No Sword to Bury: Japanese Americans in Hawaii during World War II by Franklin Odo, 2004, Temple University Press, Philadelphia, PA. www.temple.edu/tempress. $39.50. Did you know “Bookshelf Reviews” is America’s fastest growing new column? Neither did we! But Temple University Press does, and they rock. They understand the dignity and elegance that a good book can add to your bookshelf. They know that a well-designed book can play

just as big a role in decorating your front hall or den as any oil painting or bronze sculpture. In fact, Temple knows this so well they only sent me the dust jacket of their latest war tome, No Sword to Bury, for review purposes. Now I don’t think I’m overstating things when I say that World War II was a bad thing. A lot of buildings got bombed, a lot of people got killed and new car production in this country stopped for nearly four straight years. Despite all that hardship, this is an elegant book. There are two old black and white photos on the cover, one tinted pink and the other pale blue. The pink one is of buildings burning, presumably at Pearl Harbor, while a torn U.S. flag flies high. The blue one shows row after row of Japanese Americans, all sitting quietly, even pensively. It’s an excellent mix of action and reflection—sure to appeal to just about anyone glancing over your bookshelf. No Sword to Bury is a masterful contribution based on years of painstaking research. In fact, there is nothing quite like it written about the Japanese American experience. You know how I know that? Because it says so on the back of the book: “No Sword to Bury is a masterful contribution based on years of painstaking research,” wrote UC Riverside Professor of Ethnic Studies Lane Ryo Hirabayashi. “In fact, there is nothing quite like it written about the Japanese American experience.” That’s a good thing. Not only does the book look good from afar, but there are nice things to read on the back. In fact, the back cover is a treasure trove of good information for the casual reader. U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye loved it, writing “Franklin Odo has captured with much warmth and poignancy the emotions of men who, though abandoned by their country, loved this country and proved it by repeatedly standing in harm’s way to defend it.” With all that’s happening in the world today, if someone you know reads that and doesn’t start crying like a little lost girl who dropped her lollipop in the sewer, you need to kick him the hell out of your home. ehbrah@mauitime.com Listen up, Hollywood! You have been rude, disrespectful and a nuisance on Maui since the day you arrived. You’ve trampled our beaches by raking up coral and assembling huge floodlights that shine into the ocean at night. You’ve overcrowded our surfbreak and parking lot, then told US that we should park elsewhere! You’ve taken advantage of locals who have worked hard for your silly, un-reality TV show by making them work 18 hour days after they were told they would work only 10 to 12 hours a day. You are so wasteful it makes me ill! Where do you think all your dumpsters of barely eaten food and drink, cardboard and cigarette butts disappear to when they’re hauled away? Into our landfills, not yours. You have no respect for our land or people. Take your low flying helicopters, obnoxious lights, attitude and ridiculous cast members and get the hell off our island. “Don’t Give up the Fight” All Bob Marley wanted was freedom and peace for all people on the planet. On Feb. 6, the world will celebrate the 59th birthday of this man, the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley. A great deal of the focus will be on his cannabis consumption. While Bob would appreciate lighting a spliff with our global civil society, he would also appreciate putting his lyrics of liberation into action on a higher plateau. When listening to Marley’s music, every listener feels the connection that each person on the planet is exceptional and has a responsibility to be the living example of a peacemaker. Each song is a testimony for freedom. When we hear his songs we need to listen actively and aspire to put his words into daily action that revolutionizes the way we live. Marley’s music challenges authority and inspires people to reject injustice. In one of his most popular songs, he calls for people to stop being complacent and take action motivated by love of equality and emancipation of the human spirit. His indomitable will is reflecting in his mantra of “Get Up! Stand Up! Stand up for your rights. Don’t give up the fight.” In the same song he notes that there is more for us to learn than the philosophies and practices of prejudice—especially from the voice of the oppressed half. “It’s not all that glitters is gold,” he sang. “Half of the story had never been told.” The song is a call to peaceful action, not arms. “Me only have one ambition, y’know,” he said. “I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see humankind live together—black, white, Chinese, everyone—that’s all.” His music is the soundtrack for the modern human rights movement embracing universal love and respect while also performing daily direct action against uni-

versal suffering. His music demands us to work tirelessly for peace and freedom. His vision of an allnighter isn’t only partying but making peace until the dream is achieved. Bob played peace concerts with purpose not based on partying but peace education for the youth. It is only in this way that people can positively change their world though nonviolent means beginning with peace education. “This peace work, it don’t stop,” he said at one concert. “It never stop… We know it never stop. That mean, we the youth got a work to do… You can’t blame the youths of today. You can’t fool the youths. You teach the youths about Christopher Columbus and you say he was a very great man… You can’t blame the youths when they don’t learn.” Bob Marley’s lyrics inspire people around the world to rise up with the rhythms of the revolutionary prophet—using not their boot straps but their brains. In “Redemption Song,” he points out that responsibility rests with us. We might not have been the source of the problem, but we must put out positive vibrations for nonviolence. His message still makes our soul sing. “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.” Another important lyric calls for each and every one of us to continue on the path of peace until his music is the philosophy, accepted everywhere from classrooms to the global civil society. We must be the background singers as he asked for when he sang, “All I ever had is songs of freedom/Won’t you help to sing these songs of freedom.” Bob Marley’s songs are as necessary in an era of globalization as they were during imperialist government-dominated decades. “Brothers, the struggle must go on,” sang Bob’s son Ziggy, who’s continuing where his father left off. “No chain on your feet now… Are we free like we want to be now?… Baby, are we free like we want to be. Are you free? Are you free?” MTW

MONDAY, JAN. 26

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 28

Your Maui News gets all religious today with its top story “Christ the King to downsize.” To what, the Jack of Clubs? Now I’m not what you’d call a “religious” man who goes to “church” and drops “money” in the collection plate, but this looks real bad. And unprecedented. I’m not good with the calendar, but hasn’t Christ been king for like 2,000 years? This sounds like it could cause some problems. I mean, there are a lot of Christians in this country, right? Aren’t they going to be pissed that, well, the Son of God is falling a few rungs down the corporate ladder? Well, let me just read the story and… oh. They’re not talking about Christ the King as the Son of God… per se… but Christ the King School in Kahului. Seems budget cuts are forcing the diocese to eliminate its seventh grade. Get rid of the seventh grade?! Those kids scored! God damn, I hated the seventh grade. So awkward, so authoritarian, so incredibly boring. The seventh grade sucked ass. Did I mention that the seventh grade was not all that enjoyable? Now eighth grade, that was… no, that sucked, too.

