One of the major criticisms facing book publishers today is that new books coming off the presses are just so boring. Their covers are drab, broken up with simplistic graphics and dull, pointless blurbs. You hardly ever look over a book cover these days and find shocking words like, well, “shocking.” When was the last time you glanced over one of your own books and read the words “starlet,” “naked,” “sexual” or “feel hot peppers up my thighs?” If these words interest, even excite you, then you must run out to your local book peddler and grab a copy of Barbara Payton’s new I Am Not Ashamed. It’s just a small paperback, but trust me—it will not disappear into your bookshelves. Ashamed has that gritty, urban, old movie feel. The cover is amber, giving it the appearance like one of those old movie photographs or even trashy scandal sheets. There’s even a silhouetted Hollywood skyline running along the bottom of the front cover. Okay, “skyline” is a bit extravagant—it’s a tiny rendition of Grauman’s Chinese Theater with the word “HOLLYWOOD” plastered over it. But you get the point. The back cover also features five additional The book is apparently a tell-all tale from quotes about various Hollywood personalities “the bawdy and beautiful Barbara Payton” Payton knew—men who obviously didn’t fall who apparently enjoyed a “$10,000-ainto the category of “strangers.” week silver screen lifestyle… in America’s For example, next to the tiny black and conservative 1950s.” But then, the back white picture of James cover continues, Cagney is the line “He this happy life “was torn from her by Barbara Payton, Holloway House, Los gave me my big break. Eating the Planet How killing animals kills the Earth
Attack of the Killer Turkeys Linda Day is a slight Asian-American woman with shoulder-length brown hair and a habit of shutting her eyes and puckering her whole face when she’s trying to remember a fact. The University of Hawaii’s Office of Sustainability spokesperson, she did a lot of that Saturday night during her presentation at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on how eating meat is destroying the environment. Day’s appearance was another in a series of Vegetarian Society of Hawaiisponsored lectures. The July 10 event attracted only a couple dozen people, barely a tenth of the audience that came out a few months ago to see Alicia

Silverstone denounce breast milk and meateating practices. And it wasn’t nearly as compelling as former cattleman Howard Lyman’s recent down-home indictment of the beef industry, but Day’s speech was nonetheless informative—if you like spending an hour hearing about the immense pollution and destruction caused by farm animals. But she didn’t exactly start off strong. “I’m not an expert on this,” she said, standing barefoot in a purple sleeveless dress at the front of the church. “The Vegetarian Society tapped me to do this, so I basically got a lot of stuff off the internet. I don’t want everything to be sad, so hopefully there will be a happy ending to this presentation.” Day was in little danger. After all, she was basically preaching to the choir. Bumper stickers in the church parking lot included “What Liberal Media?” and “If animals could talk, we’d all be vegetarians.” Day’s lecture pivoted on the following assessment: virtually every major environmental problem, including air and water pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and climate change can trace its root cause back to food production. She then cited a whole host of statistics taken from the United Nations, U.S. Department of Agriculture and a few universities. She talked about things like the conversion of 25,000 square kilometers of Amazonian rain forest in 2002 to cattle grazing land. At the current rate of loss, Day said a tenth of all the world’s living species would soon be lost. Such destruction isn’t limited to South America. In the U.S., the acreage of farmland dedicated to fruit and vegetable production is negligible compared to that used for animals. Day cited a 1998 USDA study cataloging over 600 million acres of U.S. land dedicated just to cattle grazing. It got a little heavy when Day started talking about the fact that farm animals, which outnumber humans in the U.S. 30 to one, require 30 times human water usage but produce 130 times the fecal matter. And that’s not even taking into account their massive methane flatulence that’s dissolving the Earth’s atmospheric ozone layer. Then she showed a slide of something awful called a “manure lagoon” in Elmwood, Illinois. The point, naturally, was that factory farms produce a lot of crap, which dumps toxic ammonia into the soil, water and air. But it didn’t help matters that her bar graph titled “The Scoop on Poop” was brown. Day, after all, was trying to keep it light. Which was kind of hard to do, considering audience members were offering friendly interruptions like “Vegetarianism is the way of the future—It has to be, if we are to survive.” “This is hard to make fun,” she admitted at one point, recalling the line in the lecture press

release saying she would be giving a “fact-filled but fun” talk. “It’s pretty damn depressing.” But she tried. At one point, Day quoted a stat from a book called Judaism and Vegetarianism. “I didn’t even know that was an issue,” she said of the title with a shrug. Later, she got a chorus of “oohs” when she said that in California, “you can save more water by not eating one pound of beef than if you didn’t shower for six months.” At the end, a young woman who had sat through most of the 70-minute lecture with a shirt pulled over her head like a shawl asked the rest of the audience if they’d seen the provegetarian documentary Peaceable Kingdom. “If everyone saw that,” she said, “no one would eat meat anymore.” “Have you guys seen Michael Moore’s new film?” Day suddenly asked. “Holy moly.”

VIOLATION Section 08-101-80(b)(3): hindering, interfering, opposing or molesting a liquor control officer in the performance of the officer’s duty
LC OFFICER James Kendrick
REPORT Discussing the merits of the six charges— including, but not limited to time sheet problems and an employee allegedly drinking on duty— that landed Giovani’s before the Adjudication Board on July 8 is beyond the scope of this column. But it is fair to say that Count 1 started it all. Had that never happened, Giovani’s never would have gone before the Board, been found guilty on all charges and ended up fined a total of $4,000. Kendrick—a former PI and Honolulu PD vice cop who’s been with the LC a little over a year— had shown up at Giovani’s during a private Christmas party for Teralani Charters, which rented out the whole restaurant. In his report, Kendrick said he was there to “conduct routine inspections.” But during the trial, he said he stopped by because he “wanted to get something to eat.” In any case, while attempting “to observe” the party, Kendrick says a mysterious Teralani employee named “Noreen”—who didn’t actually work for Giovani’s and never appeared during the hearing or was identified beyond her first name—grabbed him and tried to shove him out door. “I don’t know you,” he testified she yelled at him after he flashed his badge. “I know all the Liquor Commissioners. I’m going to make some phone calls.” Ironically, it was only Teralani’s Noreen who apparently “molested” Kendrick. In fact, no one disputed that Giovani’s employees did everything they could to help Kendrick. “[A]ll the regular employees were quite helpful,” Giovani’s attorney said to Kendrick during the hearing. “Yes, they were,” Kendrick replied.

