LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR KNOWS PSYCHOTIC BEHAVIOR I don’t read your paper regularly as I do not have the time. I occasionally glance at it as it is also a reference to music around Maui. Your paper has a section in which “Weird News” is briefly mentioned in a paragraph or two. I’m sure much of is paraphrased or edited. You had one a couple weeks ago that mentions a man having sex with his girlfriend’s rotweiler [sic] dog (News of the Weird, Jun. 3). Are you aware of the difference between something called weird news and something that is sexual perversion pornography? This type of information should only be contained in the type of rags that are published for the sickminded [sic] sector of the public to purchase. It should not be in a paper that is piled up for free for the community to look at and children to see. This small bit of information is about low life, psychotic behavior and was revolting to read by accident. It is abhorring [sic] to think a young teenager may have been reading this… or anyone else who was as offended as I am. You have your right to free speech. If your assinine [sic], immature editor thinks this is “funny, titilating [sic], joke-kine” stuff, you need some serious growing up or get the [EXPLETIVE] out of Maui. This is a [EXPLETIVE] up idea you have to put that kind of smut out to the public. You are an insult to the host culture of Hawai’i. You offend them and you are shamefully disrespectful. You owe them an apology. Hawaiians don’t see your sense of moronic humor. I have been speaking to many pure Hawaiians about this piece in your “paper.” Truthfully, I hope some big Hawaiin [sic] guys decide one day to flatten your [EXPLETIVE] head Mr. [Editor] Anthony Pignataro… you really are a pig. Since you think “beastiality” is so funny, maybe you should get [EXPLETIVE] up your [EXPLETIVE] by a horse. Hawaiians hate your kind of haole ignorance. -Anonymous The Editor responds: Forgive the censured cursing, but Maui Time “is piled up for free for the community to look at and children to see.”
MISSES LENZ As an avid reader of your Pure Volume column, I am disappointed to find your regular punchy, witty and oh-so entertaining writer K. Bradley Lenz out of print!!?? The coverage was a substantial musical journey for those with an appetite. Sorry, but the current replacements just don’t have the same bite. So what happened to our K.B.L??? -Angeli Chitale, via email The Editor responds: K. Bradley Lenz, K. Bradley Lenz… nice kid, about yay high, always wears a shirt? Not ringing a bell, unless you mean the plucky scamp with the gleam in his eye that we use for beer runs. Well, I don’t think we “replaced” him so much as dumped his sniveling, squirming corpse in that abandoned… Hold on, Associate Editor Samantha Campos just shoved a couple issues of the paper in front of me and is now motioning me in that cute way of hers to look at the staff box… Oh, THAT K. Bradley Lenz. Of course. Yeah, he still writes for us. You’ll see his next “punchy, witty and oh-so entertaining” writing whenever we get around to running Pure Volume again... Oh, it’s running this week? Page 27? Cool.
CORRECTION In the June 24 installment of News of the Weird, Chuck Shepherd misinterpreted a BBC News report which implied the punk rock group Bouncing Souls supports President George W. Bush. In fact, the Bouncing Souls website says the band is eager to defeat President Bush. Yay!
Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. Rolling along with Doug Zimmerman Doug Zimmerman is difficult to miss. He looks like a cross between George Clinton and Sun-Ra. Over six feet tall, with no teeth and yellow cheeto-like mini dreads sprouting from his scalp, he is a frequent sight in Kahului. The real thing about Zimmerman is his cart. It is a spectacular craft, bright yellow with multicolored reflectors and the address 1907 inexplicably posted on its side. It is a mammoth thing, well over six feet tall and has wheels. Brown and blue tarps are draped across the top of the wheeled rickshaw. There are chains, padlocks and admonishments like “No trespassing: George Bush, President?” The John Grisham novel The King of Torts is fastened to the cart—a nail bores right thru the pages. On the book cover is a super-glued comb. A King James Version Bible also accessorizes the craft, though without any comb. From a distance, the jalopy looks almost Caribbean. It’s an explosion of color set amidst a drab Kahului backdrop. This is where Zimmerman lives. Inside the cart. It is hollowed out, or rather, built in a way so that a person can fit inside. It’s like a school bus. Or a yellow movable coffin. When he wants to move, Zimmerman just… moves. His cart has wheels, so he laboriously pushes it around in the punishing sun to wherever he wants to go. Inside this ingenious piece of folk art is a television set—there used to be two, apparently, but the other one “got stolen.” There’s also an assortment of music instruments, congos, harmonicas and such—“I am a music lover, man,” he told me—and tubs and tubs of movies. “This is, like, totally me,” Zimmerman says, thrusting the case for the 1990 Rob Reiner film Misery in my face. “I can totally relate to that.” I nod my head, though I have no idea nor any desire to have an idea of what he’s talking about.

We talk more about his cart. “It has a sunroof, see,” he says, inviting me to poke my head inside. Sure enough, there is a dome shaped “sunroof” letting in light. “I’m like ah… spiritual socialist… or uhh.. religious activist,” Zimmerman announces, popping a Peanut Butter M&M. “I am also a great backup singer.”
He likes movies. He has Big Trouble In Little China, Impostor—“awesome,” he shouts—and Under Siege. “They was gon’ blow up Oahu,” he says, indignant at the idea. He likes Steven Siegel a lot. And The Rock, too. Scorpion King is among is favorites. “Can you smell what The Rock is cookin?” he demands. On the walls of his home, inside and out, is a disconnected torrent of graffiti: “FBI is on the take terrorism Mo-DEEP DNAGERMWARFARE Civil Rights Law Slut JesusChrist What God POLITICS&RELIGIOUS Hi Bitch Stole My Wedding Ring I WILL HANG THIS STATE PRAISE GOD MENTAL ILLNESS.” Doug Zimmerman says he’s from Atlanta. He came to Maui five years ago. “Because… uh, man, you aint gon’ believe dis,” he says. “See they be havin thesse like, bikini contests and I liked’ed they way they be talking, see. The girls. Compared to other girls like, back in the states. “I jus got 160 dollars,” he says, as if just realizing it. Manuel Moniz, Jr. Representing Paia, Moniz sat on a 16-member state advisory council during the big 2001 reapportionment. Held every 10 years after the national census, reapportionment draws new state and federal congressional district lines to take advantage of population changes. While Moniz didn’t actually have a chance to mark up any map, his appointment to the council reflected his political connections.

