Ooooooooo! How did Ted Rall get to be so cool? And what a controversial Op Ed (“An Army of Scum,” May 13)! Let me just say this—is he ever on the cutting edge journalism! I’m going to submit his latest article to the Pulitzer people. He deserves at least a nomination for such a well-written, well-researched and welldocumented piece of insightful journalism. The New York Times or Washington Post should be so lucky! Until I read Ted’s column I didn’t know those darn scummy “inbred psychos” of the U.S. Army and the German Waffen SS are one in the same. Zyklon B. Hmmmm, it’s all starting to make sense to me now, thanks to Ted. “However, this tragic truism can be mitigated by creating mechanisms to ensure transparency behind bars.” Good work Ted. I had never thought of that. I hope you guys learn from Ted. This island is too small to contain a rare talent such as Ted. He’s going places—LA, New York, or maybe even Washington. I look forward to his meteoric rise to journalistic superstardom. Hooray for Ted!! -Richard, via email The Editor responds: Actually, Ted Rall writes his column from New York, but thanks for your interest in his aggressive, alternative take on politics and military affairs.

JOSHUA COOPER, NOT SO MUCH What would our planet look like today without money, capitalism, bills, highly developed industry, tourism and the internet? We obviously can’t stop progress, but is there another way to look at the modernization of the world, and Hawaii? “On Maui, there are pockets still preserved, where you walk through sandy deserts, past pyramid-like mounds dotting the crater floor, through rain forests, where the only sounds are the soft beats of

our heart and nature,” Joshua Cooper tells us in “Get Rid of Progress” (May 6, 2004). He explains that the way to save Hawaii is “to let nature flow and not be determined by tourism and dollar demands.” Later he talks about us “not enjoying this splendor, but serving and struggling for survival, prostituting with shameless abandon.” Let me, as a resident, ask what does the author propose to save Hawaii? Of course, we can think about independence of the islands and primitive social life, but since capitalism and modernization came here it barely makes sense to talk about returning to the old times. Don’t take me wrong—I’m not for total progress. But I would really like to hear what is possible to do to make our cultural and spiritual way of life better? We should begin with ourselves. Yes, we work hard so we can financially support our dream of living in such a beautiful place. I work in the service industry myself, but I’ve learned to appreciate my job. It’s sad that most of our jobs we have are non-creative service jobs. But this is such a small price to pay for such a great gift as this island. We should recycle to protect our land and love and respect each other. But if all of us love each moment that we’re here, then our stay will be much easier. -Anna Trubachova, Lahaina

How military families cope with the war in Iraq

Spies, roosters and corn chowder

Mary Chun’s lawn isn’t weeded like it used to be. She’s using paper plates more often, and dusting seems more like a luxury than an imperative. She doesn’t really have a choice, considering her husband is 10,000 miles away in Iraq. “He was a bus driver with Polynesian Adventure Tours,” the Wailuku resident and Hawaii Job Corps teacher said of her 54-year-old husband Henry. He doesn’t drive busses anymore but does operate heavy construction equipment as part of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 411th Engineering Battalion. In March, Company A, Detachment 1 of the unit— which had been based on Maui—deployed to Camp Victory North near Baghdad International Airport, one of the largest U.S. military bases built since the Vietnam war. They will be gone 18 months. “He’s there with 20-year-olds,” she said. “They’re all from Tennessee. I don’t want to think about what he’s going to sound like [when he gets back].” Chun and two other wives of local reservists—part of a collection of military family members calling themselves the Army Reserve Family Readiness Group— spoke at the Dunes at Maui Lani Restaurant before a crowd of about 50. They were the special guest speakers at a May 18 meeting of the Maui League of Republican Women. Chun got up first, as well as gave the meeting’s opening prayer. She spoke confidently and forcefully about the problems facing her husband—having to send him a rice cooker, for instance, because the unit’s barracks is a two mile walk from the

Men at work main mess hall, while wearing 45 pounds of armor and gear in 114 degrees of heat. The slightest exertion in that heat—perhaps pounding a single nail into a wall—will drench the men in perspiration. She also talked of how her fellow wives face losing their husbands to a controversial, dangerous war in the Middle East. “Some of these women have never had to balance a checkbook,” she said. “Some are pregnant. Some of the women are battling cancer. Some of these women are really hurting. But they’re finally getting to the point of saying ‘I need help.’ You can’t go 18 months without moving on.” Indeed, Chun was so articulate and matterof-fact that it was hard not to be stunned when she suddenly choked up halfway through the sentence “He does what he enjoys doing.” She paused for a while, then tried again but still couldn’t say the words, so she paused again before finally rushing through them a third time, which almost begged the visibly uncomfortable audience to imagine Chun and her husband discussing the fact that “what he enjoys doing” is quite possibly driving her nuts. Virginia Brown is another of the wives in the group. For the last nine years co-manager of the Harbor Lights Condominium in Kahului, her husband’s shipping off to Iraq made her full-time manager. “He calls me every night before I go to bed and wakes me up in the morning,” she told me shortly before the meeting began. “It’s amazing to get letters. Just like the movies.” Brown said her husband, 52-year-old Sergeant First Class Clem Brown, was really surprised to get activated.

“We were always told that our reserves here in Hawaii were here to protect our backyard,” she said, referring to the Pacific and Asia. “He kept saying [when he got his orders] ‘Hun, I should have retired. I should have retired.’” Brown said watching the news doesn’t much affect her. “We’ve always watched the news,” she said. “I rely on the Today Show in the morning, the national news in the evening. I don’t think it alarms me like some of the others. I find it’s better for me. [But] there’s too much idle time. People watch the news too much. I’m the oldest wife, so I’m the one they tend to call at five in the morning when they can’t sleep.” The last wife to speak was Lisa Texeira, a mother of two girls, aged 14 and seven, and a 15-month-old son. Though her husband did get to see his son take his first step, she said he was at Schofield Barracks on Oahu preparing to depart for Iraq when the boy celebrated his first birthday. She also talked of the “added cost” the deployments have placed on their lives. For instance, it costs families about $30 to send a 12-pound care package to Iraq. “And we’re doing that almost on a daily basis,” she said. “I’m not complaining, but people need to realize we’re not living in the lap of luxury.” For more information on the Army Reserve Family Readiness Group, call 280-0947.

