growing up in one of the poor, rigidly segregated Honolua Plantation camps, which sat atop the site of the same Ritz Carlton resort hotel that’s hosting him this Dec. 26 evening. It may seem ironic that the same hotel that’s so lavish it boasts black marble paneling in the men’s rooms is sponsoring an informal gathering to discuss life in the near-colonial conditions of pineapple plantation camp life, but Nohara’s own life is pretty ironic. A product of the camp and a life of pineapple farming, he is the current manager of the Maui Pineapple
Company’s 7,500 acres of pineapple fields. “I am a pineapple farmer,” he said. “I feel best when I get home dirty and sweaty and all tuckered out but feeling I did a good job in the fields. It’s been years since I felt that way.” Nohara was born in 1954 at the old Pioneer Hospital in Lahaina, where the Hard Rock Café is today. He is a third-generation Maui resident—his great grandfather having left Niigata, Japan, in the early 1900s to trade poverty and starvation for work in the West Maui sugar cane fields. “My grandfather grew up in Kahualua, a little village,” said Nohara. “There’s still one family living there. He had to get to Lahaina Town by donkey. It was just a cobblestone road. In 1920, he moved to this village.” Nohara talked about hearing about his father’s youth, when he and his pals would steal sugar cane remnants off the truck and eat them, as they had no candy. He said the whole Honokohua area seemed to get a lot more rain in the 1960s than it does now. And he described the house he grew up in, with its badly constructed walls that allowed bees to enter, but later trapped them when rain and
humidity forced the wood slats shut. “You could hear the bumblebees in the walls,” he said. He remembers union strikes, soup kitchens and “great Filipino parties.” He remembers when D. T. Fleming Beach—named for one of Nohara’s first predecessors—was called Stables Beach. He also remembers when there was a working windmill at Windmills Beach and a fully functioning slaughterhouse near
“Other than that we had to make our own toys. We made our slingshots from guava branch. We took the tongue off a shoe and used that, too. Some used surgical tubing, but that was extravagant. Our memories are fond memories. It was a simple lifestyle. We learned good moral values.” Of course, Nohara also remembers the racist underpinnings that made up plantation camps. All workers lived in camps segregated by race—
“I FEEL BEST WHEN I GET HOME DIRTY AND SWEATY AND ALL TUCKERED OUT BUT FEELING I DID A GOOD JOB IN THE FIELDS. IT’S BEEN YEARS SINCE I FELT THAT WAY.” Slaughterhouse Beach. And he remembers days spent at secret spots diving for tako. “I had my own favorite spots,” he said, refusing to elaborate. “But I haven’t gone in the water for so long. If I take these [glasses] off I can’t see. The octopus is the ‘chamelon of the sea.’ To really dive for octopus you have to see. Otherwise the octopus is probably laughing at you.” Even into the late 1950s, early 1960s, life on the plantation camps more closely resembled Great Depression society. “The first toy I got was a jet on a string that you swung around your head,” Nohara said.
Chinese Camp, Japanese Camp, Filipino Camp, Hawaiian Camp (whites had no camp, being the overseers and all). The whole village had about 100 homes, with no more than 400 to 500 people at any given time. Despite the segregation, one Hawaiian family lived in Japanese Camp when Nohara grew up. After Nohara finished his talk, members of that family spoke of how Hawaiian camp residents repeatedly teased and hounded them for living with and making friends with Japanese people. “There was lots of prejudice,” said Nohara. “But there’s that everywhere.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, DEC. 22 Looks like Maui County’s getting close to $100 million in supplemental state and federal pork. So says a press release from Governor Linda Lingle’s Department of Budget and Finance. Seems Maui’s getting a cool $6 million for the Upcountry Maui Watershed Project, another $2.5 mil for the Makawao Public Library, nearly $1 million for the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, among other projects. You see, this is why I love Republicans. Your average Democrat, he promises big government and pork barrel spending for special interests back home, and he delivers. Us reporters call that “boring.” But the Republicans, they’re different. They rail against big government, decry pork and social spending and all that, then turn around and vote the appropriations anyway. In fact, much of the spending in the state’s supplemental budget is backed by federal funds, sent down by even more Republicans. Does the U.S. taxpayer really need to spend money on a new “comfort station” at the Lahaina Harbor? How about $8.6 million for “inline baggage improvements at Kahului Airport?” Or $24 million to widen Honoapiilani Road from Honokowai to Launiupoko? Oh, wait—that we need. Now!
TUESDAY, DEC. 23 Getting into the Christmas season, the Maui News editorializes that tourism isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The editorial says tourism was “all low key and manageable” throughout the 1950s and 1960s, but that “marketing” went haywire and now tourism is straining “the island’s aloha,” whatever that means. Basically, they lay all the fault at the doorstep of “the guidebooks.” Yeah. You tell those awful, awful
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
guidebooks. The developers and landowners who made billions of dollars building Ka’anapali, Kapalua, Kihei, Wailea and, if they get their way, Makena bear no responsibility whatsoever. The editorial even concludes by saying “about all residents can do is to try and correct bad information on a one-to-one basis.” That’s it? How about taking a more active and skeptical view of the hotel and resort construction? How about asking elected officials and appointed land use commissioners if they’ll keep approving new construction until the island runs out of agricultural land, because, folks, that’s all that’s left… Of course, tourist-industry mismanagement does it’s own part to curb tourism. Because Royal World Cruises went bankrupt a week ago and nearly lost its ship Olympia Explorer in Honolulu last week to German bankers intent on seizing the vessel, 750 pasty-skinned rubes never made it to Maui this week, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser. Now that’s a real shame. Those people spent between $2,000 and $10,000 to be on that boat, which never left Los Angeles harbor last night. The Advertiser says it’s “unclear” how the people will get their money back.

class. In his column yesterday, Krugman notes that in the last three decades “the average real income of the bottom 90 percent of American taxpayers actually fell by seven percent.” That’s an astonishing indictment of the so-called “American Dream,” in which each generation supposedly enjoys a higher quality of life than it’s predecessor. But if you think that’s bad, Krugman noted that over the same period “the income of the top one percent rose by 148 percent, the income of the top 0.1 percent rose by 343 percent and the income of the top 0.01 percent rose 599 percent.”