LOCALNEWS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30 A lot of people want to close old Makena Rd. as it runs across the La Perouse lava fields. Mayor Alan Arakawa wants it shut down. So do local activists. Even some kayak tour operators who used to haul their plastic boats down there want it. Now, finally, the AhihiKinau Natural Area Reserve wants it, and voted unanimously on Monday to shut down public access into the beautiful yet delicate area. Of course, the ever-cautious state Department of Land and Natural Resources—which always seems to value the interests of commercial tour operators more than locals advocating historical preservation—still wants to maintain considerable access, and intends to station rangers in the area in August. And he still wants to allow fishermen and native gatherers in, which is all laudable, but begs the question—why just them and not everyone? Access is access—you let in fishermen, you have to let in snorkelers, kayakers, hikers and pretty much everyone else who wants in. Which ends up crowding the place. Hence the calls to “shut it down.”
THURSDAY, JULY 1 Of course, not all closures are good closures. In fact, some signal that America just completed another step on its journey to total national insanity. I’m speaking of today’s official conversion of our quaint Lahaina and Kahului Harbors into restricted security areas. Basically, they’re the same harbors we’ve known all along, with marginal restroom facilities and nearly non-existent parking, but now they have shiny new security fences and gates designed specifically to keep surfers out of the water. Because, as we all know, one of Al Qaida’s very favorite tactics is the use of socalled Suicide Surfers—guys who paddle

Seriously, Carlos the Jackal used to stay up all night trying to shape a longboard entirely out of C4… Hurray! Maui County public bus service—such as it is—didn’t end last night! In fact, it got free. For a month. Then Roberts Hawaii— which took over for Akina Aloha Tours after that company demanded an extra $1 million to keep the busses running—will probably jack up fares. But hey—this is called “progress.”
FRIDAY, JULY 2 The Maui News has a small item today on a former Maui police officer who’s been charged with two counts of third-degree assault for alleging slapping two men in the Koho Grill & Bar restroom last September. According to the Maui News story, at the time of the incident Ryan Aikala was an off-duty Maui PD officer “drinking” with other off-duty cops at Koho at 10 a.m. Maui County Drug Court enrollees Verlin Frame and Rory Mau were then separately called into the restroom, at which time Aikala slapped them. While Frame and Mau remain in Drug Court, Aikala is no longer with the Maui PD… Major General Robert Lee, the state adjutant general, today commenced the largest alert in the history of the Hawaii Army National Guard. Approximately 2,900 troops of the 29th Separate Infantry Brigade—stationed all over the state—will be mobilized and sent to either Iraq or Afghanistan. According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the 29th hasn’t seen action since its May, 1968 deployment to South Vietnam. The mobilization includes infantry, artillery, support, engineering and intelligence units. One of those units is the famed 100th Battalion of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, the all-Japanese-American combat team that won so many decorations during World War II. MONDAY, JULY 5 Barely 12 hours after Maui lost contact with the outside world, I opened today’s copy of The Maui News to find a tiny news blurb blaming a stuck crossing button on the Launiupoko traffic light for a Saturday traffic jam that backed up Lahaina-bound cars clear to Ma’alaea. You’d think that even if we didn’t get complex stuff like fiber optic cables, we’d still be able to figure out relatively ancient equipment like traffic signals. But hey—even I’m wrong from time to time.
TUESDAY, JULY 6 from retiring, it sure is a good thing that Iraqi occupation is over.
SATURDAY, JULY 3 Moonwalker Buzz Aldrin’s back in the news. Normally the second guy to walk on the moon keeps a pretty low profile, occasionally popping up in the Newport Beach, California society pages for one gala or another. But now he’s in our fair archipelago, having sailed over to Honolulu aboard the new Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of Aloha. In a great Honolulu Advertiser story today, reporter Will Hoover writes, among other things, how Aldrin’s wife refused to let the 74-year old exastronaut eat bacon and eggs.
SUNDAY, JULY 4 On this day when Americans all over the world celebrated national independence and fortitude, Maui took a nice four-hour step back to, oh, the middle of the 19th Century.

Guess what today is? Only the bestest day of the year, if your name happens to be George Walker Bush. That’s right, today’s Dubya’s birthday! Our Fearless Leader is now 58 years old, which you have to admit is pretty old for him. Considering the Leader of the Free World is still learning how to eat a Rold Gold without choking himself into a coma, getting all the way to 58 has got to be some kind of victory over the law of averages. Anyway, the leftist group Billionaires for Bush decided to hold a big celebration for our president under the old Lahaina Banyan Tree. You’ve seen the Billionaires—they’re the clever rascals who run around in top hats and tails saying that they love Bush because he’s done so much for them. “Hawaii’s bottom 60 percent of earners will receive an average tax cut of only $379 in 2003,” read the group’s latest press release, “while the top one percent of earners will receive an average tax cut of $53,174 in 2003.” Who wouldn’t like a president who stands for that? That’s because a small brush fire in Kihei damaged a fiber-optic telephone line, obliterating phone service for pretty much everyone. Cell phones, 911 emergency service, Kahului Airport flight operations and the all-important internet dating scene were all suddenly, painfully non-existent. As is usually the case when these things happen, pandemonium ensued. People, perhaps out of fear or just plain loneliness, began talking to their neighbors. Those with emergencies, unable to call for help, were forced to walk to fire stations. Thank God the madness only lasted four hours.

