LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR RIPS THE GIPP Some say Ronald Reagan committed treason by undermining then-President Jimmy Carter’s negotiations with Iran during the Hostage Crisis, making deals to sell weapons for the hostages that were released on his inauguration day- and strong evidence supports that (“The Real Reagan,” June 10). Some say he was a war criminal who violated Congressional directives with his Contra war against Nicaragua’s legitimate government, and he probably was. Some say his administration welcomed greed and financial corruption, setting an example of dishonest accounting that prefigured the Enron culture and allowed the savings and loan banking collapse—and it is likely true. Some say he polished the use of partisan regulatory appointees whose actual job was to oversee abuse of the resources and people their agencies were designed to protect, and he probably did. Some say his extravagant support of Mujahaddin guerrillas resisting Russian control of Afghanistan created trained and dedicated Islamic terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, and they are likely right. But this charming actor’s most important legacy may be his repeal of the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine. The consolidation of commercial radio, TV, print, and film media sources under a few companies, whose management varies from partisan to timid—has made free press and speech an endangered species. Heavy investment in PR “perception management,” the barrage from hired opinionators, the “reporters” on a second partisan paycheck and the systematic exclusion of those who actually question authority has left much of the public thoroughly, if uneasily misinformed. What impressed me the most, since I do not follow politics is this: After the Iran Contra scandal that was done during his term, President Ronald Reagan apologized for all the people who were involved and took the full blame upon himself, on public television, his fault or not, as a leader he took the guilt on his shoulders. I am sorry, America. How many leaders, managers, “bosses” would do this now? Admit to their mistake, whether it was their fault or not. “I cannot tell a lie, I cut down the cherry tree.” If I had known this, I would have registered to vote and voted for his re-election term. No candidate now shows as much integrity as did Ronald Reagan. Anyway, when Reagan went on TV in 1986 as the Iran-Contra scandal was smashing his administration to bits—selling weapons to Iran in exchange for hostages and then funneling the profits to the Contras’ bloody civil war in Nicaragua will do that—the Gipper actually lied to the American people, saying that U.S. officials didn’t do the said unconstitutional acts.

That when you throw something out the window it magically disappears? Or that you have personal servants who follow you around to pick up your garbage? You must be the same guy I saw relaxing at the beach, having a smoke. But when you left your spot, it wasn’t so nice any more because it was full of your cigarette butts. I know those butts are disgusting, but why are they so bad that you can only bring yourself to throw them on the ground instead of taking them back with you? Or are they just too heavy to carry? Your right to smoke does not include the right to trash this island.

‘Everyone Looked so Grown Up’

sented speeches of encouragement for their fellow classmates. Salutatorian and class president Pavao had won a scholarship for masterminding the building of an outdoor pavilion earlier in the year, allowing kids to exercise when it rains. He reminded the class how easy kindergarten had seemed, how silly the first couples in the class had been, and how “everyone looked so grown up” at junior prom. He also spoke about fun parties, first cars and spring break. They sang their class song, “Been There Before,” about responsibility for the future. The band was made up of a few graduating seniors playing instruments in their gowns, while everyone else jammed along in dance. Finally, finally, it was time to throw their hats up into the air and have them fall all over the place. Nobody cared where they landed, because school was out! UB40 songs played through the speakers as the graduated class filed out exactly the way they came. This time they were free from school, but their connection to the community was still intact. The kids scattered around the makai side of the campus while families, teachers and friends waited patiently in line to place a lei around their necks. Necklaces of flowers, shells, candy and chocolate built up higher and higher around these proud graduate’s faces as they grinned widely from the love of their families. Some smiles were barely visible as the flower necklaces gathered higher, blocking out all but their eyes. A seemingly endless line of big trucks drove out of the parking lot, honking in congratulations as we left the ceremony. MTW

School’s out for graduating Hana High seniors It was a warm and sunny day in Hana. Strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” wafted through the air as my friend and I sat in his treehouse. We were looking out over the elementary and high school campus. It was June 5, the day of the graduation ceremony. You see, the Hana High graduation is not your average year-end event. The whole community comes out to celebrate the teenagers who have worked so hard to receive their diplomas. For the most part these kids have attended school together since kindergarten and form a family among themselves. The love in the air was palpable as we all filled the bleachers and chairs under rustling shade trees. Family members and well-wishers included Pat Benatar and Kris Kristofferson. The 23 students of the Hana High graduating class marched one at a time through ivy-covered trellises as everyone clapped for them. Then they stood patiently in their dark-green gowns for two hours while adults talked about all sorts of important things. There were proposed guidelines for life, excerpts read from key books, words of advice from politicians and teachers. Speeches were presented in Hawaiian and English, scholarships were awarded to help the students continue their educations at Maui Community College, University of Hawaii and other trade schools and universities. Eddy Pu—aka Mr. Aloha, retired park service employee at Ohe’o Gulch and current coconut-stand man—presented two $250 awards and one for $500. “I wish I could give scholarships to everyone in the class, but visitors don’t have enough money,” he said. “I love you all.” This being Hana, halfway through the ceremony the clouds shifted and a light smattering of rain fell on the gathered

Man, that’s a lot of leis crowd. Guest speaker Senator J. Kalani English reminded everyone that rain can be a blessing from the ancestors, as most of the graduating students have 1000-year-old family connections to the land. “Wherever you go your legs will take you, your mind will guide you, but we rest on your shoulders,” said Mr. Castro, their guidance counselor. “You are from Hana.” Then students presented their family and friends with leis that they were invited to come up to the front and accept with a hug. REPORT We’ve all watched in recent months the sharp upswing in “minor decoy operations,” whereby a couple LC investigators, Maui Police officers and one or two undercover minors go bar-hopping to see if they can buy booze from careless bars and convenience stores. Now most of us agree that kids buying liquor is a bad thing. But the zeal with which the LC is stinging small bars and stores is chilling. Of course, more than a few stores are, given the heat and the possibility of incurring a couple thousand bucks in fines, incredibly reckless. In the case of Rodeo General Store, clerk/duty manager Roxanne Baylosis was very aware of the LC’s methods, but it doesn’t seem to have helped her one bit. On the night in question she’d been on duty since 2:30 that afternoon. A young-looking male came up to the counter with the alcohol he wished to purchase. Baylosis told him she needed to check his ID because “they are out there doing stings.” Grumbling that it was his birthday, the young male eventually complied. His ID showed he had just turned 23, so Baylosis completed the sale. We know all this because the customer standing behind the young male was minor decoy Chalsea-Marie A.H. Honokaupu, who was in the process of doing a sting and overheard everything. Honokaupu then went to the counter and presented a 24-oz. bottle of Corona and her legal Hawaii State Drivers License that included a bar in nice bold red letters above the photo stating “UNDER 21 UNTIL 04/08/2005.” Baylosis then rang up Honokaupu’s sale without talking to her or even asking to see her ID.

