POSITIVITY? I noticed that Sam Campos featured a company that came out there to do a HipHop event—808 Heavyweights (“Broken Bones and Fightin’ Words,” Apr. 22). It was a good story, but I was just wondering... there is a company called 4 Corners that have done shows on Maui a couple of times and no one did a story on them. Why is that? Maybe you folks should pay a little bit more attention... I have met the owners of 4 Corners and they stand for something that is rarely seen these days: Spreading positivity [sic] and giving our youth an alternative to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs, sex and violence. You could have asked anyone at that 808 Heavyweights show “Do you know who 4 Corners is?” and you would have gotten a background on a company that would have made a BETTER story than The Armory. -“B-Boy Horizon,” via email
KID LIKES LC WATCH! Where is Maui Time’s parental advisory for language? Imagine my horror when my seven-year-old read me LC Watch (“No Respect,” Apr. 1) [which included] fourletter words, over breakfast. What’s the deal, Mr. Editor? Did you space out and forget to *** a few letters? Or is it Maui Time’s view that it is acceptable to use blatant profanity in quotes for our children and teens to read? Does it really need to be spelled out? Now that is NO RESPECT! -M. DuBois, Kihei The Editor Responds: I can’t tell you how much it warms my heart to hear that your seven-year-old is a fan of LC Watch. There’s always a great deal of concern, even trepidation, that comes with the start of any new column—especially one that deals with the local liquor industry and the Maui County Department of Liquor Control, which regulates it. Nonetheless, it’s gratifying to see that such a young demographic— one we never hoped to reach, considering how so few seven-year-olds can drink and/or show interest in county bureaucrat-
ic machinations—is already on board. As for your specific concerns about the use of certain words and phrases that some people consider off-color, we tend to use such words only when included in direct quotes.

Why don’t you add a few feet to your daily exercise and park in one of the other open spots in the parking lot, and leave the handicapped spots to those who really require them? A little Aloha goes a long way.

Get Rid of Progress Or how we can save Hawaii
There’s more to Hawaii than this I was flying back to Maui recently on Continental Airlines when I learned something remarkable about these islands. “Tourism is a religion of Hawaii,” dryly noted one television program. Another later announced that, “business permeates every aspect of society in the Pacific.” Nothing better exemplifies the trouble Hawaii faces than those two statements. Living in Hawaii is a blessing. To behold the natural beauty and live in harmony with the land—the aina—is a gift we must guarantee for future generations. But it’s also a challenge that might be overwhelming to those of us who live here. Most people don’t appreciate the aina. The beauty of the island is slipping through our hands like the sand we cherish. Daily, the sun rises and sets with full moons blipping across the sky every year yet we measure our lives more by the commas in our bank accounts and amount of goods we can get. The closest many of us get to nature is driving in traffic from our condo to work. Economic demands are great at breaking whatever interconnectedness with the islands we once had. Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change the direction of Hawaii. There are many rivers of thought flowing. They can join together to knock down the dams in our minds and souls to let nature flow in Hawaii and not be determined by tourism and dollar demands. On Maui, there are pockets still preserved. Think of Haleakala, where you walk through sandy deserts, past pyra-

mid-like mounds dotting the crater floor and then through a rainforest where the only sounds are the soft beats of your heart and nature. It is a place where you can hear nothing yet still feel everything. Not long ago I was on Kauai, where I only had one morning to appreciate the aina and spirit of aloha. The end of the island was so beautiful it seemed like the beginning of the world. I stood in awe at the cliffs and watched the thundering surf, remembering a childhood visit and cherishing its raw beauty. I just closed my eyes and let the earth soak into my pores. I saw everything the world could offer. Now contrast that with a visit to Kihei, here on Maui. That’s nothing less than economic apartheid. You have The Visitor Channel lifestyle, but most people’s role is not enjoying the fun in the sun, but holding the fresh fish. Even Kauai isn’t immune to this. There, people constantly interrupted my silent meditation on the island’s beauty by asking if I’d ever seen anything like it before or how standing there certainly beat shoveling snow. As more people asked more questions, I became aware that not a single sole really “lives” in Hawaii. We are not enjoying this splendor, but we are serving and struggling for survival. In short, Hawaii’s residents are prostituting themselves with shameless abandonment. I should have known when I arrived at the airport and saw a woman hanging out the rental car booth screaming with enthusiasm to get commission that the balance of life is beyond measure. Yet there are pockets of resistance on some of the other, smaller islands. On Lanai, it seems everyone still waves and says hello.