When We Can’t Do It Ourselves...
FRIDAY, DEC. 26 Seems we got a bit of the Mad Cow Disease up in Washington State. But this is no big deal, right? We can still eat the Happy Cows, right? Nothing to worry over, correct? What’s that? Scientists don’t really know if the disease is transferable from the bovine to the human? Hmmm… Then again, the U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn’t have all that great a track record on beef… Remember E Coli?
SATURDAY, DEC. 27
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 24 It’s Christmas Eve, so that means half the island will be spending it the old fashioned way—standing in line at Wal-Mart in Kahului. Ahh, Wal-Mart. Where a part-time old guy making minimum wage with no benefits greets you when walk in and low-skill dead-end young people also making the minimum sans health care ring up your 24-pack of toilet paper on the way out. To be fair, pretty much the whole service sector of the American economy is going that way. But contrary to Wall Street’s less than egalitarian view, this ain’t a good thing. In fact, according to recent pieces by New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and Business Week writer Aaron Bernstein, this kind of workplace is killing the middle
at 8 p.m. on Christmas and every day after that for 13 weeks,” said Jay April, Akaku producer and artist in residence. April went on to say in his press release that… wait a sec—“artist in residence?!” At a public access cable channel? What the hell does that mean? Why can’t I be an artist in residence? I wanna be an artist in residence! Unless it means I have to start living at the office. Then the deal’s off.
Ordinarily, I’d take today off, it being Christmas and all… but no. Instead I get to tell you all about all the “treats” that Akaku’s experimental Channel 54 will bring you, starting today. You know experimental Channel 54—they’re the masterminds behind last night’s Christmas Eve fireplace show. “The fun begins
Boy, I sure could go for a nice juicy filet right about now. Oh, about yay thick, wrapped in bacon with plenty of fried onions on top. Mmmm… plenty of fried onions on top. Yeah, that’s good eating. Think I’ll grill one up tomorrow… In a related story, police on Oahu shot and killed a 200-pound “rampaging wild boar.” Rampaging, sure—it was hiding under a house when they shot it! Anyway, the boar was first seen swimming in the waves off Ewa Beach. Um, okay. I hate to say it, but this is why other Hawaiian islands are better than us. Oahu has rampaging wild boars that attack surfers and then get killed by cops. What do we have? Feral chickens? A “Big Cat” that probably doesn’t exist but still manages to waste state funds?
SUNDAY, DEC. 28 Got my steak, got the trimmings and all I have to do is fire up the—what? The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making an announcement? Oh, this should be good! Let’s see what this is about… Hmmm, seems meat from the diseased cow got sent to other states… Yeah… States like California, Nevada, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and—what’s that last state, I can quite make out the letters… WHAT??!! Hawaii?! Wait a sec—six states? Just how big a cow are we talking about, here? MTW

Living in a Bio-diesel world Bio-Beetle is the perfect ambassador for alternative energy. The Bio-Beetle can easily get you a ticket if you enjoy shifting gears from first to fifth in short periods at high speeds. The Bio-Beetle also emits a great scent of Cupies-seasoned fried potato wedges. The car seemed to blend with the flora and fauna on the road to Hana. The moss green vehicle cruised past the skyscraping bamboo forest. On the way to Kahakuloa, the Bio-Beetle hugged the curves with precision while the sun’s rays kissed the skin through the sky roof

and danced on the waterfall in the deep valleys. The ride is so smooth that a natural high dominated my sense of driving. I was so fixated on the beauty of Molokai that I missed the braddah selling Maui Wowie on sticks by the side of the road. In Lahaina, I parked across from the Hard Rock Café on Front St. Intoxicated visitors came over and began asking questions. Mostly, whether it really ran on renewable vegetable oil. I assured them I could go inside any restaurant and obtain fuel, even though the tank

