All right, you got me. I admit it. I like almanacs. I enjoy almanacs. Vive la Almanac. Ich bin ein Almanac Reader. And yes, I admit that I own an almanac or two. But, honest, I can explain. You see, I have a problem. All my life, I’ve loved to read almanacs. Even just thumbing through almanacs, squinting at the long statistical tables gives me hours of pleasure. I can’t help it, I swear! It’s a sickness! Like right now, there’s a copy of the

huge, delicious, 1,040-page Time Almanac 2004 just sitting on my desk, begging me to open it to some random page, which turns out to be page 621, and see what’s there… “In 2002 13.2 percent of wage and salary workers were union members, down from 13.4 percent in 2001. The union membership rate has steadily declined from a high of 20.1 percent in 1983.” Damn it! I swear, I didn’t mean to just tell Bin Laden that he can take advantage of the fact that organized labor has seen a steady decline in membership over the last two decades! I’ve been like this ever since I was a kid, pouring through the weather predictions in the Farmer’s Almanac. Yeah, I grew up in a big city, but stuff like frost warnings and tornadoes still fascinated me. I mean, it still does… “Should you live to tell the tale of being struck by lightning, you can join the Lightning Strike and Electric Shock Survivors International, Inc. (LSESSI), a non-profit support group for such survivors. With its motto, ‘Join us if it strikes you,’ and newsletter, Hit or Miss, the group emphasizes the necessity of a sense of humor in overcoming trauma.” Okay, okay, I’ll stop it. But haven’t you ever picked up an almanac, cradled it in your arms, felt its warm, papery goodness against your cheek? Doesn’t it fascinate you that the mayor of Austin, Texas only makes $60,000 a year while the city manager pulls in $188,115? Don’t you get chills inside when you read that in 1830 “President Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act, which authorizes the forced removal of Native Americans living in the eastern part of the country to lands west of the Mississippi River?” Or that there have only been 17 perfect games in the history of major league baseball? Or that Roger B. Taney was Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1836 to 1864? You see? I don’t mean to be a tool of the terrorists, it’s just that I have a sickness. I love almanacs. They give so much and ask so little. They comfort me when I’m lonely. Okay, you can slap the cuffs on now. I guess it’s Guantanamo for me, now. By the way, did you know Guantanamo is in Cuba, which has an annual estimated gross domestic product of $25.5 billion and an unemployment rate of 4.1 percent? MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to a certain newspaper that finds it entertaining to use a two by threeinch space as an open podium to spread hate. This column is just a venue for anonymous monkeys to fling their poo. Here is a constructive suggestion (you probably won’t take): use this space for an inspirational quote by an intellectual or spiritual leader. Or promote a worthy cause here on Maui where we might make a contribution. Use that little two by three inch space to better our world, not disgrace it.

Dean And Kucinich Square Off

Dennis With all the talk of U.S. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts being the latest shoe-in to get the Democratic Party’s nod to take on incumbent president George W. Bush, news of the other five candidates has dropped off dramatically. Since only Vermont Governor Howard Dean and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who represent the left and far left wings of the Democratic Party respectively, have visible grass roots organizations on Maui— Maui Democrats for Rev. Al Sharpton, anyone?—we thought it prudent last week to drop in on their latest meetings. “The man just has a good time and makes people feel good and look what he got!” said Ann Crowe, one of the 17 Maui Democrats for Dean who made it to the Coffee Store at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center on Jan. 4. “We’re just in a downtime until we can regroup financially.” Despite having the largest turnout ever for the group—the previous record was 16—the Dean people were downcast. After all, two months ago their boy was on the top of the heap—first in the polls, guest spot on K Street, cover of Rolling Stone and everything. But today… “Please keep the faith.” “It’s too bad the media had to turn his rah-rah theme into an anger theme.” “I think this will go right to the convention.” “There were lots of Republicans who voted in the [Iowa] caucus.” “In the next week [the media] will find out all kinds of reasons why Kerry can’t beat Bush.” “Dean is very experienced at being a long shot.” Ahh, the “long shot”—by far the most popular phrase heard exactly 24 hours later during the Maui Democrats for Kucinich gathering at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center Starbucks. “Has everyone seen Seabiscuit?” asked group chairwoman Ave Diaz, referring to

the story of the too-small, too-lame racehorse that still managed to win big races during the 1930s. “If we could win Hawaii it would be such a great statement.” It was around that time one of the dozen attendees began circulating a photocopy of Kucinich’s high school football lineup, which Kucinich is using in his campaign. At 4’9” and weighing just 97 pounds, he isn’t difficult to spot. If anything, the latest victories by Kerry have been a tonic for the Kucinich people, who see in them an opportunity to get disaffected Dean people to move to Kucinich and “vote their heart.” That back-to-wall spirit means the Kucinich people are willing to go to greater lengths than the Dean people to get the word out. While Dean people are satisfied hand-writing post cards for registered Democrats in Virginia and Wisconsin—which Kerry eventually won despite Dean’s saying those primaries were “do or die” races—the Kucinich people suggested pasting some of the candidate’s quotes on their daily emails, writing “Who is Kucinich?” in chalk on sidewalks and even henna-tattooing his name on their foreheads. Of course, when you look at issue positions, there’s no substantive difference between Dean and Kucinich. Both oppose the war in Iraq. Both want universal health care. Both want federal assistance to urban areas. Both want greater power for organized labor. To the far-right-wing Republicans who run the White House and Congress these days, the thought of either Dean or Kucinich actually getting more than a handful of votes in the presidential election makes what little blood flows through their veins shiver with bitter scorn. Thirty years ago, as was the fashion of the time, both men would have been smeared with the “Commie” label for their anti-war, anti-corporation attitudes and tossed aside. While that won’t happen today, they still have to worry about Democratic Party voters tossing Dean and Kucinich aside. Should that happen, members of both groups had identical back-up plans: “Anyone but Bush.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, FEB. 2 At last tiring of the unending criticism that homebuilders always defer the required affordable housing parts of their developments until, well, forever, the Maui County Council Housing and Human Services Committee has begun trying to put “teeth” into the current law. … Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa creates a 16-member panel to discuss the effects of cruise ships in Maui waters. The panel includes individuals from the usually probusiness/tourism Maui Chamber of Commerce, Maui Visitors Bureau, Maui Economic Development Board and Maui Hotel Association as well as those with more environmental concerns, like the Sierra Club and Maui Tomorrow. But if the panel is to succeed in any meaningful way, it’s going to have to ditch Arakawa’s mandate that it “maximize the industry’s benefits to our community as well as minimize or mitigate potential negative impacts.” In fact, there are no real benefits to the local environment or economy by allowing fleets of behemoth cruise ships to plow through Hawaiian waters. Protected by so-called “voluntary agreements” with state and local governments, the ships maintain labor practices that seem to date from the Napoleonic Wars, dump toxics and sludge into the ocean with impunity and breed viral infections amongst the passengers. Ironically, the passengers rarely—if ever—spend money when they come ashore… No one got their trash picked up on Lanai today because a garbage man called in sick. With one garbage collector already out on medical leave, this cut the number of garbage men on Lanai down to just one guy.

