LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR CAN’T TURN AWAY Each week reading LC Watch is like looking at a car wreck. I hate to see what bar or bartender is getting mutilated, but I just can’t help it. I know you aim at the LC, but often you miss your mark and hit otherwise good employees caught in a bad situation, or suffering in momentary lapses in judgment. In most cases jobs, businesses and liquor licenses have been lost and huge fines incurred. So making light of the situation and trashing the reputation in print of individuals involved (Dick’s Place) just seems unnecessary. Have you worked in the Biz? I can tell you after 20 years of bartending in three states, four countries, and on two islands, I have had more than my share of get out of control. Every veteran has. It’s impossible to call it every time. You’re dealing with human nature and alcohol. Crazy things happen. I can tell you I have never been more careful or knowledgeable about LC laws than working here on Maui. I’m not saying I agree with everything the LC does. But I am saying you should lay off the workers, and businesses who not only advertise, but support your paper. -Maui Bar Fly, via email The Editor responds: It’s unethical for me to consider whether a business advertises with Maui Time when deciding what to write about. As far as the column itself is concerned, the point of LC Watch is to show how the Maui County Department of Liquor Control does its job, using the actual public reports it compiles.

TORTURE’S BAD?

Reading Maui News reporter Harry Eagar’s “off deadline” pronouncements, if your blood pressure can take it, is often useful for keeping up with Imperialist fringe rationalizations, and today, for grimly illustrating some breathtakingly unbalanced leaps of toxic prejudgments masquerading as thinking. Harry’s latest dogma, squeezed out of a pitiful handful of facts and myths scrabbled from a subsequently ignored mountain of history and experience is truly astonishing.

In the June 22 Maui News, Harry argues that the Geneva Conventions are mere fantasy to anyone who “really counts.” Apparently he means Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush and such ilk— witness the Pentagon and administration lawyers’ two-faced contortions to justify the President’s right to torture. War is insane hell—the lives of friends may depend on brutally effective killing—but when fighting stops, a return to sanity becomes possible, and showing basic respect for others can truly end war, instead of setting the stage for another round of revenge. By recounting past atrocities, yet never mentioning ours, Harry pours gas on the fire of selfrighteous ignorance, ignoring the arrogance that plays God with lives, overlooking the power of agreements between equals to restore decency. -Daniel Grantham, Haiku The Editor responds: For our own take on Eagar’s little diatribe, check out this week’s Coconut Wireless (pg. 6).

ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER Thank you so much for “The Real Reagan” (Jun. 10). I cried watching the election results in 1980. I knew we were in for trouble. He’s no hero in my book. -Dale, via email

NEWS

To the men and women who call themselves “Maui’s Finest”—you should practice what you preach. The only difference between you and me is that your uniform is blue. People are speeding, driving on or off curbs and going through red lights (with no flashing lights), but you go stop other citizen drivers. Like me, who was driving the speed limit, with the correct one car length behind the guy in front. But then I got cut off by another car, cutting in taking advantage of that space, which forced me to break suddenly, which looked like I was speeding. But I was not. They asked me (while on the road in traffic) if I was late or in a hurry. I told them no, and then they told me that I was driving too fast. I know I wasn’t driving fast, but they’re always right and you just say sorry to avoid getting a ticket.

Rogue Republican

Clyde Prestowitz knows why the world hates us Clyde Prestowitz is a Republican. Always has been, always will be. In 1964 he founded a fan club for Senator Barry Goldwater, then running for president on a platform of giving field commanders the authority to use nuclear weapons in Vietnam. A foreign trade and policy specialist, Prestowitz spent five years in the Reagan Administration, working as counselor to the Secretary of Commerce. In 1992, when Prestowitz broke with his past and endorsed Bill Clinton for president, his mother called him, profoundly disappointed. On Jun. 22, Pestowitz’ tour promoting his new book Rogue Nation, a readable study on the failings of current U.S. foreign policy that have turned so many people and nations around the world against us, brought him to Maui. Specifically, to Maui Community College Science lecture Room 10a. The trip actually helped him a number of ways, since his daughter also lives in Kula. “That [sugar] cane has no business being there,” he said of the massive fields that cover Maui’s central valley during his lecture on free trade. “I love it, but it shouldn’t be there. The reason it’s there… is we keep subsidizing and protecting it.” Prestowitz actually has considerable ties to Hawaii. His first job was as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “I just walked in off street with resume in hand and asked to see the editor,” he told the 40 or so attendees. “Wonder of wonders, the guy saw me. The very next day I got a call. A reporter had an accident and would I come in and fill in?” Prestowitz said his first assignment was as obituary writer—a common task for cub reporters. “One night I had about 21 of these death notices,” he said. “To do them you have to call the grieving family at the worst moment in their lives and ask intrusive questions. I did 21 that night, then another came in. So I made it up.” Of course, his editor noticed it. “He should have fired me, thank God he didn’t,” said Prestowitz. “Consequently, you can believe everything I say tonight.” For a Republican, Prestowitz holds some surprisingly progressive views. He’s bothered by Bush’s doctrine of “Preventative War,” in which the U.S. can invade any nation it deems a “threat.” He also doesn’t find comfort in the fact that

ket—to keep nations like developing China and India from collapsing, flooding the world with young, pissed-off and surplus workers. “In that sense it’s about oil,” he said. “We’re like the police force. “I actually supported the war,” he admitted at one point. “I didn’t support the way we did it. Our intelligence has been faulty.” “Isn’t ‘faulty’ just a polite word?” asked a woman in the audience. “We made things up.” Prestowitz flinched, but didn’t really acknowledge that the woman was right. He is, after all, what they call an establishment conservative. Well, mostly conservative. “Who are you going to vote for?” one guy asked near the end of the lecture. “I’ve already declared support for [Democratic Senator John] Kerry,” he said. “What did your mom say?” asked another guy to a chorus of laughs. “Actually, my mom called and said she wasn’t going to vote for Bush,” Prestowitz said. “If my mom’s not voting for Bush, he’s in trouble.” MTW

Clyde the U.S. today spends more on military than the rest of the world combined. And he’s especially concerned that the U.S. no longer signs treaties with the rest of the world. Being a Republican, Prestowitz thought the flak we took for trashing the anti-carbon monoxide emissions Kyoto Treaty was a bum rap, but he thought it madness not to sign treaties creating an international criminal court or limiting small arms, landmines, chemical and biological weapons. “The message to the rest of the world is there’s one set of rules for us, one set of rules for you,” he said. “We used to form alliances. Now we have ‘coalitions of the willing.’ What are those? Posses.” Really, it’s all the hypocrisy coming out of the White House—under the current president, sure, but also former presidents Clinton, Bush Sr. and Reagan—that Prestowitz feels is damaging our relations with the rest of the world. “Americans always say we’re for free trade,” he said, then explained how U.S. protective subsidies for American cotton farmers are driving Senegal and Mali cotton farmers—who produce the same product at lower cost—to starvation. “Right now genocide is taking place in Sudan and the Congo,” said Prestowitz. “Are there any U.S. soldiers there? No… Why are we after Saddam? Oil.” So no one would think Prestowitz was a real radical, he later clarified the oil comment, saying he didn’t believe we invaded Iraq to control Iraqi oil, but to stabilize the world oil mar-

