Big Groundhog Update Throughout 2003 sightings of the Big Groundhog were exclusive to Punxsutawney, Pennslyvania. A little bit Upcountry, but by and large just Punxsutawney. That was true until last month when Wailea residents began seeing the large creature lurking just outside their backyards and golf courses. One resident, Stan Laughner of Kula was playing golf when he said he saw a “huge” groundhog come out of the ground near the 8th hole. Laughner said the animal “stunned” him. “I thought, who the heck is going to believe me,” he said later, still trembling from the encounter, but explaining that he felt he had a “civic duty” to come forward. “It’s for real, guys. It is going to grab a baby.” Many people have been reluctant to come forward with their experiences concerning the infamous animal. The latest report came from Mary (last name withheld by request) who said she heard it in a wild area behind the Grand Wailea. “It raised the hair on my neck,” said Mary, who thought the groundhog could easily live off the hundreds of deer she often sees in the area. “It was the weirdest thing I heard in my life.” One anonymous resident contacted Maui Time by phone. “I have heard the groundhog loud and clear a couple of nights ago and so did my neighbors,” she said. “We were coming out of Longhi’s at the Shops of Wailea late after having a few drinks—okay, a lot of drinks—and we heard its distinctive call. I am telling you this because I think the state should do something.” The state should do something. Last month, state biologists “disengaged” 18 snares set up to trap the Big Groundhog after numerous sightings of the animal were reported Upcountry. As yet few of the trademark claw marks have been sighted.
The elusive beast Last week, the Wailea Blue Golf Course marshal found a 100 lb. deer carcass on the course near the snack shack. But he said he “saw no evidence of it being killed and/or eaten.” Just how the Big Groundhog got to Maui is a mystery. Most agree that the animal is an exotic pet that escaped from a home zoo. Rumors abound as to who might have owned the groundhog, but as yet, nothing conclusive has been learned. According to a big game and fish biologist with extensive experience concerning big groundhogs, large predatory groundhogs are not native to Hawaii. Yet markings left in ravines near Wailea are consistent with those of a groundhog. Hair samples taken by the biologist are being flown to the University of Arizona for immediate DNA testing. Results should be available within the next two weeks. To assist the authorities, Maui Time will be compiling information on the Big Groundhog. Those hearing or seeing the Big Groundhog are asked to call us and explain where, when and what you saw or heard and what you were smoking when the incident occurred. We will then alert state wildlife officials as necessary. (Apologies to Maui Weekly.) MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the owner of a certain local coffee shop. You are, hands down, the rudest and most anal proprietor of any business ever! First you walk and stand between a friend and I while we are trying to hold a conversation and eat the food we just bought—your ass was literally in our faces. Then you gave me the third degree about getting the bathroom key when I just finished eating. And as if that’s not enough, I overheard you telling some people you just kicked out of your outside seating area “I don’t give a shit about customer satisfaction, I do this to make money.” Every time I get near you and your smug condescending energy I have to fight off an overwhelming urge to pound you. Customer satisfaction is what keeps you afloat, so I’d let your employees handle the service end of things from now on. Or else more people might find out how much of a punk you are and go somewhere else.

Looking In Our Bedrooms The Air Force begins flight tests over Kihei Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a… yeah, it’s a plane. A United States Air Force De Havilland DHC6-300 Twin Otter, to be exact. But be careful looking up at it—it’s carrying a couple fairly good-sized lasers. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the U.S Air Force began flying the twin-prop Otter between Kahului and Kihei as part of a series of “Standoff Intelligence Detector Flight Tests.” The tests, which the Air Force says are to “demonstrate that a laser can covertly illuminate a nighttime scene to provide intelligence-quality imagery,” are Maui’s contribution to the President George W. Bush’s “War on Terror.” They are Maui’s role in the federal government’s gradual eroding of our own civil liberties and privacy. For 50 years, the U.S. Navy used Kaho’olawe to test its ships’ gunnery skills. In a few months, the U.S. Army will kick up a large section of the Big Island with one of its new Stryker Brigades of light-armored vehicles. With Hawaii still as militarized as ever, it would seem
almost unfair if Maui got left out of the party. The 160 or so test flights over the next three years will be pretty straightforward: The plane circles over the Maui Research and Technology Park in Kihei at night, shooting laser beams down to the ground to “image” buildings and vehicles. “The aircraft would fly in a circle around the primary image sites at Premier Place, AF Remote Maui Experiment Site and Haleakala Ranch,” stated the March 2003 EA, referring to Air Force offices in the Kihei area. “Time permitting the aircraft would also image boats and vehicles in Maalaea and Kahului harbors.” The Air Force insists these flights will not have any “significant” effect on the environment. But local critics have questioned this confidence, especially as stated in the official Environmental Assessment (EA). “The EA acknowledges that an endangered avian species, the Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel, could be found in the South Maui target area, and observes that the mating season