today’s Maui News editorial on the decades-old runway extension proposal. No, really—did you know that the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. and the Maui Land & Pineapple Co.—“the only surviving ‘plantations’ on the island”—are having financial troubles? It’s not easy being in the sugar plantation business these days. And they need all the help they can get. “A longer runway,” the paper editorialized, “could turn Kahului Airport into a major economic factor, including keeping open space devoted to various kinds of agriculture.” A “major economic factor?” Who said Maui needed that?… Democratic Congressman Ed Case keeps using that word “agree” when he’s talking about Dubya, and it’s really starting to piss me off. A couple weeks ago it was about the State of the Union Address. Now it’s on the proposed trillionplus dollar budget. “I agree with the administration’s proposed funding increases for homeland security and drug-related law enforcement,” he wrote in his latest press release. While Case takes Bush to task over his conversion—in just three years, folks!—of a balanced budget into annual deficits topping $520 billion, it only comes after he plays the We-Democrats-are-the-nice-party card. Please. Bush is fiscally out of control, and someone needs to call him on it. As Slate’s Fred Kaplan points out today, when adjusted for inflation Bush’s proposed defense budget is about the same as the defense budget this country spent when the Cold War was waging and there were 500,000 troops fighting in Vietnam.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 4 Makena Resort, like the giant resort developer that it is, shelled out big bucks to run full-page ads in today’s Maui News and Maui Weekly. Headlined, “For the Record….” the ads seek to “set the record straight” on the incredibly controversial plan by the company to construct a Wailea-sized “community” of hotels and condos across the street from Makena Beach. While the ad is filled with items that

police officer from killing her on Baldwin Ave. in Paia after a high-speed chase resulting from her jacking a new Caddy in Kahului. … The website eBay—also known as the greatest source on this planet or any other for Monkees-related junk—somehow managed to become a clearing house for ancient Hawaiian skulls. According to today’s Maui News, a chap from the OC known as “Magicjer” tried to auction off a skull he supposedly dug up at Ka’anapali Beach in 1969. As he told it, Magicjer—if that is his real name—along with “the son of a famous actor” dug up an entire skeleton, of which he snagged the head bone. Since trafficking in human remains is a federal offense—and rather creepy, to say the least—eBay yanked the sale as soon as local Hawaiian activists and historians began throwing a fit. While Magicjer is keeping a low profile, his website ID page shows he’s currently selling a few other items that lack the heady goodness of an ancient Hawaiian skull— you know, stuff like a cable router, a few speakerphones and a Farallon EtherMac iPrint Adapter LT Model #P. aren’t proposed, like “shoreline development,” a “golf course” or construction “around the base of Pu’u Ola’i,” it somehow neglects to inform readers that the resort will eventually include 5,000 hotel and condo units.

THURSDAY, FEB. 5 State Land Use Commissioner Lawrence N. C. Ing continues his practice of chairing hearings on projects by the land developers Maui Land & Pineapple and Alexander & Baldwin despite his close associations to officers from both corporations. The latest deal—an A&B plan to expand the Maui Business Park and Maui Marketplace in Kahului by building on 138 acres of farmland… Maui County coroner Dr. Anthony Manoukian revealed that preliminary autopsy findings show that on Jan. 23 Lisa Tomita Kaina didn’t have her hands raised in the traditional “Don’t shoot me, I’m surrendering!” fashion that would have prevented a Maui

Tonight the winners of the Makena Video Contest debuted at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). Great cause and a great contest, but it is just a bit ironic that it’s being held at the MACC. After all, the chairman of the MACC board of directors is Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi, whose name appears most conspicuously on the MACC box office. For those whose memories dim when they reach the early 1970s, Yokouchi was thenDemocratic Governor John Burns’ man on Maui, especially where the big landowners were concerned. Yokouchi—through his Valley Isle Realty—brokered a lot of sales all over the island, but it’s his 1973 deal that saw the Japanese firm Seibu buy up a bunch of Makena land that causes so much trouble today. What’s more, Yokouchi also used his connections to the LUC—specifically Maui member Tanji Yamamura, who owed his position on the Commission to Yokouchi’s influence with Governor Burns—to make it possible for Seibu people to meet with the commission in private and discuss the finer aspects of what eventually became Makena Resort. National Geographic TV reported in January on designer-breeding of dogs, with emphasis on the not yet officially recognized species of Labradoodle. Breeding decisions must be carefully made because, say experts, some interspecies pairings create unhealthy offspring. For example, mating a pug with a Pekingese would likely create a dog whose eyes would fairly easily dislodge from their sockets, and a NewfoundlandSaint Bernard match-up would produce a dog particularly vulnerable to hip dysplasia. On the other hand, Yorkipoos and schnoodles appear to be safe, and the Labradoodle is a low-allergy, lightly shedding version of the Labrador retriever.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Police in Franklin Township, N.J., charged a 20-year-old man with shoplifting two pythons from the Animal Trax pet shop and driving away with them. The man’s poor judgment was not the reason police caught him, but when they did later encounter the stolen snakes in the man’s house in January, he admitted that one of the snakes had wriggled out of his pocket during the getaway, wrapped itself around his leg, and bit him in the “groin area.”

