I am writing to you today about your recent calendar item in the April 22, 2004 edition of the Maui Time Weekly. While we appreciate being included in your “This Week’s Picks” column, one of your comments has created some concern from our staff, board members and parents. I wonder if you realize the effect the comment “Be sure not to miss the real show (by ‘real’ I mean, the potential drunken antics and laughter) at the afterevent reception at Mañana Garage in Kahului” has on an organization that focuses on enriching the lives of children. Maui Academy of Performing Arts is an avid supporter of positive programming for youth. In this day and age comments like this could hinder the good we are trying to do in the community. We would appreciate more sensitivity in the future. This year MAPA reached more than 5,000 children in over 200 schools statewide with our VOICES and Professional Performance Programs. We have over 800 students ages three to adult in our dance, drama and music classes. We produce community theatre specifically for families to enjoy together. We are proud of our 30-year tradition of bringing amazing performing arts to Maui County and the State of Hawaii. Better Never than Late
When our soldiers get raped by our soldiers

Don’t these guys have enough enemies? The coverage and concern over the torture of Iraqi prisoners is forcing America to ask how we live with the rest of humanity. But the circumstances surrounding some of our female soldiers should also disturb the nation’s conscience. Too bad only a whisper from American women is breaking the silence surrounding what has become the most dangerous combat zone—a woman’s body. So far, more than 40 women have reported brutal rape and sexual assault at the hands of their fellow American soldiers. While the women are demanding the respect of their basic human dignity, the military continues to camouflage both the criminal atrocities and whatever actions have been taken. Raping fellow Americans is beyond brutality—it is a betrayal to the women who put their lives on the line for the ideals and beliefs we boast to the world. Yet the perpetrators are rarely prosecuted, leaving the survivors to struggle for services, support and an end to the violence against women around the world. One case makes the recent prison photos from Iraq look like fraternity hazing. Marian Hood was raped and sodomized repeatedly by fellow comrades in arms, including her drill sergeant. “They beat and kicked her, fracturing her ribs, right knee, nose, right cheekbone and spine,” reported the Denver Post on Nov. 16, 2003. “They urinated on her, burned her with cigarettes, split her lip and spit on

her, all while threatening to kill her.” It is no wonder this woman refuses to fly the American flag anymore. “The red represents the blood I’ve shed,” she said recently. “The blue represents my bruises—the way my face looked. I was beaten and raped for my country. That should be enough.” Faren Jones is another woman who came forward. But she received more jeers than justice. At the hearing she was asked, “What clothes did you wear? Did you brush your breasts against them?” The men implicated received only verbal warnings. “They got nothing,” she said later. “I got destroyed.” Clearly, rape in the military isn’t front-page news. As a result, many women believe they are alone. Susan Armenta was sexually assaulted by her supervisor. He left saying, “Thank you. You just made my day.” “You have to report it [sexual assault and rape] to a man,” said one soldier, Paula Glover, “who talks to a man, who gives it to a man, to make the decision.” Another victim said simply, “There I am, all bruised up and beaten, and somebody in my chain of command wanted me to take a [polygraph] test.” Never again should our women soldiers be exposed to rape and assault while serving overseas. At Camp Udari, 15 minutes from the Iraqi border, a 23-year-old officer explained an act beyond belief committed by a male counterpart.

After finishing guard duty at 2:30 a.m. she was hit on the back of her head and knocked unconscious. She woke up blindfolded and in the process of being raped. Her assailant stuffed her underwear in her mouth and tied her hands with cord. She was cut as the man sliced off her clothes. She fought back but was told he would cut open her crotch. When she ignored his threat, he knocked her unconscious. She eventually woke and ran back to base bruised, beaten and naked. The culture of violence we are training our soldiers and society to embrace is a dangerous direction for the nation. There is a war against women and we must put an end to it. Clearly, the rape cases deserve the attention of the world as much as the torture moments in the war. The military must fulfill its duty to prevent assault, protect victims and hold attackers accountable. But after returning from war duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, many women service members seeking sexual trauma counseling and other assistance are finding little military help, and are increasingly turning to civilian rape crisis organizations. From the enlisted ranks to officers, women returning home are beginning to complain about poor medical treatment, a lack of counseling and threats of punishment for reporting assaults. The 60,000 women serving in our so-called “War on Terror” at least deserve to be terror free from their fellow soldiers. Yet today the only newspaper reporting this betrayal in any kind of depth is the Denver Post. This must change. MTW

