Mahalo for Don Gronning’s Jan. 1 piece on Hawaii’s sovereignty movement (“Goodbye Hawaii?”), which affects everyone in the islands. One point mentioned briefly which I think deserves more emphasis is the role of race in the different options being considered. There is a somewhat counterintuitive fact that is crucially important to understand: while independence is a seemingly more radical solution, pretty much all its major advocates support an inclusive government with naturalization and citizenship open to people of all races, while the seemingly more moderate pseudo-sovereign model of federal recognition is racially divisive. This is understandable when you think about Hawaiian history. The Hawaiian Kingdom was a multiracial country with naturalized citizens of many backgrounds enjoying full political rights, while all of the racially-based programs—designed to make up for the impact of the illegal overthrow and occupation—were actually created by the federal and state governments. I would also like to invite your readers who are interested in staying up on the latest developments in the movement to visit my weblog, updated daily with links to news articles and current events. It is not affiliated with any particular group, and is the most comprehensive compilation of current issues on the subject of Hawaii’s sovereignty anywhere on the Web: www.HawaiianKingdom.info. -Scott Crawford, Hana
BEST JOB APPLICATION EVER To the editors at the Maui Time Weekly who are relentlessly seeking new stories in Lahaina. I’m tired of you coming to our table and hitting us up for interviews and story material. “Hey, give me 20 minutes so I can get this interview, it’ll be a quality story.” Yeah, right. I’ve seldom seen a quality story in the Maui Time Weekly. But don’t get me wrong, your paper is interesting enough
for me to keep picking it up whenever I see it at the store. After all, the Da Kine Calendar keeps me in the know and there are plenty of advertisements to glance at. Sometimes there are even coupons. So as long as I need to know where music is playing and when happy hour is, I’ll be reading your paper. But for some reason I believe that a newspaper should be more than a few shakas and surf reports. What the Maui Time Weekly needs, in my humble opinion, is an editor who will give the readers the whole story. Someone who makes the most of an assignment, who digs up dirt to bring readers the goods. My other job is on a farm, so these aren’t just lofty ideals; it’s more of a daily practice. Questions that address social change and cultural preservation on a local level, the effects of land development on Maui and preemptive approaches to ecological degradation just might prove more stimulating than a cool buzz and some tasty wastes. Perhaps the waves will always prevail, but I just feel that the Maui Time Weekly merely skims the surface on local issues and fails to go in depth. I urge the editors to open up a spot for someone new to dive into. -Name Deleted The Editor responds: You work on a farm?! That is so cool. Is it like the farm in Babe? Or is more like the one in Field of Dreams, with a really great baseball park? You know, we here at Maui Time support farms in all their forms. Except for those giant farms that crush the little guy and force all the animals to live in dark coops. Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage. Send your letters to the editor via e-mail (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A7278, Lahaina, HI 96761) or fax (808661-0446). Visit our website at www.mauitime.com. Letters will be edited for clarity and length. All correspondence must include your full name, home town and contact info.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Why did you have to go and poison that little girl’s baby luau with your racism and hatred? Your jokes aren’t funny, your puns aren’t clever, your social commentary is sophomoric and your racist routine is SO 10 years ago. If you want material to satirize, why don’t you look at the news! Sure, the poi you made was ono, but your stand-up routine turned many stomachs. Why couldn’t you just have been funny? If only it had been funny, I’d have laughed in spite of the content. But instead it was just stupid, and that’s what was really offensive. Insult your own guests next time, not someone else’s.