DON’T BANK ON IT In December, payoff checks started arriving from Citibank’s class-action lawsuit settlement that required it to refund overcharges for credit-card fees, but since the $18 million payout had to be split among 20 million customers and former customers, the checks were for as little as 4 cents, while the lawyers who brought the lawsuit shared $7.2 million. A major Citibank “abuse” corrected by the lawsuit: It was charging interest from 10 a.m. on the payment-due date

but agreed to start charging it only as of 1 p.m.

UPDATE “News of the Weird” reported in 2002 that Armin Meiwes, 41, had been arrested for killing and eating a 42-year-old man in Kassel, Germany, but presented videotaped evidence that the murder was consensual (which would still be a crime in Germany but with a lighter sentence). Prosecutors have since learned that the “international cannibal community” may include hundreds of men who communicate on the Internet, including several who visited Meiwes to discuss becoming his dinner but who changed their minds (and were permitted to leave). Among Meiwes’ e-mail exchanges (revealed at his trial, which is ongoing), a potential victim wrote, of the symbiotic nature of their proposed relationship: “Hey, we seem to have discovered a market niche.” Meiwes: “We could solve the problem of overpopulation and famine at a (single) stroke.”

NEWS

The arrow of cupid will strike many hearts this Valentine’s Day. Our tokens of affection—chocolates and diamonds—create a sensation in our mouths and twinkle in our eye when we get them. But if most people knew the circumstances behind these gifts we trade between genders, the chocolate wouldn’t taste so sweet and the diamond wouldn’t shine nearly so bright. Let’s start with chocolate, and one of the oldest crimes against humanity. That’s right—slavery. The International Labor Organization (ILO) arm of the United Nations recently discovered that forced labor is rampant in the cocoa crops of the Ivory Coast, where 43 percent of the world’s cocoa is grown. While M&M/Mars and Hershey’s have secured record profits in recent years from our collective chocolate addictions, the world market price of cocoa has fallen dramatically, to something like 40 cents a pound. To cut costs, the cocoa plantation owners use child slaves or pay their workers poverty wages to harvest 400 cocoa pods to make one pound of chocolate. We can help change the circumstances of chocolate by influencing the two firms controlling two-thirds of the $13 billion chocolate industry. Hershey’s syrup and chocolate chips are delicious additions to sundaes and cookies, but both would taste even better if the people picking the cocoa bean were able to feed themselves. Hershey’s earned $334 million in profits in 2000. It seems possible that Hershey’s can support actions to end child slavery as well as commit five percent of their purchases to Fair Trade Cocoa. This would guarantee farmers 80 cents per pound as well as a liveable income that would allow workers to support their families with dignity. While the conditions of the children working on the Ivory Coast begin at 6 a.m. in the fields and doesn’t end until after sunset—earning them just fried bananas and regular beatings—life of the people in Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sierra Leone slaving over socalled conflict or blood diamonds is even more gruesome. There, massacres, murder and amputations of limbs are the order of the day. Over 800 million stones are mined every year. An amazing 80 percent of the diamonds destined for jewelry pass through Antwerp in the Netherlands,

eventually reaching stores in the United States on their way to the hands and earlobes of our citizens. Many of these stones come from wartorn Africa, where the trafficking in diamonds funds continuing campaigns of terror against millions of civilians. This includes forcing families from their homes, rape, inducting child soldiers and amputations of arms. For example, in Angola the rebel leader Jonas Savimbi’s army seized a diamond rich

valley. With 100,000 semi-enslaved diggers, he extracted $4 billion worth of stones over seven years. In response, The UN has imposed an embargo against diamonds from rebel-controlled mines in Sierra Leone and Guinea. But this has had only limited effect. If you still want to express your love with a diamond, tell your congressional representatives to support HR 918, the Clean Diamonds Act. This bill requires all countries exporting diamonds to the U.S. enforce an internationally recognized system of controls endorsed by the UN General Assembly that eliminate laundering and transshipment of blood diamonds. Next time you hear someone say, “Wow, that diamond must have cost an arm and a leg” think about how it might be true. Yes, a diamond is forever—but so is death. As we exchange emotion and ecstasy this Valentine’s Day, try thinking about ways to express your love that don’t derive from the pain of people across the world. Push chocolate corporations to sell Fair Trade Certified Chocolate, especially with Easter just around the corner. As for diamonds, you never know when your soul mate might appear, but you can take steps to keep from hanging a blood diamond around someone’s throat. MTW