At a time when an as-yet unnamed Maui Police Officer shot and killed a stolen car suspect under what numerous witnesses have called questionable circumstances, the battle over the future of Makena Beach is intensifying in the county council chambers and the Hawaiian sovereignty movement is gathering strength—to say nothing of the near-daily combat deaths in Iraq and the U.S. presidential campaign—is the best use of three-quarters of today’s Maui News front page really a full-color rundown on a doughnut taste test headlined “Krispy Kreme comes to Maui?”… State Schools Supe Patricia Hamamoto gave a speech before the legislature on how our school system is much like the librarian portrayed by Burgess Meredith on that one Twilight Zone episode—“obsolete.” But in a slap at the GOP, she added that local school boards aren’t the solution, but rather just more “bureaucracy.” Sounds like a pretty interesting speech, but her honor Governor Lingle wasn’t there to hear it. According to the Maui News, Lingle said she’d never received a formal invitation. Now that’s really low—not inviting the governor to your big education speech. I mean, really. She’s the governor! It’s not like Lingle can just waltz on into the legislature any old time she feels like it… At least one representative, Republican Chris Halford, did receive an invite but tossed it, saying the speech was just “partisan” and that he wouldn’t “waste time attending this exhibition.” That’s telling her—of course, isn’t boycotting a speech you deem partisan and act of partisanship? I’m just asking…

TUESDAY, JAN. 27 Last night Hawaii State Governor Linda Lingle gave her second annual State of the State address. To no one’s surprise, Lingle stated that the state of the state is good. She also stated that legislators need to be “statesmen” and not “politicians.” She wants to eliminate the state Board of Education, create statewide education standards and lower the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs business registration fees. Later, Lingle stated that she wanted the state to set aside $20 million in state money to enhance the state policy of battling the invasive species that keep invading the state.

THURSDAY, JAN. 29 In the greatest surprise upset of my career in journalism, Maui Police Chief Tom Phillips announced that a preliminary investigation of last Friday’s shooting death of a 27-year-old suspected car thief showed no officer committed any “wrongdoing.” Far trippier was the account in the News of the last time a Maui Police Officer killed a guy in the line of duty. It was April 13,

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

it certainly looks like America. And you can take that anyway you please.

FRIDAY, JAN. 30 Matson Navigation—the big shipping firm that hauls mainlanders’ cars over from the, um, mainland—is building a new milliondollar “mooring structure” at Pier 1 in Kahului Harbor. This is really something. Just the other day I was driving past the harbor and wondered out loud to no one in particular “Hey, you know what that harbor could use? A new mooring structure.” Glad someone is paying attention. Hell, with the kind of money Matson is throwing down, they could extend Pier 1 all the way to that Pier One in the Maui Marketplace.

SATURDAY, JAN. 31

1958. Ike was still in the White House, the Dodgers had just fled Brooklyn’s Ebbett’s Field for the safety of the L.A. Coliseum and Elvis had not yet bloated into the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich-eating embarrassment for which we all remember him today. As two officers drove an injured man from Hana Medical Center to Central Maui, the man suddenly began struggling with the driver, Officer William F. Roback. The man succeeded in grabbing Roback’s gun, which he then turned on the officer and his partner, Lt. Lesile Medeiros. Roback was killed and Medeiros shot in the face, but Medeiros managed to pull his own weapon and fire six—that’s right, six!—shots into the bynow obviously deranged guy, killing him… In a letter to the News, Kimo Kealoha of Kahikinui writes that people coming out of Kahului Airport can’t tell they’re in Hawaii, what with Krispy Kreme, Kmart, Costco, Starbucks, McDonalds and a Lexus dealership in their way. Nope, it doesn’t look like Hawaii at all, but

U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, this place), tells a bunch of his constituents that his “confidence is shaken” by the Bush Adminstration’s sudden claim that pre-Iraqi war intelligence was “faulty.” Really? You actually thought Bush and his regime was telling the truth last year when they implied that Iraq could attack the U.S. in just 45 minutes with biological weapons? What’s more, he said that our “credibility… is at stake as we move on to other crises in the world.” Other crises. Is it absolutely necessary that we continue to travel the world looking for dragons to slay? How about a few crises around these parts—the loss of so many thousands of jobs over the last three years or the exploding U.S. trade and budget deficits? Don’t they qualify as crises? Remember the old days—I’m talking Harry Truman here—when Democrats didn’t hesitate before pounding on Republicans who saw their mandate as making the rich richer? Whatever happened to them?… The Na Hale O Wainee homeless resource center finally opens in West Maui. And only 12 years after local officials called for its construction! The center’s 42 beds sounds great, except when you hear that a similar Central Maui facility can help around 750 people a day. Stupid Central Maui, always getting the best homeless stuff.