Eisenhower proposed an “Open Skies” policy of allowing free traffic of spy planes over both the U.S. and Russia. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev killed the idea by saying all the U.S. wanted to do was “look in our bedrooms.” It’s increasingly obvious that Washington isn’t content with just looking into overseas bedrooms. Think of the current trends— increased surveillance of all airline passengers, secret military tribunals and talk of making secret checks of library borrowing records. Do we want to live in a nation where we’re constantly being “imaged” by high-flying aircraft? Do we have a choice? MTW
of the species occurs during the time of the proposed tests,” noted the group Maui Peace Action in its comments on the test assessment. “The EA does not address the fact that the species is nocturnal in its flights from the ocean to the mountain, and is highly sensitive to distraction by light.” Far scarier is that the Air Force assessment says the flights are so vital that canceling them would “discourage the advancement in nighttime optical imaging capabilities.” Air Force officials added that “current systems would not be able to meet the surveil-
lance community needs for intelligence gathering on enemy forces.” Enemy forces? In boat harbors? Doesn’t this bother anyone? These are complex and serious surveillance technologies being tested—right here, on Maui. While they unquestionably have applications for finding terrorists in sprawling cities oversees, you have to wonder if the U.S. Government is coming to the conclusion that our own cities will be future battlegrounds and our own citizens will be the enemies. LOCALNEWS MONDAY, JAN. 19 State land and natural resources officials will be spending more money on Keoneoio (La Perouse Bay) and Ahini-Kinau in hopes of “protecting” it. On Jan. 18, the Maui News reported that the state wants to use $1 million in grants from the tourism industry to hire a couple rangers and buy portable toilets for the delicate marine environments. “There was a portapotty here in the past and it was overused, shot at and burned,” Judy Edwards of the group Friends of Keoneoio told the Maui News. “Maybe we’ll eventually get a permanent bathroom and out of that might come a parking lot. Of course, that would change the character of the whole place.” The story does a fine job of nailing down the haole perspective on La Perouse, but completely ignores another, far more militant view from local Hawaiians. They feel that even the presence of kayakers, portable toilets and rangers damages La Perouse, which they consider a sacred place of healing. As a result, whenever the state holds a La Perouse hearing, Hawaiians pack the meeting room with emotional, angry people giving their own definition of “protection”: that the state at least put a stop to illegal kayak operators there, if not shut the place down entirely.
TUESDAY, JAN. 20 The Maui News isn’t normally a paper you get mad at. You read a story, maybe shrug your shoulders slightly, then go on to something else like making a sandwich or taking a nap. Today’s is different. Or rather, one small blurb buried in a long piece on the reconvening of the Hawaii
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
State Legislature is different: “There is $900,000 in the supplemental budget to build a new restroom at Lahaina Harbor, although [Republican Assemblyman Brian] Blundell thinks that’s probably too much.” Really? Oh, I think $1 million for a new restroom is about right—If you’re going to gild the faucets with 24k gold, panel the walls with polished marble and station some dude inside to dust your hands and give you a warm towel after you’ve washed your hands. “Probably too much.” What’s going to be in there, satellite TV hook-up with all the big fights on pay-per-view? If Wailea had a boat harbor, sure, I could see the restrooms costing about a million bucks. But everything in Wailea costs a million bucks. In Washington, they may use up a million bucks in tissue paper every time someone sneezes, but out here on Maui that kind of money still means something. Think of what the island could get if that dough went to public transportation or health care. Okay, maybe not, but aren’t public transportation and health care just a tad bit more important than glitzy Lahaina Harbor restrooms?
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 21 Speaking of restrooms, Dubya made his annual State of the Union Address last night. Remember last year’s speech? The one with all the blatant lies about Iraqi nuclear weapons and ties to Al Qaida? Well, he didn’t talk about that last night. But he managed to say a lot of really slick things like “And no one can now doubt the word of America.” In any case, Congressman Ed Case (D, Brother of AOL Boss Steve Case) sent his blistering response real quick, too. “I agree with the President that we are on the right track in the war on terrorism,” he said. Okay, so he wasn’t

as blistering as I originally thought. Hmmm… maybe this next sentence: “I agree that we must finish the job in Iraq and Afghanistan; the consequences of walking away now are not acceptable.” Wait a sec— Case used the word “agree” eight times in his response. Sure, he hedged his agreement, asking why Bush basically lied about Iraqi nuclear weapons and what he was going to do about $7 trillion in debt, but really—this goes to the heart of the problems with the Democratic Party. Whatever happened to the party that vehemently disagreed with the Republicans?… In today’s Maui News, Marconi Dioso of Kihei wrote a brief letter saying one of the paper’s earlier stories on American casualties neglected to list the 4,374 U.S. combat deaths from the FilipinoAmerican War, which lasted from 1899 to 1902. A fun fact about that war, which Dioso neglected to mention, is that 200,000

Looks like the police are now losing their fear of car thieves. Today a Maui police officer shot and killed Wailuku resident Lisa Kehaulani Tomita Kaina, 27, after a highspeed chase that ended in Paia. Police say Kaina—a mother of three who apparently managed to rack up 27 arrests and five felony convictions in her life—allegedly stole a white 2004 Cadillac, crashed it into a sign on Baldwin Ave., then tried to run over an officer approaching from the left, who promptly shot her in the head. This makes the third time in the last year that Maui PD has shot someone. In any case, the woman’s family wondered why the cops had to kill her. “She liked cars,” the dead woman’s brother told the Maui News. “She was always independent. She liked to do things on her own.” MTW

According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, marine biologists now believe that whales are losing their fear of humans. “You’re seeing a younger generation of whales who are more comfortable with interaction,” Christine Brammer, an Oahu program coordinator with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, told the Advertiser. “Some are not fearful of humans at all.” Biologists and animal behavior experts theorize it’s because we’re not spearing and skinning them on the high seas like we as a people once did. Now maybe it’s just me because I saw that one Simpsons episode when Lisa frees that dolphin from the aquatic park and it turns out to be the King of the Dolphins who returns to his kingdom and then rallies his forces to invade the land and kill all the humans, but this can’t be good news. Sure, fine, whales stop being afraid of us—big deal, they live way out in the ocean. How many of us will run into a fearless devil-may-care whale during the course of our day-to-day lives? But what happens if this is part of a wider trend— what if all animals on earth are starting to get wise to us? What if—and this terrifies me just thinking of it—what if goldfish lose their fear of us? We could go to feed them and then…

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD JOY TO THE WORLD! Jonathan Cantu, 39, and Charles J. Kern, 50, each feeling slighted at the other’s Christmas gift, smacked each other over the head with flowerpots and were hospitalized (San Rafael, Calif.). And Brandi Nicole Nason, 20, also dissatisfied with a gift, allegedly tossed a Molotov cocktail into her ex-mother-in-law’s house, causing $200,000 in damage (Hermosa Beach, Calif.). And a woman was arrested for beating a man with a Christmas tree after he complained that the gifts he was carrying were heavier than the tree that she was carrying (Victoria, British Columbia). And after Donna Simmons-Groover won her apartment complex’s Christmas-lights competition, a losing neighbor ripped out part of her display in a rage (Jensen Beach, Fla.).
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT The Singapore government decided in December to list its high-tech sewagewater conversion plant as a major tourist attraction; Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong drank a bottle of the purified waste to demonstrate that it is not only safe but tasty. And sanitation officials in Oslo, Norway, said they will soon create an adventure park within the city’s sewer system, including rafting, theater performances, artwork on the walls, and an area for weddings and parties.
FEEDING THE HUNGRY For New Year’s, the Japanese department store Mitsukoshi Ltd. offered traditional “bento box” meals, but expressly for dogs (at least, dogs whose owners were willing to pay about US$175 each). The ornate, two-layered container housed 30 delicacies, including pork dumplings,

black beans, strawberry mousse and green tea, and was a bold attempt by the store to pitch to Japan’s growing upscale pet market.
QUESTIONABLE NEW PRODUCTS Triumph International, the Swiss maker of unmentionables, presented a prototype of an anti-smoking brassiere containing perfumes (including lavender and jasmine) that are turned unpleasant by tobacco smoke. And in November, Jones Soda Co. of Seattle bottled 6,000 units of turkey-and-gravy soda, which, remarkably, has the consistency and taste of pureed turkey and gravy; also remarkably, the entire run sold out, with some bottles offered at a huge premium on eBay.
WEIRD SCIENCE A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a woman who conceived three sons with her husband was biologically unrelated to two of them. Doctors posited that the woman herself was part of an nonidentical-twin pair that fused at an early stage of her mother’s pregnancy and that only her blood cells are hers, alone, while cells from her eggs and other tissues may have come from her sister’s fetus.