Pipe Dreams The real reason we invaded Afghanistan So where’s the pipeline? In 2001 common sense, expert opinion and extensive research convinced me and other Central Asia watchers that the United States didn’t have much interest in saving Buddha statues or Afghan women when it went to war against the Taliban. After we turned down their offer to extradite Osama, it became obvious that we weren’t interested in capturing the alleged mastermind of 9/11 either. Logic and evidence indicated that the Bush Administration’s focused on Afghanistan to make it secure for a pipeline to carry oil and natural gas from the landlocked Caspian Sea. Here’s the story in a nutshell. The former Soviet republics surrounding the Caspian Sea—particularly Kazakhstan—

newly emerging energy resources. Yet here we are two years later, some war supporters point out, and still no pipeline. Well, not exactly. There has, in fact, been movement on the proposed Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline (TAP). The Asian Development Bank, which hopes to finance a consortium of oil companies to finance the $3.5 billion (originally $2 billion) project, has already spent millions of dollars on feasibility studies and surveys along the proposed route from Herat, a city near Afghanistan’s northwest border with Turkmenistan, to Kandahar, the former Taliban spiritual capital close to the southeastern frontier with Pakistan. The U.S.-led occupation coalition has promised to make paving the future TAP service highway the nation’s top rebuilding priority. The ADB has hosted meetings between officials of

Together, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian may have something like 800 billion barrels of oil and an energy equivalent amount in natural gas. Compare this figure with oil reserves in the Americas and in Europe: less than 160 billion barrels. And they will be exhausted before 2030.” Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan want to build a pipeline to carry their oil and gas out to deep-sea ports. The shortest possible route would go through Iran, which the U.S. has declared part of an Axis of Evil. Second shortest is via Afghanistan, a dangerous proposition that the Clinton and Bush Administrations have nonetheless encouraged during and after Taliban rule. Top Bushies last met with Taliban officials in July 2001, two months before 9/11. Negotiations broke down over transit fees, but top-level discussions between the U.S., Turkmenistan and Pakistan resumed in October, while American bombs were still raining on Kabul. That led people like me to speculate that the invasion—which made little effort to catch Osama—was a transparent excuse to gain control over

Afghanistan and the two nations on each end of the thousand-mile-long conduit: Turkmenistan, which would ship Kazakh crude oil and its own natural gas from its Daultebad refineries, and Pakistan, which hopes to export the energy resources to deep-sea tankers via its Multan port on the Arabian Sea. Turkmen prime minister Yolly Gurganmuradov, Afghan minister of mines and industry Mehfooz Nedai and Pakistani petroleum minister Nouraiz Shakoor held their seventh TAP meeting in Islamabad on December 10, 2003, where they decided on a 2010 target date for completion. Official groundbreaking for TAP, predicted to occur last year during a rash of post-Mullah Omar optimism, now awaits ADB verification that Pakistan can handle the anticipated volume of Turkmen gas. That study won’t be completed until at least September 2004. Far more worrisome is the Afghan government’s dubious assurance that it “will provide complete security to the project,” according to Pakistan’s official news agency. The TAP route cuts through territory controlled by Herati warlord Ishmael Khan and several ex-Taliban commanders who would almost certainly threaten to blow it up unless they receive ad hoc “transit fees.” The Karzai government in Kabul—headed by a former consultant to Unocal, the oil company that originally pitched TAP to the Taliban in 1995—can’t possibly make good on its assurance. There were about 40 of them, all mingling on the veranda of the swanky Four Seasons Resort in Wailea. Stylish hairdressers, caterers, reverends of all stripes, flashy photographers and down-toearth cake bakers. They were at the hotel on the morning of Jan. 30 as part of a Maui Wedding Association (MWA) industry conference. Tom Risko, the Maui Visitors Bureau director of sales, gave the main address. A fixture in the Maui wedding industry, Risko had once written an article called “Kea Lani Hotel’s Ten Tips for Grooms in Hawaii.” “Do not go golfing—a round of golf takes half the day, involves extended exposure to the sun and often consumption of alcohol,” he wrote. “You don’t want to be drained and tired on your wedding day.” At the Four Seasons, Risko encouraged the attendees to go on the road with the Visitors Bureau as they travel to dozens of mainland cities each year selling Maui as the most idyllic wedding destination imaginable. Everyone listened intently as he discussed some of the Bureau’s newest plans for boosting tourism. Indeed, when he mentioned that the Bureau distributes about 10,000 copies of the Maui Wedding Planner at various tourism trade shows, there were smiles all around. But then someone brought up the fact that thousands of these publications were left in storage for too long and haven’t seen the light of day. The discussion almost became heated when someone else mentioned that the 2004-2005 edition was nearly ready for distribution. Before things got out of hand, the Bureau president simply refused to speak anymore about it, saying it was time to preview the cover of the new edition. She also raffled off some gorgeous handmade address books and asked a few Maui trivia questions. The man sitting next to me whispered that catfights often break out, but never at the really nice places. Weddings on Maui are big business. There aren’t any exact statistics of how much revenue weddings bring to the island, but in 2003 alone, just over 15,000 marriage licenses were given to out of state visitors. On average, an American bride and groom spend something like $22,000 on their big day. According to a recent survey by the Conde Nast Bridal Group, the wedding business is worth nearly $50 billion a year in the U.S. This figure takes into account all the accoutrements—catering, finery, renting banquet spaces, gifts and honeymoons. Enter the Maui Wedding Association (MWA). The group represents diverse entrepreneurs in every aspect of the business: wedding coordination, photography, massage, hairstyling, catering, music, flowers and leis. Their publication, the Maui Wedding Planner, has a circulation of over 12,000 copies. They consider it a one-stop source for prospective couples. Their goal, said MWA president Mela Kealoha-Lindsey, is to popularize Maui as the world’s best wedding destination. The Maui Visitors Bureau already does much to promote Maui as a unique wedding destination. “We advertise in specific romance publications including Bride’s, Bridal Guide, Modern Bride, Modern Bride Connections and [the Canadian magazine] Today’s Bride,” said Keli’i Brown, the Visitors Bureau Director of Public Relations and Promotions. “The sales team also shares the romance message via our Destination Maui series which is geared to travel agents. On the public relations side, I share the romance message with writers and editors.” Studies show that most of the couples who come to Maui to tie the knot are from the West Coast. This

