News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch said Thursday that the media giant will launch a new Fox cable channel by the end of 2004 and is studying additional spinoffs for 2005 and beyond… Other possibilities: weather, reality and Hispanic channels. -Michael McCarthy, USA Today, May 7, 2004

TONIGHT ON THE FOX WEATHER CHANNEL… Totally Outrageous Storms Caught on Tape The action begins in Lawrence, Kansas, where old man Oscar G. “Turbo” Turbeson has managed to videotape a cyclone tearing apart his chicken coop, silo and 1932 Studebaker. Later, some sexy coeds lose more than their tops as Hurricane Eddie slams into a hip Jamaican resort. The episode ends with 17 minutes of raw, unedited footage of drought-plagued Lawton, Oklahoma. All Those Other Weather Shows on TV Suck Except This One A light-hearted, nightly roundtable discussion of the weather world. Tonight, panelist Willard Scott discusses how he used to call the weather when he had hair. Then special guest star Simon Cowell (Star of the Fox hit American Idol) tells why last week’s sudden rainstorm in Spokane was inferior to all the other downpours that hit Washington State this month.

Reality Soup Another installment in America’s newest hit, where a group of former WB Network cast members are stranded in a deserted airport terminal and have to eat a lot of bugs while singing Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” all while attempting to find a mate who may or may

In the latest episode, Daddy Bush calls from the Oval Office, then Barbara gets wasted and starts flirting with an undercover Secret Service agent while Jenna gets caught using her fake ID when, at her mother’s urging, she tries to register to vote.

ON ZORRO!, THE NEW FOX HISPANIC CHANNEL… The Auto Boyz It isn’t easy running the city’s biggest auto detailing shop, but Julio (Paul Rodriguez) does his best. Tonight, the rest of the Boyz throw him a party after he hires a new, female mechanic (special guest star Christina Aguilera). Then everything goes haywire when Julio’s long-lost brother (special guest star Lorenzo Lamas) shows and wants a piece of the action. Salinas, 93962 Tonight’s episode begins with the family still toiling in the sweltering strawberry fields as José finally tells Maria that Juanita’s pregnant. Maria isn’t sure where that leaves her and José, but he promises that he wants to make it work between them. Meanwhile, under the old olive tree, Rosalita tells Pedro that they’re no longer having sex after he says he’s still entered in next week’s big tractor race. Elsewhere, young Amanda Adams—daughter of Jonathan Adams, who owns the local agribusiness concern—drops by the panaderia to see Juanita but is heartbroken to see how hard the single mother of three has to work. Feeling sorry for her friend, Amanda drops a few coins in the near-empty tip jar.

Next time you feel the need to scream at a potential customer for parking in your unmarked loading zone, why don’t you stop and think about what you’re trying to accomplish and what you could lose by acting like a raving lunatic. Even if your overpriced, greasy food is halfway decent, nobody likes to support a jerk. Try adding a little bit of Aloha to your personality. If that isn’t possible, at least post “No Parking” signs and let the signs do the screaming for you.

Indigenous Injustice Why can’t we free Leonard Peltier? While the global community is right now focusing on the American mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq, there is a small room in the United Nations that over the next two weeks will be looking at the world’s treatment of indigenous peoples. And there is one prisoner—#89637-132, housed at the U.S. Federal Penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas—who deserves to have his case examined in detail.

a petition containing 95,000 signatures of law enforcement agents. It was an unprecedented show of political activism by the bureau. From prison, Peltier remains committed to indigenous peoples’ cause for justice. He’s created a scholarship for students, and assists youth from his cell. He’s become a symbol of struggle for self-determination of indigenous peoples around the world. “Although prison life becomes more and

He’s an Ojibwe from the Turtle Mountain reservation in North Dakota. His name is Leonard Peltier, and he believes his people have been fighting terrorism in the name of homeland security since 1492. Peltier’s been in prison for his association with a tragic shooting on June 26, 1975 at the Jumping Bull property that killed two FBI agents and an American Indian Movement (AIM) activist. While many Americans have forgotten Peltier’s case, his cause continues to attract global attention. Many legal scholars and advocates believe his imprisonment is more for being an Indian than his alleged guilt. Peltier and many indigenous youth involved in the AIM were committed to resurrecting indigenous culture and resisting the colonial oppression that took its form in repeated violations of the 371 treaties made between the U.S. Government and indigenous nations. During the 1970s, America was facing tumultuous times, with the government at times resorting to denying the principles of democracy to indigenous peoples. Peltier is a symbol of such subjugation. According to witnesses, defense attorneys and even FBI documents, the details of the shoot-out and Peltier’s subsequent conviction are steeped in controversy. From mysterious deaths of key witnesses like Anna Mae Aquash to the FBI’s veiled threats for favorable testimony, the whole trial and prosecution do not seem to illustrate justice being served. The closest chance for clemency occurred during the Clinton administration, but was quashed after 300 FBI agents marched on the White House with

more difficult with age, my spirit remains unbroken,” wrote Peltier in a recent letter, “and I still dream of rejoining my people in freedom and continuing our work for human rights and justice.” In fact, Peltier continues to do more in prison for humanity than most people accomplish on the outside. From children’s gift drives at Christmas at Pine Ridge to law scholarships for students at New York University, Peltier establishes projects to fit the needs of Native Americans. For instance, he’s assisted rehabili-

tation for prisoners based on traditional cultural practices while also demanding a restructuring of health delivery systems on Indian reservations. He also began a pilot program to document the needs and requirements for delivery and care. This is now known as the Leonard Peltier Health Care Reform Package. Its ultimate intent is to fundamentally alter health care delivery on reservations throughout the U.S. He’s also established a job creation and training program to stimulate Native American business enterprises. He’s also begun a youth entrepreneur program to teach skills to manage economic endeavors balancing culture and commerce. Peltier’s focus on providing opportunities for future generations is made possible through the power of his pen in art. Peltier worked to have prisoners’ artwork displayed around the world in hopes of starting art programs for prisoners, as well as increasing their self-confidence. He donates his artwork to several human rights and social welfare organizations to help them in raising funds. By donating his painting to the Leonard Peltier Charitable Foundation, he was

able to supply computers and educational supplies such as books and encyclopedias to libraries and families on Pine Ridge. He’s been widely recognized for these efforts and has won several human rights awards, including the North Star Frederick Douglas Award, Humanist of the Year Award, and the International Human Rights Prize. Peltier’s life inspires collective action to correct this injustice against one indigenous leader that will be a crime against humanity as long as it persists. We should remember what one author wants us to do when in the face of such an act. “This book is a prayer, a hope, a shout, a flaming arrow shot into the dark night of our collective national dishonor,” wrote Harvey Arden. “We are all and each of us complicit in Leonard’s imprisonment so long as we do not stand up, every one of us and all of us together, this very moment and collectively denounce and oppose and contest in every way possible this over travesty and tragedy of this innocent man’s continuing imprisonment.” MTW