According to Lund and others, the arousal is much different than sexual desire and in fact is not satiated by orgasm. Suspected causes are chemical imbalances, seizures and irregular blood flow. “It’s just a horror,” said a 71-year-old sufferer; it “never stops, it never lets up.”

Contact Sport Football and politics should go hand in hand Super Bowl’s this weekend. While many drinking and hormonally charged viewers can’t wait to see the curves on the Coors twins, there is another commercial that would have America talking. But you can’t see it. You won’t see the ad that won the MoveOn.org national contest made by concerned Americans who care about fundamental freedoms as much as football. CBS won’t air it Sunday. CBS officials say the ad is too controversial to air. Of course, this is nonsense because no one’s actually seen it. CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech orchestrating a blitz on the public. CBS arbitrarily turned down ads from not only MoveOn.org but also People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Of course, past Super Bowls have become political statements condoning and applauding national campaigns of war with presidential administration members speaking before kickoff. Politics has everything football has. Politics is the most intense contact sport in the world. Decisions made in the political arena determine life and death for mil-
lions of people. It is time we moved from the sidelines and get involved in the game. The Super Bowl should be the Super Session of Politics. The public will never be as interested in politics as beer if it is not placed on the national agenda. The Super Bowl is a national past time. Politics should be included. Ads will add a great deal to our public discourse. Our national holiday of sports should include all points of view. It’s difficult enough to raise sufficient funds to air political ads that are contrary to the current administration. It’s unAmerican to stifle voices. Maybe the airing of this ad would create a new wave of awareness among Americans to be involved in public service. Politics can be an important sport in our American culture that we can follow with the same pursuit and passion as we do the gridiron. It’s our turn to create a political system that draws in people to participate and cheer. Political candidates can throw the hail-mary touchdown toss with phrases that make the heart skip. The speeches can spark someone’s belief in hope to make the impossible possible and to stay in the stands no matter how cold it gets because we believe in our ability to make a better government.

But football will dominate the weekend and Monday’s headlines. It’s amazing how people are devoted to helmet knocking football yet don’t want to hear elected officials talk about our future. Is it too much to ask for small stands around the stadiums where citizens can learn about important issues and not only the latest products companies want us to buy? Is it possible to have Monday Night Forums that pack the stands with hundreds of thousands of educated citizens painted in their political position colors screaming for positive change in politics? It would be fantastic if Americans followed presidential races as closely and with such passion as football. On the final weekend of foot-

Suffer The French Schoolchildren Hatred Bush hath wrought Why do they hate us? And where do they get their hatred from? These questions haunted me and three other American visitors as we studied a huge display of cartoons drawn by local schoolchildren assigned to convey their impressions of the United States. Panel after grisly panel depicted the United States, George Bush and those ubiquitous symbols of American commercial culture—McDonald’s and Coke—as murderous, predatory and gleefully vicious. Obese Uncle Sams chopping up Iraqi children with a knife, their blood gushing across construction paper. A leering Statue of Liberty holding a hamburger in one hand while firing missiles at dying Afghan civilians across the ocean. The American flag, its bars transformed into prisons for the

cartoons’ messages. They see Bush as a vicious, thoughtless warmonger with fascist tendencies, Americans as arrogant brutes who don’t give a passing thought to the innocent people who die at the hands of their government and rapacious corporations as hegemonic steamrollers that crush cultural distinctiveness and independence in their ceaseless quest for the almighty dollar. They can’t believe that we feel more entitled to use military force than Luxembourg or Monaco. What must Palestinian kids think of us? It would be nice to see these opinions expressed with more subtlety and nuance. But their opinions are more right than wrong. Americans believe they’re exceptional. A Republican is someone who believes that we were right to invade Iraq. A Democrat is one who thinks we should have gone into Rwanda.

A baseball bat painted red, white and blue poised to smash a ball—which is a globe. The juxtaposition between the artwork’s ferociously angry imagery and the childish drawing styles of the third graders would disturb the most jaded reader. I didn’t see a single positive portrayal of the U.S. Organizers of Carquefou’s annual cartoon art festival had invited four American artists—Steve Benson of The Arizona Republic, David Horsey of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Kal of The Baltimore Sun and yours truly—to this industrial town in conservative western France to discuss the deteriorated state of FrancoAmerican relations. We’ve all used our cartoons to convey our dim opinion of the Bush Administration’s domestic and foreign policy agenda. We oppose the war in Iraq. We despise the French bashing (“freedom fries,” wine boycotts, high schools that have stopped teaching French) that has arisen since the Chirac government threatened to veto Bush’s Iraq war resolution in the U.N. Still, walking past those drawings these past few days felt like getting slugged in the stomach. Part of it was the sheer scale— there were more than 700 pieces on display. But the level of rage and vitriol against America and everything related to it (one kid even trashed Tropicana orange juice) surpassed prewar propaganda in Saddam’s Iraqi press. And these are kids. What a difference a hundred years makes: the Statue of Liberty, France’s second great gift to America after freeing it from England, was funded by millions of centimes collected by French schoolchildren. It hurts to see what Bush has done to our international reputation. We repeatedly explained that there’s more to the United States than George Bush. We pointed out that most voters supported Gore in the last election and that hundreds of thousands of Americans marched against the war. We argued that Americans are kind, big-hearted people. French attendees listened politely, and we were treated with the utmost kindness and hospitality, but their kids’ cartoons screamed: we hate you. That hurt. Of course, many of us don’t give a damn whether French schoolchildren or anyone else think Bush’s United States is a land of butchers and thugs. Whether or not we care, however, it matters. MTW