REPORT This one’s really straight forward—Isaacs came, saw two guys at the bar drinking an Amstel Light and Guinness, then looked at his watch. Case closed. Law says you close at 2 a.m., you close at 2 a.m. Except in this case, when it seems that seven-year Maui Lobster Cove bartender Celeste Gemberling seems to have thought it wasn’t 2 a.m. (at the time of the incident, Gemberling’s last name was Isaacs, but she’s not related to LC Officer Isaacs). Anyway, at the May 6 LC Adjudication Board hearing, Gemberling explained that her watch was 20 minutes slow. “I had just checked my watch and it said it was 1:50,” she told the Board. “And then Mr. Isaacs walked in and… he showed me the time. I was surprised to see that it was after two.” Board member M. D. Alborano then asked owner Jean Motheau if he learned his lesson and purchased a clock. Motheau chuckled and said yeah, he had. That made the whole board chuckle. Then they fined him $2,000, though they suspended half that amount if he can keep the time straight for the next year. MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, MAY 10 Working to shore up his left flank in this 2004 election year, our Democratic Congressman Ed Case has decided to sign onto proposed legislation that would finally, at long last, start banning cruise ships from dumping sewage, wastewater, dishwater, oil sludge and other such toxics into U.S. territorial waters. “Especially for Hawaii, this will ensure enhanced protection of our precious ocean, and help us fight the scourge of aquatic invasive species threatening our local marine wildlife,” said Case in a news release. Scourge? Aquatic invasive species? Huh? The danger is monster ships disgorging tens of thousands of tons of sewage into our waters (as well as releasing all kinds of toxics into the air and harboring quasi-colonial labor practices, but who’s counting?) “I also believe it will be beneficial to the companies in and entering Hawaii’s cruise industry in ensuring public confidence in their environmental practices,” said Case, “and I’m hopeful that they will be supportive.” Hmm: Big-time government regulation that will make substantial environmental progress or keep signing meaningless memoranda of understanding that the industry can blow off… oh yeah, the cruise ship companies and our “Big Business isn’t big enough” Congress will get behind this one.
TUESDAY, MAY 11 Providence, Rhode Island-based Textron has gotten another big Pentagon contract, this one for $49.9 million to spend five more years testing lasers on Maui. A Fortune 500 company that dates back to 1923, Textron is a massive, diversified corporation that rakes in $10 billion a year and employs 64,000 people. Its many subsidiaries make everything from single-engine civil aircraft

(Cessna) to industrial fuel pumps (Textron Field & Power) to financial advice (Textron Financial) to golf carts (E-Z-Go). Textron subsidiary Bell is one of the world’s most popular suppliers of helicopter gunships, and has sold new or refurbished Huey birds to customers like Argentina, Bahrain, Colombia, Ghana, Greece, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Latvia, Mexico, Oman, South Korea, Taiwan and Uraguay. The best thing is that some of those nations—Colombia and Mexico, for instance—even have bloody civil wars so they can really put those eggbeaters through their paces! Since 1993, the company’s subsidiary Textron Systems Maui in Kihei has been developing lasers and sensors to “illuminate” things like orbiting satellites and boat harbors. In fact, a series of U.S. Air Force/Textron “Standoff Intelligence Detector Flight Tests” involving a laser-equipped De Havilland Twin Otter flying back and forth over Kihei are still ongoing. Woohoo!

And for the second year in a row, MISC is giving away an award to “recognize efforts to keep invasive plants out of Maui County.” Sample efforts include “not using invasive plants” and “efforts to reduce use of invasives by others” (read: informing). That is so cool, I’m going to enter. I’m a shoein: I’ve decided that I won’t ever start a big-time illegal invasive plant smuggling operation out of my garage. Of course, the reason for this has more to do with me not having access to a garage to conceal my band of smugglers than any desire to keep invasive plants out of Maui, but I don’t see how that’s relevant to the contest at hand. Anyway, MISC can send any big cash award to me, care of this paper.
FRIDAY, MAY 14 WEDNESDAY, MAY 12 Kimo’s come home! This weekend former Maui County mayor James “Kimo” Apana got himself elected Maui County Democratic Party chairman. This is hardly surprising—the Party didn’t cut him a $25,000 check during the 2002 mayoral campaign for nothing. Not that it did him any good, losing to Maui County Councilman Alan Arakawa like he did, but that’s all in the past now. The distant past. I mean, guys lose mayor elections all the time, right? Guy gets all amped on hundreds of thousands of dollars over the last decade just rolling in, then he loses. Sure, it’s anti-climatic. Sure, you’re going to be stunned. But now Kimo’s back, in his new Democratic Party Boss role. Of course, what happens next is anybody’s guess. I mean, Apana didn’t do a damn thing during the four years he was mayor—if you go by the complete lack of records Arakawa’s people found when they came into office.