MONDAY, MAY 3 Yup, they finally did it. “They,” of course, are the best and brightest that make up our beloved Hawaii State Legislature. And “it” is, naturally, the act of delaying implementation of the famed gasoline price cap law. Now we all know that it was the Hawaii State Legislature that first passed this law two years ago, but now they’re saying they need an additional 15 months—15 months!—to “develop rules” and so forth. Hmm, whatever happened to that old rule that the legislature is never supposed to do anything stupid during an election year? Or how about the rule that no governing body should enact a controversial law during an election year?… By the way, the non-profit Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI)— made up of representatives from the electrical industry and labor organizations— has declared May to be Electrical Safety Month. This means be extra careful around your electrical appliances and power generators and Tesla Coils or whatever it is that you keep around the home to liven things up. That current’s hot!… Pacific Coast Kayak Company owner Martin Kotz manages to get himself kicked out of yet another hearing on the situation down at Ahihi-Kinau (also called La Perouse Bay). “Everybody here is wrong!” yelled Kotz before community members and state officials had him tossed from tonight’s advisory meeting. “Everything is the opposite of the truth!” Fans of Kotz will recall the outspoken advocate of commercializing the hell out of the delicate and sacred Ahihi-Kinau yelled much the same thing at a Dec. 19 hearing in Kahului before a uniformed security guard gave him the hook.

TUESDAY, MAY 4 At a time when Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa has announced that it will now be accepting junk cars at the Abandoned Vehicle Processing Facility off Mokulele Highway, Maui News reporter Harry Eagar offers his own advice. “Any cars dumped in the deep ocean can be forgotten,” he wrote in today’s News. “With the North Pacific gyre, anything that sinks more than 1,500 feet might as well be on the dark side of the moon as far as further interaction with the surface is concerned.” And unlike the lifeless dark side of the moon, the creatures in the “deep ocean” are cool with us dumping our old Buicks down there? Cool!

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, MAY 5 The Hawaii State Senate may hate so-called “vexatious requesters”—people who make repeated and perfectly legal requests for public records under the State Open Records Act—but the State Legislature doesn’t. Thanks to their doing nothing whatsoever— oh, if all state legislatures were so skilled at that—they succeeded in shelving a bill that would have limited public information to members of the public deemed “vexatious.” This is not the time for Hawaii to follow the anti-democratic leanings of the Bush Administration, which has spent the last three years taking unprecedented steps to limit the public’s access to records and documents the public paid to create and store. If the public wants the records, the public should get the records. Just like if the public wants to go to a public meeting on the proposed commercial use of La Perouse Bay and draw little pictures of proposed toll booths and tell people La Perouse isn’t commercial enough and generally behave all rude and get up in everyone’s grill, he should be able to do that. Well,

OVERHEARD... “THEN WE NEED TO IMPORT SOME NEW CHICKS TO THIS ISLAND. THOSE THAT ARE HERE ARE EITHER TAKEN OR USED UP.” -guy talking to friends on Front Street in Lahaina, May 7

maybe not the rude part—we’ve got to have some laws, I guess.

THURSDAY, MAY 6 Okay, this has got to stop right now. This whole sanctimonious shock anytime an elected official or body of elected officials acts in any way “political” or “partisan.” I’m speaking, naturally, of today’s front page Maui News article headlined “Mayor assails ‘political game.’” The article details how Mayor Alan Arakawa—a pretty cool and collected guy, usually—says the County Council has “gone after” his mayoral office and is under-funding it. “I feel the council is playing a political game that’s going to shortchange the community,” Arakawa told News reporter Ilima Loomis. “I understand they have an election coming up, but I have a county to run.” Whaaaaaat?! Politics among politicians? In an election year, of all times!? I’m shocked—shocked, I tell you! Look, this is what politicians do—they run by

$

49

saying they’re different from all the other politicians out there. They talk about good government and concentrating on the people’s business, and then they go to a big fundraiser at some resort hosted by a big developer who’s got thousands of acres of land he wants to turn into an even bigger resort where officials can talk about how “vexatious” public records requestors are undermining democracy.

FRIDAY, MAY 7 Kent Smith is back. You remember the guy—tried to ram his 254-home project through the Maui County Council last fall. Wanted to build his Pu’unoa Project of socalled “affordable homes”—county planning documents said most of 127 set aside for “working people” would actually be every bit as expensive as the rest of the dwellings being built in these parts—on the southern outskirts of Lahaina. It’s a nice place, really, except for the fact that traffic there going in and out of the town is a snarling mess. Anyway, Smith sent a letter to his bestest supporter Councilman Joseph Pontanilla—which was included on today’s council agenda—asking the council to let him start over and present his “project revisions” at an “update meeting.” The two page letter makes clear that Smith got religion after the council slammed the door in his face when he tried to use the affordable housing excuse to get the state to end-run his project around the usual county requirements of local hearings, environmental impact studies and so forth. Seeing as how him thumbing his nose at the county didn’t get him anything last time, it’s clear Smith now wants to go through all the usual motions. Considering how he’s made the access road from Honoapiilani Road up into the Pu’unoa lands all pretty and paved, we’re figuring he’ll get his way this time… Since this is the week when public records are hot, it’s nice to find out that Maui County’s public records are being stored with great care and attention—and by “great care and attention,” I naturally mean “in the dank, musty basement of the old post office.” “[T]he basement also has a high level of mold spores from damp rooms that caused the county to close off the building,” wrote Maui News reporter Loomis today. Mmmm… mold spores. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD CULTURE IS DEAD In April, choreographer Jenefer Davies Mansfield staged her NASCAR Ballet production at the Roanoke (Va.) Ballet Theatre, featuring 20 colorfully unitardclad dancers, wearing corporate patches of the theater’s sponsors, prancing and leaping around a banked-racetrack stage (to new-age music and the sounds of revving engines), “racing” but occasionally crashing into each other, to be rescued by other dancers who are the “pit crews.” Mansfield was hoping for a big crossover audience of NASCAR fans gathered for a big race in nearby Martinsville. “In this business,” she said, “you’ve got to take chances.”