The Need For Peace And how education can bring it “Peace is not only absence of war, when there are no battles and no fighting,” said Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. “Peace is also having enough to eat, living in a decent house and respecting one another.” Menchu Tum’s life embodies the essence of peace studies rooted in human rights and the need to instill this understanding in our young. An indigenous Mayan woman who was a one-time domestic servant and illiterate coffee-picker, Menchu Tum is one of the moral architects of world peace galvanizing governments to respect people and the planet. Education is in dire need of a catalyst for igniting the fire of curiosity and creativity in the minds of our students. I know—I’m a teacher. One possibility is the addition of a new subject called peace studies in the cirriculum. Peace studies will change the purpose of school as well as the structure that delivers the service of a quality education. Peace education combines philosophy and practice together. The foundation of
peace studies focuses on equality, dignity, conflict prevention and resolution, cultural diversity, gender justice, environmental protection, human rights and futures studies. The basis for the peace education can transform our classrooms, schools, community, country and the global civil society. The primary principle would be to teach students to be citizens with a conscience and commitment to humanity. The goal is simple: that the student recognizes a positive role as an agent of change and realizes the full potential to participate in daily decision-making. Consequently, he or she would then live with concern for the fate of the earth and believe in the ability and personal power to take action. Peace education provides life skills for conflict prevention and resolution in the face of challenges. Through discussion and dialogue in dynamic democratic models of decisionmaking, every child realizes his or her ability to enact ideas into initiatives that contribute to a culture of peace. This would span from our basic family structure to new models of global governance.
This would sweep away our lackluster participation of classroom conversation and the dithering, dilapidated, we-can-still-vote-nextyear-if-it’s-not-raining democracy, clearing the space for vivacious voices expressing universal values. Imagine a place where all children and citizens believe they have a valuable contribution to make. The current sense of hopelessness and despair can be replaced with hope, aweinspiring advocacy and possibilities for peace. This would replace rule of raw power,
Children begin with learning the Convention on the Rights of the Child and implementing it into daily childhood. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights governs later years of education and daily life. ization of all. Education becomes alive with meaning—after all, life is a quest for equality and empowerment. When we study peace from this perspective, we ask questions as youth as to why the world is the way we find it. We seek solutions in our careers through service to humanity and the earth to enhance our world. Peace studies offers and nurtures the nonviolent means for all people to be peacemakers. MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, JAN. 5 Just found out a big, important congressional election is coming up. I learned this not from a calendar or by being “informed,” as the kids these days say, but from my congressman, Ed Case (D, All Hawaii sans Honolulu). He told me, not through any “conversation,” but by sending me a fullcolor 2003 Congressional Report. Since this report “was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense,” and since I’m more or less a taxpayer, I thought it prudent to read it. Seems Case considers his opposition to “budget busting” spending increases is one of the “highlights” of his first year in office. Yet nearly a dozen of the other highlights involve some sort of federal spending increase: “Advocated full funding of the federal No Child Left Behind and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act,” “increased federal funding for war on ice,” “Sought funding for road/traffic/transportation projects statewide” and the always popular “Supported/obtained federal assistance for a variety of community needs.” Way to bring home the bacon, Ed!… Speaking of federal spending, remember a few years ago when President Bill Clinton said “the era of big government is over?” Someone should tell our federal government. According to a great rundown today from the Associated Press, total federal spending has ballooned 23.7 percent from 2002 to 2004. During the same period, discretionary spending—that which requires actual White House and congressional approval—has risen 10 and a half percent. All under George W. Bush! A Republican! A guy who ostensibly believes in “limited government!” If Dubya’s busting the budget, what chance does a little old Dem like Case have?
TUESDAY, JAN. 6 He’s doing it again. You know, that thing
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
he does when he says everything’s cool and then he goes and does what he says he wouldn’t do. Follow? If not, it’s because I don’t either. I’m speaking, of course, of County Council Chair Dain Kane. At this morning’s council meeting he once again moved to wrestle the proposed Makena Resort development away from councilmember Wayne Nishiki’s Planning and Land Use Committee, where it’s been pickling for eons. The last time this happened was a few months ago, when the two councilmembers quietly settled the matter outside the public chamber. Or thought they did. Anyway, this is why doing stuff behind closed doors rarely works. So today, Kane and Nishiki decided to try to reconcile their differences the way most people do—by yelling at each other in public. Nishiki began with a right cross to Kane, saying his little maneuver to take Makena away from him “breeds contempt for government.” Kane ducked, then jabbed a couple times with a little warning to stay on the subject at hand. Nishiki weathered the blows nicely, then gave Kane the old give-me-a-chance-to-speak. Kane, never one to back away from a good sparring session, said Nishiki was out of order and brought down his gavel, ending the round with no clear knock-out. For those new to this, it’s called various things: “fun,” “refreshing” and even “Democracy.” And with the Makena fight far from over, we can expect some good future bouts.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 7 Okay, this newspaper thievery has gotten completely out of control. First someone swiped a few stacks of the Maui Weekly. Then they started grabbing Maui News boxes. And that was all fine and funny, but now it’s gotten much, much worse. It’s gotten worse because it’s happened to us. That’s right, some jerk’s been stealing our papers. OUR Maui News papers. Don’t they know I need those papers? What, you expect me to do all my own work? To not feed off the labor of others? What do you think this is, the Washington Post?… Uh oh. Comedian Kaui

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Hill (aka Bu La’ia, the guy who does all those kick-ass Maui Tacos commercials) suddenly started calling the media saying he’s being held against his will at the hospital in Wailuku. This isn’t good, considering Hill’s previous problems with the law—there are actually “terroristic” charges pending against him from an incident in November when he allegedly attacked an animal control officer with a pick-ax. Somehow, I don’t think this is the last we’re gonna hear of this.
Oahu—or as I now call it, Nazi Germany— confiscating all of the above, but Maui’s police said they’re probably not going to be following suit anytime soon. Okay, let’s calm down a moment. Water pipes, sure, but butane lighters? Scales? What’s next, busting down the door at the post office? Doesn’t Washington have something better to do, like finding nuclear weapons in Baghdad?
FRIDAY, JAN. 9 Nobody snagged my issue of the Lahaina News, so I guess that’ll have to suffice for today. Oh, this is good: seems land developers Kent Smith, Peter Martin and Jim Riley didn’t waste any time repackaging their enormously unpopular Pu’unoa Village subdivision as the new and improved and more affordable than ever before. Maybe even the most affordableist homes ever. Of course, the Three Wise Men still want to build their tiny, tiny houses just south of Lahaina Town in an area totally unsuited to any residential construction whatsoever. Sure, already rotten traffic would get a lot worse, but the Hawaiian families who live just up the hill are still pushing their land-ownership claim. Shouldn’t we hear them out first?… At noon today, Governor Linda Lingle decreed that the Hawaii Homeland Advisory System Threat Condition (HHASTC to its friends) go to “YELLOW ALERT STATUS.” Acknowledged. Yellow Alert. What does that mean, again? I mean, we go from Yellow to Orange and then back to Yellow and then Orange again so often you’d think someone in the Pentagon was doing it just to remember what color tie to wear that week. But it’s the same as Star Trek right? Now I forget, was Yellow Alert when Captain Kirk raised the shields or was it when he armed the photon torpedoes? This War on Terror thing is so confusing.
THURSDAY, JAN. 8 There’s a big drug bust story in Maui News, but you’d never know it the way they buried it on Page A5. Looks like the Fed has brought the hammer down on shops carrying drug paraphernalia—you know, stuff like glass and water pipes, butane lighters and scales. As an added bonus, possessing such items is a federal offense, bringing one to three years in the Big House and a fine up to $25,000. Federal agents busted 10 shops on
SATURDAY, JAN. 10 Uh oh again. It’s so sad what happened to Bu La’ia. Guy got himself arrested yesterday. Yeah, again. This time Maui Police officers went and jailed him for alleged abuse against, as the Maui News put it, “a girlfriend.” Seems there was an anonymous tip he was wandering around in front of the Lahaina library on Front St. Guy hanging out in front of a library? What’s not suspicious about that? MTW

