WHY WE HAVE INTERNS Dear Mr. Anonymous: I would just like to point out a few ways that your July 8 letter affected me. First, before reading your letter I had not read the article about a man having sex with his girlfriend’s dog (News of the Weird, June 3). I have now, however, so therefore you have defeated your purpose by drawing attention to that which you say is sexual perversion and pornography. Second, the article wasn’t all that bad. Third, I found your letter to be much more offensive than the eight lines of the News of the Weird item. Your use of foul language and grotesque imagery was much more pornographic than the article itself. It has made me ashamed for the pure Hawaiians you so casually mention. Finally, I am a 17-year-old girl, and you and your letter have officially made me sick. -Maui Time intern Kellie Holliday, Lahaina

RELATIVELY? I just want to thank you. I go through your paper and there are some articles I really like, except on the political side. I tend to, when I walk by the paper, I tend to view it as propaganda. Now, what do I mean by that? I mean simply that a one-sided view—someone promoting a one-sided view. And I’d prefer when I pick up a paper to see a point and a counter-point. And that way I tend to trust it more. Because I know that a person’s bias isn’t pushing this particular agenda. So I just hope you start to lean towards that and to not be afraid of it. And if you do that it’ll help me trust your paper more and rely on your paper more. So I thank you for being part of our free press and for presenting what I think is a relatively good paper, except on the political side and some of the other issues that are in them. Do not be afraid to put a counter-point in there. -Doug Johnson, via voicemail

sides” to every story is ridiculous. Does a piece on horrors of the Holocaust require a “counterpoint” showing all the “good” the Nazis did in Germany? But I am hearing your charges of bias. We at Maui Time take fairness very seriously, though I have noticed an ideological slide. But have no fear—from now on, I’ll make sure the paper moves left to compensate.

THE TEFLON STORY Who is Jim Washburn, and why is he saying these terrible things about the late Ronald Reagan (“The Real Reagan,” June 10)? Well, no matter. The important thing is that Washburn has written the most succinct, honest piece about the Teflon president I’ve ever seen, before or after his recent death. Washburn was able to recall and cite all the reasons we are stuck with Shrub, the Reagan wannabe. One of our greatest presidents? No, Reagan will go down in history as the man who began this nation’s slide down the slippery slope toward fascism (see Sinclair Lewis’ 1938 book It Can’t Happen Here). If journalism is instant history, Jim Washburn is America’s historian. Thank you for reprinting his story from Orange County Weekly. All Americans—in fact, everyone— should read it. I’m just glad I was in Maui when you folks published it. -Kay Lockridge, Santa Fe, New Mexico

This is to the jacked-up losers who stole my slippers while I was surfing. Three pairs now you jerks have taken! This has got to stop! You probably snatched them because they were nice, $20 slippers, but didn’t it bother you that they were also drenched in my disgusting foot juice? That is so not cool I don’t even know where to begin. The first two times after the crime I had to walk a long way on really hot cement in just my bare feet. That just added insult to injury. I’d had enough the third time it happened, and just stole someone else’s slippers so I wouldn’t have to walk back on the hot cement. Now I’ve become as bad as you! I’m a thief and it’s all your fault! Thief.

Ralph Nader descends on Maui The reporters and photographers stood around, stunned. So he said it again. “You know Rush Limbaugh makes $20 million a year,” he said. “He’s also a coward. He screens his calls. I challenged him to a debate. Did you ever see his TV show with the audience? Not one question was allowed.” Welcome to Ralph Nader’s latest press conference. Wearing a dark suit and a purple lei, Nader sat alone at a meeting table in Room 222 of Suite 110 in the imposing black office building at 535 Lipoa Parkway in Kihei. Against the wall stood assorted newspaper reporters, photographers and local activists. A policy magazine was opened in front of the former consumer advocate who made a name for himself 40 years ago denouncing the Corvair, but Nader rarely acknowledged it. The location for the July 18, 11 a.m. press conference was picked because former boxer and current Maui County Council candidate Johnny “Bang Bang” Jackson—who organized Nader’s firstever visit to Maui—has an office there. But it was an ironic place for Nader to give his standard denunciation of the militaryindustrial complex and corporate welfare: the building also houses offices for Lockheed, Boeing, Textron Systems Corp.—which is designing laser sensors for the U.S. Air Force—and the U.S. Navy’s Science and Technology department. As usual, Nader spoke without notes. He doesn’t really make speeches—he strings together general quotes and statistics that ridicule the military and corporate power centers that run American politics today: “The take-home pay of American workers is the lowest it’s been since 1929. “Half of democracy is just showing up. “The only message politicians understand is to have their votes denied. “The Democrats are not capable of internal reform.” Nader advocated a total military pullout of Iraq within six months to “take away the rationale for the insurgency.” But he also talked about Hawaii, pointing out the island’s “increasing dependence on the Mainland” for crops that could be easily and nutritiously grown here.

versial 2000 elections. “Six million people did not have their votes properly counted in 2000,” he said. Then he said the number of Democrats that deserted to Bush was ten times than those that went to him. Later, someone asked Nader how his Maui experience was going. “It’s been an hour and a half, he said to laughs. “If I stay more than three days, I’ll never get back to Washington.” Just outside Suite 110, some private photographers arrived at their office to find a few dozen people milling about, waiting to shell out a $75 “donation” so Nader would autograph copies of his new book Crashing the Party. One photographer brought his little daughter up to the crowd. “Daddy, Daddy, who’s going to be here?” she asked him excitedly. “A man who’s running for President of the United States,” he told her. “Who is it?” she asked, even more excited. “Who is it?” “Ralph Nader.” “What’s a Ralph Nader?”

