Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff. email: Web:

NEEDS A HAIRCUT After reading your review of Barbershop 2 (“Joking ‘bout a Revolution,” Feb. 5) it reminded me of the barbershop I go to on Maui, Beach Barbers. As Maui continues to grow with more and more big box stores and donut chains I think it’s important to continue to support the mom and pop stores here on Maui. In my local barbershop I can relax, talk story and learn what’s happening in the community. Small businesses are vital to our community by conveying a warmth and personal touch that large corporations can’t. Please don’t let the excitement of big corporate business on Maui make us forget about our neighborhood shops. -Jason Aguire, Kihei

HATES THE MEDIA There is one Democratic Presidential hopeful who is being ignored by the media, and who stands taller than the rest (“Dean and Kucinich Square Off,” Feb. 12). He says things like this: “Big business, big government and big media are all out of touch with mainstream America. They do not know how thoroughly disappointed, utterly disgusted and fed up ordinary people are.” Whether or not this man gets the party
nomination is not the major issue. By acquiring delegates he will carry these issues to the Democratic Convention floor—and those issues will be absorbed into the national Democratic platform. Political courage of this sort is rare and remarkable. Disaffected Democrats, go to the caucuses on Feb. 24. Support Dennis Kucinich. -Rich Zubaty, Wailuku
DOESN’T FEEL SAFE An heiress of a chiefly Hawaiian lineage was shot to death in Paia, Maui (“Coconut Wireless,” Feb. 5). Firefighters worked for hours to free the victim, who was trapped behind the wheel of a cornered stolen rental car, unarmed, with a bullet hole behind her ear. The Maui Police Department has two suspects on leave with pay. The victim’s remains were taken into custody for drug testing. The victim’s privacy, which has been completely disclosed, appears to have been brutally violated. Her dignity appears trampled. Many island inhabitants are reeling with shock, outrage and utter disbelief. Others suffer from exhaustion and depression due to the incredible amount of mental energy they have been forced to expend in order to stave off the harmful effects of the extreme, sometimes lethal doses of social conditioning permeating the Hawaiian Islands since 1893. -Lissa Kahiamoe, Haiku Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. ehbrah@mauitime.com To all those get-something-for-nothing bums: You get your food from somewhere else and then come hang out at the cafe all day. You use the bathroom, ask for water, and never buy a SINGLE thing. A business is about trying to pay the bills and yes, make money. I’ve put my heart and soul into this business, hoping to provide a nice spot for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy themselves. Most people understand this and support the business by buying at least SOMETHING. You are not those people. Hey, here’s an idea: Since you are so upset, stay away from the café. Makena Resort’s Record Just what do you mean by “fact?” These are strange boasts. In effect, the Makena developers are congratulating themselves for building in a remote, rural area. As far as the water issue, that’s referring to the 1975 Central Maui Joint Venture, of which Seibu contributed a few million dollars along with A&B and a couple other landowners. Again, this would not have been necessary except for the fact that the Makena area is really remote.
CLAIM “There is NO beachfront or shoreline development proposed.”
FACT While true, this statement ignores a far larger issue—namely, Seibu wants to convert a forest near an undeveloped beach into a resort. You do not have to build 10 feet from the waterline to ruin a beach’s natural beauty.
CLAIM
As if even the 1,100 figure was somehow less appalling than 2,500. But rather than get into a fight over the exact number of single-family homes, condo units and hotel rooms the developer has proposed, just keep in mind that the eventual resort will be as sprawling as Wailea.
“Our golf course and hotel grounds were designed to preserve and protect significant sites.”
The proposal will simply “re-configure zoning in our existing property to bring it into conformance with the County Community Plan.”

Forget for the moment that there are no plans to put any of these sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Also forget that, archaeologically, the entire Makena area could conceivably qualify as a culturally and historically important site. But just for kicks, try visiting any of the preserved sites on the current Makena Resort. Start with the preserved gravesite, which lies in the middle of the golf course. Now that’s what I call access!

FACT Now this is really clever. See how harmless we are? We built a tiny, tiny park, so clearly we support the environment in all its forms. The four acres in question is the beach park near Maluaka, but Makena Resort didn’t exactly come up with the idea on their own. In fact, they had to set aside the land as part of a settlement to a lawsuit filed in the mid-1980s over the Resort’s closing of the old Makena Road. An ironic twist is even though “Eddie Chang, Makena Resident” appears in at least one ad as one of Seibu’s “friends,” Chang’s old man was a die-hard opponent of the road closure and resort development and played a key role in the lawsuit. FACT Far from a mere paperwork change, Seibu’s plan is to “up-zone” their land radically, allowing for development on land that doesn’t currently allow it. Specifically, they want 25 acres changed from “Interim” zoning—which doesn’t allow subdivisions—to “Hotel”; 75 acres from Interim to “Multi-Family”—which allows up to 10 four-story condos per acre; 35 acres from “Open Space” to Multi-Family; and 15 acres from “Single-Family” to Multi-Family.

