Whether your child is a Mini Molecule (grades preK(4)-2) just discovering the wonders of science, an Awesome Atom (grades 3-6) ready to sink their hands into new and interesting discoveries, or an Excited Electron (grades 7-9) ready to be challenged with innovative experiments that explore the wide world of STEM careers, Discovery Camp is sure to foster collaboration, curiosity, and creativity in EVERY kid. With new themes each week, there is always something more to discover at The Franklin Institute Summer Camp!

Tips for parents: Pick and choose the themes and camps that fit your family’s schedule and interests! Campers do not need to attend weekly sessions consecutively. Summer camp at The Franklin Institute runs until 4:00 pm, a full hour longer than many of the other summer camps in Philadelphia!

MINI MOLECULES

For MINI MOLECULES, a lifelong love of science starts with a spark! Through fun handson explorations, campers will develop an inquisitive approach to the world—asking questions, making discoveries, and celebrating creative thinking!

Dates and Themes June 12-16 – Make It, Break It What does it take to build a super structure—or knock it down? As they measure, stack, connect, and demolish, campers will see the basics of architecture and engineering in action! June 19-23 – Creature Features There is so much to learn from the creatures with whom we share the earth! Through investigating the habits and habitats of some of the world’s most amazing animals, campers will make incredible discoveries about the world around them and the creatures they may encounter. June 26-30 – Ooey, Gooey, Kablooey Campers get their hands dirty exploring the building blocks of chemistry as they mix up a week of messes, from oozy to explosive! July 5-7 – Power Up!

July 31-August 4 – Cool Colors, Cool Chemistry Calling all splashy scientists! In this colorful week of camp, campers get creative as they explore the chemistry of colors and the properties of light. August 7-11 – Things That Move What makes a boat float? How do airplanes stay in the sky? Why do trains move on tracks? Inquisitive campers will discover the inner workings of their favorite moving machines in this week dedicated to the buzz of engines and the whirl of propellers! August 14-18 – Star Light, Star Bright What star will I see tonight? Amateur astronomers will turn their eyes to the skies as they learn about light and heat from the sun and stars through lots of open exploration. This out-of-this-world camp is sure to shed some light on astronomy! August 21-25 – Best of 2017!

Spark a curiosity for robots in even the youngest minds as campers explore the mechanics, circuits, and coding that make their favorite robots tick.

3…2…1…BLAST OFF! Strap in for a week of exploring the far reaches of outer space as an astronaut. In this dynamic week all about what it is like to live and work in space, campers will come away with ideas that reach to the moon and back.

July 17-21 – Science Detectives Scientists are like detectives—searching for clues and solving mysteries! Join us for a week of creative problem solving as campers use their senses to look closely, inspect carefully, and use creativity to solve daily mysteries. July 24-28 – Spin, Swing, Slide Physics is more fun when it takes place on the playground! Using examples from the jungle gym to the skate park, campers will learn how the laws of motion work when they are spinning, swinging, and sliding.

AWESOME ATOMS

Discovery is the name and science is the game when it comes to the AWESOME ATOMS. With explosive activities developed to challenge campers’ perceptions, inspire an excitement for STEM learning, and foster collaborative problem solving skills, these dynamic camps are sure to blow your camper’s mind! 5

Dates and Themes June 12-16 – Build It, Destroy It There isn’t much that is more fun than building something amazing—and then destroying it! In this week full of engineering concepts in action, campers will develop key skills related to modeling, materials, and structural integrity! June 19-23 – Catastrophe! Hurricanes, volcanoes, fires, and floods—there is so much that we can learn about our world from the biggest catastrophes that strike! In this explosive week, campers will not only learn WHY natural disasters happen, but also HOW humans can prepare for extreme events in our future. June 26-30 – Mess Fest Slime it, splash it, sizzle it! Campers get hands-on with the elements in this explosive week of Discovery Camp, where The Franklin Institute shows that we aren’t afraid to get messy with science. July 5-7 – Robots (See page 10 for details on special holiday week pricing)