LC Watch The Commish

We talk a lot in this space about the Maui County Liquor Control Adjudication Board— the nine-member body that punishes bars, restaurants and stores for various liquor statute violations—but there’s a whole other LC appointed body out there. That would be the Liquor Commission. Their job is to grant liquor licenses. Like the Adjudication Board, the Commission meets once a month. And like the Board members, there are nine Commissioners, all appointed by the mayor for five-year terms. And virtually nothing is known about them or mentioned in the media—just like the Adjudication Board. Case in point is Commissioner Joe Tanaka. A Democrat, he’s sat on the panel since April 1, 2001. His term ends on the last day of March, 2006. From 1986 to 1992, he was a Maui County Councilman. He then parlayed that post into a State Senate seat, where he sat from 1992 to 2001, representing Wailuku and the greater Upcountry area. Tanaka announced his retirement from the senate in July, 2000. But two months later, he went on a state taxpayer-funded trip to China that ended up costing $2,180. At the time, he said it was part of his duties as member of the Senate Water, Land and Hawaiian Affairs Committee. But Common Cause Hawaii executive director Larry Meacham saw it differently. He told the Associated Press that the trip was “obviously an abuse” and “completely out of line. “There might have been some benefit to him personally,” said Meacham, “but I don’t see any public benefit.” Tanaka was never found guilty of wrongdoing, but it wasn’t the only time Meacham criticized him. In early 1999, Meacham filed a formal complaint against Tanaka for having his official state senate office phone number appear in an advertisement for a charity softball game at Maui High featuring “Playboy’s Donna Perry and her fabulous Playmate friends.” Tanaka, who called the incident “a big boo boo,” then explained that he really meant to have his home phone number appear in the ad—not because using his office number gave the appearance that the event was state-sponsored, but “because the game is here on Maui; it’s not on Oahu.” It proved a moot point— nine months later the state Ethics Commission dismissed the charge.

MONDAY, JUN. 21 He doesn’t have the 18 million signs plastered all over the island like his gay-baiting Republican opponent Mike Gabbard, but incumbent congressman Ed Case (D, pretty much everywhere except Honolulu) can still get his name out the old fashioned way—free congressional franking privileges! I’m speaking of course of Case’s glossy 2004 Congressional Report that arrived in my mail this weekend with the drug store coupons and my credit card bill. One of its features: “A few highlights” of the 108th Congress. And by “few,” he meant “38.” Most are pretty vague—“Advocated for nation’s small businesses”—but a few are specific, like “Opposed ANWR drilling” in Alaska. And some are incredibly specific: “Introduced/secured enactment of law to designate postal facility at Paia, Maui as Patsy Takemoto Mink Post Office Building.” But the funniest part of the newsletter is the photo of Case in a tuxedo going to an “event addressing national Asian and Pacific Islander issues.” Unless one of the “issues” was proper champagne and caviar protocol, I think Case was a bit overdressed.

TUESDAY, JUN. 22 Maui News reporter Harry Eagar recites a lot of brutal military history in an attempt to show that the 1949 Geneva Conventions outlawing torture and killing prisoners never helped American soldiers, and are thus useless. “The American policy has been to treat prisoners it held leniently, even when it didn’t have to,” Eagar wrote today, trying to show that while our enemies may have lopped off our heads or shot our nurses,

we always gave them a warm bed to sleep in and plenty of chocolate bars. This is disingenuous nonsense. American soldiers during the war proved just as skilled as their enemies at violating the laws of war. In 1946, The Atlantic Monthly ran a piece by Edgar L. Jones, who saw action in North Africa, the merchant marine and the Pacific. “What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought, anyway?” he asked. “We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled the flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter openers. We topped off our saturation bombing and burning of enemy civilians by dropping atomic bombs on two nearly defenseless cities, thereby setting an all-time record for instantaneous mass slaughter.” If this was “lenient,” I’d hate to see what Eagar considers out of bounds… Doughnut giant Krispy Kreme just announced that it will now sell frozen blend drinks at the Kahului store. Flavors include Frozen Double Chocolate, Frozen Raspberry and Frozen Original Kreme. Mmmm… Frozen Original—wait, what was that again? Frozen Original Kreme? Isn’t that like drinking a nice frosty glass of glaze? Who thought that was a good idea?

WEDNESDAY, JUN. 23 A mainland friend emails me today saying the Los Angeles Times ran a piece yesterday saying sea turtles are threatening us all. No, I said, the largest and most powerful newspaper west of the Rockies wouldn’t write anything so lame and insanely stupid. Look it up, he said.

OVERHEARD... “I AM SO SCARED OF SHARKS THAT WHEN I HAD A POOL BACK IN FLORIDA, IF I’D JUST SEEN AN IMAGE OF A SHARK THAT DAY, I’D FREAK MYSELF OUT AND HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE WATER.” -Guy talking at Fish & Game Brewing Co. bar, Jun. 24

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

No way, I said. Look, just do it, he said. Why don’t you make me, I said. That ended it, but then I looked it up anyway. Turns out he was right. Titled “Gentle giants and free-floating fear,” Times columnist Pete Thomas wrote about how he was snorkeling at Napili Bay recently and saw some sea turtles and then got scared that a tiger shark was going to get him because “a local peddler of turtle art warned earlier, ‘More turtles only means more tiger sharks.’” The story ended when a tiger shark neither appeared nor consumed Thomas.

THURSDAY, JUN. 24 Smith Development’s proposed Pu’unoa Village—shot down last year by the Maui County Council—is back and it’s more affordable than ever! In fact, it may just be the affordablest West Maui housing project around! It’s also bigger than it’s ever been, with 14 more houses, which is great news for anyone—like Mayor Alan Arakawa—who thought planting

The Maui County Division of Motor Vehicles has decided to cut the driver’s license road test from 42 minutes to 20 and generally try to make it easier for folks to pass the test, mostly by ending the time-honored practice of having examiners penalize applicants for doing things that are completely legal… The U.S. government is spending more than $400 billion each year on the military, which includes wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, Star Wars ballistic missile defense, espionage and assorted anti-terror stuff which may actually violate our civil rights, to say nothing of the proposed untold billions Dubya wants to throw down on some kind of space mission to Mars. Now, according to an Associated Press story in today’s Maui News—buried on pg. A9, where readers are sure not to find it—Medicare will be holding a nationwide “lottery” in which 50,000 lucky “winners” will get the government to “help pay” for their cancer, multiple sclerosis or other dread disease medicine. And who thought it up this unbelievable plan? Your Republican-controlled Congress! Now that’s just wonderful. You know what, all this generosity has really started to affect me. In fact, I think I’ll hold my own lottery. If you still believe the federal government cares about its citizens, send an email to letters@mauitime.com with the words “Suckers Contest” written on the subject line. Like the plan from last year, Kent Smith has decided to go down the “fast track” Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii (HCDCH) road, which exempts him from the usual environmental assessment requirements and gives the county council just 45 days from the time the state signs off on the plan to approve it or kill it. This is an interesting strategy for Smith, considering that last year the 45-day rule was one of the reasons the council showed him the door.

FISH BLINDS?

A BRIDGE TOO FAR

“Fishermen” using pistols, shotguns and assault rifles are permitted on two U.S. lakes (in Vermont and Virginia) for a few weeks each spring to fire away at pike and several other species, according to a May report in The New York Times. Sportsmen (who wait in tree “fish blinds”) aim just in front of their prey to kill by concussion because a direct hit renders the fish inedible. The relatively few shooters are so avid that attempts to ban the activity have gone nowhere.

Alaska is reputed to be the state most laden with congressional overspending (thanks to its powerful U.S. Rep. Don Young and U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens), and an April New York Times dispatch described two proposed, marginally useful bridges for the state that will eventually cost taxpayers more than $2.2 billion. One, almost as big as the Golden Gate bridge, would connect Ketchikan (pop. 7,800) with a 50-resident island and the town’s modest airport (and would replace a five-minute ferry boat ride), and the other, a 2-mile-long span, would connect Anchorage, according to the Times, to “a port that has a single regular tenant and almost no homes or businesses.”

