Community Partnerships Help Expand Maurer Foundation Educational Outreach by
SuSan Samaroo, ExEcutivE DirEctor
In our first year, 1995, we educated just over 1,000 people about breast health. In the past 21 years, that number has grown to almost 300,000 people. We could not have reached so many without the immense contributions of the diverse group of organizations we have partnered with. • Pink Aid grants have allowed us to reach socio-economically disadvantaged Long Islanders. • The annual LI2Day Walk raised over $17,000 for us in 2015 alone. • We have trained Molloy College nursing students how to educate their patients about breast health, and in turn their doctoral students have assisted in a review of our program literature. In addition, our mission is continuously supported by generous gifts from organizations such as the Frank J. Antun Foundation, the Nassau County Bar Association WE CARE Fund, the 7th District Foundation, and the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association. Without the help of these partners and many others, we could not fulfill our mission. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Mammograms Introducing Our New Young May Also Detect Professionals Committee Heart Disease A new study, presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Scientific Session in early April, is making headlines for its groundbreaking finding: digital mammograms appear to detect early signs of heart disease as well as breast cancer. The study shows that detecting calcium buildup in the breast’s arteries can lead to an even earlier diagnosis (and thus a better outcome) of heart disease—simply by examining mammograms that many women are already receiving every year. Essentially, this means we can now look at digital mammograms as a two-for-one screening tool, able to detect early signs of both breast cancer and heart disease. The Young Professionals Committee (YPC), established in late 2015, garners support for the Maurer Foundation by spreading our message of breast health education and breast cancer prevention to up-and-coming professionals and the Long Island community. These inspiring young professionals—Cristian Anghel, Kira Kowalchik, Courtney Lynch, Jason Ruvin, and Samantha Vulpis—will host networking events and cultivate the next generation of community leaders. Thanks For Making Our 2016 North Shore M.S. Pink Bowl A “Striking” Success! Students Fundraise With “Penny Wars” Our 7th Annual Pink Bowl, sponsored by Sperry Federal Credit Union, took place Feb. 28 and raised almost $16,000! Competition was fierce as over 100 participants fought for bragging rights and trophies. Signature Bank won the highest score for the Battle of the Banks. AVZ bowled the highest among the non-bank teams. The top female bowler was Lenore Carbone, and the top male bowlers were Peter Griffin (from Citibank) and John Manley (from AVZ).