MTW

At one point, Nader said he dreamed of a day when the number of Americans who watch Congress at least equals the number which watches birds. “It’s nice to watch birds,” he said, “but Congress takes 21 percent of your income and can send you off to war.” By pushing an “Anyone but Bush” campaign, Nader said “millions of Democrats are ensuring that their party is pulled… in the direction of corporate imperatives… It’s their way or the highway. And they’ve become very good at losing elections to bad Republicans.” Not to put too fine a point on it, Nader then described his independent campaign—unlike four years ago, the Green Party this time chose a candidate who wouldn’t campaign too hard against the Democrats—as “designed to make people angry.” As expected, a reporter asked Nader about his role as “spoiler” in the historically contro-

Gustav Hoeft says all he wanted to do was help Jerry’s kids. Have a little Labor Day weekend fundraiser thing at his Hapa’s nightclub for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. You know, kinda like the Jerry Lewis thing on TV, but without the phone bank or Ed McMahon. Not if your Maui County Liquor Commission has anything to do with it. On July 14, the Commission rejected Hoeft’s request for a temporary extension of his liquor license. “I’m just kind of disgusted with the Liquor Commission,” Hoeft said a few minutes after they rejected his request. “I got turned down because they thought it was going to be a rave party.” Hoeft wanted to keep Hapa’s open all night, but the conditions of his license require his being closed from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. each day. To do it, Hoeft needed an extension of his license so he could stay open from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Hence his nearly half-hour appearance before the Commission. He told them he wouldn’t sell a drop of alcohol outside the normal operating hours specified by his liquor license, but did ask for permission to stay open all night. But the LC didn’t flinch. “It was totally something that Maui needed,” Hoeft told me after the hearing. “I’m just trying to do something good. But where does the responsibility of the board stop? They wondered how I was going to control the parking lot. They were more worried about what’s going on in the parking lot. I told them I would have 12 guards—six inside and six outside.” Because of the LC’s ruling, Hoeft said he won’t not be holding any MDA event, 24hour or otherwise. It’s probably a wise move. Remember, Hoeft got into trouble for this before, earning a $2,000 fine from the Liquor Control Adjudication Board. That was for a Halloween night Maui AIDS Foundation fundraiser in 2003. The LC busted him for being open at 2:08 a.m. The fact that no one was drinking made no impression on the Board. MTW

WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 The county prosecutor’s office won its first conviction in its campaign to stamp out cockfighting on Maui. After a two-hour deliberation, a jury convicted Wailuku resident William Dutro, 61, of membership in a “criminal organization” that promotes the pitting of chicken agin chicken for fun and profit. Not shying away from a chance to sound precious, prosecutor J.W. Hupp called Dutro and his comrades “cocky,” then called upon cockfighting aficionados “to go to the Legislature” if they were “really serious about their cockfighting.” At first, I thought Hupp meant that those crazy State House of Representative guys we send to Oahu really get off on poultry bouts, but looking back over his comments, I’m thinking he meant “call your representative’s secretary so they can put your name on a list of cockfighting fans for further investigation.” Of course, I might just be paranoid, but Dutro is the just the first of 35 defendants on trial for racketeering and gambling—all products of a twoyear Maui Police Department undercover investigation. Thirty-five defendants and two years of snitching, all to keep locals from betting on chicken fighting. Who’d be paranoid about that?

THURSDAY, JULY 15 So-called “compassionate conservativism” aside, Republicans aren’t generally known for spending a lot of time trying to solve problems like homelessness. Local, state and federal budgets always have far more payouts

to corporate welfare than individual welfare. But today, state governor Linda Lingle defied those expectations and said Hawaii needs to do something soon to stop the spread of extreme poverty. The reason for her sudden turnaround? It’s close to affecting Hawaiian property values and tourism. Sure, it’s usually okay for victims of corporate downsizing, rising income inequality and general misfortune to rot on sidewalks and in vacant fields, but when it starts to hit the Chamber of Commerce, it’s “Quick, someone call an emergency legislative session!”

FRIDAY, JULY 16 Picked up my copy of the Lahaina News today, only to find that they’ve broken a potentially huge story. You know that seasonal ban on parasailors and jetskiers in the waters of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary during whale season? Yeah, that’s gone. Struck down by the mighty U.S. District Court. The state ban “is expressly preempted by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and actually conflicts with federal law,” the Lahaina News reported Judge Susan Oki Mollway as ruling. So the state law protects the whales too much, do I have that right? Now that’s just lovely. But as long as the parasail people get to jet around the islands, then I guess justice is served.

SATURDAY, JULY 17 Akaku public access television sends out a rare Saturday press release asking for help to fight corporate media consolidation—something the Federal Communications Commission

got busted Thursday in Honolulu on charges of “fourth-degree sexual assault” near a Kapiolani Park restroom involving an undercover Honolulu Police officer. “I was walking, which I do a lot in Honolulu, and I encountered these two guys,” Blundell told the News. “There was some inappropriate touching, and that’s what led to the sexual abuse charge.” Now some might think this would imperil Blundell’s chances for reelection, but he and GOP officials—who usually frown on “inappropriate touching” between men—insist he’s staying on the ticket. And why not, considering the Democrats are giving him a free pass. Now you don’t think Maui County Democratic Party chairman James “Kimo” Apana would take advantage of this situation and suddenly field a challenger, do you?

MONDAY, JULY 19 Wasting about 45 seconds, Apana announces that he’s got two Democrats waiting to take a shot at Blundell. “We always had the candidates,” Apana laughably told the Maui News, though he neglected to say why he waited until just two days before the filing deadline to announce them. He also neglected to name the mystery candidates, saying they needed to talk over their possible candidacy with their families. (FCC) has ignored for years. “Increasingly, offshore commercial interests dominate and control local media,” states the release. For instance, Akaku notes that for the last three years Emmis Communications has been operating two of the three top-rated Hawaii television stations under the guise of a “temporary” FCC waiver. But then again, the federal government looks at words like “temporary” and “whale sanctuary” differently from you and I.

SUNDAY, JULY 18 You thought that parasailing thing was a big story? Today’s Maui News reports that state representative Brian Blundell (R, 10th District)

TUESDAY, JULY 20 San Diego-based Jack in the Box, Inc. announces it will not accept Visa at all of its 1,553 company-owned and “many” of its 435 franchise locations. Well, there’s one Jack in the Box that won’t be taking Visa. And that would be the infamous Jack in the Box on the West Side of Maui. It won’t take your credit cards because it doesn’t exist! What the hell is the company thinking? What kind of world is this where it’s now legal for me to jet ski and parasail through a Humpback Whale sanctuary that’s just saturated with whales giving birth, but I can’t leave my home at 2 a.m. and get an Ultimate Cheeseburger unless I drive 80,000 miles to Kihei or Kahului. VIAGRA MONOLOGUES

A Palm Beach Post writer reported from the Boca Greens Animal Hospital (Boca Raton, Fla.) in June that “Pumpkin,” a 12-pound Chihuahua, was up and moving well after her recent liposuction surgery. However, the 12 ounces of fat she lost still left her among South Florida’s overweight pets, said to be twothirds of the population. As Pumpkin’s owner was reminded, surgery is not to be a substitute for sensible exercise and a modest number of treats.

In March, U.S. Rep. Major Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., proudly claimed authorship of a controversial rap-music play being seriously considered for staging in New York City. Rep. Jones’ “The Viagra Monologues” champions male sexuality, with lines like (according to a New York Post story), “Monogamy is for chumps” and “Boyhood selfesteem dies/Gawking at the other guy’s size/What deal with the angels/Awarded him a better tubular prize.”