In December, the 200 employees at SAS Shoemakers in Pittsfield, Mass., and the 270 workers at Stine Seed Co. in Adel, Iowa, were each given Christmas bonuses of $1,000 for every year of service to the company. In other bonus news, Tower Automotive of Traverse City, Mich., gave employees $15 Thanksgiving grocery gift cards, but then withheld $5.51 of that as federal and state income tax, and Air Canada gave coupons to 100 of its best-performing customer-service personnel, redeemable at restaurants owned by its in-flight food service contractor, worth C$5.00 (US$3.75).
MORE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT
November, the judge in Parramatta, Australia, detected the clumsy nature of DeMarco’s work and fined him another A$1,000 on top of the A$246 in tickets (about US$880).
RECENT NAMES IN THE NEWS Delegates of French “villages of lyric or burlesque names” formed an association in October as sort of a promotional and support group made necessary because so many visitors laugh at the towns’ names. Among them are villages whose names, translated into English, are beautiful mad, cuckold hill, filthy pig, my bottom, eat onions, very stupid and double-ass, as well as several names that are merely inexplicable.
UPDATE
Last month, Putnam County, N.Y., passed a law to further the aims of the federal Americans With Disabilities Act by permitting shoppers in wheelchairs to bring their service monkeys into stores. (Legislator Sam Oliverio said he didn’t know of any service monkeys in use but wanted to be ready.) And in July, a ranch owner in San Diego County, CA, was found not guilty of cruelty for disposing of 30,000 live, “nonproductive” hens by dumping them into a wood chipper, pointing out in defense that it was basically a “standard industry practice” endorsed by a member of the animal welfare committee of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
BRIGHT IDEA To fight two speeding tickets emanating from the same police camera in a 60km per hour zone, Carlos DeMarco, 39, went to the trouble of commandeering a 70km per hour sign and affixing it to the pole underneath that very speed camera, then photographing it to show that he was not speeding. In
In November, the county attorney in Burleson, Texas, filed a misdemeanor charge against Joanne Webb for selling two vibrators, which are illegal if they are intended for “stimulation.” Although many adult stores in Texas keep the police away by posting signs calling the inventory merely “novelties,” an officer in Burleson said Webb’s are certainly “obscene” because he can tell that just by looking. Mere possession of vibrators is not illegal unless a person has six or more. Webb sells the vibrators by staging Tupperware-type sales parties (“Passion Parties”) in private homes.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE In December, Vice President Cheney led a “hunting” party to the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier, Pa., to shoot pheasants, which had been specially bred to be killed by the club’s members and guests. Cheney reportedly bagged 70 ringneck pheasants plus some captive mallard ducks, and his party killed 417 of the approximately 500 pheasants released. A Humane Society executive deplored the shoot, suggesting that clay-target shooting would be just as challenging: “This wasn’t a hunting ground. It was an open-air abattoir.”

Help The Earth Put away the grill cart John Locke knew it. Ronald McDonald knew it. And you know it. It’s a fact of life: Beef is delicious. And it doesn’t really matter what kind of beef—London Broil, Porterhouse, steak fajitas or a bacon double cheeseburger slathered in barbecue sauce—it’s all good. Of course, by “good” I mean “really, really rotten for the environment and your health.” Few doubt that beef and chicken and pork all taste great, but you know they’re slowing killing us all, right? Jim Motavalli knows. For the last 14 years he’s been editor of Norwalk, CTbased E Magazine, a bi-monthly publication dealing with all matters environmental. It bills itself as “chock full of everything the budding environmentalist needs to know, from ‘rainforests to recycling’ and from the ‘personal to the political.’” It boasts 38 “Editorial Advisors” including the venerable and passionate Ed Begley, Jr., who really was outstanding in his role as the hotel manager in Best in Show. As editor, Motavalli has written on just about all facets of modern environ-

mentalism, including the modern home as an energy waster, the clear-cutting of Maine’s forests, dumping nuclear waste at sea and the contributions women have made to environmentalism. This week he’s on Maui, courtesy of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, to give a lecture entitled “So You’re an Environmentalist; Why Are You Still Eating Meat?” The lecture has the same title as an E Magazine article he wrote a year ago. We know about Mad Cow Disease, E. Coli, Salmonella and other dreaded food-borne pathogens that have infected millions of people around the world. But the article transcended the usual health reasons for a nomeat diet, making a compelling case that vegetarianism is actually good for the environment. And naturally, being an effective writer, Motavalli included a lot of scary facts. The old pastoral family farm is a relic. Today, agri-business firms run massive feedlots and slaughterhouses. Motavalli wrote that “there are 20 billion head of livestock taking up space on the Earth, more than triple the number of people.” And that producing every pound of beef requires nearly five pounds of grain feed. Or that making a single hamburger patty consumes the same fuel burned by driving 20 miles. In fact, Motavalli wrote that “more than a third of all raw materials and fossil fuels consumed in the U.S. are used
Quit shoving! in animal production.” And let’s not forget waste--you know, animal waste. According to Motavalli, “energy-intensive U.S. factory farms generated 1.4 billion tons of animal waste in 1996”—which amounted to more pollution dumped in the nation’s rivers and streams than “all other industrial sources combined. “The much-publicized 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska dumped 12 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound,” wrote Motavalli. “[B]ut the relatively unknown 1995 New River hog waste spill in North Carolina poured 25 million gallons of excrement and urine into the water, killing an estimated 10 to 14 million fish and closing 364,000 acres of coastal shellfishing beds.” And I’m not even going to mention
debeaking, dehorning, branding, castration, skinning or the practice of forcing animals to live on metal grates in constant darkness. Or that animals driven mad by pain frequently injure slaughterhouse workers. Motavalli even addressed the common perception that vegetarians don’t get enough protein in their diets, pointing out that soy-based meat substitutes are plentiful these days, and often provide more protein than the equivalent meat product. Of course, some people are allergic to soy. In those cases, the people are screwed. Motavalli will speak on Thurs., Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 261 S. Pu’unene Ave., Kahului. Free admission and food samples. MTW

