I was roughly five months pregnant when I found out I might lose my mom. For most people, January means New Year’s resolutions, but for me, it’s a time when I’m reminded of surgeries, hospitals and my mother suffering through chemotherapy and radiation. January is not only the start of a new year, it is also Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

What should have been the happiest months of my life turned out to be the most terrifying. I had to be strong for my mother.

In reality, though, I was a mess. I never let her see that and in hindsight, she was the same way.

In between my check-ups and shopping for items I needed to fill a nursery, my mom was getting tests and seeing specialists.

With my help, she hosted a baby shower for my husband and me.

The following morning, I should have been at home unpacking all the wonderful gifts everyone gave us. Instead, I sat in a waiting room at the hospital while she underwent surgery.

My mom was determined to do whatever it took so that my son didn’t have to grow up without her in his life. She also wanted to see me become a mother, and I wanted to show her what I learned from her. We were going to do this together.

As my due date neared, chemotherapy and radiation had started for my mother. The surgeries continued. Physically, I was finally feeling better as my morning sickness came to a halt.

For months I had been sick to my stomach, throwing up constantly, and running from every smell there was. As for my mom, chemo was taking its toll. We would joke to make light of the situation.

I had said it was her turn to run from the smells and food.

Another struggle we faced together were outside voices.

Sometimes friends, family, and strangers would offer advice. I was constantly told that my views on parenting would change once the baby was here. At the same time, they would tell my mom what she needed to do to be cured. They suggested natural remedies, traveling out of the country, and other various treatments. They said the chemo and radiation would kill her faster than cancer would.

In those moments we learned a lot. We counted on each other to be supportive. We leaned on one another to get through this.

Many times I would remind her that she was seeing the best doctors around, not to give up. This had to work.

Stay positive.

With each week that passed, I could see more and more how much she tried to hide how truly horrible she felt. It was harder and harder for her to help me prepare for the baby.

But she fought on.

Her biggest fear was that her grandson would be born on a chemo day. She was afraid she

would be hooked up to machines and would miss it.

My due date came and went.

At exactly 41 weeks, I went to the doctor, and my blood pressure was too high. I had struggled with high blood pressure and other preeclampsia symptoms throughout my pregnancy. I was admitted to the hospital immediately. However, after blood work and a few tests, the doctor determined I did not need an emergency cesarean section right away.

Instead, he decided to induce me and see if my body would take over. Thankfully, it did.

I was admitted on a Tuesday, which meant the following day was a chemo day. Our worst fears started to become a reality, and I wept uncontrollably. That night, I was restless in the hospital. I couldn’t stop thinking that I may not see my mom again until after my son was born. I didn’t know how I could do this without her by my side.

everything began to happen very fast. I was alone and scared. My husband was at home walking the dog when I texted him to hurry back. He then called my mom to let her know and asked her to come to the hospital as quickly as possible. I was about to get an epidural, and the nurses informed us that I may not get it in time because I was progressing so quickly.

We then learned that my mother was getting ready to go to chemo, but she was fighting hard to be there for the birth.

And she won. We all did.

Just three hours after she arrived, my son was born.

I watched her battle cancer, go through treatment, and recover throughout the first year of my son’s life. While her hair thinned from chemotherapy, I lost some of mine postpartum. We began to recover together. I would FaceTime her in the morning and show her how much hair fell out, and she would do the same. We would joke about our barely visible bald spots.

Those moments were bittersweet, and we would laugh.

My family got lucky. My mom fought hard, and she won. Her grandson, my child, is now nearing 16 months of age, and she is cancer free.

Throughout this process and after talking with the doctors, we both learned a lot. The biggest takeaway was this: HPV is not always the cause of cervical cancer. It’s just one of those things.

Some people just get it.

I urge you to pay attention to your body, be aware of any changes, and get routine checkups. If something doesn’t seem right, question it and don’t give up. As it did for my mom, it could save your life.

n honor of Studio Z Fitness owner Kathryn Zbikowski’s birthday month, the women in the 9 a.m. Zumba class on Friday, Jan. 11, combined dancing with strength training exercises for each letter of the word “birthday.”

The class participants — many over the age of 60 — danced to “Don’t stop the party” then began their circuits with burpees.

“I like to push them out of their box,” said Coach Z, as she’s best known. “It’s all about just trying new things. Come out of your comfort zone and try something new. You’ll never know if you’ll like it or not unless you try it.”

In between the sets, you could see smiles on the faces of the ladies in the packed room at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite D112.

size 22 to a size 8. She was a member for five years and then became certified to teach Zumba one year ago.

In January 2018, Cheryl Bensley challenged herself to get back in shape. She joined a gym but didn’t enjoy working out there, she said.

“When I came here, it was unbelievable,” Bensley said. “I dropped weight, I toned up. I’m 63 years old, and it’s like I’m more energetic. I ride my bike, we do hiking trips, we’ve gone kayaking, paddle boarding and mountain biking, which I’ve never done. It was wonderful. It’s a fun group of women. We support one another.”

Cheryl Few, 62, echoed Bensley’s enthusiasm for trying new things.

Few got involved with the studio one year ago after still struggling with her weight following gastric bypass surgery. She was a size 24 and is now a 14/16, Coach Z said.