PRIORITIES Police in Fort Myers, Fla., arrested Carlos Chereza, 17, in April and charged him with hiring a hit man to kill his mother and to make it look like a burglary. As is often the case, the “hit man” was actually an undercover detective, who said Chereza’s main concern was to pull off the job without damaging the family’s TV set. And in March, Thailand’s agriculture minister criticized health officials’ proposal to embed microchips in the nation’s 200,000 fighting roosters, to help deal with the avian flu scare sweeping Asia. The minister’s main concern was that the implants would hamper the cocks’ aggressiveness.

Gibson’s won.

Mega Malaise Who else is tired of Wal-Mart? Many people talk about the need to preserve Maui’s small town, rural character. They talk of need to support local companies and help out local shops. Yet every weekend the parking lot at the Kahului Wal-Mart is jammed with cars. Wal-Mart is the antithesis of Maui. Maui is small, comfortable and colorful. Wal-Mart is gigantic, sterile and uniform. The beast from Bentonville, Arkansas, is the world’s largest corporation. It’s $220 billion in revenue is more than the GDP of Israel and Ireland combined. Begun by the Walton family, current company boss S. Robson Walton is one of the wealthiest men on the planet. Its ads show happy workers and low prices, but of course fail to mention its record of environmental violations, sweatshop labor, anti-union practices, basic traffic practices and slave labor purchases from Asia to America. In fact, the average “associate”—WalMart doesn’t like the word “employee”— earns just $15,000 a year. That’s full-time. In comparison, community college teaching is fiscally delicious. Employees also

don’t become eligible for health care benefits until working for two years—then the premium is so expensive only 38 percent are actually covered. Big as it is, even Wal-Mart isn’t immune from the U.S. Justice Department or public opinion. While it’s doubtful the megastore megacompany is in any danger, it is heartening to see local communities stand up to it. Wal-Mart has been found to fail to obtain permits before construction as well as fail to develop a plan for runoff. The company’s even been busted for not building proper fences to prevent runoff from reaching lakes, streams and other bodies of water. In the last three years, Wal-Mart has earned itself millions of dollars in fines for these violations of the federal Clean Water Act. In 2001, Wal-Mart got slapped with a $1 million judgment for allowing runoff to get into water sources. Recently, the company also agreed to pay $3.1 million in fines for violating the Clean Water Act at two-dozen locations in nine different states across America. Compared with corporate profits, such fines are negligible. But they make for splashy headlines and news reports, which

Not so Supercenter are quickly circulated throughout the world. But opposition to Wal-Mart isn’t limited to environmental practices. Just as people joined against the powerful British Trading Companies, locals today are organizing the instant they hear the name “Wal-Mart” to keep the Supercenter out of their communities. In this age of declining manufacturing, small town city councils love Wal-Mart because it promises to give government huge amounts of sales tax revenue. But many communities are standing against large-scale development in their neighborhoods, saying that essentially short-term gain doesn’t even come close to canceling out the long-term damage comanies like Wal-Mart wreck upon the landscape.

The citizens of Inglewood, California recently rejected a ballot measure that would have allowed a warehouse-sized store in the largely African-American Los Angeles suburb. Wal-Mart had wanted a Supercenter, but the City Council blocked the project. The corporate giant went down to defeat by a 60 to 40 percent margin. Similar attempts by the company to open stores in Glendora, California and Chicago, Illinois faltered. In the Windy City, Wal-Mart received a chilly reception because of concern for Wal-Mart’s labor practices. We have a Wal-Mart here, but that doesn’t mean we have to support it. Wal-Mart has stamped a giant footprint in the sand of Hawaii. It is up to us to put it on a supersize diet. MTW

Boycott the Military War opponents should demand personal accountability A haunted young man whose face bears too many lines for his years, jetlagged and limping from a wound sustained in the defense of his country half a world away, emerges from a jetway at San Francisco International Airport. A woman about the same age awaits in the terminal. A peacesign necklace hanging above a loose floralprint dress billowing about her unshaven legs, the hippie chick scornfully scans his uniform, spits in his face and screams “Baby killer!” The veteran scans the crowd for support, but sees only contempt in the faces of passersby. It’s a powerful, tragic cliché of the Vietnam era, dramatized in the Rambo movies, and a cautionary tale for today’s antiwar left. But according to Holy Cross

believe that anything goes. Please, America, don’t blame the soldiers. Blame Bush, and hold him responsible in November.” Of course Bush bears most of the blame for the Iraq war. But what if, to recall a classic poster of the ‘60s, they gave a war and nobody came? (Or, for that matter, what if those who went refused orders to torture and terrorize the locals?) Every man and woman serving in the armed forces enlisted voluntarily. If there hadn’t been either 135,000 people willing to sign their lives away, or an unpopular draft, Bush would/could not have gone to war against Iraq. Antiwar activists ought to spread that message. There was a time when service in U.S. military was honorable and professionally rewarding. But because of politicians who use the military to pump up corporate prof-

its instead of defending us, that was a long time ago. Americans with personal integrity should boycott the volunteer military and discourage everyone they care about to do the same. “They come from parts of the country where jobs are hard to find,” an acquaintance condescendingly excuses the enlistees. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? I’d rather sleep under a bridge, eating trash out of a Dumpster, than murder human beings for Halliburton. Not only is working as a hired gun for the U.S. government bad for your soul, it’s a bad deal financially. Starting pay in the U.S. armed forces runs about $12,000 per year, about the same as working at McDonald’s. The muchvaunted tuition benefit is a joke: at a time when college costs an average of $20,000 per year, a two-year active-duty stint in the army gets you a maximum $7,500. And if some insurgent draws a bead on you, you’ll be treated in shabby, overcrowded Veterans Administration hospitals until you end up on the street, out of work and out of luck. Until military service becomes less of a scam, no one should sign up. Those who have should not reenlist. Who will defend the United States if attrition shrinks the volunteer armed forces? If we’re attacked by a foreign power, as we last were in 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Americans will line up to volunteer. World War II, won six decades ago by a storied generation of draftees and volunteers, was fought to defend American freedom. But we haven’t fought an honorable war since. MTW