LOCALNEWS WEDNESDAY, JULY 7 Got up, showered, ate breakfast, then reeled at the really awful story in today’s Maui News exposing the frightening truth that “Maui Democrats” like the fact that John Edwards is John Kerry’s vice presidential nominee. This amazing thesis is backed by quotes from four Maui Democrats: U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawaii), Hawaii’s representative on the Democratic Party Platform Committee Ave Diaz, Maui Democratic Party chairman James “Kimo” Apana and former chairman Jonathan Starr. These “local reaction” stories are the bane of modern daily journalism. They tell the reader virtually nothing beyond a not-at-all controversial revelation that four Democratic Party insiders agree with the Democratic presidential candidate’s vice presidential selection. What are they going to do, bitch and moan in public? These people are partisans—their job is to support whatever Democratic candidates do… Hey, speaking of The Maui News, they just bought The Haleakala Times. Today the News has a tiny story mentioning it. Well, sort of mentioning it. Titled “Hawaii Publications buys Haleakala Times,” the blurb confirmed month-long rumors that the 11-year old biweekly published by Ken and Adrienne Pinsky was on the auction block. Though the story insisted that nothing was going to change in the Times, it also included the cryptic statement that “Hawaii Publications also publishes The Maui Bulletin and The Lahaina News.” While true, it completely ignores the tiny little ethical disclosure that Hawaii Publications also publishes The Maui News.

ty claims once again stalled in the U.S. Senate— this time thanks to right-wing Republican, Senate Majority Leader and upstart friend of Hawaiian independence radicals Bill Frist. Okay, so Frist doesn’t give even a tiny damn about the sovereignty claims of Hawaiian people. But he does happen to hate bill amendments, which is how Hawaii’s Senators— Daniels Akaka and Inouye—tried to get the bill to a vote. They actually thought they could get away with attaching it to a bill severely limiting class action lawsuits, according to an Associated Press story. Frist’s move seems to have doomed both bills, at least for now.

State Senator J. Kalani English (D, 6th District) officially files for reelection. In the accompanying press release, both his campaign chairperson and a supporter refer to English’s “leadership.” This is remarkable—politicians today all talk about “showing leadership”—but according to release English actually carried out “leadership.” That rhetorical fact alone probably puts English in the top one percentile of American elected officials… Today it took two people from The Maui News to write a frontpage, above the fold story announcing that the Launiupoko intersection on Honoapiilani Highway hasn’t had a crippling traffic jam since Saturday… Well, the time to enter the First Annual Maui Time Sucker’s Contest advertised in last week’s Coconut Wireless is officially closed. And I’d like to thank all our entries—I’d love to give all of you a prize, but hey—I only have one copy of Bill O’Reilly’s Those Who Trespass. Really, you all deserve to win—all NONE of you. That’s right, the First Annual Maui Time Sucker’s Contest received exactly zero entries. Now for your usual check under your bottle cap or pick six lucky numbers contest, zero entries would be bad. I’m reminded of this very simple but true statement while looking over the “Maui home prices still sizzling” article in today’s News. Local Democratic Party activist Ave Diaz just learned a tough lesson in national politics. She sits on the party’s Platform Committee. They just thrashed out the party’s stance on the war in Iraq. But at the committee meeting in Hollywood, Florida, she realized her Dennis Kucinich-idealism was no match for the John Kerry pragmatism—no matter how misguided and ultimately foolish the presidential nominee may be. Diaz wanted the party to denounce the lies and crookedness that led to the war and call for an immediate withdrawal. But Diaz told The Maui News that the Kerry people insisted on a far mushier “Democrats disagree” platform. The platform actually says that a withdrawal would damage Iraq, which “inevitably would become a haven for terrorists and a destabilizing force in the Middle East.” What’s this “would” nonsense? Iraq IS a haven for terrorists and a “destabilizing force” in the region. And it will remain so as long as 150,000 U.S. combat troops stay there.
TUESDAY, JULY 13 State governor Linda Lingle announces that she just signed a bill mandating all state officers—including Lingle—need to attend mandatory ethics lectures. At first opposing the bill, Lingle seemed to warm to the idea after the Honolulu Star-Bulletin began looking into her decision to allow the private non-profit lobbying group Citizens Achieving Reform in Education (CARE) to operate out of the governor’s office. Of course, the ethics lectures won’t begin until January—two months after the November election. Yeah, that makes sense. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD REALLY SMART DOGS Canadian researchers writing in the journal Neurology in June reported 18 of 122 dogs belonging to epileptic children were able to sense, minutes ahead of time, when a child was about to have a seizure, and about 30 others showed unique reactions to a seizure event (including in some cases trying to protect the child from danger). Also in June, researchers at Germany’s Max Planck Institute reported that Rico, a border collie they have studied for several years, can distinguish by name more than 200 objects and can even figure out the names of unfamiliar objects associated with familiar ones (attributed, as in the epilepsy cases, to the dog’s high sensitivity to sight, sound and motion).

Frank Morosky of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has introduced charcoal-lined diapers, at $20 to $50, designed to reduce the odor of dogs’ flatulence. A Cedar Rapids veterinarian said he didn’t think the diapers would sell because so many owners revel in their dog’s flatulence as a way of distracting attention from their own.