THURSDAY, MAY 13 It isn’t every day we get a breathless, imperative press release marked “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE” and “Photos Available Upon Request.” Then again, it isn’t every day that we hear from the all-powerful Hawaii Lumber Products Association (HLPA). “Lumber, as the only true renewable building material, provides benefits to the environment, produces sound construction economies, creates architectural flexibility and meets the highest structural engineering standards,” stated the release, which was headlined “The Truth about Lumber.” Now I can argue with some of the finer points of that statement—“only true renewable building material?!” Whatever happened to that artificial concrete I keep reading about?—but damn, people, you’ve got to let up on lumber once in a while. Lumber’s only doing its job. Don’t you know that “wood homes and buildings are among the oldest standing structures built by man?” Or that “Ninety percent of all homes in the U.S. and
There’s another lawsuit against Maui County for wrongful death. Family of Lisa Tomita Kaina filed papers alleging that Maui police officers used “absolutely excessive force” when they shot and killed the 27-year-old Pukalani woman on Jan. 23. The shooting, which occurred on crowded Baldwin Ave., came after a high-speed chase spurred by Kaina allegedly stealing a white 2004 Cadillac from a Kahului car lot. According to police statements, two officers fired one shot apiece at Kaina, one of which struck her in the left temple, killing her instantly. Maui police chief Tom Phillips has said officers opened fired because she was trying to injure or kill them—a contention Kaina family attorney David Gierlach says is “absolutely not” true. “There’s no way this girl should have been shot under the circumstances of this case,” Gierlach told Maui News reporter Lila Fujimoto. “It was an overreaction.” Meanwhile, the Gregory family’s lawsuit against the county for the death of Pukalani resident Richard Gregory nearly two years ago continues to move ahead. In that case, Gregory died while struggling with three Maui police officers who were trying to arrest him after he began acting strangely in a Lahaina music studio… In completely unrelated news, two off-duty Maui police officers shot at two men who were allegedly shooting at them at Kihei’s Kalama Park. Two men were later arrested. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD POLITICIANS ON THE HIGH ROAD In Louisville, Ky., local Republican Party activists John Lowler and Peter Hayes feuded recently over their status at the upcoming state convention, with Lowler alleging that Hayes punched him. Lowler had first accused Hayes of smearing him by suggesting that he had recently had gay sex. (Lowler acknowledges that he used to be gay but says he is now straight). Hayes said it was Lowler who smeared first by denigrating Hayes’ religion, the Unification Church (headed by Rev. Sun Myung Moon). Hayes told the Louisville Courier-Journal in April that Lowler had taunted him by saying, “Moonie, Moonie, Moonie, Moonie, Moonie.” In his defense, Lowler said he could recall saying only “Moonie, Moonie, Moonie.”
LEAST COMPETENT HUMAN Lawyer Larry Feingold, 53, testified at his January trial in New York City that he was merely trying to commit suicide in 2003 when he turned on the gas in his apartment and that the subsequent blast that devastated three floors of his building caught him by surprise because he didn’t know that gas could explode. “I thought gasoline did,” he said, under oath, “but I didn’t know about gas.”
HOME REMEDY From a November 2003 article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association on the fatal transmission of Rocky Mountain spotted fever from two dogs to their owner: “One man in Mississippi contracted Rocky Mountain spotted fever when he killed ticks he had removed from his dog by biting them with his teeth. This may seem unusual,” the

veterinarian-authors wrote, “but we have since encountered other persons who claimed to kill ticks by biting them.”
ANOTHER CROSS TO BEAR A 23-year-old man in Hartland, Maine, was hospitalized in March after apparently attempting to commit suicide by crucifying himself. According to an account in the Portland Press Herald, he built a wooden cross, placed it on the floor, and nailed one hand to it. According to the officer, “When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911,” although the officer said he wasn’t sure if the call was for an ambulance or for someone to come help him nail the other hand.

WEIRD SCIENCE News of additional bizarre species was released recently from last year’s deep-sea research voyage by scientists from Australia and New Zealand (and reported in News of the Weird in October). The oddest this time was the “deep sea angler fish,” because of its sex life. According to Dr. Mark Norman, curator at Museum Victoria in Australia: “The female is the size of a tennis ball. It has big savage teeth” and “a rod lure off the top of its head with a glowing tip to coax in stupid prey.” The male “looks like a black jellybean with fins.” The mating male bites into the female’s side, drinks her blood and gives her sperm. Their flesh eventually fuse together permanently. Said Norman, “They have found females with up to six males attached.”