They aren’t hard to miss, being fullpage advertisements consisting of giant “For the Record….” headlines and long lists of often-bolded typeface. Paid for by the Makena Resort developer—working for the Japanese Seibu Corporation, which has owned the land since 1973—the ads run at least once a week in the Maui News and Maui Weekly (which, for those following closely at home, still hasn’t disclosed that part-owner Everett Dowling is planning on investing in the Makena development). The ads ostensibly correct “numerous innuendoes and outright misinformation,” but in reality clear up nothing. In fact, they are little more than slipshod propaganda pieces designed to make the amazingly controversial Makena plan look a lot friendlier than it actually is. Let’s address a few of the ads’ points:

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, FEB. 9 Got another one of them “prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense” letters from one of my esteemed senators in Washington this weekend. It’s from Democratic Senator Daniel K. Akaka, and though it’s just four pages, it’s singlespaced so you know it’s serious. According to Akaka, he’s been doing a helluva job inside the Beltway. One section, titled “Senator Akaka Works to Restore Investor Confidence in Mutual Funds,” is particularly inspiring. “We must reform the mutual fund industry in order to restore public trust in mutual funds,” he or one of his learned aides wrote. “My legislation strengthens board independence and enhances the transparency of financial relationships. The American investing public deserves nothing less.” Nothing less? Actually, the American people— investing or not—deserve a great deal more. How about taking a gander at Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s Mar. 4, 2002 memo on the horrors of corporate accounting that came to light as a result of Ron Suskind’s recent book on former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill? According to Greenspan, the whole issue of corporate accounting and “transparency” is a festering wound on the American economy. How about taking on crooked auditors and corporate CEOs, Akaka? Doesn’t the “American investing public” deserve honest accounting and balance sheets?… Not sufficiently pissed off? How about now: Some jerk-off this weekend drove a speedboat over a baby whale just off Puamana, badly mangling it, which witnesses said attracted a few sharks.

with a few other governors. They were so paranoid about security that Lingle’s press guy lied to reporters about her whereabouts—until, of course, her plane landed and then he started blabbing away to all who would listen. “A big part of the effort now is on training the local community to take control of the security here on the ground,” she said, stating pretty much the obvious, especially given the recent bombings that killed many dozens of would-be Iraqi policemen… Speaking of the military, Jake Shimabukuro, that kid who plays the ukulele like he was Gabriel blowing into a trumpet, played a muted tribute in Hana to the nine Japanese people killed when their yacht was ripped in half by the hot-dogging nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Greenville three years ago in the waters off Oahu. At the time, the Greenville and her captain, Commander Scott Waddle, was the pride of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force. But a Navy inquiry later found Waddle—Annapolis Naval Academy, class of 1981—was trying to impress a bunch of civilians touring his boat, so he rushed various surfacing maneuvers in defiance of safety regulations. That the Navy brass allowed Waddle to retire at full rank and privileges rather than face a general court martial pissed off way more people than just the families of those killed and the Japanese government.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11 Do you think there’s a shortage of hotels and condos in Ka’anapali? The Cunuck outfit Intrawest does, and they want to build two hotels and 72 townhouses—all totaling 700 units—over between Airport Beach and that appallingly monstrous pink ziggurat otherwise known as the Embassy Vacation Resort. You know the place—it’s the last bit of undeveloped beachfront land in West Maui. Depending on how the county decides to add the new units to those already being built at the Westin/Starwood timeshare complex being built on the other side of Airport Beach by Kajima Corporation—makers of fine Japanese prison camps during World