Ken James, 64, died in February when he fell off a stolen bicycle in Melbourne, Australia and hit his head. Police later found 435 bicycles and hundreds of parts in his home, stacked to the ceiling in every room (only a few of the bikes having been legitimately acquired). And in May, a court in York, England, banned Norman Hutchins, 53, from all National Health Service hospitals and doctors’ offices, based on 40 complaints since January of his attempting to grab surgical gowns and masks for his collection. He was described by his lawyer as “not a well man.”
After 13 wrongful years in prison and five more detained as a “violent sexual predator,” James Rodriguez, 43, finally realized last year that he would have to start lying and “confess” to molesting those two boys in the 1980s and seek “rehabilitation.” Otherwise, California’s Atascadero State Hospital would never release him. He told an Associated Press reporter that he sought advice from the hospital’s pedophiles on what to say and how to act, and he finally convinced doctors that he was, indeed, so very remorseful for his “attraction to kids.” Then, as he was set for a hearing in April, his two “victims” finally recanted, telling officials that they had made up the whole thing.

The O’Connor Factor Republican justices regret appointing Bush “This is terrible,” Sandra Day O’Connor said when she heard that Al Gore had won Florida on Election Night in 2000. According to Newsweek, O’Connor, then 69, wanted to retire from the Supreme Court. But she wanted to leave under a Republican president so that her seat would go to a fellow Republican. According to court watchers, O’Connor was so eager to retire to her beloved Arizona that she overlooked the constitutional separation of powers by agreeing to hear Bush v. Gore, effectively appointing George W. Bush to the presidency. Both O’Connor and Chief Justice William Rehnquist, 80, were expected to retire during the last three years. Yet now they’ll remain in office at least through November 2004. She’ll be 73 and he’ll be 81. Why haven’t they retired? With the exception of hard-right zealots Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, the high court’s Republicans appear to be suffering from a major case of buyer’s remorse. Six days after Bush’s riot-torn inauguration in 2001, USA Today reported, “Sandra Day O’Connor
has told people close to her that in her two decades on the court, she’s never seen such anger over a case. O’Connor, more than any justice, has seemed disturbed by the public wrath directed at the court.” By hearing and ruling upon Bush v. Gore, the Supremes hoped to bring closure to a seemingly endless recount crisis. Three years, two wars and thousands of lies later, however, the 2000 election is more controversial than ever. The electorate is at least as polarized as it was during the ‘60s; many Democrats worry that this year’s election will again by decided by judicial fiat. Fifty-one percent of Americans still say that Bush is an illegitimate pretender to the Oval Office. Meanwhile, the White House has governed so far to the right of traditional conservative Republicanism that Justices O’Connor and Rehnquist have rebuked the Bushies on a variety of important cases coming before the bench. Joining an 8-1 majority that skewered the Administration’s indefinite detention policy in the war on terror, O’Connor and Rehnquist ruled that the “enemy combatant” detainee Yaser Esam Hamdi, an American citizen cap-
tured as a Taliban prisoner of war, deserved a “meaningful opportunity” to face charges against him in a court of law. In Locke v. Davey, both justices ruled against a Bush-led assault on the separation of church and state, writing that states don’t have to grant college scholarships for private religious training. O’Connor, a swing voter since her Reaganera appointment, has sided with the court’s liberal bloc more often than previously. She has cast votes ending the legal limbo of Bush’s inmates at the Guantánamo concentration
fear that the Bush Administration is too radical for America. Going to war for false or fictional reasons while supporting the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11, building a global network of gulags where thousands of people are denied their fundamental human rights and torture is sanctioned by top officials, using the war on terrorism as an excuse to spy on domestic political opponents, privatizing the military and attempting to turn fundamentalist Christianity into a state-funded religion are the acts of wild-eyed revolutionaries, not

By Samantha Campos The hype began a year ago. The talk of the town was that a club was opening on Front Street. A real club, with live bands imported regularly from the mainland. It would have a VIP section and greenroom for famous musicians. Big names were whispered—maybe Prince will show up, or Santana, or Jack Johnson! People speculated. And they waited. And the buzz continued. Meanwhile, another club in Lahaina called Breakwater opened and closed within six months. The name “Paradice Bluz” started popping up everywhere, with opening dates that began in December, then February, pushed back to May. Anticipation escalated. In fact, there were problems—money, permits, ghosts. On Thursday, July 1, I walked down an alleyway off Lahaina’s bustling Front Street. Between a women’s tropical clothing store and a high-end island jeweler, behind the kiosk selling Hawaiian music, two tall men stood checking ID’s under a wooden sign that read, “Paradice Bluz.” After they cleared me, I walked down a flight of stairs painted like piano keys, down a small set of blood-red carpeted steps into a large, dimly lit room. To my left was the hostess booth, where a photographer was taking pictures of a group of dolled-up girls in varying forms of tight, black dresses and stilettos. Contemporary oil paintings and various neon colors hung from the brick-lined walls surrounding the entrance. Guys in aloha shirts and slacks smoked cigars in front of a mural depicting a tropical island scene. To my right, past the two pool tables, cigar humidor, fortune-telling Wizard and lit up Rat Pack and Scarface photos, I walked towards the cushiony, black leather couches, where more of the fashionable clubbers lounged on beanbag chairs and a couple of oversized red and black dice cushions. The owner of Paradice Bluz, Chris Mahon, wearing a black suit and covered in leis, greeted me at the expansive, beautifully crafted wooden bar. After offering me something to drink, Mahon led me to the greenroom—the intimate musicians’ lounge with a 20-foot couch and hideaway exit. There we talked about why it took so long to have his nightclub dream realized.
Ten years ago, Mahon was walking by the newly constructed but now defunct Planet Hollywood. He noticed the stairs on the side of the building leading down to a basement. Oh, man, he thought, that would be the bomb hip-hop club! He started envisioning a dungeon where he would paint everything black and play techno music with