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, JUN. 7 There’s great news! Rapes of adult women are down in the U.S.! But there’s also bad news—rapes of adult women are up in Hawaii. All this news comes courtesy of the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, reports todays’ Associated Press. As is usual with statistics like this, officials aren’t sure whether the increase is due to more crimes or more crime reporting. Oh, but don’t worry—this is apparently a good thing. “The strength is in the high number of people reporting sexual assaults because of a strong relationship with law enforcement,” Center director Adriana Ramelli told the AP. What a comfort.

Tonight’s the night a bunch of lefties— yeah, there are still a few left, apparently—plan to raise hell outside the Maui Tropical Plantation to protest Governor Linda Lingle’s big $100-aplate fundraiser. But the protesters aren’t really taking issue with Lingle’s fundraiser per se, but with her partisan support of Fearless Leader George W. Bush. “Let’s show the governor that we, the people of Maui, do not support Bush’s policies,” read a news release from the group Democracy for America. And while I’m all for shining a light on Lingle’s waytoo-generous praise for fellow Republican Bush, fairness demands that I mention that good-guy Mayor Alan Arakawa has since December been an “honorary cochair” of the Bush campaign’s Hawaii Leadership Team… Speaking of leadership, that new light at Laniupoko that’s been taunting drivers headed in and out of the West Side finally became active today. And, in a stunning example of how expectations can be met, traffic slowed to a crawl on both sides of the light. Now as you sit in your car, slowly creeping along

In these days of soldiers marching off to the Middle East, brave firefighters charging up burning stairwells and recently deceased presidents and jazz artists, we hear the word “hero” tossed about nearly as often as the phrase “J. Lo got married.” And frankly, it’s starting to piss me off. Heroes are people who sacrifice to save the rest of us. Heroes are people who put their lives on the line to make sure we can get home to the wife and tuck the kids in bed at night and clean up whatever mess Rex the irritable Black Lab made in the kitchen. Heroes are rare, priceless individuals in short supply. But now, today, thanks to today’s Maui News, we can sleep a little easier tonight, because of two men who more than meet the minimum qualifications for heroes. Of course, I’m speaking of Daniel Kahaikupuna Lealoha and Frederick Ponce, who have—with no thought to their own personal well-being—stepped forward to fight the good fight. That’s right: They’re suing both the State of Hawaii and the County of Maui in hopes of overturning the ban on cockfighting. In fact, the two men even claim that the ban on pitting poultry against poultry while guys clutching bills cheer has

FRIDAY, JUN. 11 The good folks at the federal government decide to honor the late President Ronald Reagan by kicking back at home. You remember Reagan—old guy, made a lot of movies, conquered the mighty empire of Grenada. For more information on Reagan or other U.S. presidents, do not consult your local library, as it’s closed today as well.

SATURDAY, JUN. 12 Speaking of kicking back, it was reported today that on Aug. 11 Hawaiian Airlines will stop their daily 717 flights to the islands of

Lanai and Molokai. This will, naturally, cost some people their jobs, but hey—if Hawaiian doesn’t want to fly anyone more, who’s to stop them? Your crazy neighbor who’s talking your ear off about the hidden costs that come with aluminum siding? Those fatcats in Washington? That’ll be the day. But seriously: High prices and no service—is there anything inter-island air service can’t provide?

SUNDAY, JUN. 13 Tired of spending the last five decades in the minority in the Honolulu state legislature, the Grand Old Party has vowed to foment a “revolution”—probably doing for our state what Dubya’s been doing for America. You know, starving government so private enterprise can run wild, that sort of thing. They’ll need a revolution to do it, though— Democrats currently outnumber Republicans in the state house 36 to 15. And, as political analyst Tom Coffman pointed out in today’s Honolulu Advertiser, they likely aren’t getting there riding Governor Linda Lingle’s break-up-the-school-board wagon. In any case, state GOP chairman Brennon Morioka gave the Advertiser an earful of campaign-speak that could have easily come from Ralph Nader, Ross Perot or Marv Albert for that matter: “We’re tired of the status quo,” he told Advertiser reporters Lynda Arakawa and Gordon Y. K. Pang. “We want change, we want things to move forward. And we’re not going to stand for it. And maybe 2004 will be our revolution.” Still, the Democrats did come to power back in 1954 because the Republicans were fat and happy. Fancy rhetoric and historical trends aside, I’m sure that right wing revolution in Hawaiian politics is a long way off… Okay, it’s here. Today’s Maui News tells us that great Holo Ka’a Public Transit system run by Akina Aloha Tours the county finally set up two years ago is pretty much dead. Or will be in a couple weeks. Guess what? No funding, and no promise of increased funding in the future to make up for the near-complete lack of funding now. Specifically, the Maui County Council recently authorized half a million bucks to go to the bus contract, but Akina says they need a good $1 million on top of that to keep going for another year. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD HEADY PROBLEM In January, University of Utah hospital surgeons removed half the skull of Briana Lane, 22 and unemployed, in order to save her life after an auto accident, but because putting the skull back in place was not quite an emergency, it was delayed by negotiations over cost. The skull remained in a freezer for three months, with Lane battling serious pain (and wearing a plastic helmet for protection, feeling her brain “shifting” on her) while the hospital negotiated with the state Medicaid office, which pays only for long-term “disabilities.” Her skull was finally reattached on April 30.

