For people who buy and collect books, there’s no greater thrill than perusing a shelf of volumes, perhaps running a finger along the spines, eyes bouncing from top to top. Obviously, it’s the larger, wider books—like giant financial centers in a skyline—that get the most notice. But that should never detract the serious collector from stocking up on smaller, more modest tomes. Such is the case with Anderson’s new A Walk on the Beach. Now this is a surprising book, and not simply because it isn’t the long-awaited sequel to On the Beach I first thought it was. It’s hardbound, but modestly sized—just five and a half inches by eight inches and, depending on humidity, maybe three-quarters of an inch thick. It’s also an ambiguous book. For instance, I’ve spent considerable time studying both covers, and I’m not at all clear what it’s about. The cover is a softfocus painting, almost plein-air, of the backs of two women walking on the beach. It looks like a pretty shabby beach, probably one of them East Coast beaches with no waves and cold, cold water. The words “Tales of Wisdom from an Unconventional Woman” appear over the painting. Below Anderson’s name are a couple of her previous credits, none of which I’ve seen before on my or anyone else’s shelf. In fact, there’s a lot that’s ambiguous about this book. There’s no helpful little note on the spine saying whether it’s fiction (made-up) or non-fiction (boring). But this is good—ambiguous is new, unsettling. Ambiguous says, “I’m not sure, but I don’t care.” Ambiguous works. In fact, you might even call it “unconventional.” Which works, because the book calls itself unconventional. Unconventional seems to be a running theme—the word appears on the back over a list of “Life

Lines” called “Joan Erikson’s Words of Unconventional Wisdom.” Now this confuses me—Is Joan Erikson a misprint of author Joan Anderson’s name or is a character in the book? That’s the challenge. But what’s most unconventional is that the “unconventional wisdom” on the back is completely conventional: “Lean On Your Strengths “Share What You Know “Reach for Satisfaction.” You see how it works? And there’s an added bonus. Your friend drops by, looks over the book, glances down the list of “unconventional wisdom,” then whammo! They come to the white “US $23.95/$35.95 CAN” box near the bottom of the back cover and they think, “Damn, Canadians are getting reamed at the bookstore.” MTW

This goes to that “honky” honker who grumbles about cars not beeping their car horns in the Pali tunnel. What kind of car do you drive? I want to know so that when I see you, I can blow my air horn. That wakes up the dead. I hope you drive a convertible. We’re not dummies, we’re just respectful of other drivers. Honk your horn if you want to go to Iraq. Maybe someday you and other drivers who think like you can go there and honk your horns. That would end the conflict there.

Howard Lyman and friend A single hamburger patty you buy at a restaurant or the supermarket contains beef that came from up to 1,000 different head of cattle. It boasts 40 times the fat of ground beef served a half century ago—beef that came from grass-fed cattle. That’s because American cattle in today’s high-density factory feedlots are fed a mixture of ground-up horses, pigs, chicken, cattle blood, gelatin, tallow, restaurant plate waste and manure. Before 1997, the mix included the remains of cattle, dogs, cats, sheep, goats, deer and other animals. Often, the animals were ground up still wearing collars, tags and horseshoes. The 1997 ban came about in response to an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease in Great Britain, though the U.S. has been slow to test American cattle for the disease. Just 57,000 of 100 million head of cattle have been checked over the last 13 years—less cattle than get checked in Europe in a single day. Last week fourth generation Montana cattle rancher Howard Lyman spoke about these and other scary facts during a Down to Earth-sponsored lecture on the dangers of Mad Cow Disease at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kahului. Before a crowd of 50, Lyman talked of the power the beef industry, Mad Cow Disease, slaughterhouse horrors and why he became a vegan. “You should never applaud someone before you’ve heard them speak,” he said after being introduced to considerable applause. “You can never get it back.”

Lyman began by talking about anti-beef comments he made on The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1996—comments that got him sued by the beef industry in Amarillo, Texas for allegedly violating the little known “Food Disparagement Law.” Actually, all Lyman did was talk about how the degenerative, wasting Mad Cow Disease can infect humans who eat tainted meat through means of a protein that’s not alive and thus immune to sterilization procedures. In fact, after burning tainted cattle in Europe, the ashes are encased in cement to prevent further transfer. “I didn’t say anything I knew to be false,” he told the Kahului crowd. “Everything I said I knew to be true.” Having the case tried in Amarillo was unnerving, considering that a slaughterhouse was the backbone of the local economy. “If you were going to give the world an enema,” he said in his fourth generation Montana cattle rancher way, “you’d take the hose to Amarillo. There were bumper stickers there saying ‘The only mad cow in Texas is Oprah.’ All 12 jurors were absolutely steeped in the cattle culture.” The trial lasted 12 weeks, ending in a surprising acquittal for Lyman. That only brought industry appeals, all of which Lyman won, though the whole thing dragged on for six years. “What we’re doing right now in the United States I believe is criminal,” Lyman said. “Putting people in an early grave so we’ll have more profits for the multi-nationals is