live reggae and hip-hop acts. But being a mere 24 years old, the idea was quickly forgotten. Mahon knew he wanted to open a nightclub when he first started working as head doorman at Studio 505, a star-studded hotspot on Maui 14 years ago. “The first night, the energy that I felt was like, I couldn’t replace it with anything,” said Mahon. “It was just part of my blood.”
Mahon went on to a partnership at Gaby’s Pizzeria, where he began planning and designing an upstairs club, which was soon halted when the money fell through. Then he focused on organizing an Independence Day Bash with seven bands at the Royal Lahaina in Kaanapali. But at the last minute, the annual fireworks moved to Lahaina—along with 15,000 people. “I lost $25,000,” said Mahon. “A couple
“But when you come down to Paradice Bluz, have something nice on, you know, a little touch of class.” -Chris Mahon He started looking around, seeing what he could do, what was going on behind the bar, the management, started to get involved with booking entertainment. He began work at a Mexican place, Casa de Mateo, bringing in Latin jazz and salsa and doing dance contests. He learned what little he could from the very simple bar there— basically, just margaritas—before he was offered a job at Reilley’s Steakhouse. “They threw me right behind the bar on a busy night and I had no idea,” Mahon said. “So my bar manager was up ‘til two o’clock in the morning with me everyday ‘cause I’d call him every five-ten minutes, asking him what a drink was.”
months after that I had a stress stroke and was paralyzed. Yeah, it was heavy. Yeah, I was stressed out—I owed all my great friends money. I’ve never been in that situation before. And they put all that belief into me, you know?” That was two years ago. Planet Hollywood had since closed and was in the process of reopening as other businesses. Mahon went back to Gaby’s. Forgetting all about the basement, he put together a proposal for rooftop dining but was beat out by a big corporation with a little bit more power—and money. Undaunted, Mahon turned his attention down below.
“We’re walking down the stairs and we walk down this alleyway and I say, ‘Okay, well if I can’t have upstairs, let me have my little Cheers bar downstairs,’” said Mahon. “And [the landlord] goes, ‘That’s a hell of an idea! Give me a proposal.’ But when I got home, I’m like, wait a second, I’m not a Cheers bar owner—I’m a club owner. That’s what I’m meant to do. I’m gonna do a jazz club!” So Mahon changed the whole proposal and submitted this jazz, blues, comedy idea he had, inspired by a recent trip to Las Vegas. “That was also in my blood. I like the energy,” he said. “I like the fact that over there, you can be yourself and nobody cares. Nobody talks about it, nobody says nothin’, everybody’s in their own little world—anything goes. I think that’s what we’re about. “I don’t know anybody that doesn’t like Vegas, really,” said Mahon. “You can walk out on the street with a beer. Amazing. I put my beer down and they’re like, ‘You can take it with you,’ and I’m like, ‘What? You gotta be kiddin’ me!’ I swear I had no idea I could take my beer with me out of the casino and go to the next one.” Mahon was tired of bouncing, of dealing with too much attitude, too much testosterone. He wanted to give Lahaina Town a facelift. He didn’t think it should be just about tourist shops and art galleries. He wanted to integrate some culture, some fun. “We don’t need strip clubs but we do need a couple Wild On bars, we need a Coyote Ugly here, we need to be able to say ‘shit’ in our own place, you know? I’m over 21 years old and you say if I say ‘shit,’ I can’t have a drink or you’re gonna cite me and I’m gonna get written up. Or if you’re showing too much cleavage or if you’re showing butt cheeks or… C’mon. There’s vulgar, then there’s accepted. Let me make the decision—I’m running the club, I have that kind of respect for my customers, you know.” But the obstacles really began after the business proposal was accepted. Mahon then experienced what he likes to call “Investor Hell.” He dealt with people lying, mainly—people with no financial background, empty promises, fake attorneys, fictitious websites, phony financial advisors—basically, scam artists. He made phone calls, did research, but was eventually scammed out of thousands of dollars before he decided to go grassroots, putting copies of his business proposal in Kaanapali Hillside mailboxes. His consultant told him he might just get one call from those 100 copies,

but Mahon persevered. “I was just getting it out there because there’s a lot of angels out there,” said Mahon. “A lot of angel investors that’d love to invest in something, you know, put their money into a good place, if they believe in the concept.” Pho

came into Gaby’s and wanted to do just that— put his money into opening a nightclub on Maui. Stunned, Mahon agreed to meet with the angel the next day. “According to my consultant, that doesn’t happen,” said Mahon. “You could have the best idea in the world, you can have 1000 business plans and you might get 10-percent response, at the most. And maybe, one or two of them are legitimate. “So I meet with [the investor] the next day and he was very professional,” continued Mahon. “He gave me a deposit and it just went through and it was killer, everything was good and then, I didn’t hear from him for a while.” While the investor had an “emergency family situation” to tend to on the mainland, Mahon struggled again to find other investors for the “step by step.” He needed money to make the architectural design, money to get the plumbing company deposits, money to just get it started. He began selling off equity for work to be done. Whatever it took. When the construction began, Mahon was down at the club every night until six in the morning, busting concrete with guys he had doing it for half of what they normally charge, “just from the hui—just from being here 25 years.” And from making the right phone calls, trading in favors. When it came to permits, Mahon wanted to cover all his bases in advance. He had the necessary officials come in and name exactly what he needed to do, which meant he had to redraw his mechanicals, paying an extra $2,000. And increase his fresh air down in the club, which took about $18,000 last minute. “So yeah, permitting took more time than I expected,” said Mahon. There were other obstacles, of course. Mahon was also faced with the only basement on Front Street never designed for anything but retail and a little snack shop. When it came to the plumbing, they had to cut trenches from the back room to the front door to get to the lift station, which takes the water up. “Well, the concrete’s 12 inches thick and every six inches, there’s rebar that’s about three or four inches around that were actually handmade back in, like, 1916!” said Mahon. “So we had guys down here with concrete cutters, passing out almost because of the carbon monoxide, because there’s no air down here and then we