Nancy Zakrzewski, 67, only recently moved to Palm Coast, but she said this is the best thing she’s ever done by herself.

“You get stronger, but it’s functional strength,” Zakrzewski said.

“I can do things that I have not been able to do in years.”

The studio, which has been in Palm Coast for six years, focuses on being a place “for real women.”

“I want it to be for women only because I don’t want that intimidating environment that you may or may not find in a gym,” Coach Z said. “People go and they’re worried about what they look like. I don’t want that here; come as you are, be who you are, grow into who you want to become here, and that’s how we are. And we all support each other.”

Sherri Hunter emphasized that transformations are different for everyone.

“What I want to say is we’re a women studio — all fitness, all sizes — and we come to support one another to your own level,” Hunter said. “My weight didn’t change, but I lost two pant sizes. So, I burned and toned. My bone density went up, so I saw improvements that maybe didn’t look to the outside, but to the inside and my well-being. The support is awesome. You come, and if you’re not here a couple of days, there’s accountability.”

Coach Z isn’t just preaching to the choir when she pushes her students to work harder, though.

She’s still pushing herself toward her goals.

“I started here because I knew I needed to do something,” said Coach Z, who began her weightloss journey at 300 pounds. “I used to dance, so I started with Zumba, fell in love with it, the weight started to come off. …

Then I said, ‘Well, I want to eat a little bit better; maybe the weight will come off faster.’ So, then I did that. And then I thought this was so amazing, I wanted to become an instructor. And I started inspiring other women. From there it just snowballed.”

‘Going the extra mile’ Ten months after running her first half-marathon, Ormond Beach’s Rebecca Rybicki lost 80 pounds.

The first time Ormond Beach resident Rebecca Rybicki ran a 5K, she finished last out of the 10 women in her age group.

It took her 39 minutes, 8 seconds to run the DeLeon Springs 5K on Jan. 6, 2013, and it was then

Rybicki decided to make a change in her lifestyle. She made it her goal to run in the 2014 DeLeon Springs half-marathon, but though she ran a few miles here and there, she never committed herself fully to the cause.

Rybicki was still eating fast food regularly and drinking a lot of soda. Back then, eating in front of a TV was her happy place, she said.

“Anything that was fried or fattening, I ate it,” Rybicki said.

As the marathon neared, Rybicki said it had become a “burden” in her mind. She visited her doctor at the end of the

year, crying in his office because she thought there was something wrong with her body. She told him she was running but hadn’t lost any weight — Rybicki weighed 220 pounds at the time.

Her doctor told her it was her diet that was the problem. When she returned to her car, she saw that the doctor had listed obesity as her reason to visit him.

“And I was just like, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Rybicki said. “It just hit me really hard.”

Rybicki hadn’t always struggled with her health. It started when her father died shortly after her 18th birthday. She turned to food

to help deal with the pain.

Then, life happened. She met her husband, Kevin, went to school to become a teacher and had two daughters.

It took that doctor’s visit in 2013 to set Rybicki on the track that would change not only her life, but her family’s. She decided to run in the half-marathon as she was driving to the race, though it was 10 miles longer than what she was used to running.

At the same time, the 10-year anniversary of her father’s death was coming up, and that led her to run the DeLeon Springs halfmarathon on Jan. 5, 2014, in his memory.

“I was looking at those 10 extra miles as like every year that he had been gone,” Rybicki said.

She finished in 3 hours, 1 min-

ute. Rybicki placed last, again, out of the 10 women in her age group.

Her underarms were rubbed raw and bleeding, and she was chaffing terribly, she recalls.

But she finished, and her family members were one of the last groups waiting at the finish line.

Everything changed after that race. Rybicki, who currently teaches fourth grade at Pathways Elementary, became inspired.

She began signing up for as many 5Ks as possible and completely transformed her diet. With every race she ran, she got faster, running got easier, and she was losing weight. Her husband joined her along the way, and Rybicki started to push her daughters in a stroller in races.

At the end of 10 months, she had lost 80 pounds. Her husband

“We’ve both had a lot of negativity in our lives, on both sides,” Kevin Rybicki said. “We’ve overcome a lot, and we just had to make a change. Running and a healthier lifestyle did that for us.”

In 2015, Rebecca Rybicki ran the DeLeon Springs half-marathon once again. This time, she finished in 2 hours, 1 minute. She also placed first out of the nine women in her age group.

Since then, she has pushed herself to run longer distances. In December 2017, she ran her first ultramarathon: a 50-mile race from Marineland to Ponce Inlet.

She placed in the top 10, having finished the race in 10 hours, 41 minutes.

This past December, she took things up notch. She ran in the Daytona 100 ultramarathon, which started in Jacksonville and finished in Ponce Inlet. It took her 28 hours.

But she finished. Not everyone did.

It’s a mental battle to transition into a healthy lifestyle, she said, but she recommends educating yourself and finding an activity to get you moving. Running helped her hold herself accountable.

Her advice for people struggling with their health?

“Don’t be afraid of being last,” Rebecca Rybicki said. “I was last.

Someone has to be last, and that’s what I always tell everyone.”
