Oh, what a beautiful day in Maui. Let’s see what’s in my mailbox. “Big Cat Roams Loose in Wailea.” What?! You can’t be serious! I thought the Maui Weekly was an actual newspaper. Shame on you, Cort Gallup! Shame on you, Joseph Sugarman! The National Enquirer has more creditable stories than Maui Weeklys “fear and careless” reporting. Fake big boobs in my mailbox is one thing but money-biased, fear driven, guilt-causing news reporting, is just downright dirty. I wouldn’t mind so much if it wasn’t force-fed on me, taking up valuable space in my P.O. Box. When you ran the story on the so-called “theft” of your “newspaper,” I seriously thought it was a joke. Why, you ask? Once a week I get my mail at the Makawao post office, and every week, the outside counter is covered with a thick layer of discarded Maui Weeklys. People instantly throw it on the counter and don’t have enough interest in it to take it home. When I first saw the picture of discarded Maui Weeklys, I thought it WAS the Makawao Post Office outside counter. Mr. Sugarman, you need to understand something. The reason why your paper is in the trash is because PEOPLE DO NOT WANT YOUR NEWSPAPER! I doubt there was ever a “thief” and even thinking that your paper is worth disrupting is preposterous! I think it was a “poor me” way to slither your way into our mailboxes and bleeding hearts. Dare I say that it could have been a dastardly way to increase advertising? First you publish a false story about “thieves” stealing your paper. This leads to an excuse to increase circulation in order to “fight” the “theft.” You even admit a drive to gain more advertisers and state that with the increase of circulation due to “theft,” Maui Weekly can “offer advertisers many benefits as our circulation will be significantly greater than that of any other publication in the region.” You have the right to print whatever you want, Mr. Sugarman, and you have a right

to own whatever you want. But, we as the community have the right to know the financial involvement, underlining intention, and bias of our local journalists and publication owners who claim to present “factual” news. If you want to publish a rightwing, pro-development, conservative biased, propaganda paper, then you have the right to do so, but it would be an honorable deed if your intentions were clear and honest. And for God sakes, allow us to choose your paper instead of making the choice for us! -Frank Pulaski, Kula

BIO-LETTER I loved Joshua Cooper’s enthusiastic account of driving up Haleakala in the VW Beetle running on bio-diesel (“I Love the Smell of French Fries in the Morning,” Jan. 1). He really hit some of the best points about this fuel, and the joyful sense of freeing oneself from imported oil. But I had to smile when he described his car as “the world’s first bio-diesel.” I guess this means that I was only dreaming while I spent several of the last years hammering down German Autobahns at high speed in rented Audi, VW and Ford Focus TurboDiesels, running on bio-diesel, which was readily available in the small Bavarian town where I lived. They had not been converted, but were recent enough to be able to use the fuel without further modification. A German mechanic friend of mine recently described to me how even older converted diesels were able to be tanked up right in the parking lot of the German equivalent of Costco, from cheap 3-liter bottles of cooking oil bought at the store. Mileage per gallon was dramatically better than gas, as well: I averaged about 50, even including the high speed driving. -David Bowles, Ph.D., Kihei

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Talking Like The X-Files Jeffrey Smith knows, hates GMOs Jeffrey M. Smith is a skinny guy with dark receding hair and a beard. A former vice president of marketing for a laboratory designed to detect the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Smith says he and his wife Andrea live in Iowa “surrounded by genetically modified corn and soybeans.” On Jan. 14, Smith gave a lecture on GMOs at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kahului. Beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m., he spoke for a little over an hour before he had to rush off to Akaku television studios for an 8 p.m. show. The stop in Maui was part of a tour highlighting his new book Seeds of Deception, an exposé of the GMO industry. As nearly two dozen people filed into the church, sitting in the first six pews, activists handed out small petitions asking registered voters to check off which anti-GMO policies they supported, such as requiring food labeling, banning GMOs entirely and holding “liable Biotech corporations for damages caused by GMO products.” GMOs are simply plants, fungus and/or bacteria that have been injected with genes from other plants, fungus and/or bacteria. Often, this occurs because scientists want to grow crops resistant to herbicides. But as Smith pointed out, genetic modification can lead to “unpredicted side effects”— things like “unregulated cell growth,” disease and death. Often, Smith said, genetic damage may not appear for years. “Protecting yourself turns out to be one of the most powerful activist actions you can take,” Smith said. “Simply inform people about the truth. I’m not asking anyone to do this for ethical or environmental reasons—just personal protection.” As rain intermittently pounded the ground outside, Smith warned the 20 audience members—counting his wife and myself—about the gravity of what he was about to say. “It can get emotional,” he said. “I’m going to talk about government corruption and industry manipulation. Some people can’t sit through the whole lecture.” But on this night, everyone somehow managed. He didn’t disappoint. “I write drama,” he said. “I write stories.” Indeed, when his wife Andrea introduced him, she said “every chapter went by many scientists… until it was bulletproof. It reads like the X-Files.” Sometimes, Smith even talked like the X-Files. When mentioning how audience members are often horrified by his lec-