absolutely wrong.” Lyman said he spent most of his life eating meat and cursing vegetarians like every other cattleman. But he said things began to change when his brother died at age 32 of Hodgkin’s Disease—likely caused by his constant exposure on the ranch to the insecticide 245T, sometimes called Dioxin, sometimes called Agent Orange, used to kill fly larvae on the cattle hides. “Dioxin is the most deadly chemical in the world,” Lyman said. “I never thought of whether the insecticide was going through the hide into the meat. I would come home with so much insecticide on my clothes it killed my wife’s houseplants.” By the early 1990s, Lyman was actively crusading against the only industry his family had ever known, speaking first in Europe, then in the U.S. “There has never been a study in the history of the world that shows the U.S. food supply is the safest in the world,” said Lyman. “We are being treated as mushrooms: covered in mold and kept in the dark. “I don’t want you to walk out of here saying ‘Hallelujah, I’ve heard the Gospel According to Lyman,’” he said near the end of his lecture. “I want you to walk out and say ‘That’s the craziest farmer I’ve ever heard.’ Then I want you to go to the library and do your own research.” For more information on Howard Lyman, go to your library or visit www.madcowboy.com. A couple hours before the Department of Liquor Control begins a “minor decoy operation” to see if selected establishments will violate the cardinal Section 08-101-60(b)(1)(A) of the Rules of the Liquor Commission and sell booze to a kid, the usually 18 or 19-year old minor decoy has to sign a six-item checklist in the presence of an LC investigator. It’s a routine matter, alerting the minor that he has to carry his ID at all times, surrender it if asked, not drink the booze he might get sold and “answer truthfully” if someone asks him his age. Ordinarily this isn’t even an issue when stung bar owners plead their case before the LC’s Adjudication Board, but it raised eyebrows during the Apr. 1 hearing on Kahale’s Beach Club in Kihei. Owner George Brinner told the Board that his Kihei club is a small place where the average employee’s been there five years and his typical customer is at least 40. “The only thing I can figure is she [bartender Ronda Cecere] had a total mental blackout,” Brinner said, trying to explain why his bartender didn’t see the “under 21” label on the minor’s ID. “A minor in our bar would stand out like a sore thumb.” The kicker happened when Brinner read a statement from Cecere, who’s since moved to the mainland. The statement alleged, in part, that a Maui Police officer interceded before Cecere could charge the kid. In addition, Brinner testified that Cecere had checked the kid’s ID and then asked him, “are you old enough?” Brinner told the Adjudication Board that the kid had nodded. That prompted Board Member William Ghean to ask Director Franklyn Silva about the minor decoy procedures. Silva explained that “serving” alcohol to a minor without any money changing hands was enough to trigger a violation, but he never really said anything about the kid allegedly nodding to the bartender’s question. “She never said any of this,” said deputy prosecuting attorney Angela Hedge of Cecere’s post-incident interview with LC investigators. Besides, Hedge pointed out, “they have a history of being here” going back 10 years. In any case, Brinner had already gotten the ID checking charge thrown out by agreeing to change his Not Guilty plea to No Contest. Not that it helped him much—the Board still fined him $1,000 for serving the booze to the kid. MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, APR. 12 Last week we discussed the perils of elected officials beating the drum of “reform.” This week, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin offered fresh evidence, namely a tidy little investigative feature into Governor Linda Lingle’s Citizens Achieving Reform in Education (CARE). The group—which includes such education luminaries and Lingle campaign contributors as L&L Drive-In president Eddie Flores, Jr., Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and Bank of Hawaii CEO Michael O’Neill— has put out pro-“reform” materials boosting Lingle’s education plans, like her plan to split the state school board into seven smaller boards. What began last October as a simple advisory group incorporated as a private non-profit corporation on the first of the year, but it apparently never gave up its taxpayer-funded pad, telephone or website. That’s apparently a rather serious ethics violation. State Ethics Commission head Dan Mollway told the paper that using state resources to help a private political group is a no-no. In addition, the group has so far raised $80,000 in donations— $50,000 of which came from developer Castle & Cooke. “It strongly appears that the governor has circumvented state law by raising and spending funds through this private entity,” Democratic House majority leader Scott Saiki told the Star-Bulletin. As for Lingle’s explanation of all this? According to Bob Awana, Lingle’s chief of staff, no one ever bothered to check the Ethics Commission before setting up the CARE operation, but promised to do so real soon. Now that’s what I call reform!

plan to turn one state school board into seven. Somehow, I don’t think this is the last we’re going to hear of it… Tiny item in today’s Maui N e w s mentioning that Honolulu City Councilman Mike Gabbard filed papers to run against Congressman Ed Case (D, The State of Hawaii except for Honolulu). Though it mentions that Gabbard is a Republican from Ewa Beach and “longtime opponent of samesex marriage,” it fails utterly to describe the shameless God-invoking heights and gay-baiting depths to which this homophobic elected official has traveled. His activists are “prayer warriors,” his group Alliance for Traditional Marriage is “nonpartisan, nonsectarian” and embodies the “aloha spirit in action.” While he’s insisted his group “tolerates” homosexuality, he’s also written that, “It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that homosexual behavior is unhealthy and the cause of many diseases, including AIDS and a host of other STDs.” He loves describing homosexual civil rights activism as gays “trying to force their own misguided value system down our throats.” In 1999, Gabbard vehemently denounced the WB network and its Dawson’s C re e k and Felicity season finales for trying to “convince the young people of America that homosexual behavior is a good and natural thing.” Gabbard took umbrage at the “male to male lustful kissing scene” in Dawson’s Creek and the “extremely favorable portrayal of a homosexual wedding ceremony” in Felicity. If I were Case, I’d definitely want to face this guy in November.