LAME EXCUSES In Los Angeles in February, Michael Marks, 25, raising an insanity defense to attempted murder, said he was drug-crazed at the time of the crime because someone on a balcony above him had spilled PCP on top of his head and that it must have affected his thinking. He was convicted. And Michael Cammarota, 57, asked a judge in New York City in February not to imprison him for engineering a multi-victim investment fraud but rather to send him to a mental institution because he needs help for his “addiction” to “money.” He got four to 12 years.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES

William Rhode, 53, was arrested in February and charged in several incidents in which he visited daycare centers in the New Jersey towns of Hardyston, Jefferson and Pequannock and inquired about employment, even though he was dressed in pink women’s tights and a large diaper. The first two visits were alarming enough to officials, but police arrived in force after the Holy Spirit School in Pequannock reported that Rhode had relieved himself in front of students.

Serial thief Colin Sadd, 41, pleaded guilty in April in Sheffield, England, to his latest capers, including swiping five cars that he had gotten dealers to let him test drive. As with his previous car thefts, Sadd drove them around, cleaned them up inside, and washed and waxed them before abandoning them. Said his wife, “(H)e desperately needs help with his obsession.” And Debra Janan Goins was charged with theft in February in Mount Carmel, Tenn., after writing three checks taken from a purse she stole, but each time carefully filling in the check register with all the details of the illegal transactions.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX It was a black male police officer who arrested her, and a black female officer who searched her, but drunk-driving suspect Donna Mills, who is a black New York City judge, still played the race card. According to a New York Post report, Mills’ lawyer said that the presence of the black officers meant that Mills’ race-card defense was being undermined, and that that in itself might be evidence of police racism. Mills was acquitted, but in subse-

An Army of Scum Or, we’re looking for a few good homosexual rapists Now it’s official: American troops occupying Iraq have become virtually indistinguishable from the SS. Like the Germans during World War II, they cordon off and bomb civilian villages to retaliate for guerilla attacks on their convoys. Like the blackshirts who terrorized Europe, America’s victims disappear into hellish prisons ruled by sadists and murderers. The U.S. military is short just one item to achieve moral parity with the Nazis: gas chambers. “Numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees” by soldiers, freelance mercenaries and professional torturers under the command of CIA intelligence officers at Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison, according to an internal government report. The detainees, 60 percent of them assumed to be innocent by the Americans themselves, were routinely beaten, sodomized “with a chemical light or broomstick,” urinated upon, tied to electrified wires and threatened with death, stripped and forced to perform homosexual sex acts on each other and U.S. troops. Don’t be fooled by military apologists who insist that these American SS are nothing more than a few bad apples. Seymour Hersh, who has read the army’s internal report, quotes Major General Antonio Taguba as saying that U.S.-committed atrocities are “systemic, endemic throughout the command structure…[The soldier-torturers] were being told what to do and told it was OK.” (the Taguba report is now available at www.msnbc.com) While most soldiers don’t condone torture, all soldiers have been tarnished by it. George W. Bush’s new gulag archipelago, a string of concentration camps, military and INS prisons that span the globe from North Carolina to Iraq to Afghanistan to Guantánamo Bay to New York City, has been designed to give torturers the veil of secrecy they require to carry out their hideous acts as well as the tacit understanding that they won’t be held accountable. The Red Cross, defense lawyers and relatives of the victims, few of whom are charged with a crime, are denied access to the detainees or even the simple confirmation that they’re being held by our government. Some soldiers, like Sergeant Ivan Frederick II, “questioned some of the things I saw,” such as “leaving inmates in their cell with no clothes or in female underpants, handcuffing them to the door.” But when he discussed these abuses with his superiors, he says they brushed him off: “This is how military intelligence wants it done.” As proven by the classic psychological

Ready for interrogation? experiments of the 1950s, people put in a position of total power over another human being find it hard to resist abusing their charges. Prison guards mistreat inmates for a simple reason: they can. Wherever one controls another, sadism is inevitable. However, this tragic truism can be mitigated by creating mechanisms to ensure transparency behind bars. Granting prisoners access to attorneys, journalists and other members of the outside world, unannounced inspections by human rights agencies, recognizing their rights under the Geneva Conventions and rigorous prosecutions of criminal guards can never entirely eliminate abuse, but they’re essential to prisons run by democratic societies. We know about Abu Ghraib only because the inbred psychos who forced nude Iraqi men to pile up in pyramids were dumb enough to snap photographs as mementos of their time liberating the nation from Saddam. It’s like the Rodney King video: cops beat up blacks every day, but there usually isn’t a camera around. The new tone of lawlessness comes all the way from the White House, directed by a commander-in-chief who starts illegal wars without justification, strips captured prisoners of their rights under the Geneva Convention and whose smirky fingers-crossed response to the prisoner abuse scandal—“I shared a deep disgust that those prisoners were treated the way they were treated… Their treatment does not reflect the nature of the American people”— sends a wink and a nudge to our uniformed torturers. Keep it up, boys. Keep those broomsticks busy. MTW

Please no smoking because this hale is highly flammable and some of us don’t want to smell it and especially don’t want to pick up the butts… now this is not a lifestyle judgement [sic] and we definitely still love you even if you do smoke… mahalo nui loa. -Hand-painted sign hanging over the fruit stand at Laulima Farms.

L

aulima Farms was one of the first places I heard about when I got to Maui. “You’ve got to go to that fruit stand,” said some traveler kids from Philadelphia. “They’re the nicest people we’ve hung out with so far on the island.” It was about two months before I had a full weekend to make the long journey through and around Hana to the farms, which are located in Kipahulu. It is an amazing destination on a road that already includes the bamboo forest, Black Sand Beach, the pools of Ohe’o Gulch and Lindbergh’s Grave. Once we got to Kipahulu we found the fruit stand—and Laulima Farms—straight away. You can’t miss it—it’s built onto the back of a brightly painted Nissan pickup that has a bicycle-powered blender mounted in the bed. The whole thing is parked in front of a big hale shading a large picnic table. The fruit stand, hale and surrounding farms are operated by Josh Stearn, 30, and Athena Dietrich, 29. They’ve been co-managing the operation for the last two years, though Stearn and a few other relatives opened the place in 1996 after moving from New York. “It was all guava and cane grass,” said Stearn.