War II—the project may exceed the 1,950-unit cap imposed by the 1998 Maui County Planning Commission.
THURSDAY, FEB. 12 Hawaii is America’s “top romantic destination” according to Yahoo! Travel and National Geographic Traveler magazine. Hawaii? National Geographic said that? But what’s up with the rest of the top 10? New York City? I don’t think so. San Francisco? Perhaps, but only when it’s foggy. Miami? Only if you’re a drug dealer. Vegas? Yes, but only after three or four free casino drinks. New Orleans? Certainly, if you go for booze on every corner. Aspen? Nope. Tahoe? Nope. Martha’s Vineyard? Only if you’re a Kennedy. Napa Valley? Okay, that one I’ll give you… Boy, Ka’anapali is in the news a lot these days. This time, it’s because the county coroner said he won’t be conducting a formal
inquest into the mysterious death of Lauren Crossan, the 18-year-old New Jersey cheerleader who plunged naked and intoxicated—isn’t it funny how those two elements always seem to go hand-in-hand?—to her death from a ninthfloor room belonging to two Northern California men at the Hyatt Regency. According to the Maui News, the county can’t compel out-of-state witnesses to attend and can only levy a $25 fine to county residents who ignore a subpoena.
FRIDAY, FEB. 13 The Maui Weekly does many things. It editorializes that the solution to all our traffic woes are “roundabouts.” According to Publisher/Editor in Chief Joseph Sugarman, they report stories even after realizing “that we were working on a story that had no basis in fact.” They try to pass off unmodified press releases as actual news copy—for instance, the Feb. 12 story on the Pacific Whale Foundation’s “Whale Week” came straight from the Foundation press office. And the paper even, on occasion, boosts the financial prospects of Everett Dowling, its half-owner. And this week, reporter Cort Gallup helps out Dowling’s wish to build the Kulamalu Shopping Center on Kula Highway Upcountry. Basically, Gallup bashes the Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s insane plan to build a giant shopping center Upcountry, but then holds up Dowling’s plan as the more moderate, community-friendly design. While the recent story does mention at the end that Dowling is a “part owner” of the Weekly, the paper still hasn’t disclosed to its readers that Dowling is angling to invest in the development of Makena Beach.
SATURDAY, FEB. 14 U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawaii’s Second District) wants you to remember the Forgotten War. You mean the Korean War? Um, no—the other Forgotten War—the War after the Korean War. The Pentagon just minted a new medal for guys who served in Korea after the armistice, and Case thinks it’s swell. “The services of those who have defended South Korea since the technical cessation of hostilities in 1954 also deserve special recognition for the dangers they faced.” By the way, Case’s press release came over the fax line two days ago, but I forgot about it. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD EXPENSIVE TADPOLES While the Statue of Liberty remains shuttered for lack of $5 million in postSept. 11 upgrades, Congress in January mandated $10.7 billion in “earmarked” projects (also known as home-state “pork”) including: $50 million for an indoor rain forest in Iowa, $50 million to make sure a Florida beach resort bridge remains tollfree, $450,000 to decipher the gene structure of rainbow trout, $225,000 to repair a public swimming pool whose drain U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons of Nevada clogged with tadpoles when he was a kid, $200,000 to introduce golf to youngsters, $90,000 for the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and, ironically, $500,000 for a University of Akron program that analyzes how Congress makes difficult budget decisions.
IT MUST BE A SIGN Pilgrims recently flocked to the following places: (1) Brancaleone, Italy, to see a life-sized bronze statue of the recently sainted Padre Pio supposedly weeping blood (December); (2) Passaic, N.J., to see a 2-foot-high tree stump whose shape resembles the Virgin Mary (October); (3) Bridgeport, Conn., to see a stain-like image on the ceiling of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church resembling the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus (December); (4) Bethlehem, to see a baby born with a birthmark across his cheek resembling the Arabic letters of the name of his uncle, a Hamas militant killed by Israeli soldiers (December).

And in December, Tony Lee Hinrichs, 40, was arrested in Mesa, Ariz., based on video of him in the act of burglarizing the Extreme Surveillance shop; Hinrichs appeared not to be aware that the company is a security firm that might be expected to have cameras set up.
COURTROOM FOLLIES Practitioners of the Santeria religion are such a presence in Miami area courtrooms, where they spread white dust on the furnishings to bring good luck to their friends and relatives, that attorneys have begun to complain about their higher dry-cleaning bills. Also found from time to time in those courthouses: remnants of Santeria-sacrificed chickens and goats, and mysterious candle formations. In a recent case, Haitian defendant Emmanuel Etienne claimed that his deceased victim had the power to turn himself into a headless donkey by “expelling three flatulents.”
THE GREAT STATE OF FLORIDUH Tampa, Fla.: Driver Terry Lee Crouch, 29, accidentally ran over his 6-year-old son while, he told police, playing a game in which the boy tries to cling to the rear bumper while Crouch starts and stops the car attempting to dislodge him (November). And in nearby New Port Richey, Fla., a 400-pound man fell to his waist through the floor of his home at the Orangewood Lakes Mobile Home Community and said he had been trapped there for two days; a neighbor had called on him during his ordeal, but the man declined help (October). And in nearby Largo, Fla., according to police, a 41-year-old woman offered to pay three teenagers $20 to come beat up her son (but told them to be careful with the furniture) (January).