Bono’s “Its a Beautiful Day” is blaring through the car’s speakers, shattering the silence above the world at Haleakala. As the rising sun changes the colors of the sky from black to pink to orange and blue, the car breezes past a couple of Mustangs on top of a string of SUVs like the clouds in the crater. The one-touch sky roof allows me stunning star-gazing on the road to Haleakala. The car is the Bio-Beetle—the world’s first bio-diesel. Recently I was fortunate to take the car for a test drive around the island. Maui is in the fast lane for saving the planet and showing another world is possible through simple, daily living practices. Driving a Bio-Beetle is an educational, entrepreneurial, exotic, economical and, of course, ecological experience. As one who enjoys the sunrise every month at the Haleakala summit, the BioBeetle experience was heavenly. Driving the Bio-Beetle doesn’t harm the Earth’s beauty—not only does it help conserve landfills, but it doesn’t require a drop of oil. Many people don’t believe such driving is possible. They have to be convinced that alternative fuels won’t compromise the freedoms we enjoy or speeds we chase. I can speak through experience that the vehicles exist to take us to the next plateau of our passions for driving. Who knows—they might even reinvigorate our democracy. Pulling out from the Maui Community College campus and the headquarters of the Hawaii Institute for Human Rights powered by solar panels, it’s clear that the
was still full after a full day of driving. I answered the question of “Does it really run?” later, when I pulled up to a light next to a purple street racer. I pumped up the volume, reved the eco-engine as the guy next to me read the sticker on the back of Bio-Beetle saying, “Powered by 100% recyclable vegetable oil” while the smell of french fries flowed from my exhaust. People are naturally curious about the car. I was on the road to Hana at the fish taco stand. A New Yorker looked at the car, then began shaking his head. “Unbelievable,” he said. He and I talked about 10 minutes. He asked how it’s possible the car can make it past 40 miles an hour with renewable energy. “It’s the wildest thing I have ever seen in my living life,” he said. “This can change everything. In New York, we pay big money to have people take away our oil.” Another time I was outside the Komoda bakery picking up glazed donuts. A guy in a Chevy truck pointed out how he couldn’t ever switch to bio-diesel because he required power and pull. I told him about my experience up and down Haleakala. By the end of my day driving around Maui, my companion said simply “I feel like a superhero.” The message of “Thou Shall Not Steal” and “Stop Stealing Hawaiian Lands” is linked to people driving cars motored by fossil fuels. Indigenous peoples around the world from Ogoni in Africa to the Gwichin in Alaska are forced to defend their way of living in harmony with nature because people halfway around the world want to drive oil-hungry cars. With the Bio-Beetle, it’s now possible to drive and not fight the principles of democracy. We can drive around Maui watching waterfalls spilling into freshwater pools without worrying about displacing indigenous people or polluting nature. The years of driving a golf cart to save the planet in the name of a car are gone. MTW

Hawaii? The struggle for sovereignty By Don Gronning Kingdom of Hawaii. Hawaii Kingdom. Reinstated Hawaiian Government. Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Ka Lahui. The list of groups involved in advocating some form of Hawaiian sovereignty goes on and on. People differ on whether individual groups truly support sovereignty or what type is best, but they all spring from the same premise: that Hawaii was a recognized nation overthrown by the United States. “That’s very critical to understanding sovereignty, to understand that Hawaiians had a nation recognized by 100 something nations in the world. We had diplomatic relations with the United States, England and other European countries and the United States committed an act of war against the Hawaiian government,” said Haunani Kay Trask, professor of Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii. “Sovereignty today really begins from that historical injury.” The United States formally acknowledged that overthrow in 1993, when Congress passed and President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-150, known as the Apology Bill. Among other things, the bill “apologizes to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the people of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii on January 17, 1893.” It also urges the President of the United States to “support reconciliation efforts between the United States and the Native Hawaiian people.” Where to go from there is the dilemma facing the sovereignty movement. Most immediately, there’s a backlash against Native Hawaiian entitlements currently playing out in the courts. Added to that is the intensely controversial sovereignty legislation known as the Akaka Bill slowly creeping through the U.S. Congress. Skippy Iolani is a Native Hawaiian from the Big Island. Iolani said people filing the lawsuits challenging Hawaiian programs are like schoolyard bullies who take your lunch money and then slap you. Iolani, a member of a recent sovereignty discussion panel held at Maui Community College, says Native people have become frustrated and worn down. “People have a ‘fuck it’ attitude,” said Iolani. “If a bully keeps pounding you in the face, you learn to duck.” The lawsuits began when Big Island rancher Freddy Rice successfully sued the state, charging the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) with racial discrimination. OHA is a semi autonomous state agency formed in 1979. Their stated mission is to protect Hawaiian people, environment and OHA assets. They administer a variety of pro-