ADVENTURES WITH LUBRICANTS In January, a National Park Service ranger arrested Marvin Buchanon for drug possession along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Buchanon had been discovered sitting in a truck one evening, naked, covered with baby oil and with women’s underwear at his feet. And in a widely reported incident in May, Roger Chamberlain, 44, was arrested in Binghamton, N.Y., after having allegedly smeared 14 containers’ worth of petroleum jelly on nearly every inch of the walls and furniture of a Motel 6 room (and who was found shortly afterward at another motel, himself covered with the substance).

Oklahoma state Rep. Mike O’Neal, married with three children and the author of the state’s proposed “Defense of Marriage Act,” was charged with a felony in February for grabbing a woman’s buttocks in an Oklahoma City bar. He was also accused of making lewd comments to, and chasing after, her. And one of the sponsors of Georgia’s sanctity-of-marriage constitutional amendment (introduced in January), state Sen. Bill Stephens, was divorced in 1991 after 15 years of marriage but then had the marriage no-counted (“annulled”) in order to marry a Catholic woman in 1994, according to a public records check by Atlanta’s Southern Voice.

Among the secret British military plans recently revealed from classified documents: (1) a huge landmine to be planted during World War II on the German plains (to prevent the Soviet army from overreaching), to be kept at a warm, detonatable temperature by the body heat of thousands of live chickens underground (according to Britain’s National Archives in April) and (2) a post-World War II plan disclosed in May to equip pigeons as suicide dive-bombers carrying explosives and biological agents to a targeted area. The military said its research showed that homing pigeons could be tricked via electromagnetic fields into sensing that their “home” was actually the target area, but pigeon experts say it is more likely the pigeons would have returned to dive-bomb Britain.

MALPRACTICE Despite the 39-day waiting list for brain operations at the Queens Medical Center in Nottingham, England, the hospital suspended neurosurgeon Terence Hope in March (after 18 years’ service), not for substandard work but because he had been accused of taking extra croutons for his soup in the hospital cafeteria, without paying. (The suspension was lifted three days later.)

What you’re holding in your hot little hands right now is the Official Maui Time Maui Film Festival Guide/Issue/Thing. We’ve put a lot of time and effort and information into this Guide/Issue/Thing, so we’d appreciate it if you held onto it for a while. Basically, we’ve got everything you need to know about the Festival. You want to know where to park? Check. Want the inside dope on some of this year’s more colorful features? Check. Want to know the rundown on all the big flicks, shorts and cartoons? Check, check and check. Want free tickets and passes to all the best stuff? You wish. The 5th annual Festival is the brainchild of Barry and Stella Rivers and their spiritual adviser Chew Qi, The Wonder Dog. Bigger than ever, this year’s lineup sports more than 70 films, some showing on Maui for the first time anywhere. Basically, you need this Guide/Issue/Thing more than ever. Hey—CNN is here, filing 32 separate stories on the Festival on its main cable network as well as Headline News and CNN.com. And we’re not even mentioning all the big Hollywood celebritytypes that will be standing around at all them VIP parties, talking about whatever it is Hollywood celebrity-types talk about. Anyway, the venues are what you’ve come to expect. Many of the screenings will take place at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC), at both their Castle and McCoy Theaters. But once again, there will be films at the Maui Digital SkyDome and at the Celestial Cinema, allowing hundreds of people to watch movies the way they were meant to be—under the warm Hawaiian sky. This year’s free SandDance celebration on Wailea Beach will highlight some of Charlie Chaplin’s better shorts. Panel discussions will run Jun. 19, from 11:30 in the morning to four in the afternoon. This year’s topics include how to make message pictures that work, how the movie industry really works and the practical and technical hazards that come with making some of the more extreme movies out there. BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS A satirical comedy as well as love story, this film marks the directorial debut of actor/writer Stephen Fry (Peter’s Friends, Gosford Park). Adapted from the classic novel Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh, the film is set in the 1930’s and concerns a social set known to the adoring press as the “right Young Things.” Adam (newcomer Stephen Cambpell Moore) and his friends are young, wealthy, witty, party-going creatures who embrace every innovation, from the gramaphone to the telephone to “naughty salt.” Amidst the madness, Adam, who is well connected but broke, is desperately trying to get enough money to marry the beautiful Nina (Emily Mortimer: Lovely and Amazing, Elizabeth). This is the theater on Wailea Beach just below the Four Seasons Resort. Being located on a public beach and all, the films shown here are all free. You just sit in the sand and watch films—this year, a collection of some of Charlie Chaplin’s best shorts, all accompanied live by local musician Les Adam. Maui Film Festival @Wailea EVERYDAY PEOPLE On the island Manhattan, experiencing many of the same runaway problems of overdevelopment and gentrification as Maui, this film follows a day at Raskin’s diner, a family-run restaurant in Brooklyn, as news spreads of its sale to an upscale developer. Over the course of the long, tense day, the working class and multi-generational staff and customers have to grapple with a suddenly cloudy future. Like so many of America’s working poor, their lives are at the mercy of forces beyond their control. From the secretly sympathetic owner, to the wealthy waitress who wants to be a poet, to the single mother just trying to hold it all together, all must make choices about what one is willing to do for money, the role of education, cultural loyalties and familial responsibilities.

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF AL JAZEERA

reports and near round-the-clock tributes to the late President Ronald Reagan didn’t betray a “pro-American” leaning. The station first began broadcasting in November, 1996 from Dohar, Qatar (“Al Jazeera” is Arabic for “the peninsula”). It’s funded by the Qatari royal family, which gave the station the mandate to probe any nation in the Arab world that isn’t Qatar. It took very little time for the governments in Cairo, Ankara, Riyadh and just about everywhere else in the Middle East to call for an end to the station. Of course, mere criticism is nothing compared to America’s handling of Al Jazeera—an “accidental” cruise missile launch or two on station bureaus in Iraq and Afghanistan. You’d think a virtually-free news organization would be something the U.S. government would want to support, but apparently not. Jehane Noujaim—who helmed the superlative Startup.com a couple years ago— directs Control Room. Startup was a masterpiece of understatement—a narration-free documentary that still managed to get eerily close to the inner workings of the web firm Govworks. Noujaim intimately showed how a bunch of college pals deluded themselves into thinking their tiny website was worth billions, then began turning on each other when times got tough for them and every other dot.com out there.