SUNDAY, FEB. 1 Does America seeing Janet Jackson’s breast during the Superbowl Halftime Show mean there’s six more weeks of winter? MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD HAPPY NEW YEAR Once again, authorities in the Hillbrow district of Johannesburg, South Africa, were unable to stop the traditional midnight celebrations, in which residents of high-rises toss refrigerators, ovens, beds, trash cans and other furniture off their balconies, and police, wearing crash helmets, try to dodge the fusillade. And People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals pressured officials of Brasstown, N.C., out of the traditional New Year’s Eve “possum drop” (lowering a caged opossum at the stroke of midnight, a la Times Square), causing the town to substitute a piece of roadkill. And Mr. Henry Earl was arrested in Lexington, Ky., on New Year’s Eve for being drunk and disorderly; his 11th such arrest that month and number 804 since 1992.

DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN

CULTURAL DIVERSITY Over a two-month period in the American Indian Miskito community of northern Nicaragua, about 150 people

contracted a hysteria whose symptoms included wandering naked in public, becoming severely violent, fighting imaginary enemies, and, later, lapsing into comalike states. Nicaraguan officials regard the illness, “grisi siknis,” as culture-bound, with traditional healers more effective at treating it than medical doctors (in contrast to affluent societies’ culture-bound illnesses, such as anorexia nervosa, which are often treated medically).

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Televangelist Joyce Meyer has risen from the pack of TV ministers (and from the ordinariness of her pre-preaching life) by her uninhibited pursuit of donations ($95 million in 2003), according to a December St. Louis PostDispatch profile. “Make your checks payable to Joyce Meyer Ministries,” she shouted, “and ‘million’ is spelled m-i-l-l-i-o-n.” Of once receiving $1 million in stocks from a worshipper, she said, “I didn’t have that (gift) for five minutes and I said, ‘OK, God, next I’ll take $5 million.” “Fear,” she reminds her parishioners, as in their fear of making sacrifices in order to have more money to give her, “is the work of the devil.”

FUTON LIFESTYLES

In January during Florida’s first election using all touch-screen balloting (following the state’s 2000 presidential fiasco), Ellyn Bogdanoff won a special election for a state House seat from Broward County by 12 votes out of about 10,000 cast, but the losing candidate was considering a challenge over the 134 “voters” who had gone into the booths but for whom no votes were registered. In related news, in January in San Antonio, Texas, Chad Allen Tolleson was arrested for burglarizing a store by climbing in through a ventilation duct; however, he got stuck, and early-arriving employees who found him dangling from the ceiling now refer to him as “Hanging Chad.”

LOCALNEWS

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Not So Tough Crowd Linda Lingle works the Maui Chamber of Commerce “The numbers say that about 85 percent of the island are perfectly happy with the way things are,” said the local government official to the nodding reporter. “That leaves about 15 percent who care about issues. It used to be traffic, now it’s housing. It makes sense.” The above exchange, which took place a week ago in the Four Seasons Resort in Wailea, is exemplary of the pro-status quo mindset of the crowd that awaited Governor Linda Lingle. It was a Maui Chamber of Commerce luncheon, and a few hundred members were milling about, waiting for Lingle to show and share some of tax credits and spending programs that would make up this year’s legislative agenda. It was also just three days after she gave her State of the State address—during which she warned the legislature that, “politicians all too often think about the next election,” whereas “statesmen think about the next generation.” It was doubtful if glad-handing the Chamber actually constituted “statesmanship,” but no one at the Four Seasons seemed to care. For Lingle, shaking hands at the Chamber of Commerce is about as taxing and risky as President George W. Bush visiting Fort Hood in Texas. Basically, she would have gotten cheers from the probusiness, pro-Republican crowd if she read from the phone book. “It’s an exciting time to be alive from my point of view,” the periwinkle suit and white lei-clad governor said during the Jan. 29 luncheon just as everyone was digging into a dessert consisting of a perfectly shaped tetrahedron of mango ice cream—which also encased a sphere of coconut ice cream—served on a bed of diced pineapple and supporting a crispy disk of baked shredded coconut. “I look forward to working with you.” As if she hasn’t already been “working with” the Chamber throughout her administration, now entering its second year. The Maui Chamber has been good to Lingle—a former five-term Maui councilmember and two-term mayor—since long before she moved to Honolulu. Even a cursory, by-nomeans exhaustive look at contributions to Lingle’s failed 1998 and successful 2002 campaigns shows Chamber members gave her over $130,000. The Hyatt Regency Maui stepped in with at least $5,500. The lobbyists at the Maui Hotel Association gave her at least $2,000. Mega-land owner and developer Maui Land & Pineapple came through with at least $5,000. Big-time county

Lingle gets leid contractor Goodfellow Brothers wrote checks totaling at least $5,000. Ever watch the Visitor’s Channel, aka The Paradise Television Network? Owners and hosts Jim and Nancy Kartes gave Lingle at least $7,000. Maui Weekly owners Joseph Sugarman and Everett Dowling—who moonlights as a super-developer—each gave at least $1,000. Even relatively unknown Chamber members stuffed huge wads of cash into Lingle’s campaign coffers. Equity One Real Estate donated at least $7,500 and the mechanical contractor Dorvin D. Leis Co. gave at least $12,000. Lingle may talk of statesmen, but she was all politician in Wailea. She knew her crowd, talking tax credits, lowered business fees and lots of state-certified pork. Of course, the latter she called “initiatives,” since it’s impolite to speak of “spending programs” in such pro-business company, but they got the message. Chamber members applauded her over a dozen times. She also got three standing ovations, including one when she said she’d release over $600,000 in air ambulance funds to the county. And she got a lot of applause when she answered a question about the possible lengthening of the Kahului Airport runway. “You don’t create inferior infrastructure to control growth,” she said. “We want that runway to be safe. “I need you to leave the room as advocates,” she told the nodding chamber members. “This will take your complete involvement. Please, when you leave today go out and advocate these plans.” It’s a wonder she even had to ask. MTW

One of Bush’s “weapons of mass destruction”