Once a month the Maui County Liquor Control Adjudication Board holds its public hearings to rule over large and small liquor law violations. The board members, appointed by the mayor for five year terms, hold great power over bar, restaurant and convenience mart owners. Yet very little is known about the four women and five men who sit in judgment of the county’s liquor licensees. Because they have quasi-judicial status, their normally public statements of economic interest—which outline their income as well as bank, stock and property holdings—are secret. And The Maui News seems almost contractually obligated to ignore the Board. Indeed, in its sprawling May 22 story on the legacy of the recently deceased former councilman Goro Hokomana, News reporter Ilima Loomis and city editor Edwin Tanji quoted extensively from Ron McOmber, but identified him as a “Lanai community advocate” instead of four-year Adjudication Board member (for more on McOmber, see “Serious Trouble,” Apr. 15). Still, some information is available. Consider the following:

Shigeto Murayama A Wailuku realtor, Murayama talks the most at Board meetings, most notably because he got himself elected chairman a couple months ago. He’s been in Maui politics a long time—in fact, he was elected county treasurer back in 1968, but couldn’t immediately take office because his reserve Army unit was activated. Sent to Tay Ninh, Vietnam, the already 20-year reserve veteran Murayama served as intelligence officer for the 1st Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division.

Marilyn Chapman A member from Kihei, this Maui Disposal Company sales manager comments and asks questions fairly often. Recently, she complimented a gas station manager for the fact that she’s always carded when she and her husband buy booze at his store. Speaking of her husband, she told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin last year that a new family of roosters that moved in down the street gave him high blood pressure.

Donna Domingo She’s one of the quiet ones who rarely, if ever, speaks during the hearings. But she’s a powerful Democratic Party member and union official, currently serving as vice president of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142. She also makes a mean corn chowder, and got her recipe included in Democratic State Senator Roz Baker’s cookbook.

The State of Hawaii Legislature introduced more bills related to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) than any other state in the Union, according to today’s report from the Washington, D.C.-based Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology. “Given the large number of GM field trials conducted, the extensive agricultural research occurring, and the natural biodiversity found in Hawaii, this is not altogether surprising,” reported the Pew Initiative. The study further reported that Hawaii’s “remote location” helped explain why the GMO labcoats liked to experiment out here. Indeed, the study makes clear that since Jan. 1, 1995, “Hawaii is cited in 1500 of 8978 applications for field trials of GM crops.” (Check out “Tomatoes Behaving Badly,” July 24, 2003, to see Maui Time’s take on the explosion in local GMO research). Now before you start waving the “Down with Scary Science” flag, keep in mind we’re only talking about 25 bills that were introduced in the legislature, dealing with issues like protecting resources discovered through “bioprospecting,” liability for cross-pollinated crops, public disclosure of GMO research sites and even a moratorium on GM Kona coffee. And while that’s way more bills than states like Iowa, which last time I checked has nothing in it at all except corn fields and pig farms, absolutely nothing happened to the vast majority of those bills. In fact, just two passed out of our legislature, and one of them funded programs to support biotech research.

The greatest thing about today’s modern “conservative” Republicans is that they’re the only true radicals out there blasting away at American tradition. Thirty years ago, it was the Left that wanted to get rid of this and ban that—today, it’s the Grand Old Party that wants a clean slate. Case in point: The Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values’ and state representative Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo’s wish to emasculate the U.S. Constitution’s “full faith and credit” clause with an amendment banning homosexuals from getting married. (Note: Notorious gay-baiting Republican congressional candidate Mike Gabbard, who’s trying to unseat Democrat incumbent congressman Ed Case, literally and figuratively gave birth to both the Alliance and Tamayo.) “Homosexuals married in Massachusetts will soon come to Hawaii and challenge the 1998 decision by Hawaii’s people to ban same-sex marriages,” Tamayo said at a press confer-

Bush made nearly three years ago, when asked by a Reuters reporter that the OPEC cartel was going to cut oil production and raise prices. The quote leaves no doubt that Bush cares far more that already wealthy oil sheikhs and executives have a “stable market” than the American people have low gas prices: “It’s very important for there to be stability in the marketplace. I’ve read some comments from the OPEC ministers who said this was just a matter to make sure the market remains stable and predictable.”

ence she organized to push The Alliance’s agenda. And she’s undoubtedly correct, though it’s far more likely that the legions of homosexual couples married in Massachusetts will come to the islands for the same reason so many straight married couples do—a kick-ass honeymoon.

The one thing about the federal government you can always count on—when you speak, they don’t listen. Case in point is today’s press release from the National Park Service concerning Haleakala National Park. Headlined “Haleakala announces flat rates for cabin fees,” the release explains that the Park Service decided to start charging all groups of 12 or less campers $75 per night for use of three crater cabins. Using the old pricing system, this change will save groups of seven to 12 people $5 a night, but add $35 a night to the fees paid by groups of six or less people. Of course, this change comes after the Park Service solicited comments from the cabinusing public. “In a news release last November, the park asked for comments on a proposed increase of $55/$110 to cover the higher costs to operate the lottery/reservation system, provide fire logs and propane to these remote wilderness sites,” stated today’s release. “Five comments were received, four against the proposal and one in favor.” And that, my friends, is democracy in action.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 19

FRIDAY, MAY 21

So I was at the old service station this morning, 10 gallons into an 11-gallon fill-up, when I suddenly remembered that today is Don’t Buy Gas Day. After stomping around and cursing and kicking the pump repeatedly, I decided to do what any red-blooded American would do: drive away with paying. I was about two miles down the road before I realized that I had already paid with my credit card before I ever put the nozzle in the car, and that I’d somehow forgotten to retrieve it from the pump. So that made me even angrier, though not nearly so much as when I made a u-turn and saw that in my haste to leave I’d also forgot to unhook the nozzle from my car… Okay, so some of those things may not have happened exactly that way. But today is the day when you’re supposed to spend your hardearned cash on something a little more honorable than a multinational oil giant, like a bottle of Jim Beam or a hooker. And to help put you in the right mood, I’m going to steal a page from the playbook of Slate.com’s Timothy Noah and quote a statement our fearless leader George W.