How Chris Mahon finally opened Paradice Bluz started having freaky stuff happen. “Now the freaky stuff—to this day, I’ve had probably 16-17 people that have actually experienced weird stuff.” Naturally, I asked him what he meant by “weird stuff.” “Oh, very ghostly stuff,” he said. “Girl, you wouldn’t believe this place! No, I mean it— like, you feel something swipe across your back… Lights going off…” Like the times when they were cutting concrete and the fans would go off. They had one circuit they were plugging all their fans and the machines into, but only the fans would turn off while the machines stayed on. Mahon thought it might be a power thing so he asked his electrician. “No, it’s the same circuit,” he said. “You can’t surge one, it would cut the whole thing.” Mahon said his guys were like, “Dude, that’s weird. You think [the ghosts] were turning off the fans so we’d die from the carbon monoxide or do you think they were turning off the fans so that we would turn off the machines so that we would stop making the carbon monoxide, saving our lives?” “I’m like, Whoa, that’s heavy,” said Mahon. There were also random drumbeats through the speakers. And the brand new neon lights that would actually fade and flicker at the same time every night—between 12 and 1:30. And the time Mahon came down and had a floodlight attached to a ladder, with the cord

hanging off the ladder. But by the time Mahon went to get the extension cord, plugged it in and came back 30 seconds later, the extension was woven in and out of the ladder.
The night after Paradice Bluz opened, Mahon had a traditional Hawaiian blessing at the club, with the full ceremony and everything. “It was really nice,” he said. “I should’ve done it on the first night ‘cause that’s when everything broke down! If anything could go wrong, it went wrong.” Mahon’s biggest obstacle right now is implementing the dress code. “All my best buddies in the world, all my local boys that I grew up with, 80-percent of them will respect it, 20-percent are like, ‘Eh, it’s my town, it’s my slippahs!’” said Mahon. “But they’ll eventually realize that you can go somewhere else any day of the week. But when you come down to Paradice Bluz, have something nice on, you know, a little touch of class. “I turned away 50 people last night because they had slippers on. Fifty!” he said. “But you know what? People that don’t understand the service industry, and the glitches and the problems that go on—I don’t care how experienced you are in the business—15 years experience—if you come into a new place, man, there’s gonna be… Give us two or three weeks, you know?” MTW

Less Talking, More Tasting Crashing the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival
PHOTO: TONY NOVAK-CLIFFORD
I’d just walked into the sprawling resort when the woman started complaining. “I’m not much of a wine drinker so all this money is wasted on me,” she said, standing in line behind me. “My friend said it starts out civilized,” said another woman. “But then after six rounds, it turns into a slosh fest. It can get pretty ugly.” “Oh, well, we don’t like ugly,” said the first woman. There was nothing ugly about the sweeping views of a Molokai sunset on the oceanfront bluff of the Kapalua Bay Hotel. There was nothing ugly about the more than 150 wineries pouring their finest varietals or the tables full of freshly sliced meats and cheeses or the sweetly flowing chocolate fountain at the Grand Tasting on Friday. There certainly wasn’t anything ugly about the tuna alla porchetta with grilled figs cipolline agrodolce from Vino, or Pacific’O/I’O’s cardamom scented onaga with porcini and truffle foam from Sunday’s Seafood Festival at the RitzCarlton. Nothing at all ugly about the hundreds of well-dressed people happily tasting wine, sampling seafood dishes and talking story. The only ugly part might have been the battle to get one of those highly coveted, gourmet chocolate ding-dong desserts at the last night’s event. Nothing a little Josef Leitz ’03 Reisling Kabinett couldn’t fix! Friday night’s Grand Tasting at the Kapalua Bay Hotel highlighted an impressive array of about a dozen themed wine tents, including the immensely pop-
ular Napa Valley Greats tent, situated on the edge of a promontory overlooking the bay. Acting on a hot tip from a friend, I ventured there first, passing the Sparkling Wine Meets Italian Bubbly and Southern Italy Meets Southern Hemisphere tents. Once there, I walked up to the first sampling of four varieties of Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon, modestly ranging in suggested retail price from $17-$55. I took my first tasting very seriously, stopping to review the cards on each one, sipping and slurping slowly, silently trying to interpret the complex flavors objectively. But as I looked around, people were less serious. They were downright giddy, in fact. And everyone kept talking about “the Cakebread.” I followed the commotion to one lone pouring server named Larry. He was a nice-looking man, solemnly pouring tasting after tasting. He stood behind the last two bottles of Cakebread Cellars: A 2001 Chardonnay Reserve ($50) and a 2000 Benchland Select ($95). I watched as excited patrons rushed up to Larry, calling him by name, with the event’s complimentary KWFF-etched glass extended. Often, I saw the same people coming back for seconds—or thirds—in no time at all. “You’re the most popular guy here!” the female pourer to his left said. Larry just smiled. After I sampled the Duckhorn Merlot ($80), I decided to leave the heyday of the Napa tent and head towards higher ground—you know, where they were keeping the Osso Bucco with Risotto! Along the way, I passed Senator J. Kalani English pointing out to a group of admirers that the island across the way was Molokai, not Lanai, to a group of admirers, and someone else saying, “You know, I think the world is flat!”

So much to taste, so little time I also ran into a wine buddy, Steve Tualemoso, who talked at length about the regions of wines, the culture of winemaking in these regions and the terroire, or the concept that soils can directly influence the character of a wine. I learned a lot from him, actually. The thing is, you get what you want out of these events. A lot of people go for the virtually risk-free chance to sample new wines and flavors or to meet other connoisseurs, both amateur and professional. Others go for the wines they know best, downing them repeatedly while they see familiar faces and talk excitedly about geographical conditions, like
the world being flat. Me, I’m more of the less talking, more tasting kind of crowd. On Sunday, while the Kapalua Seafood Festival featured the best in island cuisine, great wines and fantastic live music, it was decidedly hotter with more bodies and a greater sense of urgency to get at all that goodness. Even the silent auction tent was significantly more crowded. Auctioned items like hotel stays, spa treatments and restaurant vouchers were quickly snatched up. A $100 gift certificate for Mama’s Fish House went for a mere $95. MTW