Happily Ever After Inside the Maui wedding industry By Joe Gatto

reflects the travel patterns of visitors as a whole. According to Shelby Taylor of the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, which plans to expand its wedding business by 30 percent in 2004, couples are generally in their early thirties—the average couple on the mainland is a bit younger—and they want a more intimate occasion. Usually, they bring less than 20 people with them. “Maui is the world’s number one island voted by Conde Nast for 10 years in a row,” said Taylor. “Here they can have a very special ceremony in a very spiritual place and then can turn it into a honeymoon. It is also a great vacation for family and friends and a great incentive to get people to come to the wedding.” Selling Maui as the ideal place to get married seems to be a sure thing. “I believe that couples find Maui attractive for many reasons including the island’s sheer beauty, friendly service, excellent cuisine, romantic options and top-notch service,” said Brown. “There is also a perceived safety factor involved post 9/11. What I am hearing is that people, more and more, are feeling that now is the time to marry and Hawaii offers American familiarity as the 50th state with all the comforts of home.” Being an exotic island and all, there seem to be far more opportunities to create an extraordinary wedding day than anywhere on the mainland. Many couples are choosing to get betrothed on the beach or in some breath-taking spot. Some brides are choosing to arrive at the altar in a canoe, ancient-Hawaiian style. Others are even deciding to say “I do” underwater. Basically, if a couple can dream of their perfect wedding day, someone here can make it happen. Two people eloping on the beach with a minister—or even a kahuna—is about as low budget as

they get. Many couples renew their vows during a romantic holiday on Maui, while some honeymooners choose a Hawaiian blessing to solidify their nuptials. According to Reverend Alalani Hill, local couples tend to be more interested in a traditional wedding than do people from the mainland. Their ceremonies tend to be much larger. But that doesn’t mean some mainlanders aren’t going for the lavish Hawaiian-style ceremony. “I coordinated a wedding at the Four Seasons,” said Hill. “The couple stayed in the bridal suite and I arranged a grand procession on the beach, live slack key guitar, different leis for the men that the women gave out, hula dancers, and the bride came in a canoe, although know one knew that was going to happen. “I encourage everyone to be open to possibly experiencing a deeper level of themselves here,” added Hill. “You can have the same thinking and feeling when you leave home and come here and have that here, or surrender and truly experience the flow of the islands. Let go and allow the quiet and serenity and Hawaiian way of life come in you, because that is what will rejuvenate you.” Taking that leap, especially far from home, can require some guidance. The coordinators here, from the large hotels to the independents, want the whole affair to run smoothly. “Some couples experience stress being so far from home, because they don’t know how to live a different experience,” said Hill. “I actually take them into the experience and allow them to feel the spirit of Aloha which allows them then to realize that it is a living experience and they can take it home to their marriage, their families, careers, and communities. It is not something that you just experience here in Hawaii and then it is gone. You can choose to let it continue. The Aloha spir-

it is a state of being, of thinking kindly—loving, kind thoughts and actions. They can feel God’s breath descending into them, look around at the ocean, hear the rolling surf and the drums and guide them into feeling aloha. Once they experience it inside them they know that it is something that can live on.” But generally, everyone involved says the couples come here with little stress seeing as how they are coming several thousand miles to do the ceremony. Of course nothing is perfect and weddings here suffer from the occasional mishap as well. “Every time I think I’ve seen everything, something else happens,” said photographer Tad Craig. “I’ve seen the groom jump into the pool with the bridesmaids and the fathers. People always talk about what they are going to do on their wedding night.” Craig said that there are very few couples with whom he does not connect, but one in particular stuck out. “A major league baseball manager and his wife came here to renew their vows,” he said. “He was mean and never said thank you. She was wearing an all black flamenco dress, was super thin and dehydrated from too much booze. She passed out in the middle of the ceremony and he caught her before she hit the ground. “Some people don’t know how to relax, usually the most handsome couples,” said Craig. “The brides who aren’t the prettiest have the most emotion and most fun, always laughing and crying.” Another photographer, Caprice Winniman, had her own interesting moments shooting couples who got married outdoors. “We shoot a lot of weddings at Po’olenalena Beach,” said Winniman. “The waves often wash onto the bride and groom, and I can remember one in particular that thought that was just great. Another time, the minister went to hand the groom the ring and realized that he had dropped it in the sand. Everyone jumped to their hands and knees and scoured the sand for it. Luckily it was found after a long search.” Even gay weddings—the so-called “commitment ceremonies”—are gaining in popularity. One man who recently went through a commitment ceremony said that it would have been impossible for anything to go wrong at a gay wedding because it would all be too perfect. No two guys would ever let anything go wrong, he said, since there is already so much drama and the affairs are so done up. “They are just the same as straight weddings, but more fun and the couples seem to be more affectionate,” said Winniman. “They are usually small, but recently a party of 20 people came for a lesbian wedding of two super-attractive women in their twenties. It was cool that their families were so supportive.” As it’s unlikely people will stop getting married, the wedding industry is considered more or less a recession-proof industry. This means visitors should continue to spend more money on Maui, which means groups like the MWA will continue to expand their wedding operations. As for Maui, it seems the island’s charm, striking natural beauty, relaxed air and spiritual power also won’t be abating anytime soon. Sure, weird things will still happen, like the time a bunch of friends of Paul Lamporelli of Dr. Fedwell Catering tried to bring a big wedding cake to a Hana wedding, only to have it shattered to bits after its journey in a pickup truck along the Hana Highway. No question that Mother Nature still calls the shots on Maui, but then again, Mother Nature is also what keeps people coming here to say “I do.” MTW

