LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR GUY READS ENTIRE PAPER! I don’t understand the point of your LC Watch column. If you’re trying to be informative, the effort is sorely lacking. Is this a satirical feature? It’s not exactly humorous or cutting edge. Maybe you just enjoy making trouble for the Liquor Inspectors who are trying to do their job and support their families. I have an idea, why don’t you guys do your job and actually get your information from the source instead of faking your way through a nonsense column by rewriting information you snatched off the internet? Better yet, make the rounds along with the inspectors since your entire paper seems to be devoted to bar hopping. I’m beginning to wonder if Maui Time is a newspaper or a guidebook for alcoholics. -Frank Penn, via email The Editor responds: LC Watch columns are drawn straight from Department of Liquor Control reports, hearings and corporate filings.

I see [Honolulu Councilman Mike] Gabbard, a guy who wants to represent Hawaii in the [state] House of Representatives, screaming about gays. Seems like it is his main thing. And [Governor Linda] Lingle and the Republicans say right on!! Then, when one of their own, [state representative Brian] Blundell, is caught with his hands “inappropriately touching” another man—well, Lingle and the other Republicans say—just a guy who has a problem and they still back him for his state representative position in Lahaina (Coconut Wireless, July 22). They won’t touch the word “gay” or whatever. What a bunch of hypocrites these folks are. Unbelievably, it seems they have two faces. One for everyone else and one for themselves. What a very strange bunch. I don’t like parties and this really lets me see why. I sure won’t trust them come time to vote, except for coun-

ty council that’s supposed to be no party any way. -Elie Stamin, Kihei

CAN’T WE ALL JUST JET ALONG? I have been following the developments of the nullified state law by parasail operators on Maui (Coconut Wireless, July 22). I agree that the law was unfair to the parasail business operators. I do not feel that the whales are harmed by these licensed operators. The logical solution is to go around and to avoid them which they had been doing for the years preceding the ban without incident. These are turbulent times with many emotional people willing to go to extremes to protect the whales. I would expect our elected representatives, and media, to take a professional, businesslike approach to this issue, based on fact and not emotional reactions. Everyone wants to see the whales enjoy their Hawaiian habitat and make sure that they are protected wherever they go, see business prosper in Hawaii, and see our community members gainfully employed. -Susan Hernandez, via email

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the jackass who stole my glasses while I was out surfing. My sight is unfortunately not the best, and since I’m not the best surfer—yet—I have to leave my glasses wrapped in my towel on shore. So when I went out, you found my $600 prescription glasses and decided to just take them! I’m pretty sure you can’t see anything in them since they were made for me and my narrow-sighted, cross-eyed eyes. But now I have to cancel my trip to the mainland so I can afford to pay for new glasses. You see, they weren’t insured. I hope you feel really bad about yourself. Mourning Coco

The Ken Yokouchi Show

Why the Maui Humane Society killed a puppy after just 48 hours This is a story about a very cute little puppy named Coco who loved people but ran away from home and then wound up at the Maui Humane Society, where, after staying there just 48 hours, was deemed “unadoptable” and euthanized. Coco was about six weeks old when Kula resident and Paradise Spice owner Charles Bunch adopted her. A friend’s dog had just given birth to a large litter, and Bunch’s family decided to take one of the puppies. A bulldog-terrier mix, Coco was very friendly and, like most puppies, had a tendency to cry when left alone. On July 20, Coco dug underneath the chain-link fence that surrounds two sides of Bunch’s quarter-acre home and escaped. But that day, another Kula resident found Coco. Not knowing whom she belonged to—she wore no collar or tags— the neighbor took her to the Maui Humane Society. Three days of fruitless searching later, Bunch finally contacted the shelter. Humane Society Director of Animal Control Amy Anderson took the call. At first, Anderson seemed hopeful. She asked Bunch to describe the puppy. But then she got quiet. She asked Bunch if Coco cried when separated from people. Bunch said she did. “I’m afraid I have some terrible news,” Bunch remembers Anderson saying. She began to cry as she told him Coco had been killed just 24 hours earlier. Bunch said the realization that his puppy was dead devastated him. He set up a website showing pictures of Coco and announcing that the shelter “failed” its stated mission of trying to find a home for “every orphaned animal.” And he wrote letters to local newspapers excoriating the shelter. An edited version ran in The Maui News on July 30. “An ounce of common sense could have prevented this death,” Bunch’s original letter said. “[Coco] cried because she was lonely for her owner, or even simple human contact. Are these signs of an unwanted, stray animal? She was used to being loved… Who now wishes to take a lost animal to the Maui Humane Society?” Anderson said Bunch’s criticism stung the shelter, but refused to blame him. “Management made the decision to euthanize,” said Anderson, who’s worked at the Maui Humane Society for 16 years. “I didn’t make the decision and I’m not going to question the decision because it’s not an easy decision to make. [But it’s] something we need to actually look at. When you’re running at full capacity, have nowhere to put dogs, that’s when decisions have to be made.”

A bar owner recently asked me what sorts of people end up appointed to the Maui County Department of Liquor Control Commission and Adjudication Board. I thought about the question, then I thought about Edwin “Ken” Yokouchi. Yokouchi has sat on the Adjudication Board since April 1, 2001, which means he has a little less than two years left on the panel. Usually subdued to the point of rarely, if ever, questioning witnesses or defendants, Yokouchi’s vice chairman status forced him to speak while running the July 8 meeting in Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama’s absence. When he’s not attending monthly LC hearings, Yokouchi is an exterminator, running Valley Isle Pest Control in Wailuku. Corporate filings list him as the president, with his wife holding treasurer and secretary titles. But Yokouchi also dabbles in real estate huis. Yokouchi’s most intriguing membership is in the Wailuku-based Alvin Tanaka, et al real estate hui—and not merely because Maui County Liquor Commissioner Manuel Moniz, Jr. is also a general partner. The Tanaka hui is run out of the Valley Isle Real Estate office, which is also listed as the registered agent. One of the most respected and wellknown real estate firms in the state, Valley Isle is run by Ken’s relative Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi (There are other Yokouchis sprinkled liberally throughout many real estate huis). Long before becoming the most famous patron of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center—the MACC’s Founders Court bears his name—Pundy was the most powerful Democrat on Maui. Yokouchi was completely wired into the political and development worlds in the 1950s and ‘60s— basically, the Ka’anapali Resort wouldn’t exist today were it not for Pundy’s brokering. But back to Ken. Corporate filings list his name as a partner or director in two other huis, one of which has been in operation for over 30 years. Since the last day of 1999, Yokouchi has been a general partner in Kahuluibased Hui Akamai, a well-known conglomerate which has been developing real estate since 1968. In 1997, Yokouchi joined another real estate hui, Wailuku-based Aloha Hui Aikane. In 2002, he became the hui’s registered agent, which partly explains why the company is run out of his home. All in all, it’s quite a resume for a public official who judges liquor law infractions.