DEMOCRACY BLUES The West Virginia secretary of state ordered the polls still to be open in the town of Littleton for the June 8 municipal election, even though no candidates ran for any of the seven offices and write-ins were disqualified. (The town itself will probably disband.) And in May, former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, who presided over the state’s 2000 presidential recount, revealed that her absentee ballot in a March 2004 local election was not counted because she forgot to sign it. And in March, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, trying to persuade traditionalist men to let women register to vote, said in a speech, “Please, my dear brothers, let your wives and sisters go to the voter registration process. Later, you can control who she votes for, but please, let her go.”

COME ON DOWN! According to an April New York Times dispatch, the quiz show The Mission, on the satellite TV channel of Lebanese militants Hezbollah, challenges contestants in categories such as naming Arab suicide bombers, with the winner receiving points toward the game’s ultimate destination, “Jerusalem,” the retaking of which is a unifying theme of all the channel’s programs.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW WERE ART In April, London’s National Portrait Gallery showed an hour-long video of star soccer player David Beckham, sleeping; artist Sam Taylor-Wood said she wanted to do an original of the ubiquitously photographed Beckham and realized there was not much that hadn’t already been done. And at a March exhibit at London’s Nelson’s Column, guest performers took turns reading Japanese artist On Kawara’s book that consists only of 271,000 selected dates that occurred between 998,031 B.C. and A.D. 1,001,980. Said a gallery director, “On Kawara’s work speaks simply and directly about a subject relevant to us all, the passage and marking of time.”

Breaking the Bank Ending debt in developing countries July 1 marks a birthday most people around the world won’t be celebrating. That day will mark the 60th year of the international financial institutions created at the Bretton Woods Conference in New Hampshire. These institutions—notably the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—have created havoc among developing countries, forcing them to privatize industries and cut government to secure development loans. But one movement, born of spiritual principles, has emerged on the world stage aiming at an entirely different goal: Guarantee basic human rights and fundamental freedoms. This movement intends to do this through a combination of grassroots advocacy and analysis of the Bretton Woods institutions and their so-called “structural adjustment programs.” Jubilee USA Network began in 1997. It brings together interfaith coalitions as well as labor, environment, human rights, economic justice and solidarity movements to fulfill the ethical principle enshrined in Leviticus—replacing debt enslavement with economic and spiritual empowerment.

The movement aims for the complete cancellation of any debt owed by poor nations and an end to the austerity measures these nations had to institute in order to get the debt in the first place. The message of Jubilee inspires people around the world to demand their government reflect the ancient idea that debt is fundamentally illegitimate, immoral and illegal. For instance, Africa pays a stunning $15 billion in debt service each year. This is more than the continent annually receives in aid, new loans and investments. In the Asia-Pacific region, the Philippines’ debt service accounts for almost half of its annual budget, which ends up amounting to double what the government spends on social services for its citizens. Debt service grinds down individuals in these regions, keeping them from combating historical wrongs or even addressing new political and social possibilities like simple democracy. Nigeria, which has had to exist under the fist of numerous dictatorial regimes for the past decade, has so far borrowed $5 billion, paid $16 billion and still owes $12 billion. The debt looks meaningless until you realize that because so much of their treasuries are dedicated to repaying international bankers,

Front Street’s

If only international loans were this simple nations like Nigeria put aside basic services such as access to clean water, adequate housing and basic health care. Add that to the fact that future generations will also have to pay the bankers and you have one bad situation. “Debt is tearing down schools, clinics and hospitals and the effects are no less devastating than war,” says Dr. Adabayo Adedeji of the African Center for Development Strategy. The solution is to call on the World Bank and the IMF to cancel 100 percent of the debts owed by impoverished countries. Naturally, the World Bank and IMF oppose this idea, claiming to be poverty stricken and unable financially to survive such a reversal. In fact, the Debt and Development Coalition of Ireland recently released a report claiming the international financial institutions are

holding enormous annual earnings and huge reserves. The report details how World Bank profits increased from $1.2 billion in 1996 to $5.3 billion in 2003. There is reason to be hopeful. In Jubilee’s short existence, it has successfully lobbied the U.S. Congress to spend $769 million to cover the costs of bilateral and multilateral debt relief. With more control and access of state resources as a result of debt relief, health and education spending in debtor nations has increased 40 to

90 percent. But beyond the issue of debt cancellation is the need to democratize the international financial institutions. That’s the only way to instill accountability and ensure policies take human rights into account. Under no circumstances should the World Bank or IMF ever initiate projects unless the welfare of the affected nation’s citizens is taken into consideration. And no funds should ever go to authoritarian regimes. Both the lender and borrowers must be responsible to recover resources diverted by corrupt governments. There should be a commitment toward the emergence of global economic policies and trade rules that promote sustainable human development—not the usual destructive cycles of indebtedness. MTW

The lawyering of the Saddam-Al Qaeda connection In the fall of 2002, less than a third of Americans believed that Iraq posed a threat to the United States. So George W. Bush developed a strategy for selling a war to a recalcitrant public. In statement after statement, Administration officials created the impression that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. Their plan worked. By the time American tanks rumbled across the Kuwaiti-Iraqi border, 70 percent of Americans thought we were avenging 9/11. A year later, the 9/11 Commission has concluded there is “no credible evidence” of a Saddam-Al Qaeda link. Accused of lying about an Iraqi role in 9/11 as well as WMDs, Republicans are making a startlingly Orwellian defense: Bush & Co. never said what we heard them say.

tion to Congress is “including.” He asserts that armed force is justified “against international terrorists and terrorist organizations.” Everything after “including” is optional, i.e., non-conditional. Broken down to its essentials, Bush said: “I can go after terrorists, including those responsible for 9/11, but I can also go after terrorists who were not responsible for 9/11.” Given the context—a notice to Congress that he is about to attack Iraq—he intended us to draw the inference that Iraq played a role in 9/11. But, strictly speaking, he doesn’t say that Iraq is included among those who carried out 9/11. His statement has been carefully lawyered to create “plausible deniability” if and when, as has happened, such an assertion is belied by the facts. But Bush does clearly assert that Iraq is tied to “international terrorists and terrorist organizations.” This section relates to payments

Saddam made to survivors of Palestinian suicide bombers who died in attacks in Israel— not the United States. If the average American knew in March 2003 that Iraq had only been involved in terrorism against Israel, but never against the United States or any other country, he wouldn’t have viewed Saddam as a threat. Bush “fuzzed up” the differences between referring specific terrorism against Israel and terrorism in general, hoping that no one would notice the difference. No one did. White House lawyers applied similar legalese to every official pre-war statement so that, when the truth eventually came out, Bush & Co. could deny having tied Saddam to 9/11. Ordinary citizens, who quickly scan the headlines and get their news from TV, would draw the desired— incorrect—conclusion. Yet “plausible deniability” was in place as a future defense. Any news junkie with some experience reading legal documents can extract the elusive truth from a Bush quote. On June 17, for example, Bush said that Saddam had “provided safe haven for a terrorist like [Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab] Zarqawi, who is still killing innocents inside of Iraq.” Actually, Zarqawi never lived in Saddam’s Iraq; he arrived after the U.S. invasion. This statement elevates the craft of creating intentionally confusing syntax to dazzlingly cynical new heights. Polls confirm that such convoluted verbiage has convinced a plurality of Americans, 49 to 36 percent, that “clear evidence that Iraq was supporting Al Qaeda has been found.” It’s all so beautifully postmodern: all of the Bushies’ lies are true. Technically. MTW