A new dawn of a democracy cycle is about to begin. While many Americans believe politics starts in September and never have to be bothered after November, the political season is actually forged in February. As for involvement, that lasts forever. It is time to get involved. The first step
that evening and sip from the cup of social change without taking any earlier steps. You can register and vote on the same day you show up to participate. Same day registration and voting is very important—in fact, we should have it for our primary and general elections as well. Of course, if we don’t vote on Tuesday then no reforms matter.
in our festival of voting begins with a caucus in Hawaii on Feb. 24. The caucus is our chance to decide everything from precinct chairs to who we want to sit in the Oval Office. One disappointing aspect of our democracy is that just a pitiful percentage of people bother to vote. Just a sliver of society sets aside the time and energy necessary to keep our democracy functioning. All that can change in 2004 with your individual involvement. This Tuesday you have the power to make real, tangible social change. And it requires just a small amount of time. The Hawaii caucus lasts from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Many citizens say it doesn’t matter or make a difference what they vote for. Many people claim it is already decided by the time we vote in Hawaii. But here in Hawaii, this isn’t the case at all. The Iowa and New Hampshire primaries produced just one and a half percent of the delegates available for the final vote at the national convention to determine the next candidate for U.S. President. By early March, still only half the delegates will be selected. Hawaii has an opportunity to be part of history. It is up to us to stand for our rights in this republic. One important component of the primary is that you can come to the caucus
There are 4,322 total delegates that have to be chosen to decide the presidential candidate. Each presidential race has a magic number. This year, a candidate has to win at least 2,159 delegates to get his party’s nomination. Of course, if you get involved at the caucus level it is important to start thinking about how to reform our political system, both to simplify it and get more of the public to participate. The presidential preference poll is only one part of the evening’s events. There is also the opportunity for registered voters to become district or precinct officers for the political party that supports their civic virtues. There will be recognition of outgoing district and precinct officers and the opportunity for interested individuals to run precincts and districts at the community level to work with their neighbors to improve our nation. It’s very important that you show up early Tuesday, say around 6:30 p.m., so you and a friend can register to vote and reserve a front row seat for one of the most important political elections in American history. The precinct caucus is a chance to let the world know about what you believe in. Roar out loud Feb. 24 and get ready to participate in upcoming county and national conventions. We the people must revolutionize the political process. Most people aren’t happy with the current state of affairs in Washington. But unless they vote, things will not change. MTW

It certainly feels hefty The endless aisles and big lights of supermarkets can be a bit overwhelming at times, especially when you’re hungry. Back in the day, you could go to your neighborhood general store to feed yourself, as well as get that Brylcreem your dad wanted or a quick souvenir to send to your Aunt Joan in Green Bay. And you wouldn’t have to suffer through long lines or big decisions, because general stores only carry a few choice items and nothing more. Fortunately, this idea of a general store is alive and well atop the well manicured slopes of Kapalua Bay Golf Course. And the few choice items the Honolua General Store does carry are at least worthy of perusal. There’s a certain novelty in seeing a box of Old-Fashioned Moth Balls and canned Vienna Sausages amongst the regular array of market goods that makes me think twice about their previous exclusion from my pantry. Towards the back of the General Store’s old plantation style interior is a large room of culinary items. There’s a large variety of visitor-friendly, local goods— coffee, fresh fruit and condiments, as well as the ever-popular chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. They also carry beverages in the form of champagne, wine, bottles of liquor and sodas. A quick jaunt down an aisle might lead you to a bag of Smoked Beef Steak Nuggets, an individual sized box of Cocoa Puffs or a large selection of processed cheese in a can. Mmm… processed cheese in a can. The kitchen opens bright and early at 6 a.m. with all your morning basics. Breakfast can range from Biscuits and Gravy ($3.95) to the “Hobo” (also $3.95), which is basically eggs, meat and rice to the “Big One” ($6.50)—eggs, meat, rice
and pancakes or biscuits. Lunch is served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes grilled sandwiches ($5.25, or $5.75 with fries) like the Tuna Melt, Garden or Mo’s Beef Burger, Ham and Cheese or Pastrami. One of my dining companions opted for the Ruben, which had layers of maroon-tinged corned beef and melted Swiss cheese with tangy sauerkraut and shredded lettuce on grilled rye bread. We agreed it was one of the prettiest sandwiches we’d ever seen. They also serve up some of the best plate lunches on the island, with your choice of entrees like pork and cabbage, fried chicken, beef asparagus, macaroni beef and chili. You can get their lunchtime “Hobo” ($3.95)—one scoop rice, one entrée—or go big, with their hefty plate lunch combo of two entrees, two scoops rice and macaroni salad ($5.75). My other dining companion chose this option with fried chicken and the most tender pork cabbage. “The chicken was so good, I was sucking on the bones,” he said. “If I can stuff my face for under $6 and it’s this good, I’m happy.” In addition to their made-to-order sandwiches ($5.25), you can also select from various salads ($4.25-$6.75), Fish & Chips ($5.95) or the very delicious and not too dangerous—I can vouch for it—1/4 lb. Chili Cheese Dog with onions ($3.50). Seating is a little limited, but if you can cop a squat at one of their outside picnic tables, you will be brought to tears by the magnificent surroundings. Or maybe that’s just me. The Honolua General Store is located about 10 miles northwest of Lahaina, off of the Honoapiilani (Hwy. 30) at 502 Office Rd., Kapalua, 669-6128. They are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with the kitchen open from 6-10 a.m. for breakfast and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch. MTW