Coco, a few weeks before his death Despite her wish not to question the decision to euthanize, Anderson kept returning to the issue. “How do you make that decision?” she asked. “I don’t think two days is long enough, personally.” Anderson said state law is very clear on the issue of killing dogs left at the shelter. The Humane Society must hold licensed dogs for at least nine days, but need only hold unlicensed dogs for two. Because Coco wasn’t wearing a collar, she fell in the latter category. According to Bunch, Coco suffered from a skin disease that made it impossible to attach a collar to her neck. Ironically, the disease— which he said a month of antibiotics had nearly cured—contributed to shelter management’s belief that no one would want the dog. “We have 24 kennels and they’re always full,” said Anderson. “In the isolation area in the back are seven kennels and those are all full. Every day we get dogs. We can have three, four days when we don’t have to put down any dogs. That’s joyous. Then there are weeks when we put down dogs every day. The other day we got 28 puppies in one hour. That’s tough. One of the litters has ringworm, and that’s not helpful. Our goal is to become a nokill shelter. But the only way to do that is to get adoptions up.” Bunch said he understands the shelter is crowded. But he insists that “better judgment” would have saved his dog. “The main thing I would hope happens is they at least give owners a week,” he said. “Animals are supposed to be saved, not destroyed.” MTW

WEDNESDAY, JULY 28 The Honolulu Advertiser reports that 48-year-old Ka’anapali Development Corporation vice president A. James Wriston, III died Sunday at Maui Memorial Medical Center from a brain aneurysm. The former Amfac field engineer’s most recent claim to fame had been his June 1 announcement that his company would not be knocking down the old Pioneer Mill smokestack when they demolish the rest of the property sometime next year… Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The political season’s begun. And that means the candidates will be lining up to tell us what to think. But Project Vote Smart has for the last decade sought to tell us what they think. Founded by such radicals as former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater (R, Arizona), former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis, former U.S. congressman Newt Gingrich and former U.S. Senator George McGovern, the non-profit sends out “political awareness tests” each election cycle to every national and state candidate, including the more than two dozen candidates for various Hawaiian offices. Basically a series of check-off boxes in which the candidate identifies those principles he or she supports, the proposed Hawaiian test includes issues like abortion, health care reform, drug treatment and the ever-popular cap on retail gas prices. Usually, incumbents looking at probable reelection trash the questionnaire, while unknowns, independents and hopeless kamikaze candidates fill it out in amazing detail. And officials wonder why voters are so cynical.

THURSDAY, JULY 29 In these trying, uncertain, even scary times, it’s nice to know that Corporate America rests on a solid foundation of strength. Just solid. So solid that the foundation is actually two foundations. And these foundations are, in no particular order, sugary high-fat snacks and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigations. And no corporation better exemplifies this right now than our own Winstom-Salem, North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. The company—which operates exactly one store in the state of Hawaii and it’s in our own Kahului— has really been taking it in the shorts from this whole no-carb diet thing. In fact, their stock has dropped 50 percent this year alone. Anyways, the southern company that can glaze a price of fried dough like it’s no one’s business is now the subject of an “informal, non-public probe” by the SEC. A Krispy Kreme statement says the company is “cooperating” with the probe, which is examining accounting practices related to buying back certain franchises. Accounting, got it. But this isn’t going to affect my ability to get a dozen to go, right?

Anyway, press releases aren’t actually difficult to write, especially for “editors” who supposedly look at them every day. In fact, today I got a perfectly clear and understandable release from a public relations firm advertising Swheat Scoop, the new kitty litter that doesn’t aggravate feline respiratory problems.

It’s dead! No, it’s alive! Sorry, it’s still dead. Wait, it’s alive again! What else could I be talking about except the famed Akaka Bill, which would seek to give Native Hawaiians similar status to Native Americans. Governor Linda Lingle, U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs love the bill, with just about everyone else arrayed against it. Now it seems right wing Senator Jon Kyl (R, Arizona) may be on the verge of killing it. According to today’s Associated Press story, Kyl is convinced the bill will “violate the United States Constitution” by creating different legal codes for different ethnic groups. “This would not produce racial reconciliation in Hawaii,” Kyl said in a letter obtained by the AP. “Instead, it is a recipe for permanent racial conflict.” Of course, it’s hard to imagine how killing the bill will lead to ethnic harmony, but no one really wants that, right?

FRIDAY, JULY 30 Maui Weekly’s News and Sports Editor Cort Gallup declares himself a Democrat and runs against Republican Chris Halford in the 11th state legislative district, which represents South Maui. Considering that Gallup considers himself a writer and editor, it’s odd he chose to announce his leaving from the Weekly to run a full-time campaign by sending the media an undated, poorly written press release containing numerous grammatical and tense errors. It’s also kind of confusing, at one point saying that Gallup’s mother “lives in the far north

him how that could be, since New York has technically been at Orange Alert since Sept. 11, 2001. So then Hawaii’s own Civil Defense Division felt compelled to send out a release saying the state was not going to Orange Alert. Wonderful. You know, the Bush Administration didn’t inherit this color-coded alert thing—they invented it. You’d think they’d understand it. … More than 75 percent of all mothers in Hawaii breastfeed their newborns. It’s the highest in the nation. This is important because today begins World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme is “Exclusive breastfeeding: The Gold Standard—Safe, Sound and Sustainable.” Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m a guy, but I have no idea what that means.

So this morning I wake up and see Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge— who always seems to look like a frightened elementary school principal—on TV saying the fed is going to Orange Alert. Well, kind of. Only three places are going to Orange—the financial centers of New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. But then some reporter asked

Of the eight candidates for Wayne Nishiki’s County Council seat representing South Maui—all of which appeared at the ‘Ohana Coalition’s talk story session last night in Kihei—the Coalition opted for continuity by endorsing seven-year Nishiki aide Michelle Anderson… According to today’s New York Times, that whole New York terror alert thing was based on information the Bush Administration knew to be at least three years old. Go figure. MTW

American Greatness Is found in the strangest places It all started when I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 with my mom. It was shortly before July 4. I had wanted to spend time in Makawao celebrating the nation’s birthday, but I had to leave for Europe to get some work done. There was a full moon over Waikiki as our plane climbed into the black sky. And I was thinking about the story of the Bush family’s connections to the Bin Laden clan on my mind, I left Hawaii. But I also couldn’t stop wondering about the reasons for American greatness. I sat down in my seat and heard the movie selection. It was Hidalgo, which thrilled my seatmate. I politely nodded, but had no idea what the movie was about. Through the story of a race across the desert, the Viggo Mortensen character finds his national identity by sharing with other indigenous peoples around the world who cherish his culture. That really got me thinking. On the Fourth of July, there is little or no recognition of the people who lived here before the Americans. It is all about the founding fathers and wisdom, with no credit given

to the model of democracy adopted by the Iroquois confederacy. On the Fourth or any other day, there is little reflection on the killing and destruction committed in the name of progress and development that went into building this great nation. The massacre of Wounded Knee can’t be forgotten, as I mentioned to my seatmate. She noted—with the wisdom of an indigenous women raised around the American Indian Movement learning about human rights violations—the power and positive influence of spirituality and cultural cosmology in self-awareness and nation pride. I appreciated the movie so much I watched it again later, focusing on the features of fundamental freedoms streaking across the screen along with the Spotted Mustang. I had a stopover in Washington D.C. An old friend of mine picked me up, and soon we were headed to the Freedom Park. There I saw the actual door from the Birmingham Jail cell where Martin Luther King, Jr. once stayed and wrote a speech. Out for a Golden Duck Playing Cricket on Maui It’s Saturday afternoon and Uday Kari and his buddies are at Baldwin Beach Park. They make up the “Maui Cricket Club,” a group of guys who play one of the oldest sports in history. The Honolulu Cricket club, for instance, dates back to 1893. In fact, historic documents show that club is the oldest sporting organization in the Pacific. Cricket was also played on the Big Island, in the early 20th Century, probably introduced by Scottish engineers who worked for the sugar companies. The game seems similar to baseball, but every Cricket player will insist they’re very different. “Cricket is almost like playing chess,” says Matt Lachal, an Australian who is Batter up, kind of glad he can play cricket here on Maui. “Tactics are so important, you chose the Soon, Cumberhatch and Moghaddam were fielders positions carefully and evaluate joined by Kari, from India, the Australians Lachal each batsman’s and bowlers specialities.” and Hugh Stott, Wahkimba Mills from St. Kitts Teams bat in successive innings and and the Egyptian-Indian Moe Sears. Hitchin’ a Ride

Wahkimba of the Virgin Islands

Barukh Shalev thumbs his way around Maui The woman was adamant. “You’re not wearing your seatbelt,” she told me after I hopped in the car. “Oh, yeah, sorry,” I mumbled to the woman, trying and failing to figure the device. “How have you been, anyway?” she asked, like we are old friends reunited. We glided smoothly out of Paia, this new friend and I. But a little later I noticed her staring at me. I tried to look at her without looking at her, carefully edging my eyes, then my nose over to meet her contemptuous glare. “Your not Lance’s son are you?” she said as if having been betrayed. “Unfortunately not,” I replied carefully. “Well, well, we’re gonna have to just let you out right about here,” she said patiently, in the way one would scold a stubborn child. She stopped the car at Ho’okipa. So began my hitchhiking adventure. Unable to sleep that morning, I got up at 5 a.m. and decided to thumb a ride from Paia to Ulupalakua via Hana, Kaupo and Haiku. I had nothing to lose, nowhere to be and thoughts in my head that needed considering. Hitchhiking would give me time to think. Yeah, thinking. I was thinking a lot standing there, abandoned in Ho’okipa. There was a road cleanup crew sweeping the side of the road. In between cars I asked the guy nearest me what the weirdest thing he found on the road was. “All kine” he said, shrugging. “Evryting. Dead cat, dead dog, dead baby. All kine!”