WEDNESDAY, APR. 14 It’s well known that a major job crisis is plaguing this great nation. According to a release put out today by the public relations firm The Limtiaco Company, at least one local resort is attempting an unorthodox solution. “Hyatt Regency Maui Resort &

THURSDAY, APR. 15 Seven members of the Maui County Planning and Land Use Committee rushed to judgment last night and voted to

Got a call today from mayoral aide and 5th Senate District candidate Don Couch. He was disagreeing with my assertion last Friday in this very space that Lingle hasn’t “spelled out in any detail” how her oft-asserted plan to break up the school board will “reform” the system. “There’s a 150-page report on this spelling out the details,” said Couch, referring me to Lingle’s original House Bill 2332. Of course, Couch is running against current State Senator Roz Baker on this very issue. And while Couch has a point—there are certainly many details in the bill outlining where school board members will come from, how elections will happen and so on—my original criticism that there’s no explanation as to how all this will help make schools better still stands. The bill, like all bills, is specific on legalistic descriptions but uses vague boilerplate language for the “how?” part. “This Act provides for a new entity called the Education Standards and Accountability Commission that will establish statewide student performance standards,” reads a small portion of the bill’s introduction. “The individual school districts and the schools will determine how they will achieve the objectives set forth by the Education Standards and Accountability Commission. This discretion allows diversity in public education and empowers schools to incorporate community needs, values, and expectations in curriculum and instruction.” So schools aren’t incorporating “community needs” right now? What does that even mean? And how will a new commission will make things better? Isn’t that an instance of Republicans calling for bigger government? MTW

MAN OF THE PEOPLE

CAN’T KEEP A GOOD VAMPIRE DOWN As the Romanian government hurries to improve law-enforcement sophistication in its campaign for European Union membership, villagers in the Transylvania region are resisting police crackdowns on their traditional practice of vampire killings, according to a March Knight Ridder News Service report. Vampires (unlike Hollywood conventions using crosses and garlic) are just people who go bad upon death and cause continuing grief to family members unless they are re-killed. The body is dug up; the heart is removed with a curved sickle and burned (but it will likely squeak like a mouse and try to escape unless held down); and the ashes are mixed with water and drunk. Villagers are outraged that some may face criminal charges for disturbing the dead, which carries a three-year prison sentence.

NO LONGER WEIRD Adding to the list of stories that were formerly weird but which now occur with such frequency that they must be retired from circulation: (69) Drunk-driving arrests of people who were leading public campaigns against alcohol abuse, such as Dr. James Billow, who resigned as director of a county alcoholism prevention program after being charged with DUI in February in Newark, Ohio. And (70) the jewel thief who ingeniously swallows gems at the scene but who is then caught by police, who must wait patiently for nature to take its course so they can recover the evidence, such as Kevin Lynch’s swallowing a 2-carat diamond ring from a Salem, N.H., jewelry store in February (which he passed two days later).

At a special Friday evening session of the New Mexico House of Representatives in February (on health insurance taxes), Democratic leaders needed Rep. Bengie Regensberg for a vote and sent state police to retrieve him at the motel where he was staying temporarily. Troopers reported having to subdue and handcuff Regensberg, who was naked, combative and “likely intoxicated.” (Regensberg said the troopers were too rough with him.)

IRON CHEF IS FUNNIER The Japanese navy created a TV ad in February to encourage enlistments and public support for its mission of sending security troops to Iraq. In the spot, according to a Reuters reporter, seven actors dressed, Village People-like, as sailors dancing on the deck of a ship, singing (roughly translated), “Nippon Seaman Ship, Seaman Shipo, For Love ... For Peace” and “I Love Japan, I Love Peace, The Maritime Self-Defense Force.” The ad is needed, said a senior officer, because “there are a lot of young people and women who don’t seem interested (in the navy).”

THOSE CRAZY BUSH BOYS In a December profile, The Washington Post examined the breezy American history curriculum being sold to schools by presidential brother Neil Bush (more in the news lately for his messy divorce). The course’s premise is that future “hunter-gatherers” (i.e., rambunctious boys) don’t have the patience to read and should be taught by music, graphics and other techniques. For instance, the Constitutional Convention of 1787 is taught in a rap song, “It was 55 delegates from 12 states/Took one hot Philadelphia summer to create/A perfect document for their imperfect times/Franklin, Madison, Washington, a lot of the cats/Who used to be in the Continental Congress way back.” MTW

Live Simply So that others might simply live ance our priorities with global protection. You can start by curtailing your driving practices. That alone is by far the best way to save the planet and the many indigenous peoples around the world. Carpooling is simple. By sharing the sacred space of a vehicle, we can save more than 18 million gallons of gasoline, which would prevent 360 million pounds of carbon dioxide from being dumped into the air. If you still have to drive, think about investing in biodiesel or hybrid vehicles. And, of course, pull your bicycle out of the garage and start pedaling now and then. You probably could stand to lose a few pounds anyway. Now we’ve all heard the benefits of recycling until we’re green in the face. But did you know that Americans throw away 44 million newspapers each and every day? That’s the same as dumping half a million trees in our landfills every week. That’s gotta stop—it’s so ridiculously easy to recycle newsprint there’s no excuse for such wholesale waste. Same goes with the soda and beer cans. Every three months, Americans throw away enough aluminum to duplicate our entire commercial airline fleet. And how about drinking your morning Joe in a ceramic mug, perhaps

It’s Earth Day again, and that means we all have to stand around and think of ways to clean up the environment so our succeeding generations don’t grow up in squalor and eco-disaster. And I know, it all sounds so overwhelming—a single person’s actions can affect an entire world, yeah, sure, whatever. Well, it’s true. Just worry about your little corner of the world, and don’t bother with what others do. There is so much you personally can do right now this second to clean your immediate surroundings and reduce our modern subservience to mass consumption—you know, the main driving force behind global pollution and waste—it isn’t even funny. Right here on Maui we have a variety of companies turning a profit by helping preserve our planet. For instance, there are biodiesel fuel refiners and construction firms building homes from recycled plastic. We need to support these pioneers by using our dollars to demand more corporations to focus on the planet and not merely profit. Once we realize our power we can then revolutionize the world to bal-