took me on a special tour of their farm. They have several garden plots planted with a variety of leafy greens, onions, root vegetables like taro and sweet potato, beans, eggplant and okra. There were plenty of bees and butterflies flying between the brightly colored flowers, dangerously pointy pineapple plants and fruit trees. Dietrich picked some pods from the ice cream bean tree for us to eat. They tasted even better than cotton candy. Nearby, ducks were roaming around a small pond. “They’re slug-eaters,” Dietrich said. She explained that they planted many hardwood trees for future carpentry projects. In fact, shelters on the land include both conventional and environmentally sustainable buildings—in some, Stearn inlaid complex stone-mosaic floors. There was also a transparent dome donated by a friend where coffee beans were left to dry on a trampoline. Other farm equipment included a small coffee roaster and a sugar cane press from Bali. Dietrich, Stearn and I then sat in their beautiful open-air kitchen, sipping homegrown coffee. “’Laulima’ means ‘many hands’ or ‘hands together’ in Hawaiian,” said Stearn, who grew up on a New Zealand farm. “The farm was started eight years ago by my relatives Rich and Virginia von Wellsheim. They wanted to produce a lot of food for Maui.” Coming from a food co-op background, Rich and Virginia were interested in bringing people closer to their food source. Stearn was simply looking to buy some land after college, and offered to work in exchange for eventually buying part of the property. That’s when they planted the coffee and avoca-

Everyone works two or three days a week at a variety of tasks including weeding, composting, planting, seed-saving, harvesting, drying and roasting coffee and propagating new plants. Currently between five and six acres of Laulima Farms is under cultivation. They’ve been certified organic for several years now, though Stearn and Dietrich don’t think that’s necessary. “It’s more commercial,” said Stearn. “We’re smaller and are more interested in local agriculture, producing food for the community.” Laulima Farms once sold to all the health food stores on Maui. They still sell 1,600 pounds of noni juice to the Hawaiian Herbal Blessings company each month, but in the past six months they’ve focused on their roadside fruit stand. “It costs a lot of money in fuel and wear on the vehicle [to distribute island-wide],” said Stearn. “The ideal would be for people to come out to the farm, meet us and see where the food is grown,” said Dietrich. “If they like it,” added Stearn, “they can buy our stuff, forming a co-op with friends.” Towards the end of my visit, a local farmer and customer who said his name was Ted sat at the picnic table by the fruit stand and talked about the dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)—the so-called “Frankenfoods” altered by scientists. “Hawaii is one of the largest GMO test sites in the country, because it’s the most isolated,” he said. Then he told me Kipahulu is adamant

they still see the larger, global picture. “I’ve been told that agriculture is the number one polluter on the planet,” said Stearn. “Since one of the most important things for us is to eat, it’s a scary thing to think about. And transportation is the second-largest polluter. We shouldn’t be buying things from overseas.” For that reason, Laulima Farms is run almost entirely on alternative energy. They use biodiesel— a natural fuel obtained from used vegetable oil— from the Maui Dump in all their farm vehicles. “I’ve only used 45 gallons of gas in the past two years,” said Stearn. The rest of the farm is run on solar and wind power for the everyday needs of the people who live there. And of course there’s the smoothie contraption, which Stearn said was created by a “local genius” named Alistair who tinkered with the bike for several years before finally giving it to Stearn, who made it work. The Laulima Farms fruit stand also serves as a community education and gathering spot for visitors and local folks who sit at the picnic tables under the hale and talk story. There are books and art supplies on shelves, crafts by local artisans decorate the tables, and flyers and newspaper articles concerning agriculture and sustainability cover nearby bulletin boards. Every Saturday at 2 p.m. there are farm tours available to the public for a $10 suggested donation. “I always wanted to create a demonstration space, to show how

Laulima Farms

It’s more than a bicycle-powered blender “We cleared the land, working about 40 hours a week, and planted papaya and banana orchards. We did the farmers market at the Maui Mall soon after.” Today, they’re able to grow a great deal more. Their fruit stand sells papayas, eight different varieties of bananas, avocados, star fruit, several different kinds of lilikoi, an assortment of other citrus fruits, as well as herbs and roots like kava, ginger, and orange and blue turmeric. You can also pick vegetables from the garden. Everything is organically grown. Prices range generally from about one to four dollars per pound. The café also serves an organic coffee, which you can buy by the half-pound for $20 or a cup for two bucks, in light, medium and dark roasts. They roast small batches each day. “It’s strong but mellow,” said Huelo gardener Rona Couper, who sipped a cup with soy milk during her recent visit. The café also serves smoothies operated by a bike-powered blender, which I just had to hop on and try. For a mere $5, I ended up blending away a sweet, rich blend of the farms’ own bananas and papaya juice. But remember that the ice is harder than it looks. Just pretend you’re riding uphill. After drinking my smoothie, Stearn and Dietrich

do orchards. Two years later, they started vegetable gardens. Dietrich, who said she’d grown up in both Hawaii and Alaska, explained that she’s been comanaging the farm for the last two years as well, with a particular focus on the flowers and vegetable gardens. “I started farming when I was 18,” she said. “After many years of school I didn’t know what to do about environmental and health issues. I looked within and the solution was getting back to necessities, learning how to grow my own food, get clean water and build my own shelter. I got swept away with growing food.” Laulima Farms employs just one other full-time farmer, Kate. She’s been on the farm for three years. There are also six volunteer interns who have committed to living, working and learning on the farm for at least a year each. Matthew is one of the interns. Originally from California’s Bay Area, he’s worked on the farm for a year and a half and considers it a fair work trade as well as a constant learning experience. “We’re out there weeding, sharing thoughts and information,” he told me. “The stand raises awareness with the public, spreading the consciousness of what we’re eating.”

about forming a GMO-free zone, with local farmers meeting together regularly to organize around such vital issues. Laulima Farms has been integral to that process, in both their political commitment and their experience with more organic farming methods. “I like technology,” said Stearn. “You’ve just got to know how to use it… I used to grow more monocrops—just fields of certain crops. But I’m drawn to growing a variety of things.” He said they also used to mow and weed-eat the grass regularly, which took a lot of time, energy and fuel. “I knew there had to be a better way,” said Stearn. So for the past few years they have been planting in a more permaculture style—permanent agriculture—which requires a minimum of human input. They replaced grass with a short ground cover of peanuts that never needs to be mowed and also puts or “fixes” nitrogen into the soil. They planted trees next to vegetables for a natural mulching from fallen leaves. Cultivating plants and trees closer together also uses less water and fertilizer. “The farm is a work in progress,” said Dietrich. Laulima Farms is community-focused, but

to live a different way and how beautiful, peaceful and sustainable life can be,” said Dietrich. “We can create our own energy. If there’s some kind of crisis or natural disaster, we can take care of our own needs. The difference between quality food and mainstream agriculture maybe actually could change the world.” The catch to all this? “We never make money,” said Stearn. “We’re just starting to break even.” But both managers acknowledge that organic

By Danielle Latman farms are often slower to bring in the bucks at first, and are generally compensated later on. “I’d rather make money in other ways,” said Dietrich, who just got her massage therapy license and said she would like to start a small cut-flower business. “It takes the pressure to perform off relying on food for money,” she said. “That can be really hard work.”