grams for Native Hawaiians. Before the Rice decision, Native Hawaiians elected the trustees. Now nonHawaiians can vote in OHA elections. Rice, a non-Hawaiian, claimed that the state—through OHA—unlawfully discriminated against him when they denied him the right to vote in an OHA election. In 2000, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Rice’s favor. After that came a host of other lawsuits working their way to the Supreme Court. Other groups established by Hawaiian royalty have set up programs to benefit Native Hawaiians with health, education and housing programs. Virtually all these programs are now under attack for being racially discriminatory. For Hawaiian people and their supporters, the backlash has been both disheartening and energizing. On one hand, it is hard not to view these court challenges as a direct attack on Hawaiian people, a people who have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778. Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers. At the time of western contact, some 300,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands. By 1805 that number had been halved. By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands. Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent. According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000. But only 239,000 live in Hawaii and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state. Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state’s population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state’s prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety. They make up 37 percent of the state’s homeless population, according to a 2003 survey by SMS Research and Marketing. It is against this backdrop that well-funded, anti-affirmative action groups attack Hawaiian programs. “It’s a national effort,” Trask said on the First Friday cable television show. She maintains that the lawsuits are racist and that those behind them are taking perverse pleasure dismantling programs meant for an already afflicted people. “They’re smugly enjoying it.” “I think it is just racism, imperialism in action,” said Iolani. “What I mean (by) racism is that the haole cannot
be unable to control.” There is really no dispute that in 1893 the United States illegally overthrew the Hawaiian nation under threat of military force. There is also no doubt that Native Hawaiians did not want the United States to annex them. In 1897, a year before annexation, they circulated petitions opposing annexation. Some 38,000 Hawaiians, including 1,944 in Hana, signed them. But the U.S. annexed Hawaii anyway, eventually turning it into the 50th state in 1959. Native Hawaiians became strangers in their own land as outsiders continued to move in, bringing with them more United States military forces and large-scale tourism. Now, faced with the very real possibility that all programs to benefit Native Hawaiians will be declared unconstitutional and eliminated, OHA is supporting a form of sovereignty, similar to the limited sovereignty that some Indian tribes have on the mainland. In 2000, U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawaii) introduced a bill in the Senate that would have granted Native Hawaiians federal recognition. The bill became known as the Akaka Bill but hasn’t yet been enacted. Trask said she supports the idea of a nation within a nation, which is what some Indian tribes have, but added that she doesn’t support the current version of the Akaka Bill, which is once again in Congress. “I supported the first version of the bill, but the current version has no land in it,” she said. “The biggest problem for Native people is land, so if the current version doesn’t call for land, I can’t support it.” The Akaka Bill does have support of Hawaii’s Congressional delegation, who are Democrats, as well as Hawaii’s Republican governor, Linda Lingle. U.S. Congressman Ed Case said he thinks the Bill will get through the House, but will have a tougher time in the Senate, where a hold has been placed on the bill. It will require 60 votes to override the hold, Case said. Case said Hawaii’s Senators, Daniel Inouye and Akaka, are “cautiously optimistic” that they will have the required 60 votes to bring the bill to the full floor of the Senate when Congress reconvenes this month. “They’ve signed up some pretty important Republicans, like Orin Hatch (R-Utah) who is the Republican chair of the judicial committee,” said Case. “Most Republicans in the Senate, I believe, are either neutral or supportive of this effort. It is not, by and large, a partisan issue. What would definitely help this effort
would be for the Bush administration to get solidly behind federal recognition, which they have not done thus far.” The Akaka bill does have the support of OHA. Boyd Mossman is a former Circuit Court Judge on Maui and a current OHA trustee. He said the main advantage to the Akaka Bill is that it would end legal attacks on OHA for racial discrimination. “It will also put us in a position where then we can then initiate a process to begin a self governance of basically, I would say, a nation within a nation,” said Mossman. He added that without the Akaka Bill, Native Hawaiians will lose all. “What is the alternative to the Akaka Bill?” he asked. “I’ve not heard an alternative, other than to go ahead and lose in the court, lose everything we have today in the way of benefits and preferences, lose everything we have had in the past 110 years and try to start from scratch. There is no alternative.” Trask, who has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin, disagreed, saying that the Akaka Bill isn’t a good solution. “If you look at history, the settlement for less when more was the just settlement always leaves the next generation in a much worse condition,” she said. In addition to not providing land, Trask said there are other criticisms, not the least of which is that OHA is only fighting for its own existence, not for the Hawaiian people. “They say they support sovereignty, but they really don’t. They support extension of their own lifespan,” she said. Another criticism is that the bill would settle all Hawaiian claims for about $59 million, with no guarantee that Hawaiian entitlements would be protected. Dr. Baron Ching is a physician practicing on Oahu. He supports Hawaii returning to complete sovereignty and said the Akaka Bill is really about the United States getting clear title to Hawaiian lands, without guaranteeing any Hawaiian entitlements. “The United States has never established legal title to two million acres of Hawaiian land,” said Ching. He said entitlements are not specifically protected in the Akaka Bill. “You show me where Hawaiian entitlements are guaranteed and I’ll give you $100,” said Ching. Critics also point to the federal government’s mismanagement of billions of dollars of Indian money, which has sparked a federal lawsuit. Isaac Harp is a Native Hawaiian activist who opposes the Akaka Bill. He said Hawaiians had their own country, recognized in international law, before the United States overthrew Queen Liliuokalani. He advocates a complete return to independence for Hawaii. “The whole process of statehood was illegal and I believe that sets the stage for Hawaiians to reclaim our nation, in full, intact and for the United States to provide reparations for the damage they have caused on our nation,” he said. Harp said Native Hawaiians are not Native Americans, that they were a sovereign nation and should return to being a sovereign nation. He said the U.S. should not deal with Hawaiian people through the Department of the Interior, as is called for under the Akaka Bill, but rather through the State Department. “I believe if we have any relationship with the United State, it must be at an actual nation to nation level with the State Department, which is the only lawful department within the United States that can conduct nation to nation relations with other countries,” he said. One of the more visible independence groups on Maui has been the Reinstated Hawaiian Government. They have held regular vigils on County property such as the Haiku Community Center, throughout the state. They held a convention in 2000 and elected 24 members to a House of Nobles and 24 to a House of Representatives. They elected a Prime Minister, Henry Noa, a former teacher on Oahu. They held another election in November and elected Noa to his second four-year term. “We’re for full on independence, with the Americans for allies,” said Noa. There are 24 districts to the Reinstated Hawaiian Government throughout Hawaii, including five on Maui and one on Molokai. Noa said the group has 3,000 members, including about 600 on Maui. He said there was a 65 percent turnout for the last election. In addition, the Reinstated Hawaiian Government isn’t limited to Native Hawaiians. NonHawaiian members can become citizens. There are plenty of critics of Hawaiian political groups, even among Native Hawaiians. Some say the Reinstated Hawaiian Government is too secretive, with Noa controlling access to information on a “need to know” basis. OHA is criticized for trying to perpetuate its own existence. Ka Lahui, the group Trask belongs to, has taken heat from some for allegedly settling for less than full independence, while others deride it for being too divisive. But it is clear the Hawaiian sovereignty movement is a serious political movement and such movements are not neat and tidy. They reflect a people’s diverse reaction to oppression. In fact, the criticisms are evidence that the movement is authentic and progressing. People should not view even the backlash evidenced by the different lawsuits as signs of anything but progress, said Kealoha Pisciotta of the Big Island. “I believe that the legal challenges and the problems that we are currently facing are actually knee-jerk response and knee-jerk reactions to the Native Hawaiian people’s success and not their failure,” she said. “We’ve come very far. We have to recognize that we were colonized and that we are de-colonizing ourselves. I think we should feel very good about where we are and just keep holomua, just keep going forward.” MTW

Dollie’s Pub & Café
Now other people have told us the rest of their food is great, too. They have sandwiches, salads and some other crap we’ve never tried because we just never tire of their lunch special. It’s a side salad with an individual-sized pizza for a mere $6.95. Can you believe that? Six dollars and 95 American!