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN SERVICE IN U.S. MILITARY WAS HONORABLE AND PROFESSIONALLY REWARDING. BUT BECAUSE OF POLITICIANS WHO USE THE MILITARY TO PUMP UP CORPORATE PROFITS INSTEAD OF DEFENDING US, THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO. College professor Jerry Lembcke, a Vietnam vet and author of The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam, it never happened. “If you go back and look at the historical record, like I did—newspaper accounts, police records, and also just things historians have written,” says Lembcke, “you don’t find any record or any evidence that these things happened—or even that they were being claimed as happening—in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.” There isn’t even one letter written by a soldier at the time referencing such an incident. Nevertheless, the myth lives. Opponents of the U.S. war against Iraq worry that the public may look at them as ideological heirs to those who supposedly used demoralized vets as spittoons. Oppose the war, they say, but support the troops! Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 reflects the left’s internal contradiction about the military. First we see U.S. forces indiscriminately bombing Iraqi civilians, torturing and sexually harassing prisoners and terrorizing women and children in their homes. But the film’s longest segment focuses on deaths and injuries suffered by those who, in Moore’s words, “defend our freedom.” Well, which is it? Are they torturers or foot soldiers of democracy? “When Bush launched an illegal war,” a European reader wrote to Time after the Abu Ghraib scandal broke, “he created an atmosphere that led some Americans to

cocktails and costumes. “For me, it was on Broadway, ‘68,” said a hot-pink vintageclad lady with cat-rimmed glasses. “My parents heard it was banned in Boston and weren’t going to let me go. But my friend and I, we borrowed her cousin’s Cadillac and snuck into the city.” She sighed a smile of reminiscence. “It was really something.” People recalled their first Hair experience with the same nostalgia of watching the first man walk on the moon, remembering an era that was really something to live through. Or so I kept hearing. After all, as Hair hit Broadway in April 1968, the nation simmered with political rage, racism and antiwar protest. In the same month the show debuted, Martin Luther King was shot, followed shortly later by Bobby Kennedy. Police stormed college campuses and arrested kids. People were tuning in, turning on, dropping out, making love, burning bras, burning draft cards. I watched the baby boomers brimming with excitement and reverence to the show we were about to see. I realized

that for many people there, it wasn’t about just going to sit in the dark and watch a play. It was about reconnecting with a part of themselves—a ticket back to the time when the moon was in the seventh house, and in spite of all the darkness, they decided to let the sun shine. Decades later, that collective voice has changed. Be-Ins? Trips? Grooves? Talk about the psychedelic Stone Age. Sure, there might be more of us who—to put it mildly—oppose the current administration’s foreign policy, but instead of vehement “Hell No We Won’t Go,” we see dainty yellow ribbons on the backs of bumpers saying “Let’s Support Our Troops.” So why Hair? Why now? A week before opening night, I decided to find out. I met with Director Marsha Kelly and Maui On Stage Artistic Director/Production Manager Lisa Teichner at Colleen’s Bakery in Haiku. “We’re interested in creating parallels between what went on back then and what is happening now,” said Kelly. “It’s a way for all the former flower children to relive their youth.

It’s the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, and it’s in Wailuku. “The first time I saw Hair, I was stoned out of my gourd,” said a tie-dyed, peace-signed swinger waiting in the wine line next to me at Café Marc Aurel, which was hosting a pre-show party. “Nineteen Seventy. San Fran. Doesn’t get any better than that, baby.” He bobbed his graying head up and down knowingly and gave me a wide toothy grin. “Hmmm,” I said and bit into my cubed cheese. “Far out.” My tie-dyed friend wasn’t the only one letting his inner flower child out to play last Friday at the premiere of Hair. We were down the street from the Iao Theater at the new fancy wine and coffee bar, waiting for the Maui OnStage version of an “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” to begin. The place was a-buzz with all things ‘60s. Theatergoers garbed in daisy prints, fringe and bellbottoms milled outside the crowded café, wearing the lightness that only comes from

And this play begins before the show even starts. Minutes before the opening act, cast members swarmed the audience, touching and teasing and tapping tambourines, showing bandanas, bells, buckles, and bellies. Lots of bellies. Slithering skirts, chest hair, moons, flowers, tie dies. And Jimi Hendrix sang about a wind that cries. It was a circus of sound and color—street theater, or the parking lot of a Dead show. Only it was inside the Iao Theater. The walls wore signs that said “Haight Asbury” and “Peace Love.” On stage loomed a huge caricature of the Statue of Liberty and a six-piece band. As the music started, the “tribe” converged on stage, singing the mysterious mood-setting “Age of Aquarius,” followed by an energetic human-train-dancing “Oh Oh Donna.” In Hair, the music is where it’s at, featuring no less than 52 numbers, with every kind of pop, rock and gospel you can imagine. You can say a lot more for the music than the plot. If you’re looking for action in this show, look no further than this: There’s a war, a draft and a bunch of hippies who roll around and touch each other a lot.

Tribal leader Claude gets drafted. Should he go? Should he not go? He goes. He hallucinates. The end. A sprightly Adam Bowen plays Claude. He sings from the heart and delivers the right mix of animation and innocence. He prances around the entire first act in nothing but loincloth and is one of those people you just can’t stop watching. Bowen is backed by Jim Langford, playing the in-your-face Berger. As far as stage presence and technique go, Langford is the lion who carries the rest of the cubs. Other notables include Jeanie, played by Gina Li, who, from her very first number “Air,” remained consistently strong in

involves an intimate mass of willowy forms—floating arms, legs, limbs—a blurring where one body ends and the other begins. As Kelly promised, the cast “rolls around stage like a litter of puppies.” And yes, they do get nude. Well, some of them. The scene is done in a very innocent, wispy dreamlike way. Instead of being sexy and provocative, it’s more of a quick and sneaky “I’ll show you mine” in the recess yard. The second act delves deeper into the disjointed fantasies of Claude’s mind. If you don’t know that it’s all one big hallucination, you might find the scenes confusing, what with all the cowboys and Indians and Viet Cong running around. The second act lacked the energy of the first, but the cast members sure looked like they were having a good time.

vocals and engaging in style. There’s Woof, played by Rodrigo Rodriquez, who kept the comedy fresh with his flamboyance and simulated sex with a Mick Jagger poster. And there’s Max Reid playing Apollo, who brought his own lighthearted absurdity, not to mention falsetto, to the transgender scene. Opening nights in the theater world rarely go off without a hitch, or five. Hair was not without its share of challenges. The sound system was splotchy, some of the singing was weak and the theater was boiling hot with body heat. So many people were waving their programs to stay cool it distracted from the main action. Still, was that enough reason for the people next to me to walk out at the start of the second act? Perhaps they were just mad Claude had put on pants. The visual presentation was well done. Almost every scene

In the end, Hair is about imagery and escapism, about characters caught in the visceral chaos of war and sex and sadness. The Maui OnStage production may be a far cry from Broadway, but it does capture the simple spirit of the show. Marsha Kelly says that spirit remains relevant, even today. “I want people to participate, to be excited… to be proud to be human, to be ashamed to be human,” she told me. “I just want people to think.”