I used to help my dad at Aloha Restaurant way back. I was about 11 and we’d make Kalua Pig. We’d do 10 to 15 pigs a week. That’s a real team-oriented thing and hard work, but I enjoyed it. Then I worked at Tokyo Tei when I was 16. I did dishwashing and prep, but always watched the cooks as I went along. Cooking became my passion. I asked the boss for her recipe, but she wouldn’t give it to me and just said, “It has something to do with potato starch.” I got my foot in the door at the Renaissance Hotel. I used to do Teppanyaki at Hana Gion, the fine dining Japanese restaurant. That’s cooking in front of everyone. But after six years of working at the Renaissance, I needed a change. [Then] my sister, who was a cleaner at Ono Restaurant after renovations, told the owner about me. I was just here to help in the beginning, but they were kinda impressed by what I could do and asked me to be the head of the kitchen. I’m an amateur at this, and already in this one month, I feel like I’ve learned more than most chefs learn in their positions for years. You’re pretty much in a position to be on top of everything, including consistency, food costs and personnel. It is a lot of responsibility. I’m just now starting to get comfortable. My signature dish is a little pupu I call “Mahi Kamikaze,” inspired by my friend Sean Kaumeheiwa. After work at the Renaissance he’d always say, “So what brah, couple Kamikazes?” The dish itself is Tempura fried strips of Mahi on a bed of bitter greens, tossed with a secret sweet and spicy sauce. I call it Kamikaze because the name intrigues people. They try it, really like it and come back. My friend Ednor Lat taught me most of what I know about Japanese Cuisine, but I’d like to say that my mom taught me the most about cooking—just the way she puts three scoops of Aloha in everything she makes. Aqua Porn All week long, at the Maui Ocean Center! [SEA SEX EDUCATION] According to the press release: During Sex and the Sea Week, officially July 18 through 24, “special naturalist and guest speaker presentations will focus on coral spawning, when coral releases sperm and eggs into the water column.” The kind people who have devoted their lives to the cause of sexual reproductive study of marine invertebrates have been able to predict when rice coral will spawn, and we, the blissfully ignorant public, have been invited for a little peep show action. Tuesday night, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., is when the magic happens, and it’s nothing but raw and raunchy rice coral spawning “in the romantic setting of the Living Reef, with candles, passed pupus and themed drink specials to ‘set the mood.’” Oh, come on and say it with me now, folks: Awww, yeah... A portion of the admission will be donated to Project S.E.A.-Link, a local non-profit organization which promotes marine Science, Education, and Awareness by providing a Link between students, teachers, scientists, the local community, the general public, other non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies. Pono Players
‘Aha Hula Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the MACC’s Castle Theater
Friday, 8 & 10 p.m. at Bada Bing! [COMEDY] I used to be really addicted to this show on TV called “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” that was hosted by Drew Carey. Yeah, that’s right—The Drew Carey. Anyway, I loved how these four extremely talented and ridiculously funny performers would be at the mercy of whatever outlandish themes were thrown out at them to act in little improvisational skits. I think it goes along with the idea that it’s just really fun to watch people squirm, too. Anyway, the Pono Players don’t so much squirm as they just have a lot of fun making you laugh with their comic chemistry, physicality and quick wit. Because it’s improv, every show is different, so you can go back again and again, just in case your own special, twisted theme didn’t get picked the first time!

It’s hard to get more Hawaiian culture than a good hula. And the best hula comes in the form of the ‘Aha Hula. This is their seventh show at the MACC. The 2004 show is The Art of Haku Mele, in which dancers and chanters will continue the tradition,” according to the MACC publicity materials. In conclusion, it’s a night of good authentic Hawaiian dancing and music. Tickets are $25. Call 242-7469 for more info. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

DJ From Down Undah Saturday, 10 p.m. at Compadres; Next Thursday, at Casanova [IT’S A DJ THING] Mark Walton is a very well-known and respected DJ from Australia and he loves what he does. I know this because I read it online and I believe everything I read—especially when it comes to DJs. By the way, I’ve learned a lot about DJs this past year. Maybe a little bit more than I wanted to but the point is, every DJ is different and they all deserve a chance to show what they got, as far as their skills on the turntable are concerned. The fact is, DJs are not only sound technicians, but also creative musicians who tend to have a supernatural knowledge about all things music, so when you’re out polluting yourself with the same ol’ same ol’ every weekend, be open to their groove and heed this advice: Change is good. New is nice. And don’t take everything so goshdarn personally!

Rally for Ralph Sunday, 2:30 p.m., Hapa’s in Kihei [POLITICAL] Ralph Nader is probably the smartest guy running for U.S. President. The fact that partisans on the left and right despise him can only mean that he knows what his wish to bring true democracy to American politics and business scares the right folks. People talk about Nader “stealing” votes from John Kerry, but hey— what difference does it make who gets into office if the winner will just ignore social justice, the increasing gap between rich and poor and the emerging dominance of multinational corporations over the U.S. political landscape? Oh wait, it does make a difference—Bush is an idiot. Anyway, it never hurts to listen to people who really understand the underlying causes of the nation’s myriad problems. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
[MUSIC] This year marks the 30th Anniversary Tour for childhood buddies DJ Pratt and Malani Bilyeu, who, at the urging of Cecilio & Kapono, did the whole garage band thing and became hugely successful soon thereafter....Thirty years later, their band Kalapana is still going strong, with sold-out concerts, Na Hoku awards, and a respectable fan base. Celebrate with them as they perform all their greatest hits, including "Night Bird," "For You I'd Chase a Rainbow," and many more. Tickets *$35, *$25, $17.50. Call 242-SHOW for info.

The main catfight occurs between the Disney-led efforts of budding actresses Anne Hathaway, Mandy Moore, Hillary Duff, and Lindsay Lohan. Each actress is following a star that Disney originally painted for them with throwaway movies like The Parent Trap (1998—Lindsey Lohan), The Princess Diaries (2001—with Anne Hathaway and Mandy Moore), and The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003—Hilary Duff). Mandy Moore looks best suited to break out of the Disney mediocrity machine first, based on her recent script choices of Saved! and John Turturro’s upcoming Romance and Cigarettes. That leaves Hathaway, Duff, and Lohan to battle it out for dramatic script choices that will deliver them into a cinematic womanhood wrought with real problems of social responsibility and hard won accomplishments in the face of personal obstacles. In terms of which of the three actresses wins the crown for Best Teen Drama Queen, that sugarcoated award goes to Anne Hathaway for carrying herself with dignity and integrity while elevating cartoon roles with charm and panache.
That brings us to the dregs of the Disney cutegirl counter where Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan continue to say yes to bland roles that feed their precocious egos, and fill their adolescent audience’s heads with silly ideas about their comportment in a world of soul crushing capitalism. When Sam Montgomery (Duff) corresponds by blind e-mail with a mysterious boy she hopes to meet and mate with, we’re given a glimpse into a tortured poetic soul who is, in fact, Austin Ames the quarterback for the high school football team. Austin is busy dating an air-headed cheerleader with an unduly inflated arrogance that she uses to divert attention from a scar between her eyes. Because Austin is unable to take corrective action by addressing the scar, or its ramifications on his girlfriend’s insufferable behavior, he dooms himself to roam the Internet in search of another girl. Austin’s inability to take responsibility in his personal relationships is matched by Sam’s passive aggressive nature that insists on waiting for an avoidable crisis that will incite her to speak her mind. However, you can’t really apply this kind of adult logic to this kind of movie, and that really is the whole point.