Run to Take Sushi right now I’m not exactly sure how it happened, but one day I woke up and had a new hobby: running. One day I didn’t run at all, the next I was training for all kinds of competitions. It starts out all friendly, but in the end, it’s just you and your legs and a whole lotta effort to get to the finish line. In my most recent race I came in fifth in my division. Not bad, eh? That’s because I have a secret training regimen. It’s called Take Sushi. During my morning runs I pass by Take, which is located inside of Bamboo Bar and Grill in Lahaina. As I run by, I can’t help thinking about the sushi I’ll be eating later in the day. Not only is Take Sushi conveniently located next to my office, but it operates nearly the same hours I do. Sushi is the perfect food to gorge on without guilt. How can there be any calories in seaweed? After all, it floats in the ocean. And who can say no to Take Sushi’s affordable prices? Toshi’s sushi bar is unassuming, hiding within the confines of Bamboo Bar and Grill. Without all the frou frou of the expensive and fancy sushi establishments, you get all the quality, freshness and aesthetics of sushi at one low price. I usually start the day with two of my favorite rolls, the Asia Roll with cucumber, tamago and unagi and the Tiger Roll, which is a delectable combination of shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cucumber and avocado. This is the perfect lunch meal, combining vegetables and proteins from the sea with seasoned rice. Top it off with wasabi and ginger and you’ve got motivation to last all day. Toshi, who runs the sushi bar at Take, is a one-man show. He makes my breakfast sushi, but he’s also there at midnight with the same smiling enthusiasm for those of us who need to eat Japanese food. On one particularly late Tuesday evening, we were ordering with zest—

Philadelphia roll with cream cheese, smoked salmon, and onion; Fujiyama roll with scallop, shrimp, onion, itogaki and dynamite sauce; and the usual Tiger roll and Asia roll. For my evening workout I usually settle on two beers from the bar. One Friday before a race I invited my favorite training partner and we hunkered down with a few beers and a nigiri combination platter. While you can’t get Japanese beer there, a Corona garnished with lime does the job. Toshi picks only the freshest items at his disposal when he puts together a beautiful raw platter. Our evening’s choices consisted of fresh ahi, hamachi, steamed crabmeat, sweet shrimp, tako, salmon, tamago, unagi, salmon roe, and creamy scallop. We considered a third beer, but I hesitated, having heard of injuries resulting from similar “over-training.” As my partner and I discussed the matter, we watched Toshi pull out

a light green wrap for sushi. He explained that since some people don’t like the flavor of seaweed, he keeps soybean wraps on hand as a substitute. I can’t imagine what wimps who don’t enjoy seaweed would be doing in a sushi bar in the first place, but I didn’t let that ruin my dining experience. But even with those pansy-ass soybean wraps, Toshi still made the sushi look delicious. I was still thinking about sushi that Sunday morning, on Race Day. In fact, I imagined that there was sushi waiting for me at the finish line. Did I mention that I finished fifth in my division? And I say, who cares that there were only five people in my division. There are more important things in life than winning some race. Take Sushi is located inside Bamboo Bar & Grill, 505 Front St., Lahaina. 667-4051. Open 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. MTW

Living Legends If you didn’t make it to Hapa’s Brewhaus and Restaurant last Thursday to watch the Living Legends perform, don’t fret. The amazing, underground hip hop group will perform once again for yet another beat thumping, booty shaking show, next Thursday, Feb. 19, at Hapa’s. Before I go on about the show, let me first give you some background on the group in case you’ve never heard of them. Back in the day—okay, I’m talking 1995—Mystik Journeyman and an artist named Grouch collaborated in the Bay Area and went on tour throughout

Europe. Once they returned to the mainland, trip 3MG (Three Melancholy Gypsies) and three other talented artists joined the clan to form the Living Legends. Today, the group consists of eight artists: BFAP, Aesop, DJ Bizarro, Murs, Grouch, Arata, PSC and Eligh. The Living Legends have a motto they have stuck to since the beginning: “Control Destiny.” It sounds a bit heavy-handed, but who’s to argue what works for them? In practical terms, it means they get their music out on the street by selling tapes from the trunks of cars. It also means they travel a lot around Asia, Europe and Australia. They’ve also man-

aged to stay record-label free, which in their line of thinking means that they can call their own shots. The group went on their first U.S. tour last year. Their first album, Almost Famous, came out shortly thereafter. Without a record label to fund the tour or the album, the group came up with the cash by forming Legendary Music, their own distribution company, which is owned by Living Legends. Heidi Linnebach, who works as a sales and marketing rep for Pacific Radio group, said Living Legends has its own flavor that couldn’t possibly be mistaken for any other group. “They are able to rap and sing acoustically and keep the beat going as if there was music in the background,” she said. “They brought together eight artists and their sound is that of eight different artists.” Linnebach said the Living Legends always get the crowd fired up, which means the dance floor tends to be “packed.” But she added that the group is locked down in one house recording an album here on Maui. On Feb. 19, the group will film one of their music videos at Hapa’s. Eventually, they will be performing on Oahu as well. In an article from Urban Alternative Culture magazine, the Living Legends were asked, “What becomes a legend most?” Group member Aesop’s answer explains a lot about himself and the way the Living Legends see themselves. “Fools is legends because we’re all tight, for reals, every one of us,” he said. “You got crews where the first dude that came out is raw as hell, but the rest of his boys sound like shit, and he’s just carrying the weight! But we’re all raw, we carry each other and carry it all at once by ourselves. We’re all hella fuckin’ talented.” After all, they are living legends.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Kurt Russell Shows He’s Boss Story of Olympic heroes hits all the right notes Newcomer director Gavin O’Connor (Tumbleweeds) makes a terrific movie about the extraordinary man who led the U.S. hockey team to win against the swaggering Soviet team at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Kurt Russell (Dark Blue) plays coach Herb Brooks with pitch-perfect restraint, empathy, and tough-as-nails directness as he doggedly trains his group of boys to play a