The death of us all emblazoned with some witty saying? In fact, if a mere 15 percent of American college students used mugs instead of disposable paper or Styrofoam cups daily, we would eliminate over a billion of those ridiculous things per year. And when you go shopping, start using your own cloth bags. People shop like it’s an Olympic sport, and many nations around the world are encouraging people to bring their own bags. If every American household reused a paper grocery bag for one shopping trip, that would save 60,000 trees. Then again, if we just consume and eat less, we could lower the stunning statistic that a child who lives in the industrial world adds more consumption pollution than 50 children growing up in developing countries. And how about cutting down on some of the

water usage? Water is the most precious natural resource we have, yet we’re pouring it down the drain as fast as we can. Showering instead of bathing saves five to 15 gallons a morning right off the bat. Even better, save double by showering with your soulmate. And please fix those leaky faucets—one drop per second wastes nearly 3,000 gallons a year. The point to all this is that by us living simply, other people around the world can simply live. We might even find bliss through less. As you get better, you can start thinking about big-ticket items like building solar water heating systems and mounting solar energy cells on your roof, demanding curbside recycling from our county council and wearing clothes and eating foods created through sustainable practices. Carter in action pictures of the kids and the pilot went so low that he flattened the kids. They could have gotten injured. If he doesn’t know what he is doing, you have to direct him as well as concentrate on the pictures. You constantly shout ‘A bit higher, lower, left, right, left, right, I want him right underneath us, this that and the other.’ Not really ideal!” Carter said he can’t imagine doing anything else. “I love travelling,” he said. “I have been doing this since 1989, 15 years now, I still love it. I really had a passion for travel. Went backpacking around the world about four times even before I started windsurfing photography.” He got his start back in England, when his best friend, who was also a windsurfing champion, needed someone to take photos of him. Carter took the offer and followed him to Australia. “I didn’t really know what I was doing,” he said. Today Carter is on a retainer with Windsurf magazine and works as a Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) official photographer. Occasionally he also does freelance jobs. But he has to book and pay his own travel most times, which can actually get a bit expensive with all that luggage he likes to haul around. Carter said the PWA circus has become a second family for him. But when he returns to England, he looks forward to seeing his wife and two young kids. With a turnover of only $70,000, the job isn’t that well-paid either. But Carter said he’d never swap it for eight hours in an office every day. “It’s not all that glamorous,” he said. “It’s too much time in airports and planes. If you sum it up, I spend probably 30 days a year just sitting in planes. Hey, I love it. I am doing something I enjoy for a living and I get to sit on a beach in Hawaii in the sun and get paid for it!” MTW

John Carter always flies with about 66 pounds of carry-on luggage and another 150 pounds that gets stowed in the cargo bay. His gear includes five cameras, 10 lenses, more than 200 rolls of film, two pelican cases full of housings, tripods and light meters, fins for swimming, water housings for mast-mount cameras and whatever tools he needs. All told, it’s worth about $25,000. The professional windsurfing photographer from England itemized his travel kit as we were flying along the North Shore recently in a bright yellow but doorless Windwards helicopter. He was on assignment for the Starboard catalogue, shooting several different sailors, boards and maneuvers. “You are burning up $100 every 10 minutes in helicopter fees,” he said. “Usually a shoot like this takes half an hour and you simply cannot waste any time by making mistakes! I use at least 14 rolls of film, 36 pictures per film, so [I take] probably around 500 pictures.” Today the subject is mostly world champion Kevin Pritchard. It seems I picked an almost perfect day to peek over Carter’s shoulder. Carter admitted he doesn’t get many jobs this well prepared. “Starboard is very organized,” he said. “They got all their guys ready on the beach. They have a strict routine of who is going in which order and I have been briefed on that. To keep it under control, they keep all the sailors on the beach. The next one comes out as one goes in. It’s very efficiently done, whereas some of the shoots I have done before, they have 10 guys on the water and no one knows what they are doing. “Every time the sailors hit a lip or do a move there is a different thing going on,” he said. “You have to position the helicopter in the right place above the waves and wait for the guy to come up and hit the lip. Right then you hammer on the motor drive of the camera and think about your framing, the whole process. There is a lot of stuff going on. Positioning the helicopter is probably the most critical thing.” He isn’t kidding. I try taking some pictures of Pritchard as he sails underneath us, but it’s not easy. Especially not when you are then trying to do some “artsy” stuff. “One of the things you do is to get the blurry effect, it’s called speed blur, where the guy is stationary but all the water is moving,” said Carter. “He looks like he is flying. I hold it rock steady on a slow speed like a sixtieth of a second and try to not be moving and go along and shoot. “Normally I have the microphone on all the time so I can talk to the pilot as we go along,” he added. “The other day we took

Armory Heavyweights 808 gets to the roots of hip-hop

COVER STORY

Allan Chua was born in the Phillipines but grew up in San Diego, California. He joined the army then moved to Oahu about six years ago from Korea. Now 26 years old with a new baby, Chua divides his time between his family and his love for all things hip-hop. He gave up an executive marketing job at the Marriott to found The Armory Hawaii a little over a year ago on Oahu. “The whole clocking in, clocking out thing was too much,” said Chua. He recognized that there were different hip-hop events being held separately for break dancing, graffiti and rap, but he was interested in creating an outlet to do it all together. It began with a free park jam on Oahu, much like last Sunday’s event in Wailuku. Chua organized an informal stage, four turntables and a live hip-hop band. He also sold merchandise from his friend’s mainland Wild Style clothing line. After the overwhelming success and support from the local hip-hop community, Chua opened The Armory Hawaii shop in Honolulu, which features underground hip-hop fashion, music, videos and accessories. Together with Armory DJs Revise, Abel and Yogurt, Chua is continuing to host events on Oahu, such as the traveling art exhibit that views Shrek through the eyes of a graffiti writer. Or a dance competition at the Filipino Community Center next month. He’s also branching out, holding events on neighbor islands like Maui. He’s very serious about this. When last-minute insurance hassles shut down Chua’s plans for a big event at the War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku, he simply moved the event outside.

“Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “It works out much better this way.” Chua continued the competition, personally funding the smaller Apr. 18 showcase as a precursor to a larger Maui event he wants to hold in June. While the event took on a decidedly more informal “old school” feel, he was quick to point out that the battles would still be legit. “We’re just going to keep it fun,” he said. “Just something to do on an afternoon, like a warm up!” Armory Heavyweights: 808 Edition is a three event hip-hop competition that culminates with a Freestyle Session in November on Oahu. The final event will play much like the smaller competitions preceeding it, only with a $10,000 purse. There will be breakers from Japan, Europe and the mainland, as well as the Hawaiian Islands’ finalists. On Saturday, with Possess One mixing the sound, Chua passed out signup sheets for the battles. The three-on-three and one-onone b-boy/b-girl break dance and the MC/lyricist freestyle battles warranted several enlistees. But the DJ/turntablist battle seemed to be deficient in counts. “Oh, the DJs must be still sleeping ‘cause they were up drinking last night!” said Chua. As the signups continued, young dancers practiced on the 12 by 15-foot linoleum mat that was duct-taped down outside. One tall and lanky guy, wearing a black t-shirt and loose jeans, did an impressive maneuver, contorting his body until he had his legs flipped over his head and held parallel to the floor. The crowd

whooped their approval. “Can anybody top that?” asked Chua, now on the mic. “Make some noise if you all love hip-hop! Make some noise if you all KNOW hip-hop!” Then he announced that it was “trivia question time.” “Whose alias is ‘A Man with a 1000 Moves?’” Chua asked. There was some murmuring but no one answered immediately. “You all didn’t watch Freshest Kids?” asked Chua, incredulously. “It’s like the dopest hip-hop documentary ever!” Another guy practicing his moves suddenly sprawled out on the floor, grimacing and holding his back. After a quick massage, he got up and walked over to Chua. “I have a sprained thumb, broken hand, dislocated wrist, messed-up elbow and a bad knee,” he said as he signed up for the first battle. “What’s your name, kid?” asked Chua. The b-boy smiled. “Damage,” he said. For the one-on-one break battle, CBG joined Damage at the

Later, Chua set the scene for the MC/lyricist battle: Two rounds, 30 seconds each, one-on-one freestyle rap. With the DJ spinning, each rapper would be judged on originality, flow, skills and response, feeding off each other as they boasted and rhymed over the beat. Again, the crowd’s reaction would gauge who had the power. The competition was fierce round after round, emcees blasted rhymes, wielding words that cut like swords at their opponents. Terms None held his own through two sets of rounds, ending up in the final battle against an equally formidable Tricky Monkey. Even though the final rounds were extended to a heated 45second freestyle for each lyricist, the crowd could not determine a winner—both maintained such a strong flow. So Chua called a tiebreaker: A 30-second, one topic battle on “one-legged females in hip-hop.” Apparently this was a subject Terms None knew something about, as he was ultimately elected to go on to represent Maui in the Freestyle competition on Oahu. While everyone recovered from the intense barrage of the last battle, break practice resumed on the mat. Girlfriends reclined on beach chairs and smiling b-boys and b-girls walked around highfiving and praising each other. Soon Chua called for the next round of contenders to prepare for the three-on-three team break dance battle. “We’ll get the handshakes out of the way now,” he said. “I don’t wanna see that during the battle!” Three guys wearing white “Bad Habitz” t-shirts lined up on one side of the white square, while the “Villains” in black faced them on the opposite side. The floor mat was then pushed aside, as each member of the team took their chance to face off against the other team, alternating their turns on the ground in the middle. Sometimes the team would play off each other, using partners to exaggerate steps and heighten flips. Because the moves required so much upper body strength, the competition was mainly male-dominated. But there was one b-girl who represented her team well and made the crowd go wild. Head spinning and

backwards somersaults also warranted a lot of response. Both battles ended in one-maneuver tiebreakers. “Damn!” said Chua. “Y’all been practicing out here in Maui, yo!” The final battle was a six-on-six team dance-off that drew a crowd of close to 100 people. mat, each lining up on opposite sides. Chua announced the rules and said that for this competition, the crowd would judge the outcome. “We’re looking for originality and style,” he said. “Don’t step out and step back in—this is a b-boy battle, not an acrobat battle!” When the DJ’s mix kicked in, each dancer in turn would step into the square, moving their feet sideways and onto their toes, spinning on their knees, head, hands and elbows. CBG ended one break with his head towards the floor and balancing his entire body on one arm, legs up and bent backwards in a twist. Then it was on to round two.

