The Maurer Foundation and our mission to save lives...

The Maurer Foundation’s roots in breast health education go all the way back to the private practice of our founder, Dr. Virginia Maurer. While seeing patients as a breast surgeon, Dr. Maurer identified a real need for women of all ages to be better informed about the role they play in their own breast health. From lessons on early detection to reducing risk factors for breast cancer, Dr. Maurer’s success with her own patients and their families led her to reach out to the surrounding community, particularly through local high schools. This outreach was a direct result of Dr. Maurer’s belief that the choices young women make today can wield a tremendous influence over their lifelong breast health. In 1995, Dr. Maurer’s personal passion became the driving force behind The Maurer Foundation. In that first year, we reached just over a thousand people. Since then, over 204,000 people have heard our lifesaving message of combating breast cancer through early detection and prevention. Our primary outreach occurs through the breast health programs we present in high schools, colleges, community organizations, businesses, and health fairs throughout Long Island and the Greater New York area. During these programs, we offer practical information about the www.maurerfoundation.org

myriad of ways women can actively improve their own breast health. From demonstrating proper breast selfexam techniques and outlining the importance of early detection to describing how lifestyle choices like diet and exercise affect breast cancer risk, we focus on the real-life tools women can use to improve their odds against breast cancer. We also provide training for high school students to run Being Breast Smart (BBS) clubs in their schools, allowing for peer-to-peer encouragement and accountability. With some of the nation’s highest breast cancer rates occurring right here on Long Island, we believe our community outreach is truly life-saving. This year, over 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die; however, we are not powerless in the face of this disease. Evidence shows that healthy lifestyle choices like good nutrition, regular exercise, and not smoking can reduce the risk of breast cancer forming in the first place, while studies have long demonstrated that catching breast cancer early is the best predictor of survival. As more young women are empowered and educated through our breast health programs, we hope the result will be a lasting impact of lower cancer rates and higher recovery for generations to come. 9

About The Founder Dr. Virginia E. Maurer

Dr. Virginia E. Maurer, MD is a nationally recognized leader in the field of breast health education. A graduate of Queen’s University School of Medicine in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, she is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Maurer is a prominent breast surgeon and breast cancer specialist. She has been in private practice since 1981 and currently maintains two offices in the New York area. A staunch proponent of breast cancer awareness, Dr. Maurer discovered that many women lacked access to pertinent and current information about breast health and breast cancer. She resolved to correct that deficit, establishing The Maurer

Foundation for Breast Health Education in 1995. Today, she remains active in her role as Founder and Board Member. Over the years, Dr. Maurer’s tenacity, compassion, and professionalism have made her one of the country’s leading advocates for women’s health care. She is a member of the Advisory Board of 1 in 9, the Community Advisory Board of Holiday House and former member of the Board of Trustees of the Greenvale School. She has been a member of the Society for the Study of Breast Disease, the American Medical Women’s Association, and the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group. Dr. Maurer has two daughters and resides in Garden City, NY.

About Our Honoree Angela Susan Anton

Angela Susan Anton is one of Long Island’s most dynamic, prominent and innovative businesswomen, and is a leader of the area’s business community. Publisher of the Anton Community Newspapers, a highly acclaimed group of community newspapers with a weekly readership of approximately 150,000, Angela devotes her time and energy to keeping her newspapers’ readers informed of the news of their communities. “I have a huge commitment to the community and giving back,” says Angela. “I believe strongly in that.” Her belief in giving back is evidenced by the tireless work that she does in support of many charitable organizations. Being the publisher of 16 newspapers, which are an integral part of the communities on which they report, requires much time and effort, although it is something that Angela loves to do. However, she still has found the time to serve on the board of directors of the American Liver Foundation of Greater New York, the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, the Theodore Roosevelt Council Boy Scouts of America,

the Long Island Arts Alliance, and the Nassau County Museum of Art. In addition, she is a member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Administrative Board, serves as the cochairperson for the Nassau County of Art’s Museum Ball, which is a major fundraiser for the museum, is on the advisory board of Seven Stars and Stripes, and is a member of the Explorers Club in New York City. Angela has also served on many other boards and committees of charitable organizations that greatly benefit the community. In addition to her tireless work, the Anton Community Newspapers organization also works to benefit its communities. As as example, during the holiday season, there is a toy drive to collect toys for the Toys for Tots program. A Long Island native who has lived here her entire life, Angela is dedicated to helping Long Islanders. She grew up on the north shore of Long Island. The mother of three children, Angela enjoys the many unique and exciting things that Long Island offers.

Did You Know?

Get the Facts About Breast Cancer The Maurer Foundation’s mission is to educate women about the facts and myths about breast cancer prevention and early detection.

1

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Odds are, we all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer.

2

One in three cancers diagnosed in U.S. women is breast cancer.

3

Long Island has breast cancer diagnosis rates approximately 11% higher than the statewide average.

4 5

Men account for 1% of all breast cancer cases diagnosed. Breast cancer risk lowers significantly if a healthy lifestyle begins at a young age.

6

The Maurer Foundation is the only non-profit dedicated solely to educating people on Long Island and the Greater New York area about risk reduction and early detection of breast cancer.

7

Since our inception, our program educated over 204,000 students and women about breast health.

8

The most effective approach to breast health is three-pronged: monthly breast self-exams, annual mammograms and annual clinical breast exams.

9

The Maurer Foundation offers both on-site and webinar corporate breast health workshops tailored to your company.

10

While many women still do breast self-exams in the shower, selfexams are actually more effective when performed lying down.

11

The Maurer Foundation has a free custom mammogram and breast selfexam appointment reminder service on our website.

12

According to a 2010 Swedish study, breast cancer mortality was reduced 29% for women ages 40-49 who received mammograms.

13

Scheduling your mammogram 6 months before or after the clinical breast exam your doctor performs in his/ her office annually is a great way to monitor your breast health twice a year.

14

The average lump found through a breast self-exam is the size of a pea, while the average size of a lump accidentally discovered is the size of a golf ball.

15

The earlier you detect breast cancer, the greater the chance there is to

stop it.