Local reggae artist Marty Dread’s got a lot going on. There’s the gig in Lahaina, which he’s done lots of times. He’s got a recording session with Willie Nelson, which he hasn’t done lots of times. He’s got to practice, prepare and at some point pack for a 10-day tour. In other words, the slippah-less Rasta has to do his laundry. Right now. He heads to the Haiku Laundromat for a quick coin-op wash-n-dry, carrying his load gracefully on his shoulders. On the way, a couple of Maui-made good ol’ boys in a once-white pick-up lean out the passenger side. “Hey…Mah-tee Dread!” they yell. “How yoo doin’ mahn?” They’re all spunk and grin. So is Marty. He rambles over to the truck holding his hand outstretched, slapping them each five from the side. Maybe he knows them, maybe he doesn’t. He approaches everyone he meets with the same buoyant warmth. Must be why everyone seems to like him so darn much. Wherever he goes, he creates a small stir, attracting the shy-smiled attention of everyone from apronwearing waiters to tan-skin tootsies. It’s true what his friends tell him: He might as well be the Mayor of Maui. He’s not hard to miss. Scratchy dreads that fall down to his ass and a round face revealing little remnants of a goatee long-gone. Caramel eyes that crinkle upward when he laughs. And bare feet. Always bare feet. Well, nearly always. He’s got a big presence but carries himself lightly.
“I’m believable,” he said. “My actions follow my words. You never hear any scandal about me, because there is none.” If the man has dirty laundry, it’s only in the literal sense. “Everything I’ve worked for in the last ten years is suddenly happening,” he said. A remix of one of his hits, the upbeat “Free and Single,” will soon appear on a Def Jam compilation album, putting him on showcase with big names in reggae and hip hop. He has more tours lined up than he has shirts to wear. And then there are the recordings scheduled with high caliber musicians. Willie Nelson’s the first.
It’s 10 past 10 on a Sunday morning. Marty is waiting outside the Beat Shack Recording Studio in Paia, stirring with the nervous energy that comes when you invite a superstar into your world. Last October, Marty played along with Willie at the Oskie Rice Arena in Makawao at a benefit concert for the Montessori Middle School. That night, Marty went home and wrote a song called “Take No Part” with Willie in mind. Today, the two performers will record the single together. With the sound of wheels rolling over gravel, Marty shifts his weight, then takes a deep breath. “Here comes Willie now,” he whispers. Willie and Marty walk side by side into the studio, a darkened tworoom set-up that smells a mix of patchouli and skunkweed. Willie’s wearing a Charley’s tank top and New Balance running shoes, complete with a cream-colored Willie

stitched on the sides. And, of course, he bears his signature braids, gray hairs loosely unraveling at the ends. He is quiet. He shakes everyone’s hand and introduces himself, subtle and unassuming, smiling behind his weathered skin and sand-white beard, wearing youthful eyes behind all those lines. Willie takes his place behind a dark window, wraps headphones around his ears and begins to sing. Separated from the rest of the studio by glass and light, Willie croons into the mic, his vocals coming out of nowhere like the voice of an omnipotent father. His singing is so subtle, it’s almost speaking—raw and throaty, then breathy and sentimental. “I don’t want to take no part… in this war that’s going on,” he sings in duet with Marty’s voice. “Someone told me follow my heart… to help me make a brand new start.” Marty shakes his head in rhythm, curling his toes in delight. He stands behind the microphone, rocking back and forth on his knees, resting his chin on his index and thumb. He looks just like The Thinker. He does that a lot.
While Marty listens, Willie grabs his guitar, Trigger Jr., and begins to lay a few licks. Nothing moves in the room save the needle on the sound system. After the playing and accompanying reverent silence, Marty asks Willie if he will film a few clips for a Marty Dread documentary supposed to come out this summer. Willie instantly and graciously obliges. “I’ve been hearing Marty’s music for a while and am so impressed by what he writes,” Willy said. He speaks slowly but methodically. “Marty’s a spiritual man, and I believe he has a place here on planet Earth to change the minds of the people from war to peace. I’m proud to be a part of it.” Marty is standing off in the corner, listening. For the first time that day, he has nothing to say.
Later, Marty and I are sitting in Colleen’s—he with a Chai, me with a House Brew. Bob Marley’s “We’re Jammin’” is playing in the background. I ask him to tell me his favorite cuss word. “Let’s see,” he said, paus-

ing. “What are my choices again?” We count off more cuss words than we have fingers. Shit. Damn. Ass. “I guess I’m going to have to say ‘Fuck’,” he finally said. “After all, it’s so versatile.” Marty is into versatile. The release of his album Versatile Roots in 1994 marked the beginning of his recording career, as well as the launching of his own record label, Five Corners Music. The album includes Marty’s first major radio hit, “Wicked Wahine,” as well as a song he’s now known for, “No Mo’ Slippah.” Marty was born Martin Charles Hennesy in 1969, just as the sun was rising over the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. For that reason, his mom called him the Lucky Red Son. His luck brought him to Maui at age eight, after his family heard they could eat fruit from the trees. Maui soon became Marty’s muse. A poet, a painter, a 4.0 student, at age 18 he won a spot on a trip with other kids to visit the Soviet Union. “Picture a gymnasium full of 2,000 kids, Russians on one side, Americans on the other,” he said. “The room was dead silent. I mean, dead silent. No one was talking, we were all just staring at each other.” Marty said he grabbed a guitar and banged out the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.” Suddenly, the room was in an uproar. “All the Russian kids rushed forward, hugging us, kissing us, exchanging addresses,” he said, laughing. “It was then I realized an important lesson: Music is universal, something that can break down barriers and unite all people.” It’s really not a surprise that Bob Marley became Marty’s biggest musical influence. “I lost my own father at an early age, and Marley became sort of a father figure to me,” he said. “There’s a lot of spiritualism and truth to what he says. I thought, wow, this is what I want to do.” Following Marley’s lead, Marty let his high-school hair nap and knot. That’s when he got his name. “When the album Natty Dread came out, people started calling me
Marty Dread, and it stuck,” he said. What if he ever decides to shave his head? “They’d have to start calling me Marty Dreadless,” he said. “Or better yet, Marty Head.” When he came back from the Soviet Union, the Dreaded One started a band and began writing music. He has so far recorded seven albums, performed at the largest reggae festival in the world and played before thousands in Tahiti. He’s opened for reggae greats including Ziggy Marley, Steel Pulse, Jimmy Cliff, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, the Wailers, and more. He jammed with Al Green at last year’s annual Azalea Festival in North Carolina. Marty said that when he writes his music, he goes to a secret cliff in Haiku—just him, a notebook and a guitar. “Melodies come to me like gifts,” he said. “Sometimes even in my dreams.” He keeps his pad and pencil close. He’s got more songs in his notebooks than he’s got money to record. But of the seven albums he has recorded, two have been nominated for Best Reggae Album of the Year by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts. As he’s aged, Marty’s songwriting has shifted. His focus in his late 20’s was romance—mostly, he said, because romance sells on the radio. Scan his album The Hits (19932003) and you’ll hear him “Going Back to Tahiti” to find his wahine, feeling “Ready for Love” and looking for that special “Partner for Life”— or as he says, “searching for my queen.” He even released an entire album of love and angst called Reggae for Love. But now Marty’s in his mid 30’s. He’s dropped the “I love you, babies” for songs stamped with a more social meaning. His 2001 recording On the Beach features songs like “United We Stand” and a live version of “Live and Let Live”—both inspiring others to rise above fear from world war and tragedy. “Win the fight,” he implores the