tures, he said that he would also tell us “how to take that emotional energy and convert it into action units.” In fact, Smith was so dramatic he managed to make the word “different” sound ominous. “The FDA has said they have seen no information indicating that [genetically modified] foods are different,” he said at one point. “But [their own] scientists have insisted the foods are different.” Then, later on: “We know that milk from cows treated with [genetically-modified growth hormone RBGH] is different from other untreated cows.” Smith talked of various mysteries and enigmas surrounding GMOs. When given a choice, animals don’t eat GMOs, he said. A few minutes later, Smith revealed that allergies in the U.S. have “skyrocketed” in the last few years. “Between 1991 and 2000, food-related diseases in the U.S. doubled,” he also said. Whether any or all of those curiosities was directly attributable to GMOs, Smith couldn’t say. But Smith did say that the obvious way to get rid of such mysteries—rigorous testing— isn’t being done. “The FDA’s stated purpose is to ‘promote biotechnology,’” he said. “They’re not regulating it.” Smith also quoted one whistleblower who denounced industry studies as “designed to avoid finding problems.” Smith denounced government, industry and academia with great seriousness, but managed every now and then to veer into gallows humor. “There’s been just one human feeding study,” said Smith. “If you don’t count the big one we’re all involved in.” Avoiding GMOs isn’t easy, Smith told one audience member at the end of the lecture. You can buy organic or keep to products that carry “non-GMO” labels, but those aren’t guarantees. Since the federal government refuses to regulate GMOs or even mandate labeling, the term “organic” or “non-GMO” differs from product to product. “Anything that has soy, corn, cottonseed or canola has GMOs,” he said. “So just don’t buy those products.” Of course, anyone who’s strolled down the Safeway aisle knows just about everything contains some manifestation of soy, corn, cottonseed or canola. “My marketing plan is to topple the industry,” he said in conclusion. “If they see a drop of one to two percent [in sales], they will not hesitate to protect their market share and pull GMOs off the shelves.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, JAN. 12 It may be 2004, but your Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) just won the 2003 Meeting News Planners’ Choice award. Booo Yaaaaahh! “We’re thrilled to receive this award as it validates all the hard work we put into marketing Hawaii and servicing the meetings that take place at hotel and resort properties throughout the state,” said Michael Murray, CMP, CMM, CASE, HVCB’s director of sales for the Corporate Meetings and Incentives (CMI) division (I have no idea what all those initials mean, but they were in today’s press release and in any case I’m sure they’re critically important visitor-related things). “It’s gratifying to know that the level of professionalism and service that HVCB provides is being recognized by meeting planners for the business they bring to Hawaii.” Of course, there were a few things Murray left out his press release, like the fact that HVCB is staring down the barrel of three state audits the Associated Press says show HVCB has committed “numerous accounting violations,” holds “inherent conflicts of interest” and needs “serious management reforms.” AP says such findings could result in the HVCB returning $3 million of “inappropriately used money” to the state this year. HVCB president John Monahan said his agency is reforming. Of course, I would have put all that stuff in the Planners’ Choice award release, but there’s a lot about public relations I don’t understand.

Quick, grab the new 10th Anniversary issue of the Haleakala Times before it runs out! And you better grab it quick if you want all the info on… the Maui Weekly. Huh? No joke—there’s some attack on the

Weekly on nearly every page of the Times. And not just the cute, pithy little digs you find in, oh, this paper—I’m talking long-winded, repetitive, thoroughly tiresome rants that give the impression Times editor Ken Pinsky would rather have Weekly Publisher/Editor in Chief Joe Sugarman’s job… Seriously folks, what’s happening to comedian Bu La’ia ain’t funny. Three months ago he allegedly attacked animal control officers with a pickax. Last month he allegedly assaulted a girlfriend. Now he’s stewing in Maui County Correctional Center, and he decides to skip a bail hearing. See my problem? What’s funny about assault? How do you make a joke about attacking someone with a pickax? Now if he’d gone after them with a poleax, the gag would write itself… Since we’re talking crime, how come there’s a legion of coppers in Kamehameha Iki Park right now, harassing honest, decent working folks who just want to ignore the “beach parking only” signs and park there illegally? Anyone? I suppose I could just go over there and ask them, but they might ask me where I parked my car… Poleax… Awwwww yeaaaaaahhhhh.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

SATURDAY, JAN. 17

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 14 As usual, the Maui News hears all, knows all and tells all. Well, tells most. Anyway, they answered my question about why Johnny Law camped out in the parking lot yesterday. Seems the fuzz was out in force as part of the county’s big crackdown on the epidemic of illegal beach activities. Basically, we’re talking surf schools operating without a license. “Enforcement is good, everybody needs rules,” Rick Leong, owner of Hawaiian Style Surf School, told the News. “It’s the sport of kings; let’s just do it right.” Sure, you scoff, but if history tells us nothing else—and it doesn’t—it says “crack down on illegal beach activities now, while you still can.” Remember Russia in 1917? They were neck-deep in illegal beach activities— well, that and war dead—but did they do any-

sive views on how the state should deal with drug offenders. “If you want to incarcerate someone for doing drugs you must put funding in those bills so that treatment can be given,” he told Maui Time a few months before he and his forbidden love started gettin’ it on… It doesn’t take even the pastiest tourist long to realize that Maui has a boatload of graveyards. And why not? A lot of people have lived on Maui in the last couple of centuries, and a sizeable portion of them have died. Now, some cemeteries are in better condition than others. Take Maui Memorial Park, for instance. No seriously, take it—the place is in bad shape. Take it! What are you, scared? I said take it! Last October a retaining wall collapsed, uncovering more caskets than you would have thought possible. Seems so many coffins aren’t underground anymore that cemetery officials have had to put the remains in storage. “Unfortunately, it takes time to get this thing done right,” Tracy Flam, VP for cemetery operations and sales, said in today’s Maui News.

thing about it? Nope—they just let it all slide and before they knew it that Lenin guy walked in and suddenly the whole place went pinko.

THURSDAY, JAN. 15 I’m pretty sure that even after adjusting for inflation, Lenin got more tail than P. Diddy.

FRIDAY, JAN. 16 Speaking of tail, former Maui County Correctional Center warden Albert K. Murashige pled no contest yesterday to four counts of illegally fraternizing (I think the lawyers used some technical legal term like “sexual assault”) with a female prisoner back in May and June, 2003. Murashige had been warden for 12 years before allegedly putting the “mate” back in “inmate.” Of course, this whole affair is a shame, and not merely because he seems to have violated the law and trashed the public trust given him as county warden. It’s also troubling because Murashige held moderate, even progres-

Maui Sierra Club holds its annual meeting and celebrates grassroots action in Spreckelsville at the Kaunoa Senior Center by talking about… Utah. They even brought out Bob Brister, the outreach coordinator for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, to present his slide show Wild Utah: America’s Redrock Wilderness. A Sierra Club press release explained that the Utah wilderness campaign has kept drilling and mining out of millions of acres of public land. Still, you gotta question the wisdom of highlighting Utah, where I believe the state motto is “Get out while you still can”… Zoo Maui, the Upcountry petting zoo that allows children to get up close and personal to farm animals like chickens, sheep, goats and Squirt the fouryear-old wonder giraffe—who is not technically a “farm animal” per se but is nonetheless very popular—is shutting down. The zoo, which is $20,000 in debt, had wanted to build a new $4 million, five-acre zoo in Pukalani. “[W]e cannot continue without support,” executive director Wanda Riggs told the Maui News. She also said that without a sudden surge in donations, Feb. 7 would be the zoo’s last day. After that, they’d have to send Squirt back to his original home in Honolulu. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD JUST CURIOUS Derek Leroy McSmith of Forest City, Ga., has filed 10,618 formal open-records requests to local governments in the last eight months, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. Most were, he said, to satisfy his curiosity about how government works. But one day, he asked for 490 magazines and on another day, he checked out 100 books (and soon, according to the librarian, walked outside and dropped them into the return bin). Each request must be logged in and processed, and a Forest City clerk spends almost full-time on McSmith’s work. Several officials said that after they locate his documents, he only glances at them (or, if there is a cost involved, declines the documents). A local First Amendment advocate said the situation was merely “one of the downsides of a free and open society.”

NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE In November, police in Brooklyn, N.Y., set a trap and arrested a 44-year-old man and his 22-year-old associate for having kidnapped a teenager earlier in the day and having sought a $20,000 ransom from his mother; the sting was set up after the men, for some reason, released their victim (who went straight home) but continued to demand the ransom.

FETISHES ON PARADE Steve Danos, 24, was arrested as allegedly the man who had been sneaking into young women’s apartments to watch them sleep and to snuggle with them (and, sometimes, to fold their laundry) (Baton Rouge, La., October). And Stephen P. Linnen, 33, an assistant to Republican legislators in the Ohio

BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

House, was indicted on 56 counts stemming from an 18-month spree in which a naked man jumps out from hiding and photographs startled women’s reactions (Columbus, Ohio, November). And Japanese men’s fetish for schoolgirls’ used underwear is such a problem, concluded a civic panel, that shops that cater to them are proliferating, thus enticing more and more girls to become suppliers (Tokyo, October).

COMPELLING EXPLANATION In a deposition earlier this year as part of his divorce proceedings (and released in November), the president’s brother, Neil Bush, admitted that he had had sex with several women while on business trips in Asia, but that he did not seek them out, insisting that they simply came to his door. Asked his exwife’s lawyer, “Mr. Bush, you have to admit it’s a pretty remarkable thing for a man just to go to a hotel room door and open it and have a woman standing there and have sex with her.” Responded Bush, “It was very unusual.”

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS In November, Michael Patrick Mikitka, 35, was arrested and charged as the man who had held up six banks in one week in the Pittsburgh area, including one in which he had written the holdup note on a check issued to him when he opened his account. In the final robbery, at the PNC Bank in Wilkinsburg, he was on his way out the door when the security guard said that the teller needed to see him again, and as he walked back in, the doors locked, and the guard grabbed him. Pending trial, Mikitka was sent to drug rehabilitation, but he left the facility on Dec. 22 and was re-arrested the same day when he allegedly robbed the same National City bank that he had robbed twice during his November spree.

A New Dream How we should really remember Martin Luther King It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who said “Make a career of humanity and you will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country and a finer world to live in.” Last Monday was his national day of recognition, the 18th so far. President George W. Bush placed a wreath at his gravesite, taking a stand that King’s message of world peace and wisdom for nonviolence is alive and well. In Hawaii, there were programs ranging from the ringing of the Nagasaki Peace Bell to dinners and edutainment events sharing his message, as well as a march through Waikiki with thousands reminding us to never stop demanding that his dream be realized. The 2004 King Holiday marks the seventy-fifth birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., providing the possibility to remember his peaceful protests and rededicate ourselves to nonviolent social change in America and the world.

BY JOSHUA COOPER

Yet for the last 18 years, we’ve celebrated the activist and reverend who preached peace and justice by taking the day off. On Monday, we didn’t have to show up for classes or work. Yet, there is a higher calling demanding our creative cerebellum power and moral commitment to community action and advocacy in memory of Dr. King. While we didn’t have to worry about homework and meetings, our community and planet are in dire need of a generation of humanity eager to direct our energy and empathy to realize the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. King’s holiday symbolizes our nation’s commitment to peace through justice, universal solidarity and a noble ideal of all: a democratic, civil society based on the peaceful principles of freedom, justice and equality for all people on the planet. The theme for this day and every day of the year should be to remember, celebrate and act to create a Day On—not a Day Off. “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others,” said King’s wife Coretta Scott. “Remember, it’s not a day off— it’s a day on.” We can change our society to act for a greater common good. We must have the courage to challenge current oppressions. We must instigate curiosity to think about what we care for

and then have conviction to take action. “I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and justice for their spirits,” said King. “I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, other-centered men can build up.”

democracy, we can take the first step on the path King paved with his life. We can study the peacemakers Te Whiti, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan. We don’t have to begin movements. We can plug in and participate in existing efforts for change instilling innovation and imagination. Never doubt the potential role you can play in social change. We can work with grassroots movements such as Maui Peace Action and Hawaii Institute for Human Rights. We can connect with global networks such as Amnesty International and the United Nations Associations. While King wasn’t able to fulfill his dream of fundamental freedoms realized in our

A soul generated by love, and you can be that servant.” Lives of compassion, commitment, creativity and social change are the path toward personal and planetary peace. We are all interconnected and our fate is indivisible with one another. As King said, “I can never be what I ought to be, until you are what you ought to be.” MTW

OPED

BY TED RALL

Weasels of Crass Deception All talk no pay makes George a dull boy Somebody at Homeland Security must have slipped the manuscript of my next book to Karl Rove. Among other things, my upcoming political manifesto posits that the Republicans won’t be able to surf the 9/11-generat-

ed shock-and-awe wave forever. It’s still the economy, stupid; it always will be. All the foreign policy successes in the world— catching Saddam, terrorizing Libya into unilateral disarmament, dragging Osama’s bloated carcass down K Street—won’t make 3 million people forget that they’ve lost their jobs or that Bush, whose estimated net worth runs between $9,634,088 and $26,593,000, refused to extend their unemployment checks. Unless there’s another dramatic attack in ‘04, domestic issues will determine what happens in November. Bush kicked off his “re”election campaign with a package of domestic economic proposals he announced during the State of the Union address. What the GOP calls “The Ownership Society,” wrote conservative New York Times pundit David Brooks, will “embrace the more productive and fluid economy, but make sure government aggressively moves to give workers the tools they need to cope.”