Go for the pizza, stay for the pizza Dollies Pub & Café always makes us think of Sacramento. Boisterous people, good pizza and cheap beer that creates an atmosphere so comfortably casual and entertaining we get the feeling we’re back at Uncle Norm’s barbeque with all his crazy but good-natured friends and relatives—Eddie, Norm Jr., Skip, even Toothless Bob. Yeah, Toothless Bob. What happened to Bob just wasn’t right. Now we’re the first to agree there’s no reason an 80plus year-old-man should be handling dynamite, but is federal prison really the solution? Sure, it was awful what happened at that glass blowing factory and all… But we digress. Remember Cheers!? Dollie’s is a just like that, except it’s not underground and the bartender doesn’t wear a scary toupee. Oh, and the place isn’t in Boston, it’s in Kahana. Or is it Honokowai? We always get those two mixed up. Anyway, it’s over by S Turns. You can’t miss it. Dollie’s is the best Pizza and Beer Joint on Maui. The very best. It’s so good we capitalized the words “Pizza,” “Beer” and “Joint.” Well, Pizza and Beer more than Joint. But you get the idea.
Now if you’re thinking this is one of those reviews where we drool about their “appetizers” that are “coconut-crusted” or “mac-crusted” and talk a lot about their “menu,” forget it. All we’ve ever had at Dollie’s was pizza and beer, because that’s the kind of place it is. The pizza is awesome, with as many combinations as you can dream up. It’s the perfect balance of crust, sauce and cheese. In fact, you can choose which sauce you prefer between traditional tomato, tangy fresh pesto or a back-to-the-basics olive oil and garlic.
There’s also plenty of, oh, what do those food guys always call it—atmosphere!— to distract you. Seriously, the place is practically wall-to-wall in televisions, which means it’s THE spot to hang out and watch sports. Ahhh… sports. We were there with friends one afternoon—mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives and Bass Ale, if we recall correctly—and it was great. They could watch the big Miami Dolphins game because they were from Florida or something and we could relax while our beloved Los Angeles Lakers stomped all over some other team. Think it
was Seattle. Either that or Golden State. No, it was definitely Golden State. Had to be. Of course it was! No question. It might have been Memphis. But who cares. Dollie’s is a warm, comfortable place—a little divey, but not too much— where you’ll find a lot of good locals. For those who don’t really watch sports Dollie’s has plenty of good folks to watch. You know what? There actually was one time when we didn’t have pizza and beer. We forgot about it earlier because we all d o w n e d Patrón shots shortly thereafter, making the whole evening just a little bit hazy. Anyway, we had this wonderful, steaming bowl of spinach dip, which we ladled onto handfuls of chips and garlic bread. Sooooo goooooood. Made us think of our old neighbor Mr. Montunas, back when we lived over by the Howard Johnson’s. Oh God, what a dip he was. But we digress. Again. Should you find yourself needing to freshen up after your pizza and beer, be sure to check out their fine restroom facilities. The men’s room is a men’s room, but over in the ladies’ room, Dollie’s has been kind enough to supply all of your emergency beauty equipment. There’s a plate on the sink with an assortment of lotions and hair products—so thoughtful! Because aside from being the best Pizza and Beer Joint on Maui, that’s also the kind of place Dollie’s is. Dollie’s Pub & Café is located at 4310 L. Honoapiilani Rd. Lahaina. They are open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight. Call 669-0266 for pizza to go or picnic lunches. MTW

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT
BY JOE GATTO
Plate Spinning And Knife Throwing The New Shanghai Circus defies the imagination Live from Branson, Missouri comes the New Shanghai Circus! That’s right, Branson, Missouri—America’s center for blue-hair entertainment—where they share a venue with Wayne Newton and Ed McMahon. For the last two years, the New Shanghai Circus has been doing daily acrobatic and magic shows there from April through December, with the rest of the year spent on the road. They really did originate in Shanghai, China. In the past 40 years, the Shanghai Magic Troupe carried on the fine traditions of Chinese folk arts. It performs year round in Shanghai while the New Shanghai Circus travels. In the spring of 1999, the New Shanghai Circus received an invitation to perform in the New Victory Theater on Broadway. This record-breaking show won the title “Best Foreign Production on Broadway” for the troupe that year. Their impressive skills come from a 2,500-year-old tradition, developed from the ancient Chinese harvest festivals. Back then, craftsmen and farmers didn’t have TV and video games, but they did learn how to do some really cool stuff with their bodies. With nothing to do over the long winter, they spent their time improving their societal positions by becoming acrobats. At the time of the lunar new year, people would show off their skills by performing fun and exciting feats of daring and strength using household tools and common items— skills like plate spinning, knife throwing and balancing benches on the head. As skills developed, they passed them down from generation to generation to become the amazing acts that can be seen today. Nowadays, there remain only a few brothers and sisters of the old, famous acrobatic families. They have organized China’s traditional entertainment into professional acrobatic troupes with formal training academies. Young children are carefully selected to train in a grueling seven-year program. The