different kind of hockey game. Eric Guggenheim’s balanced script contributes to the success of this sports movie that transcends the genre by focusing on character, relationships and social conditions surrounding the well-executed game recreations. Even if you don’t know a “blue line from a clothes line,” Miracle is a thoroughly enjoyable film that unspools like a Robert Altman movie where many characters’ individual

essences are revealed at once. Kurt Russell is a Hollywood icon who began his career as a child actor in the ‘60s with movies like The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969). After a career departure into pro baseball in the late ‘70s Russell’s natural athleticism and alphamale charisma made him an ideal pick for John Carpenter’s Escape From New York (1981), a movie that proclaimed Russell’s innate ability to combine tongue-in-cheek humor with determined brawn and dramatic purpose. Russell would enjoy a spate of action films working with John Carpenter (Big Trouble In Little China)

when he wasn’t fleshing out serious dramas like Silkwood (1983) and Backdraft (1991). With Miracle, Russell creates a definitive characterization of the late Herb Brooks that is Oscar worthy and will stand the test of time. Russell’s wealth of acting and life experience is present in every frame of Miracle—he’s in nearly every scene. The actor is altogether available to the motivating desires of a former great hockey player out to prove his mastery of the game through his players’ golden opportunity to beat the best hockey team in the world. Russell wears Brook’s ‘70s mop-top hairstyle and confrontational madras pants with a coded understanding of their significance in separating him from the young players he controls with effective yet unconventional methods. He tells his handpicked team that he is interested in leading them to win and not in being their friend, a responsibility he leaves to his assistant Craig Patrick (Noah Emmerich— The Truman Show). But when the authoritarian coach has to tell a player who has given his all that he’s cut from the team, Russell elevates the scene with distilled and generous mercy. It’s an emotional highpoint in the movie in spite of the scene’s gravity and is an example of Russell’s characteristic grasp of implying

Miracle

★★★★★ drama without succumbing to it. Miracle opens with a montage of Cold War era television footage playing under the credits. The filmmakers make a careful and specific point about the corrosive political events of today as reflected in the film’s time period. Most telling is a radio monologue by then President Jimmy Carter, later in the film, telling Americans that now is a time to work at bringing our country together. There is a strong sense of the dire political climate of the time and how much worse our social climate has digressed since then. Even the fact that the 1980 Olympics were the last games in which America used non-professional players is a jabbing commentary at an American greed that believes in stacking the deck rather than promoting its most promising new sports talent. The film’s exacting attention to social conditions and to the action on the ice breathes through Russell’s portrayal of a distinguished man working at the peak of his personal powers. This is a rare sports film where it’s not the players that we empathize with, but rather their coach. Russell’s Herb Brooks is a flawed man with a loving wife and kids who support him on his lofty endeavor to turn a group of college hockey players into Olympic winners. Patricia Clarkson makes a memorable mark as Herb’s loving and loyal wife Patty. It’s to the credit of the screenwriter and director that Clarkson’s character is given meaningful scenes that do more than establish her wifely relationship to her husband, but also signal levels of personality and background that the rigorous actress delicately gives away with her effortless expressions. Swoon... it’s the Crooner!

Amy & Willie Friday & Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater

Friday, 10 p.m. Hapa’s There are fewer and fewer things in pop culture that can be considered timeless these days. But thankfully, Maui’s newest swingin’ swanky singing superhero saves the day! Brian Evans will be belting out the classics that would make ol’ blue eyes proud! No other music epitomizes the glamour and grandeur of amore with as much class as this. Ahh...so much romance this weekend!

The chemistry these two multiple Hanohano Award winners have on-stage is undeniable. There's nothing like Willie’s ingeniously good music and the beauty of Amy’s rich Hawaiian song to romanticize the night away. And oh, look—it’s Valentine’s Day, too. How convenient!

Going Big on V-Day Saturday night, baby, yeah… Sure, there’s the romantic candlelight dinner, the dozen red roses, the Ilove-you’s and all that coupley type crap. But if you’re free and single like me, you’re gonna want to keep movin’! I suggest checking out Los Internacionales Pasteles for the Gran Baile Del Amor Y La Amistad at Keonlio Recreation Center in Kihei (4-10 p.m.)—a little dancing to get your heart pumpin’. Then over to Lulu’s for their big singles party—it’s the live version of The Dating Game (sign up at 8 p.m.). Have your platonic driver swing you over to the SandBar in Paia to catch the sweet reggae goodness of Marty Dread. Round out this love-fest at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina with DJs Twist and Boomshot. Whew—what? There’s enough love to go around!

Whale-entine’s Day Saturday, 10 a.m. at Kalama Park in Kihei You gotta admit, out of all the animals that live in the ocean, the whale is one of, if not the most popular. They’re big, graceful, powerful and they don’t eat us. Whales are way more popular than sharks, tuna or even those big clams that sport those giant pearls. Basically, the only things that don’t like whales are those little plankton they eat by the ton. Whale public relations is incredible—we’ve got the Pacific Whale Foundation, which is putting on Whale Day this Saturday as the culmination of Whale Week, but you never hear about a Pacific Eel Foundation or Crab Day, except maybe at the Rusty Harpoon. So Whale Day—lots of food, music and other whale-related entertainment like the ever-popular "Wild & Wonderful Whale Regatta." [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Feelin’ Kinda Horny Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC The very best in funky, horn-driven jazz, Tower of Power is a 10-piece band that has been around fusing rock, soul, funk and jazz since the ‘70s. And fittingly enough, they’ll be hittin’ up the MACC on the day after that ridiculously over-hyped holiday, bringing it back down a notch to a more earthy, soulful reality. Dig it.