RADIO Except for the yellow sign on the front door, you’d never know the windowless white office in the small Wailuku light industrial park was a radio station. Mana’o Radio, KEAO 91.5 on your FM dial, to be exact. Like the office building, the station’s nothing fancy—100 watt “low power” transmission, which is enough to blanket the town, Upcountry and the central valley fields but not much else. Those on the West Side or South Maui are out of luck as the transmission lacks the power to clear Haleakala or the West Maui Mountains, but can still hear the station on the internet at www.manaoradio.com. Bill Best answered the door. This was unusual because he was supposed to be on the air. “We should have a doorman with the epaulets and everything,” he said after walking me over to the control room so he could get back on the air. “That would be cool. We might later when we get the big bucks.” Of course, by “big bucks,” he probably meant something like “enough money to pay me a salary.” Every one of the few dozen jocks at the nearly two-year Mana’o Radio is a volunteer. Some only come in a couple hours a week, but others are on the air three, four hours a day. They’re a misfit bunch, to say the least. Some have been in radio for decades. Others, only as long as Mana’o’s been on the air. They may have their quirks, but they all share two qualities: a devotion to radio and a loathing of the radio industry. They work at Mana’o not for money or experience, but for creative freedom. “Since we’ve been on the air I’ve had over 4,000 people call me up asking for a slot,” said Barry Shannon, Mana’o Radio’s general manag-
er who also handles the weekday 2-5 p.m. timeslot. “It’s frustrating that I have to write so many emails and ruin their whole day. Having been there, I understand. But when people are loyal to us, I want to return it. We’ve lost only two people since we went on the air. But my hope is to pay the full-time people $1,000 a month plus insurance.” In not quite two years, Mana’o Radio has gone from a shoestring operation broadcast out of Shannon’s back bedroom to a real, professional operation. Their Wailuku offices are small, but well equipped for their needs. They even have a studio for live music shows on Sunday nights. Of course, the station lacks certain modern radio amenities. Mana’o has no automation computers, no breezy commercials and, most importantly, no playlist. The lack of the last item especially is one of the greatest reasons Shannon enjoys such a loyal staff. “The cool thing is we don’t have anyone lording over us,” said Best, who was three hours into his weekday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. show when I arrived. “There’s no scrutiny. No potentates and hierarchy.” Basically, Best and the rest of the Mana’o staff can play whatever they feel like. Nothing illustrates the range of their choices and preferences more than the CD shelves that line two of the control room’s four walls. There, Basia stands next to the Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell’s just to the right of Moby, ‘Til Tuesday is sandwiched between George Thorogood and Timbuk 3 and all share space with 18 Grateful Dead albums (“Oh, there are more in the cabinets,” said Shannon). “We play rock to blues to reggae to African music,” Best said, writing in his music log and checking times on an analog clock that says “volunteers make a difference.” “I play more sets than most people do. I’ll do a set of Grateful Dead. Or Sheryl Crow. A whole set of songs using

the word ‘God.’ I’ve been in radio for so long. I used to plan things but now it just comes out of the blue. Once Don [Lopez] played nothing but Klezmer music for three hours. It’s a little much for me, but I’m glad he can do that.” Best hails from San Francisco. Lived on a commune for 10 years. In the mid 1970s, he moved to Maui, opened the shop Faroutfits on Front St., then moved back to San Fran. Now he’s more or less back for good. “I don’t have what you call a regular job,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind it if someone was hiring guys in their mid-fifties but that ain’t happening. I don’t want a job where you have some fiefdom or some pinhead telling you what to do. We talk about freedom in this country, but I’ve worked lots of jobs and had very little freedom. My wife and I are doing all right. It’s not like I’m desperate for money. I personally feel that if you don’t need the money, don’t work. Let someone else have the job. We’re not wealthy, but we’re not hurting.” Then Best read a public service announcement for a new class in the computer program Photoshop. “Photoshop is my favorite, favorite computer program,” he said, not being the least bit facetious. Shannon said Mana’o Radio was only the 13th low power license granted in the country. Churches own most of the stations. “An act of Congress disqualified over a thousand applicants,” said Shannon, who’s worked in radio for virtually all of the last 50 years. “I have a feeling we’re one of the few professional operations.” Shannon’s wife of 14 years is Kathy Collins. Currently working for Maui County Senior Services, she’s also Mana’o Radio’s president. A former news radio jock and Honolulu TV reporter who burned out on too many dead body stories, Collins now hosts the weekday 5-8 p.m. show. “When we first applied for our license there were just the two of us,” she said. “We had a computer, maybe a couple of friends. We had no idea how well it would be received. “It never occurred to me that radio and
music would mean so much to people,” she said. “I’d thought radio was pretty much obsolete. I thought the days of people listening to the radio in their kitchens were over. Apparently they’re not.”
The station office is upstairs. There, as a small TV turned to CNN with the sound turned off runs in the corner and Mana’o news anchor—and Maui Time contributor—Don Gronning busily prepares his afternoon news report, Scott Mills sits in a chair, his legs crossed beneath him. As the morning show guy, Mills has to wake up around 4:30 in the morning. By the time he makes it to the station, it’s 5:30, a quarter to six. He first wipes down the control booth, then takes the Windex and paper towels and wipes down the floor. He goes on the air at 6 a.m. and stays until 10. He’s done that for the last year and a half. He says he’s often mistaken for a morning person. “Am I a morning person? Not at all,” the Haiku resident who bears a resemblance to Mark Harmon said. “Working here I’ve drunk more cups of coffee than in my entire life. But it’s a labor of love. It’s actually costing me money to be here. About $10 a day, depending on whether I buy lunch. And I’ve got a mortgage to pay.” Mills has a wife and two daughters, age 8 and 17. “They’re all equally high-maintenance,” he said. “I play drums. Grow fruit on my land. Do carpentry. I’m trimming trees tomorrow.” His wife is a University of Hawaii grad student who currently teaches yoga to prisoners at Maui County Correctional Center. None of them have health insurance. Yet Mills can’t imagine doing anything else. “I’m incredibly passionate about music,” said Mills, who strongly identifies with the John Cusack character in High Fidelity . “Joy is when people call and say ‘I didn’t know that! How do you know that?’ ‘I read the liner notes,’ I tell them. Most of us have done this for pay, but the

