I bought the gifts in Thailand and it took three months for the box to get here. Plus I added more goodies to the box because I love my beautiful darling daughter. I was ready to mail it to Europe where she lives with her mother, when I found the box was gone. I hope the person who took the package will read the birthday card inside the box and have the urge to return the box to the sender’s address. ‘No Clinical Benefit’
Nothing to See Here
Why one doctor just says no to drug reps When a doctor prescribes a drug for some ailment, it’s natural for the patient to assume the physician thought through all the available drugs and chose one that would work the fastest with the least number of side effects and, if possible, not cost too much money. In the U.S. today, that vision is just about pure fantasy. In fact, big drug companies are spending billions of dollars trying to steer doctors towards their newest and most expensive drugs. With prescription drug costs now rising at three times the rate of inflation, it seems the companies are succeeding. Standing in opposition is the group No Free Lunch. Now in its fifth year, the New York City-based group urges doctors and medical students to turn away drug company reps. The group’s website nofreelunch.org even has a pledge asking doctors to agree to turn away drug company marketing reps and stop accepting the samples and freebies they bring with them. I recently spoke with Dr. Edwin Montell, who signed the No Free Lunch pledge. A noted gastroenterologist who’s practiced in Hilo for the past 26 years, Montell is an outspoken critic of drug company marketing practices: Maui Time: Why did you sign the No Free Lunch pledge? Montell: This is a subject near and dear to my heart. Generally, escalating costs of medical care are important to everyone. One factor is clearly pharmaceutical costs: They’re up 20 percent a year. We need to look at how to restrain costs without depriving people of needed medication. Something’s wrong with the way doctors are analyzing drugs. I’d like to see more thoughtful prescribing based on a scientific basis. How does prescribing actually work? Let me give you an example. There are a group of drugs that are very effective in treating acid reflux disease. One of those is Prilosec. A couple years ago, Prilosec was close to losing its patent protection [which would dramatically lower its cost]. The company that manufactures Prilosec then stopped promoting it and started promoting Nexium. It even began billing it as “the other purple pill”—the first purple pill being Prilosec. They shifted 20 percent market share to Nexium, but Nexium has virtually no benefit over Prilosec. In fact, Prilosec is essentially Nexium. There is no clinical benefit to this. But it’s promoted to doctors, who get lots of samples. Now they’re advertising Nexium as “the number one [protein pump inhibitor](PPI) prescribed by gastroenterologists.” It’s a $4 pill, but customers can get the same drug for 70 cents at Costco. I’ve read that the pharmaceuti-

of conduct. This produced a subtler shift— “come to San Francisco to consult for us. We’ll pay your expenses, pay you $2,000, but we want you to consult for us.” What do you mean “consult?” You end up spending a couple hours looking at marketing materials. That gives it legitimacy. Now they say they want you to participate in research—in Palm Springs. I’ll tell you what is even more subtle: Most continuing medical education, which law and professionalism requires us to do, is drug-company sponsored. They will bring out great guests—really reputable speakers. But they already know what the people are going to say. They don’t bring out someone to talk about Prilosec—they bring out the guy who does Nexium. By shaping speakers, they shape the message. It is brilliant! I really admire their cleverness—I wish I’d bought stock in them 20 years ago.
Dr. Edwin Montell cal industry spends something like $15 billion each year marketing directly to doctors. Yes. Lipitor, made by Pfizer, has 65 reps in the state of Hawaii calling on doctors. Many doctors believe the pharmaceutical industry’s marketing habits have no effect on them, but most of them, interestingly enough, believe that it affects others. I find it difficult to believe profit-making companies pour these kinds of dollars into marketing if there’s no impact. I do think we are blind to this. Part of it is we’re busy, pressed for time.