The Maui Police made record drug hauls in the first four months of this year, reported the Maui Police Department and Maui News reporter Lila Fujimoto. The fuzz seized a record 836 and a quarter pounds of drugs this year, of which a scant 832 pounds was marijuana—the remainder being a pound and a quarter of Ice and three pounds of cocaine. But in the same period last year, the cops only took in 495.75 pounds of drugs, with just 495 pounds of that load being the dreaded weed. Seriously, on this island, would you have thought otherwise?… Thanks to CNN, the whole world knows that the Hawaii state Board of Education met yesterday in Wailuku and approved making surfing an official high school sport. But a far more interesting development at that BOE meeting was hearing San Antoniobased Harcourt Assessment executives try to explain why the standardized tests they produced for Hawaii 3rd, 5th, 8th and 10th grade students contained 45 errors—a bit more than the supposedly “defect-free”’ tests the company had promised. “We discovered that in most instances, employees took shortcuts and did not follow established quality control procedures,” was how a company statement explained the problem, according to today’s Maui News. “Because of this, they did not detect or correct these problems before printing and distributing these materials.” MTW

In April, Luftee Abdul Waalee, 48, was sentenced to three years in prison for trying to pass a fake U.S. Treasury check for $25 million at a credit union in Pittsburgh. According to the prosecutor, Waalee is a member of the “Moors” black separatist group that supposedly believes that each American is endowed with a secret government account worth around $600,000, based on a theory that when the U.S. went off the gold standard in 1933, it began backing its currency not with a precious metal but with the prospective labor of its citizens.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY Recent news from the Washington, D.C., public school system, which by some measures is the poorest-performing in the country while simultaneously being the most expensive: D.C. schools were found to spend $234 per year per pupil on security (twice as much as Philadelphia, for instance, and five times as much as Baltimore, according to an April Washington Times report). Also, in one high school last year, 56 percent of students had streaks of at least 15 absences that were unexcused. And in an accounting-firm review of 944 student records in 16 high schools, in “hundreds” of cases the grade ultimately posted did not match the grade turned in, according to the report described in a December Washington Post story.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT In March, a Shell/Site convenience store manager in North Naples, Fla., found employee Robert Lee King, 41, lying on the floor rubbing off one not-yet-purchased lottery ticket after another, looking for winners, stacking the used tickets neatly in two piles. The incredulous manager said he tried to explain to King that that isn’t the way the lottery business works, whereupon King calmly took his stack of winners and walked out. The manager called in a sheriff’s deputy, explained the problem, and showed the surveillance tape of King with the tickets, and while the deputy was writing his report, King happened to come back in to ask for his paycheck. He was charged with grand theft.

As in previous years, misguided rockets started fires in nearby houses, but unlike in some years, there were no deaths.

Yet today, just a scant 10 years later, the women of that country are providing a new model of gender justice and leadership. I was fortunate enough to learn such good news by meeting with women from Rwanda and neighboring nations in Africa at a recent United Nations meeting in New York. With the hope and promises of the 21st century looming, people everywhere looked at Rwanda and asked how such bloody acts could happen. Now, with women constituting nearly 50 percent of the national Rwandan assembly, it’s hard not to look at the rest of the world and wonder why such acts aren’t happening. It’s hard to forget how bad things truly were 10 years ago. The tea and coffee growing country became synonymous with sheer terror when extremists in the largest ethnic group, the Hutus, created and executed a plan of brutality aiming to exterminate the minority Tutsis. In just 100 days more than 800,000 people were murdered. Tutsis were the main target,

but many Hutu who tried to fight the genocide were killed, too. The reports of killing splashed blood across the world’s television sets. Less publicized has been Rwanda’s recovery—indeed, its political renaissance. Bold and courageous women have been asserting an agenda for a new Africa that deserves the headlines of newspapers and TV reports. It is a stunning example of female empowerment and representative democracy. In fact, the Kigali government has the best gender parity of all the world’s national parliaments. Women hold 48.8 percent of the seats in the National Assembly—the next closest country is Sweden with 45 percent. The reason for this stunning upset is that the post-genocide reconstruction included legal actions taken to ensure that women would play as large a role in the decision-making process as the peace-building measures they’d taken to stop the 1994 violence. Of the 80 seats in the National Assembly, 24 were immediately dedicated to women seeking public office under the new constitution. Women went beyond the reserved number of seats picking up an additional 15 seats, pro-

viding a total of 39 seats in the lower house. Women also were successful in the upper house, securing six of the 20 Senate seats. In the executive branch, women hold nine of the 28 ministerial positions. For advocates of women’s rights around the world, there is now no better example than Rwanda. Even we might want to examine this achievement of near gender equality in politics. In our own 100-member Senate, there are just 14 women. Over in the House of Representatives, a

Of the nation’s 8 million people, women comprise 54 percent of the population and 60 percent of the workforce. They’ve been organizing for the past 10 years, building programs to share the skills for women to run for office. The women’s movement is looking at new laws to make sure that every aspect of governments pushes these issues. Women are building on their roles of life creators and peacemakers to create legal instruments that break the cycle of discrimination against women.

FOR ADVOCATES OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS AROUND THE WORLD, THERE IS NOW NO BETTER EXAMPLE THAN RWANDA. EVEN WE MIGHT WANT TO EXAMINE THIS ACHIEVEMENT OF NEAR GENDER EQUALITY IN POLITICS. mere 62 women are serving in that assembly of 435 elected officials—the same 14 percent breakdown you find in the Senate. In fact, in the entire history of the U.S. just 193 women have been elected representatives. But on the plus side, the WNBA is gaining in popularity and a brand-new Lingerie Football League is being formed across the nation. Every nation has a long road to walk toward gender justice. And unlike the 1994 killing, gaining power hasn’t been easy for Rwanda’s women.