pay has been minimum wage. There’s not much difference.” Mills has worked radio since elementary school, when he got in trouble for playing DOA during lunch over the school PA system, which made a couple girls sick. “I did high school, college radio,” he said. “And a community station in Blue Hill, Maine, WERU,” where he also operated a few CD stores. And, of course, what I call a big 250 billion watt station. That was live—I can’t do automated—but I had to go by a set list.” That gig lasted a year, ending when he couldn’t stand the Guns N Roses song he had to play on the air. “Sorry folks, but I can’t continue to play that,” he said just before putting on the Clash. “I play lots of rock and roll—Sabbath, Deep Purple,” he said. “And of course Frank Zappa. You cannot forget or dismiss Frank Zappa. “But I don’t put much importance in the first musical selection of the day,” he said. “At six in the morning, it doesn’t matter that much. I don’t hit the ground running. It usually takes me a half hour, 45 minutes to get the direction I’m going. A phone call could make me change! ‘How about Rolling Stones’ when the whip comes down?’ Usually don’t get into it until 7:30. Then the show will peak around 9. Being a musician, and never really making a cent, I want to push artists that don’t have that big paycheck and who I think really deserve it.”
Around the corner from the radio station is a

small Mexican restaurant. Mana’o jock Don Lopez is seated near the door, downing a bowl of menudo. “Boy, I needed this,” he said. “Did you know menudo is the best cure for a hangover? Not that I have a hangover right now, but it’s the best cure. Better than saimin.” Lopez, who has three shows—Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to midnight, Sunday afternoons with fellow jock Sandra Lee Akaka and “Club Mana’o,” showcasing in-studio music Sunday nights from 5 p.m. to 7—has only done Mana’o Radio. “I tried a few times, but the game’s pretty tight,” he said between spoonfuls. “I always wanted to do radio, but I never got anywhere. Then mutual friends introduced me to Barry. I tried out. He was ecstatic, I was happy.” Before that, Lopez worked a bunch of jobs. He’s played in Willie K’s band for the last 18 years. He’s been a driver, cabbie and chef. Ahh… cooking. It’s hard on the hands, takes a lot of time and effort, but he’s quite adept at it. Being “born into Judaism”—but didn’t bar mitzvah until 40—exposed him to kosher cooking. Lately he’s been experimenting with kosher Mexican and local food. The tofu chorizo was a big hit with his dad, who Lopez said was convinced it was the real deal. “But it’s a pain in the ass not having regular income,” he said. “But the trade-off is worth it. Even though this is a very small piece of the world, it has an effect on people. I think we’re the first radio station that’s played Gentle Giant, Michael Stern. All these types of music people never hear. I’ve played traditional folk music from the Mongolian Steppe—a story about Ghengis Khan as a boy. I had a Hassidic Rabbi in the studio once and played Hassidic music.” Hosting the Club Mana’o show is very important to Lopez. “I really believe in the power of live music,” he said. “It doesn’t happen in the studio. My personal favorite is creating on the stage in front of people. If you’re in the right frame of reference, you can actually see the energy flowing between the musicians. It’s almost liquid. It’s that facile.” Before a show, Lopez first “clears” his mind. “That way you can be really present with what’s going on,” he said. “It’s very important to have a clear mind. I do a lot of practicing at night, when most human energy is at rest and dreaming. There’s less energy interference. Televisions, radios, cars, people, constant motion, talking, talking—it never stops, until everyone goes to bed. “I’ve been backpacking, gone for six weeks without seeing another human being,” he said. “I got to the point where I could feel an airplane coming before I heard it. The energy of our planet is very clean. When you’re around tons of people it gets clogged.” Lopez finished his menudo, returned his plate to the counter, and complimented the kitchen staff. As he walked out, I asked him if he ever thought of moving on to a bigger radio station in the future. “I don’t know if I could be happy at another radio station,” he said. “Did you see that quote from Hunter S. Thompson on our door? It’s true.” MTW

Where to get Italian food Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to eat out on Sunday nights? All the mom and pop shops are closed. And nobody wants to cook on Sunday, including me. So I searched for something new to try. Lucky for me I discovered Antonio’s Restaurant, which is located in the heart of Kihei and is open on Sunday evening. This little hole in the wall boasts lots of Italian goodness made from scratch, and they can deliver. I figured the best way to try a new Italian restaurant was to bring a bunch of Italians along, because Italians are as passionate about eating as they are of cooking. Luckily, my husband and father-in-law fit the bill. As we entered the charming ambiance of Antonio’s we were immediately seated in front of a wall covered by a world map. As we perused the map in search of our roots, we were intoxicated by the different aromas coming from the kitchen. My father-in-law—let’s call him Tony to protect his identity—likes to say “real Italians don’t eat at the Olive Garden.” He scrutinizes everything Italian to determine its authenticity. I was relieved when the menu was in Italian so I had the opportunity to ask him to translate. As he explained insalata ($4.95) was salad and pane all’ aglio ($4.95) was garlic bread, I was already eyeing the more familiar terms like pizza, ravioli and lasagna. Our server came over to tell us about the specials, a fish preparation, chicken parmesan and eggplant parmesan—all of which came as an entrée that included a side bowl of spaghetti and marinara sauce. cussed our choices over some of their delicious homemade bread with olive oil and aged balsalmic vinaigrette while sipping Pelligrinos with lime. My mother-in-law decided to go with the pasta alla marinara ($17.95), a medley of seafoods including scallops, calamari and shrimp in a garden picked tomato-based sauce. I had trouble deciding between the pasta al salmon ($16.95) that featured smoked salmon and a vodka tomato sauce or the pasta con pollo e funghi ($15.95) with cubed chicken breast in a dill cream sauce. The Italian bloods were going with standard favorites and the day’s featured specials, the chicken parm and the eggplant parm, while I felt swayed by the dill cream sauce in the pasta con pollo e funghi. The salads were refreshing, with juicy ripe

tomatoes and sweet carrots on a bed of lettuce. As our meals were served in beautiful deep white ceramic bowls, the anticipation of authentic Italian cuisine was mouth-watering. Eggplant parmesan is a patty of eggplant, laden with breading and cheese, that melts in your mouth. The chicken parmesan is the same deal, but with chicken. The deep bowls of spaghetti accompanying both were enormous and delicious. Of course, us ladies ordered the best dishes. The seafood pasta was a spectacular mixture of fresh seafood in a light tomato sauce, served over penne. The large shrimp caught my eye, and I forced my mother-by-marriage to hand over one of those scrumptious ocean creatures. The pasta con pollo e funghi had a generous amount of white chicken breast and lots

of mushrooms served on penne then slathered in a glorious dill cream sauce. The highlight of my meal came after the entrees when my server offered desserts. At first I declined. But he persisted, saying Antonio’s made the best tiramisu on the island. Seeing as how I’m determined to taste the best tiramisu ever created, I took up the challenge. He was right and I was in tiramisu heaven: It’s the perfect balance of marscapone and espresso-soaked lady fingers. It was an amazing dessert experience. Even more amazing was that it all fit in my stomach. Antonio’s is located at 1215 South Kihei Rd. in the Longs Center. 875-8800. Tues., through Sun., 5 to 9 p.m. Take out available. MTW