people, “[with] positive action.” Marty is no politician, but he’s got the rouse in him to rally the masses. Slapped on the back of his Ford truck are stickers proclaiming War is Not the Answer and George Bush Doesn’t Speak For Me. “I have no faith in politics, never did,” he said. “Politics divide people into the right and left. Rasta philosophy unites all people.” Then he sighed. “Fuck taking sides,” he said. “Let’s all be together.” Marty takes his “let’s be together” philosophy to the stage, making it a point to be close to the crowd. “I used to perform with a guitar until I got my hands on a wireless mic,” he said. “Then I became an animal.” Seeing him in concert is to watch him bounce around the stage, singing with his hands—

pointing and waving and holding his heart. He shakes and slides on his soles. He flings those dreads over his head. For a moment, they look like a halo. His band has been around eight years. His mates include Joel Schanker on the drums, Kaipo Haleakala on the bass and Chaka Taylor on the keyboards. Marty still does the vocals. “Other people can sing circles around me, but not many singers really connect with the crowd,” he said. “When I’m on stage, I get across to the audience.” Maybe even more so off the stage, when he zips through the room with the free spirit of a little boy. Marty has crowd connection down, but that doesn’t stop him from adding moments of introspec-

tion to the stage. In any set, in any song, he may close his eyes as if singing to someone he only sees in his head. But then, without warning, he’ll snap on Extrovert Marty and shout out a booming “Everybo-dy make some noise!” Whatever he does, it works. The crowd at his regular Monday night Hard Rock gig bump-and-grind to the beat, while Marty stutters his tongue in reggae speak. “NOW we’re having a party in the place!”
Many people lose themselves in the rock star image, but not Marty Dread. “Maui keeps me grounded—the escape to nature, the sun, the stars, the elements that teach us the simplicity of life,” he said. “Rasta’s not a

He’ll only rest when he marks his message—a world free of fear, where people aren’t afraid to act. “My mission is for every continent to hear my music and embrace it like the people of Maui have,” he said. Idealistic? He’s the first to admit it. But when you’re trying to change the world, you have to think

Fruits of the Sea At Valley Isle Seafood

We live on an island, so it should be really easy to get good quality seafood at mom and pop markets at a fair price. But there is no central public fish market or spot where local fishermen pull up to the beach in colorful boats to sell the morning’s catch like they do in the Caribbean. So when I need fresh sea bass to make ceviche, a whole opakapaka to share with friends or the highest-grade ahi, I go to Valley Isle Seafood. They are one of the biggest wholesalers on the island and make fantastic lunch specials, various types of poke, squid luau, sashimi and sushi to go. I’ve been buying my fish there for several months, but was a bit leery of the traditional Hawaiian lunch specials, thinking they would be too fatty or of low quality. I was wrong. They only use the freshest ingredients, make everything there daily, use no MSG and only sell the best products. John and Vicki Keana’aina have owned Valley Isle Seafood for two years. The couple met while living in San Diego. They moved back to Maui to work for the cable company. When the opportunity to own their own business arose, they jumped at it.
Vicki runs the show with her wit. John spent his youth on the Big island fishing, farming organic vegetables and cooking with the other men in his family. I grew up on my grandmother’s Southern Italian calamari stew, so I’m always eager to try different types of squid creations. John’s squid luau is a stew made with luau, or taro leaf, that is boiled down for an hour until it is soft like spinach and melts in your mouth. The stew has a sweet base of coconut milk. He also doesn’t skimp on the calamari. The small one is a nice appetizer and the large can be a whole succulent meal for $6.99. There are five different lunch specials of varying sizes and prices, as well as a daily special. I tried the heaping plate of Kalua Pork, Lau lau, lomi salmon, ahi poke, and two scoops of rice for $7.99. I ate this mountain of food at Ho’okipa Lookout while watching the sun descend behind the West Maui Mountains. I was stuffed, but it didn’t leave me feeling lethargic. They have an assortment of poke—ahi, shrimp, tako, au, salmon and aku, when in season—available by the pound. Keana’aina makes them in different styles ranging from traditional Hawaiian, spicy, Korean and limu.
One of the fruits of the sea “You can be as creative as you want to be with them,” said John. He added that he generally just uses salt, ginger, garlic, sesame and Hawaiian peppers, as well as fresh sea greens to enhance the flavor. The fish and chips special is also fantastic. John doesn’t like the typical batter most places use to fry fish so he came up with his own way: a wash with eggs, coconut milk, a bit of mayo, dill, salt and pepper, which he then rolls in panko and browns to perfection. They are only $1.50 for a big chunk or $3.99 for the fish and chips special. They buy smart to keep prices down, shopping at the auctions, buying from local fisherman and even get some fish from Fiji and

Tonga. They also cater, so when planning a large party Valley Isle Seafood can meet the needs with 20 to 30 pounds of sushi, poke and a big pot of squid luau. This was my first experience with traditional Hawaiian food and Valley Isle Seafood’s healthy, high quality, made from scratch lunch specials. It is the ideal place to get a nice seafood lunch to take to the beach, an entire opakapaka to barbecue at Baldwin Park, or just some fine sashimi. Valley Isle Seafood is at 475 Hukilike St., Kahului, 893-0497. Open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat. Closed Sunday. MTW

