LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR KNOWS A LITTLE TOO MUCH ABOUT HOSTESS BARS You have really gone around the bend(er) this time (“Bad Girls Do Dive Bars,” Feb. 19). Reviewing the hostess bars on Lower Main St. for drink prices and entertainment?? “There seems to be more of a female base” there? Really?

Just what do you think is included with the $200 non-alcoholic champagne?

Peanuts? So many questions, and so very rhetorical. If you don’t know what a hostess bar is, why don’t you ask somebody who’s been here longer than an hour and a half. Enjoy the karaoke, dufus.

WHO DOESN’T WANT MORE TIMESHARES? An important answer is missing from the full page ads and ongoing campaign in favor of Seibu Makena Resort’s rezoning requests: WHY? (“Makena Resort’s Record,” Feb. 19). We are under absolutely no obligation to add more land to the already considerable acreage rezoned for the benefit of Seibu.

Planning and zoning should respond to genuine needs of the community, not to opportunities for private profit making.

We have a fiscal obligation to be extremely careful about granting zoning entitlements to property owners. Entitlements can be sold with the property to new owners who have no interest in honoring promises made by the original owners to encourage rezoning by decision makers.

Worse, if the community later needs to restrict entitlements, we will likely face a lawsuit over property “taking” with a prospect of paying many times more than the cost of the land before the gift of rezoning.

Lately, it seems abundantly clear that a real need on Maui to be addressed by rezoning is affordable housing, NOT more timeshares, millionaire golf homes and coastal mansions.

Do we really need another exclusive, highend town out on a dead-end road, accessible through a temporarily widened highway with a history of serious congestion? Do we need expensive residential development around the last undeveloped, locally accessible beach area on the dry side? Do we need to take scarce water resources away from affordable homes and pipe it to the dry side for private gain?

Just whose needs is the county supposed to be looking out for?

My pops would make sure we left with everything we came with, including “opala” that wasn’t even ours, which back then might have been one or two bottles. Well, I am now my father’s age and I pull into the very fishing spot where Dad brought me. All the trash bags in my house would not have been enough to clean the mess! What are you people thinking? International Women’s Day How Maui can help in the struggle for women’s rights The seeds of world peace will blossom when governments everywhere protect and promote women’s rights. Annually, we water the soil for social change every March 8 with the International Women’s Day commemoration.

For all this nation’s talk of liberty and justice for all, there are many countries on Earth with better human rights records than the U.S. At the very least, we need to work here in Hawaii for recognition of women’s rights.

This, despite the fact that the advancement of women is acknowledged in the United Nations Charter preamble declaring faith “in fundamental human rights [and] in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small…”

On June 26, 1945, four women participated as equals in the UN Charter ceremony representing the Dominican Republic (Minerva Bernardino), Brazil (Bertha Lutz), China (Wu Yi-Fang) and the United States (Virginia C. Gildersleeve). At that time, just 31 nations in the world recognized the right of women to vote. Today, the majority of the states recognize this basic civil and political right to participation in government.

At the first session of the UN General Assembly in London in 1946, U.S. delegate Eleanor Roosevelt read a letter to the women of the world.

“We call on the governments of the world to encourage women everywhere to take a more active part in international and national affairs, and on women who are conscious of their opportunities to come forward and share in the work of peace and reconstruction,” she said.

This led to the creation of a UN Commission on the Status of Women.

“Some conditions can be changed by laws, education, and public opinion, and the time seems to have come for happy changes in conditions of women all over the world,” said Bodil Begrup, who chaired the Commission.

Since then, the Commission spearheaded the gender conversation in a global context discussing discrimination and addressing prevalent prejudice. The struggle of women to attain a better life enshrined women’s equality as a global principle.

In 1967, the Commission adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. The Commission also called for 1975 to be the International Women’s Year under the theme of “Equality, Development and Peace.”

The first global Women’s conference took place that year in Mexico. Over 133 governments adopted a World Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women along with the

unprecedented participation of 6,000 non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives.

Following Mexico, world conferences in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980, Nairobi, Kenya in 1985 and Beijing, China in 1995 paved the way for a global conscience on women’s rights. From the initial international intervention, the number of NGO representatives increased to over 30,000 at the most

recent summit.

The jewel in the crown of the Commission and the global conferences is the creation of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

It is known around the world as the International Bill of Rights for women providing the basis for constitutional developments in every nation for a better living standard and sense of justice for all.

CEDAW covers all discrimination including public life, education, employment, health, economic and social benefits, marriage and family. This international instrument required 16 years of efforts in which the United States spearheaded the surge for equality. On Dec. 18, 1979, at its 34th session, the UN General

Assembly opened CEDAW for signature. Less than two years later, CEDAW entered into force to secure full equality.