No Whale Art Javier Martinez’s blue-collar abstract art Javier Martinez is a talented new artist on Maui. He has been here just 10 months. He came from Los Angeles to meet up with his friend from Cal Arts, Vincent Goudreau, another up and coming artist who is helping put on the exhibit. Martinez has participated in shows in L.A. This exhibit is his first solo show. It’s at the Pacific Center of Photography, a one-stop location for anything having to do with photography. In fact, the Center is currently improving on its gallery and museum area. “We look for young and upcoming artists that really have something interesting to show, but nowhere else to show it,” said Michael Gilbert, who runs the Center. “Most galleries will not do cutting edge exhibits because of the price involved in setting it up. We have an advantage in being able to display the work of these artists.” Martinez will display seven sculptures, two videos and five photographs. His work is varied like his media, but a central theme of abandonment unifies all the pieces. That normally carries a negative connotation, but Martinez is focused on the positive side of

letting attachments go. He does this by recycling abandoned objects. Fallen birds’ nests, cars by the side of the road and discarded construction materials become works of art in Martinez’s world. “I bring life into these disregarded objects I find,” he said. “They represent the letting go of something—a home, a lover, or a comfort zone. It is about letting your guard down, abandoning the nest to journey out with none of the inhibitions that limit most people from doing what they want.” The sculptures combine the organic and inorganic. Horns, shed reptile skin, skeletons and lobster tails become mysterious mutant creatures. The weathered wood of their mountings lends a sense of discovering something ancient and interesting. The nests transform into southwestern style baskets. Indeed, a desert motif runs through all the sculptures. “The traditional is the foundation,” said Martinez. “The pieces take us back to a different era. They are shrines to the old, but moving forward. The shells, horns, and porcupine armor, for example, are all things that the animal no longer needs. By letting go of the old we connect to our real selves.”

Found Art The short video art pieces are certainly unique. Martinez says that the video Four Memories is a cathartic piece representing important things to him that he gave up to move to Maui. The other video he found on a cutting room floor of an old movie from one of his heroes, Charles Bronson. Titled No Confies a Mexicanos Con Dinamita—“Don’t Trust Mexicans With Dynamite”—it compliments the funky Southwestern theme with a Mexican revolutionary style. The photographs are abstract close-up shots of some of Maui’s seemingly countless abandoned cars. The colors he uses and the imagi-

native display style and developing techniques convert eyesores into objects of curiosity. “Art is not a commodity,” said Martinez’s friend and show curator Vincent Goudreau. “It’s not about having people in the doorway convincing you to buy it. There is no price tag attached, but it is affordable to buy. The system of elitist art needs broken down. Art is for people who appreciate it, not just the rich.”

Met In Transition Mediocre Season Opens With Aniston and Stiller Ben Stiller carries on with his trademark neurotic mantle as Reuben Feffer, an anxiety-ridden heartbroken insurance risk assessor who finds impulsive love with Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston), a flaky flyby-night slacker with a blind ferret. Reuben recently dumped his new bride (Debra Messing) on their honeymoon after catching her inflagrante with a scuba instructor and decides to go in the opposite dating direction with spicy foods and dirty salsa
Along Came Polly
★★★★★ dancing. Screenwriter John Hamburg (Meet The Parents) makes his directorial debut in this Ben Stiller vehicle that never gets off the ground. Hank Azaria (Shattered Glass) pops as a scandalous French scuba instructor with an overactive libido, and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Cold Mountain) scene-steals as an ego-driven community theater actor. For a movie with a theme of living life without deferring to fear of the risks involved, the filmmakers
don’t take any chances in breaking the mold of run-of-the-mill romantic comedies. Incompatibility runs rampant in Along Came Polly. The movie opens on Reuben’s and Lisa’s uncomfortable marriage ceremony that is made comical by a terrific pratfall that the Reuben’s drunk friend Sandy (Hoffman) takes on the dance floor. The awkward wedding speeches from the newlyweds and Reuben’s cheeky boss Stan (Alec Baldwin—The Cooler) foreshadow Lisa’s upcoming despicable act of infidelity and posit a cloud of not-so-comic doom over the marriage. It’s a difficult place for Stiller’s character to recover from because his blind cuckold is the feeble protagonist that the audience must identify with throughout the story. Inherent in Reuben’s personality is his weak judgment of character and of physical reality. The film’s running joke about Reuben’s job existence as a nervous risk assessor comes in the guise of daredevil millionaire Leland Van Lew (Bryan Brown—Breaker Morant). Reuben, who has risk assessed every miniscule aspect of his waking life, must validate why his company should insure a guy who goes diving with sharks and B.A.S.E. jumps when he isn’t taking his sailboat through heavy storms.
Leland is Reuben’s polar opposite as a middleaged bachelor intent on dancing on the edge of life’s dangers with as much panache as possible. Reuben, however, is the guy who won’t touch the cocktail nuts at a bar because 36 pairs of dirty hands have already been in there. This brings us to Polly as a girl who temps failure with a rebellious nature that suffers jobs and boyfriends with equal ambivalence. Reuben meets Polly at an art opening with Sandy as his incontinent guide. Hoffman interjects the sequence with the movie’s funniest moments when he runs up to Reuben and insists that they leave immediately because he has just “sharted.” I shouldn’t, in good conscience, expound more on the definition of “sharted” except to say that Hoffman makes the most of the comic possibilities of the scene and his treatment of the humor puts an indelible comic stain in the mind of the viewer. Aniston’s Polly is a stereotype of American girl that most of us have come into contact with at one time or another. She works as an insubordinate catering waitress when she isn’t salsa dancing with her handsome gay friends or decorating her apartment with beads, candles and overpriced loofas. The role is ideal for Aniston’s physical type, but is a departure from the character depth she displayed in The Good Girl. The main reason that Aniston flounders in the part is because she plays the character to literally to be funny. You can sense Aniston trying too hard to compensate for Polly’s shallowness by putting an overwrought blue-collar
edge on her. As written, Polly’s character is too young for Aniston to play, and also too young to fill the bill for Reuben’s nesting needs. It’s a part that an actress like Drew Barrymore could have added more humor to, but would still not have improved much on the overall effect of the movie. Rated PG-13. 90 mins. MTW