Remember, it wasn’t until 1920 that American women won their suffragette struggle for self-determination. It was a single vote in a single state legislature in the United States that allowed America to follow the path Aoteroa, New Zealand took back in 1893 in recognizing women’s participation. It is time to listen to our sisters from Africa and learn how they educated and empowered their citizens to stand up and bring about the changes we want to see in the world. MTW

The Ultimate Fighter If only Ed Searfoss could get a bout Ed Searfoss had his first real fight in high school. A menacing collection of Samoans, Hawaiians and other equally intimidating Pacific Islander types were hassling a female friend so he called them out. The brawl was less than remarkable, with several awkward, high school kid punches thrown before, as he remembers it today, security “got him out of there.” But he did learn something: when you stand your ground, you can get massive amounts of respect. So he never stopped fighting. Searfoss is one of an ever-growing number of “Ultimate Fighting” enthusiasts. The concept of Ultimate Fighting began in the early 1990s, when martial artists asked what would happen if a Kung Fu master fought a boxer. A sumo wrester vs. Tae Kwon Do black belt? Just about anyone who’s been a martial arts student has harbored such thoughts. Like adolescents pitting a praying mantis against a spider, Ultimate Fighting proved to be a laboratory of glorious violence co-existing with near-scientific seriousness regarding the pros and cons of this fighting style over that. It’s revolutionized the world of professional fighting. Via Pay-Per-View, fans can watch with masochistic glee for a glimpse of the much-anticipated bone shattering knockouts. Matches can often be quick and brutal, but many who had been weaned on professional wrestling and Hollywood were let down. The explosive outbursts of righteous carnage are often sandwiched between agonizing minutes of technical grappling. Blood and gore are often pres-

Eddy Searfoss is considered Maui’s best. Searfoss says he was raised by strict parents who to this day are uneasy about his chosen hobby. They support him, but they worry: the blood, gore, pretty much the same reasons why he was attracted to the sport in the first place. It’s the classic generational paradox: that which repels mom and dad is uncontrollably attractive to the kids. When I met him, his trainer Ira Hookano, introduced him as the “next big thing” on Maui, a label Eddy clearly didn’t like. “I don’t know about that,” he says when I ask him about it. Then he throws his hands up theatrically in mock defeat. “But whatever Ira says goes!” “Next big thing” or not, there doesn’t seem to be any vanity or self-importance to him. He’s soft-spoken and quiet. He carries himself with a modesty that belies his ability to break your bones. But it’s precisely this dichotomy that seems to make Eddy Searfoss likable and endearing. He looms large, heavy and strong, but he also wears braces and has piercing blue eyes framed by a boyish face. Searfoss has a grueling training schedule sandwiched between two jobs. Waking up a 6:30 a.m., he spends his day managing an industrial gas company. After clocking out, he sweats at Gold’s Gym for a couple hours, then goes to the 808 Fight Club to train under Ho’okano. This goes on for two more hours, and then Searfoss goes to work as a bouncer at Hapa’s nightclub. That adds up to four hours of training and 16 hours of work, everyday. Just hearing this makes me

In Hawaii Ultimate Fight style matches are overwhelmingly dominated by Pacific Islanders, which makes Searfoss’ haole face stand out that much more. Searfoss has had to prove himself, rising above the skepticism and dismissal that initially met him. “It’s been a constant battle,” he says. Every fighter needs his fight, but his has unfortunately eluded him. For this story, I went to the recent “Warriors of the Ring” match in Kahului to watch him fight. His opponent, for reasons unspecified, bowed out the previous day. While it may have been due to an injury, it could also have been a case of cold feet. Searfoss is large and intimidating. It discouraged him. He was looking forward to it. People came to see him, and the absence of the planned bout was conspicuous. Despite the setback, Searfoss took the time to train, spar and dispense advise to his teammates. After the event, I saw him leave the auditorium carrying assorted fighting paraphernalia, pads and such. Loaded down with gear and walking with his girlfriend, the “Main Event on Maui” looked anonymous and discreet, less like the Great White Hope and more like a member of the event staff. Seeing me standing, he came over and politely asked if I needed help or a ride. I was struck at the lack of ego, at his maturity and kindness. Searfoss is a good guy in a tough business. His trainer and entourage predicts that he’s going places, and I have no doubt that he will.

The fighters wear no pads except for gloves, but that’s a cynical precaution to protect the gladiator’s hands rather than his opponent’s face. Still, the sport is masculine and violent. Fighters have been badly hurt.

Every fighter needs his fight ent, but such moments tend to happen within the first 15 seconds of the match. More common is the sight of fighters locked in silent struggle, occasionally wiggling around in positions that look somewhat sexual. The fighters wear no pads except for gloves, but that’s a cynical precaution to protect the gladiator’s hands rather than his opponent’s face. Still, the sport is masculine and violent. Fighters have been badly hurt. As the notoriety of Ultimate Fighting spread, so did the outrage of its opponents, who enlisted medical, political and media heavies, promoters to their cause. Ultimate Fighting found itself exiled from the mainstream, it’s formidable popularity and status diminished. Once packing arenas and huge event halls, Ultimate Fighting had diminished to the point of staging a competition outside of a Mississippi casino. Today, Ultimate Fighting is making resurgence with the newer, less ultimate name of “mixed martial arts.” The difference, I am told, is in the fine print—mixed martial arts has many more rules and regulations. But clearly, the name change is window dressing, meant to make the event more acceptable and accessible. There is the menacing finality of the title “Ultimate Fighting,” with its implications of unsavory carnage. But mixed martial arts is, well, just mixed. Everyone loves mixed stuff, right? In any case, the sport is catching on like wildfire in Hawaii, and 24-year-old

want to nap. Eddy tells me he has always been a physical guy. “BMX biking, surfing, anything physical, I was there,” he says. “I used to want to be a ninja,” he confesses with a sheepish grin. He says he came into martial arts relatively late in life, after a brief and unsuccessful affair with Kung Fu. This is underPHOTO: B. SHALEV standable. Kung Fu seems incongruous with both Eddy’s physiology and attitude. He is tall and burly, but Kung Fu practitioners tend to be smaller in stature. Searfoss is a self-described “extremist” in a discipline emphasizing quiet contemplation, reflection and frugality. Grasshopper Eddy Searfoss he is not. But immediately after attending an Ultimate Fighting match, he was converted. His start was sublime. People laughed at him. But after seeing his work ethic, determination and will to succeed, they stopped laughing. Now nobody laughs. Eddy puts an extraordinary amount of pressure on himself to succeed, to make people and himself happy. Before a match he is racked with nerves and self-doubt. But he says the tremulousness has more to do with not letting his people or himself down than with losing. “I want to give people a good show,” he says, gesturing wildly with his hands. Eddy conducts himself with a humility that is at once disarming and endearing. While trainers from other gyms court him, his loyalty is with his original trainer and manager. It is this type of moral turpitude that promoters of Ultimate Fighting should capitalize on. He maintains a quiet dignity in a face of an often brutal sport. He fights people and is good at it, but at the same time tells me that he is “nice... too nice, that’s my problem. Sometimes when I’m training, I’ll be in a spot where I can get a guy and I’ll be asking if he is okay.”