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT
BY ELAINE GAST
To the Edge of Eerie Puritan is all John Hamma There’s nothing too freakish about Dave Hamma, unless of course you think it’s strange there’s a hula-hoop hanging from a tree outside his home. He’s a reflective, understated art-monger and L.A. transplant with a muss of jet-black morning hair. He’s also the guitarist/singer/songwriter for the indie rock band Puritan, which just released its new CD, Come Sit By The Lake Tonight. Formerly of the self-described psychedelic pop misfits The Burning Softies (formerly Burning Sofa No. 10), Hamma used the name Puritan in the mid ‘90s to describe his side musical projects, and it eventually morphed into his main gig. “I almost changed the name later because of its associations,” Hamma said. “I didn’t want to be thought of as some strict, moralistic freak.” Hamma moved to Maui in 1999 with now-wife Heidi Nelms, who makes merry on her own brainchild band, Hinterlander. But unlike his previous musical groups, Hamma said Puritan “isn’t really a band.” Sitting in his lime green living room, nursing a Red Hook and petting his pussycat, Hamma added that, “it’s a revolving cast of characters.” What he means in his modest way is this: Puritan is all him. He wrote and recorded the songs himself, and then produced the album, in collaboration with electronic wiz kid Will Moore, under Hamma’s own record label, Skinny Chest. For live performances, he slaps a sevenpiece lineup of musicians together, including Heidi on bass, and in that simple spirit, he calls it Puritan. Not having a band to rehearse and record with can have its advantages. “I wasn’t concerned with making all the songs the same this time,” he said. “The last album, How To Move A Piano (Elsinor, 1999), was more cohesive. time, I had more creative license to play with different sounds.” Come Sit By The Lake Tonight is, at least song-wise, all over the map. It’s beat poetry drifting lost and found somewhere in the digital age. “This album is by far the most digital thing I’ve done,” he said, who admits to a lot of “electronic tomfoolery” in the mix. He described the CD as the solitary feeling of finding your identity in a new, strange environment. The first track, “Blackmail,” is what he called a “trip down the entire album” representing most of the different musical styles and lyrical concerns to follow.
“Coming to Maui, I realized the ugly side of being an American, what it all means historically to this land and people,” he said. “You recognize all the damage you didn’t take part in, but that you now have no choice but to own up to.” In his low, Velvet Underground vocals, halfsung/half-spoken and barely there at times, Hamma sings: “You can darken your flesh, change the cast of your eyes/You can reappear someplace… and tell some good old fashioned lies.” A soft haunt of a song, Blackmail wanders its way from folksy guitar picks and echoing bongos, followed by a lone whistling that falls on the edge of eerie. “I try to do things on a purely ambient musical level,” said Hamma. “I like music that starts out pretty but then has a spike to it, something that makes it more immediate.” In Come Sit By The Lake Tonight, Hamma brings that spike to his songs through trailing
guitar licks, a reverberating bass, industrial saturation, and flat notes falling on wide-bodied wah pedals. The album has all the whimsy of a hallucinogenic daydream and the bite of a lullaby gone bad. Like any good indie rock band, Hamma describes his sound more by what it isn’t rather than what it is. “People always ask me: Can we dance to you? Do you play covers? The Gritty Girl Next Door Meg Ryan Comes Out Swinging Based on the real life exploits of female boxing manager Jackie Kallen, Against The Ropes (debut directed by actor Charles Dutton—Gothika) is an unexpectedly satisfying dramatic effort at tracing Kallen’s grueling rise in a male dominated profession. Meg Ryan plays Kallen as an abstinent woman focused on feeding her ego at the expense of her troubled boxing protégé Luther Shaw (Omar Epps— Brother). Ryan’s generous performance makes the movie tick as Kallen sees her star boxer move up the ladder of success before becoming dissatisfied with her condescending treatment during a press conference. The movie is interesting for its candid and inadvertently facetious look at mores in the boxing business, and includes some well-crafted boxing sequences that reverberate with Kallen’s determined approach to the sport.
Against The Ropes
★★★★★ Meg Ryan has long been pigeonholed as the charming girl-next-door for her notable performances in romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless In Seattle (1993) and French Kiss (1995). But the depths of Meg Ryan’s dramatic abilities are only now coming to the fore after her diligent work in the otherwise misguided In The Cut (Jane Campion), and with Against The Ropes, a biopic that is much more impressive than its poorly cut trailer portends. Since her disastrous romantic involvement with Russell Crowe during the filming of Proof of Life, Ryan is embracing daring roles that separate her from the Sandra Bullocks and Julia Roberts of the world. Ryan’s Jackie Kallen is a pitbull in sheep’s clothing. The tenaciousness that Ryan expresses in her take no prisoner
Hey Meg, wanna wrestle? approach to the role overshadows flaws in the film’s clunky plotting and also compensates for Omar Epps’ one-dimensional offering. Jackie Kallen is introduced in the film as a little girl hanging around an urban boxing gym with her boxer father. A typical little know-itall, Kallen tries to have some say about the action in the ring and is curtly chided for her childish intrusion. It’s this moment of disapproval that sets up the shoulder chip that Kallen carries into her adult life. Jackie works as a mistreated executive assistant to a Cleveland stadium manager when big shot boxing promoter Sammy Larocca (Tony Shalob—Imposter) sells her a boxing contract for a dollar at a local bar to disprove her claim
that she knows more about boxing than he does. Kallen all too quickly forgets that the dollar she uses comes from Gavin Ross (Tim Daly—Basic), a romantically inclined television sports broadcaster. Indeed, Kallen goes on to prove that she knows more about choosing boxers and about contracts than Larocca, but her self-indulgent attitude toward publicity proves to be her Achilles heel when she publicly disrespects Luther at a press conference. The film’s direction by Charles Dutton is competent if not meticulous, and the film’s greatest flaw is in its unsuited title and marketing. Dutton also appears in the film as Kallen’s tough-minded but understated boxing coach Felix Reynolds. Against The Ropes