“The Ownership Society,” which acknowledges that most people change employers and careers throughout their working lives, shows that conservatives have been doing some creative thinking about their domestic agenda. Among the highlights: Portable Health Insurance: Tax credits would subsidize medical premiums, the number of people who qualify for existing government programs like Medicare would be expanded, and small businesses would be allowed to form pools so their employees would qualify for group plans. Reemployment Accounts: Unemployment stipends would be replaced by lump-sum personal “accounts” that layoff victims could spend, says Brooks, “on training, child care, a car, a move to a place with more jobs, or whatever else they think would benefit them.” Privatizing Social Security: This idea has been around for years. You would decide where to invest the money in your Social Security “account,” like employees do now with their 401(k)s. As with a 401(k), you would reap big rewards during stock market booms but risk getting wiped out in a crash. Except for Social Security privatization, which would excessively endanger retirement funds to line the pockets of politicallyconnected Wall Street brokerage houses, these are interesting ideas—in theory. But if you take a closer look, reality asks a lot of tough questions. Bush says he wants Americans to adopt a “responsibility culture.” But his Ownership Society concept requires more responsibility than most folks should be asked to bear. The health insurance tax credit, for example, would come in the form of a big refund check after taxpayers file their 1040s. Many workers, hit hard by stagnating wages and unexpected expenses, will spend the government windfall on other bills. The same thing goes for reemployment accounts. If a guy blows his lumpsum unemployment payment on a casino

riverboat or Internet gaming-site bender, he and his family could end up out on the street. You and me, we might spend the money on computer classes. But for too many people, it’s too big a temptation. Worse still, the GOP’s track record suggests that Bush’s Ownership Society would merely replace the antiquated liberal safety net—which assumes that a person works for the same employer his or her entire life— with a privatized system that’s so poorly underfinanced as to be worthless. The much-ballyhooed No Child Left Behind Act has been, well, left behind—it hasn’t received a penny. Bush welched on his promise to spend $15 billion on African AIDS prevention. The average dollar value of the school vouchers issued by Cleveland, whose program Republicans say should be copied nationally, is so low that parents can’t afford to move their kids to private schools. And the average taxpayer will receive just $800 from Bush’s tax cuts— enough to bankrupt the treasury but not to stimulate the economy. “Congress and the administration are looking at proposals that cost $50 billion to $80 billion over 10 years,” the Times said. But that’s chump change next to the size of the problems they claim to address. $8 billion per year would provide healthcare to just three percent of America’s 44 million uninsured. And it wouldn’t leave anything for reemployment accounts. The only way to fund this election-year vote grab would be to cancel the $1.8 trillion tax cuts and the $100 million-per-year occupation of Iraq—but Republicans aren’t that serious. “The public is not expecting perfection, but is looking for progress,” says GOP pollster David Winston. Perhaps he’s right—maybe the American people will view three percent as “progress.” But where I come from, three percent ain’t even a tip. MTW

Have you seen the woman in white? “Pele is very much alive in Hawaii today...” -H. Arlo Nimmo, The Pele Literature: An Annotated Bibliography of the English-Language Literature on Pele, Volcano Goddess of Hawaii. Nineteen eighty-three, the year my research began, was a banner year for Madame Pele. At 12.31 a.m. on Jan. 3, Pele kicked off the longest running show in the volcanic history of the Hawaiian Islands. Since that day lava has erupted almost nonstop from Kilauea volcano and shows no sign of abating. The start of Pele’s record tantrum coincided with the beginning of my time in the Islands. That year I took early retirement from the San Francisco Chronicle, sold my Stinson Beach shack, bought a oneway ticket to Hawaii, and set off on an extended tour of Asia and the Pacific. First stop: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where I wanted to experience the fury of a live volcano; Hawaii is the only place on the planet you can get safely up close to an eruption. I visited the park at high noon on a voggy Good Friday with my wife, Marcie, and daughter, Shannon, and for some reason, probably the observance of the Christian holy day, we were the only people in the park, or so it seemed. We hiked Devastation Trail, marched across steaming Kilauea Iki crater, stood on the edge of burbling Halemaumau crater, probed drippy Thurston Lava Tube, and hiked beyond the end of Chain of Craters Road to see the red. In 1870, Mark Twain visited the volcano and thought the fire and smoke reminded him of hell, but standing there surrounded by black lava covering red hot magma it all

seemed to me somehow sacred, not like in a church full of statues, but sacred in a primal, supernatural way. I felt the presence of an invisible power. More than once, I glanced over my shoulder to see if someone— Madame Pele, perhaps?—was there. Nobody ever was. Overwhelmed by the artistry and magnitude of Pele’s work I left the park only a wee bit disappointed since I had hoped to see the fire goddess, herself. It was not to be, not then. Shortly after that first visit, Pele sparked not one but two Big Island eruptions and for the first time in 116 years Kilauea and Mauna Loa erupted at the same time. I returned to the Big Island as often as I could to get a close look at Pele’s work in progress and soon began collecting stories by folks who claimed to have met her in person...

THE GIRL BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I am telling this story because after she told it to me she disappeared. I don’t know what happened to her. All I know is what she told me. We met on Maui at Borders one night when I told spooky tales from my books. At the end of the evening I asked if anyone in the audience had a story to share. Hands rose slowly. A woman told about the “pressing” spirit that held her down in a Kula bed and breakfast, a young boy had seen a fireball in the old Japanese graveyard at Kauiki Head in Hana. A bookstore clerk, Lynne, I think her name was, said she had a Pele story but

she didn’t want to tell it in front of others; people might think she was, you know, lolo. After everyone left that night, I listened to her story. This is what she told me: “One night driving from I’ao Valley I saw this young woman hitchhiking. “We’ve all heard the stories about Madame Pele hitchhiking but I always thought she hitchhiked somewhere else, on the Big Island, I guess. “I never heard of Madame Pele hitchhiking on Maui, not in Kahului. Every story I ever heard, she was never a young woman. She’s supposed to be an old woman. This was a young woman.