The Convention has been ratified by over 175 out of the 191 nations in the world. Over 90 percent of the world has recognized the equality of women submitting progress reports on the degree to which their domestic laws conform to the international standard of social justice.

But not the United States. It is time for us on Maui to pass a county council resolution and also to demand our elected officials to push for ratification with 67 votes in the U.S. Senate.

Perhaps we can all celebrate International Women’s Day by demanding that our elected officials once again make the U.S. a leader in the fight for human rights. MTW

MONDAY, FEB. 23 Three surveys cited by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau have confirmed that the State of Hawaii is, indeed, the “premier leisure destination” for “travelers.” That’s right—people who travel like to travel to Hawaii. “There’s no question that Hawaii is a ‘hot’ destination among travelers and much of the credit is due to the quality and diversity of vacation experiences that visitors enjoy when the come to the islands,” said Bureau president and CEO John Monahan in a press release. Of course, missing from all the congratulations is any quantifiable data concerning people who aren’t travelers. Where don’t they like to go?

Is it Hawaii? Oh please, please, be Hawaii…

Local American Idol hottie Camile Velasco hams it up at the International House of Pancakes, which was her place of employment until she became America’s Hottest Not-Yet-A-Superstar. According to today’s Maui News, she thanked us Hawaiian residents, saying she couldn’t have gotten her 2.7 million votes without them. Two-point-seven million votes?! The President doesn’t have that kind of power base!… U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawaii) just endorsed presidential candidate and fellow Senator John F. Kerry (Oh wow, his initials are JFK! He’s a shoe-in!), citing concern for veterans’ issues. “We have an inadequate system in this country for serving the citizens who served our country,” he said.

“We owe our veterans more than substandard care.” Oh yeah, that’s worth at least 2.7 million votes.

TUESDAY, FEB. 24 Hold that bandwagon, someone still wants to jump on! Barely 18 hours after Sen. Akaka gave Democratic presidential candidate the thumbs-up, which was only a few days after

fellow Senator Daniel Inouye endorsed Kerry.

Hawaii Congressman Ed Case decided to shove in, too. “I’ve concluded that of the remaining candidates, only John Kerry has that unique combination of background, experience, philosophy, credibility and leadership to successfully contest the general election and step immediately into the role of our President,” he said in an official John Kerry for President release… In case you’re wondering why local officials are stepping over each other trying to get close to Kerry, it might be because tonight is Caucus Night! You know, the night Hawaiian voters crowd into a few rooms around the state for about an hour and talk and dicker and argue and then through some mechanism not entirely understood by science emerge with a choice for the presidential nominee. Other states just have primary elections, where everyone—and by “everyone,” I mean “that tiny sliver of the general public that cares about electing officials”—votes for their candidate of choice. Oh wait, we have that, too, later in the year.

Federal marine officials told The Maui News that the seal, which may or may not be the same seal that used to beg for fish in Lahaina Harbor, could actually become violent if fed. But even if the seal remained happy-go-lucky, it still wasn’t a good idea to feed it because it could “decrease its ability to survive on its own.” In other words, we don’t want to be turning the monk seal into a kind of poodle of the sea—a loveable but rather pathetic creature that is both totally dependent on humans and totally lost in the wild… To stop the incessant crowding that’s making life hell for local fishermen, officials will now prevent tour boats from landing at Mala Wharf in Lahaina. No word yet if the ban

Sure, it starred George Clooney and that guy from Boogie Nights who nearly drowns during that chilling fishhook scene… Oh wait, here’s a fax from the state Department of Defense, Civil Defense Division. Says “high winds, heavy rains and possible thunderstorms” will hit this weekend. Also says people should think twice before going hiking because of flash floods. Guess that means no illegal naked bamboo forest commando hike this weekend… Today I actually learned something by reading the Maui Weekly. You see, when I first took a trip down to Wailea, I marveled at how much the place’s bright green grass, white stucco walls and

Spanish-tile roofs looked so little like the rest of the island, but so much like Southern California.

Specifically, I was amazed at how much the golf courses and condos resembled Irvine, a city so odorless and colorless it made a hospital look comfortable in comparison. Anyway, I just thought it was a coincidence until I read the Weekly’s fawning profile of planner Charlie Jencks—the “dreamer” who designed Wailea’s Grand Champions Golf and Tennis Village.

Seems Jencks spent six years before moving to Maui at the Irvine Company—aka, the most powerful force in Orange County since the early 1960s. Not only does the Company own tens of thousands of acres throughout the county, but it lavishes campaign contributions on the state’s most conservative Republicans. It’s almost enough to make me homesick…

A state Democratic Party official says they still haven’t finished counting the votes from Tuesday’s presidential caucus. As it stands, Kerry has 12 delegates and Kucinich has eight. “One vote may have shifted,” party spokesman Donald Koelper told the Associated Press.