MOVIECAPSULES preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? RIDING GIANTS - (PG13) - Documentary - The complete breakdown on the hows, whys and all-important whos of big wave surfing—guys like Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton who’ve made names for themselves towing behind jet skis into monster waves at places like Mavericks in California and our own Peahi (aka Jaws). Helmed by Stacy Peralta of Dogtown and Z-Boys fame, the film has all the makings of a surf classic. SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! SLEEPOVER - (PG) - Comedy - Oh My God, these four teenage girls are, like, so happy to be out of the eighth grade that they have a slumber party that is so cool but then it gets even better, you see, when they start competing against their school’s popular girls in an all-night scavenger hunt, forcing them to borrow Julie’s dad’s car and sneak into these clubs and even kiss their first boys, all without Julie’s mom finding out. SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). THE TERMINAL - (PG13) - Drama - Steven Spielberg directs Tom Hanks as some Eastern European guy who gets stranded in an airport terminal because his country ceases to exist. It’s a light-hearted film, which is odd considering it’s based on a true story about a guy who ended up killing himself because he couldn’t take spending weeks and weeks in a sterile prison listening to the words “United Flight 167 now boarding at Gate 32. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned.

Now Showing
Love Me If You Dare 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater The #1 Smash Hit from France that's been described as "Better than sex, better than love, better than life itself?" Mmmm, a tall order, but see for yourself in this enigmatic conclusion to this eccentric romantic dramedy that has been favorably compared to the sensational Academy Award-nominated Amelie, which has left its recent Celestial Cinema audience buzzing and scratching their heads. So... if you love films that leave you wondering what the final fate of its key characters is, this dazzling black comedy about life-long love and how the intense fantasies of childhood haunt us, tempt us and call to us, even in our adult years, is for you. In French with English subtitles. Rated R. 96 min.
New This Week A CINDERELLA STORY - PG - Teen/Romantic Comedy - Another fable-filled fantasy about a super cute and really nice high school chick (Hilary Duff) who is tortured by her tacky stepmom and catty, low-self-esteem-compensating, jealous stepsisters, while she covets her online Prince Charming, the popular quarterback with the secret sensitive side. Will he find the cell phone she left behind just before the clock strikes midnight? See Film Critique. I ROBOT - PG-13 - Science Fiction/Adventure This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. Based on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s classic collection of short stories of the same name, the movie follows Smith’s detective character as he tries to prove a robot violated its
ANCHORMAN - (PG) - Comedy - The pretty much always funny Will Ferrell plays Ron Burgandy, a knownothing know-it-all TV news anchorman in San Diego who’s all comfy in his burgundy blazer and full-on 1970s moustache until a new, intelligent reporter— played by the lovely and talented Christina Applegate (Kelly Bundy, to you Married with Children fans)— threatens to take his job AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - (PG) Action/Adventure - This Jules Verne classic stars Jackie Chan—Jackie Chan!—as Passepartout, the Chinese thief and Steve Coogan as British adventurer Phileas Fogg. Considering that Chan does a lot of his trademark kicking and jumping and kicking while in the act of jumping, we’re guessing the studio strayed a bit from Verne’s original storyline. DODGEBALL (PG13) - Ben Stiller (Zoolander) is the hilarious head of a big fitness palace that threatens to overtake a small local gym. Vince Vaughn (Swingers) leads a group of social misfits to battle the big evil corporate of narcissism in an epic game of, well, Dodgeball. FAHRENHEIT 9/11 - (R) - Documentary - This is the one that has the right-wing neoconservative War on Terror types screaming. What, they can dish it out but not take it? Cowards. Anyway, Michael Moore—who in the past has brilliantly skewered Corporate America (Roger and Me) and the NRA (Bowling for Columbine)— shines a light on all the economic and political connections between the Bush and bin Laden clans. GARFIELD - (PG) - Comedy - Movie version of the comic strip that follows the adventures of a sleepy, orange, fat cat that eats a lot of lasagna and cracks wise (of course) to his owner Jon, who I think can’t really hear him because cats don’t really talk so well. Anyway, they go see beautiful (of course) veterinarian Liz Wilson and get a new friend—an utterly mindless yet thoroughly loveable (of course) dog named Odie HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Third in the Harry Potter dynasty of children’s books, this storyline evolves around Harry’s inability to tame the beast within him, as he goes on the run, not realizing that he is also being chased by a renegade wizard played by sexy master villain Gary Oldman (hello? Bram Stoker’s Dracula?). KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. Do you believe in destiny? I saw you on Tuesday, March 22 between 1-2 pm at Starbucks in Kihei. Your crystal blue eyes, as blue as the deep blue sea, looked into mine piercing my soul and for the first time in my life I felt pure love. Your smile was as bright as the sun and I knew that we had known each other for time immortal. You have danced in my dreams ever since. I must find you and make my dreams a reality for you are as real as a beautiful Hawaiian flower. Life goes around like a carnival and I’m sure our lives are meant to cross. I know if I am patient I will find you and learn the meaning of your visits in my nightly dreams. The Ferris Wheel of life is bringing me back to Maui again on July 13th through the 20th in hopes of finding you. I will be at Starbucks daily at or about the same time I saw you there my last visit. You are my destiny!