On the eve of my 30th birthday, I did what any girl in her last desperate state of 29 would do: I pinned my hair into pig tails, slid into a sparkly shirt from the store Forever 21 and looked for the closest thing I could find to an Asian Las Vegas. I found it at Tiffany’s in Wailuku. Lucky for me, it was Saturday night, which meant ‘80s disco. Walking into Tiffany’s is like walking into a really local bar smack in the middle of The Strip. The scene is all flash and buzz: televisions blaring, video casino boxes beeping, DJ pumping and disco lights a-spinning. Pleather booths line the orange terra cotta walls and big blue bulbs swing from bamboo rafters. Taking one look at the row of barflies sucking down the last of their happy hour specials, I turned to my friend Ted. “Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right?” We sat down next to the life-size fish bowl and thought food. The one lesson I learned in my 20s was that if you’re going to go out drinking, it’s wise to front-load with a mound of fried noodles. Thankfully, Tiffany’s has a book-length menu featuring 103 items of local-Asian flare—noodles, seafood, stir fries galore. We began with the Bento Box Special. Bento Boxes remind me of an airplane meal—everything served neat and compact in its place. Only in this case, the food was way better than any in-flight service I’ve ever eaten. Tiffany’s delivers a plate of crisp pork dumplings called Mandoo, steaming hot on the first bite, next to a thick, crusted tempura vegetable served with spicy dipping sauce, a succulent beef sauté and a side of sticky rice. At our server’s recommendation, we next tried the Miso Butterfish. This rich dish is served as a hearty three filets (beware of bones) served over oil-drenched onions. Its tender white meat flaked in my mouth, each savory bite dripping of miso. “I have no idea what butterfish is, but dammmn, this is good,” said Ted after one taste. Tiffany’s entrées aren’t short on sides. The butterfish came with tiny bowls of colorful kim chee, pickled onions, cabbage, bean sprouts, sweet potatoes and radishes. All this and a heaping side of salad for less than 12 bucks. The restaurant has been open a little more than a year for lunch and dinner, and just recently opened its doors late night for “drinkers and pupu,” said owner Diane Orite. Originally from South Korea, Orite moved to Maui 18 years ago and also owns Asian Cuisine and Sports Bar. “Here at Tiffany’s, Fridays and Saturdays are packing nights (when the

Heaping, yet succulent

place gets packed) with our regulars,” she said with a bright sassy grin. Tiffany-regulars Doug and Debbie agreed. “We come all the way from Upcountry because this place has a personality,” said Debbie as the couple worked their way through a basket of boiled peanuts and a couple of cold ones. “There’s just nowhere on the island like it.” There’s also nightly karaoke, featuring anyone’s favorite Vegas show tunes. “We start karaoke every night at nine, and sometimes the singers are so good, I say to myself, ‘holy moly!’” said Orite. “‘Where’s this song coming from?’” The mere mention of karaoke sent me running to the bar to order a round of margaritas. When I returned, Orite laughed as I licked my salty rim. “Don’t worry, you won’t get drunk here, not with all of our pupu,” she said. “Everything is fresh—lots of garlic and ginger. We use no MSG in the food, and we change our cooking oil everyday. Taste the tempura. It will melt in your mouth.” It did. But no amount of pupu was going to keep me from getting this party started. I pleaded with the DJ to play the kind of Hair Band ‘80s that would really let me re-live my youth. But his tastes were different from mine, which meant it was Hammer Time. No matter. A couple more margaritas later and my friends and I were belting out Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam along with the best of them. Tiffany’s is located at 1424 Lower Main Street, Wailuku. 249-0052. Time Control and The Brady Bunch Movie

Craig: Time control?

Second City comedy troupe makes us laugh

Did he say “mime control?”

Andy: Time control?! What superhero—

Craig: Mastery of the time! I could be able to go forwards or backwards in time!

Chicago’s notorious comedy theater Second City has spawned several famous performers since it opened 45 years ago. Saturday Night Live alumni Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, John Candy, Mike Meyers, Gilda Radner and Chris Farley are just some of the comedians who developed their twisted sense of humor there. And next week, Second City will present a new crop of cast members performing improvisational comedy and sketches. We talked with two of them via phone.

Oh, that’s a good one! I thought you said “mime”—you know, like miming? Craig: [mockingly] I want to be a super mime one day! I want people to really believe the objects are there! Andy: Put down there that Uhlir likes mime—he wants to be Super Mime! If I put the Brady Bunch thing in, I definitely have to put the mime thing in, too.

Craig Uhlir and Andy St. Clair: Hi, Samantha! Craig and Andy here—

Andy: Thank you, I think that’d be right. Mime Man—I think that’d be the column. I think mine would be—I think I gotta go with flying. I just wanna fly. Fly or be invisible.

Maui Time Weekly: Um, okay, which one’s Craig and which one’s Andy? Craig: I’m Craig—

What kind of scenes can we expect from you on stage at the Castle Theater?

Andy: And I’m Andy— Have you guys been here before? [Craig, I think]: Our company has not, Second City has. I think they were there last year. Neither of us have been there before.

The new crop ity of wearing a giant hot dog costume.

What do you think the funniest thing about Hawaii is? Andy: I’d have to say The Brady Movie. [Sarcastically, sort of] That is the best all-time Hawaiian movie ever. Andy: The tiki dolls! What was that thing that drove the girl crazy—tiki doll, right? I’ll bet Hawaiians hate that show. I would if I was from Hawaii. Jerks like me say crap like that… What or who guided you into improv and, ultimately, Second City? Craig: Well, that’s a great question, Samantha! [Clears throat] My previous employers urged me to start at Second City. I was working for them in the capac-

You’re not serious. Craig: No, I’m serious. I was barking at people near the Sears tower in a giant hot dog costume. It urged me to maybe explore some ha-ha over at the Second City. Mmm hmmm. Andy: I moved to Chicago in like, ’98. I went to college and got an acting background and so I moved to Chicago to be an actor actor, like doing more scripted material, like plays, for example. And, uh, I just ended up taking classes over here for about four to six months after I moved to Chicago and I just kinda stayed with it. Do people expect you guys to be funny all the time?

Andy: Oh, yes, they do. More times than not, I guess—which is a good thing ‘cuz then it becomes kinda fun to see if you can hit that certain level or not. Right, like a challenge. Andy: I…it’s just terrible, like the Brady Bunch thing… if I could take that back now I would. Once it’s out there, it’s in the atmosphere! Craig: I need you to make sure that gets in the paper, Samantha. Andy: Keep that out of the paper! Craig: No, you need to get that in—we have other cast members that’ll love to know that! If you could have a superhero power, what would it be?