It’s also a message for today’s youth, reminding them to pay attention to what is going on in the world. On an island, especially, it’s hard to stay in touch with that.” Kelly is called “The Fabulous Marsha Kelly,” and she is. Actor, drama instructor, costume head at ‘Ulalena, Kelly has worked with virtually every performing arts venue here on Maui. This blue-eyed beaded lady with hair hanging long is bright, witty, dramatic and uses the word “freakin’” in sentences, as in, “I know every freakin’ song by heart.” She’s all the things I want to be when I grow up. “I got the ya ya’s for this freakin’ show,’ she told me. “I was a big street protester in the early ‘70s, and I want people to feel what it felt like to us. I want them to see this show and say ‘Yeah!! Yeah!! Yeah!!’” But what did it feel like back then? “There was a certain flavor of those times,” Kelly said. “It was loose and raw. The closest thing here I guess would be the drum circles that gather on Makena Beach, where a bunch of people just hang out for hours at a time.” Of course, as Kelly said, the show’s flavor might feel light, but there’s nothing light about it. “When it hit the Public Theater in 1967, it was shocking,” she said. “It defamed the flag, it bashed the war, it said lines like ‘fuckity fuck fuck fuck.’ And let’s not forget the famous nude scene.” Okay, that stuff might have been shocking in the ‘60s. But let’s face it. We don’t live in Leave it to Beaver land anymore where people shake and shudder at talk of copulation, desecration and masturbation. Cable and Howard Stern changed all that for good. So how can this relic of a show seem relevant and fresh to audiences today? Simply by remaining true to form. “I haven’t changed a word or a lyric,” said Kelly. “I saw the show in the ‘70s and the music has been swimming in my head ever since. I’ve been in audiences at Hair where people yell from their seats, jump up on stage, dance and get naked. It’s all about honesty.” Teichner agreed. “And people should know, we encourage full audience participation,” she said. “We have rules to break and we will break them.” Not that you’ll have to get naked and streak through the aisles yourself at this production of Hair. Unless, of course, you want to. Kelly had her own plans for opening night: “I’m just going to lie down, spread my legs and give birth, letting all the actors come out to play.”

Farmer and excavator

COFFEE From the beginning I wanted to be a farmer. I’m originally from Sicily and came to the states when I was 18. I started at the East Coast where I went to school and worked in a restaurant, then went to the West Coast. I came here 15 years ago. My previous restaurant was Antonio’s in Kihei. I was owner, chef, everything. I miss the restaurant but it takes a lot of time. Finally I bought property two years ago, since then I’ve been planting little by little. It takes a lot of time and patience. When I got this land, everything was Christmas berries. I cleared a section, dug the trees out. About half is done. Through trial and error I learn what grows and what doesn’t. I grow all kinds of vegetables and herbs, using no pesticides on the land. Most seeds I get are from my wife’s mother in Milan. I have 100 fruit trees: I grow mango, avocado, lychee. Eventually that will be the main business. I’ll sell at farmer’s markets and to neighbors. There are 50 chickens. I bake bread for them and they also eat corn and seeds. They lay between one to two-dozen eggs a day. They’re more like pets—I don’t kill them. I bury them when they die. In the near future I’ll have goats for making milk, cheese and yogurt. People who want to buy from me can call 572-1068. Being Italian, I love to cook Italian food. One of my favorite vegetables is eggplant. I like to make eggplant parmigiana, vegetarian lasagna with eggplant, stuffed eggplant with meat or rice. When I wake up at five o’clock in the morning I feed the cats, the chickens. I check the garden, cut useless trees and plant new fruit trees. Every single minute I’m enjoying what I’m doing. When I feel the soil, make my own compost and put it into the earth, it feels like I’m having a second life. MTW

“North Shore” Mondays, 7 p.m. on KHON Channel 2

So there’s this new TV show, it’s totally like The OC but it’s set on Oahu’s North Shore at this hotel called the Grand Waimea. There’s the boss guy and another guy, Jason, who just kinda walks around all the time—I think he’s a manager. There’s some local braddah with dreads, Frankie (played by superhottie Jason Momoa), and a young lifeguard kid who’s always in trouble. Brooke Burns plays a brunette, Nicole, who’s engaged to a shady character named Morgan. But Nicole is also the love interest of that manager guy, Jason. Then there’s this blonde girl Tessa, who gives a really great sinister look and gets Nicole in trouble all the time. There’s also another blonde chick who’s supposed to be a local, with mom troubles and an extreme adventure tour guide boyfriend. Jason always finds Nicole’s fiancé Morgan in compromising situations, but Morgan always does some cheesy romantic stunt to get Nicole’s trust. The women are sexy, the guys are hot, and the pidgin is hilarious, so brah, no mess around! [KELLIE R. HOLLIDAY]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

The Cafeteria That Funny Swami Guy Friday, 7:30 p.m., Maui Tropical Plantation [POLITICAL COMEDY] Hey kids, it’s time for Swami Beyondananda, the “cosmic comic” who dispenses “comedy disguised as wisdom.” Or is it “wisdom disguised as comedy?” He’s the Yogi from Muskogee. He’s written Duck Soup for the Soul. “Don’t get even,” he advises. “Get odd.” Get it? Get it? I asked you a question! Yeah, you’re damn right you get it. Look, this Swami guy may not be the funniest person on this planet, but he is at least entertaining. And his heart is in the right place. And he once killed a wild boar with his bare hands and ate him. No, really. My cousin saw it. Seriously. I mean, my cousin’s a lunatic, but I don’t think he’d make up something like that. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO] “Swami for Precedent World-Win Campaign” will also be on Saturday, July 31, at The Studio Maui. Opening both shows is Maui’s own “Organic Laughter”Comedy Improv with The Pono Players! Tickets $20 advance, $25 at the door. Available at Borders Books and Music, Mandala Ethnic Arts in Paia and Blue HI Water Sports in Kihei. For info, call 875-8820. Or you can catch Swami online at www.wakeuplaughing.com.

Taro Festival

[CAR SHOW] Maui Island Cruisers and Valley Isle Motors present “Hot Rod Summer Family Fun Day” with oldies music, a twist contest, hot dogs, cotton candy and a jumping castle—although, you might wanna get your keiki over to the jumping castle before you feed ‘em the hot dogs and cotton candy, ‘k?!