What about drug samples? One major reason that doctors see reps is to obtain samples. This is a noble goal—they want to get drugs for people who can’t afford them. I don’t take samples, but I’m not critical of why doctors take samples. The problem is that it promotes the use of the most expensive drugs. Sampling is a way of getting people hooked on high-priced, brand name drugs. The problem isn’t the drug reps. They’re good people, but they’re sales people. My colleagues listen to these reps like they were medical professionals. The drug reps go to sales meetings and the companies pump them full of so much information. I think they’re sincere in believing their drug is truly the best. But it’s the drug companies that I have issues with. I feel bad that I won’t sit down and have coffee with the reps, but I’m afraid of getting influenced. MTW
What have drug reps offered you? They’ll say something like “Why don’t you come to San Francisco. You can bring the wife, go to the Giants game, get in a round of golf and we’ll pay for your air fare and then you can come to a meeting in the morning.” These companies do beautiful work, they’re so good at what they’re doing. But I never took pens, pencils, books, trips. I never did anything that I would be embarrassed to let my patient know about. And this is considered normal? Up to 1991, 1992, there was no code of conduct for the pharmaceutical companies. They gave out golf trips, trips to other islands, tickets to sporting events, dinners, all in exchange for a one-hour talk. But then the companies introduced a code

It is with great sorrow that I report the official Maui County Department of Liquor Control’s website (http://liquorcontrol.maui.hi.us) has been gone silent. In fact, it hasn’t been updated since at least late April. The site still sports a nifty telephone directory, all the liquor statutes and rules but it used to be so much better and informative. It always posted the upcoming agendas for both Liquor Commission and Adjudication Board meetings, and always at least a couple weeks in advance—a superb way for members of the public to get informed on the upcoming hearings. But now, about all that’s really interesting on the site is a monster disclaimer that takes up nearly half the homepage: “Information is provided on this site in an as is and as available basis… While every effort is made to provide useful information, the Department do not warrant the information to be authoritative, complete, final, factual, timely or accurate… Users are cautioned that any conclusions which they may draw from information obtained from this site are their own and are not to be attributed to the Department of Liquor Control, County of Maui.” Interestingly enough, the LC website never included the department newsletter Booze Clues. In fact, just one issue of that must-read has been posted anywhere— February, 2004—and that’s at the main Maui County website. I’d tell you how to get its updates on “tax clearances for liquor license renewals,” “2004 ID Checking Guide” and promotion lists for all your favorite LC officers, but it requires navigating an online route so circuitous I don’t remember how I found it in the first place. And that’s a damn shame, because any newsletter titled Booze Clues has to be good. In any case, in response to an email asking for comment, LC deputy director Wayne Pagan wrote that “The commission and adjudication board agendas will only be posted on the following web site: www.co.maui.hi.us/departments/liquor.” And that would be great news, except at press time clicking on that link led to a “File Not Found” error. LOCALNEWS MONDAY, MAY 24 Recognizing historic achievement in historic preservation, the Historic Hawaii Foundation awarded its Preservation Honor Award to historian Dawn Duensing and the Maui County Department of Public Works and Environmental Management for their historic work honoring the preservation of the Hana Highway. The Foundation noted that Duensing “increased community knowledge and pride in a unique historical resource.” And it’s a been a long time coming—according to today’s Maui News, “[s]everal bridges along the Hana Highway were the subject of community protests over plans to replace them with modern structures over the past five years.” Yes, several bridges… like the extremely narrow 1911vintage Paihi Bridge in Wailua between Hana and Kipahulu that The Maui News wrote about Sunday that is “too badly deteriorated to be salvaged” and will undoubtedly be torn down? Or don’t the bridges from Hana count?… For those of you who like to hike in cool, rain-soaked “bogs and cloud forests” and happen to have $1,100 lying around gathering dust, you might want to consider applying for one of the slots in this year’s big Pu’u Kukui Nature Walk this September. Access to the biologically diverse and delicate preserve is strictly prohibited by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company, but one day each year they company opens up its bogs and to 11 lucky people wealthy and healthy enough to handle and all-day hike along 2-mile long, 18-inch wide boardwalk down Mauna Kahalawai that’s accessible only by helicopter. According to a press release on the hike we got today, applicants should be at least 18 and in good physical condition. They should also be prepared to survive the

day solely on a bento lunch packed by Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Oh, the sacrifices nature lovers have to make.
TUESDAY, MAY 25 Former Maui County mayor and current Hawaii state governor Linda Lingle managed to shove her foot in her mouth thrice—that’s three separate times, people!—when interviewed by the Associated Press about our fearless leader George W. Bush’s Iraq speech last night. For simplicity’s sake, let’s take her sloppy thinking in chronological order. First, she said the U.S. is absolutely right to stomp all over Iraq because “if we’re not going to fight terrorism there, we’re going to have to fight it here at home.” Oh, so all those old Baath Party “deadenders” in the so-called Sunni Triangle and the radical Shiite militia dug into holy cities like Najaf would be marching up Main Street if we didn’t deploy our legions? Then Lingle said Bush was right to “temper” expectations that we would turn Iraq into a democracy: “[But] he’s said that from the beginning.” Actually, Governor, Bush and his advisers relied on the lies of convicted criminals like Ahmed Chalabi—who we’re now trying to hound out of the office we put him in— to tell the Iraqis and the world that we would put a full Western parliament in Baghdad. Lastly, incomprehensibly, Lingle defended Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who’s under fire for allegedly authorizing a secret program allowing the military and private contractors to violate the 1923 Geneva Conventions and torture suspected terrorists and insurgents—which is a war crime—by saying “He’s done an excellent job… You certainly don’t change the secretary of defense in the middle of a war.” Look, it should be clear to everyone by now that the American occupation of Iraq is a bloody disaster. Considering that saying absolutely nothing is a perfectly acceptable option, Lingle’s decision to handcuff herself to the war is baffling.

Now this is normally the point where I’d tell you where Kellie was planning on going to school and how she’s planning on making her special contribution to society, but Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship winner Kellie R. Holliday didn’t come in for work today, the slacker.