“Young women hitchhike on Maui, but not usually at night, not in Kahului. “Something’s wrong, I thought, something doesn’t feel right. I decided not to stop and pick her up. I drove by, and as I did I glanced at her, and she looked right at me, and smiled. “I drove on, and when I got to the next light I couldn’t believe my eyes. There she was again, standing by the side of the road, thumb out, a smile on her face. “I had to look, to make sure it was her, and not another young woman hitchhiking. It was her. “I didn’t know, what to do: Stop, go, look, smile, wave, what? “The light turned green, and I drove by her. I tried not to look, but I had to, at the last minute I stole a glance. She looked straight at me and smiled again, a big, eerie smile. “I was spooked. I kept driving and started wondering—was I seeing things?— when just ahead at the next stop light I could see her again, standing by the side of

by rick carroll the road, thumb out, hitchhiking, smiling at me. “I panicked. I just stepped on it and drove as fast as I could past her, down the road to Borders, jumped out, locked my car, and ran inside. I told everyone what happened. “They said there were only two, maybe three explanations: I’d been seeing things. I’d somehow picked up a wandering spirit. Or Madame Pele was messing with my mind.” That’s her story, and I believe her. She got spooked just recalling her encounter. You can’t fake real fright. When I called her a few weeks later to ask a follow-up question, her phone number was disconnected, and there was no new number. The store manager at Borders told me the clerk up and quit her job one day and nobody saw her again. Everyone remembered her story, though. I don’t know what happened to her, but I’d like to know if she’s okay. And if some night between I’ao Valley and Kahului you see the girl by the side of the road I’d sure like to hear from you.

THE PASSENGER She stood in shimmering heat waves on the shoulder of Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway at high noon on what felt like the hottest day of the year. I thought at first the woman in the white dress might be a mirage. She stuck out her thumb, and I stopped. My day full of strange encounters began in Honolulu at the airport. A security guard wanted to inspect my carry-

on. “Oh, I love your books,” she said, finding spooky books in my bag. I gave her one. She gave me a big mahalo, and waved me onward. On line at Starbucks, a Charles Manson look-a-like, one of the terminal’s homeless denizens, hit me up for $3. He wanted “a wet, double tall, French vanilla latte.” His outrageous request made me laugh. I gave him a buck. While waiting for my coffee I was paged repeatedly: “...please return to the Security Gate.” I finally got my coffee and went back to find I’d dropped my ticket to Kona during the security check. I ran to the gate only to find my plane was late. I arrived at Keahole Airport to learn Budget was out of cars. “We have an 10-passenger van,” the clerk said. You can have it for the same price as an economy sedan.” “It’s only me,” I said. “It’s all we have,” the clerk said. That’s how I came to be all alone driving an air-conditioned 10-passenger van on the Big Island’s Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway on what felt like the hottest day of the year. My destination was Waimea School where I’d been invited to read to children as part of the Marriott Waikoloa Outrigger’s annual spooky “talk story” event. I saw the hitchhiker on the highway just after leaving the airport. Since it was just me, all alone in the airconditioned 10-passenger van, I stopped. She got in. Immediately, something was wrong. The chilled van seemed warmer with her aboard. “Where’re you going?” “Waimea,” she said. “Me too,” I said. “Do you live there?” “No” she said, “just visiting.” She was neither young nor old, but somewhere in between, with caramel skin, charcoal dreadlocks, bright, clear eyes, and a soft voice that sounded like music. She carried neither suitcase nor backpack only a white canvas bag stuffed with old newspapers and magazines, and handwritten notes on yellow legal pads. There was about her the distinct odor of something flammable. I thought for a moment the 10-passenger rental van had a gas leak. Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway is unique in Hawai’i. The two-lane black asphalt not only runs through 20 miles of black lava landscape it crosses over several layers of historic lava flows and under four of the island’s five volcanoes—Kohala, Hualalei, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Pele land if there ever was. Most passers-by see only a bleak charcoal expanse. My passenger knew and identified each and every lava flow with evident pride as if each flow were an object of art in her private collection. “Ka’upulehu flowed to the sea in 1801,” she said as we passed under Hualalai vol-

cano. “It filled Kiholo Bay... “... and the 1859 Mauna Loa flow ran from 9,000 feet near the summit to the sea... “... the Kaniku flow covered Waikoloa and ran into the fish ponds at Anaeho’omalu...” Although I had no way to verify the truth of her words, her keen recitation startled me. “How do you know all this?” I asked. “Just do,” she said. “It’s my hobby.” We rode in silence for a mile or so. I half expected her to ask for a cigarette—a common request of Pele, the fire goddess. “Don’t you want to ask me for a cigarette?” “I don’t smoke,” she said, smiling. We rode on in silence. “Are you sure you’re not Madame Pele?” I finally asked. I couldn’t help it. “Oh no,” she said. “I’m not Madame Pele.” “How do I know?” “Believe me,” she laughed. “I’m not sure I do,” I said. In misty rain, we approached Waimea town. She said good-bye and thanks at the T-intersection. “I’ll get out here,” she said at the stoplight, opened the door and jumped out. She cut across the corner gas station, walking fast. I half expected the gas pumps to burst into flames. That never happened. Something just as startling did. As I watched her walk away she disappeared. Vanished in thin air. One minute she was there, the next she was gone, like that. I asked the gas station attendant if he’d seen the woman in white. “No, brah, see nothing.” It suddenly felt real chilly inside my airconditioned 10-passsenger van.

I found Waimea School library full of kids that Friday afternoon. The library was cool and quiet, I was hot and sweaty. “Are you okay?” a librarian asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” “I’m not really sure,” I told her, “but I think I just gave a ride to a woman who may have been Madame Pele.” The librarian had a sympathetic smile. “I know,” she said. “It happens a lot here.” That night at a dinner party hosted by Patti Cook, who knows everybody in Waimea, I told my story and asked if the other guests if they had ever seen that woman hitchhiking along the Queen’s highway, or walking about their town. Now, Waimea’s a very small town, and surely someone would have seen a woman in a white dress with charcoal dreadlocks who knew a little too much about old volcanoes but nobody ever had. At least that’s what they told me. These stories are excerpted from Rick Carroll’s new book Madame Pele: True Encounters With Hawaii’s Fire Goddess, published by Bess Press, Honolulu. $11.95. MTW