Saturday-Sunday, Hana Ballpark As if the countless waterfalls, bountiful botanicals and that omnipresent, luscious scent of guava weren’t enough to make the long and windy drive to Hana, this weekend also marks the arrival of the 12th Annual East Maui Taro Festival. It’s a celebration of Hawaiian culture and well, all things taro—including, mmm…poi! There’ll be live music and dance by some amazing folks, like Steve Sargenti, Uncle Richard Hoopii, Marty Dread and the Halau Hula O Aluanu. There are demonstrations, outings and other events all weekend long, so for more information, call 248-8586 or visit www.TaroFestival.org.

DAY

Starting Sunday, through Aug. 1, at Maui Ocean Center [EDUMACATION] Sure, sharks are scary. They are fierce predators who have extremely well-developed senses and occasionally display mistaken identity when it comes to humans and food. What do you expect from a beast that never sleeps, is constantly growing new sets of teeth and has been around for about 430 million years? “Shark Week” is a forum for naturalists and divers to help you confront your fears or satisfy your morbid curiosity about the 40 species of sharks that reside in Hawaiian waters. Knowledge is power, after all. And hey, there’s even a chance for you to dive in their Hammerhead Shark exhibit, if you dare…

Bratt that will make even the most pinkadoring members of the audience want to hurl. The movie never finds its stride as it stumbles between stagnate expository scenes and unexciting fights. A large part of the problem is that Berry does not yet possess the skill and technique to fulfill a demanding leading lady role. How to make a jewel from a bag of sand From the looks of director Pitof’s poorly realized effort of bringing DC Comics’ Catwoman to the big screen, it seems unlikely that there will be a sequel for the feline superhero/villain. The ridiculous S&M tinged costume that Halle Berry struts around in is the first obvious clue that Hollywood’s latest flirtation with comic book movies is something less than inspired. The script (by John Brancato and Michael Ferris—The Game, and John Rogers—The Core) is a dull ceremony that doesn’t even bother to embrace the cliches it flippantly tosses around in every scene. Patience Philips (Berry) is a wanna-be artist working as an ad designer for a cosmetics conglomerate when her employers ruthlessly murder her after she discovers the harmful effects of their new line of beauty crème. Patience is reborn as a human with feline traits, through the mystical powers of an Egyptian cat that breathes life into her pliant body. A tortured romantic relationship develops between Patience and police detective Tom Lone (Benjamin Bratt) as she vacillates between her Catwoman identity and her true self. The result is a prosaic comic book action movie for the 10 and under crowd. Spider-Man 2 has already swept the summer of comic book action movies, raising the bar on what audiences can expect from the

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Wednesday, July 28 Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Entirely set on and around a tree-lined lake where a tiny Buddhist monastery floats on a raft amidst a breathtaking landscape, this stunningly photographed wide-screen lotus of a film will touch your heart's core. A "masterful portrait of the seasons of life" (Roger Ebert) in the way it captures the cycles of life and a triumphant insight into what's important in life "even for those who don't happen to be Buddhist" (Entertainment Weekly). In Korean with English subtitles. Unrated. 103 min.

New This Week THE BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an exAmerican assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. CAT WOMAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Halle Berry stars in this telling of the creation of the popular DC Comics anti-heroine—i.e., a feline lady in a tight, black latex bodysuit. The story of Catwoman starts with a rather timid woman who, by twist of fate, is granted amazing cat powers— self-cleaning and mouse-catching notwithstanding. She also encounters villains and villainesses (here, deliciously portrayed by Sharon Stone), as well as a complicated love interest (hellooo, Benjamin Bratt!). But hey, let’s face it, this movie is all about the cat suit. See Film Critique. DE-LOVELY - (PG13) - Drama - A musical biopic on American songwriting legend Cole Porter (Kevin Kline). A deeply paradoxical man—he loved his wife (Ashley Judd) very much, but engaged in more than a few homosexual affairs—Porter found the time to write classic after classic as though it were no more difficult than ordering lunch. More musical than many musicals, the movie also includes contemporary artists like Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Cole and others belting out Porter’s best hits their way. HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE - (PG13) - Comedy - A corporate dude (John Cho) and his medical school pal (Kal Penn) smoke a lot of pot one night and then decide to drive through late night New Jersey searching for White Castle hamburgers, which are these little square hamburgers they sell on the East Coast that are supposed to be really good but are, in fact, too small and bland to provide any real sustenance. Anyhoo, hilarity ensues, which is unusual because the guy who played Doogie Howser co-stars as himself. I WILL SURVIVE - (Not Rated) - This film will make you laugh or cry or shrink down in your seat in fear—or perhaps all of the above. It’s a story about something that happened and the people that had to deal with it. But mainly, it’s a story about life—a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. You know, like this blurb.

who in the past has brilliantly skewered Corporate America (Roger and Me) and the NRA (Bowling for Columbine)—shines a light on all the economic and political connections between the Bush and bin Laden clans. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Third in the Harry Potter dynasty of children’s books, this storyline evolves around Harry’s inability to tame the beast within him, as he goes on the run, not realizing that he is also being chased by a renegade wizard played by sexy master villain Gary Oldman (hello? Bram Stoker’s Dracula?). I, ROBOT - PG-13 - Science Fiction/Adventure - This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. Based on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s classic collection of short stories of the same name, the movie follows Smith’s detective character as he tries to prove a robot violated its basic programming and willingly committed a crime. Also stars hottie Bridget Moynahan. KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. With Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? RIDING GIANTS - (PG13) - Documentary - The complete breakdown on the hows, whys and all-important whos of big wave surfing—guys like Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton who’ve made names for themselves towing behind jet skis into monster waves at places like Mavericks in California and our own Peahi (aka Jaws). Helmed by Stacy Peralta of Dogtown and Z-Boys fame, the film has all the makings of a surf classic. SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The

princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! SLEEPOVER - (PG) - Comedy - Oh My God, these four teenage girls are, like, so happy to be out of the eighth grade that they have a slumber party that is so cool but then it gets even better, you see, when they start competing against their school’s popular girls in an all-night scavenger hunt, forcing them to borrow Julie’s dad’s car and sneak into these clubs and even kiss their first boys, all without Julie’s mom finding out. SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). A CINDERELLA STORY - PG - Teen/Romantic Comedy - Another fable-filled fantasy about a super cute and really nice high school chick (Hilary Duff) who is tortured by her tacky stepmom and catty, low-self-esteemcompensating, jealous stepsisters, while she covets her online Prince Charming, the popular quarterback with the secret sensitive side. Will he find the cell phone she left behind just before the clock strikes midnight? THE TERMINAL - (PG13) - Drama - Steven Spielberg directs Tom Hanks as some Eastern European guy who gets stranded in an airport terminal because his country ceases to exist. It’s a light-hearted film, which is odd considering it’s based on a true story about a guy who ended up killing himself because he couldn’t take spending weeks and weeks in a sterile prison listening to the words “United Flight 167 now boarding at Gate 32. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned.