The whole country’s getting rattled over increasingly dire warnings from think tanks and government officials that there are something like 18,000 Al Qaeda dudes out there and they want to hit us “hard” oh, say, sometime this summer and maybe this time they’ll use one of them new-fangled Dirty Bombs we keep hearing about, and what does our good governor say about all these terror warnings? “It probably will play to Hawaii’s benefit,” she told the Associated Press. That’s right, she said— expect a nice tourist spike as Americans trade their international travel packages for a couple tickets to our islands. “[P]eople will continue to see us as a safe place to go,” she added, assuming of course that by “people,” she did not mean “our Godless Enemies who would maim and mur-
Speaking of our people making good, former Maui Time graphic designer Scott Johnson won his very first Na Hoku award this week for his cover artwork on fellow winner Keali’i Reichel’s big album Ke’alaokamaile. “I’m floored by the whole experience,” Johnson told me today, four days after his win. “I don’t know why I won.” A Maui resident for the past 8 years, Johnson is originally from San Diego, California. He says he gets his inspiration from his peers, music, friends, family and “kids doing creative things. Anything, everything. And Keali’i—I’m hugely inspired by this man”… Picking up the terror ball Governor Lingle dropped the other day, Honolulu FBI Special Agent in Charge Charles Goodwin told the AP that more than simply an increased number of tourists might come to Hawaii this summer. “Everybody knows the strategic importance of Honolulu and this state,” he said, saying the islands’ proximity to the Philippines might attract the attention of terrorists. Got it, but seriously, what the hell is going on here? Should we fear the terrorists or the tourists? Will people come here to throw bombs, or because Hawaii is the bomb? Anyone? And more importantly, what is the relevance of the press release I just got marked urgent and announcing that the GNC store in the Lahaina Cannery Mall is “under new management?”

In May, in the latest blooming of the lawyers’ class-action money tree, California law firms asked a court to approve $258 million in fees for their handling of a lawsuit against Microsoft Corp., amounting to $3,000 an hour for the lead attorney (who billed for 6,000 hours of his own time, even though three dozen lawyers from more than 30 firms had a piece of the case) and $1,000 an hour for administrative work, all for the following consumer bonanza: Each victim will get a coupon worth $5 to $29 toward the purchase of another Microsoft product.
Until March, Mr. Dayn Riegel and his girlfriend kept 77 cats in their house in Lawrenceville, Ga., but a Humane Society spokesman said he saw no problem, in that all appeared to be in good health and wellfed, and Riegel’s home was clean (though filled with litter boxes). Riegel recorded each cat’s history on a computer database, provided one packaged meal and one special meal a day for each, and turned over 60 pounds of cat litter a week.
FINER POINTS OF THE LAW In April, a judge in Ocala, Fla., sentenced a 27-year-old man to probationonly for having sex with his then-girlfriend’s rottweiler (with the man admitting that he had a “lifelong problem”) and lamented that under state law, the man could not be forced to register as a sex offender, since the victim was a dog.
EVEN MONSTERS NEED HELP Sweden’s Parliamentary Ombudsmen’s office in Stockholm recently discovered that in 1986 a regional environmental court in Jaemtland province had denied a resort-development permit to a builder on the ground that the Loch Ness-resembling “Storsjoe monster” (serpentlike body, catlike head, first rumored in 1635) often “sighted” there had been declared endangered. Declared the ruling, “(I)t is prohibited to kill, hurt or catch animals of the Storsjoe monster species” or to “take away or hurt the monster’s eggs, roe or den.”
GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Fifty countries (including Japan) have now banned American beef because of inadequate mad-cow controls, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture has not only declined to order widespread testing but has even prohibited one farm, Creekstone (Campbellsburg, Ky.), from voluntarily testing. USDA said such conscientious testing would imply that America’s entire 35 million yearly slaughters should be tested (which the industry says is too expensive, even though Japan requires universal testing for its beef). USDA said it aims to test only 40,000 cows, up from 20,000 for the last two years (although it has been unable for nine months now to document those tests).
PEOPLE WITH ISSUES New Hampshire state Rep. John Kerns resigned in February while on the verge of expulsion for, among other things, writing “State of New Hampshire” on some personal checks (later dishonored) to feign officialness and for threatening violence after unsuccessfully demanding a private parking space. He appeared at one court hearing wearing a black cape to, as he said, improve his credibility as a defendant. Also, presidential candidate Robert Haines, 57, of New Hampshire, was arrested while campaigning in Virginia in April after he threatened to kill a police dog over a parking ticket dispute; last year, at a Dartmouth College football game, Haines tried to “throw out the first football” (which is only done in baseball).