Case o’ Snails Now appearing at the Bailey House tion. He did so in memory of his relative, Frances Baldwin Cameron. That’s why the opening was held July 3, which would have been Cameron’s 101st birthday. Now these aren’t your average variety garden snails that grow to be a few inches long and creep along your driveway after it rains. No, these snails are tiny. The collection sits in a glass paneled, wooden display case in a room containing Edward Bailey’s paintings of the Iao Valley, Kahului Harbor, and other Maui locales in all their late 19th Century splendor. They’re arranged in six shallow boxes. Each box contains 30 discs, and each of those contains around a half dozen shells. Some of the discs contain shells so small they’re further contained within tiny, inch-long glass tubes. One tube looked to hold over a dozen dark shells. The boxes have peeling labels marked “Hawaiian Land Snails.” Some appear in a box labeled “Lamenella Species.” Others carry the label “Achatinella”—which is the name of a genus found on Oahu. The largest shell was no bigger than my thumbnail. All of them are very colorful. Many
Since most of you headed up to Makawao for the parade and rodeo this weekend, you probably missed the big opening at the old Bailey House in Wailuku. We were there, and we can now report that the Bailey House is Maui’s foremost depository for Hawaiian Land Snails. July 3 saw the grand opening of a collection holding 1,144 snail shells, all found, categorized and labeled by David Dwight Baldwin from 1873 until his 1912 death. Some are marine snails, but most of the specimens once lived on the land. A little over 70 percent of the shells are from snail species now extinct. “When we got the gift, we made the commitment to hold it together,” said Maui Historical Society executive director Roslyn Lightfoot. “It would dissipate the collection to separate it. We have the original boxes that were made for the collection. And we have the typed, in some cases handwritten, name of the specimens and where they found it.” Bruce Baldwin Roeding, who lives in Fremont, California, donated the collec-
are striped like electronic resistors, with fat and thin bands of yellow, brown and beige. Some fade from green to yellow. Some are white with just a thin brown band near the base. Some are dark with jagged white stripes. “Collecting land snails was a big deal in the 1800s,” said Bailey House trustee Linda Decker said during the July 3 opening reception. “Naturalists were cataloging all sorts of
things. It’s very important for the museum to have this. It’s real neat that this has come to us—that they felt that we were the appropriate caretakers. I guess we’re the attic of last resort.” Later, Decker told me she’s also working on a biography of Bailey, the former owner of the house that now cares for the snail shells, which should be challenging considering the only thing previously written about him was his 1903 obituary. “We have some weird and wonderful things as any historical society,” said Decker. “We just got a turtle shell about this big…” Decker told me she began her work at the Bailey House in the 1980s. “I answered an ad in the paper asking for people to help house the collection,” she said. “Twenty some odd of us who responded. We did things like obtaining records, checking the condition of every item, arguing about whether a rock was gray, green or green-gray. That was a lot of fun.” As she talked, locals and tourists filed past the snail case. “Oh, look at that green and white,” said one young woman who spoke of finding snails on local hikes to her friend. “They’re gorgeous.” MTW

RIDING Skateboard legend Stacy Peralta’s new documentary about the history of big wave surfing not only puts to bed any doubts about the sustainability of his stellar filmmaking career after the phenomenal Dogtown And Z-Boys, but also raises the stakes on surfing movies as a genre. Riding Giants is already being christened within the inner circles of pro surfers as the ultimate surfing movie to ever come along, and promises civilian audiences an up close and personal tour of the legends who have reinvented the mysterious sport of big wave surfing over the past 60 years. From its 1,000-year-old Polynesian origins, Riding Giants unearths Greg Noll’s first day at Waimea in 1957 to his epic day at Makaha in 1969 that inspired surfers like Jeff Clark to brave the treacherous but perfect 20-foot breaks at Maverick’s just above California’s Half Moon Bay. Laird Hamilton and his Maui crew of tow-in surfing pros (Dave Kalama, Darrick Doerner, Brett Lickle, Rush Randle, Mark Angulo, Mike Waltze, Buzzy Kerbox, and Pete Cabrihna) bring on the film’s tremendous giant wave climax at Peahi (“Jaws”) with heart-stopping surfing that you must see on a big screen. But beyond the film’s engaging use of rare archival footage, photos and interviews with surfing legends lies a piercing sociological examination of freedom in its rawest form, and at its most elemental cost. An informal feature of Peralta’s passionate regard for his subject is an unimposing timely social context that springs from its historical relevancy. Riding Giants is a milestone documentary because it transcends things about life, nature, culture, expression, and humanity that are intrinsic to us all. Stacy Peralta is tuned into a rhythm and tempo that is contagious for the joy and admiration that he generously shares in his work. It’s the same spirit that was apparent in his early days as a Dogtown skateboarder, and it’s even more evident in his equally skilled efforts as a documentarian. I recently talked with Stacy Peralta (see my previous interview with him in “Beyond Cool,” Jun. 20, 2002).
GIANTS Talking with director Stacy Peralta Maui Time: I know Laird Hamilton executive produced Riding Giants, and I’m curious what his role in the film was aside from the surfing. Peralta: Laird is an interesting surfer for many reasons, but one of the reasons is that he’s trying to take an active role in helping shape the perception of what surfing is. The reason that he and I got together is that I had an idea to do a documentary film on big wave surfing, and obviously if I was going to do it, I wasn’t going to do it without his participation—it just couldn’t happen. I felt the same the same way about Greg Noll. But when I met Laird and we sat down to talk, he said he was already in the process of already trying to get a film off the ground that was more of a docudrama about big wave surfing. So I presented him with my idea and I said, “What do you think about doing something that’s more of an historical look at the whole field of Greg Noll all the way up to you?” And he said, “I like that idea.” From that point forward he became very effective in using his cache in helping to get the film financed, and in getting access to people like Pat Curran and George Downing and some of

the real heavyweight historical surfers who don’t answer the phones for many people. Laird wanted to see this happen, and was damned determined to put his resources down to make it happen. And he didn’t ask for creative control—he knew that that would be dangerous. He just simply said, “Look, if I have ideas, I want to share ‘em with you, but it’s up to you whether you use them or not.” He was really fair that way.
I think it’s interesting towards the end of the film when he surfs that really enormous wave, and then you hear him talking about it, and you really understand the fear that he lives with and how seriously he takes each and every wave. Well, a lot of people have asked me, “Are these guys just thrill seekers?” These guys do this for a number of reasons, but one of the reasons is that they’re discovering who they are. These waves allow these guys to discover what they’re made of, and they’re getting something I guess people discover in the heat of battle, or things of that nature. Laird takes what he does so seriously. His