They’re finally back after a six year hiatus! This is the Beasties’ heaviest, most purely hip-hop album yet. This is pure NYC old school hip-hop. The fifteen short tunes prove their lyrical mastery with the most creative word play. Who else can get away with rhyming “I’m the player and the coach. I’m no roach. I bought my grandma a brand new brooch” on “Rhyme the Rhyme Well?” “Triple Trouble” contains a super dope sample from The Sugarhill Gang. This album is loaded with obscure samples from hip-hops roots – Chuck D., Marly Marl, Kool G Rap, among many. The Beasties’ can dis with the best of them, like on “Hey Fuck You,” but also put out a conscious message and rail against the current state of right-wing-ism and point out that, “we’re strung out on OPEC.” Above all, this is a love letter to their NYC. When I think of New York, I think the Beasties and they prove why on To the 5 Boroughs, especially on the moving tune “An Open Letter to NYC.” —Capitol Records 2004 [JOE GATTO]

OJOS DE BRUJO Ojos de Brujo from Barcelona is revolutionizing Flamenco by adding electronic atmospherics, scratching, rapping, punk and North African elements. These Catalán rebels have made one of the most unique and irresistible albums of the year. Barí is a gypsy word that is a synonym of mana, and this band is flowing with it. Lead by Marina “La Canillas,” whose distinct, raspy voice moves right along in perfect time with the flamenco rhythm, Ojos de Brujo is a large, rocking ensemble. Every track features impeccable flamenco guitar, deep rhythms and a host of Spanish, African and Latin percussion instruments. A European hippy free-spiritedness characterizes the conscious lyrics. “Quien Engaña No Gana (Cheaters Never Win)” is a hip-hoppy, tabla filled tune whose refrain sticks in the head. “Tangillo de María” is an ode to hash – “que rico el kif.” This is a diverse, one of a kind party album with a deeper message. —World Village Music [JOE GATTO]

PUREVOLUME

It’s official: I am completely obsessed with this album. Seriously, somebody might need to make an intervention. I know this whole cute boy, folk-rock genre is being pretty much played out by the likes of Ryan Adams, John Mayer, Jack Johnson—but I can’t help it. Irish troubadour Damien Rice has made a tragically beautiful album—intimate to the point of being naked, and utilizing such sweet harmonies with the vocals of fair maiden, Lisa Hannigan on songs like “Volcano.” With barebones instrumention—generally, acoustic guitar with an occasional mournful solo cello—Rice and Hannigan’s vocals carry the weight of lyrics that are simple yet full of emotion. “Blower’s Daughter” is achingly passionate—the way Rice sings “I can’t take my eyes off of you” chokes me up every damn time. I’m such a sap. Right down to the last few seconds of “Eskimo” with Hannigan’s a cappella version of “Silent Night.” —2003 Vector Recordings [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “RUSHMORE” Originally writer/director Wes Anderson wanted this story scored completely by the Kinks, but then decided to open it up to the whole British Invasion. Since this was only his second film and his cult following had yet to manifest, he needed to search a little harder for songs he could afford to buy the rights to, or just make his own. The result is a feel-good soundtrack of great songs that will have you singing along (probably, like me, before you know the words). —’99 Polygram Records [K. BRADLEY LENZ] Got Music? Spontaneous Absurdity

The Pono Players Appearing every Friday night at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Bada Bing, 1945 S. Kihei Rd, Kihei. Call 875-0188 for reservations.

Laughing along with The Pono Players Imagine being on center stage in a room with 100 people waiting to laugh. Now imagine having nothing to guide you but creativity, imagination and wit. Sound agonizing? That’s what The Pono Players do for fun. “Improv is different from any other type of performance,” says Steve Nikolau, member of the four-person comedy improv group. “It’s the audience’s focus that allows us to do what we do. We just play on the magic.” “Yeah, you guys are the weirdos,” his teammate Matthew Brass says with a grin. The only professional comedy improv group on Maui, The Pono Players are advancing from the hills of Haiku to capture the Kihei nightlife with their Organic Laughter act, which shows twice every Friday night at Bada Bing in Kihei. “There’s a huge hunger for dinner theater,” Brass says. “People want something lighter, something different from the usual bar and club scene. Wailea Nights is the only other thing like this around.” Nikolau agrees, saying that, “Maui is a creative vehicle for breeding a variety of talent and we want people to know other things are out there.” Judging by their Web bios, each troupe member takes advantage of the creativity Maui spawns. Outside of acting, their hobbies include massage therapy, theology, dance and graphic

The Pono Players create Organic Laughter design. That diversity of interests helps them on stage. In the premiere Organic Laughter show last Friday, the members were able to create, in near-perfect rhyme, their own Shakespearian lines for the audience-suggested skit, “Fairies in the Hood.” This was just one of the evening’s many successes. A sea of

grins swept across the crowd the moment the four comedians attacked the stage, clad in black and dancing in spontaneous absurdity. The highlight of the warm-up skit, “Emotional Symphony,” was Kristin Kora’s very real and exhausting interpretation of panic, which instantly evoked excitement in the crowd. Nikolau’s sexually explicit rendition of “Taking Grandma for a Test Ride” also received uproarious laughter. Newcomer Tom Althouses’ facial expressions, combined with Brass’s wittiness during “Slow-Motion Fire Fighter,” stirred a few giggles, too. But it was during “Master Goofbaum” that things took a wrong turn. Dressed in long gray beards and Yiddish black hats, the comedians tried to collectively answer philosophical questions from the audience, by taking one-word turns. It was their inability to provocatively answer, “what came first, the chicken or the egg?” that caused people to return to their half-eaten entrees or request their checks. With some luck and the help of a blonde, blue-eyed, woman volunteer, The Pono Players turned things around with “Chain Murder,” a skit based on the popular board game CLUE. The man next to me stopped signing the check he’d requested and suddenly gave the show a second chance. The volunteer’s imitation web slinging, moon-walking and body washing, helped the comedians discover that Spiderman had used a sponge to kill someone on the moon. She earned herself, and the skit, unanimous audience approval. But it was “Superheroes Who Don’t Exist” that allowed the comedians to regain total control. The moment Mr. Mighty Tight appeared in his techno-colored skin-tight leotards and a fearful Bubble Gum Man cried out, “My God, what is that gigantic thing in your pants?” everyone in the crowd was roaring. Even the cook. MTW BY BARUKH SHALEV