Ultimate Fighting, its offshoots—Toughman, So You Think You’re Tough, and others—films like Fight Club as well as professional wrestling represent the cultural need for ritual. Social critics and other snobs deplore the Ultimate Fighting phenomenon, saying it’s representative of an increasingly violent cultural standard. But they miss the point that spectacles like Ultimate Fighting enable us to vicariously express the central, collective emotions of victory, justice and struggle. It is highly ritualized, with much fuss and bother about the preparation for the matches, regionalized with emphases on this island versus that island, Maui boys against Oahu boys and so forth. Superficial or not, it’s important to a lot of people. Guys like Eddy Searfoss do our subconscious dirty work—dirty work that we in our tame and civilized society are too timid to perform. Blood and gore titillate the masses for simple and obvious reasons: human beings are violent. We identify with, and respond to, violence and competition. We have a deeply evolved and potent respect toward the fighting man because he represents a side of history and culture that society wants and needs but all too often slanders as brutish and feral. All of the competitors I’ve seen in the sport are men, as was most of the paying audience. This can’t be a coincidence. After Sept. 11, 2001, the nation saw a resurgence in maleness—the cop, marine, firefighter, hero. Ultimate Fighting is another step in that direction. Ultimate Fighting and similar rituals are the unavoidable and irrepressible masculine response to an emasculated condition. They’re a beacon of unapologetic machismo in a sea of gender inertia, a testosterone injected response to hours of tedious “sensitivity training” at work, of not-knowing-your-party’s-extension-number, having to sit with your girlfriend and watch boring episodes of Sex in the City. These men don’t want to “trade spaces” and redecorate your breakfast nook— they want to break bones and sweat. Searfoss and those like him are simply a bridge to certitude in a time of social disarray. They are just a connection to a part of ourselves, and of society that is both ancient and familiar in a time of chaos, war and mistrust. That is, when their opponents actually show. MTW

Most people who walk into the Java Jazz & Soup Nutz café in Honokowai notice the abundance of Barbie dolls, in various stages of undress. There are Barbies cavorting on the rock waterfall that covers one corner, Barbies cavorting with a figurine of Santa Claus on the ledge separating the coffee bar area with the restaurant bar side, and of course, a few Barbies in a cage that hangs over one of the back tables. And they hear the swanky modern jazz, both instrumental and with crooning vocalists, playing on what must be the best sound system in a coffee bar/restaurant ever. Three guitars hang above the mixing board and microphone that is tucked against the wall between the two restrooms. Of course, they see the walls covered in contemporary artwork, most of them owner Farzad’s dynamic paintings, but also some by Maui artist Nancy Hoke. Around the periphery of the restaurant’s shiny copper top bar is a line of lowhanging, blue-violet beaded, tiny lamps. It’s hard not to miss the Mediterranean influences in the angled archways, embroidered pillows and sheer drapery, as well as the mosaic candleholders and metal vases holding bouquets of colorful flowers. Or the ceiling fans, swirling the fumes of fresh herbs and coffee around the dining area. And a few might notice that all the servers are attractive. In fact, Java Jazz is notorious throughout the west side as having some of the hottest tail in the biz. So I’ve heard. One of my friends thinks this is because customers “are much more willing to wait when the servers are that cute.” Not that we’ve had to wait or anything—we’re just saying. It’s the kind of place you can comfortably go solo, or with your best friend to gossip over chocolate chip pancakes and coffee, or on a romantic first date with lots of alcohol and steamed clams or on a lunch visit with your friendly psychic discussing chakras over chai tea. It’s eclectic and fun, yet still relaxed and welcoming. My dining companion and I once went in for late afternoon dessert and cordials. We noticed the specials board listed Chef Tutu Apple Pie Cheesecake, Chocolate Decadence Cake and Banana Bread Pudding so we asked our super-cute server for more details. After she explained how each dessert was prepared and presented, she smiled. “All the desserts are amazing,” she said. “It makes it hard when you work here and you want to eat them all the time!” Another customer at the bar nodded his head in agreement as he finished the last bite of his Spinach Salad with shaved red

Is that Ken up there? onion, candied walnuts, bleu cheese, bacon, tomatoes and apples in balsamic vinaigrette. “All of the food here is really good,” he said. Such as the Tuscany Chicken sandwich with roasted red pepper, spinach, pepper jack cheese and pesto mayo on focaccia. Or the Thai Turkey on sourdough with cranberry relish and sweet Thai chili cream cheese. But we were discussing dessert. My friend and I finally decided on the flourless chocolate cake with raspberry puree and the bread pudding made with sweet bread and honey. Meanwhile, the talk between our server and the customer at the bar turned to breakfast. Java Jazz has your morning standards, like the Three-Cheese Omelet and Breakfast Bagel. But they also feature delicacies like the Frittata with sausage, veggies and feta cheese, or the Hana Omelet with goat cheese, spinach, onion and tomato. Also, their French Toast is made with Hawaiian sweet bread, cream cheese and raspberry coulis. The server said she went somewhere else for breakfast just that morning and it wasn’t very good. “How do you make eggs and toast gross?” she asked. Along with the desserts mentioned on the

board, there are also daily soup specials like Beef Stew, Potato Leek, Spicy Veggie or Cream of Broccoli. On the day we were dessert-ing, a dinner special listed “sautéed scallops with papayaginger lime beurre blanc for $18.95.” There’s also the very delicious appetizer otherwise known as the Sun Dried Tomato Goat Cheese ($8.95), which has fresh tomato basil dip and grilled sourdough baguette that will accommodate up to four people. They have dinner entrees from Angel Hair Pomadoro ($9.95) and Chicken Picatta ($17.95) to Filet Mignon ($24.95) and Spiny Lobster Tail ($25.95, regardless of market price!), in addition to a kid-friendly selection. After we happily devoured our desserts, our bartendress made us a couple of Barbados Cosmospolitans—her exclusive specialty—but she wouldn’t tell us what was in it until we tasted it. “Trust me,” she said, smiling. And we did. But it had nothing to do with her being cute. Soup Nutz & Java Jazz is located at 3350 Lower Honoapiilani Hwy in Honokowai. They are open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call them at 667-0787 or visit their website at www.javajazz.net. MTW