entire life is dedicated to doing what he does. There are a lot of big wave surfers in this world, but there’s nobody like Laird. He is devoted for the maybe six days a year that he gets to ride waves like this. He spends the other 359 days preparing for it. That means riding his bike for four hours up in the hills in Malibu in the summer time, and then going out on his paddle board and paddling that for three hours, and then dragging a log or a stump down the beach. What’s remarkable is that he keeps this up year after year because he knows that if he’s going to do this, and he’s going to do it well, that this is what it requires. Laird is waiting for the biggest swell of the century, because when that wave arrives it’s only gonna be one day and it’s only gonna be momentary. And he wants to make sure that it’s him out there riding that wave and that he’s ready. A lot of the guys told me, “We ride the waves, but Laird really surfs the waves.” And when you really view the footage, you see that this guy’s putting himself at all times in the most critical parts of the wave. A lot of the other guys, as amazing as they are, take a straighter approach. Laird is in a league of his own, and that’s not even taking into account the fact that he’s helping to invent new forms of surfing.
He must get injured once in awhile. You talk to him about that. I think he said he’s injured every part of his body—not just from surfing—but from living the active life that he lives. He spends the winter in Maui and he spends the summers in Malibu. He has a group of guys that he works out with, and they all say that he rides a bike at an Olympic level.
were not surfers.
There’s an incredible amount of rare footage in the film of surfers like Greg Noll back when big wave surfing was just beginning, how did you find that stuff? It’s just part of being a documentarian. You have to hunt, you have to be an investigator and you have to turn over every stone. One phone call leads to another phone call, one guy you meet over a beer says, “Oh you know who I think has something, that guy has something.” But also, because I am a surfer and I’ve surfed all my life, I did know that Greg Noll had a stash of footage. I know a guy in Santa Monica named Chris Rohloff, and his father was a contemporary of Bruce Brown named Grant Rohloff—who’s no longer alive—and I knew that they had stuff that had never even been transferred to video, and that no one had ever even seen. So I started off knowing where a couple of the chests were, and then it was like, okay, now how do I get the really rare stuff, like the stuff no one’s ever seen of Makaha, and the photographs of Makaha. And that led me to Herbie Fletcher, who led me to Herbie Fletcher’s father-in-law Walter Hoffman, who was one of the first mainland surfers to travel over there, and he just happened to have this wildly amazing collection of photographs and 16mm footage. Then he told me about a guy named Tom Keck who had some stuff, and then someone told me about a guy named John Elwell.
What’s the biggest wave that you’ve ever surfed?
“When you get back on the beach, it changes who you are.” You know Mickey Munoz, who’s in the film, is an old time surfer and he’s like 5’ 3”—he’s a pretty little guy—he was out there the first day at Waimea and he was still in high school at the time. He said that when he went back to school in Santa Monica the next season, he was the tallest guy in school. And I believe him. Surfing waves under six or 10 feet has a certain recreational quality to it, but when you’re surfing waves over 20 feet it’s not recreation. And sometimes these guys say it’s not even that much fun. It requires every bit of your presence, every bit of your concentration, and there’s a certain intoxication to that type of commitment. These are the adventurers. These are the guys that are going to the places that all of us kind of just go, “well, sounds interesting, I’d like to do it— probably won’t.”
Well, that’s the brilliant thing about your film—that audiences can go and experience some part of that thrill. I don’t want to put down other filmmakers, but there have been so many below average Hollywood surf films and there’s been so much surf pornography-type videos, you know wave after wave. But I really wanted to make something that had context to it so that nonsurfers and surfers could look at and go, you know what?—I get it now. I get why these people are willing to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of this, that they aren’t necessarily “surf bums,” that there’s a purpose behind this and that there’s an art form behind this. There was a certain mission statement being a surfer all my life being frowned upon—“Well why would you waste your time doing that?”
Ten feet, and that’s probably gonna remain.
You premiered Riding Giants at the Sundance Film Festival as you had previously done with Dogtown. Did you plan that ahead of time? You know what’s weird is that I was at Laird’s house in Maui having dinner with he and Dave Kalama, Darrick Doerner, and our other executive producer Frank Marty in January of 2003. I said to them, “Guys, as we’re sitting around this table and we have just made the commitment to make this film tonight, right now the Sundance Film Festival is opening up. I want to get this film on track and start shooting as soon as possible because this time next year I want to premiere this film at the Sundance Film Festival.” I knew it was a tall order, and what’s remarkable is that we bloody made it—not only made it, but we were the first documentary film in Sundance history to be chosen to be the opening night film. Typically documentaries are put in the 200-seat theaters, and they put us in the 1,200-seat theater and we had two screenings on the first night, and there were standing ovations when I brought the guys up on stage afterwards. And 99 percent of the people in the audience
Where do you see tow-in surfing taking surfing? What size boards do you surf on? I have a 6’7,” I have a 7’6,” and I have a 9’ board, and I find myself these days mostly surfing on my 7’6” and my 9’ board. The other one just takes too much juice.
What do you think it is about the psychology of big wave surfing that draws these guys in to this seemingly impossible reality? With these guys in particular, I think it’s a part of their personality. Greg Noll, for example, is a big appetite guy and he has a confrontational side of himself. He likes challenges and that’s what he lives for. When we talked to Ricky Grigg, who’s an oceanographer and big wave surfer in Waikiki, he said, “We really wanted to discover what we were made of, and when you’re out there on waves like that you learn quickly if you’ve got it or not. And when you’ve got it, you get to explore what it is that you have.” And he said,

I guess where it’s gonna go is these guys are going to be prepared to ride this century’s equivalent of 1969. These guys are going to be prepared, if the day should arrive, when there’s a 100foot swell and they’re closing down the beaches and houses are washing up on shore.
What will be your next film? I ended up writing the fictional screenplay for Dogtown, which is now in production, so I’ve established myself as a writer as well. Now Sony wants me to do a coming-of-age ‘50s film based on Greg Noll and some of those guys, and we’re in negotiations to do a fictional take on what their lives were like back then, basically on the cusp of surfing culture. I don’t want to stop doing documentaries because I like that format, but I don’t want to stick to sports documentaries. To be honest, with the way the world’s going right now I want to make a documentary on democracy. MTW