THE GRID

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: This is a good week to go public with your plans. You still have charm and resources on your side. Use technology in modest yet direct ways. Valentine’s Day might be good for an exotic vacation or for lessons from the Kama Sutra. TAURUS: You still got the power. Situations involving deceptive people may need to go on the back burner until more evidence shows up. In the meantime your leadership abilities are bound to propel you into career improvements. GEMINI: Brain power has always been one of your greatest assets. Legal situations should move in your favor. Find people that are totally different from you and hang out with them. What you learn now will help you in the future. CANCER: Rather than praying for sunshine, use an umbrella if it’s raining. All things are possible when you honestly display your talents and skills. Implementing your artistic abilities in a concrete way will assure career stability. LEO: Being conscious of your home life and your children will help you make fair agreements with other people. Your popularity rises as you demonstrate your willingness to work with others. Keep your relationships spiritually oriented. VIRGO: Make your business grow by focusing on your local environment. Demonstrate the power of natural health by exercising and eating right. Give massages or volunteer your time to help someone with a service you offer. LIBRA: You’re ready to defend the things that you hold dear to your heart. When you dance or make art it’s like a prayer of what you want to come to pass. When you’re joyful you have power. God/Goddess lives in the praises of people. SCORPIO: Your imagination is about to inspire some creative breakthroughs. This is a good time to enjoy your private life. Meditate on the things that you’d like to see happen in the future. Be receptive to the needs of your household and family. SAGITTARIUS: As a nature lover you have much invested in the natural environment. It’s time for you to step up to the plate and do something to protect where you live. Get friends to help support you in your cause. CAPRICORN: You’ve got the tools you need to succeed. Material values continue to put you to the test. Watch your diet. You are what you eat. Look out for crazy news. Be constructive when it comes to criticizing your partner. AQUARIUS: This is the last week of your season. Break on through to the other side by sharing your highest values. Valentine’s Day has the potential for a party or a free-love fest. Doing work around your living space will be rewarding. PISCES: The mysteries of these dark days will eventually lead to knowledge and light. Spend more time helping people that are shut-in or isolated. Use your big imagination to plot your next artistic escapade. Valentine’s Day highlights the karma you’ve created with others. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Peter Gabriel 2/13/50, Peter Tork 2/13/42, Florence Henderson 2/14/35 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

I Think, Therefore I’m Single I don’t think drinking alcohol is especially cool. I don’t think bars are the best places to meet potential mates. I think you learn more by being in a long-term, monogamous relationship with one person, rather than a series of casual affairs with many different people. I think there’s no such thing as a perfect relationship. I think anything worth having is worth working for. I think passion and desire and love are all nice but they’re not everything and certainly don’t account for just plain ol’ bad timing. I think honesty and respect and communication are vital but they’re no guarantee, either. I think when it comes to matters of the heart, women are crazy and men are dumb. I think people take themselves too seriously. I think everyone has issues and we all suffer our own internal demons, but we also have the power to confront and deal with them. I think a sense of humor is the most valuable survival tool you can have. I think nothing lasts forever so you should enjoy every minute of happiness you can get. I think, therefore I’m single. I have this very silly shirt that says “I Think, Therefore I’m Single.” I never usually wear it in public, unless it’s to make my co-workers laugh if I know I’m going to be stuck inside with them all day and not be able to venture out where normal people might see it and take it seriously. One day, when I thought no one would see me because it was one of those hectic—won’t be able to get out of the office—days, I wore it and of course, I never had so many visitors! Typical. I just kept my arms crossed in front of me the whole time and it turned out all right. But I thought it might be fun to do a little social experimentation one night so I donned the shirt and set out for an evening on the town. My girls Jen and Rachel, in characteristic loyalty and support, also made “I Think…” shirts to wear in hopes of gauging more public reaction for me. Our first stop was a barbeque at Lezlie’s house in Lahaina. On the way, we talked about what our girl band would be called. Honestly, even I am too embarrassed to say what we came up with. We arrived at the party on our beach cruisers with our matching shirts. “So what—are you guys just trying to put it out there?” asked Evan. “Or make a new clothing line? Or just see how many guys pick up on you? I definitely see some sort of feminist element involved… what do you think, Jason?” “I wasn’t thinking,” Jason said. Katy and BJ showed up and quickly made cocktails for us. Lezlie set out plates of teriyaki chicken, tequila and lime shrimp, and Brazilian beef on the poolside table as the double entendres flowed. I grabbed a particularly large sliver of steak to which BJ noted, “She’s all about grabbing those big pieces of meat!” “THAT should be the t-shirt,” said Evan. As we were leaving the BBQ, we told the rest of the crew that our first stop would be the bar at Nachos Grande in Honokowai. “No wonder you’re single!” said one of our friends, laughing. Now normally, Nachos is quite the happening, neighborhood-pub type of establishment. But this night, when our research required more social interaction, the place was dead. It only picked up momentarily when Katy and BJ selected the Bee-Gees on the jukebox. Then the other four people at the bar wholeheartedly joined in a “Jive Talkin’” sing-a-long. Later that evening, at the Hard Rock Café, the crowd was decidedly less communicative, save for the occasional “Right on!” or “Hey, I need to do that!” One guy suffering through a recent breakup thought it was cool that we were putting the control back into what he considered to be a bleak situation—being newly single and all. “You’re giving me hope,” he said, with tears in his eyes. “A lot of the guys were staring at my tits,” said Jen. “But I don’t know if it was because of the shirt or if my breasts looked especially good tonight.” Rachel concluded that she felt silly because “whether I wear the shirt or not, I’m still looking for love!” At the Sly Mongoose, bartender Tio smiled and nodded appreciatively when he saw us. One older gentleman’s eyes lit up and immediately offered to buy me a drink. It was kind of cute, but I declined and went home to wash the smoke out of my hair and paint my toenails, while Jen and I discussed giving V-D the big F-U. MTW