Ace of Spades From Hideous Idiot to the Bone Jar to Radio Rehab Angelo Constantino is not the angel he wants you to think he is. Like Napoleon, Liberace and Cher before him, he is known to Maui only as “Ace.” Ace has been prolific in his attempts to open up eyes and ears to a different style of music and listening through his own musical and broadcasting career. Since his arrival 20 years ago, Ace has propagated musical alternatives with a “like it or not” attitude. Thrown off the air for his subversive broadcasting style, Ace’s combination of strippers and Slayer don’t go over well with The Man—aka the Pacific Radio Group. “I want the freedom to do what I want,” he said. “As soon as I started getting paid, it became a problem.” His previous band, Hideous Idiot, had a popular hardcore following amongst Maui’s underground subculture. They played mainly beach gigs, refusing to perform like monkeys in the larger venues for meager pay. However, that didn’t stop them from opening for the Toadies at the Lahaina Civic Center, where Ace met Johnny A from the Point 101.1 FM. A partnership was born. Johnny A asked Ace to be on his show, the Bone Jar, and he ended up co-hosting that show until it got booted. From the ashes of The Bone Jar, Ace started Radio Rehab, which he did for free, every Friday night from 8 p.m. to midnight. However, once PRG started paying him, they started imposing new “rules.” Ace got in trouble for doing, as he put it, “typical Howard Stern type stuff.” Like the time one the night when “the first girl to come in and dance naked to the Slayer song would win a free tattoo,” he said. No one ever said searching for freedom of expression was easy. Fearless in his quest to expose folks to

his musical philosophies and nonconformist attitude, he is undaunted by the powers that may have once stood in his way. “Now everybody’s a DJ!” he said. “And people are dance or trance or hop or bop— there’s so many different categories a DJ falls under, I always thought DJs were on the radio. And I’ve always been well, ‘DJ’—you play everything!” Ace said he’s reviving his popular Radio Rehab at Life’s A Beach in the spring. Currently you can catch his live format at Erik’s Seafood Grotto on Thursday nights, 10 to close, coupled with dollar drinks, sushi specials, and sushi eating contests. He’s not particular about the music he spins. He likes “everything”—hardcore, metal, country, dance and even a little George Jones here and there. He plays music both old and new school, from 50 Cent to the O-Jays and the Isley Brothers. He is also working on a new band. Ace said he isn’t interested in making money, but rather, just wants to play for the fun of it. “If I wanted to be a rock star I’d live in L.A. or New York,” he said. But mostly, Ace said he’s ready to do another radio show but can’t find the right venue. After the Bone Jar broke apart, Radio Rehab was on for three years, then lost its Friday night slot from 8 to midnight last year. The few shows done for Mana’o Radio didn’t pan out. So far no other radio stations have the balls to step up to Ace’s program. “I’ll spin Aretha Franklin followed by Slayer, you might hear some Johnny Cash and some Hatebreed. And then I may play some comedy or something. We try to make everyone happy, which you know, is hard to do.” Ace’s Radio Rehab is featured live at Erik’s Seafood Grotto in Lahaina, every Thursday, starting at 10 p.m. For more information, call 662-8780. The Big Bounce was Elmore Leonard’s 1969 initial venture into the crime fiction style that would remain his trademark. His witty and cynical dialogue resonates here on-screen as coming from a writer with equal parts skill and inspiration. Director George Armitage (Grosse Point Blank) juggles Leonard’s criminally flawed characters on the island of Oahu with quick timing and choice observations of their individual idiosyncrasies. Owen Wilson embodies Jack Ryan, Leonard’s iconic small-time thief, with a heart of something that glitters like gold. Jack is nearly ejected from Oahu when he bashes his construction boss Lou (Vinnie Jones Snatch) with a baseball bat in selfdefense. The surprising face hit sets up a movie’s worth of wry jokes, fistfights and eye candy of surfers on great waves and pretty girls in bikinis. The Big Bounce inhabits a film noir pastiche that emphasizes the upbeat nature of Armitage’s vision of romantic noir done in color. The glossy romance of Leonard’s atheist world is generated by Nancy (Sara Foster), the comely mistress
to evil construction company owner Ray Ritchie (Gary Sinise). Jack’s bat incident frees him to accept a job offer local judge Walter Crewes (Morgan Freeman) and exhibit his overwhelming desire for the nearby Nancy. Crewes (Freeman) effortlessly manipulates Jack’s weakness for pretty women into a $200,000 scam involving Nancy, Ray’s alcoholic wife Alison (Bebe Neuwirth) and Ray Ritchie’s cold hard cash.
The Big Bounce
★★★★★ Just as the Maltese Falcon was a leadweighted story ruse to get the characters (and audience) hot and bothered, the $200,000 cash pile at stake is just an excuse for Leonard’s criminally inclined misfits to get into bigger trouble. At the beginning of the story Jack gets out of jail and finds his harmonica has been stolen from his personal belongings. It’s a detail that will come up later as a defining possession that, while it doesn’t carry the same significance here as the watch
did in Pulp Fiction, pins the tone of the movie at a conversational pitch. Leonard’s characters talk as well as Tarantino’s, but they’re not as proud of it. The happy cynicism here is offhanded yet to the point. Morgan Freeman’s Walter becomes Elmore Leonard’s thematic voice in the story, as when he talks about God as “an imaginary friend for adults.” Freeman gives his standard outstanding performance by tweaking his delivery in ways that catch you rolling his words around in your head after he speaks. Owen Wilson’s Jack is the eternally quick-witted natural thief who needs to learn restraint, but is doomed to shed a lot more blood before that happens. It’s between Freeman and Wilson that the story keeps its comic momentum. The Elmore Leonard cinematic tradition that runs through movies like Get Shorty and The Big Bounce is humor as their main element. Where other Leonard films Jackie Brown and Out of Sight erred on the stately side seamy, Get Shorty and The Big Bounce share an irreverence that sparkles with wit and precision. There is an obvious exotic atmosphere in Oahu’s North Shore that The Big Bounce uses to divide its rapid fire verbal delivery and stolen car chases. We never question the lasting shots of surfers riding the North Shore’s infamous Pipeline as an essential aspect to the light-hearted crime thriller. Bad-peopledoing-bad-things-in-a-lovely-environment is a hook that The Big Bounce puts to cool use without ever giving away the meaning of its fluffy title. There’s still plenty of shadows in this sunny noir. MTW