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK
I’m standing with Jerry Kunitomo at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. It’s late afternoon, but the sun is still high in the sky. On the beach a few yards away, some people are burying a local guy up to his neck. The air is thick with humidity, sawdust and the unmistakable growl of chainsaws slicing through fresh wood. It’s May 15, the third day of the International Festival of Canoes. Giant Albicia logs from the Puna forest on Hawaii, hauled in just a couple days before, are in various stages of completion. While the old ways typically demanded Koa, that hardwood is in short supply today and much too difficult to work in the festival’s two-week time period. Some of the canoe hulls have reached the point of sanding, while others are still being hacked with axes. Near where Kunitomo and I are standing, a carver from the Marshall Islands is shaving the hull of one canoe with a chainsaw as though he was whittling. “I could never do that,” Kunitomo says. “I’d spend three days just sanding it down!” Dressed in an Aloha shirt and black slacks, Kunitomo runs BJ’s Pizza in Lahaina. He’s also spent the last seven years, through the Lahaina Town Action Committee, serving as one of the principle festival organizers. Master carvers from all over the world—Tonga, the Marshall Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand and, for the first time, the Japanese island of Hokkaido—are here, using modern tools to create examples of the ancient boats that linked Polynesia with Hawaii centuries ago. “This is really a community-based project that has international interest,” he tells me. “It’s really significant for Lahaina. It’s needed to create a cultural background to what I call ‘erosion to progress.’ We need to
implant in the state and county… a cultural component that has to be considered. If we could sell Girl Scout cookies to fund this, we would.” We walk a few yards around the carving area, then spend a moment watching some Lahainaluna High students carefully negotiating a saw along a jig. “You’re not going to see them chop away because their shop teacher would be sued,” says Kunitomo. “That’s why you see a lot more jigs going on.” Once committed to a log, the carving teams have no choice but to make the best of it. Solving problems in the past has meant everything from cutting small patches to cover over knots and cracks to removing a beehive gorged with enough beeswax to fill a trashcan from a hollow in the log that only became visible when the hull was halfway completed. “Part of being great is being able to overcome problems,” says Kunitomo. Then we both become distracted watching a New Zealand master carver carefully walk across one canoe hull, holding onto a tree branch above his head for balance while guiding a large chainsaw with his other hand. According to Kunitomo, the event costs about $200,000 to put on, and relies heavily on donations from local businesses. In exchange, they will get the completed canoes. Saturday, May 29 is the Ceremonial Launching at Kamehameha Iki Park, which is kind of the point to the whole two weeks’ worth of work. “These trees, these living beings, gave their lives for a purpose,” says Kunitomo of the whole event. “[May 29] is really a birthing ceremony. The canoes are lined up. There’s an umbilical cord tied to the canoe. The protocol is to cut the cord and create life. When they go into the water, they’ll be at the surfbreak in 30 seconds. And when it rides the surf back in, it really looks like something’s come to life. And people who just got off the plane and don’t know a damn thing that’s going on will be crying.” MTW

Moms Or, what happens when you mix two women, seven children, ice and prison Cheryle and Tania make the mile-long walk every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. They walk twice, actually—first at 3:30 p.m. and then again at 6 p.m. They walk alone, forbidden from stopping or talking to anyone on the way. Bad things happen if it takes them more than 30 minutes to get to their destination. The rules and restrictions facing Cheryle and Tania are due more to where they’re walking from than where they’re headed. That’s because Cheryle and Tania are inmates at Maui Community Correctional Center. Both women, who asked that only their first names appear in this article, are single mothers. Cheryle has four children while Tania has three. They’re both in their early 30s and in the middle of five-year prison terms for ice use. They’re also part of a new Drug Court program called Track Five that allows them to walk or ride a bike out of prison four days a week to get counseling and treatment at the Cameron Center. Once there, the women and about a half dozen other inmates talk about social behavior, critical thinking, thoughts, feelings, urges, co-dependency and self-esteem. “I’ve pretty much accepted that I’m [in prison],” said Cheryle. “The first couple days [in Track Five] I felt crappy. Why are we here? But now I’m okay with that. Sometimes it’s crazy— we get here, and we want to go back.” “At first, we were scared to even leave,” said Tania. “We’ve been inside a while.” Both Cheryle and Tania said they’ve seen family members drive by and stop while they’re headed to the Cameron Center. In those cases, the women had to ignore them. “You have to do the right thing, even when nobody’s looking,” said Tania. Cheryle agreed. “It can get overwhelming,” she said. According to MCCC Acting Warden Alan Nouchi, there are a couple reasons behind allowing inmates to walk in and out of prison. “It’s not feasible for us to run a shuttle service,” he said. “If they can walk or peddle their way, it will give us an idea as to the trust factor. We set the time to go and come back. Their custody level enables them to go on their own.”