is a serious drama paraded as a light-hearted interracial mix of comedy and sports movie. While the movie never approaches the exemplary heights of Disney’s currently running hockey film Miracle, it does show Meg Ryan as an accomplished actress capable of carrying a character role with a convincing Brooklyn accent and representing a modern woman challenging the status quo. Meg Ryan’s career is taking shape in a more serious direction that shows promise for her dramatic potential to bite deeply into roles that lighter weight actresses would fumble. Her performance here is fresh and vital. It’s exactly what any actress would strive to achieve. Rated PG-13. 110 mins. MTW

Things That Make You Say…Om Friday, 9:45 p.m. at Casanova Lost at Last is a Maui band that has gone on to make it big on the West Coast, and is coming back to inject us with some global flavor. Their mixture of enthralling world music styles with trance, house, rock and folk stylings captivates the spirit and packs the dance floor. Jaya Lakshmi’s voice enchants while Om gets out of the way to channel the music. Daniel Paul, Bobby Parrs and amazing percussionist Tato round out the Maui lineup, with DJ Timi opening and closing the set with his psychedelic grooves. “It is hard to find music which resonates all the chakras simultaneously,” said Om, the band’s Digital Shaman, keyboard player and programmer. “My intention has always been to create this musical experience which opens all the energy centers. Lost At Last is doing this I believe.” This is a truly unique, international band whose deep grooves and harmony create an unforgettable live transcendental dance party experience. [JOE GATTO]
Saturday Night Stew Saturday, 9 p.m. at Mulligan’s What do you get when you mix some Hawaiian indie rock with a Latin band at an Irish pub? Um, well at least, this Saturday night’s entertainment for starters. Local band, Puritan, featuring members of Hinterlander and other talented musicians, will be celebrating their original independent rock CD release of Come Sit By The Lake. And opening for them, the Internacionales Pasteles, is a Maui band nominated for the Latin Category in the 2003 Hawaii Music Awards with their latest CD, Rumores de Hawaii.
“Get Busy” Saturday, 6 p.m. at A&B Amphitheater, MACC Sean Paul is a 2004 Grammy winner for “Best Reggae Album of the Year” and a crossover master of dancehall reggae riddims and hip hop. Surprisingly enough, this is a benefit for the Nene Hawaiian Goose—well, why not? We all love the Nene!—and also features vocalists Thalisa and Mr. Easy.

Not the Time for Jazz Hands Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC Dancequake IV is a powerful showcase of Hawai´i’s dance excellence and cultural diversity, produced by Maui dancer and choreographer David Ward. The program ranges from Okinawan dance to modern dance, from hula to Javanese dance and borrow imagery from three continents: North America with an Appalachian theme; South American with sensual Brazilian movements; and the Middle East with suggestions of a starry, magical Persian night.
And Last, But Not Least Saturday, 9 p.m. at Breakwater Er, this could be a problem. Again, Maui, why must you book three nights of fabulous, original live music in three of the most distant points of the island?! Why, oh why? Okay, so Lahaina’s newest club is hosting my little darlings of metal, Khrinj, along with local old-school punk rock band, Left for Dead, who is as a friend puts it, “None of that pop punk bullshit—they’re the real deal.” Then catch my dust as I attempt to be everywhere at the same time (good girls go to heaven, bad girls go…I guess to three places at once! Woohoo!).

