FOOD & CULTURAL CENTRE

A New Version of Toronto’s Shopping Centre

PROJECT INFORMATION

Thorncliffe Park, also called the ‘Arrival City’, loated on the Don River valley corridor is a self contained multicultural community that comprises of a shopping mall (East York Town Centre), school, library, South Asian restaurants, park, business centre etc. However, with the new construction of the Metroline in replacement of the Overlea Boulevard i.e the South Asian market hub, the cultural identity and significance of the South Asian community is facing crisis. East York Town Center, 100m away from the shopping complex has witnessed a decline in footfall and closed retail shops due to the increasing expenses and less economic opportunities in the community. Thus, the proposed Food & Cultural Centre on the East York Town Centre site aims to transform Thorncliffe Park by re-considering the needs of its neighbourhood. The project proposes a district shopping centre to help preserve the lost traditions and offer better revenue generation opportunities.

The front facade of the building has a semi covered arcade on either ends of the central axis, thus, bringing the focus towards the indoor plaza entry. The restaurant block has it’s private indoor plaza connected to the open central space. Stores like Food Basics, Shoppers Drug Mart etc. have been retained from the previous design of East York Town Centre as an effort to preserve the memories of the past. The design of the building comprises of courtyards, street patterns, indoor-outdoor spaces, arches, colours and patterns similar to the South Asian art, culture, and architecture.

STRATEGIES - Relationship of people with their cultural history and traditions is the focal point

COMMERCIAL ZONE

The retail spaces have been designed along the periphery of the courtyard. It provides a resting space for the customers along with local shopping experience.

MULTI-PURPOSE/EXHIBITION AREA

The multi-purpose space/exhibition area is designed on the concept of an indoor-outdoor relationship within the same space. The central double height courtyard dividing the two spaces act as the focal point. These two axis connects different blocks to each other as well as highlights the courtyard design at their interfsection.

FOOD COURT

The food kiosks have been designed with two openings catering customers both in the food court and drive thru. The double storey food court comprises of a public, semi-public and private seating area. All three seating areas have been designed to provide unique dining experiences like terrace overlooking the courtyard, and semi-private space overlooking the live tandoor in the open space.

RESTAURANT BLOCK

The two storey restaurant block has a separate plaza directly connected to the open air central plaza. The space has been designed similar to the downtown street with variety of cuisine and dining options.

Tea house & Spa

PROJECT INFORMATION

Serendipity:Teahouse&Spa is a unique studio project that reflects on the relationship between the natural material experience and lighting to create different atmospheric qualities. The journey of the spaces on a contour site from forest to the water body creates a unique user experience with the help of the following factors like changing materials, interior design, heights and volume of the spaces designed, indoor outdoor relationships, view points, height above or below the ground level, openings, seating areas, lighting and much more. The building comprises of both semi-private and private spaces of tea house and spa. As the name of the building suggests, the unique entrance of the building takes the users on an un-explored journey as only a part of the tea house is fully visible from the entrance and the rest of the building can only be seen at the end of the journey near the water body.

PROJECT INFORMATION

Co-housing and care centre shares common requirements like secure social spaces, shared common spaces, comfortable design spaces etc. The pandemic along with various other after affects had brought an increase in significant amount of people battling the lasting illness from it. Long hauler covid-19 patients are those suffering with the after affects of covid-19, physically, emotionally and socially. Thus, Nexus co-housing and care centre aims to re-gain the lost connection of the long haulers with and within the communities through therapeutic incidental spaces of interaction, secure private/semi private social spaces, comfortable and spacious units.

The goal is to re-gain the lost connection to re-connect people to peple, people with surroundings, and people with modern techniques while maintaining the culture.