Laulima Farms is located one mile north of Ohe’o Gulch on SR 170. It is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. MTW

Ulupalakua Ranch Store Nobody does elk burgers better

The Ulupalakua Ranch Store is located in downtown Ulupalakua, across the street from the Tedeschi Winery and that place where they rent the ATVs. The lunch grill is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day, so eat fast. Call 878-2561 for more information.

the fresh upcountry air. We sat on the porch, at one of the benches near the grill. A large 1923 Maui survey map—showing all the segregated sugar cane plantation camps and rail lines—hung at our backs. It was the kind of spot that lent itself to sublime contemplation. “You always see cardinals in pairs,” said Rudi as a cardinal hopped along the wooden railing near our bench. “What?” I said. “I thought that was myna birds.” “Cardinals.” “So myna birds don’t always travel in pairs?” “What?” It went on like that for a while, until Keawe-Bryan finished our food. Both Rudi’s kalua pig and my elk burger came with a small dab of vinaigrette pasta salad. The elk was wonderful—it tasted like beef, but less so. Keawe-Bryan said she’s worked at the Ranch Store for two years, and lives on a nearby Hawaiian Homestead. “This is pretty much the closest employment,” she said. You can’t miss the place, it being the only old-style general store in the greater Ulupalakua area. If that’s not enough, there are two old guy statues sitting on the front porch and a sign by the road advertising that the store’s been in continuous operation since the Polk Administration. “It’s been open since 1849,” said KeaweBryan. “They used to have barrels of salted meat outside. It was the only store for miles.” Actually, considering the Ranch Store is still the only dining establishment for miles, I guess Ulupalakua hasn’t changed all that much.

I could hardly believe my luck. Rudi and I had been driving for hours, and we still had hours more to go. We were famished, and stopped at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store for lunch. And now, standing inside the rustic general store at the deli counter, I was amazed at my sudden good fortune. “Elk!” I told Rudi with more than a little excitement in my voice. “Dude, they have elk here! An elk burger! I’m all about that elk burger.” “Have you ever had elk?” he asked, somehow retaining his composure. “Nope,” I said. “It’s an adventure. I know what I’m getting—what about you?” “Kalua pig,” he said. “What?” I said, shaking my head. “You can get that anywhere. Dude! They have elk!” I ordered mine medium. Apparently, my reaction to the presence of elk on the menu was common. “Actually, the elk is pretty popular,” said Maile Keawe-Bryan, the young woman who grilled my elk burger and apparently gave no thought to shattering my belief that my lunch selection showed I was smarter and more adventurous than everyone else. “Lots of people order elk. The elk and beef are all raised here, all grass-fed. We try to do local stuff. With the elk, it’s really lean, so we have to mix it with some burger.” An elk burger is a lot like your standard beef burger, but it looks beige when grilling. It comes from the 150 or so head of elk that roam the Ulupalakua Ranch. The Ranch Store serves the burgers about yay thick, with onions and herbs mixed in with the meat. We sat outside while Keawe-Bryan grilled my elk burger, Rudi’s kalua pig and other people’s chicken and regular old beef burgers. It was quiet and cool in

Landscapes of the Heart

Oh Happy Day

Stephanie Clifton’s beautiful symbolism

Quannum artist Lyrics Born is at Hapa’s on Friday!

“The Power of Three” I was first drawn to Stephanie Clifton’s art several months ago when I saw some of her prints at the Village Gallery Contemporary in Lahaina. There was something about her small portrait of a woman with tears coming out of her eyes and flowing around her body that simultaneously soothed and intrigued me. I felt connected to this work, relating to the woman’s pain and emotion. I wondered who this artist was and how she was able to convey such intensity with mellow colors and curving lines. I didn’t have to wait very long to find out. Clifton is a local artist who has lived on the island for two years. At her Apr. 30 art opening, about 30 of her paintings were on display while folk guitarist Brian Debris strummed along in the background. The paintings used a soft, inviting palette of colors. Most featured the female figure as well as natural elements like clouds, trees, the ocean and butterflies, all drawn in round, flowing curves. In her painting “The Power of Three,” a woman with three eyes—the third eye appears in the middle of her forehead—is depicted as becoming a tree, her legs firmly rooted into the ground while her arms are branches with three fishhooks extending from each side. Clifton layers a variety of media in her work, including acrylic paint, transfers, collage, newspapers, old sheet music, leaves, flowers and other found objects. “I

use garbage, really,” she said. Gallery owner Lynn Shue chose Stephanie’s works for her gallery because, “she uses the same materials [as other artists] such as paint, but manipulates them in a different way so they become new and exciting, something that nobody has done.” In Clifton’s “Mandala Fleur,” a square canvas depicts a pink flower in the center, surrounded by a ring of cut-out pictures of flowers. They are bordered by leaf imprints, their veins intricately detailed in green paint. The whole picture is covered in a transparent whitewash. Wanda Russell, whose beautiful watercolor paintings are also on display at Village Gallery Contemporary, said of Clifton’s work, “the more you look, the more you see.” An older man who was clearly interested in Clifton’s symbolism asked her about the fishhooks, a recurring image in her paintings. “Are they about pain?” he asked. “Fish hooks are about awareness and they’re about wisdom,” she said. “They’re about reality. There are always hooks that can catch people, we repeat patterns but we can choose what to hook into.” Then he asked her about the tears—the same tears that drew me to her work months ago. “They’re about the juice of life, the moisture of existence,” she told him. Clifton was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, as one of 10 children born to artistic parents. “I was encouraged to be creative so my mother could have free time to do her own art,” Clifton said. The dark side of her family, which included mental illness and alcoholism, also influenced her. With no formal training, she turned to painting as a way to tell her own story and turn pain into beauty. “Her work is about healing and it’s about process,” said Clifton’s teenage daughter Matty Miller. “It ignites something in people but it’s hard to define it.” After raising her family in upstate New York and living in Taos, New Mexico for eight years, Clifton traveled the country for a year, visiting her children. She moved to Maui in 2002 where she is inspired by the island’s lush natural environment and friendly spirit. “I create images from the landscape of my heart,” she said.