Judging by the studied silence of the audience, the filmmakers—who based their movie on interviews with over two dozen former intelligence and national security officials— were preaching to the converted. That’s a shame, considering how terribly important the film is during this election year. The movie makes crystal clear the fact that Iraq has not fielded operational chemical or biological weapons for at least five years. Iraq has never constructed or otherwise obtained a nuclear bomb. The movie also makes clear that Saddam Hussein’s regime and Al Qaida—far from allies—were actually enemies. Much of the movie consists of clips of Bush and his officials beating the drum for war, like the time Vice President Dick Cheney went on national television and said Iraq had nuclear bombs. When the army located a couple Iraq hydrogen gas generator trucks used to launch weather balloons, the Bush Administration spent months trying to convince the world they were mobile bio-weapons labs. That Bush later used these trucks to say we had “found the weapons,” has never earned him the scorn he deserves. Now we have a broken down, chaotic Iraq—a failed state if there ever was one. Perhaps the greatest irony of Bush’s invasion is that the whole justification for the war—stopping a mythical Iraqi/terrorist connection—has led to exactly that. Al Qaida wasn’t in Iraq a year ago, but they certainly are now. Today, Al Qaida and other sympathetic groups are flooding the country, killing Americans and Iraqis on a nearly daily basis. The film ends before those events, with a voice-over of Bush deriding “nation-building”—exactly what we’re doing in both Afghanistan and Iraq—during the 2000 presidential election. For the most part, everyone in the Democratic “headquarters” was satisfied by this, though few hung around when the movie operator put the Afghan movie back on. Apparently, one war is quite enough for an evening. MTW

There are about a dozen people in the darkened room, watching the movie and sitting on the white plastic chairs you keep on your patio. Some are chewing on popcorn in small paper cups. They’re here to see a new film exposing the evils of America’s invasion and occupation of Iraq. But there’s something not quite right about the images they’re seeing on the screen. Sure, the men patrolling a craggy, treeless landscape are soldiers, but who are they? They speak English fluently, but only a few carry the latest American M-4 carbines—the others have Russian AK-47s slung over their shoulders. Instead of helmets, they’re wearing baseball caps. Not exactly clean-shaven, buzz-cut Captain Americas, these guys have sleepy eyes, heavy beards and long hair. If they are American troops, they’ve gone native. “This is a film from Afghanistan,” says the movie operator guy about 15 minutes after the scheduled start time. “We haven’t gotten to the other one yet.” Oh. Right army, wrong war. All this time they’ve been watching U.S. Special Forces guys knocking heads in Afghanistan, when in fact everyone came here to see U.S. Special Forces guys knock heads in Iraq. Actually, it’s a minor miracle anyone made it “here” at all. Billed as the “Maui County Democratic Party Headquarters,” the room is just a band practice room behind a tattoo shop in a very old green building on Main in Wailuku. Indeed, there’s still a drum set in one corner and a mess of speakers and amps in another. Specifically, they came here, on Jan. 29, to see Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War. Produced by Move On and some other leftist organizations, Uncovered presented a methodical breakdown of the Bush Administration’s distortions, exaggerations and outright lies that led to the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Walking out of the Castle Theater at the MACC last Thursday, I couldn’t stop singing “We Go Together.” It’s the last song of the musical Grease, which I had just seen. Rizzo was really great because the girl who played her completely captured the whole I’m-a-tough-chick-but-a-totalsoftie-inside attitude. Her solos were beautiful. It was the same with Marty. As for the guys, it was remarkable how often they hit their falsetto notes. This is Grease, and it’s the ‘50s thing to do. Danny did it a lot, as did some of the greasers. Productions of Grease come and go, but this one was different. Put on by high school students, this production began months before in a large room called “The Shop.” It stands at the end of the parking lot, in the last building of Baldwin High School in Wailuku, past the fake brick wall on wheels, the set of green lockers, the house front painted dark green with a yellow porch and piles of wood, canvas and dollies. Walk through a fairly nondescript door and you find a room filled with stacks of plastic chairs, storage containers, various period piece costumes and playbills, an entire wall of books with titles like Broadway’s Greatest Musicals, Acting Is Believing, and Shakespeare’s Masterpieces, as well as a piano and two desks. Backpacks and books are strewn about on the floor and a few chairs are set up in front of the door facing the back wall. A large chalkboard peaks out beyond a mountain of speakers on one side of the room. On the opposite

side, framed photos and posters from past productions like Annie and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat create a crooked canopy of achievements under an old school clock that ticks silently away towards 3 p.m.—just a half-hour into rehearsal time. In the middle of the room is a small clearing of about 20 square feet, where a group of at least 50 teenagers are stomping, clapping, singing and dancing enthusiastically—and loudly, with occasional squeals—to a number that evokes the late 1950s and is a key part of one of

Baldwin High School’s Greatest Musical do,” says Miss Loudon, “is the girls with the high-pitched voices need to tone it down. It sounds like Freddy Krueger!” The kids quietly boo and moan, then shift positions and start the scene again. Grease is based on an offBroadway play written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey that ran from 1972 to 1996. While most people today are familiar with the 1978 movie, which starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, Grease—The Musical features slight differences but still includes such hits as “Summer Nights,” “Greased

a satirical look at the dress, manners, morals and music of teenagers at the beginning of the rock and roll era in the ‘50s. The plot revolves primarily around the attraction between popular “greaser” Danny Zuko and the virtuous, new-girl-onthe-block Sandy Dumbrowski. Surrounding the central plot of Sandy and Danny exists a comical circus of characters from the tough but tender girl gang, the Pink Ladies, to the hyper cheerleader Patty Simcox, and from the lovably dopey bad boys, the Greasers, to the “geeky” class valedictorian, Eugene.