REPUBLICANS ARE MAKING A STARTLINGLY ORWELLIAN DEFENSE: BUSH & CO. NEVER SAID WHAT WE HEARD THEM SAY. “The press wants to run out and say there’s a fundamental split here now between what the president said and what the [9/11] commission said,” complains Dick Cheney. “And there’s no conflict. What they were addressing was whether or not [the Iraqis] were involved in 9/11. And there they found no evidence to support that proposition. I’ve watched a lot of the coverage on it and the fact of the matter is [the press] don’t make a distinction. They fuzz it up.” Someone’s been fuzzing like a madman, but the media has merely been taking dictation. On Mar. 21, 2003, days before the start of war, Bush sent a letter to Congress justifying the imminent invasion: “I have also determined that the use of armed force against Iraq is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.” But on June 16, 2004, Bush said: “This administration never said that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated between Saddam and Al Qaeda.” Sam Boone-Lutz wrote a letter to the editor of The New York Times pointing to these two statements. “Explain to me,” he asks, “how [the June 16, 2004] statement isn’t a lie.” This is your lucky day, Sam. Parsing statements from the current White House is impossible without a strong background in sentence diagramming. The key word in Bush’s Mar. 21, 2003 justifica-

Dr. Doom! Entering the strange world of Ed Dames Preparing for a meeting with Ed Dames would panic the most rational person. He’s a retired U.S. Army major and former secret military psychic spy, affectionately called Dr. Doom for his predictions of Earth’s future devastation. He’s made himself a frequent guest on the incredibly popular Art Bell radio show. On the show he comes off as a shadowy figure, steeped in a Jedi world of mind-reading spooks, rarely giving direct answers but always hinting that the end of the world is just around the corner. “Is he going to know what I am thinking?” I keep asking myself. There are masses of web pages devoted to him. Some, like www.remoteview.org and www.strangehaze.com, describe him using the words “arrogant,” “angry” and “crazy.” I couldn’t sleep for three nights before meeting this guy. But, what an opportunity I would have missed if I had surrendered to my fears. By Tuesday afternoon when we are scheduled to meet, I am running on E and chock full of nervousness. Standing outside the Kahului Starbucks waiting for Dames to arrive, with just a vague idea of what he might look like from a picture on the Internet, I see a short, blondehaired man walking back to his old white Jeep Cherokee. “That could be him,” I say to myself. But in a blue Aloha shirt and sandals, the man looks more like a windsurfer than a retired Army Major and for a second I lose the thought. Then he locks his car and heads in my direction. “Jaime?” he asks. I nod, still nervous, knowing he can sense my uneasiness despite my trying to mask it. “Hi, I’m Ed Dames,” he says with a smile and a firm handshake. “Thanks for agreeing to meet with me, Major Dames,” I reply coolly. “The pleasure is mine,” he says, opening the door. “Shall we get something to drink?” We make our way quickly to the cashier, me following in his very fast footsteps. His interaction with the young woman behind the counter is friendly and polite. We grab our drinks and decide on a table. “I usually don’t do interviews with people from smaller papers,” Dames says as he pulls out a chair for me to sit down. “But because you’re from my home, I am glad to do it.” He makes himself comfortable in the single beam of sun radiating through the cafe window. We’re not far into the conversation when I realize that, at about 5 feet 5 inches with stark white-blonde hair, sky blue eyes, contagious laughter and eloquent soft speech, Dames seems less of a threat than a newborn infant, even after his explanation that sometime in the next 10 years a series of solar flares, which he has coined Killshot, will hit Earth and cause millions of casualties. “In terms of responsibility, [Killshot] eclipses everything else, including finding Osama Bin Laden and pinpointing nuclear terrorism,” Dames says, shifting his gaze from the passerby outside to my eyes. “I’ve been at the very top of the military hierarchy and I am very highly decorated and I know what the military can and can’t do, and they can’t do this.” Then his voice gets even softer as he leans across the table. “They are going to fail and millions of people are going to lose their lives.” I sipped my Frappacino. He opted for black coffee.

From Coast to Coast with Art Bell, May 31, 1996, posted on www.mindcontrolforums.com: Art Bell: What about the climate, you know, arguably the hurricane season and now the tornado season have been horrible! I mean absolutely horrible. Ed Dames: Yeah, we’re looking at—uh, before our study, we did not realize how delicately balanced the earth’s environment

was, we assumed that it could re-establish homeostasis or equilibrium quite easily after drastic changes but that was not true. I was amazed at how delicately balanced the planet was, um, the ecosphere. The geophysics. Bell: Right. Dames: And, uh, looks like the atmosphere is degrading, very rapidly, at timelines that we thought were out in the decades and now within a decade… Jet stream moves about 300 mph, but it will produce cat—chaotic effects, among those probably, uh, microbursts and other things, it’ll pick up a lot of dust, there’ll be a lot of dust and very dark skies. The vicissitudes of these weather changes will preclude growing crops the way we have ever grown them before. Either you grow them underground, or in very solid buildings, or in hermetically sealed unitsBell: How… how… how close to this are we? Dames: … I’d say we’re looking at about four to six years between where the stuff really hits the fan…

Aside from being known for these predictions of Earth’s demise, the 54-year-old Wailea resident and free-diver is regarded by many as the world’s foremost remote viewing instructor. First developed by a man named Ingo Swann under military guidance in the 1970s for the purpose of psychic spying, remote viewing is systematic clairvoyance—a technique that teaches the unconscious to communicate with the conscious to gain information on an otherwise inaccessible target, in the past, present or future. In his book Remote Viewers: The Secret History of America’s Psychic Spies, Jim Schnabel recounts how remote viewers led the military to find Soviet submarines, missing downed U.S. aircraft and complete interior descriptions of Soviet military research facilities. “Once you learn remote viewing, you can never look at the world the same way because you know that you can know anything,” Dames tells me. “There aren’t any secrets.” Dames says that it’s through the use and perfection of these remote viewing techniques he learned in the military that he can see impending catastrophes. But he also claims that remote viewing can save future generations of the human race. “There’s a big thing coming and we need to be armed,” Dames warns me again. “We can’t do what we’ve been doing.” For more than 20 years, Dames has been teaching adults around the world how to remote view. One of his most recent workshops was held at the Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei on May 15 and 16. But Dames says he’s found that adults are a “lost cause” and is now shifting his teaching to kids. “My generation, your parents’ generation, we’ve made all this,” he says gesturing outside to the hustle and bustle. “And we’re going down. We haven’t evolved at all, that’s bullshit. I’m only concerned with the children now, because if we want to change the world, we have to change the education. Teaching remote viewing to children allows them to see the truth. You’re not dealing with a closed mind like you are when you teach an adult.” Whoa, I tell him, this sounds like a Pinky and the Brain scheme to take over the world.

By Jaime Cherundolo

“What I’m telling you is, this generation of kids are the ones who will have to re-build the planet,” he says. “Remote viewing may be a Pandora’s box, but my gut feeling is that it’s a good thing to live in a world without secrets.”

From Coast to Coast with Art Bell, Jun. 14, 1996, posted on www.mindcontrolforums.com: Bell: Well, let me tell you a little story about Gordon Cooper, the astronaut. He said that he was at um, Edwards Air Force Base when a military film team was filming something or another... and they were out on a flight line, and they saw a craft come down, three legs extend, the damn thing landed on the ground, they kept rolling, they had film of it, this is, this is Gordon Cooper now, and they started moving toward this craft, it rose into the air, the three landing uh, um, wheels or whatever it was extended into the craft and it just shot straight up. Well, they had all this on film, they sent it to Washington, according to Cooper, where it disappeared for all time. Dames: Well, that sounds like one of ours. We, we had, we’ve had things like that for many years. Why do you think the uh, the really, we retired the Air Force SR-71, what do you think we replaced that with? We’ve been testing little objects like that with tripod landing gears for quite a while. What aliens use are something very, very different, Art, and uh, it doesn’t look like thatBell: Good point, and after all, it did come down at Edwards, which is an Air Force Base. Dames: That’s correct.