Though you may hear the same three hiphop songs on commercial radio, the world of underground hip-hop is vast and endless. There, hip-hop innovates and exhilarates more by blending beats and insightful lyrics rather than regurgitating the same dance floor hooks and bling-bling boasting. Solesides was an independent Bay Area hip-hop collective that became semi-legendary in the early 1990s, garnering critical acclaim even beyond the world of underground hip-hop. Founding members Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow and Blackalicious then went on to form the record label Quannum Projects, which also features Solesides alum Lateef the Truthspeaker. When Lyrics Born began making his solo debut album, he called upon the skills of his friends, like Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5, Blackalicious’ Gift of Gab and R&B vocalist Joyo Velarde, but produced most of the album himself. Later That Day ultimately is a creatively cathartic work that defies the limits of hip-hop by bringing together deft lyricism, soulful vocals and jazzy funk with undeniable catchiness. We recently talked with Tom Shimura, a.k.a. Lyrics Born, via phone. Maui Time Weekly: Hey Tom, how are you? We really love your record, Later That Day, and see that you were just touring with Blackalicious and the other Quannum artists. How did you get chosen to come to Hawaii? Lyrics Born: I don’t know! I’m just lucky. I’m looking forward to it because it

Stephanie Clifton’s work will be on display at the Village Gallery Contemporary, 180 Dickenson Street, Lahaina, until May 20. The show is free. MTW

seems like not a lot of people get to come to Hawaii [to perform]. How did you come up with the name Lyrics Born? Well, I was “Asia Born” originally. And then one night, I was freestylin’ and “Lyrics Born” just came out somehow. Everyone liked it, so I kept it. How long have you been performing? Since ’86, ‘87—almost half my life now! A really long time. Describe the concept behind your latest album, Later That Day. It’s a really diverse album. I wanted the songs to differ from track to track, but still be cohesive. So the idea is that during the day, from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed, the lighting, your moods, how you think, your emotions—they all change throughout the day. So the album’s cohesion comes from this sense of progression. What are you up to now? I’m working on my next album, Same Shit, Different Day. It’s a remix album of Later That Day that’ll be out in the fall. I did that album by myself and wanted to work with other people again [on the remixes], like Automator, KRS-One, Dilated Peoples, DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel of Blackalicious, Jumbo from the Life Savers. I just wanted to branch out and challenge myself. Love&Light and TooGruvz Productions present Lyrics Born with DJ Twist at Hapa’s in Kihei on Friday, 10 p.m. For more information or tickets, call Request Records at 244-9315 or Hapa’s at 879-9001. FILMCRITIQUE

Sand and Blood Hollywood makes status quo sword-and-sandal epic Hollywood’s historic sword-and-sandal epic genre gathers no fresh momentum in director Wolfgang Petersen’s lukewarm production of David Benioff’s (The 25th Hour) acutely imperfect script. Inspired by Homer’s The Iliad, the 1200 B.C. story straddles a line between history and myth with Brad Pitt portraying the Greek godlike Achilles, the world’s greatest mercenary, interested only in immortality via securing his name in history.

Troy

★★★★★ Paris, prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom), steals Helen, Queen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), away from Spartan King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson) during a peace negotiation, and incites the Trojan War in which Achilles is called upon to lead Greece’s soldiers. Brad Pitt’s impressive mano a mano battle scenes are exquisitely executed, but don’t resonate with thematic license due to lacking subtext in his beefcake characterization of Achilles. The story’s inherent romance and lust are mere set dressings to the impotent spectacle of tame battles and repetitive dialogue. Troy delivers the price of admission in its first battle between dueling warriors. Achilles and an enormous gladiator, who looks strong enough to kill Achilles by just pinching him, face off in front of their respective armies for a decisive fight. When Achilles takes a running start at his gigantic opponent, we soon discover the trick of his trade. With a magnificent sidetwisting leap Achilles plants his sword deep in his enemy’s shoulder blade killing him in a single stroke of well-rehearsed combat precision (created by stunt coordinator Simon Crane). But this singular moment encompasses all that we will learn about Brad Pitt’s egotistic character throughout the movie. This Achilles is a solitary specialist in combat who has refined the art of sword-andshield battle to allow him a rarefied brand of exemption from civilian concerns. At heart, Achilles is a conceited anarchist. There’s no love loss between Achilles and the Mycenaean King Agamemnon (Brian Cox—Hidden Agenda), and their strained relationship does more to inflame the movie than does the doomed love affair between Paris and Helen. Orlando Bloom stands out as Troy’s greatest casting liability. However much Paris is a naïve dog with a loud bark and no ability to bite, Orlando Bloom reduces the role to an effete boy/man disguising his subordinate sexuality and lacking

Beefcake Achilles (Brad Pitt) combat skills with a bluster that is tedious to endure. Bloom brings no depth or surprise to a primary role that brims with possibilities. In fairness, Bloom gets little support from Diane Kruger’s limply sexual Helen. Again the filmmakers forfeit an opportunity to cast an actor capable of bringing layers of behavior and physical attraction to a principal role. For the face that “launched a thousand ships,” Troy needed an exotic and knowing beauty like Eva Green (The Dreamers) to command Helen’s insurgent comeliness. Still, Troy has moments of spectacle that, however reminiscent of the Hollywood epics that your parents adored, capture your imagination. The most notable of these is the fabled Trojan horse enabling the Greeks to invade Troy at the climax of the story. Petersen’s Trojan horse is a ramshackle affair made of ragged pieces of dried wood that you might pay a removal service to transport away. But the strange object’s curiosity factor is tangible, and the moment when Greek soldiers begin crawling out of the monstrosity in the dead of night rings with the mythic proportions of the story. Ironically, it’s Peter O’Toole’s brief performance as Troy’s King Priam that imbues the movie with its most dramatically powerful apex. O’Toole, who knows the epic form far better than most from his memorable work in Lawrence of Arabia and The Last Emperor, steals the movie when King Priam goes to Achilles to beg than he be allowed to bury his son’s body. The pathos of the scene is hairraising and gives a potent glimpse at the overall dramatic potential of the story. Troy is not be the summer blockbuster that audiences have hoped for, but if you go expecting to be bored for most of the movie then you’ll be rewarded with a few fleeting moments of pure dramatic magic. Aloha to Thomas Munroe Rall This is a very hardcore task writing about the passing of Thomas Munroe Rall and leaving it fit to print. The Space Patrol era was the late 60’s thru mid 80’s and the memories of its surviving members are likened to Swiss cheese. What I can safely say is that of all the numerous shenanigans we pulled off, Rall had a key and/or pivotal role in each and every one. Most of which he would manage to lay the blame on someone else thus appearing to be innocent-what a load of crap. Back when I was consistently writing articles for Maui Time, usually about various characters imbedded in Maui history, Rall would have no part of it. He preferred to be low key and behind the scene. This time he has no choice. People lucky enough to have known Tom Rall know how lightly I’m putting this. We called Space Patrol’s original songs the nuclear stockpile. They amounted to about 60 or so written mostly by Rall. Most of it is all forgotten now because we all had the genius presence of mind not to record them. Rall wanted it low key and he got it -@!#?er. You know the Blues Brothers movie when Ackroyd’s talking about getting in the groove and there is no other feeling on earth like it? Oh, how true it is…Tom Rall brought out the best in Tom Hall and visa versa. Some of their guitar harmonies were far beyond chicken skin. More like dog hair. But with Rall gone we can officially bury Space Patrol. We won’t go quietly. On Sat. May 15, please come celebrate Tom Rall’s set off at Stables. It will be pot luck. Bring your own jam session, too. Then we will put a fork in it and call it done. Rall deserves this, so come double barreled full of ammo because fun will be mandatory here. - DABO