Maui Community College Chef Instructor I started working for the winery in Ulupalakua when I was 14 and my dad told me I needed to get a job. It was a grungy job picking grapes. After I left there I went to Taco Lei. Then when I was in high school I worked at the Pukalani Country Club as a short order cook. I was a good cook and enjoyed it so I went to the culinary academy at MCC. When I graduated I thought I was gonna come in and be the chef. I couldn’t even get an interview. Then I got a job at the Space Needle in Seattle. I was also a part of the Oregon Culinary team in 1992 and competed at the Culinary Food Olympics in Germany. I was the youngest person the team had ever taken. There were six competitors. We took home 17 medals, taking silver and bronze. My first real chef job was at a place called the Fifth Avenue on the Mainland, an Italian place. I love Italian but us local boys don’t do too good in the rain and the snow. I came home for a friend’s wedding and seven days later I was working at the Hyatt Cascades Sushi bar. Eight months after that I was the chef of the banquet department. I’ll tell you, going abroad is great because you get to learn about other cultures and their recipes, but the hot thing right now is Hawaiian cooking. Everyone wants to know “How do I make that seared Ahi?” When I worked for the hotel, we prepared a luau for 700 people each day. It was lots of hours, lots and lots of food for lots of people. My job now as Chef Instructor at MCC is sort of like what you did at the hotel. You are always training people when you’re a chef. But when it’s the end of the day and the kids finally grasp what you’re teaching them it’s so much more rewarding than feeding tourists. Not that I have anything against tourists. And it certainly ain’t the money you were making at the hotel, but it just feels better. MTW

‘Between Clever and Stupid’ Is a great band called Fine Line For most bands, getting a group together or even just recruiting a new member requires intense work and emotion. They usually start by putting small ads in the local paper, asking for a new drummer or guitarist or whatever to call the manager. Then, depending on how many people respond, they’d set up a sweat-dripping audition or two at the studio or in some guy’s garage. There, after they played a couple sets, everyone would ask questions of each other until whoever was manager that week decided that this, finally, is the band and they should get on with it. The reggae band Fine Line didn’t do any of that. They began two and half years ago when a couple strangers at an open mic night at Life’s a Beach. They were at a party for mutual friends. “We met and hit it off,” said lead guitarist Scott Zupner said. “We just clicked.” They clicked just like peanut butter and jelly. No, more like coconut shells and big boobs. That’s it. No, wait—like deodorant goes with an armpit. Where was I? Oh yeah—Fine Line combines Zupner’s guitar work and back up vocals with Jarod Quevido’s electric ukulele and lead vocals. The rest of the members met at Life’s a Beach as well. Their background in music is pretty diverse, enabling the band to create a unique reggae-Hawaiian sound. Dewey Avina plays bass and Dave Nappier plays the drums. There is not a single dreadlock on stage. Zupner said he considers the band to be one big melting pot. His playing brings a rock edge while others supply more reggae and even jazz sounds. Fine Line covers songs from a mix of the legendary Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, Sublime and Santana. They are in the process of writing their own music. On stage, they have a tendency to improvise. “I think our group is a fine line between clever and stupid,” Zupner said. And that’s how they got their name, though most of the fans probably think them more clever than stupid. And they are pretty clever. For instance, they never get together to practice. When I told one woman in the audience this fact, she was impressed. “Shit,” she said, “only really talented artists can do what they do and sound like they practice all of the time.” Fine Line meets every Saturday to play either Life’s a Beach or the Sandbar in Paia and they jam. Not only do they

Willie K LIVE at A tendency to improvise jam, but they very nearly bring the house down. During their May 22 show at the Sandbar, it seemed that every head was bobbing to the beat and every foot stomping to the bass. The dance floor was, naturally, packed with sweaty bodies bouncing to the group’s unique beats. Fine Line loves it when they can see smiling faces and dancing bodies. One of those was Steve, in from Makawao to catch the show. “I love watching these guys play together,” he told me. “They play with so much heart and soul. They love to get the audience involved in the mix.”

Zupner said rocking out is what is all about—they certainly don’t do it for the money. The members love the band, but they aren’t going to quit their day jobs just yet. One is a surf instructor, one is an electrician and one is a house painter. They’re just your average Joes by day who get to play badass musicians at night. If you would like more information on Fine Line, please contact Quevido at 283-1177. They play every other week at Life’s a Beach in Kihei. Also, look for them at the annual Canoe Regatta. MTW

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Desolation Row Jim Carrey rises above substance Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation) takes the audience down a rabbit hole of his personal neurosis in this distressed story about a confused guy (Jim Carrey) that falls for a mean-spirited girl (Kate Winslet) before each attempt to have their respective memories of each other removed by an experimental psychiatrist. Although some audiences will be captivated by the now familiar American stereotype of a condescending bipolar female character, it’s Winslet’s incarnation of Clementine as a mentally unstable manipulator of weakness that makes the movie icky and distasteful. Poised as a romantic comedy, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is rarely funny and disintegrates into utter abstraction during its overlong running time. Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson give superfluous performances to Jim Carrey’s honest effort at representing a dependent male character at the end of his rope. Director Michel Gondry (Human Nature) attempts to channel Fellini and ends up irrigating faulty plumbing. Memory loss is the plot topic du jour. From Memento to 50 First Dates it’s a narrative hook that promises to keep audiences engaged in spite of their abilities to see through the overbearing plot device.