Koelper added that if a vote shifted, it probably shifted in Kerry’s favor… Maui News city editor Edwin Tanji weighs in on whether consumer advocate Ralph Nader’s upstart independent presidential run will “spoil” the Democrat/Republican race. “Just as he continues to ignore the reality of the general apathy of American consumers over the decades,” wrote Tanji, “Nader persists in ignoring the reality of the American political system as established by the U.S. Constitution.” Tanji added that Nader was “naïve” to think he could take on the nation’s two-party system. That Tanji is correct doesn’t affect that fact that he misses a larger point—that our vaunted “system” is rigged to make sure candidates like Nader—who hold antiestablishment views—are marginalized as “spoilers” before they ever start their campaign. But an election system based on proportional representation—whereby parties pick up legislative seats based on their percentage of the vote— would go a long way to eliminate that profoundly anti-democratic defect. Of course, doing so would require amending the constitution, which seems to be all the rage right now anyway. MTW

ART COMES TO LIFE In a 1999 episode of TV’s The Simpsons, Homer became a temporary multibillionaire by accidentally inventing a “tomacco” plant that sprouted tobacco-bred tomatoes that were hopelessly addictive from even a single bite. Inspired (and hoping to draw attention to the show’s anti-smoking message), Rob Baur of Lake Oswego, Ore., tried to grow such a plant and has somewhat succeeded, though a forensic researcher believes that only the plant itself, and not the fruit, contains nicotine. In February, he announced that he would auction off the golf-ball-sized fruit.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT

Geologist David J. Siveter of Leicester University (England) wrote in the journal Science in December that he and his team had found a fossil 425 million years old that is probably the oldest record of an unambiguously male animal. They named the half-inch-long shellfish Colymbosathon ecplecticos, which they said means “swimmer with a large penis,” referring to its organ that is one-fifth of its body length.

(2) A Duke Medical Center study, announced in December, concluded that doses of nicotine might reduce age-associated memory impairment (“senior moments”), thus adding to the conditions (others: schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) that can benefit from nicotine.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY Even after it had learned that its chief technology officer’s claim of a college computer sciences degree was bogus, the Washington, D.C., Elections Board declined to fire her, reasoning that such a degree was not important to her job (January). And the D.C. Contract Appeals Board declined to suspend a paving firm that had pleaded guilty last year to bribing district officials, thus allowing it to resume normal contracting work (January). Miss Ke ala o ka malamalama Pageant 2004 A stunning, petite figure stands center stage in a full-length, sparkling pink, strapless gown. Her hair is upswept with chestnut ringlets framed by a cascade of orchids. A strand of glittering diamonds hangs from her neck. She opens her rouge-stained lips to sing—well, okay, lip synch—the diva-esque, Jennifer Holliday hit, “I’m Changing,” from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

The audience reacts approvingly with whoops, clapping, whistles and the occasional “Get it, girl!” After the deafening applause subsides, the pageant’s emcees, KPOA’s Morning Goddess Alaka’I Paleka and the

Maui AIDS Foundation’s director of prevention and education, Dean Wong, look duly impressed.

“That was beautiful,” said Paleka, the only verifiably biological woman performing on stage this evening. “I feel like such a boy.”

On March 6, the Foundation presented its annual Miss Ke ala o ka malamalama Pageant at the Iao Theater as a showcase for Maui’s most talented “gender illusionists”—or drag queens, as we say here in the states.

“You know why they’re called ‘drag queens’?” asked Paleka. “You should see how much makeup and accoutrements they like DRAG!” The event also serves as an entertaining

forum to educate the public about gender labels, AIDS awareness and sexually transmitted diseases. The winner of the pageant goes on to represent the Maui AIDS Foundation as a volunteer, organizing entertainment for upcoming events and fundraising. This particular event has sold out for the past three years, given its extraordinary talent and flair.

After an awe-inspiring opening number that featured Chacha Frenzi, who was Miss Ke 2002, Keoni & Co.’s award-winning hula halau Te Tiare Patitifa also gave a spectacular performance. The Master and “Goddess” of ceremonies then introduced each of the three contestants in their first division category, entitled “Hawaiian Tropics Runway.”

Against a backdrop of three enormous tropical flower arrangements, and an altar of golden trophies, diminutive Casey Carrington walked onto the stage in an aloha dress adorned with the design of breadfruit in red “to symbolize the AIDS awareness ribbon” and yellow “for the rays of the sun.” Holding a fresh flower lei, she stopped at the edge of the stage, smiled and waved, then turned to walk back.