The opportunity for most of us to own a home on Maui is slipping through our fingers like sand with each passing sunset. Paying a monthly mortgage instead of rent in Hawaii has become a sandcastle dream for many, with housing on Maui consisting of more than a single room costing more than $500,000. How did this become “affordable?” In the U.S. and around the world, the recognized financial figure for affordable housing should take no more than 30 percent of a person’s income. Paying more risks not meeting basic needs like food and medical care. This is especially tragic considering that our government can create the conditions that would establish the necessities for human survival such as assistance in locating truly affordable housing. Non-profit organizations like Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) are trying to pick up the slack, but only government can eliminate the hardship. Instead, local officials have spent the last five decades ensuring that construction of luxury homes and resorts takes precedence over housing for the maids and gardeners who will one day care for those dwellings. No question, we have to organize. It will take the initiative of individuals organizing collectively in citizen campaigns for social justice. At least there are national and international efforts that can provide assistance. Habitat for Humanity is an amazing example of taking action to make sure that everyone who wants to own a home can own a home. But since 1989, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty has focused on providing an opportunity for self-sufficiency and an end to houselessness in America. The Law Center won a landmark case concerning homeless children to be able to attend school. This resulted in a nationwide 40 percent rise in the number of homeless children regularly attending school. Because of this, the next generation will have the skills and schooling to improve their lives. Another victory requires vacant federal properties to be made available for homeless people. It enforces the law allowing conversion of vacant properties including closed military bases into housing, job training, childcare and food sites serving more than 110,000 people annually. Somehow we’ve forgotten that housing is a human right. Throughout the history of the U.S. and the world, it’s been understood that human security is rooted in housing for the citizens. You can go back to 1937 and 1949 to find federal housing laws that expressed an ideal for Americans who recognized that people need assistance.
Even this is too expensive Today, we now require binding legislation to realize this right. Housing advocates in America are working in coordination with other human rights organizers to reframe the issue facing human beings. They’re trying to achieve the progressive realization of assisting our citizens as required in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). The global community is arriving at standards through human rights covenants and world conferences to mobilize citizens to demand minimum standards in housing. “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care,” reads the 25th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Then there’s ICESCR article 11, paragraph one, which “recognize[s] the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing.” The Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlement and the Habitat Agenda includes language establishing the right to adequate housing as well as state obligations to ensure the progressive realization of this right. Such guidelines have been determined by international experts who believe the right to housing includes affordability, adequacy, accessibility, security of tenure in residency and basic infrastructure. We can start using this language to frame our actions on Maui. It can serve as a benchmark in our efforts to guarantee housing for those growing up in Hawaii. But most importantly, we need to push current housing based on these criteria to our local officials. They, in turn, need to press resort and land developers to build the affordable housing elements they’re required to take on to get their projects approved. Hawaii can be a partner in connecting housing with other human rights issues to improve the livelihood of people living here. MTW

KingofScratch Turntable master innovator, DJ Qbert Anyone who knows anything about hip-hop knows Qbert. A two-time Technics DMC DJ world-champion and lifetime achievement award winner in ’98, Qbert is widely considered the most technically skilled DJ in existence. He is the co-founder of the innovative Bay Area scratch crew, Invisibl Skratch Pickles. And he’s a key player in the acclaimed 2002 hip-hop DJ documentary, Scratch. Qbert has also orchestrated an animated hiphop movie called Wave Twister, a Do It Yourself DVD on scratching, gotten his own Playstation 2 “Frequency” video game, he is featured on an Apple commercial, has a CD in a children’s book entitled Turntable Timmy and is currently designing new DJ technology in Japan. And he has a car called the Kutmobil, a customized Land Rover that has been hailed as being “The World’s Only Skratch Transport System.” So it’s natural to wonder if he ever engages in a little scratch-and-drive. “I’ve never done that in my life,” said Qbert rather responsibly. “I park and I practice in my car.”
The act of spinning records for the public has been around since the 1940s, when the first DJs emerged to entertain the troops overseas. But the practice didn’t really start developing until 1969. That was when pioneering DJ Kool Herc introduced the “break” by chanting over short percussion portions of a record and extending them using two identical records and an audio mixer. Six years later, Grand Wizard Theodore discovered the “scratch” by moving the record back and forth against the needle to produce new sounds. By the early 1980s, Grandmaster Flash was one of the first DJs to create “breakbeats” by extending grooves and looping the “breaks” of certain songs turntable to turntable. It was just a few years later that Dance Music Community (DMC) began holding annual battles, testing the scratching and cutting skills of DJs worldwide. By the time Qbert came onto the scene, the idea of a turntablist was defined by the International Turntablist Federation (ITF) as “One who uses the phonograph turntable as a component to make music as well as an instrument to literally play music.” Qbert caught the attention of the industry by bringing a very musical aspect to the turntable, incorporating actual melodies into his style of scratching. “Qbert has thousands of breaks but with rhythm,” said Maui’s DJ Twist. “As far as turntablism goes, Qbert is incomparable—no one can even come close!” Such acclaim for Qbert is pretty typical. “He’s probably one of the most amazing

scratch DJs ever!” said 8-ball, a promoter of hip-hop shows with Mecurial Bull Productions. “I’ve seen him live and he really gets into the groove and lets go!” “If you start DJing and getting exposed to the realm of DJing, you’re gonna hear about Qbert,” said DJ Boomshot. “He is the head cornerstone, the top rock on the pyramid.” “He’s a household name,” said DJ Sal. “He’s infamous in the DJ world.” No kidding—He’s even been called the “modern day Picasso of sound waves” by Iris DeLeon of Access Magazine. “My advice—do not show this guy your scratch that you found and developed ‘cause he will take that and understand it so much more than you have,” said Qbert’s business partner, Yogafrog, in Scratch. “He’s like the Louis Armstrong of scratching!”