This is by far the best movie ever about Hawaii—better even than Hawaii. It also demolishes that ridiculous “Greatest Generation” nonsense about the superior character of the Americans who fought in World War II. Actually filmed at the Schofield Barracks stockade, the Academy Award-winning movie depicts soldiers as petty, conniving, idiotic, inept or just plain fascists during the last days of peace before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Of course, the original novel—written by army vet James Jones in 1951, went much further, delving into prostitution, rampant homosexuality in the barracks, suicide and sadistic brutality by stockade guards. Of course, no one reads anymore, but you can still catch the flick on the big screen. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

JOSS STONE “THE SOUL SESSIONS” Where has all the Soul gone? Are you like me—have you been jonesin’ for some great soul music? Joss Stone has come to the rescue. Her debut release, The Soul Sessions, is a rarity in today’s soulfully malnourished music scene. Take one part Jill Scott, one part India Arie, two parts Angie Stone, add a pinch of Janis Joplin and you are left with the sultry, strong and heartfelt voice of the 16-year-old from Great Britain (yes, she is only 16!). If her taste in music is not enough—she pulls off the Isley’s “For the Love of You,” as well as Aretha’s “All the King’s Horses”—her sultry, strong, and amazing voice will be more than enough. There are some big names helping Stone: Betty Wright (a soulful force in the ‘70s) produces this unique collection with a bit of help from ?guestlove (the Roots) and Angie Stone sings back up (no relation). I will be looking forward to more from this amazing young woman. —S-Curves 2003 [SHANE LEE]
EASY STAR ALL-STARS “DUB SIDE OF THE MOON” Pink Floyd. The name alone may produce a series of fantastic, unproductive, mellow, hazy, hunger driven, dry-mouthed, philosophical memories for some of you. The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most incredible concept albums of all time…not much debate there. How about that fantastic work covered and redone? “Sacrilege!” you shout while searching for your lighter. “Blasphemy!” you mumble while pondering the chemical composition of a Butterfinger. Fret not, Floyd faithful…. the Easy Star AllStars have done the unthinkable in covering—in an exquisitely respectful and fantastic manner, I might add—the Dark Side of the Moon. The Dub Side of the Moon is, in short, a reggae version of one of my favorite albums ever. I won’t waste any more of your time with my inadequate description of this reggae masterpiece. ‘Ere. —Easy Star Records 2003 [SHANE LEE]
COMMON “ELECTRIC CIRCUS” Have you ever been to the circus? I’ve been to a few, including one in Russia. The Russian Circus is lame. They think it’s the greatest thing since toilet paper was invented. Instead of elephants, they use bears. I don’t blame those Russkies. Have you ever seen the Animals Gone Wild clip of the elephant going berserk, stomping the ringmaster and running wild in the streets? That shit is nuts. Bears would never do that; at least the Chicago Bears wouldn’t. Those guys couldn’t run out of a wet paper bag. —MCA Records 2002 [$AYFOO]
LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES “THE VENEZUELAN ZINGASON VOL. 1” Los Amigos Invisibles are the most important export from Venezuela besides petroleum. I was fortunate to see them live in Caracas opening for Los Pericos and Cypress Hill, and again in San Francisco last February. It is impossible to resist their rump shakin’ assault. A few years ago they left Caracas to hit it big in New York and have become a hot item of the Manhattan music scene. David Byrne’s label, Luaka Bop, signed them and they have released three stellar funk, dance albums. Their unique sound combines salsa, disco, funk, house, and rock into a very Venezuelan, but universally appealing style. They are known for their lascivious, smart-ass lyrics, but many of the double entendres get lost in translation. That doesn’t matter though, because this music forces you to shake your ass and if you understand the words, they’ll crack you up too. The production is super suave and they add some Brazilian percussion elements, while boosting their intensely funky reputation. ¡Que vacilón, vale! —Long Lost Brother 2003 [JOE GATTO]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “SAMPA NOVA” Sao Paulo has been called the Blade Runner of the tropics. The city’s interesting mix of diverse cultures creates a musical melting pot where many styles converge and become something unique and futuristic. This new compilation includes artists of many different styles, most of them transcending labels and genres. Tom Zé was a leader in the Tropicália movement of the 1960s and has become kind of like a Brazilian Frank Zappa. Cibelle is blessed with the sexiest voice and profound song writing talents. Fernanda Porto is a prodigy who was classically trained at Brazil’s top conservatory and also puts out some of the best Brazilian electronica. Her tune “Sambassim” mixes Bossa Nova with drum and bass to create a surefire dance floor smash. Drumagick contributes “Easy Boom” which samples Jorge Ben and is an irresistible dance number. The world’s most intriguing music comes from Brazil and this album shows its future. —Stern’s Brasil 2003 [JOE GATTO] MTW