Prepare to have your circuits blown in this robotics camp! Discover what makes robots tick as we build structures, wire circuits, and learn computer coding. July 10-14 – Space Explorers 3…2…1…BLAST OFF! Strap in for a week of exploring the far reaches of outer space as an astronaut. July 31-August 4 – Science Wizards You are hereby invited to The Franklin Institute School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Wear your robes and your safety goggles as you brew potions, levitate objects, and discover how chemistry and physics make the magic happen! August 7-11 – Wheels, Wings, & Watercraft What makes a boat float? How do airplanes stay in the sky? Why do trains move on tracks? Inquisitive campers will discover the physics and mechanics of moving machines while being challenged to design and build some new ones of their own. August 14-18 – Reach for the Stars Calling all amateur astronomers! Turn your eyes to the skies in this camp exploring the sun and stars through hands-on activities and guided observations. This out-of-this-world camp is sure to shed some light on astronomy! Plus! Build your own solar viewer as we prepare for the following week’s solar eclipse. August 21-25 – Best of 2017! July 17-21 – Whodunnit? Follow the clues and find the evidence! Join us for a week of creative problem solving as campers become crime scene investigators, work together, uncover evidence, solve mysteries—and have fun along the way! July 24-28 – Amusement Park Physics Physics is more fun when it takes place in the amusement park! In this roller-coaster of a camp week, we will learn the laws of motion and principles of simple machines while designing roller coasters, visualizing ferris wheels, and experimenting with gravity.

EXCITED ELECTRONS

EXCITED ELECTRONS develop a passion for science in the most advanced camps offered at The Franklin Institute. Your budding amateur scientist will dive to new depths in their pursuit of discovery and reach new heights with their innovative thinking as they work on complex science projects in a dynamic, collaborative, and fun setting! 7

July 31-August 4 – Special Effects Studio

Join the ranks of the “maker movement” and test your engineering skills in this workshop-style camp. Through daily design and building challenges, campers will work like expert engineers and innovative inventors!

From the chemistry of controlled explosions to the physics of stunt men—movies rely on science to create special effects that will blow your mind. Become a special effects expert in this studio setting where you can recreate your favorite moments from the silver screen using the powers of science to make movie magic!

June 19-23 – Disaster Lab

August 7-11 – STEM Garage

Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, tornadoes—in this week of exciting extremes, campers step into the role of disaster response planners as they study the forces behind natural disasters and invent solutions to prepare humans for surviving catastrophes to come.

Get down and dirty in the STEM Garage, where campers discover what is ‘under the hood’ of their favorite machines through hands-on exploration. Hone your mechanical engineering skills as you design and test your own vehicle concepts in this unique camp.

June 12-16 – Design Studio

June 26-30 – Mess Buster In this wet and wild week, campers become the masters of their own messy fate—controlling the variables of explosive experiments and observing the effects they have on their fellow campers. Join us and find out just how far The Franklin Institute is willing to go to get messy with science!

August 14-18 – Star Search

July 5-7 – Tech Studio

Turn your eyes to the skies in this camp exploring the entire electromagnetic spectrum! From the sun to the stars, this out-of-this-world camp is sure to shed some light on science! Plus! Build your own solar viewer as we prepare for the following week’s solar eclipse.

August 21-25 – Best of 2017!

Prepare to have your circuits blown in this coding and computers camp! Becoming masters of the tech studio, campers will use the most cutting-edge technology—like 3D printing and computer-aided design software—to create their own designs and inventions.

July 10-14 – Mission Control Strap in for a week of exploring the far reaches of outer space, from astronauts to astronomy. In this dynamic week of learning and discovery—featuring a bottle rocket design challenge—campers will return to earth at the end of each day with scientific knowledge that reaches to the moon and back.

August 28-September 1 – Best of 2017! Can’t get enough of Discovery Camp? To celebrate the end of summer and all that our scientists have learned, we will revisit the most popular activities, topics, shows, and demonstrations of the 2017 camp season!

July 17-21 – CSI Forensics meets fun as amateur crime scene detectives uncover clues, analyze evidence, and crack codes to solve some of science’s greatest mysteries in this dynamic camp. July 24-28 – Theme Park Engineers Physics is more fun when it takes place in the amusement park! In this roller-coaster of a camp week, we will use computer modeling alongside the laws of motion and principles of simple machines to design all-new amusement park rides and test our theories in real-world demonstrations.