Richard Quitevis has been spinning records since he was four or five years old with his plastic Fisher Price turntable. He said he got the name “Qbert” not only because of the popular Atari game of the same name but also from being a “short and fat little guy” whose last name started with a Q. However, according to an interview with the Chillsbury Do-Boy from Vinyl Exchange, that’s not the name Qbert would have chosen for himself. “I wanted it to be something like… fuckin’… Ripclaw, or fuckin’… I don’t know, some space name or some shit,” said Qbert. “But then, that was what everybody called me back then all the time and so it stuck.” Qbert was heavily influenced by jazz and easily drew comparisons to its freeform time signatures and diverse styles to scratching. He was also exposed to the varied skills of “beat juggling” with such luminaries as Mix Master Mike, DST from Herbie Hancock and Joe Cooley. From that, Qbert’s own style developed strongly into “playing the turntable like a musical instrument. “With the hip-hop bass, you know, I love hip-hop drums to scratch to, funky drums,” he told me. “And I like to drum on the turntables, I like to play guitar on the turntables—scratch all kinds of instruments on the turntable.” His primary motivation? That would be aliens.
“Since earth is kinda like a primitive planet, what about the more advanced civilizations? How does their music sound?” Qbert asked. “So I would imagine whatever they’re doing and I guess that’s how I come up with my ideas.” As Qbert said in the documentary Scratch, “It’s kinda like talking, you know, you just speak what you’re saying. The more techniques you know—it’s like each technique is a word, so the larger your vocabulary, the more articulate you can speak.”
Looking back at all of his accomplishments, I tried to determine just how many DJ gigs Qbert has performed in his illustrious career. Let’s see, he’s been DJing since 1985—that’s almost 20 years—with at least a couple of gigs a week, so like, wow… that’s nearly 1,920 nights out scratching in front of thousands of screaming fans all over the world, right? Right? “I really, really try to stay home and work and I love being in Hawaii and I love just scratching at the beach,” he told me. Oh, right. He’s also recently invented a new portable turntable and mixer combination that looks like a UFO, so it’s called a “QFO,” as well as an international turntablist video magazine that can be viewed online at www.turntabletv.com. “What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about the whole art of DJing?” I asked Qbert over the phone. “Uh, that there’s more to learn forever,” he said. “I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to always practice and to always continue to hone your skills. There’s a saying—‘Those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ You know, just be the kind of quiet guy that always works on the under and let your work speak for itself, I guess.” And it does. A buddy of mine and I were in Paia Town the other morning. It was early, there were still a few puddles near the curb from a recent shower and we were both hungry. But where to eat? So many options, so many choices… “Let’s go to Milagros,” said my friend. “Okay,” I said. Located in the Paia Town Center building on the corner of Baldwin and Hana Highway, Milagros is a great little Southwestern-style café with tables along the sidewalk and a bar inside. The breakfast menu is simple and straightforward. Naturally, my eyes drifted to the pancakes section. They’ve got pancakes with bananas, macadamia nuts, blueberries and whipped cream. In fact, they all have whipped cream. I suppose you could ask for plain pancakes without any whipped cream, but in this topsy-turvy world of international terrorism, wi-fi bubbles and a resurgent Scott Baio film career, who would want to settle for just plain old pancakes? Alas, I wasn’t in a pancakes mood. The menu’s a solid amalgam of feel-good food such as the whipped cream pancakes, hippy stuff like smoothies and fairly standard Mexican fare like breakfast burritos and Huevos Rancheros. My friend had the breakfast burrito. I opted for the Farm Fajitas. “Great choices,” the server told us. We sat back and indulged in a bit of people watching. “I don’t see any hippies this morning,” my friend said, looking up and down Baldwin. “Nope.” There were plenty of tourists in rain suits and motorcycle helmets riding rental mountain bikes to the Baldwin/Hana intersection, but no hippies. “The rain must have washed them away,” he said. “Or maybe they’re fair weather hippies who can’t get their cell phones wet.” Did I mention my friend doesn’t care for the hippies? Calls them “Daddy’s Little Deadheads.” Once, he even called me from the road to report a Daddy’s Little Deadhead sighting. “He’s sitting outside Border’s,” my friend told me breathlessly. “He’s leaning against the wall, charging his cell phone in one of those outside electrical outlets. He’s got the hemp clothes, backpack, dog and cup of coffee from Starbucks. He couldn’t even go inside and buy a cup of coffee from the little Border’s cafe.” Good times… but I was talking about Milagros. Like their killer sound system that piped plenty of music to the outside tables. For instance, we had no problem hearing the song “Ghetto.”