One of the secrets Dames says he’s trying to reveal is the reason for the 1979 Washington state disappearance of 12year-old Christina White. With the help of eight volunteer remote viewers he has trained—“they can run rings around the best psychics in the world,” Dames tells me—he will travel to Washington this July in an attempt to recover the remains of the missing girl who, like most missing girls her age, is suspected of being abducted, raped and murdered. “We used our techniques to find her remains, and now we have to go in and physically find them on the ground,” Dames says. “At this point, she is just missing and there is no evidence to prove she is anything other than missing. We are going to have to do that before we can go after the murderer.” This is the sixth missing case Dames says he and his team have tackled. He says they have had about a 40 percent success rate. At first joking that it’s because of his blond hair, Dames then attributes it to law enforcement’s inability to find evidence on the ground linking the murderer to the victim. “Even if we can pinpoint her murderer, which we have done in another case in Oregon, unless there’s evidence, they walk,” he says with disappointment. “And because they are usually serial killers, they’ll do it again.” Dames says he has received “IN TERMS OF RESPONSIBILITY, renowned fame in Japan for tackling [KILLSHOT] ECLIPSES EVERYTHING the same kind of missing children cases and for assisting Japanese law ELSE, INCLUDING FINDING OSAMA LADEN AND PINPOINTING enforcement with organized crime. He BIN says a television network there is fund- NUCLEAR TERRORISM,” DAMES ing his work. SAYS, SHIFTING HIS GAZE FROM THE “In my cases in Japan, where most of my successes occur,” he tells me as PASSERBY OUTSIDE TO MY EYES. if it were an unconceivable idea, “I’m a well known TV star and I solve missing children cases and a lot of organized crime cases. There, they are a very receptive environment and a very supportive environment. I get a lot of support from the police, the media and the parents. I don’t find that in America—on the mainland.” But the American mainstream seems to be latching on to the idea of remote viewing. Dames says he will be going on the road with Oprah soon and has been asked to do a 60 Minutes interview. “The remote viewing thing is about to go boom,” Dames says, his eyes widening when he says the last word. “I always knew it would around this time, and it’s right on schedule.” Even Tom Cruise has latched on to the remote viewing frenzy Dames began. Cruise produced the upcoming thriller Suspect Zero, scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 27. The film centers on an FBI remote viewer hunting for a serial killer. Dames worked as technical adviser, helped edit the screenplay and even secured a bit part. Three guesses on what he ended up playing. “I was supposed to just be a technical adviser but then they say ‘we want you to play yourself,’” Dames tells me with disbelief. “But I tell them I’m not an actor and they say, ‘Well, we’re gonna give you some classes tonight.’ So I did this and I have a cameo role as an FBI remote viewing instructor, and well, they give you a big screen credit. They didn’t have to do that, but it was very nice of them and the whole thing was a lot of fun. “I’m not gonna give up my day job,” he says, “but it was a lot of fun.” By the end of our two-hour meeting, there were two things I just had to know: What was it like living with the weight of the world on your shoulders, and where will Ed Dames be when Killshot hits? “There is a lot of dark in the world, but there is also a lot of light,” he says in response to the first question. “I have more than I ever wanted out of life so I try to give something back. You can’t give back to God, that’s not possible, so I try to give back to other people. It feels good to help other people. And at the end of everyday, and this is no lie, I stand in front of the mirror and I ask myself, ‘Did you do the best you could do?’ and as long as the answer is yes, I am okay.” As for the day Killshot hits... “Hapa’s would probably be a good place to be,” he says as we make our way to the door. The crowd is expanding rapidly. People are growing impatient at the hold up. Naturally, the crowd attracts a larger crowd, which blocks the aisles. I begin to worry about children being caught underfoot and crushed. The scene is starting to resemble one of those sordid rugby affairs in Britain. Clearly, the situation is getting out of control. It takes forever for Esther’s microwave to beep, letting us know the “Smart Meat Filet Minion” is now ready for consumption. But wait? What’s this? We must now wait agonizing minutes while Esther tediously cuts the meat into manageable portions, then places the steaming meat onto small doilies. She serves with reckless abandon, perilously ignoring the “first come, first serve rule” that is a staple of sample etiquette. I take my portion from Esther’s hands and flee the scene, lest the carnivores invoke some kind of food riot. Welcome to Costco, the place to eat if you don’t want to spend any money. And don’t mind big crowds. Or small portions. I find myself at the outpost called “Tyson Mesquite Chicken Grills.” The atmosphere is more subdued. Apparently the Mesquite Chicken is less of a crowd pleaser then the Smart Meat. As Rene cuts the food into portions with orange handled desk scissors, a middle-aged, yuppie dad and his kids join me. But there is now just one piece of Mesquite Chicken Grill left. One piece. I was here first, I rationalize. Surely he is familiar with the “First come, first served rule?” We both reach for the sample. He shoots me a look that says, “Hey man, I got kids.” I let him have the piece. Onward I forge. People who shop at Costco have a glazed sort of heroin-addict look in their eyes. The bounty of available merchandise must numb the senses, so these bulk zombies stumble along, staring into space. They pass big screen TV sets playing Little Nemo, giant tubs of cookie dough, the Electric Light Orchestra box sets and the sleazy Danielle Steele paperbacks. Together, the other customers and I form a collective of dazed consumerism in a jungle of gigantic trampolines and field of clothes. The place is like a warehouse, so we all look like tiny humans, scurrying as if shrunk by a diabolical scientist’s ray gun. The architectural design of Costco— “giant square box”—is reminiscent of antiquated industrial structures of old Soviet cities like Vladivostok or Almaty.

Samplerrific! In between dodging careening forklifts, wayward children, ankle snapping carts and other obstacles, I notice the stern glare of Dr. Phil, looking up at me from the cover of a book, admonishing me for some unknown transgression. I sample wildly. Down the hatch goes Kikkoman Brand Soy Sauce, Snapple Meal Replacement, Bar-B-Q Hot Pockets, Oreo Cookies (meticulously broken in two to prevent, I suppose, excessive sampling), some sort of grainy “healthy bread,” Soy Milk and chalky health bars. But now the once bountiful sample stands are becoming scarce. Have I reached the end of the line? Crestfallen, I sulk toward the restroom as the army of samples I have just consumed unleash a coup in my belly. Then I notice those familiar red and white checkers. It can only mean one thing: more samples. The pull is irresistible. Perhaps it is some sort of dessert, ice cream, or cheesecake. Or world cuisine—a burrito would be nice right now. Perhaps something more exotic, something I have never sampled before. There is no crowd in sight so whatever they are giving away will be all mine. I can hardly wait to see what loot awaits me. It’s laundry soap. MTW

EMPLOYEE OF THE

WEEK BY JAIME CHERUNDOLO

Charlene Tabaco Co-Owner, Char & Allen’s Ono Kine Grindz Lunch Wagon We bought the wagon in December and started selling in March. I had worked for Northwest Airlines since I was 19. I’m 39 now, and after 9/11 I got laid off. I didn’t want another unstable job and I couldn’t work in an office because I was used to traveling, so I decided to be my own boss. My cousin called me one day and said “There’s a lunch wagon for sale,” so we decided to try it. My boyfriend Allen Vierra takes care of the books, loads up my wagon and does the maintenance. I do the cooking, ordering, selling and faxing menus. I just make the normal local foods I used to make for dinner, the stuff I learned as a kid. A lot of it is my recipes—Allen’s mom’s recipes, my helper Tammy’s recipes. We come up with a menu weekly, get feedback and figure out what to make again and how soon. I got regular customers who I know what soda they’re gonna have, what dressing they want on their salads. I see these people everyday. Sometimes I think, “God, don’t these people ever pack their lunch?” Most of my customers are industrial workers out in the middle of nowhere with only 30 minutes for lunch. They just need food and they’re pretty much all local people so plate lunch is perfect. You got your meat, your starch, your mac salad. I try to make things interesting too, though, because people get tired of mac salad. I have five to eight stops a day, starting at 9:45 a.m. We prepare enough for 100 plates and still I’ve been selling out. When that happens, I just call the next stop and say, “Sorry, we ran out.” Sometimes I have sandwiches for them, but they know I am just a lunch wagon, not a restaurant. I can’t just go in the back and whip something up. HC&S and Ameron is my favorite stop. I have a whopping line there. If I’m two minutes late, I’m screwed. You know how it is when you see my menu and think you’re gonna have hamburger steak. I make killer hamburger steak, not to brag, but mine is the best, so I can’t be late. MTW

Contrasting Looks at the Sensual

Live Music Broadcasts!