Deep into daily rehearsals since midNovember, the company of Grease consists of a cast of over 60 Baldwin High School students, from freshmen to seniors and including lots of juniors. The Baldwin Performing Arts Center puts on about five shows each year at the high school, including their annual end of the year performance. The Baldwin Thespian Art Troupe #3135 are also currently raising funds to attend the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska, as well as a visit to New York City, in order to explore prospective options within the world of performance arts. Back at The Shop, the particular scene the Baldwin High School cast is working on captures the ‘50s-born excitement of a live telecasted American Bandstand. The choreography requires at least a dozen dance partners who spin, dip, jump and “Hand Jive” in sync on a simulated dance floor with a peripheral audience that claps along. With lead players Sandy Dumbrowski, played by BHS Junior Alana Yurkanin, and Danny Zuko, played by Senior Darren Byler, gone from today’s rehearsal, the remaining cast members adapt flawlessly. Junior Marikah Cunningham, who plays Danny’s blind date Cha-Cha DiGregorio, compensates for his absence by dancing with an invisible partner, dip-

ping and spinning herself into a believable frenzy. Rizzo, played by Senior Hoku Pavao, and Marty, played by Sophomore Tierra Foster, hipsway and gum-chew their parts so well, it’s clear who their Pink Lady characters are even before they launch into their respective role-defining solos. The scene continues unabated with occasional interruption

next scene, which involves Pink Lady Frenchy, played by BHS Junior Ginger Lowcher, and about 20 “angels” as they act out the recorded music to “Beauty School Dropout,” sans a special guest artist that has yet to arrive. The rest of the cast sits down to watch. “Girls, try to look angelic!” she says. “Not like you just got out of sixth period!”

interesting—different positions!” For the last half of the rehearsal, Loudon is sitting at a desk that is slightly above the room. After the third redo with both the recorded music and Ray singing, she smiles and the kids laugh. The scene is successful. But that doesn’t stop her from asking for them to do it again, from beginning to end—no interruptions. Ray ends his solo with an

“Girls, try to look angelic!” she says. “Not like you just got out of sixth period!” from Miss Loudon. “You need to hear the line’s last sound before you start screaming,” she says bluntly. “Did you just roll your r’s? “Don’t do that. “Let’s start the scene again.” There are kids everywhere, standing and talking and coming and going in the already cramped Shop. Actors are on the stage, rehearsing a scene. Sound guys and set designers are asking Loudon questions. An assistant pulls her aside to discuss some production related matter. It is pure chaos. Yet Loudon retains control. Just as the chaos seems overwhelming, she yells out a direction to the stage, as though nothing else is going on in the room. Later, the cast listens to Miss Loudon’s brief direction for the

The song ends as Tony Ray, lead singer of the T. Ray Band, walks in. He will be guest starring in the role that Frankie Avalon made memorable as “Teen Angel” in the 1978 movie based on Grease—The Musical. “I thought you guys replaced me,” he says, smiling to the students and briefly conversing with Miss Loudon. “Do you think you guys can follow me without the recording?” Ray asks the rest of the cast. They nod affirmatively. The scene continues with Ray singing and Loudon talking the cast through each movement of the choreography. “If you’re going to be in drama with me,” she says to her students, “you should know straight lines and the same body positions look disgusting. I want

impressive high-range, vocal flourish to which he concludes proudly, “That was my best Ethel Mermen!” After blank looks and silence from his high school costars, Ray laughs. “Oh, I guess you wouldn’t know who that is.” Baldwin High School’s Performing Arts Learning Center presents closing performances of Grease—The Musical this weekend at Baldwin High School Auditorium in Wailuku; Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door only and are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for students. The Five Dollar Challenge Dueling plate lunches in Wailuku or without the tangy barbecue sauce. Since they were out of both potato and mac salad when I got there, I opted for potato wedges as my other side, and they were also quite good. But the crowning achievement was the rice. No sticky glob of congealed starch here, this rice was light and fluffy. About the only down side was the complete lack of dining facilities, it being a Minit Stop and all—I also found out that spreading your meal out by the magazine rack is generally frowned upon. So I had to eat down the street on a bench in Honoli’i Park. But the wild chickens who live there didn’t seem at all concerned as I wolfed down one of their cousins. So which is it? Fried rice or not-at-all sticky rice? Comfy booths or feral chickens? You figure it out. I’m full.

Prime Rib Nite

Life is about making choices. What do I do this weekend, work on the car or go surfing? Who do I ask out, the sweet girl next door or the promiscuous cheerleader down the block? And most importantly, what do I have for lunch? For anyone standing at the corner of Main and Central in Wailuku with a grumbling stomach and at least a fivespot in his or her wallet, that last dilemma is especially troubling. “Plate Lunch from $4.45” advertises the sign in the window on the left, belonging to Mike’s Restaurant. But next door at the Minit Stop Island Kitchen, there’s the sign “Plate Lunch from $4.99.” Ahh, the plate lunch: a giant mound of chicken, beef, ribs, pork, fish or some other meat item served with two scoops white rice and one scoop macaroni salad. But which one is best? To find out which is the superior meal, I tested them both. I began with Mike’s—mostly because I parked closer to it. Here, the motto is “Taste the Family Flavor,” which is a little ambiguous—Now with 40 percent more uncle!—but nonetheless charming. Seeking out the $4.45 lunch, I found it was, in fact, simply a one-item combo plate. I ordered the double-cooked pork, which came with my choice of fried rice or chow mein. And while it certainly qualified as “lunch on a plate”—the rice was delicious and the pork was loaded with lots of tender bits of pork fat—it didn’t meet the time-honored standards of the “plate

lunch,” sporting neither mac salad nor white rice. Now this isn’t to say Mike’s is a “bad” place. There are a dozen or so booths for you to relax and enjoy your lunch, a good self-serve soda machine and plenty of easy-to-use trash cans for the aftermeal cleanup. That left Island Kitchen, which is just a counter not far from the beef jerky and candy bar rack in the Minit Stop. Standing in line beneath a sign saying “Home of Maui Fried Chicken,” I ordered the $4.99 chicken katsu plate lunch, which comes with two scoops rice and one scoop salad. And what did I get for spending 54 cents more than my previous meal at Mike’s? Only one of the best damn plate lunches I’ve had. The chicken was tender and juicy and tasted great with