Great choice “Is that song still playing?” I asked after a while. “It’s been playing the whole time we’ve been sitting here,” my friend said. A few minutes later our server brought our food, which was nice as the place was still pretty quiet. “It seems everybody today is ordering these two plates,” she said cheerfully. I half expected one of them sizzling platters of eggs, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and cheese that you then spoon with some salsa into tortillas, but my Farm Fajitas came ready-made. There were two tortillas, each stuffed with what essentially amounted to an omelet, then folded and pinned at the base with a toothpick. On the side, there was plenty of delicious Spanish rice and black beans, along with some spicy mango salsa that was good eating on its own. My pal’s breakfast burrito was more conventional: Chorizo, eggs, black beans, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, enchilada sauce, cilantro. The cilantro was an added bonus, mostly because U.S. and Mexican researchers recently announced that the herb contains a dozen compounds that hold antibiotic properties. In fact, one of those compounds is called dodecenal, and researchers said it’s twice as effective against the dreaded Salmonella as the commonly used drug gentamicin. Not that there was anything harmful in the meal to worry about—I’m just saying that cilantro is one cool herb. “Oh it’s great,” my friend said of his burrito. “The chorizo’s not greasy, which is nice.” All in all, a solid morning. I came to Maui about eight years ago to study a particular style of Jujitsu under its originator. He lived Upcountry, so consequently that’s where I moved. I came to Maui with enough money to live for a while, but this being Maui, I was in the market for a job sooner than I had originally expected. Coincidentally at this time, Casanova was in need of a head chef. Needless to say, I’m still here. I have been cooking for as long as I can remember. My father is a chef in Milan, Italy, and my mother is from Peru. I grew up living my school years in Peru, amongst the bullies and terrorism. I spend my summers basking in the culinary epics of Europe, especially Italy. I started cooking with my father at an early age. I have been a chef in South America, Central America, as well as Miami, Reno and Las Vegas here in the States. The last place I worked before here was Nevada. I couldn’t have asked for a better next step in the progression of my life than Maui for both my studies as a chef and martial artist. I have always loved Italian cooking for its emphasis on fresh ingredients, which are readily available on this island—especially Upcountry. What makes Casanova such a unique Italian restaurant is that it is a fusion between the classic Italian cooking tradition and that of the Pacific Rim. Not only do I get to prepare traditional Italian dishes from scratch, but we blend them with the island ingredients like the savory fish from Nagasako and produce from local farmers. It’s a very creative process. As for the martial arts training, it’s all really alive here. I study many different styles, but Jujitsu and Kali are the two I am most involved with here. I have earned my blood belt in both of these styles, but I am nowhere near finished. I am an eternal student. There is always more to learn. MTW

Thomas on bass, Kotok on drums, Shayna on vocals and Hamilton on guitar Mateus Kotok has run the record label Indi Script from his Haiku house for five years now. “I use a sound booth I constructed out of mattresses,” he says. “You use four to five mattresses, one for each wall and one for the ceiling. It absorbs the reflection of sound. I recommend it for anyone looking to record music. You can also layer tapestries on it to make it look nice.” His other equipment includes a $200 microphone package and $500 box that plugs the mic into a computer and allows them to record almost unlimited tracks digitally. Kotok says he started Indi Script Records because “I’ve been playing music since I was four years old. Music is my life, but I don’t like the business. Corporations, industry and politicians own the record industry and promote their ideas… when someone promotes violence, sex, drugs and alcohol—whether they’re conscious of it or not—it’s only feeding the problem and not the solution.” With such simple equipment and good intentions, Indi Script Records has produced CDs for many local acts including Marty Dread, Sirus B, reggae hip-hop performer Kung Fu Sam, hip-hop poet Sarah Dawn and pop singer Tina Malia. Projects in the works include a pop-rock record with 10-year-old singer Eli Abrams. Kotok himself is forming a band with several 15-yearolds—including Abrams’ brother—called Skate Key. “It’s punk skate rock,” says the adult father of a five-year-old daughter. Kotok masterminded the new band Indicats “because live music is so important. People get lazy and live music is the only thing that can get their butts moving.” Memorial Day weekend, Indicats played a show during the Unity Festival held at Baldwin Beach. The lineup included Sirus B, Reggae for Real and Channel Live, among others. Upcountry resident and author Anthony Simmons organized

the get-together. People brought guacamole and what one guy called “the best banana bread on the island” to share. There was also an old-fashioned movie theater popcorn popper on hand for more free grub. Indicats are a four-piece band consisting of Kotok on drums and lead vocals, Tistrya Hamilton on guitar and vocals and Shayna and Thomas (neither wanted to give their last names) switching off on bass. With influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon to Bob Marley and hip-hop, their sound spans folk, rock, roots and reggae and can be hard to pin down into a simple genre. The band is only three months old, but Shayna and Kotok have been good friends for years, ever since Shayna rented a space in his attic in Seattle for $50 a month. She’s played guitar since she was 12, “but I always loved the bass and played the bass parts on my guitar.” Now as a mother of twins, Shayna switches off bass responsibilities with local musician Thomas, depending on whoever is most available and prepared at the time. Hamilton met the friends three months ago during a visit to Maui that turned into a long-term residence. She now lives with Kotok and his family. The band was formed when Kotok asked the two women to play their instruments for songs he had written. “What I like best about his songs are the lyrics,” says Hamilton. The song “Compassion” was written about a conversation they’d had regarding tough love and compassion. “He was saying compassion is boundless,” says Hamilton. “I believe if you’re putting others first and being selfless, you can’t really help anyone.” The lyrics they came up with? “When I’m walking on that path I hear them calling me/Angels of abundance, joy and love.” The Indicats will be touring the mainland June and July. Jigsaw Body Count How Reny Harlin matters Director Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea) ratchets up the gore for yet another twist on the traditional Hollywood slasher flick. An abandoned Navy Seals training complex on a remote island is the setting for a group of eight FBI serial killer profilers to prove their newly forged investigative skills to sadistic training supervisor Harris (Val Kilmer—Spartan). The group’s secluded practice weekend goes immediately awry when one of the skittish rookies walks into an elaborate booby trap that leaves him properly sliced and diced to pieces. Accusations swarm and tension mounts as the group’s number progressively dwindles at the unseen hand of a psychopath among them. The enjoyable cast includes Christian Slater, LL Cool J, Jonny Lee Miller, Kathryn Morris, Clifton Collins Jr., Will Kemp, Patricia Velasquez and Eion Bailey. Akin to last year’s Identity, Mindhunters is a murder mystery that’s nearly impossible for an audience to solve until the closing minutes of the movie. The film opens with a tense horror sequence that introduces two of the key players in a criminal capture situation that’s divulged to be a training event not unlike the extended exercise program that makes up the crux of the movie. The audience is lavished with a meticulous attention to detail that fills every inch of the screen.