Peter Merriman Executive Chef, Hula Grill What I like most about working in Hawaii are the people we are serving. They are on vacation and this is the best week of the year for them. You only see happy people and that’s what makes you happy, too. Twenty years ago I came to Hawaii only for a year, but stayed. I opened my first restaurant 16 years ago, and another one just recently. Of course, there’s my work at Hula Grill. But now, after 25 years of being a professional chef, my job is not actually cooking but designing the menu, creating new recipes and the restaurant conception. I believe that the menu needs to be read as a book, written by one person, because it is a work of passion. The ideas for my dishes come mostly from my professional instinct— finding a balance between what I feel like eating and what sells the best. For my family and myself I like to cook very simple, high-quality food using mostly fresh, organic products: A giant salad with fresh fish, for example. Dreaming about a football career, I didn’t go to culinary school but graduated with a political science degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where I could play my favorite sport. But I started to cook in restaurants at a very young age. I practiced my cooking and managerial skills in the World Trade Center in New York. Then I did cooking in Vermont, then Frankfurt, Germany. I’ve never thought about becoming a head chef. I am just having fun with line cooking. Professionalism is very important, as are deep studies in the craft—authentic or home cooking—and scientific knowledge about cooking and food. It’s become much harder to have a restaurant business, especially on Maui. Food prices go up, but the customer never wants to pay more. Also it’s much easier to find support for any authentic food business on the mainland, in cities like New York, for example. But it’s always great that there are no weekends on Maui. Every day is busy, whereas in most places on the mainland, you get slow during the week. MTW

Come hither The scene is one of the first clues that all is not pure in Arthur’s mission to rescue a Roman nobleman from the approaching Saxon army. The Woads are a fierce tribe of tattooed, blue-painted fighters whose abridged leather armor speaks of brazenness and determination beyond the mettle Arthur’s steely mercenaries.
Arthur and his knights have been denied their promised freedom and citizenship in Rome until they rescue Roman nobleman Marius Honorius (Ken Scott—I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead) from his home on the north side of Hadrian’s Wall, which separates the vast British countryside. But when they arrive at Marius’ palatial estate, they discover his abusive treatment of the local peasants that he maintains as serfs. It’s here that Arthur begins to doubt his rose-colored understanding of Rome’s “civilized” empire. Clive Owen’s Arthur is a deeply conflicted man who believes in a mythological Rome filled with civility and compassion. He grieves over the injustice he witnesses around him, and single-handedly professes to fight the attacking Saxon army in the film’s final battle, although the corrupt Roman occupiers are by now just as liable. King Arthur stands as a martyr to the individual freedom that he imagines himself to possess. Yet Arthur is never a “free” man in the story because his colorable enemies and his corrupt allies define him and his goals. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor) has once again backed a historical caricature movie that never achieves epic status because every personality is a stereotype lacking in sufficient context to match the imagined scope of the story. It’s a trap Spider-Man 2 defeats by moving in the opposite direction. That’s not to say that Jerry Bruckheimer could create cartoon-inspired movies any less flawed than his signature bombastic duds. MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX
Blue Horizon 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Filmmaker Jack McCoy documents the unique and contrasting lifestyles of two of the world’s best surfers: world champion pro Andy Irons and soul surfer Dave “Rasta” Rastovich. McCoy’s most ambitious project to date, Blue Horizon takes viewers to exotic locations and exciting new surf territories around the world. Tickets: $10 advance, $12 day of show.
MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Wednesday, July 14 Valentin 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Heartfelt and artfully shot, as well as critically acclaimed and often compared to the wonderful Cinema Paradiso and Kolya, this coming-of-age story told through the eyes of a precocious 10year old boy who lives with his grandmother in turbulent 1969 pays homage to the heroism of creating your own world when the one that you're really living in often breaks your heart. Highly praised as "Warm and Intriguing" by Roger Ebert and as having "Charm to Spare" by the Hollywood Reporter. This is a wonderful little film you will be glad you saw. Guaranteed. In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated PG-13. 84 min.
New This Week ANCHORMAN - (PG) - Comedy - The pretty much always funny Will Ferrell plays Rob Burgandy, a know-nothing know-it-all TV news anchorman in San Diego who’s all comfy in his burgundy blazer and full-on 1970s moustache until a new, intelligent reporter—played by the lovely and talented Christina Applegate (Kelly Bundy, to you Married with Children fans)— threatens to take his job. RIDING GIANTS - (PG13) - Documentary - The complete breakdown on the hows, whys and allimportant whos of big wave surfing—guys like Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton who’ve made names for themselves towing behind jet skis into monster waves at places like Mavericks in California and our own Peahi (aka Jaws). Helmed by Stacy Peralta of Dogtown and Z-Boys fame, the film has all the makings of a surf classic. KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that
Nice hat used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. With Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. See Film Critique.
Now Showing AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - (PG) Action/Adventure - This Jules Verne classic stars Jackie Chan—Jackie Chan!—as Passepartout, the Chinese thief and Steve Coogan as British adventurer Phileas Fogg. Considering that Chan does a lot of his trademark kicking and jumping and kicking while in the act of jumping, we’re guessing the studio strayed a bit from Verne’s original storyline. DODGEBALL (PG13) - Ben Stiller (Zoolander) is the hilarious head of a big fitness palace that threatens to overtake a small local gym. Vince Vaughn (Swingers) leads a group of social misfits to battle the big evil corporate of narcissism in an epic game of, well, Dodgeball. FAHRENHEIT 9/11 - (R) - Documentary - This is the one that has the right-wing neoconservative War on Terror types screaming. What, they can dish it out but not take it? Cowards. Anyway, Michael Moore—who in the past has brilliantly skewered Corporate America (Roger and Me) and the NRA (Bowling for Columbine)— shines a light on all the economic and political connections between the Bush and bin Laden clans. GARFIELD - (PG) - Comedy - Movie version of the comic strip that follows the adventures of a sleepy, orange, fat cat that eats a lot of lasagna and cracks wise (of course) to his owner Jon, who I think can’t really hear him because cats don’t really talk so well. Anyway, they go see beautiful (of course) veterinarian Liz Wilson and get a new friend—an utterly mindless yet thoroughly loveable (of course) dog named Odie HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Third in the Harry Potter dynasty of children’s books, this storyline evolves around Harry’s inability to tame the beast within him, as he goes on the run, not realizing that he is also being chased by a renegade wizard played by sexy master villain Gary Oldman (hello? Bram Stoker’s Dracula?). THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The
princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! SLEEPOVER - (PG) - Comedy - Oh My God, these four teenage girls are, like, so happy to be out of the eighth grade that they have a slumber party that is so cool but then it gets even better, you see, when they start competing against their school’s popular girls in an all-night scavenger hunt, forcing them to borrow Julie’s dad’s car and sneak into these clubs and even kiss their first boys, all without Julie’s mom finding out. SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure - Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). THE STEPFORD WIVES - (PG13) - Comedy - A remake of the 1975 suspense classic about a creepy upper-class suburb—actually, aren’t all suburbs kinda creepy?—where all the wives are seemingly “perfect,” but are actually just the submissive robots their creepy husbands have replaced their real wives with. All-star cast features Nicole Kidman, Mathew Broderick, Faith Hill, Christopher Walken and Bette Midler. THE TERMINAL - (PG13) - Drama - Steven Spielberg directs Tom Hanks as some Eastern European guy who gets stranded in an airport terminal because his country ceases to exist. It’s a light-hearted film, which is odd considering it’s based on a true story about a guy who ended up killing himself because he couldn’t take spending weeks and weeks in a sterile prison listening to the words “United Flight 167 now boarding at Gate 32. TWO BROTHERS - (PG) - Family - A story of twin tiger cubs who are discovered by an adventurer (Guy Pearce) and separated. They are eventually reunited as adults, but are pitted against each other in battle. A big hit at the Maui Film Festival in Wailea this year. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned.