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY ELAINE GAST

Battle of the B-Boys Breakdancing is back They call themselves The Cafeteria, yet they spend a lot of time in their garage. More specifically, on a square piece of padded linoleum secured by 20-pound weights in their garage. There’s Drew, aka “Demune,” a baseball-cap-wearing boy-next-door who can rap a bad-ass beat. There’s Jonah, aka “The Mole,” a slightly bored but edgy guy who stews on the sofa scrawling dark lyrics. And there’s Terms (short for Terminology), a wiry-haired former Graf Rat who coins phrases and talks X-Box with the boys. Between the hungry minds of this motley bunch of 20-something production artists, emcees and DJs comes Represent, the plan for the biggest breakdance battle to hit Maui. Breakdancing? Breakdancing. It happens Feb. 7. In addition to the Bboy (break) battle, the free event will also feature stand-offs between freestyle Emcees (a form of rhyme and rap), Black Book artists (graffiti, known as “graf”) and Turntablists (called DJs or spinners). The event is a tribute to the elements of hip-hop and the competition that surrounds the scene. According to the Cafeteria boys, Represent is “all about who can burn the freshest piece, who can rock the sickest style and footwork, whose scratch is the illest and whose lyrics are tighter.” It works like this: Two teams from different B-boy “crews” step into the circle and break their urban best—leaping, flipping and spinning their bodies to beats from a boombox. Each team gets two turns, a routine and then a rebuttal. The best B-boy team wins $50 cash and a record store gift certificate.

DJs also come prepared with a routine, and are given three to five minutes to spin their stuff. Emcees perform in freeform style based on an improvisational concept chosen on the spot. While all this is going on, Black Book Artists sit to the side, sketching their artwork to be judged by night’s end. The featured B-boy battle will be between Oahu’s Hi-Def Crew and Maui’s Bad Habitz. “We’ve got the most B-boys we’ve ever had flying into Maui for the event, said Demune. “There’s gonna be a lot of good kids coming, a lot of different styles.” Demune said break has come far from the days of Rerun on What’s Happenin’. There’s Up Rocks, meaning foot moves. There’s Skittles, which are sweeps and kicks from the ground. Power Moves include shoulder rolls, head, back and hand spins. And then there’s Popping and Locking, which Terms described as a “souped-up version of The Robot,” including waving motions and the moonwalk. Finally, there’s the Freeze, which is, well, a freeze. With roots in African and Brazilian martial arts, Kung Fu and gymnastics, break became popular in the ‘70’s in the Bronx and L.A. It grew in popularity in the ‘80’s with movies like Beat Street and Breakin’. On Maui alone, there are currently about 30 breakers comprising various crews, among them The Villians, Bad Habitz and Abstract Footprints. Breaking may be a male-dominated sport, but Demune said there are some girls out there who’ve shown the “skillz.” “Being a breaker, you can either break with a crew or break by yourself,” he said. “I know two or three B-girls on the island who break as free agents. It’s a battle of skill, not physical force.” Still, the spirit of competition can get nasty, as break crews face off and emcees trash talk one other.

Demune (top), The Mole (bottom) “People will act like they hate each other because they spin, rhyme or break different,” he said. “It’s all about outdoing other people, proving that you are more creative. Everyone’s out there to win. It makes those many hours we spend practicing in our garages and basements all worthwhile. We feed off each other. We do it because we love hip-hop. It unifies the community in a positive way, and keeps us—and the culture—alive.”

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Joking ‘Bout A Revolution Chicago based comedy finds new values More ambitious than its predecessor, Barbershop 2 continues the franchise’s gentle line of social commentary sprinkled with liberal amounts of urban humor and harmless insults. Calvin’s (Ice Cube) Chicago barbershop is a mom and pop establishment threatened with extinction when a corporate haircutting salon chain moves in across the street from his business. Eddie (returning cast member Cedric the Entertainer) pours on the jokes as Calvin fights City Hall to protect his community from creeping gentrification. “The future ain’t what it used to be” is the guiding theme in this rollicking comedy that hints at a shift to ethical importance over a blind worship of profit.

Barbershop 2: Back in Business

★★★★★

The city of Chicago plays an important part in quietly solidifying the urban political terrain that Calvin and his outspoken neighbors occupy. A pivotal subplot of the movie comes from flashback sequences that explain Eddie’s history in the South Side neighborhood and his connection to working in the barbershop without having to pay a rental fee for his barber chair. When a young Eddie runs from the police after stealing some pieces of meat, he escapes into the barbershop circa 1968 to hide. Calvin’s father conceals Eddie from the cops and gives him a job that turns his future around. It’s revealed that a nighttime Chicago riot once threatened to destroy Calvin’s Barbershop, but Eddie defended the place and deterred a rioter from firebombing the place. Eddie’s backstory explains the nature of his archaic Frederick Douglass hairdo and adds weight to his outspoken politically incorrect ideals, especially

Cedric the Entertainer when we see his younger persona revealed as a black revolutionary more interested in making love than violence. All of Barbershop’s characters are people with strong identities rooted in their neighborhood. So when downtown money moves to bring cookie-cutter coffee bars, video stores and a haircut chain to the area, Calvin depends on the loyalty of his neighbors to stand up against the bribe paying developers. There’s virtuousness to the story and purity to the defiance on display that beckons to a time when there were such communities in America, and

the movie makes a plea for a return a more personalized and accountable society. Above its City of Hope construct, Barbershop 2: Back In Business is a funny movie with spiky jokes and comic riffs fulfilled by a talented and energetic ensemble. Queen Latifah takes center stage in a couple of scenes that add tremendously to the movie’s modern vibe. Eddie and Gina (Latifah) bait each other in an insult session at a client appreciation barbeque that is miraculous for the range of anger and humor the comedians display before resolving their brief conflict.