Men and women at the Hui No’eau Sensuality surrounds me as I step into the Hui No’eau’s exhibit space. The sophisticated understatement of Rick Allred’s black and white photographs adorn the white walls of the first room. His exhibit, Sensual Zen, is an exploration of male sensuality revealing the strength and grace of the male form. Passing into the naturally lit second room on a sunny day, I experience a blast

of color and shapes in marked contrast to the calm of Sensual Zen. There, K.C. Smith examines female sensuality in blown glass. Her pieces are vibrant, radiate with the sun’s light and are alive with color. The two distinct yet complementary exhibits celebrate eroticism creatively and casually. The contrast struck me as I passed from Allred’s testosterone fueled black and whites to Smith’s playful, bright feminine beauty. The intention became apparent immediately.

This is Allred’s first solo show. His photographs run from solemn and pensive to humorous to metaphysical. His show is organically erotic, not contrived to shock or titillate. “There is a gray area between art and pornography,” says Allred. “Male nudity is not so prevalent. Here the models relaxed and expressed something unplanned. They showed the softer, more calm side we don’t often get to see. To me, the soft side and spiritual strength of male beauty is elusive in the art world… I am passionate about translating the images in my mind into real and surreal life imagery.” Two photographs shown side-by-side, “Release Suffering” and “Become a New Soul,” examine the metaphysical, but were actually born of laughter. “Release Suffering” is abstract and ethereal with squiggly lines—made by a flashlight—blurring a man’s face. “He is actually laughing, but could be suffering,” says Allred. “Laughter releases most pain for me.” “Become a New Soul” shows the subject coming out of darkness into light. This is one of Allred’s favorite lighting techniques, and he uses it throughout the show. Here it is symbolic—the trails of his body look as though he is stepping through the whole wheel of birth and death. “After you release suffering you can step into a new path,” says Allred. “You don’t have to die to reincarnate. You can release the past and start a new life. Once you make the commitment it keeps getting easier.” Smith’s “Fragile Impressions” celebrates the female form with color, humor and pizzazz, all exquisitely rendered in glass. But Smith’s show is complex, much as first impressions are as fragile as glass until a per-

Rick Allen & K.C. Smith son looks deeper. The viewer is bombarded with color and alluring shapes but there is more there for those who take the time to look. “I had them open up the windows to let the light though,” says Smith. “I want people to be surrounded by color and light. I want people to get something from it, to laugh and to have fun.” Smith examines, with a good dose of humor, women’s sensuality and how they fit into the world. In her artist’s statement she says, “The roles I play in life are a strong influence and motivation in my work. Through my art, I provide a humorous opinion of my female experience at this moment in time.” Little statues like “Miss Interpretation,” “Feeling Pink” and her charming recounting of a first date demonstrate her comical approach. “I like to see the female figure as strong but comical in a way, sexual but humorous,” she tells me. “On the application to the Hui I wrote that I wanted to portray women as ‘sexual beasts.’ I want to put them in a power position. There is no ‘woe is me’ style here. I like the powerful, but humorous approach.” In “Breast Etchings,” she paints distinct breasts on glass and mounts them on wood. Women come in various shapes and sizes, so each of her pieces is unique. Smith explores many avenues with the three dimensional medium. The piece that grabs the attention most is “Naughty or Nice.” “It is big and in the middle,” she says. “I wanted people to gravitate toward these pieces.” Four large, bright vases of blown glass occupy the center of the room, but the viewer has to look close to get the joke. Each has a small etching of an animal. One is called “Cock,” another “Pussy,” and then there is “Bitch” and “Stud.” At the base is the dictionary definition for each of these double entendres. “I got the idea from the books I read my two-year-old son,” she says. “They say cock for rooster or pussy for cat, but that is not what comes to my mind. He is so innocent, but adult language has a totally different meaning. It is a funny thing to talk about in our society— the meaning of different words to different people and ages.” The exhibit will run until Aug. 20 at the Hui No’eau at 2841 Baldwin Ave. in Makawao. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Spidey’s Back Web-slinging sequel bests the genre Since the phenomenal $820 million international success of the first SpiderMan movie, the filmmakers have gone back to the drawing board to improve on their technical shortcomings and, more importantly, generate a top-notch script by screenwriter Alvin Sargent (Ordinary People). The glorious result is a careful blend of subtext rich characters responding to one another and their surroundings in a colorful action movie embellished with musical grace notes from West Side Story thanks to Danny Elfman’s subtle score. Tobey Maguire again inhabits the role of the emotionally conflicted web-slinging crime fighter, with Kirsten Dunst returning to her role as Peter Parker’s thespian love interest Mary Jane Watson. There are plenty of surprises in this entertaining Hollywood cartoon-inspired movie that tops everything else in the genre.

Spider-Man 2

★★★★★ Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) has become a more assured and patient director since he made the first Spider-Man movie. It’s a shift toward maturity that’s reflected in returning cast members Maguire, Dunst, and James Franco. Where the young actors had everything to prove in the first movie, they now have a confident handle on their characters’ personal objectives and outward goals. Maguire’s Peter Parker spends much of Spider-Man 2 looking askance at his alter ego, and takes a hiatus from wall crawling long enough to boost his college grades and sit in the audience for Mary Jane’s telling performance in a production of The Importance of Being Earnest. The movie opens with an impoverished Peter Parker struggling to deliver timelimited pizzas around Manhattan on his aged moped. But even when Parker tries to use his Spidey powers to speed things along, he has to take time out to save a couple of children from being run over by a truck. The computer-aided scenes of Spider-Man swinging from Manhattan high-rises are vastly improved since his last theatrical outing, and audiences will take special joy in the flawless acrobatics on display. The filmmakers make an obvious joke later in the movie about damage to Maguire’s back that threatened to table him from participating in the sequel. Spidey takes some pretty big falls. Peter Parker’s college grades are suffering when he chooses to do a thesis paper on Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina— Frida), a genius scientist working on a

Is he flicking me off? source of perpetual energy through sustained fusion, thanks to funding from Harry Osborn (James Franco). Since Spider-Man killed his father in the first movie, Osborn has become consumed with capturing the web-crawling vigilante, to the point of becoming an alcoholic. Spidey gets a another enemy when Doc Ock’s exhibition of his new machine backfires, and the scientist is left with four enormous steel tentacles permanently attached to his spine—hence the name Dr. Octopus. Peter Parker and his Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) are interrupted during a visit to a bank for a loan when Doc Ock arrives to rob the place. The ensuing battle finds Aunt May in Doc Ock’s grip atop the tall building with Spider-Man battling gravity as he fearlessly fights the evil doctor to save his cherished Aunt. The sequence is remarkable for its guiding elements of humor and pathos amid all of the eye-candy action. A nagging question in the film arises from a problem Parker has with producing webbing. Spider-Man comes up short in the web department on several occasions, and even goes to a doctor about his waning supply of the sticky stuff. The question is never completely explained, and while it gives the character one more flaw for audiences to trouble over, it sits as unfinished business. Nonetheless, the movie offers plenty of fantastic spectacles-see Spider-Man stop a speeding subway train-and more than a few subtle comic references. Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell does a cool stint as a bothersome theater usher, and Willem Dafoe makes a witty appearance as the ghost of his former self. Even the budding romance between Peter and Mary Jane is handled with an eye toward the absurd. Spider-Man tells Mary Jane, as he protects her from a falling steel wall, “it’s heavy.” Indeed, there’s plenty of irony, surprises and cheeky fun in store in this satisfying sequel. Rated PG-13. 127 mins. MTW

Harry Potter dynasty of children’s books, this storyline evolves around Harry’s inability to tame the beast within him, as he goes on the run, not realizing that he is also being chased by a renegade wizard played by sexy master villain Gary Oldman (hello? Bram Stoker’s Dracula?).