It was exactly like Miss America, but with more duct tape.

Then the second contestant, the large and lovely Ariana Avante’, stepped out from behind the curtain in a gold sequined dress and six-foot headdress, posing with some difficulty but smiling nonetheless as she managed gracefully to duck back behind the stage.

“Our competition is steep tonight,” said Wong.

“Well, you know I do have a lot of affection for the big ones,” said Paleka. “It takes a lot of cajones to come out with the skinny bitches.”

“It’s all about duct tape backstage!” she said. Then Wong announced the third and final competitor, Destiny’s Passion.

She appeared in full Tahitian regalia with coconut shell bra, deep violet and bright yellow feathers, and natural grass skirt. As she exited,

the remaining hula dancers of Te Tiare Patitifa rose to follow her out amidst the last drumbeats.

“So I was watching the Discovery Channel,” said Wong, “and no, I wasn’t looking for a transsexual operation! How many of you knew there were gay dinosaurs?”

After some murmuring and giggles, Wong said, “Yeah, there’s mega-sore-ass and the lesbian dinosaur, licka-lotta-puss!”

The Talent Showcase division category was then introduced as a salute to Broadway, with Casey Carrington leading the way in a well-choreographed number called “Bring on the Men!” As the song ended a cell phone rang in the audience.

“Must be a doctor,” said Wong, graciously.

“Oh sure,” said Paleka. “Any proctologists in the house?”

Ariana Avante’ then began her musical dramatization of “I’m Everybody’s Girl” in a black dress and white, feather-trimmed shawl.

“I could never be a cowhand’s girl,” she lip synched. “Wanna know why? I just can’t keep my CALVES together!”

The night proceeded with more performances by Bette & The Boys, a surprise performance

by April Foo, a lively Hookers of 42nd Street division category and last year’s winner, Sheila Blidge, in her farewell song and walk down the runway to “Kiss the Day Goodbye.”

When it came time to announce the evening’s winner and runners-up, Wong and Paleka expressed their gratitude and admiration for everyone involved, especially the contestants.

“I’m so gonna borrow those gold shoes, you don’t even know,” said Paleka to Ariana Avante’.

“And remember, the first runner up is so important. You know, in case the winner gets hapai!”

The first set, Anastasia belted out groovy covers of the Beatles‚ “Come Together,” Natalie Merchant’s “Carnival” and the Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine (When She’s Gone).” Gilliam’s deep, soulful voice—reminiscent of Lydia Pense of the ‘70s funk phenom Cold Blood, with a little Nina Simone undercurrent—could move the most repressed white boy to shake it on the dance floor. But it’s their original material that reflects the band’s vast range and potential.

Nils and Anastasia began making music together in 2001, when mutual friends brought them together to jam. They clicked immediately.

“We wrote four or five of the songs on our new CD that very first day,” Gilliam told me during a break at their Hard Rock show, “since the first day we met, we’ve just been on fire!

Nils comes up with the basic structure, I get a feel for the mood and the melody, then we just write the story line around it. We really like to build our songs from the ground up.”

It’s this elemental, ground-up style that sets the Voodoo Suns apart from other R&B-influenced bands. An authenticity and confidence springs from Nils‚ appreciation of true guitar virtuosos like Hendrix and Michael Bloomfield and his amazing interpretive skills. He brings his well-honed style to a humble Maui venue and plays like it’s the Fillmore. Anastasia describes their process as “organic... we let things happen naturally, without pushing.” Songs like “Sunday A.M.” and “Wake Up Call” resonate with personal style and confessional depth.

Pu’unene Ave. in a state of reverie only Mana’o Radio can elicit. A gal with the sweetest intimation of southern twang was hosting a little southern roots show, spinning some fairly obscure Hillbilly hoe-down and Delta Blues joints.

How refreshing! A touch of American soul mid-Pacific.

The gal was Anastasia Gilliam, the lead singer of the infectiously soulful local band the Voodoo Suns. She ended the radio segment with one of her band’s own recordings—a noholds-barred cover of the Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.”

I was hooked. This was something to look into. This woman could sing. In fact, the Voodoo Suns may just be the hottest thing to hit Maui since Madame Pele graced us with her presence.

I caught up with the Voodoo Suns at Hard Rock in Lahaina. Anastasia and lead-guitarist Nils Rosenblad were really excited; they’d just added two new band members and were recording a new CD called Songs from the Haleakala Kitchen. It was a debut of sorts: drummer Bob Jones and bass player Rebecca Young would take the stage as Suns for the first time and the band would play their entire upcoming album of original material straight through.

I have to admit I was a little tired.