If you measure a television news network by the number of governments it’s pissed off, then Al Jazeera is the best in the world. No other network—not CNN, not BBC, not even that one with all the rich white fat guys—is so thoroughly loathed and attacked as Al Jazeera. Then again, no network does so much hard-hitting investigative reporting. With its website http://english.aljazeera.net, the network is now available in English to anyone online. Now Al Jazeera itself is the subject of a new investigative film. Control Room goes behind the scenes of the Arab world’s most famous news channel, showing us the anchors and reporters and pressures that come with being the world’s most controversial news organization. But to paint Al Jazeera as just an Arab CNN is to miss the point—unlike CNN, Al Jazeera is interesting. Their stories are hard-hitting and thoroughly investigated. Recent pieces have dealt with problems U.S. forces are having training a new Iraqi army; an Ankara, Turkey, Chamber of Commerce report on how organized crime “plagues” the Turkish economy and how 15,000 antiquities are still missing from Iraqi museums, stolen during the looting that plagued Baghdad when U.S. forces swept into the city last year. Of course, they take a hard look at American actions in the regions. Some Western observers have criticized the station for airing tapes and statements made by Osama bin Laden or other members of the Al Qaida organization. Others merely object to Al Jazeera’s “pro-Arab” bias—as though Fox News’ steady stream of positive Iraqi war

DEAR FRANKIE In this sentimental festival darling, nine-year-old Frankie and his single mum Lizzie (Emily Mortimer) have been on the move ever since Frankie can remember, most recently arriving in a seaside Scottish town. Wanting to protect her deaf son from the truth that they’ve run away from his estranged father, Lizzie has invented a story that Dad is away at sea on the HMS Accra. Every few weeks, Lizzie writes Frankie a makebelieve letter from his father, telling of his adventures in exotic lands. As Frankie tracks the ship’s progress around the globe, he discovers that it is due to dock in his hometown. With the real HMS Accra arriving in only a fortnight, Lizzie must choose between telling Frankie the truth or finding the perfect stranger to play Frankie’s father for just one day.

DESTINO To a song of love lost and rediscovered, a woman sees and undergoes surreal transformations in this Oscar-nominated animated short, which began as a collaboration between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney, and was finally completed by Roy Disney years later.

This inspiring documentary tells the epic account of Time cover story subject Erik Weihenmayer—the first blind man to summit Mt. Everest. As if that were not enough of an achievement, the Farther Than The Eye Can See Climbing Expedition included several other historic milestones, including having the most members from one expedition team reach the 29,035 foot-high summit in a single day, the first American father/son team to reach the summit and the oldest person to summit Mt. Everest. The groundbreaking journey also made film history by shooting the first High Definition footage from the top of the mountain.

When Charlie the Tramp wanders into a mission he is smitten by Edna and puts back the collection box which he has taken. Reformed, he becomes a policeman and is assigned to rough-and-tumble Easy Street. Unable to trick or beat Eric the Tough, he puts Eric’s head in a gas pipe and anesthetizes him. A hero, he now helps many poor people living on Easy Street. Eric escapes jail, Edna is kidnapped, but Charlie (recharged after sitting on a doper’s needle) conquers all.

FESTIVAL EXPRESS Maui had Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Rainbow Bridge concert, and Canada had Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and The Band performing and living together on a train for five straight days in 1970. Some 35 years after the “Canadian Woodstock,” the never-before seen footage has been rediscovered and edited, along with new interviews, into this rockin’ documentary.

THE FLOOR WALKER After causing havoc on the sales floor Chaplin goes to the office floor. There he runs into the store inspector (who looks exactly like him) who has just robbed the safe and knocked out the manager. Charlie thinks he is in front of a mirror till he notices that his “image” holds the bag of loot. A comedy of mistaken identities and some of the funniest moments you’ll ever see on an escalator.

C h a r l i e Chaplin is the man who made it cool to be called a tramp. This year’s Maui Film Festival celebrates Chaplin’s films at the SandDance Theater, featuring free screenings on Wailea beach. C’mon, you know Charlie Chaplin. He’s that funny looking English fellow waddling around in silent films, wearing baggy pants and a derby cap with a square tuft of a mustache. Behind the screen, he was a motion picture master who not only financed and produced almost all his films, but was also the author, actor, director and composer. Chaplin hit it big in the silent era, with his films accompanied only by a lone organ player behind the curtain. It takes a pretty funny guy to get people laughing at a time without sound while poverty and war prevailed. Moviegoers back then didn’t even have popcorn to munch on, to say nothing of Sour Patch Kids. Man, times were tough. But Chaplin portrayed often-penniless characters—workers, janitors, vagabonds, drunks—showing these common, candyless folk how they could rise above it all. Or at the least, find comic relief by smashing a pie in someone’s face. A king of physical comedy, Chaplin could take melancholy subjects and morph them into fallover-yourself funny. But when talking movies hit the theaters in 1928, Chaplin wasn’t laughing. “Talkies are spoiling the oldest art in the world—the art of pantomime,” he said at the time. “They are ruining the great beauty of silence, and defeating the meaning of the screen.” His views became increasingly unpopular, and in the 1950’s, Chaplin was kicked out of the States, suspected of “unAmerican activities.” Maybe it was his mustache that looked too un-American? Or could it be that Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy was just a little paranoid? Regardless, Chaplin got the last pie in their face. He was invited back to the U.S. in 1972 to receive an Academy Award for achievement, shortly after which Queen Elizabeth II knighted him. Not bad for your average little tramp. There are a number of awards given out at this year’s Maui Film Festival, to famous types like Woody Harrelson, Bill Maher and Angela Bassett. But the guy winning the inaugural Trailblazer Award is producer Ted Hope. His company This is That has produced 50 films including the critically acclaimed 21 Grams, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, In the Bedroom, The Ice Storm and The Brothers McMullen. The honor is for “producing movies that matter in a world that does not always make sense,” as well as being excellent and creative and all that. But missing from the Festival tribute handed out to the press is any mention of the critical role Hope played in stopping a plan last year that threatened to shut out independent filmmakers from consideration for major awards like the Golden Globe or Oscar. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) began threatening a so-called “screener ban” last fall—an end to the old practice of filmmakers sending screener tapes of their movies to award judges. Seemingly an innocuous decision, such a ban would have made it nearly impossible for indy-filmmakers to compete for awards, since their low budgets and minimal distribution networks often meant many judges had never even heard of their work. Hope heard about the pending decision when making his usual New York-Baltimore commute. Talking to his head of distribution, Hope asked how they were planning to send out screener copies of his new film American Splendor. His distributor told him they probably weren’t sending any, since a ban was coming into effect—a response Hope said appalled him. “Lots of people had conspiracy theories,” Hope said, explaining why the big studios were considering a ban. “I always wish there were conspiracy theories. I wish they cared enough [about independent films]. But it was their level of arrogance—they thought the only movies that matter are the big blockbusters that get pirated. [They forgot that] as long as tapes get into the critics hands, these films get noticed.” Hope was looking at some cold arithmetic. He’d just spent the last five years watching independent and “specialized” films—typically darker, stranger or just more colorful than big studio productions—gain a real foothold in the movie industry. which cost $3 million to make, had brought in ten times that, allowing him to further his distribution and make more movies. “It was a threat to movies and my overall livelihood,” said Hope. “I had to keep deals going. I was shocked there was no outcry.” Hope began querying other distributors. They told him not to worry. “I had the sense to know I’d better worry even more,” he said. Eventually, Hope and and a few others managed to get 300 individuals—including Robert Redford and Francis Ford Coppola—to sign a protest against the proposed screener ban. The protest ran as an ad in Variety, which got Hope a meeting with MPAA president Jack Valenti. Then things stopped happening. Nothing substantive came of the Valenti meeting. People told Hope not to ruffle feathers. He and his allies responded by suing the MPAA. It was just before Thanksgiving when they finally went before a judge. “The judge asked if it was so pressing, why we’d waited so long,” Hope recalled. “Because we wanted to be nice!”