People always ask me why I’m a vegetarian. Truth be told, I’m not really a vegetarian. I mean, sure, I had a fateful day in my college years that involved a bad hangover and one too many hotdogs. Take it from me—that much kielbasa could kill anyone’s craving for a cut of meat. But really, I’m just a vegetarian wannabe. I still eat seafood on the sly. Gilled fish, shelled fish—any old bottom dweller will do. I stuff myself silly with coconut-crusted panseared sea flesh because I’m sick of tofu. I’ve eaten lots of tofu, and I’m totally tired of it. Really, how much bean protein can you take? I soaked it, stir-fried it, wrapped it. But even on a good day, there’s little about the texture that makes me want to actually eat it. That’s what I thought until I ate my first meal at Fresh Mint Vietnamese Vegetarian restaurant in Paia. These people take tofu to a new level. The words “veggie ham” or “soy fish” may not sound appealing when read from a menu, but put them on a plate with some mint sprigs and you’ll have yourself something to sing about. I started with the Spicy Lemongrass Soup ($6.95), an oversized vat of spaghetti noodles and veggie beef swimming in fresh herbs, onions, bean sprouts and— you got it—tofu. Slurping down the first spoonful, I knew this was no ordinary mock meat. Juicy, chewy and soaking in creamy broth, the brown bits of sweet beef made this soup a hearty helping. With the soup gone, I needed an appetizer. Fresh Mint offers rice paper rolls for every season. I went for the Summer Rolls, a wrap of veggie ham and tofu with spring onions, bean sprouts, basil and a wad of vermicelli. Now that’s a lot of bean in one bite. The veggie ham reminded me of its Canadian kin—thin and pink and salty, blanketed in a bed of iceburg lettuce. I would have liked more shredded veggies in the roll, but dipped in that warm buttery peanut sauce, it didn’t really matter what was inside. The salads come with their own sampling of soy—Green Papaya, Soy Chicken or the special Fresh Mint with a choice of

soy seafood. I ordered the papaya salad, a festive mix of raw papaya, carrots, onions, veggie shrimp and beef in a tangy, palate-cleansing dressing. I go nuts for papaya salad and this one didn’t disappoint. The soy shrimp alone made me want to say goodbye to real seafood forever. It was a hard choice for entrees. Annie, the L.A.-bound tourist at the table next to me, talked me into #13—the Fresh Lemongrass Tofu.

“It’s abso-lute-ly amazing,” She said. And it was. The soft cut bean comes drenched in lemongrass and turmeric and doused with a brushing of fresh ginger and sesame seeds ($8.95). Other tempting choices include the Golden Chicken Curry, the Vietnamese Burrito and the Soy Fish in Clay Pot, a slab of soy simmered in caramel sauce with fresh pineapples and ginger. All entrees come with a choice of jasmine or brown rice, steamed vegetables or green salad. “This is the best food we’ve had since we’ve been on Maui, and the owners are so nice,” said Annie, who was right again. Fresh Mint may have a no-frills atmosphere, but the friendliness of owner Mai Beck and husband Michael more than make up for it. Mai is all smiles all the time. Surprisingly, she never owned a restaurant before. She never even worked at one. “My friends and I are vegetarian and could never find a place to eat,” she said. “One day we just looked at each other and said, we need a vegetarian restaurant so we can go eat. I enjoy offering food and seeing people eat. It’s happy. It makes my heart happy.” Fresh Mint is located at 115 Baldwin Ave., Paia. Call 579-9144. Open Mon-Sun 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Catering and take-out available. MTW

BY SARAH CALLENDER

Lucky Duck Jake Shimabukuro is coming to town He says he never thinks about fame. He says it’s just luck. If it is luck, it certainly runs in the family. A few weeks ago, his grandmother won $8.9 million from a slot machine at the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas. Nonplussed by the fact that grandma just won more money than the entire budget of many small countries, he said they haven’t talked about it much. “She hasn’t decided what she’s going to do with the money,” he said. “She goes to Vegas every single year. She always stays at the same hotel, and plays the exact same ‘Mega Bucks’ machine. We tease her, [saying] all those years finally paid off.” The most noteworthy thing about Jake Shimabukuro isn’t that he started playing the ‘ukulele at age four, a time when most kids were still using their hands to hold their bottles. It’s not that Pure Heart, the band he started with friends in high school won four Hawaiian Grammy awards. It’s not even the fact that his nascent solo career has taken him around the world, or that it’s earned him a 2003 Favorite Entertainer of the Year award. The most noteworthy thing about him is the fact that all this affects the 27year-old musician about as much as seeing yet another beautiful sunset on the island. “This whole thing has been a surprise,” he said, laughing. “If it hadn’t happened, I’d probably be working at a pizza parlor right now.” A native of Honolulu, Shimabukuro first learned to play the ‘ukulele from his mother, who also taught public middle school students required to learn the instrument as part of their curriculum. While most of the other children took their weekly classes and happily left the instrument behind until the next session, he was the only one carrying around his own ‘ukulele.

DAY&NIGHT

Shimabukuro feels that the ‘ukulele and its lighthearted, vibrant sound is an extension and an accurate portrayal of his personality. “It is playful and childlike, you know?” he said. “But also diverse. Both relaxing and energetic.” Seems about right for a guy who dances like a madman at his shows, often ponders stage diving into the crowd and who has been repeatedly scolded by his manager for giving impromptu concerts at restaurants while on vacation. But to leave it at that dismisses his work ethic. Shimabukuro spends copious amounts of time practicing and developing his own songs. And like his mother and his younger brother, who also teaches the ‘ukulele, he freely gives of himself to others. He has worked with the Go For Broke Educational Foundation to drum up funds, has donated entire proceeds from an album to charity and, for the past three years, has been the key spokesperson for “Music is Good Medicine,” a program developed by the Queens Physicians Group to help educate people in good physical health practices. Through the program, Shimabukuro has played at and visited schools and hospitals, has taught ‘ukulele workshops, and promoted art in schools. The volunteer work is somehow crammed in-between his tours on the mainland and throughout Japan. In fact, his performance at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this weekend comes after several mainland-based concerts in New York City, and at college campuses opening for the Makaha Sons in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz. Immediately after his shows in Hawaii, he will fly to Japan to perform for a week and a half. And he is working on a new CD to be released in the spring. Either way, Jake’s not worried. Jake Shimabukuro will perform Jan. 2325, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater, One Cameron Way, Kahului. Call 242-SHOW (7469) for tickets. $28. MTW

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Spring Ahead Movies to fly kites by Hanks in the role that Sir Alec Guiness played in the original. This time the story is set in New Orleans, instead of London, where a group of bumbling thieves attempt to silence the landlady (Irma P. Hall) who stands between them and their stolen fortune. Jack Black is back on the big screen with a vengeance on April 2 with Envy, a revenge-based comedy about two best friends (Black and Ben Stiller) separated by the success of an invention by Black’s character Nick Vandermark. Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directs this bawdy comedy starring Rachel Weisz, Christopher Walken, and Ving Rhames. This first weekend of April also sees writer/director Guillermo del Toro (the Spanish Peter Jackson) delivering Hellboy, about a 1944 Nazi experiment that goes haywire and sends a red-skinned demon (Ron Perlman—The City of Lost Children) into the world before he’s intercepted by US agents.