And I mean everyone. People engage in conversations to search for common bonds—the talk ends only when those bonds are established. Molokai magic is breathing in the aina. In contrast to the tourist industry world of Kauai—screaming for you to rent whatever it is you want— Molokai has priorities that aren’t based on business. I didn’t get the feeling that they bow to the dollar. But I did sense that getting home on time to the family and being together is more important than securing a car rental. The highlight of my visit was a conversation with two tutu. “Got dictionaries at your high, muckety muck university?” they asked me, referring to Maui Community College, where I teach government and politics. I told them we did. Then they kindly asked me to help them out a bit. “Good,” one said. “Can you erase one word for us on Molokai? Get rid of ‘progress’ for us. We’ve had enough.” MTW
Lawrence Ing is one criminal defense attorney who really puts the “bar” in “bar association.” Famous around Hawaii for the last eight years he’s spent steadily approving commercial and residential zoning changes while sitting on the State Land Commission (see “The Commissioner,” Nov. 27, 2003), Ing is also a fixture at your Maui County Department of Liquor Control. In the last four years, Ing and his law partners Paul Horikawa and David Jorgensen have defended many bars, clubs and stores before the Liquor Control Adjudication Board. Here’s an incomplete list:

The Board threw the book at Henry’s (see this column’s Apr. 1 installment for more on that case) but let Bamboo off comparatively easy. That Bamboo owner Quan Hoang Van was able to walk out of the hearing chamber with just a $1,000 fine and a letter of reprimand after getting nailed in a minor decoy sting—others who violated Rules 08-101-60 and 08-101-61 for serving and failing to card a minor, respectively, have been fined as much as $4,000—was probably due more to his own sincerity and the security procedures he instituted after the incident than anything Ing said on his behalf. “Van is 26 years old,” was how Ing began his defense during the Mar. 4 Adjudication Board hearing. “I met him three years ago… I’ve always found the food and service [at Bamboo] to be good.” Ing then talked about problems Van had at school, his general “lack of experience” and his “wanting to be a friend to all his customers.” Sadly, we could find only one instance where one of Ing’s clients actually walked away with “Not Guilty” stamped on their LC files in the last five years, and that was over two years ago. But considering that Ing will retire from the State Land Use Commission on June 30, we’re hoping he’ll have a lot more time for his liquor license-holding clients. MTW

So what’s the big deal with state wildlife officials getting all hot and bothered over the veiled chameleon? Isn’t it just another in a long series of invasive species that comes over and eats the wrong kind of insects or makes some ridiculous noise that keeps people up at night? Oh my God, the veiled chameleon is here! Run and hide! Just like the coqui frog or the feral chicken. Same old, same old. Big deal. Maui’s got all kinds of animals and plants. Considering that this rock started out as boiling hot lava, doesn’t that mean every species is technically invasive? Just asking. It’s just a matter of when the species decided to move here. Yesterday it was that damned frog from the Caribbean, today it’s the dreaded veiled chameleon from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Nothing whatsoever… what? State biologist Fern Duvall said what? Called the animal “something out of a Japanese dinosaur movie?!” Oh my God, the veiled chameleon is here! Run and hide! I thought we were talking about some tiny lizard that lives in a plant or something. Nobody said anything about a monster that’s hundreds of feet tall and can eat elevated trains or other forms of light rail transport! We’re all gonna die!
Hawaiian Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawananakoa, a woman who does not work in a cafeteria in Philadelphia. The issue at hand now is the little goof the IRS made in processing Roberts’ recent tax return. Because Roberts had used Kawananakoa’s social security number on her tax return, she got slightly more than the $361 refund she was expecting—try $2.1 million. Now our IRS is suing Roberts to get the money back. Clearly, this has gone too far. Do we really want to live in a country where it’s a “crime” to put someone else’s social security number on your own tax return? Can we really call this “The land of the free and home of the brave” if it’s “illegal” to pretend you’re a Hawaiian princess in hopes of snagging tax refunds? Who says only legitimate Hawaiian princesses should cash in on mega tax refunds anyway?… Speaking of legit princesses, Abigail Kawananakoa is an interesting story in herself. First off, her age seems to be in dispute. The AP story on fake Princess Roberts lists Kawananakoa’s age as 73, but a July 22, 1998 Honolulu Star Bulletin story listed her age as 72, which would make her about 78 today. That story, which detailed her running the organization Friends of Iolani Palace, also mentioned her having to file for bankruptcy protection in 1997, somehow allegedly racking up $5 million in debt to the IRS. If true, Princess Kawananakoa has really turned things around.

As if there aren’t enough reasons to hate and fear the Internal Revenue Service, now the Associated Press tells us they’re harassing a fake Hawaiian princess. That would be noted fake Hawaiian Princess Abigail Roberts, a 61-year-old Philly cafeteria worker. Apparently since 1994, Roberts has been trying to convince people she’s actually legitimate heiress and

Reserve Commission approved a five-year plan today, paving the way for one of the largest and most luxurious gambling resorts and casinos west of the MGM Grand. Commissioners say the Blackjack tables in the main casino alone will have… hold on, I might have made a small error. Did I just say they approved a casino? Yeah, that’s not entirely true. Seems they actually approved environmental restoration, which I guess is kind of a casino. Sort of. Okay, they banned any commercial development from taking place on the island. Which is nice, especially considered the island’s recent history as a U.S. Navy bombing target. Instead, they want a complete report on all the island’s historic sites and a plan to get volunteers to extend roads and utilities throughout the island. Still, you know a casino would have really kicked ass.

He then said he will “answer your questions and your concerns. No matter who you are, I will sit down and talk with you.” Then he added, somewhat cryptically: “I’m here for all of the people. Don’t wait too long.”