It’s a blessing that Barbershop wasn’t translated into a television show after its unexpected success in 2002. Screenwriter Don D. Scott co-wrote the first Barbershop and returns here with a singular writing effort that honors the tone and complexity of the characters with dialogue and jokes that bristle with happy surprise. Here is a brand of socially aware comedy that combines satire, laughs and a genuinely likable cast in a memorable context of sassy humor. It’s a comedy franchise that shows much promise for future big screen fun. PG-13 98 mins. MTW

We Love Fire Dancers! Friday, 10 p.m. at Casanova Last month they let fire dancers perform at Casanova for the first time and Lexi and Ishiah impressed everyone there. This is part of Six Degrees Night, DJ El Gato’s promotion of Six Degrees Records’ infectious global grooves—the dopest electronic beats mixed with the traditional sounds of Brazil, Africa, India and beyond. No soulless techno here, this is joyful, deep, dance music with the perfect mixture of the organic and the electronic to keep the dance floor packed all night long. Live congas by Tato empower the Afro-Latin numbers and Melody’s sensual tribal motions accompany the music perfectly. This is something definitely out of the ordinary that appeals to anyone looking for a unique night out and a place to let loose. [MARIO FIORINI]

OUTKAST “SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW” There may be a few of you who have not yet heard Outkast’s new release or have fought its power. This big, fast, hard driven, rump shakin’ sound from the “Dirty South” backs right up into the face of the mainstream and shakes its ass. Their albums Aquemini and Big Boi & Dre Present are worth a listen but their newest venture Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is mind-boggling. This double dose of love lets both Big Boi and Andre 3000 put out their own discs while flaunting one of the most distinct and solid sounds in hip-hop. If you could imagine Blackstar meets Earth Wind & Fire meets Bowie, you might be close. Each of the two discs is distinct and both will reshape your current perception of hip-hop. If you don’t like this, your kids will or their kids will because it will be around for a long, long time…MUHAHAHA (evil laugh). —La Face 2003 [SHANE LEE]

FELA KUTI “THE BEST BEST OF FELA KUTI” Fela Kuti is a god of African music, founder of the Afro-Beat sound, Nigerian freedom fighter and an equal of Bob Marley. He achieved his peak in the 1970s, as he released dozens of albums. Kuti’s sound is funky, percussive, jazzy, hard and unique. He moved to L.A. and masterfully mixed jazz and funk with African music to create what he named Afro-Beat music. A true rebel, Kuti put a fence around his house in Lagos and declared it a separate country—the Kalakuta Republic—and eventually the whole neighborhood did the same. Brutal fights with the government followed him the rest of his life. The song “Zombie” details his disdain for the Nigerian army with rhythmic precision. Many of his albums are now available as two records on one CD and contain some of the grooviest, deepest, freeform funk available anywhere in the world. — MCA Records 2000 [JOE GATTO]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “BREAKS SESSIONS” It seems that white British guys have great taste in American black music. The Stones filtered the Blues and British DJs always come up with great samples of obscure soul songs. This compilation from England is one of the best collections of ‘70s funk and soul tunes I have ever heard. Their premise is to put out the original versions of songs that hip-hop artists have sampled over the years. It is exciting to find some of these originals and try to guess where you have heard it in a hip-hop song. I especially like it because it has my favorite instrumental song ever—“Soulful Strut” by the Young Holt Unlimited—that I’ve searched years for! The opening rhythm on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Excursions” shows up here in its original form–“Tribute to Obabi” by The Last Poets. Breaks Sessions counts 30 soulful gems on two CDs. —Union Square Music 2002 [JOE GATTO]

AKROBATIK “BALANCE” There was this one time, where I peed the bed. I remember it being the worst experience. What made it so shitty was that I had only been dating this girl for a week and then next thing ya know, I’m dreaming about busting a piss, only to find out the soggy sheets that my dream was a sad reality. To make matters worse, I did it in HER bed. We ended up breaking up a few months later, but I don’t think it had as much to do with the bed-wetting episode as much as it had to do with me not calling. —Coup D’Etat 2003 [$AYFOO]

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui 4100 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 875-4100 Jazz entertainment from 6-9 nightly in the Lobby Bar. Wailea Marriott 3700 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 879-1922 Hawaiian entertainment w/ hula 6-9 nightly in Kumu Bar & Grill. Hawaiian entertainment 9-11 nightly in the Mele Mele Lounge featuring Pam Gamboa Peterson Mon and Sat, Mitch Kepa & Raymond "Mundo" Medeiros. Paradyse & Ka Poe O Hawaii perform at the Luau, Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri.

THE DISTILLERS “CORAL FANG” Rock out with your strap-on cock out! According to their most hardcore fans, this second album by The Distillers doesn’t have as much crazy anger and screaming as their first album; “the rage had matured into a deeper, smoldering disillusionment; a wiser and more jaundiced view of life.” All I know is lead singer Brody’s razor voice backed by a chainsaw buzz of guitars and drums is bittersweet angst-ridden music to my ears. —Warner Brothers 2003 [SAM CAMPOS]

Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort 3550 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 879-4900 Sunset Terrace; Live music by Lono, Thu; Brado Mamalias, Fri; Rama Camarillo, Sat-Sun; Bobby Krueger, Mon-Wed; all sets 6-9 p.m. Wailea Sunset Luau, Tue, Thu and Sat, 6-8:30 p.m. Maui Prince Hotel 5400 Makena Alanui, 874-1111 Molokini Lounge: Ron Kuala’au, Hawaiian and contemporary guitar and vocals, Sun, 6-10:30 p.m. and

KOZMICBREEZE

If not now, when?