FILM

But in the hands of Charlie Kaufman the subterfuge becomes a sponge that soaks up all intended drama and humor so that all that you’re left with is a slightly sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. Joel (Carrey) is a lonely blue-collar guy who wonders if he shouldn’t try to reunite with his former girlfriend Naomi because she was “nice.” Unfortunately for Joel, and for the audience, all thought of the never glimpsed Naomi is arrested by the intrusion of a life destroying force named Clementine (Winslet). When Joel and Clementine first notice each other in a restaurant, Joel wonders to himself why he falls in love with every woman that shows him the least amount of attention. It’s a revealing query because it lets the audience know that Joel recognizes his needy behavior and is struggling to overcome it. But he’s no match for the wild-eyed gaze of Clementine Kruczynski, who sizes up her prey and moves in for the kill with glomming precision. With dyed blue hair and barbed conversation Clementine flirts with Joel on a train headed for Moutauk. Joel keeps his guard up against Clementine’s ground rules for

Jim Carrey’s eternal confusion conversation but eventually succumbs to offering her a ride when he sees her walking away from the train station. In short order Clementine beds Joel with no pretense of mutual attraction before luring him out to the middle of a frozen lake that comes to represent the frozen emotional water she will soon sink him in. We’re suddenly lunged forward to time after Joel and Clementine have lived together long enough for her to so tire of his “boring” qualities that she has had all memory of him erased from her brain by dubious psychiatrist Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). When the helpless Joel discovers Clementine’s cruel disassociation he traces her course and enlists to have the same memory erasing done to rid himself of any recollection of her. Joel is soon sat upon in his apartment by the doctor’s trio of slacker technicians who begin a memory wiping process that enables the filmmakers to set up all sort of jarring imagery and dreamscape situations wherein Joel attempts to protect his memories of Clementine and retain their painful relationship. The memory wiping procedure is a major stumbling block for the film because there isn’t a cohesive tone or comic rhythm to support the level of irreverent humor it implies. We’re not in Woody Allen land, but rather some sludgy and painful emotional nightmare with no light at the end of the tunnel. If none of this sounds funny or interesting that’s because it isn’t. The look of the movie is maudlin and dark, and by the time the audience is pulling for Joel to break free of the memory inquisition he’s imposed on himself we find ourselves questioning the insanity of every character in the movie - including Joel. I’m not saying you have to be crazy to identify with the wrongheaded characters in Eternal Sunshine but that you have to be vested in the necessary suffering of relationships between incompatible people. Forget that. Rated R - 108 mins. MTW

Photos The DJ Schedule at Casanova, 9:30 p.m.; Gone Wild! Thursday Friday at Hapa’s, 10 p.m.

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Livewire Café, Paia

This is the beginning of a photography exhibit called “This Wild Life” that will feature the work of L.A. photographer Jason Ellis and his focus on black and white lifestyle images, as well as South African Brent Harris’ photos of wildlife. The evening also features the incredible jazz-alicious Mark Johnston and his band, as well as the inherently charming wildlife of Paia Town.

DJ Lorin—a.k.a. Bassnectar—returns with his “deep, lush breaks, glitch-hop and bhangrainfluenced hip-hop” on Thursday, at Casanova. And Hapa features two rooms of music and dancing with DJs John Howard, Daniel J, Ed V, Nanda, Kidd, Modika and Sal on Friday. Now see, THIS is what I’m talking about! Two great, separate nights of DJ delight—good job, guys! Gone are the evenings of Maui’s all-or-nothing nightlife! Gone are the days of running from one side of the island to the next in a useless attempt to see it all or staying in one place and missing out on something great that was booked at the same time! Gone are the endless tales from your friends about the cool show they saw while you committed to the other, which turned out to be so very anticlimactic!… Oh wait, the spectacular Memorial Day Weekend Drag Races start on Friday?! Kris Kristofferson, too? And the Maui Waena Intermediate School Band spring concert’s on Thursday? Aw, geez…

Canoe Celebration, cont’d. Thursday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Banyan Tree Park, Lahaina Yep, there’s still master canoe carving, Hawaiian drum making and surfboard shaping going on, as well as live music and cultural lectures celebrating canoes and Polynesian culture, in general. Thursday features an ‘Awa lecture at 10 a.m., the music of Kalani Smythe at 11 a.m. and a lecture on Ancient Hawaiian Weapons at 12:30 p.m. Friday has Kaleo & Friends performing at 11 a.m., the Parade of Canoes at 6 p.m. and a Hawaiian Music Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday’s ceremonial launch of canoes is at 6 p.m., with the Ho’olaule’a festival following. Sunday takes the Ocean Voyage Procession to Canoe Beach at 9 a.m. and a lecture of Hawaiian Sliding Sports at 11 a.m. at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. For info on lectures, call 661-1959 or for the Event Hotline, call 667-9194.

week’s picks by Sam Campos

Meet Da Braddahs, Nuffsedd Friday, 9:45 p.m. at Casanova James Roche and Tony Silva are two local kine braddahs that like make you laugh. In fact, they are the Hawaiian Islands’ comedic darlings, the notoriously nutty, Da Braddahs. Their TV show ‘Da Braddahs and Friends’ plays every night at 8:30 except Mondays on OC16 Hawaii Television and they have several videos depicting their unique characterizations—from a crazed microphone carrying Don Ho to Samoan father and son tree trimmers and their infamous “two insipid and hapless cops.” Plus, you get the bonus of seeing Nuffsedd perform upbeat, sweet island rhythms. This evening has Date Night written all over it! Hmm… contemporary Hawaiian music and two cross-eyed men in fake teeth and dresses—now what could be more romantic?

Fentwhistle and Syllabub Saturday, 11 a.m. at 2027 Main Street, Wailuku In honor of the Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ production entitled “In Other Words”—and also in order to not tick them off anymore—I am going to print their press blurb, in their words: “Join Professor Fleetfoot and his madcap friends, Tom Althouse, Ishiah Morrey, and Steven Nicholas, on a zany exploration of communication. The acting ensemble transforms itself from the alphabet to geese honking southward to a string quartet. As Baby discovers her first word, Gunkymuck, head cave person, discovers words! This hilarious show ends with Adolphus Ignatius Fentwhistle, who only talks, and Sylvia Syllabub, who only dances, learning how to find common ground to communicate with each other. For more information please contact MAPA at 244-8760 or www.mauiacademy.org. Tickets can be purchased directly from MAPA, please call early as seating is limited. Prices for Adults $7 (MAPA members $5); Youth under 12, $5 (MAPA members $3).” Thank you.