As if it wasn’t already difficult to pry public records from the hands of public, taxpayerfunded agencies, the state legislature is preparing to vote on a bill that would restrict so-called “vexatious” requests under the State of Hawaii Open Records Act, according to an Associated Press story in today’s Maui News. And by “vexatious,” state lawmakers basically mean people who ask and ask for stuff, then run away when it comes time to pay research and copy fees. This is seriously a problem? So serious that we need an entire law to ban the practice? People don’t make enough open records requests as it is!
SATURDAY, MAY 1 Good news on the gas prices front! For the oil companies, that is! Seems those high prices us working slobs are forking over at the pump are really delivering! ChevronTexaco Corp. just released its first quarter earnings, and they’re through the roof, up a whopping 33 percent! To put that in dollar terms, in the first quarter of 2003, ChevronTexaco earned roughly $1.81 a share, but this quarter the oil giant raked in $2.40 a share. For those watching the oil companies like I have, this news is just the shot in the arm the industry needs, considering how all that Iraqi oil we were promised is still bottled up in Iraq. The news is so huge, it almost brings a tear to my eye. MTW

Catholic Cardinal Gustaaf Joos declared that just five to 10 percent of gays and lesbians are genuinely so and that the rest are “sexual perverts” (Brussels, Belgium, January). And the commissioners of Rhea County, Tenn. (site of the 1925 Scopes “evolution” trial), voted 8-0 to ask the state to help them keep gays and lesbians out of the county, but rescinded the vote two days later amidst heavy criticism (March). And the Georgia House of Representatives voted 160-0 to prohibit piercing of female genitals, even of adult women eager for the procedure. One sponsor, Rep. Bill Heath, when told that some women seek such adornment, was incredulous: “What? I’ve never seen such a thing.” (March).
Corinth, Vt., farmer Chris Weathersbee’s house was raided by state police in February and the 44 most-sickly of his goats were seized, leaving him 70 still residing in the house, which is outfitted for them with hay covering the floors to a height of about 2 feet (and, of course, including manure). Weathersbee, 63, told the Valley News (Lebanon, N.H.) that he personally only started sleeping in the house in January (because of the weather); before that, he had slept in the barn with the goats that couldn’t fit in the house. An educated man with a nimble mind, he denied that he is a hoarder and asked authorities for more time to find a home for his goats, since he believes that any confiscated by the state would surely be killed (or neutered, which he said violates animals’ “right” to procreate).

Dressing for Harmony At a Feng Shui fashion show
How many times have you dressed to fit your mood? Or reached into your closet to find something to wear that makes you feel good? Or put on something from your wardrobe that just wasn’t quite right? It could be that you simply have no fashion sense. More likely—according to two local entrepreneurs—your wardrobe is not sufficiently harmonious. In
other words, it doesn’t have enough Feng Shui. You may already be familiar with the concept of Feng Shui— the ancient Chinese practice of placement to achieve harmony with the environment. The common belief of Feng Shui is that the key to living a balanced life is to reflect the balance of nature in our daily lives by utilizing the concepts of “chi” or life energy and the five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The assumption of Feng Shui is that every object, color, shape and texture in our environment is representative of one or more of these five elements. These are arranged to better your health, wealth and relationships. Generally, this philosophy has been used in interior design and architecture. But what would happen if we incorporated these same principles in fashion? Diane Alba-Means and Kay Fukimoto joined forces—and fortes—to find out. A one-time owner of an interi-

By Samantha Campos clothing line seven years ago. Last weekend, the two hosted a luncheon and style show at the Sandalwood Golf Course. As nearly 100 women dined on Kula greens, Asian Somen Salad, Pasta Penne Salad with Bay Shrimp and Herb vinaigrette, Sprout Salad, Artichoke Heart Salad, finger sandwiches and cookies, Alba-Means gave her presentation, which was followed by a fashion show. Alba-Means displayed slides of colors and the five elements on an overhead projector, as she briefed the ladies on how the basic aspects of Feng Shui related to fashion. She explained how different components in clothing
manifest these elements. According to her, clothing that is blue, black or dark in color, has wavy lines in the pattern or is made of “flowy” fabric, like chiffon, represent the Water element. The element of Wood in fashion includes green coloring, floral designs, vertical stripes, straight shifts and even laulau handbags. Fire incorporates all shades of red, animal print, leather and triangular shapes. Yellow, beige and tan tones, gemstones, squares and checkers in patterns all represent components of the Earth element. The Metal element features gray, white or icy pastel colors, circular shapes and polka dots, and of course, silver jewelry. The ladies took all this in. They finished their greens and finger sandwiches. Then the fashion show began. One by one, models from D International filed out from the back of the Nahele Room, wearing selections from the Weekenders USA Spring/Summer collection.
A model would walk between the round tables on the imaginary runway towards the front of the room, where Alba-Means and Fukimoto were narrating. As the model would stop and pose, Fukimoto would say something like,“Here’s Victoria in a white shell
Thank you Victoria.” Or Fukimoto might say something like, “Here’s Susan in a Herringbone blazer with raspberry sherbet tunic top and buttercup pants with melon interlock belt.” Then Alba-Means would say her Feng Shui bit, and explain that