average age for aspiring acrobats is usually six to eight years old. Training is extremely difficult, requiring many hardships and sacrifices, and is done in a boarding school where all the students live together. Here the core skills of stretching, handstands, tumbling and dance are taught. This is where they learn tricks like keeping eight or more plates spinning on long sticks while bending backward off a precarious perch to pluck a flower with the teeth. Or they’ll do a bike trick that Evil Knievel couldn’t top. One guy can ride a unicycle while balancing a half dozen bowls on his head, then puts one of the bowls on his foot while pedaling, then tosses it into a bowl on his head and does the same with the other five. Zany hula hoop antics include a girl who spins six rings around her waist, separates one from the other and eventually has them all spinning from arms, legs and midriff. China has a population of well over a billion people. It is full of sweatshops and dangerous fireworks factories. And this acrobat school. How many children get injured each year trying to learn how to become the girl who gets to perform in Branson plucking flowers with her teeth from precipices or falling headlong from straps suspended from the lofty reaches of the theater? Still, it is great entertainment. Those little kids probably learn how to focus their chi so that they are immune to such disasters and they must be having much more fun at school than American kids. No Seigfried and Roy here, this is a one of a kind circus spectacle that PT Barnum could be proud of. The New Shanghai Circus is full of exotic flavor and hard to imagine derring-do. Chinese theatrics, intense music, humor and elaborate stage designs reflecting fascinating Asian scenes compliment even further this extravaganza. The New Shanghai Circus takes place at the Castle Theater in the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. and on Sat. Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $22, $16, and $10 and can be purchased at the MACC box office or by phone at 242-7469. MTW

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY
Confederates In Transylvania Anthony Minghella Loses The Civil War Only Renee Zellweger maintains a Southern accent in this laughable attempt by director Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) at filming Charles Frazier’s love story set amidst the turmoil of the Civil War. Zellweger acts circles around Nicole Kidman, who plays a lovelorn woman-in-waiting to Jude Law’s wounded AWOL Confederate soldier. There’s hardly a believable character to be
Cold Mountain
★★★★★
Nicole Kidman and Jude Law Cold Mountain is made up of wartime vignettes that pronounce the futility of the Confederacy and its obsession with hunting down and murdering its own deserters. Minghella exerts the foregone ethical struggle against slavery with little acknowledgment to the black people who made up a large part of the South’s population during the war. We briefly see one group of fleeing blacks cross paths with Inman on a rural road before they are slaughtered by a group of Confederate soldiers who give chase to Inman through a nearby cornfield. Soon thereafter, Inman rescues an unconscious black woman just before a white town minister (Philip Seymour Hoffman) drowns her because she is carrying his child. But rather than concerning himself with help-
ing the girl escape, Inman attempts to insure the minister’s demise by leaving him tied up in public with a note in his mouth describing his sins. As a Confederate protagonist, Inman is a deserter with an agenda to judge and execute. But the cruel wartime atrocities that we witness are kept at a safe thematic distance by the promise of romanticized love that Ada and Inman share from afar. Their childish love affair is given flashes of perspective by Ruby (Zellweger) with snide but honest comments that interrupt the pretentious sentimentality on hand. The movie never rises above Ruby’s indomitable spirit that cares none for money and even less for pretense. It’s a charge that Zellweger claims with fearless aplomb and a fiery passion that spits in the face of Minghella’s crock. Rated R 155 mins. MTW

found as iconic actors give contrived performances that fall as flat as their wretched accents. While Zellweger (Ruby) errs on the side of caricature as a drifter who helps Ada (Kidman) with her dilapidated farm, she chews up language and scenery like a seasoned pro. Law (Inman) makes a strong showing in spite of his paltry Southern diction and Minghella’s heavy-handed direction. Filmed in Romania, Minghella’s version of the war torn South is about as a far from the Blue
Ridge Mountains as Virginia is to the Transylvanian Alps. It’s a shock to the system when Kidman first enters the movie to be introduced to Inman, the carpenter who will fill her thoughts for the length of the story. As the privileged daughter of an aging missionary (played by Sutherland), Kidman is hopelessly lost in a role that consumes her talents like an egg in the mouth of a whale. When a neighbor urges Ada to approach Inman as he hammers away at a wooden structure, Kidman barely hesitates before offering him a glass of cider and pressuring the shy man for more attention than he’s willing to give. Anyone from the South will immediately detect this determinedly Yankee take on Southern manners as missing the barn rather than the bull’s-eye. Problematic too is the film’s awkward plotting that opens the movie with a battle sequence that seems to be a conventional ending tableau that the unfolding story will double back on. But shortly thereafter, another similar battle sequence once again promises the certain death of Inman before sending the wounded character into the wilderness in search of his true love Ada.

This profound historical, spiritual and educational film, that includes appearances by H.H. The Dalai Lama will someday be the last remnant of these amazing practitioners. Since the invasion of Tibet over 50 years ago, China has systematically destroyed the Tibetan culture. One of the most profound losses is the tradition of the great master yogis. The entire system which supported these fascinating mind masters has been inexorably eliminated. In order to record these mystical practitioners for posterity, the filmmakers were given permission to film heretofore secret demonstrations and to conduct interviews on subject matter rarely discussed. "Amazing in its Insight into Yogic Traditions and Arcane Pracitces" enthused Yoga Journal. Rated PG. 89 min.