MTW up with the popular Ma’alaea Grill. The effect Tahiti Fete on Maui coming up the weekend of Aug. 13-15. Performing at venues around the island including Whaler’s Village, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Shops at Wailea, cruise ships and a slew of resorts, the talented group showcases dances from the many cultures that make Hawaii the melting pot of the Pacific. The group presents cultural dances and music from Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand, Korea, Philippines, Spain, as well as ancient and modern Hawaii. The group has been under the direction of KM Polynesian Productions’ Keoni Manuel for the last three years. Born and raised on Oahu, Manual studied international dance for more than two decades. He’s toured the Philippines, Korea and Japan with his own troupe and spent eight years as an entertainer on the inter-island cruise ship Independence. It was then that Manuel honed his talents in Hawaiian music and Polynesian dance. Back on dry land, he played the ukulele and sang for various “cha-lang-a-lang” groups in classic Hawaiian backyard style. Not long after, he was producing fullblown Polynesian dinner shows for conventions and hotels. After studying directing and choreography, he began Te Tiare Patitifa in 2001. The troupe employs professional dancers and musicians and includes a Hulu Halau and Polynesian studio in Wailuku. And he’s seriously considering taking his show on the road, so to speak, to Vegas. Manuel is proud of his troupe, and not merely because they repeatedly draw large audiences at their various performances. “I like to take traditional dances and incorporate modern stylings,” he said. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Sam Campos
Six Degrees Night
‘Guns and Hoses’
Friday, 9:45 p.m. at Casanova
Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wailea Marriott Hotel Resort
[MUSIC] DJ El Gato is back from Asia and so Six Degrees Night is back on at Casanova. In celebration of Bebel Gilberto’s amazing new follow up album, there will be CD giveaways, a multimedia extravaganza and a hot night of booty shakin’. DJ El Gato plays his joyful, eclectic blend of the best dance grooves of South America and Africa while DJ Kalanaka opens the fiesta with an international flavor of deep tribal grooves from around the globe. Adding an organic element to keep everybody on their toes is the awesome conguero, Tato, blasting out live Latin percussion. Hai Dai never fails to provide titillating eye candy, yoking the audio and the visual stimuli. For more visual stimulation, multitalented Ishiah will dance on stage to show us on how it is done. Unique music, live congas, sexy dancers, beautiful people and exhilarating visuals at Casanova— what more could you want on a Friday night on Maui? [JOE GATTO]
THURSDAY
[FUNDRAISER] It’s a known fact: Firemen are hot. Get it? Fire? HOT?! Um, yeah, okay so anyway, there’s this cool—ha ha—fundraiser going on for one of Maui’s finest firefighters and life-savers, Captain Charlie Iwata, who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and is now battling to save his own life. In order to raise the money required to undergo his costly experimental procedures, Iwata’s ohana has organized a fashion show, where Maui’s police officers and firefighters—i.e. the hottest men in blue and red—will model clothing from Local Motion, Maui Style, Honu and White House/Black Market. Alaka’i Paleka will emcee and there’ll also be a three-course lunch, as well as a live and silent auction. Tickets are only $50 and “although firefighters and police have a reputation of taking care of each other, one gets the sense that Charlie is someone special that everyone is going the extra mile to help out.” Check out www.mauifire.com or 242-4400 for more info.
‘Hair’ Friday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Sunday, 5 p.m.; through Aug. 1, at Iao Theater [MUSICAL] Yeah, hippies are great. Especially those cute red-haired girls with the love beads and the afros and the fringed suede vests but I digress. Ahem—the Broadway production of Hair first opened in 1968 as “America’s First Tribal Love Rock Musical” with catchy tunes like “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” and “Hair” and the notion of “make love not war” was exemplified, live and in technicolor. But the Maui OnStage version of this ‘60s love fest actually begins at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku on Friday, 4:30 p.m. with a Gala Party. Be sure to look as groovy as possible, as there is a costume contest during the show’s intermission on opening night! Tickets are $20 adults and $18 seniors in advance or a couple bucks more at the door. For information, call the MOS box office line at 242-6969. Oh, and P.S. Hair is “not suitable for all audiences, as it contains strong language, brief nudity and adult themes.” Groovy.