By Samantha Campos Maui was too hard and that her art “wasn’t translating.” Soon she found a way to translate. “T-shirts!” she said. “My stuff may not be hanging on your wall, but you’ll be wearing it!” A life drawing class she took in college inspired her understanding of body postures and poses, retaining a certain whimsical, exaggerated sense of personality while staying anatomically correct. “All of the girls I draw have a little belly,” said Snodgrass. “Us girls have a love/hate relationship with our bellies but we all have them.” It starts with a sketch in ball-

point pen or pencil. Then Snodgrass scans the image into the computer, cleans it up and makes the lines crisp. The line drawing is then turned into a graphic output to be burned into a silkscreen for the age-old process of hand screen printing. Right now, she’s experimenting with stencil and airbrush, taking it slow. This is her first official year playing with designs she’s sketched over a couple of years. The immediate response to her website and on-the-street fashion has been positive and overwhelming, she said, bringing in emails from Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand and other places around the world. She has even recently acquired an assistant, Steph Vorpahl from Minneapolis. Vorpahl makes the cut-ups and transfers, sometimes using appliqué and other devices to transform big t-shirts into skirts, camisoles, bikini tops and such. “Right now, we’ll keep it small and play with it,” said Snodgrass.

Girls who surf have attitude. They also have laundry to do and boyfriends to deal with. They rip on waves and giggle with their friends. They’re playful, strong, feminine, sassy and sexy. And funny as all hell. Tami Snodgrass knows this and draws it, making a full cotton line of apparel featuring her unique, surfer-girl graphics. A typical design might feature a
surfer girl on the floor of her bedroom, talking on the phone and holding a martini, with her cat curled up in her lap and her short board hanging on the wall. Another popular design features the silhouette of a girl in fishnets leaning against her longboard. One depicts a girl in a bikini top and polka dot skirt carrying her board across the street in front of a car. While Chicks with Sticks apparel does have the requisite “girl in a barrel” sketch or two, Snodgrass says they are “trying to push the envelope.” And she’s learning what works and what doesn’t in this first year of selling her designs in small boutiques and surf shops. One of the first sketches Snodgrass did on a t-shirt showed a girl in her bathroom with a surfboard on the floor. The girl is perched on the toilet and holding a gun, in a dramatic spygirl pose. While the shirts sold well a year ago, the design fell victim to changing times and recent local shootings and was

Catz’s signature embroidery
The world of Tamara Catz The story of fashion designer Tamara Catz could begin in a bunch of places. There’s the Buenos Aires apartment where she grew up. Or the Indonesian embroidery shop where they sew her intricate eyelet pants. There’s always New York, because Catz attended the Fashion Institute of Technology there and, in any case, all fashion designers eventually go to New York for some gala or party
or whatever. Perhaps her own two-story home in Haiku, where her assistants and seamstresses work on one floor and her windsurfer husband and two-year old daughter live on the other. But her story should really begin in Kihei, in a tiny boutique called Sisters & Co. situated near a group of other tiny boutiques and cafes on South Kihei Road. There, Catz’s skirts, shirts and tanks line an entire wall. In
the center of that wall is Linda Lauther, one of the sisters who started Sisters & Co. She is admiring the funky, elaborate netting that cover portions of a pair of Catz pants. “I’d say we get people aged 15 to, oh, the early 70s, looking for Tamara Catz,” she says. “These pants here, I’ve sold these to a couple of elderly ladies.” Normally bubbly, Lauther becomes effusive at the mere
Thongs and Things Yoki Meyer likes to show off the female body The fashion police ain’t got nothin’ on Yoki Meyer. There’s no law against making a woman sexy, and that is what Yoki’s best at. Yet there’s more to the undergarments in her studio than just underwear. All her lingerie is hand-designed and hand-crafted, with luxurious stretch laces and silks combined with the finest micro-fibers. Yoki started Dragonfly Designs 25 years ago, beginning with her hand-painted clothing and hippie clothes. She had her own Paia boutique for a dozen years, but in 1998 decided to devote all her time to designing. “I began seven years ago,

designing my own line of thongs,” she says. “Now that I reflect on it, that first design was really crude. It wouldn’t even go over the knees. I have really finetuned it. Now I have a couple of different styles for the thong.” Her designs are feminine all the way, including the skimpiest of thongs, low-cut camisoles and the sexy, lacy sport bras. “These look good on the body, and make a woman feel sexy,” she says. Sitting in her studio in Makawao, I am surrounded by a sea of stretch lace, bolts of flowing elastic microfibers and waves of silk in hundreds of colors.

mention of Catz’s name. “When I first opened, I thought ‘I hope I can carry Tamara Catz,’” she said. “Really, it’s true. I first saw her Maui Palm t-shirt and fell in love with her stuff. I contacted her. They were so awesome. She’ll even special order stuff for us. She’s so different, yet so beautiful. She’s got a big following already. We get so many calls. I just had a lady call me from, oh, where was she from… Massachusetts! ‘I heard you carry Tamara Catz,’ she said. And she’s never set foot in the store.” Lauther then retrieved a local tourist publication and began
she does is getting to work with women and being creative. “I am never bored matching laces with fabrics, and I work well with women and the female form,” she says. “People have suggested I do a line [of lingerie] for men. A pouchy thong? No way. I like to show off the female body.” Unlike other designers, Yoki is constantly working on her designs, creating and perfecting the patterns and then sewing them herself in her studio. This allows for special and custom orders, as well as control over the quality of the items coming from her studio. She also seems to have a special knack for knowing the hottest craze before it happens. She says color is the inspiration for trends, and staying on top of the in-colors is in her blood. “I think from my experience