The Golden Globe awards were coming up fast. Hope and his crew tried to get specialized film distributors to testify, but they were under gag orders handed down by the studios. They were then subpoenaed, but “miraculously” no one was available when the servers came around. “It was a complete jam,” said Hope. “Then Harvey Weinstein agreed to sign an affidavit and go on the record. He was the only one that stepped forward. That turned out to be crucial.” Finally, the judge ruled in their favor. People he referred to as “predominantly L.A.based producers” began approaching Hope. “What are you doing, Ted?” Hope said they asked him. “[The studios] are going to retaliate.” So far, Hope said there’s been no retaliation. Quite the opposite, Hope said defeating the screener ban led to closer relations between specialized filmmakers and the big studios—even to the point of Valenti offering indy-filmmakers a chance to participate in future discussions. “I’ve always been told that specialized films share less than five percent of the marketplace,” Hope said. “But that activity’s been increasing—closing on 15 percent. The audience for these films has been bigger than it’s ever been.” MTW

Tronolone: Oh yeah, I’ve been in scary situations but I never think I am gonna buy it when I’m out there. It’s when I get back and am watching the video I think, “if I were in that spot, I would have definitely bought it.”

Hanging on the back of a Jet Ski in Peahi’s 80-foot surf, with video camera in hand, earned Chris Tronolone and his associate producers Shanti Berg, Dennis Early and Sebastian “Buster” Tronolone a spot in this year’s Maui Film Festival. Their film, Jaws Underground, took more than $15,000 and two years to film. The film documents local guys ripping the most humungous curls ever, and is getting both the producers and the surfers local and national attention. I recently sat down with Berg and Tronolone in their oneroom Haiku studio for a sneak peak at the local movie that’s pounding the Film Festival this year.

Berg: We’d been showing it to some of the guys around town and some of the surfers suggested we send it in. It’s our third submission so we’re really happy to finally have one that made it. I think the surfers’ excitement had a lot to do with getting it in.

Berg: The unknown legends of Maui, and some new, young kids riding the waves like the legends. Surfers like Kaleo Amadeo, Mark Anderson, Ian Walsh, Archie Kalepa and Pete Cabrina.

Tronolone: Basically, January 10, 2004, Eric Hyden, photographer and friend of ours, knocked on Shanti’s door at 5 a.m. and said, “come on, it’s gigantic.” So, we shot seven or eight hours of the biggest day of surfing that ever happened. Jan. 10 put us over the edge, but there was another day too—Nov. 26, 2002. On the 26th, Garrett McNamara got spit out of an 80-foot face and came out with his arms out—the sickest, biggest wave still that anyone’s ever seen surfed. So we’ve got shots like this sitting in our studio and we’re thinking “yah, maybe we’ll make a T.V. show.” Then Jan. 10th comes along and we’re just saying “Omigod. You put the 26th and the 10th together and it would be a crime not to make a movie.” How did you get the shots? Berg: Chris swims on the smaller days. But when it’s really big, you just stay on the Jet Ski. Even the best filmers don’t get out there

Tronolone: We’ve made a name for ourselves in kite boarding with the 11 videos we’ve made and our own video distribution, which supplements our income. Also, this year we’re shooting the entire Professional Kite Riders Association tour. But we are basically broke and spend everything we make on our equipment and projects. But by investing in ourselves and the company, we can always at least sustain the lifestyle we love, that of an independent filmmaker. And still to this day, I will spend my last dollar on buying a bunch of airplane tickets and tapes and go off to chase my dreams.

How’s the switch been? Berg: It’s been really fulfilling, actually. I didn’t have very much control in normal production, but here I have all kinds of control. Tronolone: There’s a right we reserve here and that’s complete creative control. It’s the ability to make decisions from an artistic level, not from a corporate level, not from a political level, not from a financial level.

Why do you do it? What are your future aspirations? Tronolone: The bottom line is, there’s me, Shanti and Buster and we are all basically storytellers, and our medium is video.

Tronolone: My goal’s to write, produce and direct a major motion picture. I’m working on a screenplay now. I’d really like to produce a Sci-Fi movie, a romantic comedy or a thriller.

Where do you get your ideas?

When did you team up? Tronolone: Buster, my little brother and I, started Tronolone productions in 1997 and we picked up Shanti in 1999. He was working at [Akaku] downtown and it took me a while to lure him out of the normal 9-5, health insurance, always get paid every two weeks kind of job. But over the course of a couple good jobs, I was able to persuade him to join the team.