Wednesday, July 7

THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya?

Stateside 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Ricki Lee Jones and Elvis Costello provide the soundtrack to what the Hollywood Reporter describes as a "startling and compelling usagainst-the-world" romance. Jonathan Tucker (The Deep End), and Rachel Leigh Cook (She's All That) star, and Val Kilmer (The Doors) and Joe Mantegna (Joan of Arcadia) are featured in this tale of a privileged teenager who falls in love with an offbeat musician whose sexual escapades provide the turning points in this "unexpected and unpredictable and so full of tiny grace notes" (Washington Post) story of the triumph of love and youth. Rated R. 97 min.

New This Week SPIDERMAN 2 (PG13) ScienceFiction/Adventure - Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). See Film Critique.

Now Showing AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - (PG) Action/Adventure - This Jules Verne classic stars Jackie Chan—Jackie Chan!—as Passepartout, the Chinese thief and Steve Coogan as British adventurer Phileas Fogg. Considering that Chan does a lot of his trademark kicking and jumping and kicking while in the act of jumping, we’re guessing the studio strayed a bit from Verne’s original storyline.

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL Castle Theater, 572-3456 Stateside - R - Wed 5, 7:30 pm

MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX Maui Mall, 249–2222 (Showtimes) = Matinee All My Life - NR - Th (11:30, 2, 4:20), 7:10, 9:40, Fr-W (12:10, 2:35, 4:50), 7:15, 9:45 Sa-Su (12:10, 2:35), 4:50, 7:15, 9:45 Around The World In 80 Days - PG - Th-Fr, M-W, (11:30, 1, 2:15, 4, 5), 7, 9:45, Sa-Su (11:30, 1, 2:15), 4, 5, 7, 9:45

SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! THE STEPFORD WIVES - (PG13) - Comedy - A remake of the 1975 suspense classic about a creepy upper-class suburb—actually, aren’t all suburbs kinda creepy?—where all the wives are seemingly “perfect,” but are actually just the submissive robots their creepy husbands have replaced their real wives with. All-star cast features Nicole Kidman, Mathew Broderick, Faith Hill, Christopher Walken and Bette Midler. THE TERMINAL - (PG13) - Drama - Steven Spielberg directs Tom Hanks as some Eastern European guy who gets stranded in an airport terminal because his country ceases to exist. It’s a light-hearted film, which is odd considering it’s based on a true story about a guy who ended up killing himself because he couldn’t take spending weeks and weeks in a sterile prison listening to the words “United Flight 167 now boarding at Gate 32. TROY -- (R) -- Epic Adventure - Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom put on dresses and act out that classic war epic about the war between Greek city states and Troy. They’ve got the delicious Diane Kruger playing Helen, the original blonde bombshell whose face supposedly launched a thousand ships, but the movie’s main thrust is on Pitt’s golden locks and iron biceps.

Dodgeball - PG13 - Th-Fr, M-W (11:45, 12:15, 2, 2:30, 4:15, 4:45), 7, 7:30, 9:15, 9:45, Sa-Su (11:45, 12:15, 2, 2:30), 4:15, 4:45, 7, 7:30, 9:15, 9:45 Notebook - PG13 - Th-Fr, M-W (1, 4), 7:15, 9:55, Sa-Su (1), 4, 7:15, 9:55 Shrek 2 - PG - Th-Fr, M-W (11:40, 12:20, 2:20, 2:50, 4:40, 5:10), 7:10, 7:40, 9:20, 9:50, Sa-Su (11:40, 12:20, 2:20, 2:50), 4:40, 5:10, 7:10, 7:40, 9:20, 9:50 Stepford Wives - PG13 - Th-Fr, M-W (11:50, 2:10, 4:20), 7:20, 9:40, Sa-Su (11:50, 2:10), 4:20, 7:20, 9:40 Troy - R - Daily 7:45

Now that’s a white chick TWO BROTHERS - (PG) - Family - A story of twin tiger cubs who are discovered by an adventurer (Guy Pearce) and separated. They are eventually reunited as adults, but are pitted against each other in battle. A big hit at the Maui Film Festival in Wailea this year. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned.

DODGEBALL (PG13) - Ben Stiller (Zoolander) is the hilarious head of a big fitness palace that threatens to overtake a small local gym. Vince Vaughn (Swingers) leads a group of social misfits to battle the big evil corporate of narcissism in an epic game of, well, Dodgeball.

GARFIELD - (PG) - Comedy - Movie version of the comic strip that follows the adventures of a sleepy, orange, fat cat that eats a lot of lasagna and cracks wise (of course) to his owner Jon, who I think can’t really hear him because cats don’t really talk so well. Anyway, they go see beautiful (of course) veterinarian Liz Wilson and get a new friend—an utterly mindless yet thoroughly loveable (of course) dog named Odie

FAHRENHEIT 9/11 - (R) - Documentary - This is the one that has the right-wing neoconservative War on Terror types screaming. What, they can dish it out but not take it? Cowards. Anyway, Michael Moore—who in the past has brilliantly skewered Corporate America (Roger and Me) and the NRA (Bowling for Columbine)—shines a light on all the economic and political connections between the Bush and bin Laden clans.

Yippee! It’s Finally Here! Paradice Bluz opens Thursday, at 8 p.m. in Lahaina [CLUB OPENING] Whew. Paradice Bluz is finally opening its doors tonight! And you thought it would never happen. Ha! On their intro night, expect to find a mysterious staircase on a side alley from Front Street that leads into a den of loungey goodness. Check out the brick-walls lined with paintings of famous musicians, like Prince and Carlos Santana and others. Hmm... don’t those cats live here, too? Interesting... George Benson’s grand piano is there, as well as some cushy beanbag chairs, a humidor of the finest cigars, a couple o’ pool tables, an oxygen bar, an elevated VIP area, white leather booths and fat leather couches, some styley merchandise gear and a photographer chick to capture your glee as you bask in the delight of keyboardist’s Brian Cuomo live smooth jazz. On Friday, be sure to catch popular contemporary Hawaiian band Nuffsedd’s release party for Open Doors for Strangers—a fantastic CD that features their hit single “Cherry Bomb.” On Saturday, it’s roots reggae from the Virgin Islands—Bambu Station (pictured)—who have been called “one of the most profound and provocative reggae groups since Bob Marley and the Wailers.” Big names, people! And the best is yet to come, I think. Bambu Station will also be playing Friday, 9 p.m. (21 & over) and Sunday, 6 p.m. (all ages) at Hapa’s Nightclub.