They are monitored on their journey, Nouchi said, though not one-to-one. But the acting warden did say that one Track Five inmate attempted to ride off the route to meet his girlfriend for “hanky panky.” A roving guard caught him almost immediately. His attempt landed him back in lockdown. Track Five has been in existence for just a little over three months. There’s currently room at MCCC for 24 males and a dozen females to participate in the program, and they live in Dorms III and V, respectively. It is unprecedented in the State of Hawaii. “It’s part of our holistic approach,” said Drug Court Administrator Barbara-Ann Keller. “We’re rebuilding their lives.” Cheryle and Tania have been in the program for 60 days, but they’re uncertain when they’ll finish and be able to transfer into work furlough. Both professed gratitude for getting the chance to clean up their lives. “If they just let us out on parole, I would end up using again,” said Tania. “At last we can look at the consequences we face. We are able to function when clean.”
I visited Cheryle and Tania at the Cameron Center a couple weeks ago. Sitting in a classroom with tables arranged in a square and pale green walls, they wore not orange scrubs but the privileged jeans and t-shirts that come with good behavior. Each woman had been through Drug Court before, but had failed—“relapsed” was how they put it. That’s the trade-off for agreeing to Drug Court in the first place: successfully complete many months of rigorous counseling and treat-
By Anthony Pignataro ment or go to jail. Before she got into trouble, Cheryle was a nursing student. Now’s she’s a convicted felon with two years in MCCC under her belt. In 1999, she was arrested for stealing “clothes, lots and lots of clothes from Sears.” She got five years probation. But while on probation, she said she came up with a “dirty UA”— a urine analysis that showed the presence of crystal methamphetamine. “I started using at a late age,” she said. “At 28, when my relationship of 10 years fell apart. I never did anything before. As soon as I took my first hit, the pain was no longer there. I wanted to smoke, I wanted to do it. I lost all sense of self, responsibility.” They were going to revoke her probation and send her to jail, but first she opted to join Impact, the forerunner of Maui Drug Court.
“The first time I got into recovery, my kids were taken away and I thought I had to stop,” said Cheryle. “I was clean for a year. Everything was good, everything was fine. As soon as I got them back I relapsed. I got into a relationship with another drug court client. I broke a rule. But I also ended up using. It was an unhealthy relationship. I didn’t want to be alone. I believed at the time that I loved him, even if it meant going to jail. Now that I think about it, it’s crazy. I don’t want to make excuses. Having my kids back was overwhelming, having to raise them on your own.” Cheryle said she knew she was going to jail, so she kept smoking Ice all the way to her day in court. Now that she’s in prison, getting treatment for her drug addiction, she says she wants to get back to nursing after her release. By comparison, Tania’s only been in MCCC for 13 months. But her story is very similar— arrested for possession of Ice in 1999, she’s also a former Drug Court drop-out. “I was offered to do treatment instead of jail,” she said. This was in 2001. “I was hanging out with people I was not supposed to hang out with. Was using and selling drugs. Then I got sanctioned by Drug Court. Somebody told on me. I was sent to MCCC. “Had the opportunity to go to Pasadena, to Impact for residential treatment. I stayed there 90 days. Then I came home, got into trouble again, hanging with people who were using and selling. Then I decided not to go to my court hearing. I was scared. I wasn’t ready to go back to jail.” She was “on the run” for a few weeks before tiring of “looking over my shoulder. So I packed my bags and went to jail.” Before she got into trouble, she was selfemployed, cleaning people’s homes. She said she would like to go back to that.
and Headstart. They arrived at the MEO offices near the Cameron Center at 3:30 in a big yellow school bus, the only Track Five participants in the group of 24 mothers. In fact, Cheryle and Tania were the first ones off the bus and in Classroom Two. Cheryle found her daughters immediately, but Tania hunted around a bit before finding her child that was able to attend. Meanwhile, six guards in civilian clothes deployed to the room’s four corners. Acting Warden Nouchi, who came in a few minutes earlier, explained that the guards all volunteered for this duty. “But I will pay them anyway,” he told me. “I have to.” The women and children scattered around the room, decorated for Cinco de Mayo but filled with Hawaiian guitar music from two guys playing up front. Many children played off
staffers and reporters. “It reminds us of when they were babies. Each child is like a rainbow.” When the women were finished, they walked out and handed the cards, usually decorated around the theme “I love you,” to their children. Not long after, and standing off to the side, MEO Special Projects Director Tom BlackburnRodriguez pointed to one mother in a gray long-sleeve shirt and jeans. “She used to work for us,” he said. “Now she’s got a job at an auto detailing shop. After a month she got a raise. She’s out in 30 days.” We talked briefly about the novelty of having such a visitation event. “Have you see the line at MCCC on the weekends?” he asked. “People standing out in the sun for hours, waiting. It wears you down. Pretty soon their visits are less regular.” Across the room, Drug Court Administrator Keller was watching one mother and daughter. “Look at that poor girl,” she said, referring to one crying girl being comforted by her mother. “She’s been crying the whole time.” It was a little after five, shortly after the children busted open a couple piñatas, that the event came to a close. As the guitarists played “Somewhere over the rainbow,” the inmates began collecting their souvenir photos and roses and cards in preparation for getting back on the bus to MCCC. One woman cradled her baby—there were about half a dozen there that day—for a few moments, then handed the child to a staffer before taking her things and leaving. In the confusion, one over-worked staffer handed Keller a crying infant. Tania, in the center of the room, spent her last few moments talking with her daughter. Cheryle then came over, and the both got their things. Neither was crying as they left the room. But as they got on the bus, Cheryle rushed back inside to retrieve a sweatshirt she’d accidentally left behind. In an act of stunning symmetry that could only have been an accident, the song ended exactly as the last mother left the room and went back to prison. MTW

to the side, at games on the floor. Two boys played a game of oversized checkers while their mother sat cross-legged next to them, watching intently. While some kids and mothers went to the craft tables, Tania and her daughter sat at a table near the center of the room, talking. I walked over and said hello, and Tania introduced me to her daughter. A few minutes later one of the Headstart volunteers read a prayer. Tania and her daughter stood and listened. Tania put her left arm around her daughter’s shoulder, which wasn’t easy considering her daughter is a few inches taller than her.
At 4 p.m., nine of the inmates lined up near the two guitar players and danced the hula. Cheryle, one of the more experienced mothers, was up front, while rookie Tania danced in the back row. A large card colored with crayons sat directly in front of each of them. “A lullaby was selected,” Cheryle told the crowd of inmates, children, guards, MEO