“WELCOME TO YOUR NEW ADDICTION”

OPEN 10 AM 7 DAYS TO A WEEK CLOSE

Friday-Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater, MACC Voted Hawaii’s favorite entertainer, Frank De Lima utilizes his own mixed heritage—including Hawaiian, Chinese, English, Spanish, Scottish, Irish and Portuguese—to produce an array of comedic characters in spontaneous song and parody. Here’s an example of one of his favorite Pawdagee jokes he performs, courtesy of a recent interview by Acid Lounge’s Deborah Hall: “Three men are stuck on the 17th floor of a burning building: a Chinese guy, a Filipino, and a Pawdagee. A fire truck races to the scene. All the firemen are big Hawaiians. They step off the truck, and the truck goes up three feet. They pull out a big round net. And the Chinese on the 17th floor yells “Halp! Halp!” And the Hawaiian firemen yell: “Come on Pake, jump!” He jumps and before he hits the net, the Hawaiians pull the net away. SPLAT! And the Hawaiians say, “That’s what you get for changing the prices every two minutes.” (Because in Hawaii—the Jews in New York get teased for being thrifty—in Hawaii the Chinese are the ones.) The Filipino is next. He’s on the 17th floor and yelling “Helup! Helup!” The Hawaiian firemen below yell, “Come on Book, Book, jump. He jumps and again the Hawaiians pull the net away. SPLAT! And the Hawaiians say, “That’s what you get for eating Spot.” (Because in the plantation days, the Filipinos ate dog. They were known for that.) And the Pawdagee guy yells, “Halp! I scared!” And the Hawaiians yell back, “Come on, Pawdagee, jump.” And he yells down, “No way! I saw what you did to the other two guys. No way you goin’ pull the net away from me. Put the net down on the ground.”

International Festival of Canoes Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Banyan Tree in Lahaina Most people think of the International Festival of Canoes, held in Lahaina since 1998, as a big two-week celebration of all things canoe. Well, those people are wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong! Well, kind of. They’re right about the canoes—you’ll never see a greater variety of master builders and artisans from Japan, the Cook Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, the Marshall Islands, Tahiti and our very own Hawaii carving canoes from solid logs. But the Festival is about so much more—island art, history, music, food and hand-carved surfboards, drums and land sleds, for instance. And admission is free. For more information, call 667-9193. BY K. BRADLEY LENZ

ANTIBALAS AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA “LIBERATION AFRO-BEAT VOL. 1” For those of you who don’t habla, “Antibalas” translates literally to “bulletproof,” or more precisely, “anti-bullets.” Remember that moment from The Matrix when KeaNeo stops the bullets midair by saying, “No!”? The sound that is created by this 11-piece orchestra of funk warriors will leave you believing with just that level of intensity. Brewed in hell’s kitchen, NYC, their sound carries that quality of funk you thought had been lost since the ‘70s. However, they just got signed by Ropeadope Records and are touring now, selling out shows around the country, where sweaty souls step to the beat. New, original funk sans turntablist?!? Oh, and restauranteurs, it has a similar flavor to all those Putomayo albums, but with teeth (all the better to chew your food with!). While stepping to the mic briefly, those teeth will be gnashed at fat cat warmongers in the spirit of the greats: Fela, Bob(s). Coincidently, my “keep-it-on-repeat-24/7” pick is titled “N.E.S.T.A.” or “Never Ever Succumb To Authority.” —Ninjatune Records 2001

THE ROOTS “DO YOU WANT MORE?!!!??!” Led fearlessly by Black Thought—who is the finest front man of Philadelphia—The Roots, with a bit of luck and everything to prove in ‘92 (yet didn’t release until ‘95), assembled an album that is truly compacted onto disc. I’ve been listening this CD for at least four years steadily, front to back and am still, “trying to find words to describe the vibe.” While their latest releases are enjoyable, this “organic hip-hop jazz” still has new lines and rhythms (and people yelling in the background) that lets me continue to appreciate this CD time and time again. If that doesn’t convince you, head on down to Charley’s jukebox in Paia and give it a spin. Although you may have to wait for a few hours before it comes on, you probably won’t need quarters, and one of the saloon (arc)angels will take care of you in the meanwhile. —Geffen Records 1995

A TRIBE CALLED QUEST “MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS” When I first arrived on island, working at a fruity little hole of a hostel, a German tourist started talking to me about “heep hop, ja?” “Oh geez” (not O.G.’s), I think, but I’m mopping so any music works at that point. So he put on the Tribe anthology. Anthologies, greatest hits, best of’s—these are just quick $$ scams by the industry, especially when a band has been around for less than 20 years and has a couple new tracks that they can’t make a real album out of. Put that with some hits, remix one or two with some other hot artist and POOF, in come the same amount of profits in half the studio time. Anyway, like all things left out at a hostel, the CD disappeared and no one knew nuthin’. A month later, I saw MC Bratwurst at Mana Foods in Paia, we get to spreken, and he asks me to give him back his CD!!!! So listen, mein freund, Midnight Marauders is the only Tribe CD I own, and you best get over that burnt disc you lost. Get this or Low End Theory if you really want to know what Tribe was about. Bitte, brah! —Jive Records 1993