Parrot Head Alert! Friday, 7 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater
Super Bowl XXXVIII Sunday, 1:25 p.m., on CBS in your living room or favorite sports bar Football! It’s the big game this weekend. Last game of the post-season, not counting the Pro Bowl, which I’ve always considered the post-post-season. But football—yeaahhh! Football! The sport that George Will said combined the two worst aspects of America: violence and the committee. Football! The sport of the great Red Grange, Joe Montana and Vince Lombardi, but also of the notorious O. J. Simpson, Randy Moss and Vince Lombardi. George Plimpton played football. Ronald Reagan pretended that he played football. Football—it’s good for what ails you. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
Okay, what the hell is a Parrot Head? Apparently, this is an affectionate title given to those loyal followers of Jimmy Buffett, with his infectious music and laidback island lifestyle. Extensive research has shown that most female Parrot Heads enjoy sailing, eating fresh crab and drinking all things rum, like to read historical romance novels, and looovvvee the Buffett. Of course, the male Parrot Heads can also be spotted in grass skirts with rubber sharks and birds poking out of their straw hats. All Parrot Heads, it seems, are activated by the popular hit, “Margaritaville.” And most can be seen repeating the title of Buffett’s best-selling boxed set—Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads—as their mantra. All in all, these creatures appear harmless, but I would keep my fingers out of the cage, just in case.

Doomsday Whistle Monday, 11:45 a.m. Yup, it’s that time of the month again. Time to blow the old Doomsday Whistle and make sure the old girl still operates. You remember the sound—that highpitched shriek that splits the eardrums for 45 seconds. It’s good for letting us know of all manners of impending disasters, like the hurricane, tsunami or blimp attack. Now if this was an actual emergency, you would be instructed when exactly to start panicking and looting your nearby town and/or municipality. Okay, the whistle wouldn’t instruct you, the authorities would. If the whistle knew what was good for it, it’d be getting itself the hell off this island. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

THE BLACK KEYS “THICKFREAKNESS” Take two guys from the Midwest, one guitar, one set of drums, an amp and stick them in somebody’s garage and you get the Black Keys. With the success of the White Stripes comes my hope that “the band” may once again be welcomed back into our listening world. Their disc Thickfreakness has such an edge to it and showcases “the band.” It does not try to outplay anyone else. It does not try to do anything more than play hard and solid. This is a raw sound that doesn’t bother worrying about swimming down the mainstream. Recorded on the legendary blues-based Fat Possum Records, the Black Keys make the label proud. My brother compared them to C.C.R. and I would not disagree… just turn it up a bit and swirl in a bit of Cream and garnish with Delta Bluesman Skip James. This is worthy! —Fat Possum Records 2003 [SHANE LEE]
FANIA ALL-STARS “QUE PASA: THE BEST OF THE FANIA ALL-STARS” The music of any genre was at its peak in the 1970s. Throughout this decadent decade all the best Latin musicians—Ruben Blades, Willie Colón, Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmieri and Celia Cruz, to name a few—recorded together as the Fania All-Stars. They toured all over the U.S., Europe, Africa and of course, Latin America, bringing the rich sounds of salsa to new audiences. Willie Colón, Ruben Blades and Hector Lavoe epitomized la salsa brava—the music of the working class—with its socially conscious lyrics. This salsa is tight, fast, funky, deep and uplifting. There are over 100 releases under the Fania label and this one is a good place to start. “Coro Miyare” opens up the dance floor and takes the listener into the confines of a sweaty, jam-packed salsa club. “Ella Fue” is a disco-ey, funny Latin fusion number that mixes Spanish and English. In addition, some Latin jazz songs and instrumental jams show the depth of this ‘70s super group. —Sony Music 2002 [JOE GATTO]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “FRENCH CARIBBEAN” Sometimes the French-speaking island nations of the Caribbean and their music get forgotten in the midst of the more popular reggae, salsa and merengue from the same region. Two main forms of music are featured here—compas and zouk. Compas comes from Haiti, is big on sexual entendres, and incorporates styles from around the Caribbean. Zouk—meaning “party”—is the music of Martinique and Guadalupe. This is some of the happiest music I have ever listened to. All the tracks utilize various percussion instruments, deep rhythms, horns, woodwinds and keys to transport the listener straight into a carnival parade. The beautiful harmonies and singing sound very sexy in French-Creole, too. This is the perfect islandstyle party music, no matter which island parties to it. —Putumayo Music 2003 [JOE GATTO]

This is the highly anticipated debut solo CD from the former Tricky muse featured on such classic albums as Maxinquaye and Angels With Dirty Faces. Here, she is reunited with Tricky and collaborates with Queens of the Stone Age, making for another eclectic chillout mix of musical styles, combining soul, blues, rock and trip-hop. From the old, scratchy blues of “Intro” introducing her quest for experimenting, to the catchy pop-rock, breakbeats of “Need One,” Martina creates a sensual, atmospheric and moody work her fans will expect, but may surprise the more rigid electronica elitists. Back to sultry simplicity on “Anything” and “Lullaby”—she breaks your heart with her distinctive and vulnerable, soulfulness, and forlorn lyrics. The menacing, rockin’ rumble of “Too Tough to Die” gives Martina a chance to growl and assert her power on top of electric guitars and deep bass lines. Beautiful and enigmatic, with a dark and dreamy voice like no other, she totally lives up to her album’s title. —Independiente 2003 [SAM CAMPOS]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “THE NEPTUNES PRESENT: THE CLONES” I haven’t heard much news about the Olinda Cat lately. People have their guesses as to what kind of cat it is. I’ve heard people saying it’s a puma. It’s a leopard. It’s a mountain lion. Did anyone ever once consider the Olinda Cat being a Thundercat? Remember, the Planet of Thundera exploded sometime in the late ‘80s and I haven’t seen a Thundercat since I was in 7th grade. I hope it’s Cheetarah. She was so hot! I hope her food supply dwindles and she makes her way to the west side where I live. I would take her to Sansei on a late Thursday night for some sushi. Afterward, we’d go for a nightcap in my hot tub, but this would be my downfall because cats hate water. She would probably slash me to death as a result. I’m so stupid sometimes. —Arista Records [$AYFOO] MTW