close to freedom, but they are still inmates. Though listening to the women talk, you’d almost think prison wasn’t so bad. Sure, when you first go in you’re stuck on an empty floor, 24-7. All you see are four walls, your bunk, toilet and sink. But their good behavior has bought them access to Dorm V, where they enjoy privileges like not having to wear bright orange scrubs. They can also stay up until 2:30 in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays watching TV. Both are enrolled in pre-employment courses, as well as Hula Halau participants. In fact, on May 1 they danced at the Queen Ka’ahumunu shopping center in Kahului. Of course, the same “can’t talk with the other people” restrictions applied, but they did get to dance the hula in public. That being said, prison also means that they have very little contact with their children. And they have a lot of children. Cheryle has four children—two boys, ages 13 and 11, and two girls, ages nine and five. Of them, Cheryle said the boys are living in Las Vegas with their father. Tania has two daughters, 15 and 14, who live in Lahaina with her mother and one 13-year-old son living in Arizona. But on May 5—a week after I interviewed them—Cheryle and Tania got to spend two hours eating and playing with at least some of their children as part of a Mothers Day event sponsored by Maui Economic Opportunity

While still searching for that elusive Maui niche for their sushi business, Sam and Sheila Sohn have set up shop inside Kahului’s Wow-Wee Maui Café. Their cute island style sushi bar is a blast and their personal attention to your satisfaction exclusive. But this isn’t any ordinary sushi bar. It’s always refreshing to find Japanese food that breaks the mold, and Sam’s certainly comes through. Most sushi restaurants present the diner with an almost dogmatic interpretation of the recipes, but Sam’s creative take on the familiar stand-bys puts a new twist on all your favorite sushi. Sam’s Sushi in Wow-Wee Café sits perched on a busy Kahului corner at Dairy Road and Alamaha. But once tucked away inside its cozy confines, you will forget all the traffic and hub-bub outside. Its cool demeanor, tall ceilings and yummy smells will soon whisk you away into a sushi haven you never thought possible on this busy avenue. While Sam covers all the bases with take-out and catering, his real talents shine when you sit at the sushi bar. That’s where he’s able to use his fast-lane, bigcity experiences in stories as well as the beautiful, creative interpretations he places on your plate. Sam is always reinventing the roll, fine-tuning its presentation with his delicious sauces and new ingredients. Every time I visit the shop I get his Dynamite. It is full of chunks of seafood baked in the aioli-inspired savory sauce. Yet every time I order it he’s dreamed up some new angle for serving it. Once it was on a bed of mixed Kula greens, another time wrapped in mamenori in individual bite sized servings with greens. Either way it’s scrumptious. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Miso soup is a great comfort food and an excellent way to begin your sushi feast. Sam’s miso is exceptional, brimming with carrots, onions and sweet potato, as well as the miso and broth. Don’t care for soup? Try the butter prawns—the name says it all. Want something more exotic? How about ocean salad, ahi poki, papaya crab and Sunomono? Sam’s nigiri sushi begins at $3.95 and is served in pretty much standard fashion. There’s not much you can—or should—do to a formula that includes slabs of raw stuff on little balls of seasoned rice and then joined with a dab of wasabi. That’s the beauty of nigiri—simple and uncooked. But Sam is still Sam, and he does sneak in some non-traditional toppings. Try the power bar with uni, ikura, tobiko, shiso and ika, in that order.
Sam and his sushi The rolls at Sam’s Sushi bar are unbelievable. It’s a good range, starting with your basic crab, avocado and cucumber roll starting at $4.95 and getting more complex with special rolls like the $14.95 Molokini, which includes Kula greens, veggie nori, Dynamite and tobiko. There is also an amazing list of fish combinations. I’ve become attached to the 49’er ($12.50), which is rolled with tuna, hamachi, salmon, tobiko, ebi and kaiware. Equally tasty is the Rock & Roll ($16.95)—a baked roll of eel, cucumber and spicy tuna. Since we all have to drive down Dairy Road at some time or another, you might as well do yourself a favor and stop in at Sam’s. You deserve it. ‘Exalting the Simple’
-From Stefano Resta’s Ho’o’la’a’ia (I Hold You Sacred) about canoe building
an epicenter for visiting musicians, like Babatunde Olatunje and Taj Mahal. Then young Resta left and traveled the world, working on different projects. He finally settled in Marin County to start his own family, but still considers Maui to be his second home and says he has gathered much inspiration from Hawaii. Resta says that through meeting with kumu, discussing the power of hula dance and chant, he has learned that the role of the poet is to capture moments in time. He has discovered that by incorporating his written experiences with the layers of musical sounds, he can present an expansion of a story much like the visual rendering that hula gives to its viewers. “The Hawaiian language is so deep,” says
Stefano Resta says good poetry is like a good bowl of pasta. “Food has always been a big part of the daily ceremony of life—the simple rituals,” he says. “I am a big fan of exalting the simple and food is a way to do that. And hopefully, my poetry appeals to the senses.” In food or in poetry, Resta says he likes to know where it comes from and will go to the source to get it. He wants to go and get the fish from the fishermen and dig up the potatoes from the fields. That way, he sees how taking simple ingredients and making them into a meal, elevates that “simple” idea into something greater. “That has been a part of my life, all of my life, really!” says Resta. Originally from Bolinas, CA, Resta spent most of his life flying between Northern California and Maui, where his father Piero Resta has resided since the early 1970s. Father, son and grandmother ran Piero’s Garden Café in Paia, a little Italian restaurant that was somewhat of