Tronolone: A good friend of mine, Tai Van Dyke hooked me up with my first job shooting movies for Volcom with Tai and Kaleo Roberson and the Volcom team.

news show. I got good at editing quickly and actually, when I was working at a restaurant in Lahaina, I saw Chris’ first show, High, and I thought to myself, “those are amazing water shots, but that editing is terrible. I need to meet that guy because I could make his stuff look amazing.”

Tronolone: I usually get my ideas when I’m not trying to think of them and I’ll write ‘em down on the wall or something because they go just as quickly as they come. Shanti likes to see what’s out there but I am really weird. He’ll say, “Dude, you gotta see this movie,” and I’ll be like, “no, get it away from me,” because I like my ideas to be original, which is really hard.

Would you say Jaws Underground is your best movie? Tronolone: Just because how powerful Peahi is and how life threatening all the days we got on film were, I would say it’s really our most, umm... Berg: High impact. Really high impact.

Where have you traveled to make movies? What do you hope comes of the movie? Tronolone: Let’s see. I’ve been to Japan, Tahiti, France, Austria, Belgium, Figi, the Caribbean, Mexico...

Tronolone: Jaws Underground is about giving something back to the men that go out there and risk their lives. We’re not trying to make a lot of money, we’re just trying to get these guys some exposure and recognition.

Berg: It’s really exciting to go on these tours and go to all these other places just to reaffirm how beautiful Maui is and how much this place offers. When I leave, I go to some place, I look around and I think “this is cool for a day or two, but I can’t wait to go back to Maui.”

BEHIND THE SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK ‘N ROLL OF METALLICA time being in group therapy also seemed like great material for a documentary.” But then Metallica’s record label, Elektra, got a little antsy and wanted to put the film out quickly as trendy cable fodder, to coincide with the release of St. Anger. This was far ahead of the schedule Berlinger and Sinofsky had planned. “They [Elektra] wanted to chop it into multiple parts and put it on TV with commercial breaks and bleeped ‘shits’ and ‘fucks,’ redesigned as reality television,” Berlinger said in the website interview. “While we both really enjoy The Osbournes, we saw this project as a sort of antitheses to that show, and now it was about to be transformed into something meant to be consumed, spit out and forgotten.” The band members sided with the filmmakers. Instead of dealing with the record company, Metallica bought out Elektra’s investment in the film and gave back control to Berlinger and Sinofsky. The resulting rockumentary has been made an Official Selection for film festivals worldwide, including the Sundance, South By Southwest, True/False, San Francisco International, London International and Full Frame Film Festivals. Even if you’re not particularly a fan of Metallica but are just nosy enough to want to peek in on the “lifestyles of the rich and famous,” it will likely make your own dreary existence seem not so bad after all. Ever want to be a rock star? Or just date one? Well, watch this movie about the trials and tribulations of one of hard rock’s most successful bands in history and then think again. Metallica: Some Kind of Monster is a documentary that follows the legendary heavy metal band as they struggle to overcome the “clashing egos and artistic inertia” that came from spending 20 years together making music. The film also chronicles the departure of longtime bass-guitarist Jason Newsted as well as lead singer James Hetfield’s entry into rehab for alcoholism, all while the band is preparing to make their latest album, St. Anger after a six-year hiatus. When they end up in group therapy, the cameras are still in tow. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky—documentary filmmakers for multiple-award winning 1992’s Brother’s Keeper and 1996’s Paradise Lost—spent three years on the film. They came up with the idea after filming a VH1 piece on extremely devoted music fans, with Metallica and their audience at the forefront. The band and filmmakers then set about preparing for a potential future collaboration, allowing for the right time when Berlinger and Sinofsky’s all-access approach would be welcomed by the band, or at least, not so intrusive and jarring. The time was finally right in 2001, but not without some trepidation. “When you set out to make a cinema-verité film you never know where it is going to take you,” said Berlinger in an interview posted on the movie’s official website. “We also made sure that we had complete access to the band’s sessions with [therapist] Phil Towle, and the idea of the most successful metal band of all

Chaplin plays a tramp, who, after saving a farmer’s daughter from thieves, is given a job on the farm as a reward. Charlie later manages to thwart the same bandits who try to rob the farm, but he is accidentally shot in the process by the farmer. Charlie basks in the attention of the farmer, and his daughter, until the girl’s boyfriend arrives. This film was not the first to introduce Charlie’s famous “tramp” character, but it laid the groundwork for many of his future masterpieces.

The story begins with the duo setting up a tasteless parody of the WTO’s website. Some visitors don’t notice the site is a fake, and send the Yes Men speaking invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO representatives.

Alan Sakamura Butcher, Mana Foods I used to manage the meat cutting plant Uncle Louie’s. The owner was a good butcher, he had spent 30 years in the business. I learned from the best. Mana Foods started importing organic New Zealand beef about two years ago and needed someone to cut it. I did meat fabrication there part time. The demand was so high I couldn’t keep up. The owners of Mana Foods offered me something really nice so I came here. They had done local fish and organic chicken for a while. The owner Ed had been a vegetarian but felt weak. He started eating fish and chicken, but beef is a different protein. It makes him feel better. You don’t need to eat it all the time, just in balance. The meat venture was brought up by Dan Rayburn, dairy manager at the time. I wanted to get the best meat we could find. Fortunately these guys on the Big Island are my friends. Kulana Foods is a co-operative of 40 to 50 different cattle ranchers on the Big Island. It’s certified organic beef, 100 percent grass fed. It’s never frozen, always fresh chilled. It’s on the shelf no more than three days. I never thought it would fly. It totally took off in one month. A lot of people need the protein. I think we’re the first store to sell organic beef on the islands. Working here is so nice. It’s so relaxed, you just do your job. I never thought I would work at Mana. There are different people from the really local crowd, people from all over the world working in harmony. I was born and raised here in Wailuku, and now reside in Haiku. I own my own home. It’s so hard, the average local person can’t afford property. I’ve worked two jobs all my life. My favorite dish is a nice healthy cut of rib eye steak. My favorite fish would be 100 percent wild Alaskan salmon. That’s the best surf and turf combo. And they’re the best two sellers. MTW