It was now about 7 a.m. People driving past were sure serious about their car stickers. Gomes Gurl cruised past in a sporty Acura sittin’ on rims, You Can’t Be Me rolled by in a black Escalade. Maui Built sputtered by in an old pickup truck and Samoan Strength and Tongan Pride both grinned and shot me hearty shakas, but didn’t stop. Ainokea drove by indifferently in a black pickup, clearly not caring. No Jesus, No Peace wouldn’t even look at me. Moments later I was picked up by Phillip, an Australian handyman who is building his home in Haiku. “You have to do what you can to eat around here,” he said cryptically as he drops me off at the Maui Home Grown Market. There I perused the

ads on the bulletin board and learned I can “Experience the power of Qi with Dr Zhiang Yong Xiang!” and “Explore the Feminine Mysteries with Divine Feminine Inc!” If I am not up for all that exploration I can engage in “Organic Laughter with Swami Beyondananda” or purchase “for the first time on Maui” a contraption called The Gynotron. In the parking lot I hustled a ride from Dorgee, a Tibetan from Daharmsala driving a red pickup truck. Dorgee’s wife is an American whom he had met in India, where she was a tourist and he led trekking expeditions. She is also a documentary filmmaker and is working on a film where, as Dorgee explains it, “Youths discuss the world.” The title of the movie will be called The Buddha Future. After being dropped off at Twin Falls, I met a bearded, emaciated hitchhiker who looked absurdly like a leprechan. Although he refused to give me his name, I’d seen him before, on Little Beach running up and down the sand wearing nothing but a jock strap. Now he was sporting a little more clothing: spandex shorts, converse hightops and black socks. As soon as I was in earshot, he launched into a breathless soliloquy about hitchhiking: “The most enigmatic time I ever hitchhiked was from Jericho to Jerusalem where I bought a baby GOAT,” he told me. “I bought the baby goat and tried to... travel with it. I accidentally passed through some Israeli CHECKPOINTS, passed through the machine guns and BARBED wire and ended up in a refugee camp. The PALESTINIANS starting shouting ‘Yahood, yahood’ [Arabic for Jew]…” At this point I couldn’t keep up writing this monologue and noticed that his shorts and biblical beard made him look like a renegade, though athletic, Hasidic Jew. “The Arabs were throwing ROCKS and hitting the GOAT and I was buggin’ out trying to save the GOAT,” he said. “Because every Bob Dylan song, every Bob Dylan song, is about being FREE, man. It’s like, what are you NOT doing when you’re at home being a couch potato, what are you NOT doing when you’re wrapped up in tin foil cooking like a potato in an oven? Soon, what we are gonna be able to do, see, is GALACTIC hitchhiking, where like,

we can go to different planets and a higher plane of REALITY.” I decided to walk for a while. Further down the road, I came across a Hari-Krishna in billowing pajamas. I began to ask him a question but he shot his hand up and said, in a perfect Oxfordshire accent, “I will not be an appropriate conversation for you.” Then he moped away, pj’s flapping like the white flag of surrender. My next ride was Wahkimba, a dreadlocked Rasta from the Virgin Islands. As we were driving, a flock of birds dove in the path of his vehicle. “Shit, mon” he said, shaking his head, “I hit de buud.” I nodded, confusing the botanical for the zoological. “De buuds put demselves were ever dey feel like.” He dropped me off on Door of Faith Road, next to the entrance sign and a massive pile of trash on the side of the road. This Pyramid of Refuse was inexplicable. A kennel of feral dogs and cats scavenged for food amidst the vile heap. Repelled by the smell, I walked down the street, thumbing passing cars. It wasn’t long before Guillermo and Cesar from Puerto Rico picked me up. As soon as I hopped in the back seat, one of the guys thrusted a bottle of beer at me. On we went, Cesar driving in a fast-slow swooping way past the lazy curves of the Hana Highway. Momentarily forgetting the morbidity of drunk-driving Puerto Ricans on Hana Highway in a scandalously ratty Chevette with no seatbelts, we raucously talked about el barrio, Puerto Rican girls and cocaine. They took me as far as Huelo Point, where I bought water from sullen and pouty French-Canadian teenagers, Genevieve, 18 and Dominique, 17. “We come ‘ear for ze summair,” Dominique told me while I drank my water. A Chinese man was seriously interested in the coconuts. Genevieve awkwardly tried to cut one open with a machete but the effect was more comical than effective. But Chinese Guy, impatient with her incompetence, commandeered the blade and expertly delivered the deathblow, sending the coconut and coconut shrapnel flying. I moved on. Eventually, a clean-cut guy in sunglasses in a SUV picked me up.

Guillermo & Cesar from Puerto Rico “You like hitchin?’” he asked over the house music playing on his stereo. “Lotta people pickin’ you up?” “Yep.” “Good,” he said, sounding quite pleased, “I’m the senator who made it legal to hitchhike in this state. I’m Senator Kalani English. We got it passed as an energy conservation issue. Most of the opposition stemmed from the ‘hippie element’ that people feared hitchhiking would bring, not really hitchhiking in and of itself.” English, who represents Hana, East Maui, Upcountry, Molokai, Lanai and Kaho’olawe, told me though hitching became illegal in 1968, it didn’t really stop much. As long as there have been cars, there have been people hitching in Hawaii. When Kalani and his colleagues got the bill passed in 1998, it was simply a legal recognition of a local custom. Some weren’t so thrilled. A woman in English’s 6th District called him to complain that since the bill was passed, she feels “obligated to pick up her neighbors.” “Sounded to me like she had a problem with her neighbors, not with hitchhiking,” Kalani told me, laughing. As the senator drove like a daredevil through the windy road, we talked about Tongan Jews, Micronesian independence, architecture, Paul Theroux, history, classic literature and war. Normally, I would have gotten out after a few minutes—a diversity of rides makes the trip more interesting—but I liked talking with him, and rode with him all the way to Hana. “Come by the house, I’ll feed you,” English said as he dropped me off. Passing through the Hana Hotel where employees zipped hither and tither in golf carts, I eventually got a ride from Phillip and his bible. Phillip was a singer. You can see him and his guitar performing every

day—“except Tuesday,” he told me—at Banyan Tree Park in Lahaina, bellowing tunes and clutching a bible. A bumper sticker on his dashboard said, “It’s all about me—God.” “Hana is the heart of Maui, you see,” he said pointing out the window and not watching the road. “You see, the heart, thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus.” Before dropping me off, he also asked me to come in and eat with him and his family. I declined, since it was getting late and I had to move on. As I walked away, he said he loved me. Heading from Hamoa Bay, I walked and walked. Eventually I reached Nalani and her bible. She had just opened a shave ice stand, Ka’awaloa’s Shave Ice. “Can I bless you with a shave ice?” she asked. Who was I to refuse absolution through dessert? I thanked her, took the shave ice and moved on. A Volkswagen bug drove by but did not pick me up. “That person’s hippie license should be revoked,” I said out loud.