flipping through it. She stopped at a Sisters & Co. advertisement, then pointed to a model facing away from the camera, wearing a nearly backless Tamara Catz shirt. “I’ve been yelled at by people because I don’t have this shirt,” Lauther said. “Every day people come in asking for it. One person came in from Ka’anapali. I felt so bad. But we’re getting them in May. “For a lot of people, it will be the special item they buy themselves,” she said. “You’re getting
a wonderful designer but it’s still affordable. The prices range from $68 to hundreds. The handmade uniqueness of it all is worth every penny.” “Sisters & Co. sells my line like crazy,” Catz had told me a couple days before. “Half the boutique is my stuff. If they need stuff they come here.” I had met with Catz at her home, which sits on four oceanview acres in Haiku. As two seamstresses sewed and cut prototypes for the Tamara Catz Spring 2005 line on a table behind us, we sat in large chairs around a coffee table. There were racks and boxes of clothing here and there, and a couple assistants in the front room working on computers. It was a typical Haiku spring day—sunny one moment, then the whole world turns gray as a torrential downpour drenches the landscape, then transforming a couple minutes later into
more bright sunshine. She wore a black tank top with green and purple sequined flowers and a pair of white cotton eyelet drawstring pants she said took the factory seamstress two weeks to embroider. We looked through magazines from all over the world. There was Lithuanian Vogue and a Latin American version of Cosmopolitan. There were a few issues of In Style. “It’s amazing how many phone calls we’ll get off this little corner,” she says in her soft Penelope Cruz voice of a tiny picture of one of her pairs of pants tucked away on page 300 of a recent issue of In Style. Catz is a big name in the fashion industry, but not huge. Her CONTINUED ON PAGE 12
with airbrushing and paints, designing colors that go well together has helped me with color choice for the lingerie,” she says. “I can be on top of the trends of the season, adding my own flair. Right now, it’s all color. Black is out. It’s all hot pink, bright blues.” Some London buyers come into her studio, picking out styles and fabrics to bring back to their British shops and clientele. As they look around, I ask whether the color scene on that side of the world is different. Yoki says she has no problem keeping in tune with whatever part of the world wants her clothes. “In London, they favor the richer tones and small prints on cream or white,” she says. “A lot of people [on Maui] surf, wind surf or kite surf, and they’re in Dragonfly lingerie

There are boutiques all over the world carrying her lines, yet her distribution network remains small. She is international—knits made in Argentina, lighter spring clothes sewed in Indonesia—and flies constantly to Europe and New York, yet she still displays decidedly local Maui influences— sequined flowers and palm imagery, for instance. She has stores in France, Spain, Switzerland and Japan.
“It’s not like a big distribution or anything like that,” she says. “We don’t produce mass quantities, but it’s still a lot of work.” She flipped further through the clip book, coming to the Oct. 2003 issue of Vogue, her first. There is a small photo of one of her $150 pleated skirts. “My signature is the embroidery,” she says. “I never made something like a plain white shirt.” Catz doesn’t use a lot of bright colors, preferring plainer, lighter tones, but does add lots of stitchwork to her clothes. It takes weeks to cut and sew the netting and hundreds of eyelets in a single pair of pants. She said she makes her own fabrics, preferring to work directly on the cotton, silk or sometimes rayon linen. Further on, she showed an image of a reclining Heidi Klum, wearing a Catz shirt that’s been cut away until it’s nothing more than a loose-fitting bikini top. She pointed to various tops and pants, noting the extensive dying and embroidery, all of which had to be done by hand. “That makes it more unique,” she says. “Being on Maui, I have to make a product that stands out somehow. Very elaborate. Every one is different.” Slim and attractive with somewhat curly, shoulder-length brown hair, Catz is, like her husband, a native of Buenos Aires. She grew up in an apartment