The Id of Punk

Orange County’s The Stitches come to Maui Before “punk” became radio-friendly— we’re talking Green Day and Good Charlotte—it was loud and anarchic, distorted and angry, unpredictable and wild, but with a purpose. And usually, that purpose wasn’t to sell a million records or get their multi-roomed “crib” filmed on MTV. The whole loud/fast/angry, rebellious raw energy of punk rock in the early 1980s that birthed such Southern California greats as the Circle Jerks and Black Flag also gave way to more melodic deviations like Agent Orange and Social Distortion and eventually, Bad Religion. But throughout it all, punk’s raucous f#*k you’s to authority also carried over into the music industry, as bands demanded to maintain their DIY integrity and independence. For the most part, bands had a stark choice: Wither away or become the Offspring. Very few remnants of this era remain. But The Stitches are still keeping it together. This is in spite—or because of— their punk era lack of restraint. They came together in 1993 with Mike Lohrman on vocals, Johnny Witmer on guitar, Pete “Action Man” Archer on bass—he’s been known to surf in leather pants on occasion— and drummer Johnny Sleeper. They’ve had some change-ups on drums, but are currently in sync with “Skibs” Barker. Last year, The Stitches made it all the way to #23 on OC Weekly’s list of the 129 best Orange County bands ever. And they’re in good company, too. Bands like Agent Orange, The Adolescents, TSOL, Social Distortion and Jose Feliciano were all cited with them. It took 10 years, but The Stitches finally released their first album, Twelve Imaginary Inches, a couple years ago on TKO Records. It’s also been on more than a few best lists since then—usually with some variation of the comment “you really should see them live to know what they’re all about.” Their live shows are riotous, unpredictable affairs that will be the fodder of punk show legend for years to come. One typical outing occurred at a show held at a Der Wienerschnitzel [chain hot dog stand] in Southern California. Lohrman started a food fight with mustard covered chilidogs. Another time, singer Lohrman passed out in the beginning of a Stitches’ show. The band played on, of course, instrumental only, with Lohrman face down on the

Quick—where are my pineapples?! front of the stage for the rest of the set. “We played this place [the Offspring] used to play,” recalled Sleeper in an Aug. 22, 2003 OC Weekly story. “J.J.’s in Orange, and at the time, the Offspring were totally on the radio. The whole floor was covered with shattered glass and at the time I played barefoot. The owner came out because we had to stop playing and he was trying to grab my hands, and

I jumped over the drum set, was rolling around barefoot in shards of shattered glass, yelling at the guy, ‘Don’t touch me! DON’T TOUCH ME!’ And I remember thinking, ‘Yeah, the Offspring used to play here—but not like this.’” When I asked one longtime fan in California about The Stitches’ erratic stage antics, he offered this bit of advice for our

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - (PG) Action/Adventure - This Jules Verne classic stars Jackie Chan—Jackie Chan!—as Passepartout, the Chinese thief and Steve Coogan as British adventurer Phileas Fogg. Considering that Chan does a lot of his trademark kicking and jumping and kicking while in the act of jumping, we’re guessing the studio strayed a bit from Verne’s original storyline. DODGEBALL (PG13) - Ben Stiller (Zoolander) is the hilarious head of a big fitness palace that threatens to overtake a small local gym. Vince Vaughn (Swingers) leads a group of social misfits to battle the big evil corporate world of narcissism in an epic game of, well, Dodgeball. THE TERMINAL - (PG13) - Drama - Steven Spielberg directs Tom Hanks as some Eastern European guy who gets stranded in an airport terminal because his country ceases to exist. It’s a lighthearted film, which is odd considering it’s based on a true story about a guy who ended up killing himself because he couldn’t take spending weeks and weeks in a sterile prison listening to the words “United Flight 167 now boarding at Gate 32.”

THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK - (PG13) Science Fiction/Adventure - For those who don’t remember—I had to look it up, so don’t feel bad—Riddick (Vin Diesel, who was actually best when he played that robot killing machine in the animated Iron Giant) was the bad-ass dude who could see in the dark in that film Pitch Black that came out a few years ago. Anyway, now he’s caught in some big 26th Century intergalactic war (small intergalactic wars never rate movies, it seems) and lots of stuff gets blown up. DAY AFTER TOMORROW - (PG13) - Action So the scientists are telling the politicians, “We’re killing the planet!” and the politicians are like, “Yeah, whatever” and then the Ice Age happens, like, the next day and the scientists are like, “I told you so!” and then hilarity ensues. Bram Stoker’s Dracula?). MEAN GIRLS - (PG13) - Comedy - A dark comedy starring America’s hot new multimillionaire under 20, Lindsay Lohan, and written by sardonic SNL maven Tina Fey, that examines the cruel games popular girls play in high school to achieve and maintain their superficial status. True, unfortunately these games sometimes carry over into adulthood but it certainly makes those high school reunions much more interesting. SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! SOUL PLANE - (R) - Comedy - Snoop Dogg and Method Man star in this comedy that revolves around

the first all-black airline, NWA, replete with sexy stewardesses (not “flight attendants!”), funky music (no Celine Dion!) and an on board dance club (yeah, now we’re talking!), along with the guffaws that occur when a white family (featuring Tom Arnold) is erroneously booked on their first flight. THE STEPFORD WIVES - (PG13) - Comedy - A remake of the 1975 suspense classic about a creepy upper-class suburb—actually, aren’t all suburbs kinda creepy?—where all the wives are seemingly “perfect,” but are actually just the submissive robots their creepy husbands have replaced their real wives with. All-star cast features Nicole Kidman, Mathew Broderick, Faith Hill, Chritopher Walken and Bette Midler. TROY -- (R) -- Epic Adventure - Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom put on dresses and act out that classic war epic about the war between Greek city states and Troy. The 2004 Na Kamehameha Commemorative Pa’u Parade & Ho’olaulea is a much-loved tradition in Lahaina, where everyone gathers annually along Front Street to honor the Hawaiian monarch, Kamehameha the Great, who united the islands under one kingdom in 1810. The main attraction of the cultural commemoration is the Royal Court Float—a 100-year old tradition with Na Koa warriors protecting the Mo’i Kane throughout the procession and colorful teams of pa’u riders, with their flowing wraps of satin atop steeds (that’s horses in fancy parade-talk) draped in exotic floral leis.