When you are a hitchhiker, you don’t fit. Tourists are a private club, trooping around the world from one glass-walled Ka’anapali or Wailea to the next. Tourists come from places where people fit, have a history, family name, address and dog. Those who lack these symbols of affluence and belonging don’t fit. Those people are a danger. Much of American culture is built around fear. It’s a society of Unsolved Mysteries, America’s Most Wanted, latchkey kids, kidnapper vans and dangerous strangers. Fear is business, entertainment and titillation. Hitchhikers are dropouts—what mainstream society fears most of all. Tourists in rental cars quickly became my nemesis on the journey. Like an army of invaders driving yellow Jeeps, white Sebrings and orange Mustangs, they

cruised by, indifferent and aloof. I began to despise those people, cursing their stupid visors and “Jesus is my Homeboy” tshirts. Then one square-jawed man in reflective wrap-around sunglasses stopped his Jeep with a screeching halt. “Question,” he said. “Have we passed by the Seven Sacred Pools?” “No, I don’t know,” I told him. “But I have a guidebook, if you let me ride there with you, I’ll let you use it.” “Naw, I don’t think so.” He peeled out, leaving me in his exhaust. What felt like days later, I was finally picked up, at 4 p.m., by two crew-cut lesbians. Sunshine was a dance instructor from San Francisco. Alexandra was a busty psychotherapist from Greek Cyprus whose hair was so black it looked blue. Her severe accent made her sound like Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle. A couple blocks later, I was alone again, just past the pools of O’heo gulch, which the tourists call Seven Sacred Pools. There is no shade, and it doesn’t help that the beers and shave ice are beginning to dehydrate me. A man and his small daughter riding a horse lazily galloped past me. Then a car full of Rastafarians rolled by in a black SUV. The car pulled to the side, then the dreadlocked men filed out and investigated me. Two small white and very blond girls followed, looking confused. As we talked, the girls stood mesmerized in slack-jawed admiration of the Rastas. One of the girls wore a little tiny backpack that looked utterly suburban and useless. As they departed, one of the Rastas hugged me. “Next level,” he said. In my case, the next level came in the form of Glaucia Mourao and her yellow Volkswagen bug. She had black hair, a caramel complexion, light eyes, dramatic cheekbones and thick lips,

similiar to Chechens I had seen in Turkey, or Gypsies in Paris. It was all exotic and heartbreakingly gorgeous. “Good luck?” she asked with an unplaceable accent. “Yeah, man, lots,” I stammered. “You wouldn’t believe the people that picked me up—a Senator, a Tibetan guy, some lesbians…” “Braz-ew gorl,” she interrupted, winking flirtatiously. Glaucia was a bodyboarder from Recife on a surfing vacation. Having overstayed her visa, she told me she has to return home. As we cruised towards Kaupo, I decided to celebrate my good luck with a joint. It seemed to fit the theme: yellow Volkswagen, Hawaii, pretty girl, hitchhiking, joint. “Jew are smoking dese tings? Yes, I like,” she said, green eyes lighting up. She looked almost regal in her maroon head wrap and chunky earrings. As the tiny bug filled with smoke, the song “Electric Avenue” came in faintly on the radio. We turned it up and sang much too loudly. Heading further into Kaupo, I reluctantly decided that it was time for me to leave Miss Mourao and her yellow Volkswagen. After she made me promise I will visit her in Brazil, I began to walk again. I felt free and happy. Kaupo is a Tolkienesqe netherworld that reminds me of a place condemned souls go to languish. It has a rugged dignity that takes time to fully appreciate. On the coast I watched fishermen cast nets into the rocky shoreline. A mongoose darted across the road, carrying one of its infants in its mouth. As I continued forward, I noticed a litter of mongooses, newborns, blind and running in tiny circles. Without the guidance of the mother, these baby mongooses were helpless and confused, mewing

loudly. I flashed on the idea of taking one home and raising it as a pet, but thought better of the idea and let them be. Maui is rather small, but I was stunned at how endless Kaupo seemed, the road cutting a gray ribbon through the barren hills. After a few minutes, I came upon a herd of cattle. As I approached, they simply stared at me, almost sarcastically. One bovine had a small white bird perched on the top of its head. The sun began to set. The thought of getting stuck out there all night seemed an ill proposition. The first car that passed, driven by a grinning, aging hippie named Dave, stopped for me. But I disliked him immediately. “I’m the only deadhead who’s ever been hit by a train,” were the first words out of his mouth. And he sounded genuinely pleased with himself. “It was in northern California back in the ‘70s, and I went out to piss and had to walk over a train trestle,” he said. “Well, what do you know but the train came. I hung off the side of the trestle. Those were the days, man.” The sunlight reflecting off his eyeglasses made little pools of light on his face. Up, up, up we went, toward Ulupalakua. I began to enjoy the road. Driving almost like traveling on air, with marvelous dips and curves, the yellow median line appearing to squiggle around hypnotically. Cattle guards rang out Cla-CLANK as we hit them. The sound comforted me. The air began to cool as we arrived Upcountry, which was his destination and mine. His ride turned out to be my last on my hitchhiking trip. It took me 10 rides and 11 hours. As I got out, I noticed Dave’s air freshener. It had a crude drawing of a cat, wearing sunglasses and a tie, playing a saxophone. “In a world of copycats,” it said, “be an original.” MTW

Elizabeth McHugh Flower girl for CJ’s Maui Flower Service I was sitting at the hostel with $10 to my name—because I spend so much time at the beach—and I saw an ad in the newspaper for a flower girl. In Maui, apparently you can manifest whatever you want and it’ll come to you. But my friend told me when it comes to getting a job you need to be more proactive. So I called and got an interview. I go from restaurant to restaurant and sell people gorgeous leis and flowers from Hawaii. We have carnation leis, tuberose, plumeria, ahihi, crown flowers and orchids. I love my boss. He always reminds us it doesn’t matter how much we sell, it’s all about the flowers. I walk around smiling at everyone. Flowers sell themselves. When people want a flower they just wave me over. When you see a couple truly in love, “lei”ing each other, the love in their eyes is beautiful. The kiss they give each other right then makes me feel really good, because I was a catalyst for that to happen. The saddest thing about being a flower girl is when people avoid my smile. They don’t want to look at me because they think I’m trying to force them to buy flowers. They don’t understand I want to smile at everyone. I don’t even mind if you just smell the leis and take my time. I honestly love my job. I can’t sell things I don’t believe in or work for people I don’t care about, because I’m making them money. It’s nice being a flower girl. All I really have to afford is yoga, gas, food and rent. Surf and love are free. MTW