Recovering from a nasty stomach flu, and way out of the habit of staying out past midnight, I willed myself to sit upright on the barstool.

Then Nils started playing some blues-y, Hendrix-y licks and the whole place caught fire. Like good gris-gris with a sazerac-chaser the Voodoo Sons lent me their mojo for a spell.

she could talk. Her mother claims she was creating melodies in the crib, but Gilliam remembers most vividly dancing on the kitchen table, singing along with Elvis records when she was a mere seven years old.

“I grew up in a very, very poor family in Arkansas,” she said. “I really wanted a piano, but when I found out we couldn’t afford it, I thought... I don’t need to pay for my voice.”

That’s when she began “vocal training” with the help of her disc-jockey father’s record collection.

“I was consciously honing for this career,” she said. “I remember sitting in the car staring into oncoming headlights practicing‚ being onstage.” She left Arkansas in 1984 for the bright lights of L.A. There she married a fellow musician and hooked up with a cover band. After her marriage broke up, she visited Maui for the first time to visit a guitarist friend who’d moved here.

“As soon as I got off the plane, I knew I was supposed to be here. I fell in love with it and thought I’d make a go of it.” Gilliam performed with alternative band The Missionaries for several years, but feels the Voodoo Suns is the manifestation of her artistic destiny.

“I wanted to combine the funky grooves and soulful vocals that the live Motown sound was all about, along with the mojo spirit of my Hillbilly-Blues roots, but I was never able to capture that kind of feel,” Gilliam said. “After

I crossed paths with Nils, I knew we’d be able to write the kind of music I’d always heard in my head.”

Nils Rosenblad’s musical epiphany came when he was nine years old. A hippy photographer from the Princeton University commune next door invited young Rosenblad to a Jimi Hendrix show. Nils’ neighbor wanted a kid to sit on his shoulders—above the crowd—and capture unobscured shots of Hendrix. He still treasures a vivid back-and-white photograph of his first groovy catalyst, one that he captured as an impressionable nine-year-old atop some Princeton student’s shoulders. Rosenblad started playing guitar soon after. At the ripe-old-age of 14, after his family moved from Princeton to the Jersey Shore, he began jamming with blues bands at a gritty bar called Mr. J’s.

“It wasn’t that far from scenes in The Blues Brothers,” he said. During his years as an engineering student at Pratt University, Rosenblad

picked up studio work in New York City and has been working steadily as both a musician and designer. He spent many years on Maui as the chief designer and sail maker for Neilpryde, the legendary windsurfing company, while playing with popular bands Kona Storm and The Nancy’s. Rosenblad decided to put his design career on the back burner to devote full attention to the Voodoo Suns.

The recent addition of drummer Bob Jones and bassist Rebecca Young marks an important turning point for the band. As the Voodoo Suns anticipate the release of their first full-length CD, they feel a new momentum and commitment.

“We got very lucky with Bob and Rebecca,” said Rosenblad. “They are both excellent players who believe in the material and the project.

Music is an all or nothing proposition.

Anything less than 100 percent is not going to cut it. We are really excited.”

“We weren’t actively seeking a new rhythm section, but Bob and Rebecca fell into our little puzzle like they’d been cut from it all along,” said Gilliam.

The two musicians met Bob Jones at a Mana’o Radio jam session. When Rosenblad discovered Jones had played with Mike Bloomfield for years, he “totally freaked out just because Bob was on all these records with my childhood hero.” Jones played with Bloomfield for 10 years and was featured on an album Rosenblad said he “wore the grooves out of growing up.”

Jones is a Hawaii native who grew up on Oahu. His musical career took off when he moved to the Bay Area in the 1970s and started playing with Bloomfield. He moved back to Maui a few years back to help restore his grandfather’s home in Wailuku and started his own band, Bob Jones and Hard Drive.

When Rosenblad asked Jones to become a permanent member of the Voodoo Suns, he was a bit reluctant to dismantle Hard Drive. But when Rosenblad played him some of their recent demo tracks, Jones was taken in immediately.

“It’s so cutting edge, so promising,” he said. “I just knew it was going to be a magical collaboration.”

Rebecca Young, the band’s final new member, only moved to Maui last July. But she’s already impressing audiences with her cool stage vibe. Rosenblad said she brings a “gentleness to the band... that really showcases Anastasia’s voice.”

Rosenblad’s cousin first saw Young jamming with several other musicians during intermission at the Maui Film Festival, and passed her name on to him. The connection happened immediately. Gilliam said she’s just happy to have another woman to perform with.

“At first I wasn’t sure about having another woman in the band because I’m so used to the dynamics of working only with men,” she said.

“But as soon as I met her, I knew this was going to be good!”