ROLLING STONES “EXILE ON MAIN STREET” Is Led weighing you down? Bob Dylan becoming too familiar, like that nasally uncle who just can’t keep up with the conversation, yet insists on talking? Or maybe the Hot Rocks that these fellows rolled your way have become lukewarm? Don’t despair, this album will refill your “Loving Cup,” and take you back to the times where Mick and Keith still spoke, drank whiskey and wrote songs together! Sure they were flat-out stealing from American blues artists on half the tracks. But the other tracks where they step out onto their stage—where the Stones were the Stones as no one else could ever be—that is untouchable. Every person that I’ve met who knows this album has something completely different about it that they love, which you can have with 18 tracks. So get the album, a Kentucky single-barrel and a rainy evening becomes damn good times with friends—even if it’s just one friend and his name is Jack Daniels. —Virgin Records 1994

ARIES: Become your own personal company. Do what you can to prevent accidents from happening at home. This weekend features the moon in Aries. There’s still uncharted areas for you to explore. This could be as simple as enjoying a new recipe. TAURUS: Your ultimate renewal hits Tuesday evening with the new moon in Taurus. What you value will be examined and rehearsed. Venus goes retrograde on the 17th till the end of June. Drop expectations of material satisfaction. Learn to love imperfection. GEMINI: When the lights go out the other four senses take over. The new moon asks you to look at your dreams and to pay attention to subconscious urges. Beauty goes backwards as Venus retreats to the loves and creations of the previous week. CANCER: Achievement has to be something more than beating your head against a wall. It takes a lot more guts to work with the disabled or the disadvantaged than it does to shoot another soldier. Make sure that your patriotism includes intelligence. LEO: It’s time for some accountability along with fiscal responsibility. When your career is on the line, do what you do best and perform. Social opportunities continue to come up. The karma of creative purpose needs to be activated. VIRGO: This is the week to go for a mountaintop experience. Whether it’s on daddy’s shoulders or on top of a skyscraper, you need to broaden your horizons. Don’t fear your success. Trust in it. You have friends in high places. LIBRA: Breathe a deep sigh of relief. The weekend looks good for all peaceful negotiations and the best of romantic intentions. Things get deeper and heavier. You’re about to relearn music, law, art and culture. The new moon says to trust and transform. SCORPIO: If I could arrange that all Scorpios had a sensual encounter with a Taurus of comely stature I would do so. Focus on taking your time and having a smooth ride. Risk-taking behavior is not recommended as limitations may slow your movement. SAGITTARIUS: Playtime is your favorite part of the day. This weekend is all about play. Make light of your limitations. Move spontaneously like the red-hot lover you were meant to be. Pray for safety. Move with caution. CAPRICORN: You’re presented with another chance to like yourself. The new moon enhances a loving and playful flow. Accept differences with grace. Keep things calm with your family over the weekend. Do something that makes life worth living. AQUARIUS: Tune in to your inner needs. Honor your parents and older ancestors. The new moon brings dreams and memories into focus. It’s a good time for stargazing. Work becomes more physical. Love becomes more whimsical. PISCES: You just continue to be full of surprises. I’m watching you for personal inspiration. Practice keeping a journal and/or writing poetry. Plan on being a creative smash. Look to your memories and trust your intuition as you drift in another direction. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Ritchie Valens 5/13/41, Billy Martin 5/16/28, Malcolm X 5/19/25 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

If music be the food of love, play on I am old. Okay, I’m not really old but I went to an all ages show on Saturday for the big blowout Khrinj CD-release party, which included a lineup of no less than seven punk, metal and rock bands of varying sub-genres. It was at the Paia Youth & Cultural Center (PYCC), which is pretty much right on the sandy shore of Baldwin Beach, before you get into Paia Town. There were dozens of people in the parking lot milling about, enjoying the suburban joy that we call the Tailgate Party. Yeah, there was the fabulous beachside Paia Bay Café run by Eric and the kids. And tons of peeps scattered on the grass in front of the stage and on the surrounding beach, as “security” volunteers headed by PYCC Director Blaze made sure the whole thing was safe and legit. But of the 200 or so in attendance that day, I was probably one of 10 people who’d managed to reach voting age. Exaggeration? Never mind. It’s what happens when you get old. I was actually in town early but got caught up in envy over at the SandBar by Reeny’s tales of a secret Erykah Badu concert she saw in New Orleans for the Jazz Festival. By the time I got to the PYCC, the first band Left 4 Dead, had just left the stage at the close of their set. A young, sweaty mosher told me that the tenacious punk band didn’t even have mikes, but that “they still rocked!” Then lead singer Kanoa opened the Gomega set with my favorite original they do, “The Walk,” followed by crowd faves—namely, heavier versions of Iz’s “White Sandy Beach” and Rage’s “Killing In the Name Of.” After that, he gave up the mic to Dino, and Nate—formerly of punk band, The Crowd—took over the drums from Hans—of Khrinj—to become Rubber Bands. “Maui’s music scene is so incestuous,” Reeny and I had agreed earlier. The mosh pit resumed with two kids slamming each other and the peripheral people doing the smiling, nodding thing as Dino displayed the manic energy of oh, say… “Have you ever seen Mr. Bungle?” the guy to my right asked. “That guy is so Mike Patton!” Somebody else disagreed and said they were scared by Dino’s wild rantings. I thought it was all so cute and I just wanted to stick him on my dresser like one of those plastic Muppet characters that move when you push the button. After a really long delay due to “technical difficulties,” Khrinj front man Casey announced the next band, Corpsef**ker. All of a sudden, the young crowd went wild and rushed from the parking lot and nearby beach into the grass quad. Even the jumping monkeys on the pickup truck came a runnin’ to the pit. Towards the end of their set, I decided to take a break and satisfy a craving I’d been having for a non-alcoholic ginger beer. But as I walked back from Mana Foods, passing a motorcycle with a yoga mat and a short board strapped to its side—so Paia!—my bag blew out. Bye-bye, ginger beer. It seemed at this point I was ready to join the man in the grass skirt who earlier was urging me to play all Led Zeppelin songs on the jukebox at the SandBar, but was now thrashing about with the rest of the music lovers in the mosh pit. As the godfathers of metal on Maui, Anesthesia, got up to play, the pit aged a little. Yet disturbingly, there remained two young girls who screamed, “Mosh pit or show yer t*ts!” in between songs. Luckily, no one obliged, uh, with the showing of the, uh, tatas. Then lead singer Ian thanked Khrinj for their hospitality and musical greatness and told the crowd to “Buy their CD—you’ll be happy. “Buy their t-shirts, they won’t shrink,” he added. “Buy their stickers, to adorn your cars. You know, when you get ‘em. Buy their lunchboxes, to take to school with you.” After the Khrinj set I asked everyone to sign my yearbook and then went off to the Cafeteria in Makawao to play video games. MTW