Getting Away From It All
Beer Love
Saturday, 7 p.m., SeventhDay Adventist Church in Kahului
Saturday, 7 p.m. at Kahului Ale House
[LECTURE] Every steak you toss on the barbecue, chunk of ground beef you shape into a hamburger patty and chicken leg seasoned with 11 herbs and spices that you pull out from the Colonel’s bucket is a theft from this planet’s natural resources. Eating dead animals requires massive factory farms and slaughterhouses, which in turn require rainforests for grazing, fossil fuels for burning and rivers for polluting. In this latest Vegetarian Society lecture, Linda Day of the University of Hawaii’s Office of Sustainability will give a—and I’m quoting the press release directly here—“fact-filled but fun exploration of how your diet can reduce the enormous threat we pose to our lifesupporting environment.” Sounds pretty heavy to be “fun.” Anyway, admission and refreshments are free. The church is located at 261 S. Puunene Ave. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
[FOOD/DRINK] There is a famous rock star I know who demands that hops and barley be sprinkled on his pillow at all the five-star hotels he stays. I can’t blame him, really. Whoever dreamt up this recipe for heady success deserves the Nobel Peace Prize! Well, actually Arnd Leike did get one in 2002 for demonstrating that beer froth obeys the mathematical Law of Exponential Decay but that’s not exactly what I had in mind. Anyway, Chad Metcalfe is hosting a Gordan Biersch Beer Lovers Dinner at his Ale House in Kahului, featuring a five-course dinner and tapping a 100-liter wooden keg of unfiltered Marzen. Some menu items include the Biersch Fritter-Blonde Ale Battered Shrimp and Drunken PigPilsner Marinated Pork Chop. But I’m holding out for the Blueberry Croissant Pudding with Gordan Biersch Malt Cream. Mmm…
DAY
Sunday, Wailua Iki Trail on the Ke’anae Peninsula [SPORTS & LEISURE] Just about everybody likes a good hike. What’s not to like? You get exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery… yeah, you’d have to be some kind of commie pinko fascist know-nothing to hate hiking. And the only thing better than a hike is an all-day, seven-mile hike along the Wailua Iki Trail through the Ke’anae Valley. Keep in mind that this hike—led and sponsored by the Maui Chapter of the Sierra Club—is limited to 20 people, so register quick by calling 573-4147. Oh, the hike also requires a waiver from the East Maui Irrigation. You can reach them during regular business hours at 579-9516. Sounds like a hassle, but it’s worth it. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

“BEBEL GILBERTO” This is the long awaited follow up to Bebel Gilberto’s marvelous 2000 debut, Tanto Tempo. It is apparent here once again that Gilberto is a powerful voice and the messiah of bossa nova, bringing the sweet Brazilian genre to international acclaim. Her latest album shows how she has matured as a singer and a songwriter. She wrote nine of the 12 songs, with Carlinhos Brown of Tribalistas taking credit for one, and even Tom Jobim’s son contributing a tune. There is a nice mixture of Portuguese and English; her voice sounds more innocent in English and sultrier in her native tongue. On Bebel Gilberto there is less of the digital atmosphere of Tanto Tempo, which has been replaced with orchestral string sections, acoustic guitar, woodwinds and Brazilian percussion. My favorite song is “Jabuticaba,” a sweet love song dedicating her favorite fruit to a lucky lover. Sophisticated arrangements, heartfelt lyrics, sunny bossa nova and a cool downtempo vibe characterize Bebel Gilberto and she proves again that she is an essential international artist. —Six Degrees Records [JOE GATTO]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “JACKIE BROWN” I think we all know that Quentin Tarantino can make a mean soundtrack (Pulp Fiction, e.g.), or get the people who can to take care of it (Rza on Kill Bill). I chose this soundtrack thinking that it had one or two other songs from the movie on than it did. Even with the loss of Shugie Otis, a forgotten bluesy R&B fellow responsible for “Rainbows & Waterfalls,” the CD still holds strong with the Delfonics and other R&B singers of the ‘70s. As Tarantino pays homage to ‘70s blacksploitation and its queen, Pam Grier, Jackie Brown carries the superfly groove needed to backup this most magnificent mama. BooYeah! —’97 Warner Records [K. BRADLEY LENZ]