Inventors, he says they “try to invent new forms by fusing island reggae sound with music from the mountains of Mexico and Spanish bullfights. “When I was younger, I would always visualize doing something that involves travel and exploring,” he says. “Most of the characters that I was inspired by were those Ulysses/Odysseus-type characters—long journeys with a lot of the experiences of the unknown, cathartic experiences through travel and interactions with other people and so on. Traveling to un-traveled places is sort of like an opening to an undiscovered landscape of the imagination. You don’t really know what lies around the next corner. The process of discovery is probably the most stimulating part of it.” Stefano Resta will host an Evening of Art, Music and Pasta on Wednesday, May 26, 7-9 p.m. at the Artery in Paia. Resta. “There’s always layers of meaning, which include the spiritual, ancestral and earthly—more like the connotative—layers. The most successful poetry to me also has these layers of meaning.” With this idea in mind, Resta’s latest collection of poems, Earth Temples, Fires and Mandolins, also features recipes like his buddy Giuseppe’s Simple Pasta, which is a penne with crispy pancetta, fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. He suggests serving it up with “the sounds of Paolo Conti.” For Resta, his poetry actually began with the rhythm and cadences of music—the words came later. As it stands now, the music he produces serves as accompaniment to his poetry. With his band of musicians, The Rhythm

The Happy Couple The sizable success of the first Shrek brings to the sequel the original cast of pitch-perfect actors—including Mike Myers as the lovable ogre, Cameron Diaz as his newly green bride Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as the excessively talkative donkey. Although the sequel’s jokes aren’t as trenchant or as many as they were in the original, Shrek 2 dutifully follows the same vein of zippy dialogue and colorful comic episodes that are comfy and gratifying as a bowl of strawberries and cream on a hot summer day. Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) stirs up chaos when she invades the first acquaintance of Shrek with Fiona’s parents (voiced by Julie Andrews and John Cleese) in an attempt to replace Fiona’s ogre husband with her vain son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett). Antonio Banderas adds laughs as the voice of the feisty Puss In Boots, who teams up to help Shrek overcome the evil Fairy Godmother.

★★★★★ The story picks up with Fiona insisting that Shrek join her on a long trip to meet her parents, the King and Queen of a village known as “Far Far Away.” Their arduous journey is made all the longer by the company of Eddie Murphy’s spastic donkey, who can’t stop asking if they have arrived yet every five seconds. When they finally reach their destination, Far Far Away resembles Hollywood right down to the number of chain coffee shops and clothing stores. The obvious product placement is jarring, and reminds us that commercialism is just as much a part of the corporateinfected formula for animated movies as it is for live action features. The King and Queen host a terrific banquet for Fiona and Shrek that digresses into a great food fight with some assistance from
the donkey, who presumes that he too should sit for dinner. The nightmare event spurs the King to wander off into the night to engage an assassin to do away with Shrek, but he hires somewhat less than he bargained for in the guise of a fierce orange tabby with high boots and a fencing foil. This Puss in Boots has a Zorro complex that’s at odds with his inner feline nature. The King’s plan backfires when Shrek saves the kitty’s life and enlists little Puss to assist him and the donkey in finding a potion that will enable Shrek to win back his bride. The filmmakers do a great job of making the most of the cat’s realistic facial expressions. Shrek 2 hits high gear when our three comrades sneak into the Fairy Godmother’s potion factory to the sound of the Buzzcock’s infectiously poppy “Ever Fallen In Love.” The movie also makes crafty use of David Bowie’s song “Changes,” although neither is the song’s original version. Puss in Boots locates a beauty potion in the enormous factory that turns Shrek, and Fiona, into attractive human beings. The donkey also imbibes some of the magic purple liquid, turning him into an overzealous white stallion. Pop culture references flourish as does the inclusion of fairy tale creatures like Pinocchio, the Ginger Bread Man, the wolf from Little Red Riding hood, and even three blind mice. But it’s the Ginger Bread Man who gets the most attention when he’s super-sized to King Kong scale to help Shrek get back into the fortified castle in time to rescue Fiona from the Fairy Godmother’s scheme to make her fall in love with Prince Charming. There are a couple of regrettable musical numbers with the Fairy Godmother that reduce Shrek 2 to a Broadway play. It’s a wonder that some corner of the animated feature form should still be relegated to a Broadway format. The songs inevitably come off as overbearing efforts, squandering screentime that would be better served by plot or humor. Still, Shrek 2 is an explosion of vibrant color and inventive comedy that plays like a cartoon come to life. While it lacks the freshness and fast twitch wit of the original, Shrek 2 is a spirit-lifting joyride. Rated PG. 92 mins. MTW