Freedom Seekers Sunday, 10 a.m. to noon, in front of the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului Celebrate Fathers Day the old fashioned way—by standing on the sidewalk and exercising your constitutional right to raise hell! Calling themselves the Freedom Seekers of Hawaii, a bunch of locals are going to wave signs along Ka’ahumanu Ave. to protest the selling of mostly agricultural lands to mainland developers for conversion to high-end resort hotels. It’s funny how more and more people aren’t going for the now-traditional practice of giving big-time developers who contribute thousands of dollars to elected officials who in turn approve their zoning change requests and plans to develop all the land they want, irrespective of who owned that land in the past or who might be buried just beneath it. HEADLEY GRANGE “HURT FIRE” EP “HURT FIRE” EP Headley Grange is a collaboration between hip hop emcee/producer the Mole and indie rocker Body Holiday, both stationed on Maui and both derangers of their respective genres. Hurt Fire, an EP that previews their upcoming album, is a fantastic collision of sound; it’s what you get when a quirk-loving guitarist and a futuristic beat-maker look at the world through the same kaleidoscope. Though it’s natural to compare Headley Grange to Beck and other musicians mixing hip hop into their rock songs, the sounds on Hurt Fire are clearly the spontaneous result of the artists’ chemistry rather than a nod to modern influences. The songs are great: Opening with a sound collage that advertises the joys of “owning your very own Headley Grange,” the EP segues into its title track, where Body Holiday becomes a wind-up rocker-toy in a toy factory, and the Mole plays Gepetto as he fine-tunes with piano-tinkering and clunky beats. Delivered in two parts, “Red Zone” begins with a slow chug and harmonica-like drone that carries on throughout part one; coupled with references to mountains and the pair’s craggy vocals, it sounds like the work song of two rusty gnomes as they return from the mines. The pace is picked up in part two of “Red Zone” but still maintains its feel and is also the only rap number of the set—and Body Holiday holds his own with the Mole’s years of demonstrated rhyme skills. Standing out among the oddballs, “The Reunion” is, by contrast, a lament that verges on pretty, and “Roni” is hip hop’s greatest (and possibly only) resurrection of Vanilla Ice in the new millennium. “Country Fried Hurt Fire” rounds out the set, recasting the title track as a companion to the Beverly Hillbillies theme. One of the few tracks from the EP that won’t be on the upcoming album (Rock & Roll For The Booming System), it alone is worth the price of admission. What’s most surprising about Hurt Fire is that for all of its eclectic sounds and the obvious fun involved in its making, it manages to convey a pretty serious sense of isolation. While this is most evident in “The Reunion” and the dirgey “Enough,” even the more upbeat numbers seem to have isolation in their undercurrent. This makes Hurt Fire more than just cool new music, but also music you can feel. Recorded in just two weeks, Headley Grange’s Hurt Fire is an experiment with super results, musically daring without calculation, and a must-have for folks who value freshness in their listening experience. —Motion Recordings. We met the boys in the band, who were all very nice and intent on getting “fucked up” for their next set, which we took to mean “naturally hyped by the wholesome fervor of their music.” Yesod, the drummer, proudly gave me his band’s “shaka” foam hand schwag as I chatted it up with sometime Offspring and Snoop Dogg keyboardist Ronnie King, who was from my hometown so I quickly immersed myself in his music biz gossip. Our friends were also full of interesting commentary. One guy told us how his sister had told him, “If you didn’t have a dick, you wouldn’t be worth a fuck,” while yet another friend enlightened us with a delightful new term—“budoochi”—which she explained is the scent that emanates from the collective regions of the culus, cunnus and sopionis. “Hmm, that doesn’t sound so appetitable,” said Jen. The club was so packed we didn’t really have a chance to move around, so we hung out on the side of the stage, watching the row of girls in front who were visibly vying for the chance to lick the sweat off guitarist Kaleo. Watching them reminded me of my first schoolgirl crush on a musician. It turned out to be the prelim to a long line of rock star infatuations. The one who started it all was, of course, David Lee Roth. I was eight years old and hanging on to the fringed jacket of my mother, while he, seemingly seven feet tall and glowering, loomed in the doorway to a backstage room filled with smoke and hair and naked women. As he carried on a conversation with my mom, who was doing Van Halen’s bookkeeping at the time, I was fascinated and frightened by his magnetosphere, pulling all into what I imagine now was the sexual maelstrom of the dark room behind him. He was never very pretty—proven by the sad state of affairs he’s come to be some 20-odd years later—and not very “nice,” either. But still, for some reason, he initiated my disturbing attraction to cocky, vain, obnoxiously charismatic musicians who are not so much immature and flaky as they are just completely in denial about all things time-related. I did the whole “dating only musicians” thing throughout high school but my first real boyfriend was a DJ. Still into the music thing, yet somehow they seemed more serious, more focused and actually had jobs, um, DJing. But in the end, they turned out to be just as selfobsessed, egotistical and narcissistic as the guys in bands and were definitely greedier when it came time to split our record collection during the inevitable breakup. I’m over musicians now, except for the one or two who dedicate songs to me—thank you, Marty and Mr. Trevor Jones! They can stay. But I’m definitely over the DJs. Definitely. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with a copy of Lightnin Hopkins’ 1952 “Everything Happens to Me” red vinyl 45 or Robert Johnson’s 1937 Vocalion recording of “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” on a 78. Then I might think about it.

The night after the Pepper show Jen and I weren’t quite sure what we were in the mood to do so we discussed our options over a couple of drinks at—you guessed it— the Sly Mongoose. We were torn. We finally opted for a picnic dinner of Kentucky Fried Chicken on the seawall directly across from the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina, where surely we could watch a show of our own as all the reggae die-hards gathered to see the legendary Don Carlos. And later, as we sat on the wall eating our crispy fowl, this guy sitting next to us asked Jen if she was from New Jersey. “If I was from New Jersey,” she said, “I would never admit it.” “But Bruce Springsteen is from Jersey!” he said. “My point exactly.” MTW