And good it is. If Songs from the Haleakala Kitchen can capture even half of the low-down funky energy the band conjures up live, our hometown Suns may be roaming the world, headlining at the Fillmore themselves in the very near future. Until then, they’ll continue lighting up the Maui music scene, playing fairly regularly at venues around the island while they put the finishing touches on the album.

“I really believe Maui could be the Nashville of the Pacific Rim,” said Rosenblad. “The Hawaiian culture has so much music and soul, and there is a tremendous amount of local talent, from all the great Hawaiian players who grew up here to the amazing musicians—both famous and obscure— who were drawn here by the vibe and beauty of the place. And we have the exposure—a million plus visitors from all over the planet every year.

Somebody just needs to light the fuse.”

Famished and stranded one afternoon in Makawao, I walked into Casanova’s small café for a little diversion and a quick bite, but ended up getting a bit more than that.

While perusing three large menus on the wall of the deli, two gentlemen at a nearby table talked with a female café worker about how we only use 97 percent of our brain.

“Why only 97 percent?” she asked.

“It’s this field of electromagnetic stuff we don’t know is there,” said one guy.

“We just don’t know how to use it.”

“It’s ee-voh-loo-shun, darling!” said the other. “Come back in 10 years and we’ll be using five percent of our brains.”

Casanova Italian Deli features a full espresso bar, along with fresh baked pastries, bagels and brownies, an extensive assortment of sandwiches and salads, lasagna, quiche and their signature authentic pizza. They also have a deli case of yummies like Guava Cheesecake, Mixed Berry and Macadamia Nut Pies, Tiramisu and a scrumptious-looking Double Chocolate Fudge Cake.

As I decided between the Paris, which is Brie and marinated artichoke hearts ($4.95) on a French baguette or the Kula Primavera—goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, grilled zucchini, eggplant and pesto sauce ($6.95)—on fresh focaccia, the two men resumed their conversation.

“The Academy Awards? That’s when all the mediocre actors in the world will pat themselves on the back,” said one.

“If I have to see another Sandra Bullock movie, I’m going to have to commit suicide,” said his friend. “Renee Zellweger is a good actress but there aren’t many.”

That led to discussion of Nicole Kidman and Australians and, naturally, Russell Crowe, who the gentlemen concluded as being “Awful! Awful!”

“He’s never been in character,” one said. “He’s just a brooder—he’s just an alcoholic.”

“He’s a brooding alcoholic!” said the other. “Have you seen A Beautiful Mind?”

“Awful!”

“Gladiator?”

“Awful! Joaquin Phoenix?”

“Awful! Trash!”

“Dustin Hoffman—now there’s a good actor.”

“How do you rate Julia Roberts?”

“Terrible! Awful!”

The daytime café is neither terrible nor awful, but serves breakfast every morning until 11:30, including items like Malted Belgian Waffle or CinnamonRaisin French Toast ($4.25) or the

ee-voh-loo-shun Upcountry, with scrambled eggs, bacon, French fries and buttermilk biscuit ($5.95).

They also offer several omelet combinations— or make your own!—like mozzarella and basil ($5.95) or smoked salmon, sour cream and green onions ($6.25).

Later another customer walked in and quickly engaged himself in the now-heated discussion of current films. This, inevitably, turned to the controversial opening of The Passion of the Christ.

“Aw, Jesus was all right,” said one guy. “He loved his mom and turned water into wine!”

I finally made my selection as the gentlemen were leaving and caught the tail end of one of their brief dissertations on the merits of Rocky & Bullwinkle.

“Hey! What’s Rocky’s middle name?” one gentleman quizzed his companion.

That would be Jet, as in Rocket Jet Squirrel.

“Learn something new every day!” he said.

So not only can you chow down a gourmet sandwich, sip on an espresso and wax philosophic on everything from evolution to Rocky & Bullwinkle, but you can also finally discover what heaven and hell are all about just by looking upon a deli wall at the infamous Casanova motto: “Heaven is where the police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French and it is all organized by the Swiss. Hell is where the police are German, the chefs British, the mechanics French, the lovers Swiss, and it is all organized by the Italians.”

At least, that’s what the $14 t-shirt says.

‘A Lot Of Fish This Year’ Art Maui at the MACC On a bright hot Tuesday, artists in straw hats and sunglasses lined up loosely outside of the Schaefer International Gallery.

Each carefully carried a bulky piece of artwork—a sculpture, a woodcarving, a painting hiding beneath a brown paper bag—as if it were their baby. They were there to enter the 2004 Art Maui juried exhibition, where for the first time their artwork will be judged and hopefully displayed for the public beginning on March 7.