SUMMER WORK

ARIES: Get to the heart of writer’s block and communication breakdowns. Family matters continue to be of maximum importance. Wednesday night’s full moon inspires a walk on the beach or a view from a high mountain vista. TAURUS: Discover what it is that makes you naturally so rich. Celebrate your favorite foods. Be aware of touch and tactile sensations. The full moon highlights your libido, other people’s property and telepathic connections. Sometimes you need to let go. GEMINI: You’re back in your prime. Love is here for the taking. Creative shifts just can’t be avoided. You’ve got the tools you need to do your thing. The full moon highlights peace making, partnerships, romances and commitments. CANCER: It’s the “Pandora’s Box” time of the year where you never know what will come up next. You’re still recovering from last week’s drama—be easy on yourself. The full moon focuses on health issues, charitable causes and providing a service. LEO: Life’s future possibilities are on your mind. This is a great time to attend parties and share your ideas with friends both familiar and new. Confront the secrets that you’d rather not tell. The full moon promotes your creativity and your generosity. VIRGO: Sometimes you need to wear a uniform and perform an unpleasant job. Other times you’re called on to expand upon a story. Commit yourself to your favorite talents. The full moon asks you to be grateful for the work of your ancestors. LIBRA: Imagine yourself as a peaceful explorer in a wild land. Allow every experience you have to be an education. Music, art and culture take on exotic tones. Leading and teaching require patience. The full moon brings lively communication and poetic expressions. SCORPIO: You’re in the arena of risky love and frisky urges. Letting go and not obsessing is crucial. Drop what’s hurting you like a nasty habit. Accept help from others. The full moon has you at the crossroads of the material and the spiritual as well as the sensual and the sexual. SAGITTARIUS: Having a comfortable distance from the latest drama is not bringing the typically smug look that I find on your face. You seem to know the meaning of having compassion for the enemy. The full moon puts your persona on center stage. It’s in Sagittarius. CAPRICORN: Everything requires negotiations and agreements. You may find yourself pleading for a charitable cause. Service-oriented work is the “soup du jour.” The full moon concentrates on the karma you’ve created for yourself over the last several months. AQUARIUS: Fortify all of your highest aspirations. Bring a sense of beauty through service. Allow your heart to be warmed. The more playful you can be, the better it will be for all of us. The full moon lights up your social life. It’s safe to party again. PISCES: Your intuition has been activated. You’re focused on the “dream” time. Imagination and visions flood your path with emotion. Relationships are either good or bad because that special person reminds you of your parent. The full moon spotlights talents.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

When the past comes back to slap you on the forehead A couple weeks ago, my old high school buddies Dena and Alex tracked me down via email after more than a decade of absence. Back then Dena was my dangerously beautiful, cunning, mischievous, punk girlfriend whom I used to sneak away with to cruise the nightclubs and bars of L.A. with our fake IDs. And Alex was my wise old soul, an imaginative and witty gothic pal with whom I would have late night phone calls in the dark to contemplate life, love and the pursuit of ghostly pallor. Now, I’m looking at pictures of Dena’s dangerously beautiful son, her two cunning homes in South Africa and Seattle, and her mischievous new Mercedes Benz, which sits next to her very non-punk Land Rover in her snow-covered driveway. Alex, on the other hand, is a wise old furniture warehouse manager in the Bay Area, happily married to his equally imaginative and witty wife Eerie and doing cool zombie cabaret stuff on the weekends. Seriously—zombie cabaret! Check it out at www.zombiepinups.com. As if that wasn’t enough, last week my first Maui boyfriend Will suddenly after several years of non-contact called me from Sacramento. He is currently wrestling with the stress and pressures of the high costs of living and property ownership, as well as the high demands of girlfriends. I convinced him that we have none of that here on Maui. Evil me. Also last week, while I was enjoying tailgate parties and moshing at an all-ages metal/punk show, my pregnant friend Amy was at the Seabury Hall Craft Fair watching the Doobie Bros. Then she and her boyfriend Randall went to see a midwife, after which they attended a Kenny Loggins concert with all the other mothers on Mom’s Day. And BJ, TBB and I went to a baby shower for tattooed beauty Heather at Baldwin Beach, organized by her also-expecting sister Megan. Are all of these events culminating in some big message that I should be paying attention to? Oh, the river of denial runs deep. Just about every night at the Sugar Shack, my fabulous roommates Jen and Sonja hold ultra-fabulous after-hours parties featuring the crème de la crème of Lahaina’s bar-closing patrons. Generally, they involve a lot of alcohol and cigarettes, with stilettoed Jen entertaining the troops in the living room while Sonja cooks up some drunken gourmet something or other—like macaroni and cheese or grilled ham sandwiches—in the kitchen. I know this only because when I leave for work in the morning, there’s evidence surrounding the casualties and unknown shoes at the door. Sometimes even a cowboy hat or two. And so, on that Friday night after Kim, Sasha, TBB, BJ and I went to see Lyrics Born at Hapa’s in Kihei, I thought nothing of bragging to my upcountry friends about one of these parties that would surely be happening back at the Shack. The hip-hop show was awesome— especially petite vocalist with a roar Joyo Velarde—but it didn’t start until midnight so we were all still a bit adrenaline-pumped when the nightclub closed. And I thought that, finally, I would be up late enough to participate in one of these late-night happenings AND I could even contribute my own band of carousers. But when Sasha, Kim and I showed up at the Shack, Jen was uncharacteristically passed out in her bed while Sonja was still finishing her last shift bartending at Hecocks. The house was dark and quiet. Where was all the smoke and laughter? Where were the chatty people I usually have to kick out of the bathroom when I take my 4 a.m. pee? What happened to the Rolling Stones sing-a-long? “Here I am!” I called out. “I’m ready now!” Horror of horrors, my poor friends who drove all the way from Kihei and would have to drive all the way back to Haiku then arrived to see me and my neighbor’s nearly empty bottle of tequila, looking very perplexed and apologetic in the middle of my stupidly empty living room. The next night, after I dropped off Sonja at the airport for a birthday trip to Las Vegas, I went to Charley’s in Paia. In a somewhat somber mood, I slowly sipped my beer and listened to Lawai’a. They sounded great but their song selections—Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight,” CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?”—were further intensifying my melancholy state. So I went to the SandBar to see my chums from the Cafeteria— Platelunch, Terms, Mole, Body Holliday—rock the house. And just to add insult to injury, when I returned home at 3 a.m., there was a full party raging at the Sugar Shack. Of course. The attendees, looking all kinds of guilty and wide-eyed, looked at me with trepidation as if I was about to bust their gig. “Where the hell were you all LAST NIGHT?!” I asked. I went to bed sulking yet disturbingly validated. MTW