Near Foodland
Set decorator Eliza Solesbury (Pearl Harbor) and Production Designer Charles Wood (The Italian Job) have a field day with cramming texture and depth into the film’s dense visual palette and industrial image system. There’s a claustrophobic joy available to audiences willing to go along with the knowing visual winks that the filmmakers toss out in every frame of the convoluted storyline. The same sense of plucky delight carries over into the cast, who comfortably settles into their ill-fated roles. Christian Slater (Very Bad Things) exhibits a pronounced pleasure in fulfilling a humorously flawed character responsible for setting the sardonic tone of the movie. Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) adds his signature flair for accents as a FBI professional with a weakness for romantic entanglement. Kathryn Morris (Minority Report) also does her fair share of pushing the suspense as an unsteady trainee forced to confront her worst fears. Mindhunters is an ensemble action suspense thriller that executes the heavy demands of its fast-paced script (by Wayne Kramer and Kevin Brodbin). Each san-
Sadistic Kilmer guinary sequence serves as a virtuosi vignette wherein the characters are compelled to exhibit their mettle before their demise. Reny Harlin keeps the pitch of the film dark and lonely, so that even at the end of the movie there’s a lump in your throat about the spectacle of comic horror you’ve witnessed. He presents a knowable/unknowable atmosphere that taunts the audience in a similar mode to the way Alfred Hitchcock toyed with his audiences. There’s a certain thrill in going to see a Reny Harlin movie because you know that you’re putting yourself in the hands of a master of the action genre. Harlin’s best film, The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), is a faultless example of the Finnish director’s distinct ability to milk character elements from the dramatic spectacle of action while still remaining true to an emotional theme. It’s interesting to note that Harlin was chosen by Warner Brothers to replace Paul Schrader on the upcoming Exorcist: The Beginning, for which Harlin is reshooting the entire movie, although Paul Schrader’s name will remain. Even Harlin’s past failures, such as Cutthroat Island (1995) and Driven (2001), carry a stamp of muscularity and momentum exerted over its subject that elevates the material. Reny Harlin may not carry the allure of an auteur like Quentin Tarantino, but he’s every bit as adventurous in putting fast twitch cinematic action on the screen in a lavish and elegant way. Now some people call Icke an investigative journalist. Other people call the former British soccer player and sportscaster a conspiracy theorist. And still others call him a nut. So which one is he? No, thanks—I’d rather hear a real musician with real talent play a real instrument and have to put that real effort out there every time they stepped up and not simply open up their laptop and hit play. Or, at least, I came from that school of thought until I heard the madness that this man orchestrated. In fact, he is madness maddened—the Ahab of DJs. And “orchestrated” is an understatement because he created almost every fiber of noise you hear on this album. Aphex would take apart televisions and reconfigure them to get the perfect “blip” or “wobble.” Or record slammed doors or junked pianolas—anything to find suitable building blocks for transcendent patterns of rhythm and melody that, while they could be considered downright disturbing at certain points, will bring tears to your eyes at others. RJD2 “DEADRINGER” I first saw this album where many of the best new albums can be seen for the first time: Other Music in NYC, back in the summer of 2002. I didn’t heed the many warnings telling me that this was the best album of the summer and only ended up hearing it one full year and 3500 air-land-and-sea miles later. That journey was well worth it and every subsequent journey has been even more dope with this mix to add to the soundtrack of my life. RJD2 has been one of the main magnets getting the progressive underground hip-hop label Def Jux such acclaim these days, although sometimes he’s left lending his sound to MCs that need to work on theirs. These grooves can handle more mass than Atlas and still rock any party around the globe. —Definitive Jux 2002
PREFUSE 73 “VOCAL STUDIES AND UPROCK NARRATIVES” For however mad Aphex is and however much groove RJD2 can conjure, Prefuse 73—a.k.a. Scott Herren—brings those qualities together, carving out a nasty lil’ niche between the two. I’d say that you’d better break in half the biscuit this man serves you and dip it into your sweet tea before ingesting, except that this southern gentleman has already done that for you so as not to disturb the relaxing rocking chair rhythms. Let me not make this sound too soft or simple, however, because he is indeed another devastating soldier of sound from the dirty south—he just manages to stay squeaky clean while constructing these towering tracks of quick-twitch reflex reaction—so chill, push play and cruise with satisfaction. —Warp Records 2001