VARIOUS ARTISTS “THE NUYORICAN FUNK EXPERIENCE— SALSA CALIENTE DE NUYORK” In the early 1970s when black Harlem funk met the Latino side of the neighborhood, an amazing fusion exploded. The salsa got way funkier and Latin jazz stars like Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Eddie Palmieri laid down some thick boogie. The results are collected on this compilation by Nascente, a unique British label that puts out the finest in salsa and Latin Jazz in its Salsa Caliente de NuYork series, as well as gems from around the world. There are classic tracks like “I’ll Never Go Back To Georgia” by the Joe Cuba Sextet, as well as the rawest Latin funk salsa tune I’ve ever heard, “Fuego y La Luz,” by Seguida. Ricardo Marrero & The Group take it down to Brazil with an irresistible instrumental jam combining cuicas and funk and The Fania Allstars throw out their funkiest most powerful instrumental, “Smoke.” This is high energy jamming from when the funk hit its peak in English and Spanish too. —Nascente Music 2000 [JOE GATTO]
MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO “BITTER” From the adagio strings of the instrumental intro, “Adam,” to the stinted emotion of “Wasted Time,” Ndegeocello’s third album is dark, moody and soulful. It’s equally full of lustful longing and quiet resignation, as she explores the darker side and depths of love, confusion and hope with her signature sensual mix of funk, rock and soul. “Fool of Me” is the fierce but gentle lamentation of a scorned lover using solid bass beats and lambent string orchestration. And Ngegeocello’s take on Jimi Hendrix’s “May this Be Love” manages a soft confessional intimacy that underscores its hook. A great down-tempo album to listen to or when you’re feeling especially “anti.” Yes, the title is just so appropo. —Warner Bros. Records 1999 [SAM CAMPOS]
BANDA BLACK RIO “THE BEST OF BANDA BLACK RIO”
SEAN PAUL
Gateway to Paradise Presents
LIVE IN CONCERT SATURDAY.FEB.21 6PM Show Gates Open 4:30pm
The music of James Brown and the Black Power movement had a strong effect on Brazilian musicians in the ‘70s as well as North Americans. They went on to develop their own sound and movement, Samba Soul, which took off throughout the decade. The heroes of this genre were Banda Black Rio. This collective made some if the funkiest tunes in any language. Mostly instrumentals appear here, so the language barrier can’t keep the booty from shakin’. Titles like “Mr. Funky Samba” give a taste of what is in store. Gems like “Gafiera Universal” get down and dirty, bringing the listener into an international gafiera, or old samba club. The chorus of “Chega Mais” and the deep rhythm will stick in the head even if Portuguese is not the listener’s first language. This CD will get any party started and it is very cool to hear how cuicas, berimbaus, and other Brazilian percussion instruments sound when they meet the influence of the Godfather of Soul. —RCA 1996 [JOE GATTO]