Are You ExSpearienced?
Return of My King
Friday, 5 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Amphitheater
Lord of the Rings 3, check showtimes, p. 19
“An exSpearience is part, booty shaking funk jam session, part soul deliverance, part cosmic transformation, and part social activism assembly, all rolled into one sweaty, sexy, raucous good time” (from www.spearheadvibrations.com). Michael Franti and Spearhead are making their first Hawaii appearance right here on Maui along with special guest DJ Logic. You might still be able to buy $25 tickets online at www.hulatickets.com or all Maui Tacos locations, Request Records, Groove 2 Music in Lahaina, and the Wine Corner or The Enchantress in Paia. And if you’ve talked with anyone who’s seen Spearhead live, you too will not be able to deny yourself the “exSpearience.”
When I went to see this final Lord of the Rings epic, The Return of the King, I was prepared for its greatness…all daunting three-and-a-half hours of it. Well, actually my movie companion illicitly brought along some medieval fare to tide us over—crusty bread, dried fruit and fresh feta—and that really helped. Not that I condone this highly uncondonable behavior or anything— you’ll get in big, big trouble— it did certainly help the palpitations I felt during all the bloody battles and thrilling suspense. Plus it was nice to have some grub in my mouth to prevent all the heavy sighing I was doing whenever Aragorn was on the screen. But anyway, this third in the epic trilogy is everything you would expect it to be—including lengthy—and as long as you come prepared, you know, mentally for it, you will think like I do—that it’s the best film of all time! No joke.

New Year’s Resolutions
Everything Is Closer Than You Think
How about starting today, through the rest of the year
Friday, 10 p.m. at Casanova
We all know the drill: It’s the New Year, so it’s time we all have to resolve to correct or at least improve some weak aspect to our character. “I’m going to lose weight,” “I’ll go to the gym more often” and “I’m going to eat more prunes” are popular, but stale. Why not just cut to the chase with the simple but honest “I resolve to make myself an even more desirable human being.” Isn’t that what resolutions are all about, anyway—exercising, eating right: aren’t they just half-assed efforts to get more attention from the opposite sex? UPCOUNTRY MAUI
“THE JOKE’S ON YOU” 1985 saw the birth of Excel, a Los Angeles based band who refer to their sound as “Power-Grinding Hardcore.” Though often lumped together with Suicidal Tendencies and the Venice Beach skate-punk scene (which isn’t a bad thing), Excel tried to distinguish themselves somewhat with a unique brand of heavy music. Combining the choppy riffs of metal acts like Metallica and the lyrical disillusionment and angst of punk acts like Minor Threat, Excel was able to achieve crossover success, appealing to both metal heads and punks alike. This second record from Excel displays some growth and polish from their indie debut Split Image, although they retain the core sound and feel that hooked me initially. I was lucky enough to meet the band’s manager while I was bartending at Hula Grill one night. He noticed the Excel logo I had scrawled on the stupid required beach-boy hat I was wearing and asked if I was a fan. Needless to say, I immediately comp-ed his bar tab and started shouting out various Excel lyrics. Well, sure enough my Aloha and stiff drinks were rewarded later in the mail with Excel t-shirts, stickers and rare, live video from their brief run. Although these guys never “made it big,” that’s okay ‘cause it’s more punk rock that way! —Rotten Records 1989/2001 [SPIKE FUQUA]

This collection of classic and modern French music transports the listener to the romantic streets and cafes of Paris. Forget “freedom fries” and anti-French nonsense and get into these tunes inspired by classic chanson, gypsy jazz and musette. Groups like Paris Combo rejuvenate pre-war music and are kind of like a French version of Squirrel Nut Zippers. Serge Gainsbourg was a key figure in French music and reflects the multi-cultural influences prevalent in Paris that he embraced and made his own. His compositions have been very controversial and influential—“Marilou Sous la Neige” shows what a unique voice he had. Female vocalists like Barbara and Enzo Enzo just sound so sexy singing in French, backed by jazzy ensembles and sophisticated, but simple melodies. Other classic stars like Georges Brassens appear along with quirky, fun newcomers like Mathieu Boogaerts, who comes through with the disc’s best song, “Ondulé.” —Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

I used to date a girl named Tosca. She was this super-cool, hella cute, half Chinese, half Anglo-Haole girl. Although she was Chinese, she never played joke. Not even half joke. She told me that she was named after an opera. I hate opera. What I hate more is the reason why I broke up with Tosca. I got back with my ex. I know, I’m a jackass, but I’m sure you’ve done some stupid shit in your life. Relationships suck. Suzuki isn’t opera or an ex-girlfriend and is definitely not a relationship. It’s some decent, but slightly lethargic acid jazz. If you like acid, or jazz, or acid jazz, you might be down with a few doses. —Studio K7 [$AYFOO]

“THE ART OF BALANCE” MTV sucks ass, but at least they had the sense enough to bring Headbangers Ball back. MTV2 is the new home for this metalvideo showcase and they actually have a host—Hatebreed’s singer Jamey Jasta—that knows what the fuck is going on. I used to stay up late and put up with Ricky Rachman’s retarded commentary just to catch the latest videos from bands like Anthrax or Sepultura. But thanks to the newly resurrected Headbangers Ball, bands like Shadows Fall are able to get their music out to this new generation of elbow-swinging thrashers. The Art Of Balance is the third record from Shadows Fall and their sound recalls the late ‘80s Bay Area metal scene made famous by Cliff Burton-Metallica, Testament, Exodus and Forbidden, to name a few. This record kicks ass from the first song to the last when they pay tribute to Pink Floyd by faithfully covering “Welcome To The Machine”—it’s done so well I checked to see if Dave Gilmore had lent his vocals to the track. Shadows Fall are currently on the road with Lamb Of God promoting “MTV2 Headbangers Ball The Record/Tour” and somebody needs to make a call and bring that shit over here!!! —Century Media Records 2002 [SPIKE FUQUA]