DAY&NIGHT
last week of the Year of the Sheep. In other words, get ready for some major shifts. A powerful feeling of independence overcomes you. Make sure you have good friends around you to help you land on your feet. TAURUS: With weapons of mass destruction on your mind, it’s a wonder you can get anything done. Your mental clarity will be restored. Others share your vision of freedom. You’re ready for a walk on the “wild side.” GEMINI: The weekend is splendid for all easy-going activities. Romance, contracts and agreements are easy to come by. Hard work is a pain in the ass, yet you are coming to terms with the need to get ahead. A new adventure is opening up. CANCER: Every honeymoon has its sunrise and sunset. Sunset can be the best time or the loneliest time. Relax and savor the changes. A spiritual approach to relationships is best. You’re learning to demonstrate compassion in the face of authority. LEO: There’s a payback for all of your nose-tothe-grindstone activities. You’ve done a lot to help others. I think it’s time for you to help yourself. Or maybe get someone to help you. The weekend is full of play, flirtation and creative expression. VIRGO: Sometimes growth hurts. This is not the case this week. Stuff yourself with extreme fun. You’re bound to break a vow or commit a minor social violation. People love it when the prude turns pimp. They also love the reformed and repented whore. LIBRA: Clean up your imagination. Thoughts help create the future. While your workload increases, keep in mind the ethic of beauty and balance that you share with others. No one I know is looking for a lazy lover. Caffeine may not be the answer. SCORPIO: If you eat a lot you’ll need to physically work it off. Get physical. Exercise will enhance your capacity for pleasure. Meanwhile, family needs will require more attention. Take time to enhance your living space. Pay attention to communication. SAGITTARIUS: Rediscover your inner self. Hang out with those who know you deeply. You need friends to share with. Communicate your material needs. Ye have not because ye ask not. The weekend features a Sagittarius moon. Work it! CAPRICORN: It’s time to finish the changes that you’ve wanted to make. Partnership limitations need to be addressed one step at a time. Your material values are more in focus. You get smarter. Avoid impulse buying. AQUARIUS: Your season begins Tuesday. Until then, congratulate yourself on cornering the market on being able to dissolve things efficiently. Like a farmer, you’re planting seeds. I see you buying crazy new tools and techno toys. PISCES: Sudden changes in love and art are about to commence. Hang on to your seat—I feel a wild ride coming on. Your talents are in view this weekend. Dreams, karma and secrets are part of the new scenario. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Martin Luther King Jr. 1/15/29, Steve Earl 1/17/55, Ann Wedgeworth 1/21/35 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
Five Days WEDNESDAY Katy, Lynn, BJ, Lezlie and I went to Kahului Ale House for pupus and chocolate martinis, then to see Something’s Gotta Give. After the movie, BJ, Lezlie and I went to Mulligan’s in Wailea briefly, then Hapa’s in Kihei. The girls danced. Lezlie got hit on by the hot Home Depot guy, while BJ fended off a large, black man who tried to dance with the ladies on the dance floor by announcing, “I’m gonna freak you!” and I mourned the impending loss of The Pole on the stage. On the way home, we were tragically denied the purportedly open 24/7 Jack In The Box by a piece of paper with “We’re Closed—Sorry for the Inconvenience” scrawled across it and taped to the outside menu. We’ve got some words for you, Jack!
THURSDAY Hung out with Satan and Lezlie at Lulu’s in Kihei. There were two guys sitting next to me who were not necessarily being sociable and thus noted, “This bar is boring.” I slyly—or so I thought—whipped out my little notebook to write down their observation. From this they immediately concluded without any help from me but a nervous giggle or two, that: a) I’m a writer, b) I write for Maui Time Weekly, and c) I’m Holoholo Girl. Pretty good deductive reasoning for a couple of bored, drunk guys at the bar, eh? I tried to introduce my new drinking pals to the characters at Henry’s, Kahale’s and Life’s A Beach. Then we went to Bocalino, where Satan met an interesting bloke who was fond of talking about the “Piccadilly Square” and other such stuff. We discussed the merits of Absinthe and petrol while shooting B55’s. I also notice the notes I’ve been taking have dissolved into drunken bad poetry. Recollection of the rest of the week becomes tentative at this point.
FRIDAY Rudi, Lezlie and I met up with Adam at—again—Kahului Ale House. Then we went to see Warren Miller’s Journey at the MACC. Afterwards, us westside folks drove back to Lahaina and dropped off sick boy Rudi, then Lezlie and I went on to Breakwater to catch the rest of the popular contemporary Hawaiian band Nuff Sed. Wow. I feel like there was something else I did on Friday, but honestly, I don’t remember.
SATURDAY The strange effects of this month’s lunar cycle on all my female friends is becoming increasingly more problematic. After a full day of ditching the cell phone and avoiding all human contact or social interaction, I was ready to face the evening. Gomega was playing at Casanova in Makawao and I absolutely could not miss them nor any of my upcountry buddies. There was the lovely but sick Heidi, Khrinj boys Ian and John, moving maven Chandra (she’s changed addresses something like six times in the last year), mischief-maker Dave and when-are-you-going-togive-up-that-“cunterific”-t-shirt Paul. Lezlie and I also checked out the Crunch Pups at Stopwatch—that is, until she got a flirty wink and blown kiss from a female patron so we scrambled outta there fast. Whatever, Lezlie—she was cute.

SUNDAY After a midday breakfast at Castaway Café in Kaanapali that concluded with a couple shots of Patrón, Lezlie and I dropped off the boys—Satan and Dave—who were intent on getting “pissed” drunk on their day off at the Tiki Bar while we headed to Hula Grill, only to come face-to-face with said demon and his deluged but previously humble disciple moments later. We left them to go somewhere less obvious—the Westin’s Poolside Bar—and hung out touristastyle with my ol’ roommate Charlotte serving us some very froufrou tropical cocktails. But then Satan and Dave showed up again so we had to leave. So Lezlie and I went to Leilani’s and hung out with Justin and Steve and their entourage. Then we decided to hang at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina, but when we walked in, there’s good ol’ Beelzebub himself, with his corrupted companion, so we left. Later, BJ and I walked into Bamboo’s and guess who was there… again! Why is it that everywhere I go, I find myself in the company of Satan and his followers? Or am I just constantly drawn to the devil himself? Whatever it is, it’s pure evil and my soul is need of redemption. Rather, my liver will be in need of transplant should I keep the company of such tempters for much longer. But it IS so much fun. MTW