with two younger and one older brother. Her father was a pianist and her mother taught philosophy and loved to sew. “If we had a party she’d make her own dress,” Catz told me. “My whole family is very creative with their hands. Getting out of high school I was able to work as a fashion designer. I didn’t question it that much.” Eventually moving to Maui, Catz attended Maui Community College’s Fashion Technology program where she made an immediate impression on the faculty. “She stood out,” says Cheryl Maeda, MCC’s Fashion Technology Program Coordinator. “We knew she was going to make it. You could tell she was going to make it work. Everything about her was based on fashion. She was always talking fashion, thinking fashion. A lot of people talk about making a lot of money and becoming famous, but they don’t have the passion. She had the passion. Usually you find either creative or technical skills in students. She definitely excelled in the design aspect. But that was also her strength. She knew she had to find someone who understood the technical aspect.” Still, a mere four years ago Catz was unknown. She and her husband were living in Sprecklesville, him windsurfing and her making samples and running a small store. Eventually she was able to move her clothing through boutiques in Wailea, Makawao and Kihei. Now she has her Haiku home, her “own lab,” as she calls it. “As soon as we have an idea we do it,” she says. “Then we send it to the factory and they embellish it. I’m usually not that tropical. And I don’t do leather because I’m vegetarian. I try to do the best I can.” I asked her where she gets her ideas. She paused a while before answering. “They just come,” she says.
“[I ask myself] ‘What do I feel like wearing?’ I love clothes. I don’t watch TV. I have internet, but not too much. I have a lot of books. I love art books. I concentrate on art periods or history periods, but not so much. I’m always looking for colors. ‘This looks good, that looks good.’ It could be a leaf or a page in a magazine. I travel a lot—meet a lot of people and see things. I have a great assistant—‘Let’s work together on design.’ I have a great team. I’m constantly thinking of ideas. I’ll rip something from a magazine or take a picture.” She says she pays little attention to other designers. “I don’t look at what others are doing until the line is complete,” she says. “It’s really easy to get influenced. This is a tough business—everybody copies each other. I’m designing for myself. When I start to think about what other people would like, I’m in trouble. Would I really want to wear that? I have to keep things original, fresh, new, changing. Hot! Of course you want something that’s beautiful, but you want something that makes a person feel beautiful. Not just the piece, but how you feel when you wear it. But that’s also commercial. I want things to sell. “For me fashion is a broader concept,” she says. “What you make with it. It’s a larger thing, what you have fun with. How you express yourself. I don’t think that I’m becoming a trend. I’m too modest. I just think that people like my clothes and it makes them look good.” As I got up to leave, we passed a pair of her embroidered eyelet pants, lying on a desk near a computer. Catz picked them up and showed me how they’re damaged, with dozens of eyelets on one leg distorted and elongated. “Every one is different,” Catz says, repeating what she’d told me earlier. “Just not that different.” MTW

It features sexy low-cut bottoms, brazilian-cut bottoms, triangle tops and a scoop top. The bikini bottoms feature tie sides, which add a cute and adjustable look. She also designs a racy line of lingerie wear for some clients— reminiscent of something you might see ‘Lil Kim wear. “I think I did the cut-out dress way before you ever saw it on MTV,” she says. Yoki’s influence on fashion in Maui may remain hidden under