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Sam Campos

The Who? The Who! Tickets on sale Sat. July 3, at the MACC box office

Fourth of July Fireworks Sunday, 8 p.m. in Lahaina Town Yay! It’s the 4th of July! Happy Birthday America! It’s 228 years old! And there’s no better way to celebrate such a festive occasion than by filling the night sky with bright colorful explosions and the lingering smell of gunpowder. You can watch the show anywhere in town, but the best spots are at Baby Beach, the seawall in front of the Hard Rock Café and Kamehameha Iki Park. The fun used to happen at Ka’anapali Beach, but the Association there got tired of picking burnt-out firework remnants from the sand and had the detonations moved to Lahaina Town. The beach in front of Hula Grill will still have bands and stuff for the kids, but you need to clear out by nightfall. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Yes, it’s true! The Who is coming to the A&B Amphitheater, Aug. 4! Before you scoff at the $55$95, remember that you are paying to see rock legends—Quadrophenia? Tommy?? The Kids Are Alright??? And besides, we’re about due for a cancellation this season... Geez, just kidding.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force

North Shore Sextet

Tuesday, 9 p.m. and again at midnight, The Cartoon Network (Channel 35)

Monday, 9 p.m. at SandBar This is Maui’s newest jazz jam band and they rock. Yeah, I said “jazz” and “rock” in the same sentence—you know what I mean, dammit. Anyway, the North Shore Sextet features Mark Johnston on keys, Dustin Hengel on what I think is the world’s sexiest instrument—the muted trumpet, Justin Sadell on gee-tar, John Vangrando on sax, Derek Beaty on stand-up bass and Paul Marchatii or sometimes even Roscoe Wright on drums. You never know if blues-great Bobby Ingram or rap-fabulous Terms None will show up to front this fantastic group of fun and highly flexible musicians. Okay, when I say “flexible,” I mean they can play lots of musical styles—not that they’re, like, doing yoga postures or anything, although you never know. Also, be sure to try one of SandBar’s crazy cucumber martinis garnished with rose petals... Mmm, a metrosexual delight!

May the creators of The Simpsons have mercy on my soul for writing this, but Aqua Teen Hunger Force is the most insanely original and clever cartoon series ever made by human beings. The show follows Master Shake (the obnoxious milkshake), Meatwad (the mumbling meatball who loves to dance) and Frylock (the brilliant, goateed floating French Fries) as they mostly watch TV and swim in their disturbingly sarcastic neighbor Carl’s white trash pool. Two classic episodes air on Tuesday. First up is Bus of the Undead, in which Shake is convinced that the old school bus parked out front—which actually conceals the mysterious Moth Man—is a vampire. The second is The Mooninites, which marks the series’ first appearance of the criminally irritating Atari-like aliens. In that episode, Shake rents out Meatwad’s room to the Mooninites over Frylock’s objections. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ARTS “GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND INTO YOUR BODY”

ARIES: Much of your good fortune is due to the wise planning of your parents or grandparents. Look back to old memories. The full moon emphasizes your career and talents. Your appetite for romance, play and thrills is on the increase. TAURUS: Start the week off on a lucky streak. Foreign or unusual situations could be just what you need. Take short trips to get to know your local surroundings. Take time to enjoy your friendships. The full moon helps you use all your smarts. GEMINI: Real estate prospects are tempting. It’s easy to get caught up in a home improvement frenzy. Find ways to sustain your wealth over the long run. You get your voice back on the fourth. The full moon opens your telepathic potential. CANCER: Even though you feel like the universe has used your soul as a punching bag over the last few weeks, you still have enough spirit and hope to make the best of things. The full moon brings a sense of justice and a cry for peace. LEO: Your energy is slowly but surely returning to you. You have people to see and things to do. Work to uplift those that are in troublesome places. The full moon challenges your sense of pride with the need to serve others. VIRGO: The wind is in your hair as you move with freedom and ease. Serious plans for the future are in the works. Your friends are ready to support your endeavors. The full moon finds you in a playful and romantic space. Spread the love. LIBRA: Being responsible and in authority is an invitation to being ridiculed by your underlings. Hierarchies tend to value rulers over slaves, men over women, and the dominant ethnicity over the minority. The full moon teaches you to treat everyone like family. SCORPIO: Vacations, educations and exotic experiences are inviting this time of year. Your sense of timing is near perfect. Music, law and religion are the flavors of the week. The full moon gives you a chance to get out and hang with the locals. SAGITTARIUS: There’s quite a bit of give and take going on these days. Unfortunately most know about taking, but few know about giving. The full moon reviews your sense of values. Binge eating and career arrogance could cause trouble. CAPRICORN: Be grateful for what you have before going after other people’s stuff. Partnership issues are about to come to a head. The moon is full and in your sign on Thursday and Friday. Your needs are important and they will be heard. AQUARIUS: You’re more than ready to get involved with a community project. Take care of yourself and don’t push too hard. It’s the aftermath of the full moon that’s going to get you to commit yourself to your higher path and purpose. PISCES: Disengage with the mediocre. Discover the fantastic. Create the dream that suits you best. Love like there’s no tomorrow. The full moon has you doing the social butterfly thing. Your health will be restored to you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Lady Di 7/1/61, Aaron Tippen 7/3/58, Cree Summer 7/7/70

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Everything’s big in Texas except beer before noon There comes a point in every party girl’s life where she has to stop drinking and start getting serious. Fortunately, this didn’t happen in San Antonio, town of my first real business trip and the annual convention for the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. I’m here to tell you that while editor-types are quite studious and shy, they tend to let it all out after the free booze and appetizers kick in—much like me! San Antonio is mostly known as home to The Alamo. You know The Alamo—the “cradle of Texas liberty” and the joint where a band of 189 Texans went up against a Mexican army of thousands for a 13-day siege in trying to defend the mission. It’s also the site where 12 years ago, Ozzy Osbourne urinated at the memorial at nine o’clock in the morning dressed in his wife’s evening gown. I wonder if he was also at a convention that week. The coolest thing about San Antonio was the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, which has been around since 1881. It features wall-to-wall horns, pelts and mounts of thousands of dead animals, some of them endangered or extinct, like the Bengal Tiger and cheetah. They also have a two-headed calf, an eight-legged lamb and three shrunken heads made by the Shuar tribe of Jivaro Indians in South America. Believe it or not, I was once considered a peace-loving, Birkenstock-wearing vegetarian in my youth. It was a noble effort, even if it only lasted that one week. But whatever the case, all those scary teeth-baring, bugeyed bear, warthog and rhino heads on the wall sure made me famished to eat as many of those skewered meat things as the caterers could provide. Soon enough I was ready to challenge all those incredibly composed editors, publishers, political columnists and film critics to shots of Jack Daniels while we discussed the inherent implications of journalistic integrity and the First Amendment. Yee-haw, it’s Texas after all! I’d love to tell you about the incidents with the saddle and the spurs and the bottle of Makers Mark but as I whipped out my notebook with glee, one stern Editor-in-Chief from Virginia turned to me and said, “What happens in San Antonio stays in San Antonio.” How original. The last night’s festivities were held at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. As we all filed in to the gallery, a uniformed, badge-wearing, gun-carrying police officer stationed at the door demanded that we immediately “start drinking!” We didn’t know whether to take that as a good or bad sign. The Mexican contemporary art on display was cool. In one area, there was a video of these guys erecting a room out of pink cotton candy. Another section had a dress crocheted from the artist’s own hair. But eventually, the editor-types complained that the visuals distracted from the task at hand—so typical. Then the party moved on to very telling places like Howl at the Moon and Dick’s Last Resort. I escaped with three cartoonists and a publisher in tow, as we hit bar after bar in San Antonio’s own downtown Disneyland called the Riverwalk. At one point, I found myself alone in an Irish bar called Pat O’Brien’s, which had a pianist in the front room singing Barry Manilow’s “Oh, Mandy,” a rock band in the back covering Pearl Jam or something like that and some good ol’ country music wailing away in the restroom. The next morning, after I got in a good zero hours of sleep, ran the 23 miles between Terminal A and Terminal B in Dallas and missed my second flight to San Francisco, I staggered into the airport’s American Bar and ordered a beer. It was 9:55 a.m. “Oh, we can’t serve alcohol until 10,” said the bartender. “And then before noon, you have to have food in front of you, too.” Grumbling, I went to the nearest souvenir shop inundated with “Don’t Mess With Texas” gear and bought a local magazine with writer/musician turned gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman dressed as Her Royal Highness, smoking a cigar with red lipstick, wearing the Star of David and flipping off the readers. That’s Texas. It’s a state of pride and honor, yet still encourages, nay, reveres, the inane and the absurd. Also much like me. MTW