about your parents and your current living situation. Learn to be more comfortable. Practice deep breathing and deep relaxation. The new moon is asking you to be a couch potato. TAURUS: In your case, the couch potato image has to go. Move with ease through neighborhood social circles. Do what you can to become familiar with the local terrain. The new moon helps you make friends. Make art with a message. GEMINI: The best part of breaking up is making up. You may experience roller coaster rides of love that’s here, then there, and then back for more. The new moon is good for changing your diet or for purchasing a material object of great value. CANCER: You’re learning to make the best of a heavy situation. Personal growth occasionally translates into economic growth. It’s hard to say whether or you’ll be looking for antiques, or you’ll be entering a pie-eating contest. The new moon is in Cancer. LEO: You’re getting tired of playing subservient caretaker. You have one more week to remain a Peter Parker before you can emerge as a Spider-person. The new moon in Cancer helps you to shed old skin. Don’t despair; slow change is coming. VIRGO: You wouldn’t know good luck if it bit you on the bum. Yet somehow the universe wants to do you a favor this week. Amidst hostility and confusion, you can create peace. The new moon gives you a greater sense of freedom while helping you make alliances. LIBRA: Are you tired of getting kicked around? Well, now’s your chance to kick someone else around. Believe it or not, you’re being perceived as the boss. The new moon challenges your ability to bring real justice at work amidst an emotional environment. SCORPIO: This is a perfect week to be on a game show, join the circus, or become famous for some exotic experience. The new moon inspires vacations, roads less traveled and higher education. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. SAGITTARIUS: Your incubation period is almost over. Soon you’ll be pecking at your shell getting ready to be hatched. The new moon features the joys and pains of birth and death, loans and paybacks. Stay true to your promises. CAPRICORN: The deal is about to go down. This is the last good week for finalizing the details. You appear to be trying to heat up a relationship beyond the world of cool, calm and collective. The new moon provides the perfect mood for romance and harmony. AQUARIUS: Use your own psychic pressure cooker to energize another area of your life. It’s difficult to avoid arguing with people. We all know that you’re different. The new moon allows you to address old health issues and to help others at the same time. PISCES: Rumor has it that you’re having just too good of a time. Basically you’ve been energized. It’s either that or you’re in a perpetual state of shock. The new moon leaks out a little more of the elixir of playfulness, creativity and love affairs.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
UpWest Arts & Hawaii Public Radio present...
Flirting with disaster On Friday, at the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, I met a fan. Sort of. “Oh! You’re Holoholo Girl! Yeah, I read your column,” she said, not really smiling. “It’s funny sometimes…” “Uh, thanks,” I said. “But boy, you sure drink a lot!” she went on. “You must have a headache every day! I couldn’t do that!” “Um, I really don’t drink that much,” I mumbled. She ignored me. “Yeah, every column is like, ‘I went here, I drank this, I went there, I drank that.’ I mean, you must be hung-over all the time!” she said. “It’s all an illusion,” I said, a little louder this time and trying to muster a smile. The whole thing disturbed me so much that I walked to the nearest beverage booth and asked for a double! Okay, not really. I was at a wine tasting, but you get the idea. Later that evening, I stopped by Compadres in Lahaina to see DJ Polliwog. The people there were happily dancing but I was feeling significantly less giddy so I went home for a quick attitude adjustment. When I biked back down to Hard Rock Café to see Gomega, I felt much better. Nothing like a manly Hawaiian boy singing Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” followed up by an alt-country rock Gourds version of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” Then I rode down to Paradice Bluz and met up with the lovely Heidi, who promptly made me drink something green. Since something green and wine don’t really go well together, I ditched it—and the girls—and went home. Of course, that was after Michelle amazed us all with some seriously impressive 1993 dance moves. The night before, Jen and I went to see the dress rehearsal of Maui OnStage’s Hair at the Iao Theater in Wailuku. It was an energetic production—we were duly impressed. But all that groovy song and dance—well, okay, it was the nudity and the patchouli—made us hungry so we went to Mañana Garage in Kahului. There the salsa music made us want to do some Latin dancing but apparently, salsa is not such a popular pastime on a Thursday in Kahului. Or Kihei. Or anywhere on Maui, for that matter. I mean, I’m sure we could have gotten someone over at the Hang Loose Lounge to engage in a little tango but that’s just scary. So we did the next best thing and went back to Lahaina, where we hopped on our cruisers and loudly sang Jack Wagner’s obnoxious “All I Need,” which segued nicely into a heartfelt “We Are the World,” on the way to Paradice Bluz. We talked about all the films Jen’s seen lately on TV that made her cry: Fame, No Looking Back, Father of the Bride. A musical, a comedy and a movie starring Jon Bon Jovi? What’s to cry about, Jen? Then again, that Bon Jovi song “Wanted Dead Or Alive” does bring a tear to the eye occasionally. Jen and I then discussed our recent disastrous experiences with inebriated late night telecommunication—i.e., Drunk Dialing. We agreed that somebody needs to come up with a cell phone breath-alyzer. Not a new concept, I know—we’ve all talked about it. But who’s holding out on this invention? Jen suggested rotary cell phones as another possible solution. “It would solve all our problems with D.D.,” she said. “I’d be so over it if I had to dial a nine!” On Sunday, I escaped the heat of the west side and drove to Paia, where Reeny—the SandBar’s head mistress of libations—admonished me for my dating practices. I sat stunned as she started listing prospects I thought I had been keeping covert. The lesson? Never underestimate your bartender—they know way too much. She suggested an intervention on some of these dates. “Maybe you can sit at the bar when I work and I’ll go down the line, pointing out ‘yes, yes, yes, maybe, no,’” she said. Reeny told me I needed to ditch my “type” and find myself a nice 18-year-old kid with braces. Then she told Kirsten and I how she coerced her husband, Mat, into their first date: Reeny and Mat used to work at a pizza joint together—she was his boss—and she threatened to make him wear a hairnet if he didn’t go out with her. It’s been sweet love ever since. Hmm… braces, blackmail and sexual harassment in the workplace results in one of the most long-term, happily married couples I know? Yeah, I’m sure I can learn from that. MTW