January and February are slow months for notable film releases but by March, Democrats will have a remake of George Romero’s horror classic Dawn of the Dead with which to associate their belated struggle to oust the Republican criminals administering global recklessness from the White House. Debut director Zack Snyder attempts to fill Romero’s very large shoes with a story about millions of blood-thirsty zombies attacking the United States while a small group of survivors seek a safe haven inside a shopping mall in Everett, Washington. Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames and Mekhi Phifer star in this satirical horror film that promises much gory delight and gallows humor. On March 26, the Coen brothers will attempt to recover from their underwhelming Intolerable Cruelty with a remake of the 1955 British Ealing Studios masterpiece The Ladykillers, with Tom

Uma, Volume 2 [Kill Bill Volume 2, April ‘04] The adult Hellboy is a frightful investigator of the paranormal, sent on a mission that has him facing the evil that created him. Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions) and the inestimable John Hurt (1984) star in this high-concept thriller by one of cinema’s most original and inventive directors (see Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone). Skip to April 16 when Quentin Tarantino’s sequel to Kill Bill Volume 1 will bring an explosive finish to the story of the Bride’s (Uma Thurman) revenge. The closing chapter will pay homage to Italian spaghetti westerns where Kill Bill Volume 1 was a nod to Asian “grindhouse” films of the ‘70s. Johnny Depp and John Turturro team up with director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) on April 23 for Secret Window, based on a Stephen King novella, about recently divorced writer Mort Rainey (Depp) as he’s stalked by a psycho (Turturro) at his remote lake house. Brad Pitt fans will have something to crow about on May 14, when director Wolfgang Petersen’s historic epic Troy will dominate screens across the country. It’s 1193 B.C. when Prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) of Troy steals the Greek woman Helen (Diane Kruger) from Sparta’s Menelaus, setting up a battle like

never before on the big screen. Achilles (Brad Pitt) leads his Greek forces in a decade long battle against the Trojan armies led by Hector (Eric Bana—Hulk). Troy promises to bring epic cinema into the 21st century with a bang. The Day After Tomorrow opens on May 28 as a big-budget view into what the world will look like when the greenhouse effect and global warming make our planet a catastrophic disaster zone. Dennis Quaid plays a professor trying to save the world from collapse while attempting to save his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) from a sudden Ice Age in Manhattan. Writer/director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) has the experience to make this movie a stunning audience experience. As summer grinds down, a remake of The Stepford Wives will agonize audiences on June 11 with musical numbers sang by Faith Hill, Bette Midler and Nicole Kidman before Jackie Chan dips his ever shrinking toe into a remake of Around The World In 80 Days on June 16. The best movies of the spring should hold court well into the summer when the big blockbusters will make a play for your entertainment dollar, but getting through January and February will be tough going. MAUI TIME WEEKLY

JANUARY 22, 2004

19

Year of the Monkey Starting Thursday (today!) 2004 is the Year of the Green Wooden Monkey, to be exact. In the Chinese calendar, the Monkey is the beginning of the Metal cycle. This means that 2004 is a turning point for people whose lucky element is Metal, which stands for gold, jewelry or money. Therefore the financial business will boom in these coming two years. There will be a Chinese New Year celebration in Lahaina Town on Jan. 22 (today) featuring the traditional Chinese Lion Dance, as well as celebrations in Kihei and Wailuku later in the week. Check the Da Kine Calendar for all your Monkey Year options!

A New View Revue Sunday, 9 p.m. at Jawz Tacos in Kihei Ah, diversity—the other white meat! So the folks at Jawz Tacos have opened up a cool after-hours club called The Bamboo Video Lounge, which hosts DJs, dancing and videos every night! On Sunday, they’re showing the 1999 movie Flawless, starring Robert DeNiro and Philip Seymour Hoffman, about a bitter, homophobic security guard who suffers a stroke that leaves him partially paralyzed, leading him to seek the help of his drag queen neighbor. There’ll be homemade popcorn and cheap beers, too. Check the Grid for their other nights’ themes!

Uh Oh, Doughnuts Are Here Tuesday, 5:30 a.m. in Kahului Just when you thought you couldn’t live another day without ‘em, Krispy Kreme has opened a franchise right across from Costco in Kahului. The first store to open in Hawaii will offer 15 varieties of doughnuts, including their signature Hot Original Glazed, as well as Krispy Kreme’s signature coffee. And did you know that Krispy Kreme uses enough chocolate each year to fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools and a million pounds of sprinkles, which is equivalent to the weight of 145 elephants? That’s my kind of operation! Ouch, my teeth hurt and my belly aches already.

Bonnie & Cray Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the MACC Bonnie Raitt and the Robert Cray Band will certainly be giving us something to talk about with this blues, rock, R&B festival held outside at the A&B Amphitheater...

The seductive sounds of the Middle East are found more in Western electronica nowadays. Putumayo presents another winner, Sahara Lounge; a mesmerizing album of laid-back fusions of traditional Middle Eastern melodies, rhythms and instrumentation with cutting edge electronica, hip-hop beats and remixes. Algerian rai, Berber music, Sufi chants and Egyptian al-jeel meet dub, trip-hop, break beats and funk resulting in a hypnotic and captivating vibe. Sahara Lounge includes rare and previously unreleased tracks, many of which had only been available in the Middle East until now. Many of the artists now live in Europe or New York so interesting collaborations between Western DJs and traditional singers appear here, putting forth a truly compelling musical adventure through the heart of the Middle East. —Putumayo 2004 [JOE GATTO]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “PUTUMAYO WORLD MUSIC – 10TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION” The diverse music from far-flung shores has intrigued thousands of people thanks to Putumayo’s dedication to disseminating the recordings of artists from many of the world’s richest music scenes. The first CD is a representation of the more traditional sounds, as represented on a multitude of past Putumayo releases, while the second disc focuses on the party vibes and the funkier side of world music. —Putumayo World Music 2003 [JOE GATTO]