Craig: You get all kinds, Samantha. You get some political humor there or political satire, what have you. We’ll be doing some improv— we’ll be making stuff up, right on the spot, right in the middle of our show. We have some musical scenes, we have a genre scene in there, some film noir scenes. What’s your theme song? Craig: Oh, right now it’s that Walking Tall theme song. [Singing] ding a ding a dow dow, dinga dinga dinga dow dow… Uh, how do I spell that? Craig: Ding, ding… D-I-N-G…. Andy: [slowly] Donga donga donga… Craig: Yeah, that’s just how it sounds. Second City comedy troupe will perform live on Thursday, Apr. 29, at 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Tickets are $20-30. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Freaky 30 Jennifer Garner struggles with acting younger Jennifer Garner (Alias) breaks character by forgetting that she’s playing an awkward 13-year-old girl in a 30-year-old woman’s body in this junior comedy based on the same plot conceits as Big (1988) and the more recent Freaky Friday. Overnight, Jenna-the-goofy teenager (Christa B. Allen) becomes Jenna-thepopular adult managing editor of a woman’s magazine after her young admirer Matt (Sean Marquette) sprinkles “wishing dust” on her 13th birthday.

13 Going On 30

★★★★★ Mark Ruffalo (In The Cut) adds much needed ballast to the movie as the adult version of Jenna’s former friend Matt, whom she dumped to curry favor with her pretentious girlfriends. The apocalyptic core of the movie is an ill-advised line-dance sequence imitating the Michael Jackson “Thriller” music video. If that’s not enough to scare you, then you might just be young and girly enough to delight in director Gary Winick’s (Tadpole) middling attempt at teen comedy. When we first meet gawky teen Jenna, she’s demoralized over her ugly school photos and busy sucking up to a clique of hip-chicks by writing a term paper for their leader Lucy. But she’s effortlessly comfortable with her chubby neighbor Matt, who obviously adores her and gives her some “wishing dust” with a personally crafted dollhouse at her birthday party, which is soon overrun by cool kids that the new wave music loving Jenna hopes to impress. Humiliation is on the menu when the girls nominate Jenna for a game of “Seven Minutes In Heaven,” that involves her spending seven minutes blindfolded in a dark closet with one of the jocks that she has a crush on. Matt returns to the party just as Jenna’s pernicious pals are sneaking out, and finds his love interest sitting in her basement closet awaiting a kiss from another boy. Jenna wakes up the next morning in a 30-year-old body with a grown nude man taunting her around her luxurious Manhattan apartment. It’s revealed that over the past unseen 17-years Jenna has turned into a tough if pretty bitch. She doesn’t speak to her parents anymore and her staff at Poise magazine fears her every move. Jenna is bewildered to learn that she’s turned into such an abominable person and sets about rescinding her frequently referenced dubious behavior. She immediately tracks down her “best friend” Matt, who now works as a photographer and is engaged to be married in two weeks to a woman he’s not too keen about. Matt is slow to com-

We’re shocked, too prehend the turnaround in Jenna’s character after she unceremoniously banished him from her life by throwing her dollhouse at him as kids, but he’s nonetheless hesitantly curious about this attractive aberration from his past. The glossy world of magazine publishing is where most of Jenna’s childish identities are revealed, elevated and eventually overhauled. Andy Serkis (The Lord Of The Rings) plays Jenna’s effeminate editor-in-chief Richard Kneeland who delivers an ultimatum to his staff to invigorate their women’s magazine, which is being “scooped” every month by a rival publication. It’s in this office environment that Garner loses touch with the 13-year-old girl she’s supposed to be concealing. The key elements that made Freaky Friday fly as a movie were Lindsay Lohan’s and Jamie Lee Curtis’ abilities to maintain opposing sides in their discomfiting skin. Garner too often seems so adult that you feel like you’re watching a grown-up romantic comedy with some kids thrown into the story for window dressing. When Jenna meets a teenaged girl neighbor in the elevator of her building, it feels too much like what it is, an adult woman chatting up a teenager. You keep waiting for a girl-to-girl shift to happen, but instead the young girl starts to act older to compensate for Garner’s performance. In all fairness, part of the problem stems from the script’s insistence on the bad person Jenna had become as an adult. Enough information is given about her ill treatment of others that deep down the audience is led to harbor indignation against Jenna for her unseemly ambitions. The unviewed 17-year period, in which Jenna rose to the heights of New York publishing by crushing toes beneath her, shows her to be even worse than the nasty girls she aspired to associate with as a teenager. The real Jenna got her wish, and it had nothing to do with romance or honesty, and you don’t have to read between the lines much to see that. Rated PG-13. 97 mins. MTW

Turtle Nests Tuesday, 6 p.m., Maui Ocean Center This is a free lecture that will focus on the nesting habits of hawksbill turtles, known as honu ‘ea in Hawaiian. These particular turtles are listed as a critically endangered species, and there may be only a few dozen nesting females statewide, including right here on Maui. The research coordinator for Hawaii Wildlife Fund Project ‘Ea, Cheryl King, will explain how current conservation projects are aiming to restore and protect hawksbill turtle nesting sites and what you can do to help. Certainly not touching or harassing them in the wild would be one way, yes?