KOZMICBREEZE
ARIES: It’s the last week of Mars in Aries. Your dynamic influence will move into a more materialistic influence. It’s a good time to buy work tools. Personal issues are best dealt with now. Feed your body while putting your ego on a diet. TAURUS: Thursday and Friday will have you at the right place at the right time. You’ll be called upon to show your talents and skills. You’ll be introduced to interesting radicals and political eccentrics. Moneymaking opportunities come up over the weekend. GEMINI: If you’re on vacation you made the right move. If you’re learning hula or Hawaiian you’re also doing well. The weekend features a Gemini moon. Plan on being lucky. You need to discover the exotic in order to discover yourself. CANCER: Obeying your own rules will be a challenge this week. There’s a lot of give and take, as well as letting go. The problem with politics is that “business as usual” poses as common sense. I feel a change coming. You might be a part of that change. LEO: Relationships carry a lot of weight these days. To be truly fair you may have to check with spiritual sources that are new to you. The weekend looks like a big party. Don’t overdo it! Your body deserves better than just a liver workout. VIRGO: Feel free to be yourself. Your services are needed now more than ever. Continue to celebrate a righteous lifestyle of good health and community service. Make sure you have your business cards available and your website functioning. LIBRA: The weather is fine for making art. A creative revival is about to sweep over your soul. Make the things that give you joy. There needs to be more games and less fights. Your ability to make a good impression is enhanced. SCORPIO: One of your best qualities is that you enjoy your own company. Educate yourself on issues of law and foreign cultures. Moneymaking strategies should include service to others as well as reflecting your own values. SAGITTARIUS: Pretend that you’ve never visited your neighborhood before. What are the typical things that you see? What is unique about where you live? Who would you want to be friends with? This week write a poem or a story about your environment. CAPRICORN: Your keen intellect and clear communication will be to your advantage. Even amidst conflict you’re closer to coming to a resolution than you think. Artists and activists are likely to be in your area. Be friends with unusual people. AQUARIUS: You’re at the top of your game. Popularity combines with love, lust and good times. Getting even isn’t the same as making justice. Drop the grudge! Achieve your highest good by sharing your inventions and ideas. A closed mind may open up temporarily. PISCES: Your new and improved revolutionary spirit looks good on you. Be confident in your ideas. Any negotiations are bound to work in your favor. Acknowledge the ways in which we all are limited and dependent on other people for help. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Lloyd Cole 1/31/61, Big Boi 2/1/75, Les Dawson 2/2/34, Alice Cooper 2/4/49 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
Before and After the Waxing Last Friday, there was a going away party at Launiupoko Beach Park for our Caribbeanbound pal, Ken. There were kegs of beer, hot dogs and hamburgers—oh, and hitting the piñata from the trampoline. Nothing like seeing grown men, drunk, jumping on a 12-foot trampoline with a big stick trying to smash a crepe donkey to bits so they can get a couple pieces of candy. One of my dearest friends, Jay, showed up as a surprise guest from Las Vegas. Because he neglected to tell me that he was coming and the fact that I have a ridiculously busy schedule, sadly, our sure-to-be rounds of debauched late night activities were to be put on hold until Spring Break. Amy and I had lunch at Café O’Lei, where she gave me pink fishnets and a vintage slip from her recent trip to San Francisco. Then her boyfriend Randall joined us as we were polishing up the remaining bits of Kona Crème Brulee and the totally unnecessary bowl of ice cream accompanying it. Of course, we ate it anyway—that’s what we do. Jen went to see Tony Bennett at the MACC. She said it was so good she even cried during her favorite crooner ballad, “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” She loved the music and Tony but said she probably prefers listening to the CD because of a certain phenomenon known as The Clapping. It commonly occurs during many “living legend” performances because of the audience’s over-enthusiastic need to pay reverence for the onstage entertainer. In addition to the obvious cues to clap, like welcoming Bennett onstage or the ending of each song, intermittent clapping ensued at several other points. A guitar created a random off-note and people started clapping. Tony began to say something—anything—like, “So last night…” and people started clapping. “After the third song, I refused to clap anymore,” Jen said. “My hands hurt!” Later, Jen and I went out to see our friend’s band, Versatile, play at the Breakwater. We arrived rather late due to the doddling factor—girlspeak for not having any goddamn thing to wear—but convinced our buddy Kendall to sing her debut in the second set. Not only did she rock “Sympathy With the Devil,” but she also kicked ass on trumpet and keyboards. So much talent, that girl! Sometime during the night, I also discovered the joy of cell phone Text Messaging, as well as the subsequent addiction and withdrawal phases. The girls lost me as I sat hunched over in the dark nightclub, ridiculously maneuvering my way around capital letters and correct punctuation. “Yeah, give her a week and she’ll forget about all that shit,” said Jen. “She’ll be misspelling with the rest of us.” I knew I was in trouble on Saturday when I received a call from my long-lost buddy Jay at about 10 that morning. “We’re at Whale’s Tale having breakfast,” said Jay. “And yeah, I’m already drunk!” Oh, to be on vacation from Vegas. So I met Jay and his people—Jill, Gail, Mike and countless others—to have more after breakfast drinks at Hecocks. Then I had to leave them to head to Kahului for a particular procedure that required me to take a painkiller—the Bikini Wax. I consulted the Sugar Shack pharmacy prior to my departure. After the waxing, I met Lezlie at the Mañana Garage to chat and sip on a delicious Mañanatini, which is ginger beer with puréed mango. Afterwards, we went to SandBar in Paia to see Crazy Fingers. My gal Reeny was tending bar and decided to serve us cocktails that matched our baby blue and hot pink shirts. We didn’t ask how she achieved those particular colors. Sometimes, it’s better not to know. Our ultimate destination and goal that night was to see Khrinj and Entity play at Casanova in Makawao. Actually, my ONLY goal that night was to see these bands play, but due to my aforementioned excesses, I suddenly became the Kissing Bandit. Apparently, I was the highly entertaining drunk girl who ran around the club marking all my friends with the reddest of lips, stopping only to reapply lipstick in the ladies’ room. Yeah, that’s really cute… you’re laughing WITH me, right guys? Fortunately, my lady-in-waiting Lezlie arranged a ride back for piercing princess Debra with the rest of our Westside crew—Michelle, Jaxon and Vinnie—so that I could finish embarrassing myself within the safe confines of my small circle of friends.