“ROCKERS” To all the bruddahs and sistahs of Maui that talk about the da true roots reggae, this is it. It is not The Harder They Come. Nor is it the trendy dancehall hit you love but only half-heartedly shake your round self to; “Such a pity” is right. Oh and it’s definitely NOT that Hawaiian syncretism of reggae rhythms and “lady-lovin” pop lyrics that flood these Babylonian airwaves. This album and movie are a time capsule that lets you taste what da roots music was back when they hadn’t touched down anywhere but the Caribbean. We want this here, Maui—I hear your hearts calling for it. Let this be a reason to spend some loot, or if you don’t have any, maybe borrow from your ganja fund—or if that’s out of the question, maybe from the six gallons of gas you’d save by not attempting to drive “blind.” —’80 Universal Records [K. ARTS “GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND INTO YOUR BODY”
ARIES: Although there’s a few limits on the home front, you’re able to get your point across with intelligence and grace. Your level of enthusiasm and lust for life is contagious. Your personal touches will find a socially acceptable venue. TAURUS: Staying home and taking care of chores isn’t the worst fate in the world. Not binging on junk food is the big challenge. The moon will be in Taurus over the weekend. It’s a good time for getting together and affirming your relationships. GEMINI: Walk in the beauty of a slow-moving love. You’re in the process of getting your groove back. Avoid monopolizing conversations. Monday through Wednesday features the moon in Gemini. What do you want to do with your creations? CANCER: Let the good times roll, or at least trickle down a bit. Issues involving maturity rear their ugly heads. Respect your own limitations while you respect the limits of others. Your imagination flourishes. Think up a sane financial policy. LEO: You’re coming up with some of your best ideas. Day is breaking and yet, you still have dragons to slay. Embracing your shadow side will help. Realize your good fortune. Your social life improves while your finances expand. Potlucks make more sense than costly, catered cuisine. VIRGO: Big business deals are often made at parties. Keep your business cards handy while you’re out having fun. Most of my success stories involve going in one direction and then due to a unique set of circumstances, a heartfelt goal becomes realized. LIBRA: Most things seem to involve you in the public eye these days. Travel, education and getting out of your normal routine will help you to balance your heavy load. Mixing work with play can’t be helped, so why do you resist it? Play with your co-workers. SCORPIO: You’re preparing for your next great accomplishment. Going to unusual places is on your agenda. Turn hard luck into hard cash. Show your best talents. You may be asked to be the brains behind a speculative opportunity. SAGITTARIUS: Change or die! This could very well be your mantra this week. After this weekend you’ll be breathing a big sigh of relief. Your charming ways are still intact. Don’t leave town without paying your bills. People are depending on you. CAPRICORN: Embrace your own needs while you embrace the needs of others. Romance isn’t out of the question. However, you’ll need to use an original strategy. The weekend promises to deliver a good time. Stay positive as things turn around. AQUARIUS: Allusions dissolve and fade away. The day of the Gipper is over. It’s time to adopt a different type of Aquarian vision. Helping those less fortunate is a way of saving your own ass in the long run. When you love, you love strong. PISCES: Chaos is more than a theory to you. It’s an element that you’ve been navigating with finesse and grace. Keep your hand to the plow when it comes to meeting your creative goals. Now is your chance to have a revolution of art and culture.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
The anti-authority on all things ideal Thursday marked the opening of Lahaina’s newest club, Paradice Bluz. But before we went, Jen, Sonja and I watched in stunned silence as a TV commercial claimed that a recent study proved dairy products slim your waistline. “Hmm,” said Sonja finally. “I ate a lot of ice cream today—I’m gonna look fabulous tomorrow!” When we all did get to the new club, we delighted in the coolness that was heading down a mysterious alleyway, walking a flight of stairs and finding one of the most attractive bars ever on Maui. It’s an underground oasis! It was also nice to see Lahaina’s bar-elite dressed up—by which, I mean, not wearing slippers and tank tops—and happily diverting their normal routine for a night. I was feeling a bit skittish so I went and hid at the Oxygen Bar with Sonja and Dennis. After spending 15 minutes with tubes up my nose, I asked one of the staff if it’s possible to overdose. He assured me that it was not. “Hey, they give oxygen at the hospitals everyday!” somebody helpfully added. Just the word “hospitals” gave me pause for concern, so I hopped over to the bar and lapped up a quick Jack and soda. Meanwhile, Jen was being mistaken for Holoholo Girl, which amused me greatly. Her, not so much. We ran into the talented and charismatic Tony Mucci, who is a regular guest tattoo artist at Skin Deep in Lahaina. I met him years ago with a mutual friend. “Hey Tony! Remember me?” I asked him. “Uh, yeah!” he said, as he looked at me quizzically and somewhat worried. “Did we, uh…?” Uh, no. Laughing, I turned to another Skin Deep guest artist, German Mike. We talked a bit about marriage. I don’t think I was offering but somehow I convinced myself—in my head—that, yes, I would marry him. You know, if I had to. Jen agreed. The next day Jen got tattooed. While she was being happily stabbed by millions of little needles back at the shop, BJ and I went to Pancho & Lefty’s for margaritas. Sly, the bartender, looked at us skeptically. “You know we have a dress code here,” he said. “Don’t you have a dirty t-shirt or something you can put on?” Afterward, we went to Whale’s Tale for celebratory cocktails with Jen , Mucci, Rainbow, Dani and a bunch of other people. Rainbow managed to pull off wearing an upside down NBA headband without looking like a crazy lady—it’s the dimples—Mucci bought all the ladies fresh flower leis ‘cause he’s smooth like that and Dani made friends with an interesting mesh-wearing chap reading books (!) at the bar. Saturday night I went to the Pono Players’ Organic Laughter comedy improv at the Studio Maui in Haiku. The performers were quite witty but I was disturbed by the colonicsobsessed themes the audience kept throwing out for inclusion in their skits. What is UP, upcountry? Whatever happened to good old-fashioned bulimia and laxatives? The Fourth of July meant beer drinking and barbeque at the Sugar Shack. Well, not really at the Sugar Shack, but at the Sugar Shack’s neighbor’s area. I’m not allowed to mention our dear neighbor’s name or anything as per our agreement the first day I moved in. “Hi! Welcome to the neighborhood!” our neighbor said to me, upon introduction. “Don’t ever put my name in your column.” All in all, it’s been really hard to get back into the swing of things on Maui this week. Why, just last weekend I was surrounded by tens of thousands of beautiful naked men in San Francisco. I mean, how do you top that? I just so happened to land myself smack dab in the middle of the city’s infamous Gay Pride Festival on Market Street. In essence, it’s a huge party of trance-dancing, strawberry margarita drinking queens and the kings who love them—both men and women alike. But it’s also a chance for the gay community to speak about political issues, generally by way of sign waving. This year, they centered on gay marriage and the hope of mainstream acceptance. One older gentleman stood proudly baring a sign that said “Gay for 81 years” and on the back it said, “Maybe it’s just a phase.” But while more than 4,000 couples were wed in February when San Francisco decided to issue licenses for same-sex couples, “the marriage licenses are in judicial limbo, facing legal challenges before the California Supreme Court,” reported the San Francisco Examiner. But as that paper’s reporter Alison Soltau wrote on June 28, the feeling of the Festival was best captured on a parade placard that read, “We are here, we are queer, we are registered at Macy’s.” MTW

You asked for it, and now you’re going to get it. Finally, it’s time for Maui Time’s official Best of Maui issue. And like you, we know the best that Maui has to offer. It’s Las Vegas, baby! Lots of people give you this island’s best food, arts, politics, sports, leisure and a few goods and services here and there, but only we will give the very best—Vegas-style!