This is the now defunct alt rock group’s last album and probably my favorite of their three, which are all incredible. Although the one hit single “Fade Into You” ran the risk of being overplayed 10 years ago, I never tire of Hope Sandoval’s languid, weeping willow voice or the plaintive, retro balladry apparent on songs like “Blue Light,” “Five String Serenade” or the title track. Mysterious, sultry and deep, even when Mazzy Star turns the decibels up on the psychedelics of their electric guitar on “She’s My Baby” and “Wasted,” affording little waif beauty Sandoval to sound almost dangerous and menacing. Definitely in my picks for stellar make-out music or just another chill-time favorite, So Tonight That I Might See is a timeless classic. —Capitol Records 1993 [SAM CAMPOS] Got Music? your life. Laying low in Maui can be a good thing. Pray and meditate on the kind of future you would like to create. You’re looking good while you’re taking it easy. The new moon brings dreams. TAURUS: Make art like there’s no tomorrow. You got the juice to keep on running. You’ve got the power to have it your way. The new moon activates your relationship with the local environment. Make friends with your neighbors. GEMINI: Even when you lose, part of you wins. A good leader can admit when they’re wrong. The new moon asks you to show some unconventional inspiration. Your multi-tasking, ambidexterity is what the world needs now. CANCER: Your memory and sharp wit will reward you with exotic experiences. The new moon tests your comfort zones while introducing you to some pleasant surprises. The weekend is perfect for island hopping or nature tripping. LEO: Stay in church and avoid the casino. I guess bingo at church is a nice compromise. Sex is on your mind as you deeply feel emotion. Water sports will help keep things flowing. The new moon awakens the kinkier side of give and take. VIRGO: At ease, Virgo! The new moon helps you to relate to others. This is no time to be a hermit. You may begin a mad love affair at a political rally or a techno expo. You’re a lot more desirable than you give yourself credit. Find a playmate. LIBRA: Love is always on your mind. Your open mindedness leads you to unique relationships. Fooling around could lead to something a lot more serious. Work relationships seem to carry more weight than usual. The new moon encourages better health practices. SCORPIO: Out of your imagination life’s colors bleed onto your palette. You’re ready to paint, write, dance and sing. The new moon rules creative expression, love affairs and children. Stay in your heart. Be patient with those less inspired. SAGITTARIUS: Cutting down on the paka lolo will increase your memory and help you to remember your dreams. The new moon wants you to honor your mother and appreciate your home life. Don’t let work get in the way of ohana. CAPRICORN: Saturn’s opposition to your sun has caused you some distress. The new moon will help you move those challenges into something more positive. Contact old friends and siblings and get in touch with the latest. Explore your local environment. AQUARIUS: Your personal economics are about to take a turn for the better. Acts of generosity will work in your favor. The new moon inspires you to take your inventions to the next level. Family and home life should be sweet. PISCES: Death is over and the labor pains of birth are beginning. The new moon in Pisces on the 20th renews your soul. Your powers of persuasion are strong. Your creative potential is huge. Partnerships will take on a life of their own.

Over the weekend, my best friend opened her new adult toys and sassy lingerie business in the velvet-draped backroom of the French Connection in Honokowai, so I volunteered to assist for a few hours on Saturday in lieu of making any sordid love plans. It was nice and relaxing in that shop within a shop, knowing that the deluxe, remote-controlled Rabbit with Pearls wouldn’t point out my faults or that the black lace camisole with matching ruffle panties wouldn’t pressure me into spending more time with it. I was in control of my own destiny, mistress of my domain, single and hap— “Do you have this really high-quality, expensive feather-trimmed thong in an extra small?” asked the first Joe Schmo. “I want to give this to my girlfriend along with the dozen roses, box of chocolates and diamond earrings right after the candlelit five-course dinner I prepare as a declaration of my undying devotion.” Yeah, single and happy to be… me. After the eighth beaming couple happily purchased accoutrements for their romantic evening and the last of our 20-billion friends’ gushing announcements of so-and-so’s recent engagement, I was suddenly restless and in need of some libational social activity. So I purchased the faux fur-collared dark blue diaphanous chemise that I would be wearing with jeans that night and bid my lovely friend Amy adieu. By the time I got down to Kihei for “Maui’s biggest singles party” at Lulu’s, the place was packed and loud with glee. They were hosting a live version of The Dating Game—remember that ‘70s TV show? Back then, the hit show featured a gaudy red tuxedoed host and either a bachelor or bachelorette, who would be separated from their three contestants by a cheesy flowered partition. The bachelor/bachelorette would then ask ridiculous questions of his or her unseen suitors to determine which one he or she would select to go on a date. Practically all of my co-workers were there at Lulu’s. There was Tommy and Jen, Katy and Brad, Jeff and Jessica—wait, she’s not a co-worker, but she was workin’ it—Kim and myself, along with mega-hot marketing director Carla, frantically running around to sign up all the single, would-be contenders. Eventually, they found their first round of victims—I mean, contestants—the stage was set, the hostess was felicitous and they even had that cheesy flowered partition to boot! The first bachelorette was a young, dark-haired beauty who was a good-enough sport to smile through questions like “Bachelor number one, ask me out in your best Dracula voice” and “Bachelor number two, how would you describe yourself to my parents?” The bachelors—all also young and cute and somewhat dopey—fired back with such gems as “Hunh?” and “I dunno, I’ve never met your parents.” Fortunately, the second round featured a more experienced set with a handsome gent in his 40s who asked similar questions to his three bachelorettes of the same age group, including “Would you describe your nookie-nookie as ‘slow and gentle,’ ‘fast and furious’ or ‘the long winding road?’” and the ever-popular, “Describe your perfect man.” “My perfect man has to look good, smell good and be able to sing,” said Bachelorette number one. “My perfect man has to have a job, since I don’t have one,” said Bachelorette number three. Bachelorette number two smiled, then leaned forward to talk into her mic with slow and deliberate conviction. “There is no such thing as a perfect man.” The crowd roared and clapped in appreciation, before she went on to say: “There’s no such thing as a perfect woman either.” Of course, the truth never wins in the end. And neither did she. MTW