DJ Radar Thursday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s in Kihei; Friday, 10 p.m. at Casanova in Makawao An innovative DJ from Arizona, Radar is best known throughout the turntablist community for utilizing his classical training to write sheet music or “scratch notation” for his musical compositions, even performing as a DJ with an 80-piece symphony orchestra. Concerto for the Turntable? Okay, whoa. DJs are no hacks these days. It’s not just “wicky-wicky-wicky” anymore, you know? I mean, just check out this over-achieving DJ Radar’s numerous awards: 2001 URB Magazine’s Next 100 (scratch notation) 2000 Arizona Republic’s Best DJ 1999 Spin Magazine - 9th Turntablist in the World 1999 Arizona Repbulic’s Best DJ (Bombshelter DJ’s) 1999 New Times Best of Phoenix 1998 Arizona Republic’s Best DJ 1998 New Times Best of Phoenix 1997 URB Magazine’s Next 100 (Bombshelter Dj’s) 1996 New Times Best of Phoenix And that’s not all! When he’s not traveling the world doing DJ shows, collaborating with his Bombshelter DJ crew or working on his orchestra project, Radar also performs with a jazz trio in Arizona—just a turntable and keyboard, with various guest musicians doing upright bass or horns, etc. Plus, there’s the concert at Carnegie Hall in 2005… I asked Radar if he’s had time to relax on Maui with all this activity. He laughed and said he’s been enjoying the beaches, the clear water—but he might have to fly out early on Tuesday. Why? Oh, just to film a little Vin Diesel blockbuster in L.A. that features a DJ truck with turntables that he designed, you know, in his spare time. Geez… I feel so lazy all of a sudden. Radar said he’s also just looking forward to having fun and opening minds at the Hapa’s and Casanova shows this week. “To us [the Bombshelter crew]—we like to shock our crowd and open up them to different types of music. I play drum ‘n bass, hip-hop, rock… I don’t set any boundaries with my music. I play all genres. Music is universal—it’s just separated by different tempos.” [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Surf Fever Signing Friday, 6-9 p.m. at Borders in Kahului [BOOK] Everybody knows that nothing exists until the media says so. And in 1960, Jim Severson started the world of surf culture as we know it, with Surfer Magazine. A surfer and artist from San Clemente, California, Severson provided a steady stream of surf paintings and photography in the ‘50s, even creating some of the first surf films, like Surf Safari and Big Wednesday. It was in promotion for one of these films that Severson put together a 36-page magazine called The Surfer with photos, a short fiction article, a map of surf breaks and a how-to article for beginning surfers. He later sold the magazine in ’71 and moved to Maui with his family in a return to painting, sketching and surfing. Eventually, Severson was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame in ’91 and was ranked sixth in Surfer Magazine’s ’99 list of the “25 Most Influential Surfers of the Century.” And on Friday, you can meet this seminal surf media giant, as Severson signs his new book, Surf Fever, which spans six decades of surf photography.

High Noon at the Drive-In Friday, 6 p.m., Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao [MOVIE] What could be better than watching Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in the greatest western of all time? Watching it outside in the comfort of your own car! Oh, the magic of the drive-in—listening to the dialogue over an FM radio, spilling Root Beer on the dash, spying on a couple of teenagers gettin’ it on in the car next to you. And it’s High Noon! Written when screenwriters were getting blacklisted for alleged Communist ties, the movie stars Cooper as a sheriff who has to fight dangerous gunmen alone after the rest of the town chickens out and Kelly as his young bride who just wants to live in peace. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Dolphins in the Sand Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to noon at Keawakapu Beach in Wailea [ S A N D S C U L P TURE CONTEST] Ooh, goodie—dolphins! It’s time to show your love of the ever-popular, mystical, peaceful, playfully leaping, “smiling” dolphin! How do you show your adoration? With sand sculpture, of course! And there’s categories like “Most Realistic Dolphin,” “Most Humorous Dolphin Sculpture,” “Capturing the Spirit of Wild Dolphins”… wait a minute—“Capturing the Spirit of Wild Dolphins?”… Did you ever see that one really violent Simpsons episode where Lisa frees a dolphin from the Marine Park, but it’s actually the king of the dolphins, and all the dolphins are plotting to take over the Earth and enact bloody siege upon the humans in retribution for putting them in sea amusement parks? Yeah, that was scary. But wild dolphins?… Nah, they’re happy and playful, right?… right?!!

Theistic Punk Presence of Absence… of Void

Tuesday, 7 p.m. at the Castle Theater in Kahului

Saturday, 6:30 p.m. at Hope Chapel in Kihei [MUSIC] Absence of Void (see photo) is a conscious punk rock band from Maui who went to California and is now back, doing a homecoming concert—the only one for the rest of the year—this weekend. The name Absence of Void also just a really cool spiritual idea: “There is a state of complete absence, and there is also absence of the awareness of absence. There is no one and nothing there. And there is nobody there to be aware that there’s nobody and there’s nothing – complete absence of consciousness. That is the most awakened state.” (A.H. Almaas, Diamond Heart Book 4: Indestructible Innocence, p 127) Ooh, deep! But aside from that, other Maui punk, emo, hardcore, rock and reggae bands like Gomega, Empty Handed and Fire Never Fading will perform, as well as the Oregon band that’ll be opening for Blink-182 on Maui—Pennylane. All for only $5! For more info or directions, call 879-3853.

DAY

Onion Eating Contest! Sunday, 3 p.m., Maui Whaler’s Village in Ka’anapali [FOOD] Since the dawn of time, men have longed to compete in glorious combat against each other. Some men fought in hand-to-hand combat. Some men engaged in sport or some other physical exertion. And some men, the mightiest of the mighty, won glory by eating large quantities of food really fast. Now, this weekend, you can see two of those men—Eric “Badlands” Booker (pictured above) and Eric “The Onion King” Seigmund—engage in the 15th Annual Maui Onion Festival Onion Eating Contest. The competitors are ranked fourth and first, respectively, by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), which is the main governing body in the world of consuming stuff for sport. Which man will prevail? How many onions will he ultimately ram down his throat? And most importantly, why are both men named Eric? The 15th Annual Maui Onion Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ka’anapali’s Whaler’s Village. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

[MUSIC] Hey, it’s not only about Jack, you know! Up-and-coming singer/songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter is the talented opening guy of choice for Jack Johnson this Tuesday. Much like Johnson, Frankenreiter is a lifelong surfer. He actually learned guitar and played music with Johnson as a young fellow when he rented a room at Johnson’s parents’ home in Oahu’s North Shore. Just this year, Donavon released his debut album, which was recorded at the Mango Tree in Hawaii, on Johnson’s Brushfire Records label. Recently, he has toured with Johnson as well as G. Love & Special Sauce and Dave Matthews.

Collateral

★★★★★

Not your usual farce From an international perspective of hip action movies, Collateral hits the highest watermark with ease. But for its cool collection of genre bending surprises and fast twitch use of irony and character study, the movie recedes into Hollywood cliches for its final reel. Jada Pinkett Smith’s character is the last hit on Vincent’s list, and Max must become equal to Vincent in order to save her life. The long game of cat-and-mouse must necessarily end with a mouse that outgrows its razor-sharp assailant. Jamie Foxx delivers the goods, and Tom Cruise is intoxicating in a cruel role that runs closest to his black clad pussy master in Magnolia. Cruise never overreaches, as he did in The Last Samurai, because the scope of Vincent’s character is finite and collapsible. MTW

Max pleading his inability to be a party to Vincent’s agenda of planned carnage. The movie edges toward humorous satire as Vincent professes his obscure existential beliefs to our unnerved protagonist, who has just added a corpse as a trunk passenger in his taxi. The intensity of the movie builds as Vincent quickly reveals more of his cold-blooded nature. A brief visit to a popular jazz club turns especially sour when Vincent uses his real and imagined knowledge of jazz to pull off his next hit. Collateral hits high gear in a flashy and chilling bloodletting that occurs inside an Asian techno nightclub where Vincent, and consequently Max, become the center of attention for cops, Feds, surprised patrons, crime bosses and the targets of Vincent’s bloody assignment.

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA

Castle Theater, 572-3456 Super Size Me - Unrated - Wed 5 & 7:30 pm

MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX

Wednesday, August 11 Super Size Me 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater "Riveting and darkly comic Super Size Me is a whipsmart documentary" (USA Today). Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, winner of the Sundance Film Festival Director's Award, risked his life, even though his doctors ordered him to stop eating at McDonalds when their food sent his vital signs into the danger zone, to make this film that Premiere Magazine described as "made with obvious passion and humor (and a side of fries). Super Size Me is a mostly entertaining look at fast food, the billion-dollar businesses behind it, and its warped effect on our culture." In plain English...no subtitles necessary.. hold the mayo! Unrated. 96 min.