ARIES: You should be feeling as free as the

breeze. The full moon on Thursday night has you ready to party with the best of them. Don’t judge your self-worth by what’s in your wallet. Know that your values don’t need to be shared by others to be happy. TAURUS: Now’s your chance to show the world what you can do. You’re in your power place. Make sure that this newfound dynamic drive doesn’t have you running over people. On the other hand, perhaps you’ve been overextending yourself and need some solo time. GEMINI: The full moon will inspire bold communication. Don’t play the blame game. Unconscious actions can lead to disaster. Enemies move secretly. You may need to lay low rather than confronting things head on. Help others while you’re exploring new possibilities. CANCER: No one truly owns anything. Everything is temporary. Believe it or not, everything is shared. Sometimes the only thing shared is greed. Other times it’s generosity. Those whom you are in a relationship with are going to have an extreme effect on your life. LEO: Keep in mind fairness. You need to find a balance between universal knowledge versus personal will. You’re being called to some sort of leadership. You’ll be enjoying love and art on a more exotic level. Thursday full moon is in Leo. Celebrate with a friend. VIRGO: Either you’re nursing yourself from some type of physical affliction or you’re nursing others. You feel an urgency to get things done. Your organizational abilities are improving. The full moon highlights dreams, intuition and subconscious attractions to others. LIBRA: The most desirable sign in the zodiac just got a little more desirable. Venus in your seventh house brings love and helps you make peace with even the worst of enemies. The full moon inspires spontaneous social gatherings. SCORPIO: The past determines the present as well as the future. It’s a good time to go for counseling. You’re likely to feel shy and vulnerable and you may spend more time at home than usual. The full moon has you in the public eye using your talents to the fullest. SAGITTARIUS: Don’t be a flake. Your reputation is at stake. Make promises only if you intend on delivering them. Keep your ego in check while dealing with friends and neighbors. Jobs dealing with health, higher education and travel are worth checking into. CAPRICORN: Bargain shopping is one of your favorite pastimes this season. Keep in mind what you really want rather than going for something that’s second-rate. Be patient yet realistic when confronting limitations in relationships. AQUARIUS: Financial changes are normal during this period. Pace yourself as you move forward with new projects. Don’t overdo it. Modesty is the best policy. The full moon will produce some intense exchanges with the women in your life. PISCES: It’s time to embrace a more mature outlook. Become more of a warrior and less of a victim and prisoner. It’s time to encourage and activate those around you. The full moon indicates you have your work cut out for you.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Exposing The Right Boob Of Maui’s Nightlife Funny things happen on Thursdays. Something about it being almost Friday, I think. So I get this funny fax from Spike, one of our music reviewers and a tattoo artist at Skin Deep in Lahaina, and I leave work to go talk to him about it. We have a few words, at which point I look around the shop. It is momentarily empty, save for the receptionist girl Caitlin and my piercer friend, Debra. “I’m bored,” she said. “You wanna get your nipples pierced?” Two 14 gauge rings later, I’m sitting at Karli’s bar at the Cool Cat Café and order a shot of Jack Daniels before I head back to work. On Friday, BJ and I rode our bikes down to Ruth’s Chris Steak House—she on her blue Cadillac of a cruiser, me on my borrowed custom-painted ride that was in serious need of some air in the back tire. We were supposed to have dinner with Lezlie, but by the time we got there the kitchen was closed and our pals Pam and Kelly were enjoying the last bits of it. So BJ and I dove right into the drinking. Whenever I’m hungry at a bar with no available food, I like to order dirty martinis. Yeah, it’s the olives, totally. So then BJ and I hopped in Lezlie’s car and headed up to Fish & Game in Kahana for a quick cosmopolitan, then to Nachos Grande in Honokowai for uh, contrast’s sake. As soon as we walked into Nachos, a very nice gentleman rustled up some chairs and shots of tequila for us. Lezlie dropped BJ and I off at the Breakwater so we could harass Satan a little with our tiny blue rubber penis that fit so neatly on the end of one of his straws. Doesn’t everybody flirt this way? Then he made these amazing citrus-rimmed cosmos for us that he lit on fire. Very, very impressive. He definitely walks the line between good and evil, that one. Then Sal was showing us some porn sites on his laptop, which inspired us to use BJ’s iZone to take pictures of ourselves in various poses with the little blue rubber penis, which was still on the end of that straw. Of course, we had to go hit the Sly Mongoose, where cutey-patooty Michelle was celebrating her birthday at midnight. We took lots more photos there involving a lot of tongue action—as in, people sticking them out for the camera and such. Hopefully, these photos won’t turn up on some website that Sal will have bookmarked on his laptop. On Saturday, I set out on my bike into town and rode by the tennis courts. I heard somebody yelling “Sarah! Sarah!” but didn’t really think anything of it because my name’s not Sarah. But later, when Lezlie and I went to the Hard Rock Cafe, I heard the emphatic call again. I turned around and was greeted by two cute young guys I sort of recognized. “Hey Sarah!” one said. I guess he sort of recognized me too. I wanted so badly to not correct him. Aliases are fun. It was Evan, whom I had met months earlier outside of the Hard Rock while I was taking notes. I thought he was making fun of me at the time but I have been known to teeter on paranoid occasionally. We all ended up dancing to the Crunch Pups eventually, after a few Tuaca Lemondrops. A couple nights later Katy and I discussed whether we would attend the Maui Film Festival movie at the MACC—The Gospel of John. “What’s it about?” she asked. “John? That gospel guy?” We did end up going and chatting up with Barry Rivers for a moment, who was glad to be back from his film festival tour. Then we did our usual run to the SandBar in Paia, where we met a guy named Bloodshot Billy. He told us about how he was at Charley’s one night and had an angry spat with a reality TV guy from the mainland. He said the hostile behavior sometimes happens when he has five or six beers. “How many beers have you had tonight?” I asked. “Five or six,” he said, smiling. MTW