The

“ELEMENTS OF LIFE” Little Louie Vega is one half of Masters at Work (MAW). Along with his partner, Kenny Dope Gonzalez, they have taken house music to a new level in New York City. Their sensual mix of Latin rhythms and house music have been packing the dance floors of New York, Miami, the West Coast and abroad for several years. They have also produced profoundly soulful music from artists as diverse as Madonna, George Benson, and Los Amigos Invisibles. This latest effort from Vega is heavier on the Latin beats, like the famous MAW album Nuyorican Soul, than it is on the house tip. It keeps the dance floor packed in whatever style the song seems to be. Vega employs the sexy voice of his wife, Anané, on several tracks on which she sings in English, French, and her native Cape Verdian. “Quimbombo” is a sabrosa salsa tune and homage to his uncle, the late great salsero, Hector Lavoe. “Africa/Brasil” makes the connection between these two amazing musical places. A theme of spirituality runs through the album as well and chants to the Orishas ring out several times. —Vega Records [JOE GATTO]

FOREIGN LEGION “PLAYTIGHT” I love French Canada. I really do. Have you ever been there? It’s fantastic! Aside from being hella cold, it offers so many great things. Gambling, prostitution, great snowboarding, shopping and the best strip bars in the world. Best thing about Quebec (and all of Canada for that matter) is that the American dollar is worth almost twice as much as the Canadian. And the women are supermodel quality. My favorite thing to eat in Quebec is poutine. It’s this incredible concoction of French fries, cheese curds and piping hot gravy. I don’t understand why we—the most obese country in the world—haven’t caught on to this recipe. I think the Foreign Legion is headquartered in Quebec, because these guys got some of the heaviest and happiest tracks I’ve heard in a while. —Bomb Hip Hop 2003 [$AYFOO]

“SAHARA LOUNGE”

“EVERYONE DESERVES MUSIC” About three years ago, I was in a Portland music store, thumbing through discs and pondering life. I noticed a stage in one corner of the store but paid no mind. Then after pulling Radiohead’s Kid A and an old CCR disc from the impressive inventory I heard a band begin to play. The music was solid and the message was positive. Michael Franti and Spearhead were playing in this record store and impressing me with their unique and unmistakably positive sound. These guys just played at the Lahaina Civic and impressed everyone I am sure. Why bother with trying to fit this disc into a section or genre because there aren’t many discs that adhere to loving, peaceful and positive values all while blending a creative and trenchant sound like this. Pick this up and do us all some good. —BMG [SHANE LEE]

SAGITTARIUS: Breathe through the changes. You’ve got some good friends that support you. Be with those friends. Communication and writing becomes a more important part of everyday living. The Monkey enhances your career while teaching you something new. CAPRICORN: It’s your turn to be a wise money manager. Your highest values will be taken to task. All that glitters is not gold. Eat the kind of food that people ate 500 years ago. The Year of the Monkey enhances travel, education and politics. AQUARIUS: You are the swollen bud about to bloom into a flower. Your season is here so wake up and live. Your struggle will be between spiritual principles and technological needs. Monitor your personal health. The Monkey brings red-hot sex, a need to let go, and an enhanced intuition. PISCES: What was once a creative block is now an object of beauty. You visit people that are sick, shutin or in prison. Doing good deeds will help your subconscious. The Year of the Monkey will lift relationship constrictions and enhance partnerships. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Jim Montgomery 1/24/55, Gloria Nayler 1/25/50, Elijah Wood 1/28/80 kozmickev@sunset.net

Food on the Brain For those of you who kept asking me, “Where’s Satan?” “Who is Satan?” “Why can’t I be Satan?” whenever I saw you out last week, lookie here: Satan is a concept—not necessarily a particular person. He’s just a name I arbitrarily give someone who tries to instigate trouble, mayhem and drinking. Generally drinking. He changes faces week to week. He could live in Lahaina or Louisiana or even London. He drinks in dive bars and the fanciest of restaurants. He causes trouble indiscriminately. He sometimes experiences selective memory loss. But most importantly, he likes to have fun. And he knows who he is... Last Wednesday, BJ and I met Rudi at the Breakwater in Lahaina for a little dancing with DJ Boomshot and tall tales with Sal the bartender. He really had us going for a while with accounts of his former employment in the adult film industry. “Wow, but you look so innocent!” I said, more gullible than usual due to a few Tuaca shots. BJ and I were almost certain he did look a little familiar when he finally broke it to us that he was just kidding. Yeah, right. BJ had her little red iZone, which is like a mini Polaroid camera, and she snapped away at all revelers present, including one hapless Howard Ahia. Instant gratification is a highly underrated sport, you know. When we decided to ride our bikes over to the Sly Mongoose with Lezlie in her stilettos on BJ’s back pegs, BJ and I had food on the brain. While Lezlie downed her Bacardi Cokes, we contemplated a ride over to Safeway for a little Brie and baguette action. Some guy was trying to pick up on Lezlie when we were ready to go, so we prepared our bikes in front of the door for a quick getaway. “Sorry, my ride’s leaving,” Lezlie said to the guy, as she hopped on the back pegs of BJ’s bike. We made screeching noises all the way down the street and giggled maniacally en route to the supermarket. On Thursday, Jen, Kim and I rode over to the Sly Mongoose for dinner, where Donna— the bartender—had prepared a delicious meal of spaghetti with meat sauce and bread for her friends and bar guests. Jen had these long black and white striped fingerless gloves on that everyone called her Cat in the Hat sleeves. By the time Donna fed us, Kim was so hungry she was “salavatating,” which is a word intelligent people make up when they’re really hungry. After dinner and conversation, which ran the gamut from Why Men Suck to Why Boys are Stupid—yeah, it wasn’t a long road to travel—we were feeling a certain sated sense of bitter-coziness and decided to head to Kobe, where the Carroll Brothers were performing. When we walked in, Mike the singer shouted out mid-song “Holoholo!” To which Jen and I turned and waved, then quickly sat down. As we were sitting at the bar, the band played “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” while a friend of ours stumbled in, looking more than a little lopsided. He soon fell into a chair. “Ohmigod, look at [him],” said Jen. “He is so drunk!” “Yeah,” Kim said, “even his hair is drunk. He needs to go home and give his hair some coffee!” The peanut gallery commentary continued when we noticed two very thin, Britney-esque girls approach the bar. “She needs a hamburger,” said Kim. “A bacon cheeseburger,” said Jen. “And add a Biggie Fry,” Kim said. The girls were silent for a moment. “We’ll even give her a diet Coke to make her feel better,” said Jen. MTW