“Artists get scared to death to bring their pieces in,” said Jane Thompson, one

of the organizers. “It is very emotional and very gutsy to leave them for the world to see.

It’s like looking into people’s souls.”

Thompson, who has been involved in Art Maui for the past 25 years, inspects the rows of received artwork, making sure each is stamped with a letter or number. Inside the gallery, artwork of all sizes and shapes lines the walls—from paintings to photographs, blown glass to blocks of cement.

“We accept all kinds of media—oil, watercolor, jewelry, wood carvings, you name it,” she said. “The only requirement is that it must be a piece completed within the last two years, and never before displayed for the public.”

Entered artwork ranges from the realistic to the abstract to the absurd. Shields of stained glass shimmer behind drawings of butterflies and mermaids. Photographs of nudes lie next to portraits of Willie Nelson.

“We’ve got a lot of fish this year,” Thompson said as she walked through the gallery.

Art Maui began in 1978 when a group of professional artists decided to hold the first juried art show on the island. Since then, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has purchased art from the show to promote Maui artists around the state. A small group of local collectors also makes purchases each year.

Approximately 5,000 people will come through the gallery to see the show’s 100 pieces—whittled down from a group of 700 to 800 works.

“We get an incredible amount of good art,” said volunteer and artist Ellen Levinsky.

“Much of it doesn’t get into the show simply because of space limitation. That doesn’t mean the work itself isn’t good.”

Judging this year’s exhibit will be juror George Ellis, art student, educator and formerly Director of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. In order to choose what artwork will be featured in the show, Ellis is shown each piece individually, in order to see it by itself as opposed to next to the other pieces. “I hope my choices will reflect the extraordinary talent of Maui’s artists, who make all our lives richer and more meaningful,” he said.

There are quite a few new artists this year, said Levinsky. “We usually have a lot of commercial artists submit. This year, we have many who are prominent in the community as well as those who have never shown their art to the public.”

One of those new artists is Heig Beck, who is submitting a photograph for the first time.

“Last year when I came to the show, I talked to a photographer and gained my courage to enter,” she said, holding a framed photo she calls “Autumn Blossom.” “I didn’t decide to submit until one week ago, when I enlarged and framed one of my favorite photos.”

Other artists have submitted time and time again, even if their artwork hasn’t been chosen.

“It is a very reputable and valid way of displaying your work, getting your name known around the island,” said Lynne Garzino, President of the Kihei Arts Council, shifting her abstract oil painting in her arms. “That’s what keeps me coming back. It’s just a few people’s opinions, and there’s always a market for art. Muscle Car Movie Stiller and Wilson go back in time Through-the-floor-funny update on the popular ‘70s TV show infuses cheesy disco music with witty comic surprises as undercover cops Ben Stiller (Starsky) and Owen Wilson (Hutch) go after their local cocaine kingpin (Reese Feldman) Vince Vaughn (Swingers). Stiller and Wilson are far less serious than their television role models (Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul) but still drive the hell out of the souped-up Ford Gran Torino muscle car that boosted the show’s visual appeal.

Starsky & Hutch

★★★★★ Snoop Dogg revises the role of Huggy Bear (originally played by Antonio Fargas) to audience delight, and Will Ferrell elicits laughs as a prisoner with a penchant for odd visual arousal. Set in a fictional town called Bay City, the movie makes great physical use of its cast and breaks comic convention at several turns.

Better than the Charlie’s Angels movies for its cohesive tone, Starsky & Hutch is a bawdy and enjoyable ride.

Unfortunately, if you’re seen the overexposing trailer for Starsky & Hutch, then some of the film’s best jokes will be spoiled. But if you’re going into the movie cold, you’ll have the pleasure of being surprised by some perfectly set up comic gags that hinge on Owen Wilson’s and Ben Stiller’s jittery alliance of straight man/funny man routines.

Stiller’s Starsky is a tightly wound undercover cop who takes his job and driving way too seriously while Wilson’s Hutch is a late-sleeping skirt chaser with little more on his mind than having a good time all of the time.

The duo’s unpredictable camaraderie sometimes slips into naive homoerotic territory as when the two cops wear hand towels around their waists while shaving side by side in their precinct locker room. This comic thread finds its zenith when Starsky mistakenly takes a large dose of odorless cocaine and enters a madcap disco contest that tests all sorts of diverting boundaries. Stiller (Zoolander) exploits the opportunity to push his talent for physical comedy to its utmost while Hutch and their dates (Amy Smart and Carmen Electra) look on in disbelief.