clothing, but that’s not entirely certain. After all, its playfulness mixed with sexiness makes her designs fun. Women want what she has, and her lingerie does the female body good. The ultimate test for any breakfast establishment is its hollandaise sauce. Very few places get this particular item right, if you can find it at all. Who would think that egg, flour and lemon would be so difficult to mix properly? If you are a lover of benedicts, then you know how risky it can be to order them in an unfamiliar place. The pleasant Café del Sol offers several variations on eggs benedict—I had the ham—and I found the dressing perfectly acceptable. It is important to note that the benedicts in this café are available six days a week, while most places offer them during weekend brunch only. Café del Sol is in Makawao, tucked up out-of-the-way and kind of wonderful. Located off Baldwin at the rear of the town courtyard, it’s just a little ways from everywhere and well worth the trip. If the restaurant has a theme, it’s ajumble. The menu offers an eclectic sampling of breakfast and lunch fare, with breakfast options ranging from the traditional eggs and bacon to a Mediterranean frittata with kalamata olives and feta cheese. The food is prepared promptly and perfectly to order. The ingredients are fresh and the service agreeable. The coffee was good and the espresso—they serve Anthony’s—is the best in Makawao. The pairing of ambiance and serviceability is novel, so it’s not too surprising that there are such unique individuals running the place. Owners Tami Ritchey and Lisa Wise met in sunny Key West, Florida, and brought their dreams of becoming successful restaurateurs from that island to this. Culinary school notwithstanding, these are island girls. They fit right in. The pair opened their café two years ago in the space previously occupied by the Courtyard Café. They have created an environment replete with charm and subtlety, a perfect antidote to Maui’s busier side. Ritchey and Wise have made intriguing choices at interior design, which work well to set their café apart from the usual garish and startling norm. The alternating pastels on the walls might easily escape notice, but they resemble art found in nearby galleries. The vaulted ceilings and natural light give it an open, airy atmosphere that is relaxing and inviting. The servers are calm, friendly and polite, and the customers tend to be quiet and satisfied. A pleasant and ever-present breeze makes its way through the courtyard of the collection of shops and galleries that
Kind of wonderful house Café del Sol. The noise level is surprisingly low, even with music playing. Hidden away as it is, it’s easy to suspect the average person doesn’t even know the place exists. The owners said most people find the café through a recommendation or simply stumble upon it through happy circumstance. Clearly, many of those present when I stopped by were repeat customers. Take care to arrive before 10:30 a.m. if you are interested in eggs and such, since the servers won’t take any breakfast orders after 10:45. The lunch menu, like breakfast, is varied and designed to please vegetarians and carnivores alike. Ritchey recommended “the blue plate,” a serving of fresh fish that comes with a Caesar salad and homemade dressing. At $11, it seems a safe bet. But be warned that the afternoon light, diffused by Upcountry weather and the courtyard itself, can be spectacular. It seems that in the land of sunshine, Ritchey and Wise have managed to set the rheostat exactly right. Café del Sol is located at 3620 Baldwin Ave. in Makawai. ‘The Thrill of Freedom’ Celebrating student artists at the MACC The first things you see when you walk in the Schaefer Gallery in the Maui Arts and Cultural Center are a series of three-dimensional, self-portrait cubes. They are made using charcoal, colored pencils and acrylic paint on heavy paper, then hung from the ceiling. They are brightly colored depictions of racecars, hula dancing, surfing, favorite family members and pets. “Each side of the portrait cube represents one quality or idea of the artist,” said Maui-raised artist Kirk Kurokawa, who mentored the artists who created the
Student artist Rachel Melia Romero Hu cubes. “I told them to think about what makes them special and communicate that with their artistic talents.” In defiance of a commonly held belief that kids have little to offer the art world beyond coloring inside the lines, a group of local middle school students created the cubes. They are part of the new “Celebrating the Artist in Us” exhibit at the MACC highlighting the work of students aged nine to 18. This annual show of student work is usually not so polished. But this year, Susannah Browne, the MACC education director, said the center “received a grant specified for gifted and talented children. It was an experiment for our 10th anniversary, to give kids a special opportunity to be recognized.” Interested students throughout Maui County submitted portfolios juried by staff, artists and art teachers. eventually selected 86 students, who then met in small groups outside the classroom that were mentored by a professional artist. The groups met for several different sessions, training in each artist’s particular field. The resulting pieces on display include clay sculptures, woodblocks, paintings, prints and threedimensional installation pieces. Artist Carla Crow worked with elementary through high school students in Hana painting on large woven mats. “Patterns are one thing I know about and can teach kids,” she said. “I didn’t want to dictate their art, so I had them paint a pattern along the border of the mat. On the inside I turned them loose.” High school senior Daniele Comeaux appreciated the fact that she could paint anything she wanted on the inside of her mat. She had two weeks to decide what to paint. She said hanging out with friends inspired her. “I was skateboarding with my friend Pali and it gave me the idea,” said Comeaux. “We were both in Kipahulu going down hills on our boards. It’s something we do a lot. We’re both not very good at it.” But that didn’t keep her from painting a skateboarder on her woven mat, with the words “The Thrill of Freedom” painted above and below the seemingly in-motion figure. She was also inspired in her use of materials. “I just didn’t want to keep painting things, so I decided to use different media,” she said. Then she glued on a pair of old jeans for the skater’s pants. To make the skateboard wheels, she said she “used lauhala leaves, curled them and painted them black.” Other art projects include an installation piece called “The Inside-Out of Art” room where viewers can write on the inside walls. There are also beautiful woodblocks carved by high school students, inspired by passages from the novel Cane. Artist Rik Fitch worked with students to create a collaborative mural. Lanai City oil painter Mike Carroll teamed with three elementary school students. “A lot of times adults are afraid to paint on canvas,” he said. “These kids just dive right in.” Andrew, a visiting 16-year-old student from King Kekaulike High School couldn’t agree more. “Kids are really talented, they’re so much more creative when they’re younger,” he said. “I draw all the time, but I copy ideas from my younger brother.” “Celebrating the Artist in Us” is on display at the MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery until May 16. All This Useless Nubility What makes the Olsen sisters boring? They don’t make teen girl movies any dumber than this dog and pony show starring the Olsen sisters. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are two different-but-thesame rich sisters trying to arrive on time to Ashley’s Oxford scholarship speech competition at Columbia University. Goofy truancy officer Eugene Levy (A Mighty Wind) is hot on Mary-Kate’s school-ditching trail as the girls endeavor to find Ashley’s note-filled dayplanner, and get to a concert where Roxy can pass along her band’s demo CD. The thin plot and fluffy script never support the inadequate eyecandy actresses as they pose against the backdrop of Manhattan as if their presence alone were enough to sustain a movie.

Merchandising, not art, is what’s at stake for the Olsens who have invested in bringing their books, magazines, CDs, dolls, apparel, and host of other products to the public’s attention with a nearly feature-length movie (86 minutes) that’s a prolonged commercial for the two generically charming sisters. There is a huge class of Americans who obsess over the “irresistibly cute twins” and stare with open mouths over lusty questions about their legal availability. The poster for New York Minute speaks volumes about how the duo is cashing in on this phenomenon. In the placard, Eugene Levy stares wildly through the fogged-up window of a subway car where Mary-Kate and Ashley give knowing expressions to the camera. The image discloses a nonspecific teen girl comedy in which you can be sure of as many costume changes as bland pop culture references with nervous middle-aged men contending with their ineffectual natures. If you fall into the film’s target audience (read: female teen) then the message of New York Minute will come across as a gentle nudge to go out and drink some Red Bull so you can have the energy to go clothes shopping for the rest of the week. But audiences falling
For twins, they sure do look alike into any other category will feel displaced by the jarring spectacle of glorified teen models put on dynamic display in an insipid story about the strained relationship between two dim but wealthy-and-cute girls. Jane and Roxy (the Olsen sisters) have drifted apart since the death of their mother when they were 10-years old. Roxy constantly ditches school to play drums with her band, and Jane is an “overachiever” headed for college when a pirated computer chip containing stolen DVDs is planted in one of the girls’ purses. This device fuels one of the film’s nebulous subplots that involves a circuitous chase around Manhattan by a silly gangster, Bennie Bang (Andy Richter), who speaks with such a paltry Chinese accent that you wonder if the actor will even achieve amateur status. Roxy
wants to give her band’s demo to punk band A Simple Plan at their afternoon concert, and Jane wants to talk a free ride for herself to Oxford College. Naturally the girls stay on a recurring collision course with two boys who will become “boyfriends” by the last reel. Director Dennie Gordon (What A Girl Wants) overindulges in music video editing tricks that further fracture the glued-together mise en scene of cinema’s most disposable genre: Hollywood Nubility Merchandising. When Elvis Costello asked, “Are you really only going through the motions?” in his song “Lip Service,” he posed it as a damning rhetorical question at the gathering alliance of fashion advertising and profit-hungry posers to cash in on beauty. The worst things in life are all for sale, the best things are not. Rated PG. 86 mins. MTW