Before it all goes to hell

New This Week COLLATERAL - (R) - Crime/Thriller - This Michael Mann film stars Jamie Foxx as a washed-up comedy writer-turned cabbie and Tom Cruise as a pontificating assassin. The movie takes place over one night as Foxx drives Cruise around from hit to hit. People get killed, Foxx delivers a few one-liners, and then everyone looks slick and stylish as they chase each other through L.A. Also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith. See Film Critique. LITTLE BLACK BOOK (PG13) Comdey/Romance - Brittany Murphy stars as an associate producer for a daytime talk show who gets frustrated when her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) won’t talk about his past relationships. Geez, usually you can’t get them to shut up about them! Anyway, using the show’s resources, she seeks out and interviews his exes and typically, finds out more than she wanted to.

Now Showing A CINDERELLA STORY - PG - Teen/Romantic Comedy - Another fable-filled fantasy about a super cute and really nice high school chick (Hilary Duff) who is tortured by her tacky stepmom and catty, low-self-esteem-compensating, jealous stepsisters, while she covets her online Prince Charming, the popular quarterback with the secret sensitive side. Will he find the cell phone she left behind just before the clock strikes midnight? ANCHORMAN - (PG) - Comedy - The pretty much always funny Will Ferrell plays Ron Burgandy, a know-nothing know-it-all TV news anchorman in San Diego who’s all comfy in his burgundy blazer and full-on 1970s moustache until a new, intelligent reporter—played by the lovely and talented Christina Applegate (Kelly Bundy, to you Married with Children fans)— threatens to take his job and kicking while in the act of jumping, we’re guessing the studio strayed a bit from Verne’s original storyline. THE BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an exAmerican assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. CAT WOMAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Halle Berry stars in the telling of the popular DC Comics anti-heroine of a lady in a tight, black, leather bodysuit. The story of Catwoman starts with a rather timid woman who, by twist of fate, is granted the amazing powers of the feline— self-cleaning and mouse-catching notwithstanding. She also encounters villains and villainesses (here, deliciously portrayed by Sharon Stone), as well as a complicated love interest (hellooo, Benjamin Bratt!). But hey, let’s face it, this movie is all about the cat suit. DE-LOVELY - (PG13) - Drama - A musical biopic on American songwriting legend Cole Porter (Kevin Kline). A deeply paradoxical man—he

loved his wife (Ashley Judd) very much, but engaged in more than a few homosexual affairs—Porter found the time to write classic after classic as though it were no more difficult than ordering lunch. More musical than many musicals, the movie also includes contemporary artists like Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Cole and others belting out Porter’s best hits their way. DODGEBALL (PG13) - Ben Stiller (Zoolander) is the hilarious head of a big fitness palace that threatens to overtake a small local gym. Vince Vaughn (Swingers) leads a group of social misfits to battle the big evil corporate of narcissism in an epic game of, well, Dodgeball. HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (PG13) - Comedy - A corporate dude (John Cho) and his medical school pal (Kal Penn) smoke a lot of pot one night and then decide to drive through late night New Jersey searching for White Castle hamburgers, which are these little square hamburgers they sell on the East Coast that are supposed to be really good but are, in fact, too small and bland to provide any real sustenance. Anyhoo, hilarity ensues, which is unusual because the guy who played Doogie Howser co-stars as himself. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Third in the Harry Potter dynasty of children’s books, this storyline evolves around Harry’s inability to tame the beast within him, as he goes on the run, not realizing that he is also being chased by a renegade wizard played by sexy master villain Gary Oldman (hello? Bram Stoker’s Dracula?). I, ROBOT - PG-13 - Science Fiction/Adventure - This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. Based on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s classic collection of short stories of the same name, the movie follows Smith’s detective character as he tries to prove a robot violated its basic programming and willingly committed a crime. Also stars hottie Bridget Moynahan. KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. With Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - R - Political Thriller Denzel Washington plays an American Gulf War vet whose strange dreams a decade after the war ended lead him to believe he and his squad were kidnapped and brainwashed as part of some conspiracy to take over the U.S. government. Hey, wait, that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, it was this other movie called… The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra and that woman from Murder, She Wrote. I loved that film. You people suck. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep. THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and

woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? RIDING GIANTS - (PG13) - Documentary - The complete breakdown on the hows, whys and all-important whos of big wave surfing—guys like Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton who’ve made names for themselves towing behind jet skis into monster waves at places like Mavericks in California and our own Peahi (aka Jaws). Helmed by Stacy Peralta of Dogtown and Z-Boys fame, the film has all the makings of a surf classic. SHREK 2 - (PG) - Animation - This green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and live in swamp with their donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas) so that the princess can be freed up to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what is she thinking?! SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). THUNDERBIRDS - PG - Action/Adventure - What is this, the season of unwanted remakes? How dare someone remake one of my favorite cartoons ever, with Liono and Snarf battling that evil mummy Mum-Ra… oh, wait, that was Thundercats. Oh yeah, Thunderbirds—that really, really long miniseries on that priest who gets it on that starred that guy who just came out of the closet. What was his name… Richard Crenna? Richard Harris? Richard Chamberlain! Yeah, why would someone want to… That was The Thornbirds? Oh. So what was the Thunderbirds? Some British 1960s puppet show where these guys flew around in bitchen spaceships and rescued people? Cool! Stars Bill Paxton, Ben Kingsley and a bunch of kids. THE VILLAGE - PG - Drama/Romance/Science Fiction/Fantasy/Thriller - Geez, throw in “Comedy” and it’s a film for everybody! And I thought it was just the latest creepy flick by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs)! But I guess that’s where the “Romance” comes in. So this movie is about a village (hence the title) with a close-knit community (hence the “Drama”) who go through their normal routine, knowing that evil creatures reside in the surrounding forest (ahem, “Science FictionThriller”). There is one town rebel, though, who ventures into the woods and pisses every one off (oh, that’s gotta be Joaquin Phoenix!). Also stars William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Adrien Brody. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned.

Heard from the Kona coast to Oahu’s North Shore.

Women have always played an important role in the preservation of African culture and are important bearers of tradition. This compilation of emotive songs features Africa’s most popular singers, and represents diverse styles from all over the continent. Angelique Kidjo is the most well known here because of her collaborations with Dave Matthews and Carlos Santana. On “Bahia” she celebrates the connection between the music of West Africa and Brazil. Maria de Barros of Cape Verde sings in the style of her famous godmother, Cesaria Evora. South African singers are well represented here. Sibongile Khumalo is one of the country’s most popular vocalists and sang at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration. Even remote Madagascar shares its music here. Tarika modernizes the traditional, while using typical instruments that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. This disc definitely demonstrates the power of African women everywhere. — 2004 Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