Screenwriter Scot Armstrong (Road Trip and Old School) invents a new variety of comic surprise by pulling back when you expect him to go for the kill, but going over-the-top in creative scenes that bespeak more subtext than you

Snoop Huggy Hugg expect. The film’s neutered violence reflects the coded mores of ‘70s television with a dose of Pink Panther infused crack-up added to extend the energy of the scenes. Comic allusions from Peter Fonda’s Easy Rider put Starsky and Hutch in a motorcycle bar where their ill fitting disguises set off a fistfight that confirms their ass-kicking status even if their undercover shtick is far less convincing.

It’s this brand of innocent foolishness that director Todd Phillips (also Old School) taps to simultaneously up the stakes on comedy and action over the course of the movie. The protocol casting of Vince Vaughn as the lubricated family man/drug lord works well because of Vaughn’s genuinely intoxicated take on his volatile character. Snoop Dogg hits another movie homerun with his evenhanded take on Huggy Bear as a sleek dude with more trust in his ‘70s hairdo than Peter Jackson had in winning an Oscar this year. Rated PG-13 97 mins. MTW

The Wasteland Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center, Room 102-3 George W. Bush and his oilmen cronies are fond of referring to the Arctic Wildlife Refuge as a “wasteland,” in hopes of softening the widespread opposition to the administration’s plans to drain the place of its precious black gold.

But photographer Subhankar Banerjee knows differently. He and his guide Robert Thompson spent two years traveling 4,000 miles across the refuge.

They came back with incredible photos of the landscape’s beauty. On Thursday, Banerjee and Thompson will show some of their photos and talk of their experiences in the wild Alaskan backcountry. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

You Say It’s Your Birthday The celebration began innocently enough at 11:30 p.m. Monday. Jen, Rachel and I went to the Breakwater in Lahaina to start it off. Jen had given me a beautiful black silk cashmere poncho for my birthday that she said enabled me to change my identity at any time. And so it was that I became Veronica, the depressed millionairess turning 28, in search of a lap dance.

When we walked in, AC/DC’s “Back in Black” was playing and we decided that it would be my theme song for the evening. The next song, the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated,” was so definitely Jen’s. I demanded that she temporarily give up her Bushmills and water for a Mind Eraser with me. She chose both.

Sonja, Kim and Rainbow met up with us as we were skipping off down the street to Moose McGillycuddy’s. At Moose’s, Kim requested a bunch of songs from the DJ, telling him it was for my birthday.

“Happy birthday, Kim!” announced the DJ. The girls giggled and mocked Kim for trying to scene steal MY birthday, when to my horror, several other people at the bar called out that it was also THEIR birthdays. What nerve.

Feeling not so very special anymore, I decided to leave Moose’s—after another Mind Eraser, mind you—and go to the one place in the world where everybody knows my name and they’re always glad I came… but absolutely the last place I would want to get a lap dance. That’s right, the Sly Mongoose.

Apparently overcome with an ill-fated sense of motivation, I signed myself up for some rigorous personal training with Touché, to commence the following morning. I mean, what better way to cure a hangover than with 50 pushups, 200 stomach exercises, and a perky five-mile run?

Jen dropped Sonja, Rachel and myself off at Pancho & Lefty’s so we could have last call with Johnny. Then we walked the long block to our house, stopping for a moment to be a little drunk and disorderly in public by doing an impromptu photo session using the short yellow school bus in the parking lot as a prop.

Unfortunately, the next day at work is a bit of a blur, for my identity-changing poncho seemed to have lost its special powers in making me suddenly sober and productive. Ah, but the girls saved me once again.

“You eat yet?” asked Jen over the phone.

“Wannacheeseburger,” I mumbled unapologetically, with my head under the desk, after my office mates cheerily sang my birthday song to me.

And so she and Rachel came into the office, carting six cheeseburgers, three Quarter Pounders with cheese, a Big Mac, a nine-piece Chicken McNuggets, a Filet of Fish, a 3 Musketeers bar, a bag of Skittles and an Odwalla B Monster juice—you know, to be healthy.

After lunch, the six of us girls—BJ, Kim, Sonja, Jen, Rachel and I—went to Gaby’s Pizzzeria & Deli to do a couple more birthday shots. Then my mother called to tell me how many hours of labor she endured for me so many years ago and I went back to work to write THIS. Can you tell?

In the last hour of the celebration, BJ and I went back to the Goose to be showered with wooden nickels from Vinnie and Ryan. Michelle admired my pancho and we decided that I would now be Rebecca, a retired flamenco dancer from Reno.

We toasted with Jaxon and Vinnie, cackled with Pam and Sonja, then the bar became inundated with a crowd of “20-something assholes” and one guy named Darren with triple neck piercings who was celebrating his 26th birthday.

Actually, they were all very nice except for the part about them trying to infiltrate my damn birthday AGAIN.