Eddie Kamae is one of those very select individuals lucky enough to be considered a legend in his own time. One of the greatest Hawaiian musicians of the 20th century, Kamae—born in Honolulu in 1927—got himself inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame three years ago. But more than a mere musician, Kamae has taken to producing documentary films on Hawaiian culture and history, hoping to save as many living memories of old Hawaii as possible. This Saturday, Kamae and his band Sons of Hawaii, which has played with various members since 1960, will appear at the MACC at a special luau, followed by a screening of his latest film, also called Sons of Hawaii. My purple prosperity socks aren’t working I’ve come to learn recently that the most interesting people are often the ones who think they are infinitely uninteresting. Case in point, my best friend Amy. Here is a girl in her late ‘20s, who is beautiful inside and out. She is charming, fun, smart and witty. Basically, she’s the daughter my parents always wanted. After earning her degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at some big university, she moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a snowboarding season and then off to Hawaii to pick up surfing. Within just a couple of years, she bought a prime condo on Maui and financed a brand new car all on her own. And then she got herself a fabulous, successful and handsome boyfriend who adores her. She quit her job and purchased an unlimited air pass to the mainland for the year, traveling every other weekend to San Francisco to shop, where she purchased a kickass pair of John Fluevog boots that one day I am going to steal. Then she opened up her own sex toys and lingerie business, hosting private parties that generally involve a lot of chocolate and discussion of the sanitary qualities of glass dildos and such. And when she gets drunk after two glasses of the best wine, wearing her funkiest Hollywood shades at night, she insists that she is “too boring” for even the closest of her friends and adoring boyfriend. So on Friday, Amy and I cruised on down to Kihei for her monthly waxing, after which we met up with Mr. X, another new friend from Washington, bringing the count up to a million and one Washington people I know on Maui. Anyway, after a few minutes of conversing about Amy’s inability to stay up past 10 p.m., Mr. X asked her if she was pregnant. She laughed. I didn’t. “Oh, this is just my ‘boyfriend belly,’” she said, holding her tiny pouch of a stomach. Suddenly annoyed with Mr. X for what I considered blatant disrespect of my friend’s round but unoccupied belly, Amy and I hastily left Kihei. Later that night, I drove to Casanova in Makawao to check out the vocal stylings of Hev B Wyld. The place was none too crowded, which is a shame ‘cause the beats my boy was breakin’ were dope. If I closed my eyes and didn’t look at the lack of people present, it would have felt like I had stumbled upon a secret underground hip-hop party that was old-school cool. I did eventually make it over to Hapa’s in Kihei pretty late to check out the big Hawaiian jam, Dominant Rhythms. Rod Da Fire, Zacc Kekona and band after band kept the dance floor full the rest of the night I was there. The vibe was positive and the music was tight. On Saturday, TBB, BJ and I committed to the two-hour long drive to Kaupo for an infamous Piero Resta party. A pretty tough venture for lazy Lahaina peeps, for sure, but we had to check to see if these notorious shindigs way out in da country were worth it in the future, you know? We walked onto a gorgeous property filled with the most beautiful people I had never seen before on Maui. There was also a pizza oven, replete with chefs grilling up steaks and peppers, pizza and other mouth-watering fare for the munchiferous partying folk. Some band was playing and many happy people were dancing. After poor, sober, surgery-recovering TBB broke up a fight outside and drove our drunk asses home, I woke up to one hellacious hangover. However, after several painstaking hours on the job, I was to make an appearance “as a duty of being a best friend” at a casual gathering hosted by my best friend Amy and her man. When I arrived, no less than 20 of Amy and her boyfriend Randall’s closest friends were sitting at an extended table in the back of the Castaway Café in Honokowai. I noticed that the host and hostess were covered in leis, and people began buzzing about why we were all gathered together. “It’s Randall’s birthday,” said someone. “I think something bigger than Randall’s birthday is going on,” someone else said. I furrowed my brow, peeved that I was kept out of the dark of my best friend’s shenanigans. Randall, beaming, stood up and took Amy’s hand. “Everyone, we have an announcement to make,” he said. There was a palpable tension as we held our breath in bewildered anticipation. “Amy and I are having a baby.” After I picked my jaw up off the floor and congratulated my dear friends on a job well done, I called Mr. X to apologize. Sometimes it’s good to be wrong. MTW