DA KINE CALENDAR

To celebrate Earth Day, the day we celebrate the Earth and how we shouldn’t pollute it all to hell, all the ocean museum people and shops in Ma’alaea are offering free one-hour cruises on biodieselpowered catamarans, as well as the usual array of discounted food, souvenirs and stuff for the kids. Oh, and if you bring in three (3) plastic milk jugs suitable for recycling into a boardwalk for the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, you get a free poster of a whale or dolphin! Isn’t that the coolest! Oh, and please make sure you cleanse the jugs beforehand of all their sticky, icky, milky residue. It’s the least you can do. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

DA KINE CALENDAR

THE GRID

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: You begin thinking in terms of what you have. You need money. Hard cold cash is necessary for modern survival. By Wednesday you’ll feel your heart warming up. A sensual attitude towards food, hardware and material success invades your being. TAURUS: The days keep getting more beautiful. Move with confidence. All things spring is what you’re all about. Start with skipping before doing somersaults. Practice listening with a quiet smile. Catch up on old news over the weekend. GEMINI: You keep on having close calls with people who know your past. Much of what you’re doing is based on impulse. Beauty and assertiveness are in your court. Your personal values are much more under scrutiny. Family issues can be resolved. CANCER: It’s time to take a break from all of your responsibilities. Essentially you’re a social being that likes to treat friends as family. A new social life is taking form. The weekend features a cancer moon. Have a garden party. LEO: It’s time to be more career-conscious. Opportunities for a better job may be in the air. Don’t quit your day job just yet. Start researching your fields of choice and start looking for opportunities to express your talents. VIRGO: Your luck is about to improve. I hope I’m not jinxing it by telling you this. Your many good talents and skills are easily recognized. Your ability to learn new things is enhanced. Take everyday as a day for discovery and unusual pleasures. LIBRA: The time for flirting is over. It is now time for some hardcore intimacy. If you’re alone you may have to settle for spiritual intimacy. Your ability to take risks is up. Show your confidence. Hit a home run, golf a hole-inone or bowl a strike. SCORPIO: In your case, a little more flirting and a little less work could do you some good. Diving into big trouble has been your specialty. Don’t fall in love. Learn to land there gently. The weekend looks perfect for an exotic getaway. SAGITTARIUS: You’re looking good while you play for the team. Hard work is one way to get a promotion; dating the boss’ offspring is another. Don’t gamble on your health. Exercise, take supplements and eat right. Enjoy your loved ones. CAPRICORN: Finally someone notices you taking the extra time to look beautiful. You’re ready to play yet you’re a little bit apprehensive. Have some faith. Love without being worried about winning. Creative ideas will slip into your mind through the back door. AQUARIUS: Your way of thinking may not be the most balanced point of view. The first gift you’re going to give yourself is the realization that you’re a hypocrite. Be okay with your down side. Learn to love your imperfections as you learn to love the imperfections in others. PISCES: Material strength gives way to information gathering and environmental concerns. Pay less attention to things and more attention to friends and family. The weekend puts you in the mood for serious play. Activate the lover, artist and poet in us all. kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

An After-School Special with Jen My friend and roommate Jen and I had a fabulous day at Baby Beach in Lahaina last Thursday. We frolicked in the water, singing Bon Jovi and that “Milkshake” song, with Jen dancing—as she does—and basically putting on a twisted seashore performance for the two guys who, for some reason, happened to be lurking nearby fully clothed. We also bitterly made fun of the couple making out next to us in the water by serenading them with a constant flow of Air Supply songs. That heartfelt rendition of “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” really seemed to choke them up a bit. So then it was off on our bicycles to Request Music in the industrial park to say hi to Jerry. I picked up the used Eurythmics and Skinny Puppy CDs, while Jen got Bonnie Raitt, the soundtrack to Starsky and Hutch, and Night Ranger’s Greatest Hits. Oh yeah, and of course, Air Supply. We were already there, so we went ahead and stopped by the Sly Mongoose. Every year, the Goose’s famed accountant, Doug Shue, throws an End-of-Tax-Day party on April 15th. Steve fired up some steaks on the grill and there was salad, fresh strawberries and bread. It was really wonderful except that I had just been to the dentist and couldn’t quite chew yet. So I sucked on a piece of meat for a while and periodically asked Jen if I was drooling. Soon enough, we rode our bikes back to the Sugar Shack to get ready for the evening’s festivities. With Jen riding in her latest, brand new John Madden stilettos—as she does— we cruised our Schwinns down to Compadres in support of our very talented but grumpy, hard rock-star friends, Zero Tolerance. They were opening for a scary metal band from Arizona called BLESSEDBETHYNAME. Actually, they were quite good. After the show, we decided to get one more cocktail on the way home and call it a night. We stopped in front of the Goose but as Jen tried to get off her bike, something went wrong, and well, she fell. Her head hit the planter and the bike toppled over her. I picked Jen’s bike up off of her, and with blood streaming down the side of her face, she held her suddenly grotesquely disfigured arm up. “It’s not supposed to look like this, right?” she asked. People quickly came from inside the Goose to help. Willie K made his pareo into a sling and Touche comforted her, while Donna called the cab. Once at the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, Jen was whisked away into the emergency room. The doctor soon diagnosed that Jen’s wrist was indeed broken and needed to be reset. She was in serious pain. The nurse prepped her for morphine and the doctor told her he would be asking her to count backwards from 100 to determine when the dosage was taking effect. Jen assured him she would need a few doses. After about four of them, the doctor asked her to count backwards again. “100, 99, 98, 97…” said Jen, “96, 95, 94, 93…” While the nurse shot her up with another dose of morphine, Jen continued counting. “79, 78, 77, 76—that was the year I was born—75, 74, 73…” While the doctor stitched up the large gash on Jen’s face, I fielded calls from her concerned friends en masse. It took a little convincing that Jen was okay, what with all the yelling in the background caused by the somewhat medieval-looking, resetting the broken bone procedure. Afterwards, a very doped-up Jen sweetly smiled at her caretakers. “You all are dolls, really,” she said. “Thank you for being so cool.” And now my poor roommate sits at home with one broken wrist, a black eye and six stitches, waiting to put her hair up and shave her other armpit—as she would like to do.