THE GRID
BY KOZMIC KEV
ARIES: The New Year gives you something to sink your teeth into. This year’s theme is productive increase. Think in terms of services that reflect your values. The full moon on the 7th brings work versus family issues to a head. Even you can be sensitive. TAURUS: Lunar implications spell out a grand year for Taurus. Peace making can be a slow process. Do what you can to inspire trust. Risk taking is bound to go better than you initially thought. The full moon brings a good excuse for getting together with friends. GEMINI: Red hot passion in the winter is your backwards style. What you owe and who you know is influencing your subconscious. Family and loved ones are the big focus for 2004. The full moon opens up economic opportunities that you felt were long gone. CANCER: The full moon in Cancer on the 7th is your spotlight and soapbox. You’ll do whatever the mood dictates. If you need help or partners for a project, now is the time to start recruiting. 2004 brings new ways to get your message across. LEO: Roll out the royal red with the working class blue. You are set to win with mass appeal. Snobbery will be your downfall. Inclusive attitudes hold the best odds for success. The full moon reveals the karma of your parents as well as your own subconscious issues. VIRGO: People like you will go everywhere during 2004. Personal growth will be where most of the hard stuff lies. Otherwise expect to do better. Luck is with you. The full moon makes a party a hard thing to resist. You feel free and happy among friends. LIBRA: New Year’s will be a time to deepen your love. 2004 will take you to a better sense of the spiritual. Find out the things that make you feel holy or reverent. You’ll probably find out that they’re not things at all. The full moon stirs the pot at your job. SCORPIO: Romance is on the wing, as New Year’s Eve party favors and leftover mistletoe get mixed-up. People that provide human services are sexy to you. Compassion is number one to you and your friends in 2004. The full moon grants you the key to something you thought was locked. SAGITTARIUS: The joker and gambler of the zodiac will need to perfect its cover in 2004. After the blow of your ego crushed is over, you realize you’re on top of your game. People notice you. You take creative risks. The full moon adds a dash of sex appeal. CAPRICORN: A genuinely creative and adventurous year awaits you. Love will be richer in 2004. Think of good business as making a good partnership. The full moon makes for polite romance. Travel is in the picture. Exercise at home. AQUARIUS: You gloat yet remain calm while others run for cover. You will work your ass off in 2004 and will have to be content with modest gains, which is a hell of a lot better than modest losses. The full moon urges you to pay attention to health issues. PISCES: Rebellion, prophecy and genius will be your key words for 2004. Love, peace and fairness are more than just a dream to you. The full moon assures your position on the throne of love. Get together with smart people.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
It Was The Best Of Nights, It Was The Worst Of Nights All right, I’ll just go ahead and say it: Christmas this year really sucked for me. Let’s be honest, it’s weird to see holiday décor depicting snowflakes, reindeer and Santa Claus in a flannel red suit with fur trim while we’re living on a tropical island. It’s also sometimes really tough to be so many miles away from family and pretend to celebrate in togetherness and unconditional love with people who don’t even know my parents and never saw me all awkward at 15 in my shaved head and combat boots… Hey, wait a minute, what am I complaining about again? Oh yeah, well what I’m really trying to say is that nobody freaking called me on Christmas, okay?! Aside from that, I sincerely hope that you all had a lovely holiday and that you got everything you wanted because you chose to go the “Nice” route all year. But on the “Naughty” side of things, have you been to the newest club in Lahaina— Breakwater—yet? Not only is it all swanked out with low-lighting and comfy couches, a newly renovated sound system and an exciting late night entertainment lineup for the coming months, but more importantly, it has a hot little sweetheart of an owner, Leslie, who really knows how to have fun—although she can’t seem to drink me under the table. But really, who can? There’s also a sexy bartender who does all those fancy flipping bottle tricks that are so impressive to drunk chicks and likes to make concoctions of unnatural colors that encourage the most hellacious hangovers. His name is Will but I’ll call him Satan for all intents and purposes. So after a night of dancing and drinking on Friday, the next day was a bit of a waste. Eventually I decided to rally out to the FirstLight film festival and see Big Fish, which was a fantastic Tim Burton movie that made me laugh and cry and think—much like most of those blasted Barry Rivers-inducted movies. But enough of that feelgood-ness, for I was off to the bar! I stopped at Mañana Garage to have a fabulous Matador margarita. But then I had to olé my way out of there because they were closing and we all know how annoying it is to have that last lingering customer thinking she can leisurely get all liquored up and pretentiously talk about the fantastic film she just saw that made her laugh…and cry… and drink. Um, I mean think. I figured I would stop at the Sandbar in Paia to check out their scene as I thought Anastasia of the Voodoo Suns would be playing—I think she has an amazing voice. But when I walked in, the music was louder and meaner than I had anticipated. That’s because a large crowd of burly-but-cute, tattooed and black-bedecked folk were rocking out to Anesthesia—an old school metal band from Kihei. They sounded better than ever! On Monday, my “Sugar Shack” housemates and I had lofty ambitions. First, we were supposed to go see Sylvia at the MACC. But for some reason, midway through changing, as we decided to all wear the same hue, thus delaying our departure time and missing the movie. Next, we were going to check out the new Motorcycle Café in Kihei that I heard was decorated in everything motorcycle, which I knew would greatly please my Jen, who wants nothing more than to meet a “Cool Rider.” Do you remember that song from Grease 2? You know, the one where Michelle Pfeiffer is dancing on a ladder in a black pleather jacket? Yeah, Jen knows that one by heart. She’s really quite good. But we got to Kihei too late and the place was closed. Though we did reach Hapa’s in time to check out the throbbing mass of Willie K fans. The girls were pleased to be out of Lahaina for the moment and there were so many new faces— and so much fresh meat, er, cute boys to flirt with. While Jen stepped to the floor with her charming 80-year-old dance partner, and Sonja chatted up with a hottie from New Zealand that kinda looked like Samantha’s hunky boyfriend on Sex In The City, I counted the remaining minutes until I, too, could be rejoicing in the simple pleasures of our Kihei ritual: an Ultimate Cheeseburger from Jack In The Box.