MON-FRI 11AM-2AM SAT-SUN 8AM-2AM

“NUEVO LATINO” Putumayo puts out an album a month, and this is my favorite one in a year. It compiles the best of the cutting edge Latin performers of South America and Europe. The language doesn’t matter, it all rocks and moves. Raul Paz, a young Cuban singer-songwriter, waxes about the free-spirited “Mulata” at the club who dances with abandon, but will get you in a big mess (“tremendo lio”). Jarabe de Palo, one of Spain’s most famous singer-songwriters, mixes the Blues with flamenco on “El Lado Oscuro.” Federico Aubele, from Argentina, offers up a really trippy Tango/electronica tune, “Postales.” The NYC based Brazilian trio, Mosquitos, comes through with the best track, a sultry, loungy Bossa Nova, with a Velvet Underground twist. Colombia’s Aterciopelados, which features my favorite voice in the Spanish language, is here too. — 2004 Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “GREECE – A MUSICAL ODYSSEY” Just in time for the Olympics in Athens, Putumayo releases a superb collection of traditional and popular Greek music. Greece has been a cultural crossroads for a millennia and so, naturally, its music is a magnificent blend of the sounds of the Mediterranean, the Balkans, North Africa and Central Asia. “Rembetika” has become the Greek Blues, a genre arising in the 20th century that combines many influences and is now the foundation of most Greek popular music. Also appearing here are “Demotica” and “Entehno,” sophisticated, gorgeous traditional music, as well as “Laiko,” the ubiquitous cheesy Greek pop. Many of the artists here are big stars, like George Dalaras, the Bob Dylan of Greece. Rising stars and GreekAmerican musicians are also here. Passionate vocalists, lyres, lutes, flutes, guitars and accordions characterize this stylized and artful blend of traditional Greek music and popular forms. —2004 Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “THE BIG LEBOWSKI” Just like Rushmore, The Big Lebowski helped open the door for independent films, allowing the future projects to be blockbusters—The Royal Tennebaums and O Brother, Where Art Thou, for instance—but only because these films were super cool on a budget, making the most of what they had. The moral: Style points are weighed the heaviest in the end. Why bestowth this crown of “super cool?” 1) It’s filled with rare gems from the dynasty of those deemed “dOpe” (yes, capital “Oh!”): Henry Mancini, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Yma Sumac; 2) It stretches your palate by dropping incredible music from “uncool” genres, i.e. opera, new-wave ‘80s, cheesy pop (that’s a genre, no?); 3) A cover of the overplayed “Hotel California” that helps me forget—much like The Dude—“I just hate the f**king Eagles, man.” —’98 Polygram Records [K. BRADLEY LENZ] Got Music? If you’d like to share your thoughts on a great or not-so-hot CD you just bought, it’s show and tell time here at Maui Time Weekly! Renaissance Dude Going on and on about Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson For more information about Kokua Hawai‚i, contact the Kokua Hawaii Foundation at PO Box 866, Haleiwa, HI 96712 or email info@kokuahawaiifoundation.org; Jack Johnson appears with Donavon Frankenreiter on Aug. 10 at the MACC’s Castle Theater. Tickets are all sold out. So what’s the story? Why are all the kids—from eight to 88—all a-twitter over this North Shore surfer and his acoustic guitar? Well, I’ll tell you. I had the pleasure of chatting with the esteemed Mr. Johnson right before he flew off for a two-week tour in Japan, where, apparently, they’ve gone gaga, too. Turns out the reason we’re all loving Jack so much is because he deserves it. To whit: the proceeds from his sold-out MACC performance will benefit the Hawaii Kokua Project. When I asked him about the project, I expected a sort of canned answer. I figured the environmental organization approached him and he agreed to help out. No way. “We formed the project to try to bring as much environmental awareness and education into the public schools as possible,” he said. We? “My wife, Kim, my friend, Crystal—a classmate from Sunset Elementary School—and I go into the public schools and help start recycling programs, help plant organic gardens and, you know, I go into classes and sing with the kids, teach them songs,” he said. “You remember that song ‘Three is the Magic Number‚’ from Schoolhouse Rock? Well, I rewrote it using the three R’s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” He went into great detail about how the

project has grown to include most North Shore schools. He expressed some concern that they might be getting too ambitious, hoping the program might take on a life of its own and branch out to other islands. While I listened and learned, I realized this is the way Jack Johnson lives. This is what he DOES. I was truly inspired. “It’s really neat when someone sees something from seed to fruit,” he told me. Amen. To top it all off, he told me all the proceeds from the Maui performance will be set aside for future Kokua Foundation projects right here on Maui. I asked if starting the project and being in such an organic state of mind had affected his music. His latest album On and On has a much deeper, thematic vibe than 2001’s Brushfire Fairytales. “Yeah,” he said. “Definitely. I kinda write on the bits and pieces of life and the process of it all.” The process, for Jack Johnson, includes evolving into the role of new father. He and Kim have a five and a half month old and Daddy’s new repertoire includes a ditty called “Banana Pancakes.” When I asked if he’d ever be seduced by the trappings of celebrityhood and leave us for the glitz and glam of the mainland, he answered with an adamant “NO WAY.” He plans his

Jack Johnson sings “Banana Pancakes” tours during the summer not because it’s the traditional concert season, but because “it’s flat.” If you don’t know what he’s talking about, well, maybe you oughta ditch out for the mainland. After an injury took him off the pro circuit, Jack Johnson kept surfing, but turned some of his attention to documentary film-making (which he studied at UC Santa Barbara) and music. He and friends Chris and Emmett Molloy produced critically acclaimed Thicker than Water, then Jack teamed with Kelly Slater to make September Sessions. His surf films reflect the visceral nature of surfing, its silent power, the way the sport connects

the surfer not only to the ocean, but to the earth and the universe. But it was the unique background music in the films which catapulted the Renaissance dude into the stratosphere. Soon, Johnson was jamming with G. Love and Special Sauce and sitting in with the venerable Ben Harper. Since then, Johnson’s two CDs have been smoldering slowly, gaining him more and more of a following. A couple years ago he was playing with Uncle Willie K. at the Hard Rock in Lahaina, now he’s selling out the Castle Theater in record time, “warming the stage” as he puts it for the likes of Neil Young, and improving the planet one note at a time. Frankie Sez... This week on ‘North Shore’

So Nicole and Morgan didn’t get eloped because Mr. Booth—aka Dad—showed up and then MJ and Chris got some. Frankie couldn’t get sleep but got some with dad’s girlfriend and got caught kissing her. Morgan harassed Tessa and got a premarital black eye, then Dad harassed Jason to betray Vincent, but then Jason got some with Tessa. Nicole walked out on her dad and Morgan at the altar and in on Tessa and Jason so now Mr. Booth hates Frankie. Now Vincent considers Jason his son, Nicole is all alone and Monique asks, “Who does a girl have to sleep with to get a drink around here?” Why, Frankie of course—he’s the bartender!

It seems everyone’s talking about Jack. “Jack this!” and “Jack that!” People are frantically scrambling to snag tickets to his upcoming show at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) on Aug. 10, suddenly becoming Serious Patrons of the Arts—even becoming MACC members—to acquire the much-coveted “advance sales” seats, screaming down Haleakala Highway to get to the box office before every single seat sold out (oh yeah, that was me. I’ll be the one standing waaaay in the back).

Your stubbornness will be the end of you. You keep insisting on learning lessons the hard way, and then you act surprised when it hurts like fuck. Resist digging in your heels for once. Every so often, someone comes along who’s wiser than you, and tries to gently lead you in the direction you’re headed anyway, only by a much better route than the one you’d chosen. When one of these kind and well-meaning souls tenderly takes your arm and steers you away from the foolhardy path you’ve taken, don’t jab them in the ribs with a sharp elbow and continue on your way with indignant pride. Just humbly and graciously turn aside from the bad choice you’ve made and fucking go with them.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) The spacecraft Messenger is headed towards Mercury, clothed in a hand-sewn ceramic cloth quilt to protect it from close proximity to the sun (which has about 11 times the intensity it has on Earth). I love the idea of the pinnacle of human technological achievement being protected by a quilt—the scientist who made it even had to get sewing tips from his mother. Mom must’ve been pretty surprised to learn the skills she acquired in Home Ec class in junior high would be used to protect a spacecraft from 700-degree heat. You’ll be similarly astounded this week, when a skill you picked up ages ago—probably as a little kid—have an eminently useful application you’d never previously imagined.

Maui Lawn Works

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Ticks tend to trigger a visceral disgust, especially when they’re so engorged that removing them risks a bloody explosion when they pop in your hand. Most people just scream and point at the swollen bloodsucker, and wait for someone with a sturdier (i.e., more experienced) disposition to dig it out. Unfortunately, the human tick who’s been quietly feeding on you has gotten to exactly that stage—freeing yourself from that discreet parasitism will most likely result in a filthy mess. Still, you wouldn’t leave an actual tick nestled in your armpit just because you were too squeamish to deal. Don’t wait for help—it’ll be too long in coming. Just grit your teeth, get a grip and yank it out.