For the last decade, hip-hop has become an increasingly bloated, self-referential parody of itself. Unlike graffiti art, hip-hop has lost much of the Dionysian flavor that once distinguished its magnificence. An aggressively adolescent scene whose banality is matched only by its increasing irrelevance, hip-hop often celebrates the most humiliating and base aspects of inner city culture. Then there’s local rap artist Desmond D. When I met him at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, I almost missed him. He is not flashy. He is well spoken and quiet. Just a non-descript black guy in blue warm-up pants. Desmond D. and people like him are the new, international face that could ultimately save hip-hop from itself. They are part of a movement that is the result of the globalization of American culture. “For me, hip-hop meant one thing, America,” he said. “America was hip-hop and hip-hop was America.” Today, the most dynamic hip-hop comes from people traditionally on the

ARIES: Laugh out loud. It’s safe to go out and have some fun again. Since you’re an Aries you don’t wear your heart on your sleeve. You wear it on your head. Discover the art of being outrageous. What you don’t know may help you. TAURUS: After blowing off some steam you laid down the house rules. Once you’re done taking care of mother and father, you have the right to pursue a love of your own. Creative ideas come up that need investment. GEMINI: The neighborhood mouth has been let loose on the community. What will you say to shock us this time? Stirring things up is part of your game. Your house is about to become a hive buzzing with activity. Work on cooperation to avoid stinging. CANCER: By now I hope you’ve come out of your shell. Find new ways to generate capital. Find information on where the new wealth is coming from. You’re set to discipline yourself into making some modest gains. Sweets will make you gain in an unhealthy way. LEO: Wake up and be ready to pounce. Your prey is right in front of you. There is no time like the present. There is little time for cat and mouse games. Quit playing with that ball of yarn and get ready for the best chicken you’ve ever tasted. VIRGO: Spend more time in prayer and meditation. Your intuition is extra active. Keep a dream journal. Address your fears. You’ll be complimented on your quick wit. Take time to visualize where you want to be in the next three months. LIBRA: Thursday morning to Saturday afternoon features an easy-going Libra moon. These are powerful days for you. Your social influence is strong. Your people-pleasing skills are in demand. Show and share your brilliant insights. SCORPIO: People can get mad at you for not buying their lies. Some people subscribe to common fears. You seem to be curious about the origins of everything, including popular phobias. Use your strong inner will to propel your best talents into action. SAGITTARIUS: The recess bell has been rung. It’s time to get out and live. Perhaps you’re ready for a non-mechanized journey to the islands via traditional boats. Your sense of courage, adventure and bravery is great. Taste it, don’t waste it. CAPRICORN: The honeymoon is over— you’re officially allowed to go off. Transformation can bite. We need to lose some things in order to gain new opportunities. Life is precious. Even the difficult times are worth savoring. Prepare for deep healing. AQUARIUS: There must be something in the water. People appear to be going off in crazy and wild directions. It’s times like these when good friends and good lovers mean the most to us. Celebrate interdependencies. We need each other. PISCES: Personal freedom and the need to detach yourself from a bad situation is your main priority. Dive into the conflict. Confront your personal addictions and vendettas. Charitable causes are calling. Nurture yourself as you nurture others. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Jacqueline Brookes 7/24/30, Haile Selassie 7/23/1892, Mick Jagger 7/26/43

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Damsel Not So Much In Distress “Boys—why don’t they all just DIE?” Jen asked one day while we were milling about the kitchen. I was sure she was kidding. Some of her best friends are boys, after all. “They might be all right if we just took out their vocal cords,” she added. “Yeah, but they’d still have those stupid looks on their faces,” I said. Jen took a thoughtful puff off her cigarette. “Yeah—we’ll have to botox them, too,” she said. She looked serious. We’re going to hell, I thought. So that Wednesday, while she went to work, I secretly went to see a film based on one of the most fictitious and frivolous romantic fable ever created—Cinderella. The movie was actually supposed to be Valentin, but the Maui Film Festival peeps had a little problem last minute with shipping or something so we got Ella Enchanted instead. Jen would be skeptical—see above—but I was totally charmed by the film. I even decided I don’t hate teen flick princess Anne Hathaway so much. And it was somewhat comforting to me that despite all my bitter mockeries of the male species, that I am still a sucker for fairy tales and happily ever after, especially with a rhyming narrator. Then I went skipping off to Paia. Of course, I had to stop by the SandBar and say hi to Reeny, who was bartending and still chiding me on my propensity towards “fleshy white men.” While I was there, a charming Rick and Sara breezed in, excited to see Laird Hamilton on the David Letterman Show at the bar, since they didn’t have a TV at home. I love people who don’t own television sets. Somehow they just seem so… radical. The bar was really crowded when an oblivious girl ordered a strawberry margarita—the dreaded blended drink! I was momentarily appalled. Then I noticed a hipster-cute boy playing pool who was definitely very white but maybe not so fleshy. I tried to get an okay by Reeny but my friends cockblocked any flirting that might have commenced. Sometimes friends are just so overrated. On my way to Charley’s, I stopped by Milagros to say hi to “P.L.” Dave, who made some comment about my boobs and the temperature outside. Yep, that pretty much put an end to my fairy tale dreaminess. At Charley’s, DJ Sal and Lucky Brown were spinning to a large crowd of lovelies. I ordered a drink from Elizabeth and this older gentleman sitting at the bar next to me leaned over and told me he loved me. Fairy tale reborn! I had a comforting conversation with Skin Deep’s effervescent tattoo artiste Rainbow about how we love to escape the west side and just drive all over the place to see what’s up. And I thought I was the only nutball! Then the crew of merry men from Evolved Art Tattoo insisted I was following them, which I was not. I also discovered a couple of old pals, Sarah and Becky, who were in the midst of discussing how they tend to attract only men who are either married or 30 years older than them. Then Becky started dancing—an older guy doing the Monster Mash quickly joined her. When Becky had enough and decided to go home, I headed back to the SandBar with Sarah. That hipster-cute boy I had noticed earlier was talking to oblivious strawberry margarita ordering girl. The tattoo posse from Evolved Art came back but, whatever, I was there first. Sarah and I discussed career choices, relationships and ennui, as my old boss Cinco and “P.L.” Dave came in. Soon after, we met an interesting dude named Clyde, who was carrying around a very large copy of Clive Cussler’s Serpent. Not much later, my Jeep sputtered out on Hwy. 380 between Kahului and Ma’alaea. So as I waited for my dear roommate to save me, I thought again about the idea of fairy tale wishes and Prince Charmings on white horses. Then Jen arrived in her pickup truck with a gas can and Jimmy, whom she met at the gas station and decided to accompany her on this late night rescue mission of a damsel not so much in distress but maybe, well, just out of gas.