Yes it’s true! MauiFEST Hawai’i has created the UpCountry Drive-In Movie Theater, Hawaiian Style. Bring your FM Radio! The movies featured include: The Ride—an awardwinning film about surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku and the spiritually changing modern soul of surfing; Festival of Canoes— a film that explores the soul of the canoe with master carvers and board shapers; and Fiji Firewalkers—a film about Fijians, their land, culture and firewalkers. That special time of the month A guy friend of mine recently told me, “Maybe PMS doesn’t actually exist.” Of course, he didn’t stop there: “Maybe it’s all in your head.” We were talking about the review copy of a book we received from Goofy Foot Press. It’s been the bait for much laughter, discussion and feuding over the past week between the men and women of our office. Paul Joannides’ Guide To Getting It On! is a 782-page illustrated sex manual with topics like “Rubbing the Nub? Beating the Bush? Giving Girl-Masturbation a Name.” There are also highly informative chapters in “The Zen of Finger Fucking,” “Dyslexia of the Penis,” “Fun With Your Foreskin” and “When The Tide Turns Red.” It’s a pretty enjoyable read, actually. From the anthropological study of Barbie dolls to the how-tos on having “Sex On the Rail Of The Hoover Dam,” I’ve gleaned much to talk about at cocktail parties and Feng Shui fashion shows to come. Basically, the book calls Premenstrual Syndrome “a myth,” suggesting PMS was invented by pharmaceutical companies to drudge up more money and by men after World War II in an effort to get the “hormonally unstable” women off the work force and back home. But tell that to a female co-worker currently in pre-cycle or a suddenly melancholy girlfriend and just watch the sparks fly. True, certain women use the whole PMS thing as an excuse for inexcusable behavior and general flakiness. And yes, the nasty-mood concept of PMS has such wide parameters that even men could be accused of having The Monthly Bitch as well. All I’m saying is, with the trials and tribulations of that first time trying to figure out how to use a tampon, enduring the embarrassment of visible bleed-through in public, the horrors and uncertainties of having a “late” period and so much more, would it be so bad to allow us women-folk some belief in the validity of PMS?! Shut up and get me some chocolate. Men do get PMS, my friend said. He calls it Pre-Mortgage Syndrome—the time of month when males stress before their house payment is due. Anyway, after a quick phone call with his girlfriend, my friend sheepishly came back to apologize. “Alright, Sam, PMS exists—that book’s wrong,” he said. “It’s as real as this copy machine and that filing cabinet.” Amen. Another point my erudite companion brought up is the idea of instinct. He theorized that PMS might be a biological imperative in mammals that signifies to the opposite sex in a somewhat hostile manner that they should plant their seed at another time. He even suggested that the reason women who live and/or work together all seem to “get on the same cycle” is due to the “pack” nature of females in an effort to eliminate unwanted exuberance. Which brings me to the next book. A Tiger in the Bedroom: Lessons from Mother Nature’s Sex Shop is a little book by Katherine Gould—Andrews McMeel Publishing—that uses examples of mating rituals in the animal kingdom as relationship advice and sex tips for us “evolved” primates. In a lesson called “Get rid of a loser,” Gould tells us how female brown hares fight off the males they don’t want in “little bunny boxing matches.” Kind of makes you appreciate the more passive-aggressive premise of the PMS tactic of “Go away, I have a headache. Hey, where are you going?—Hold me!” eh? Well, okay, maybe not. And proving that size isn’t everything, the elephant’s penis weighs 50 pounds, is fully muscled and is a whopping SIX FEET LONG. And yet, an elephant’s sexual performance lasts as little as 15 seconds. Sounds like someone I once dated. There’s all kinds of advice, too, like “Just because he’s small, doesn’t mean he’s small” and “Maybe it’s okay to be afraid of commitment” or “If all else fails, please yourself” that stems from observing the natural behavior of animals and insects. I mean, it’s got it all—from adultery and prostitution to orgies and sex toys—and valuable lessons to glean from buffalo weaver birds and European garden slugs. And my favorite tidbit, in the chapter “Fatal Attractions or How Can I Respect You in the Morning If I’m Dead?” is about how male fruit flies that try to impress females die earlier than their ambivalent cohorts and how male roundworms isolated from the females end up living much longer. The lesson? “Dating is hazardous to your health.” No kidding. MTW