“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Most of us have had to eat our words at one time or another; you’ve eaten whole books, thick hardcover tomes that scratched like hell all the way down. The coolest part about having your convictions overturned and reversed (after you get over the shock and embarrassment) is that you really understand how differently people can see things. Instead of sitting on the fence forever, like those wishy-washy Librans (who have a theoretical understanding of both sides of an issue) you get to actually be on both sides. Use that experience this week; even though in this case no argument is likely to overturn your convictions, hopefully it’ll at least trigger your empathy and understanding.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) This is no mechanical bull you’ve mounted. There are no soft mats scattered around nearby to cushion you when you tumble (after putting on a good show, of course). This is the real thing, and there’s no audience, and every chance of a goring if you lose your grip. In other words, hang on. The stakes are much higher than just entertaining your drunk friends at a cowboy bar. But so are the rewards; if you manage to get this particular beast used to you, you’ll have gained a formidable ally, and lost any particular urge to prove yourself to those who foolishly doubted you.

If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Stephen Hawking can do it; so can you. The Capricorn physicist recently announced he was wrong about black holes, reversing the precepts he’d advocated for nearly 30 years—in fact, around which he’d built a career. You’re usually cautious and careful, so you make few errors. Consequently, you’re simply not used to being wrong; you’ve had little practice at it. Nevertheless, you occasionally are wrong, and this is one of those times. Cough it up, Cappy. Dr. Hawking had to fork over an encyclopedia (he’d made a bet with a fellow physicist). What will you produce to show your regret, besides an apology?

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Like the silken fluttering of a moth’s wings at the edges of your mind, you know you’re forgetting something. It’s one those tiny details that so frequently slips beneath your notice and gets left out of your hectic schedule. Usually these have consequences no more serious than a late fee at the DVD rental place, so you’ve gotten used to not worrying about them. This time, however, the unforeseeable repercussions are more annoying and severe; if I were you, instead of brushing that nagging little signal away when it comes, I’d sit down and try to figure out exactly what it’s trying to remind you of.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You tend to unconsciously inflate human interactions; therefore, entering the proximity of that fellow with the temper could feel like walking into a nuclear explosion. Nevertheless, don’t retreat to your bunker to wait this one out. There hasn’t yet been a detonation, and anyway, your flexible soul is sturdier than an adamantium skeleton, and more able to resist (or roll with) radioactive emotions. When you see the danger signs this week, don’t run, or if you must, run towards them. You can deactivate the bomb (and should try), but only if you have your hot little hands right on it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your sign’s symbol is the Ram, because of their tendency to fearlessly wander into precariously high places. You’re just as brave as that plucky mountain goat—just slightly less surefooted. Luckily, you compensate with a skill not hinted at in stereotypical descriptions of your sign: tumbling. The talent most in demand this week will be your ability to fall—if not painlessly, at least recoverably—from lofty heights, and then just pick yourself up and start climbing again. When you’re fucked over this week, pick yourself up, please—I’ve got money riding on this one, and if you come through, I’ll let you know which asshole had the audacity to bet against you.

NOTICES

SINGING TELEGRAMS

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Let’s talk about actions and their occasionally transformative consequences. Churning milk turns it into butter, compressing coal creates diamonds, and drinking too much beer makes you fat. Similarly, if you fuck with a Taurus long enough, you get one of two fairly predictable results: the long-fused Bull either turns into a sullen, immoveable rock, or transmutes into a swift, untouchable black storm cloud. The rock is sturdy but essentially helpless; it just has to sit there and take it. The thunderhead, however, has options, and power. When you get to that fork in the road this week regarding how you’ll react to the persistent prodding you’ve been receiving, I think your choice is obvious, don’t you?

• Songs • Comedy • Flowers • Candy Respectful Kine 1-800-354-8608

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Just stay calm. You’ve suddenly found yourself in the upper limbs of a very tall tree, now bucking wildly in the wind. You climbed up here almost without noticing, so intent on the fruit in these branches, then suddenly, just now, you looked down, and noticed how high you’ve come. The vertigo is probably overwhelming. Breathe. I won’t lie to you; the descent is exponentially harder than the ascent. But you can do it. The trick is finding the balance between taking your time and becoming paralyzed by fear or indecision. Keep moving, steadily, and don’t think about how much further you have to go. You’ll be on the ground in no time, and, surprisingly, ready to do it all again.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Smack any asshole who says you’re fat—however obliquely or subtly. Reject especially any of the kind of underhanded compliments you’re likely to receive this week, the ones that are designed to make you feel bad about yourself, or worse, to react aggressively and start dishing out the same thing. A bad scenario would be you’d start disliking yourself because of something someone said; the worst-case scenario has you behaving just as badly as the fuckers who slyly abused you in the first place. Instead, just give ‘em a slap, a dirty look, or best yet, a hearty laugh, then utterly forget about them.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Estrogen-Fueled Feistiness Most people would choose to escape to Hana or hide out at home after a particularly stressful week. Others might take a therapeutic swim in the ocean or surf. Some even have a pau hana or two at their favorite neighborhood bar. While others… yes, others buy latex stockings and have guacamole flung at them. Not that the Wednesday night Jen and I went out was particularly stressful. We did our usual Maui Film Festival movie at the MACC thing and then headed over to Paia, stopping, of course, to intellectually discuss and critique the film we just saw—before conversation with our bar friends would inevitably turn to such mind-benders as “the marital future of women who get breast implants.” “Yes, I’m generalizing,” said our most feminist male friend, David. “If a chick has fake boobs, she’s not going to get married. She’s selfish—[breast implants] mess up nursing so she’s not thinking about having kids. She got them for attention, which means she’s insecure and needy. I’ve always been an ass man. That’s the part that gets the most use.” “It’s not about the fake boobs and nice ass—if she drives you fucking nuts, it ain’t no fun,” said our happily married friend, TBB. “On the other hand, if a pair of $5,000 fake titties shuts her up, that might not be such a bad deal.” But by Friday, an accumulation of minor annoyances during the week meant that the shots of Jack Daniels I shared with friends at Idini’s in Wailuku, post-Tyson fight, would grant me the impetus to not only purchase latex stockings and a beautifully crafted glass dildo at Paradise Spice, but also to enact a little estrogen-fueled feistiness at the Krispy Kreme drive-thru. There are some things you would rather not know, trust me. Saturday meant a little more shopping therapy with a friend, as we modeled skimpy outfits for each other at Lahaina Lingerie, in preparation for the Playboy Pajama Party at Paradice Bluz later that night. Pajamas? Puh-leeze. You know “Playboy Pajama” is just a classy way to say, “we don’t care what the guys wear ‘cause it’s all about girls showing major booty.” Which they did. And so did we. Thanks, Aunty Panty! As the stress of the week was pretty much lifted by Sunday, Sonja and I decided to go to a mature, daytime party held by cultured adults in a tidy, stylishly decorated home in the upper westside. My friends and I did the mature, daytime party thing and brought a very large bowl of homemade guacamole, garnished fetchingly with orchids, as well as a very mature, daytime bottle of Hornitos tequila. Olé! It turned out the cultured adults, with names like Dusty, Pinky and Roxy, were celebrating a couple birthdays with a couple dozen margaritas since noon. After the piñata was erected, then destroyed, and the blended margaritas were eventually embellished with rum and beer, along with the tequila, a lovely chocolate cake with frosting was presented. And then flung. As pandemonium spread among the cultured, mature, daytime adults throughout the stylishly decorated lanai, the very large bowl of fetchingly garnished guacamole went flying, landing on yours truly. Green really isn’t my color, but no matter. The host and hostess quickly whipped out their garden hose and sprayed down the wild tequila beasts of their once mature, daytime party before the police were called by maybe more stressed, non-latex stocking purchasing neighbors.