“JUICE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK” It was this movie that showed my junior high suburban ass what DJing could be, back in the early ‘90s. Its was just what you played, but when you played it, what followed it and what you could do with while it was on to make it yours, to make it better. “Nuf Respect” is needed and some of the now godfathers of hip-hop came out on this soundtrack to show what that meant—like Big Daddy Kane, Too Short, EPMD. Coming from a time when the only name you’d hear next to Dr. Dre’s would be Ed Lover and R&B/hip-hop were still small enough and similar enough to be grouped together. While I’m glad the latter have gone their separate ways, I still have much love for the former pair and late-night education of “Yo! MTV Raps” [moment of silence]. —MCA Records 1991 Got Music? HOLOHOLOGIRL

Love won’t necessarily give you crabs I fell in love over the weekend. He was beautiful, a real head turner and stylish, in that modern classic kind of way. All muscle and attitude, he was sleek and kind of arrogant with a racy trim but man, did I want to crank his shaft. And yet, while I was busy checking out his rear bumper, a stockier specimen caught my eye. A little more vintage than I’m used to but this sizzlin’ hot rod nearly knocked me off my axle. Ah, torn between the ’64 Pontiac GTO and ’59 Chevy Apache Pickup… love is cruel. Such was the case at the 8th Annual George “Flintstone” Andrade Memorial Day Weekend Drag Races at Maui Raceway Park. Sure I had a swell time sweatin’ it out under the hot, burning sun, drinking my frosty cold one—okay, three—and munching my hot dog and ogling all those glamorous racing beauties. But at the end of the day, I happily returned to my one and only true love—Rocky, my muddy ‘ol ’89 Jeep Wrangler with the three inch lift and the 32-inch tires that really should be replaced. Is it wrong to harbor such feelings for a car? Does this mean that I am a material girl living, as it were, in a material world? Oh, blow my chassis. Last week, at the Cafeteria in Makawao, I watched a very funny movie from the 1980s about a military school that starred some guy who looked eerily a lot like Patrick Swayze. I think it was called Lords of Discipline, which sounds like a great name for a hardcore folk-rock group with banjos, but that’s just me. “Wasn’t that a movie with Tony Danza?” said a co-worker. “Oh, no, that was Lords of Flatbush.” What? Anyway, the underlying moral of the film seemed to be that deception, backstabbing, closeted homosexuals and buzz cuts have always been part of the cadet way. And then the remaining artistes of the house strapped me down and made me watch the whole season of the Disinformation TV series, which, as one of the boys put it, “is kinda like the video version of Bizarre magazine.” It was really quite fascinating, but seriously inspires weirdness, paranoia and conspiracy theorizing, which I generally like to save for Sundays at the drum circle in Makena. On a somewhat rainy Wednesday, BJ, TBB, “John” and I drove all the way from Lahaina just to be denied the five o’clock movie, Good Bye Lenin! at the MACC in Wailuku. It seems the movie hadn’t actually arrived so they were encouraging people to stay for the later film, but we had other ideas—to booze away at the Hang Loose Lounge in Kahului! Woo-hoo! BJ and I enjoyed a cocktail or two while the boys were busy checking out the Akaku studios next door. Hell, we figured what’s the point in investigating our surroundings when the Fried Pork Skins were right there! But after a while, BJ and I went shopping at the Minit Stop. We discovered a fabulous deal—hey, girls love a sale!—two 40 oz. Steinlagers for two bucks! Except the counter nazi vetoed us because BJ didn’t have her ID, even though I did and even stooped so low as to deny having anything to do with my wayward companion. Alas, it didn’t work so we showed our new friend how mature we were by getting the boys to purchase the liquor for us while we waited outside, hiding. Ha! How old are we? “Geez, it was easier buying alcohol when we were underage!” said BJ. And so we were off to have crab legs at Hecocks in Lahaina. BJ and I had been dreaming about the tender, buttery morsels of sea-flesh all week long, reminiscing about the steaming, fresh crustaceans eaten out of paper bags at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. We had reservations at 8, but that didn’t stop us from picking up poor hitchhiker Lauren, who was just back from a relaxing trip to Hana. We tortured her with tales of our liquor-purchasing ineptitude while blaring Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” down Front Street, which made us fifteen minutes late for dinner, thereby missing the very last of the crab legs. And yet, in the face of so much adversity, and Tuaca Lemon Drops, BJ and I still managed some sense of grace. Okay, so we weeble-wobbled but we didn’t fall down, dammit. MTW
