Caffery’s love of fashion photography continued to grow and in 2008, he signed with to Wilhelmina Agency in South Beach, FL and continued to create beautiful images. In 2011 he opened a studio where he offered hair, make-up, interior design and styling services. In that same year, he won the Contessa Award for Men’s Stylist. In 2012, he won the award again. Caffery moved on to pursue a Certificate in Photography Studies at Toronto’s Ryerson University in 2012. At the end of his accelerated program, he won the Student Award presented by the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Caffery Van Horne is a Canadian, awardwinning stylist who has worked in the industries of fashion and conceptual design for 15 years. After attending the prestigious Academy of Merchandising and Design in Toronto, Canada in 1998, he moved to London, UK where he worked on fashion editorials, runway shows and music videos as key hairstylist. With a growing interest in conceptual design, in 2003 he took advantage of an opportunity to open a modern furniture store in Idaho Falls, ID and did so successfully. In 2005 he sold the business, moved back to his hometown of Toronto and returned to styling.

In 2014, he began shooting for Colombian swimwear companies, which led to the production of his long awaited namesake fashion line.

In 2006, Caffery was offered a position as a Lifestyle Director for Canada’s leading diversity magazine called Amoi. This position was the catalyst that sparked his interest in art direction and photography. While his official duties included developing and writing fashion, beauty, travel and luxury stories, the Editorial Director recognized his bourgeoning talent in art direction. As a result, he was offered the opportunity to art direct photo shoots on an ad hoc basis.

It would be easy to label you as a ‘Creative Genius’ or a ‘Brilliant Stylist’ because you are. But those labels don’t adequately reflect the depth of your talents. Yes, you have a flair for creativity. Yes, you have an amazing eye for posing and framing and background details. Yes, you can bring it all together to create an impressive visual experience. But your real talent is adding an emotional element to your visual story telling, where you inspire, delight, stimulate, excite, depress, anger and enthrall your viewers. You are a rare breed, Mr. Van Horne, and my life is richer having been touched by your creative influence. Jason Romrell, ESQ General Counsel Los Angeles, California.

Longevity and consistency are two words nearly forgotten in today’s fast-paced and technology obsessed world. We run and run to get somewhere quicker and in turn lose the perspective, the foresight and hindsight that it takes to achieve those two things. Longevity. Consistency. Few artists, no matter the medium they work in, are able to achieve the two. Caffery Van Horne is one of those few. As a fashion photographer, I come across with hair stylists with varying levels of skill and creativity. Through my observation of the fashion industry and the field of fashion hairstyling, I do not hesitate to state that Caffery Van Horne is among the most successful and talented hairstylists I have had the pleasure of collaborating with. I attribute his success to his professionalism and creativity. He has the ability to create stunning hairstyles that are not only unique, but also to understand and interpret the intricacies of the fashion industry, which makes his contribution to any project a valuable asset. However, he also understands the needs of the client and photographer alike, and he works diligently to meet these goals. In an industry where the majority of hair-stylists are mere technicians, Caffery is a true artist and visionary. Peter Tamlin Fashion Photographer

THE

CON TE S A S AWARD

102

103

The Contessa is the highest award you can get as a hair stylist in Canada. I entered in the men’s category because, over the years, the competition has heavily celebrated avant-garde categories, and I wanted to do something where people still look like themselves –not just art for the sake of art. I think with men you can do that. So I decided on that category and having a really strong understanding on men’s style, be it wardrobe, hair, etc., I got the category I went after. Again, it was a solo effort. It was just myself and my photographer. I did everything else and I stayed true to form and I won.

have a big-name salon behind you then a lot of people don’t have the confidence and won’t jump into it. I think it’s a little bit harder when you are an independent. I own my own salon but I’m a very small operation. A small but glamorous operation. You just have to keep doing it and your time will come. Do it your way and if you do your best and don’t come out on top, that’s okay too. You tried. It’s important to try. I live by the mantra that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. So take the shots. CAFFERY VAN HORNE

Hundreds of hairdressers submit. The judging panel is extensive and it’s judged on different levels like overall presentation and how the hair relates to the model and the entire look. I was the only black person in the whole competition. When you get into the competition circuit it gets very expensive to compete. Unless you belong to a big-name organization or you 104

MANIFESTO

Growing up I looked forward to Sundays. It was the day we wore out best things to stroll along the avenue and enjoy an ice cream. Church was a huge part of the culture I grew up in, and the day began getting dressed in your finest things for worship. I missed this feeling during the week.

As fast fashion has redefined the industry, it has become increasingly more difficult to find garments with long-term value. I felt like part of a lost market. I don’t care what’s fashionably in or out. I’m more concerned with the garment’s cut, how will It flatter the body, how much time and consideration was put in the construction and how much wear will one get out of it. Rarely can you find flattering clothes that can be worn for several seasons, without spending unreasonable amounts of money.

When my family moved to Canada, I begged my mother to sent me to a uniform school. I wanted to wear a structured attire versus acquiring the clothes that would not have been in our budget. Catholic schools gave way to that. As I got older I was given the liberty to purchase my uniform. I decided that instead of the three pairs of gray slacks, I would instead purchase a single gray suit pant from Marks and Spencer. I’d rather have one pair that I would clean on the weekend and looks impeccable, than own several cheaper pairs that were average at best. This was a philosophy that I would later apply to everything. Repeatedly, I would hear friends complain that their closets were too small; however, I could never recall their clothes looking spectacular. Perhaps they owned too much of nothing.

As the idea of developing my design line started to grow, I set out to find a comfortable environment where such artisans who have a traditional, old war approach to their craft exist. With leather being a huge part of my design, I discovered production in Colombia. Not only was there an abundance of artisans, but the working conditions are humane. One of the first companies I visited had a flexible lunch break, which allowed workers to take longer breaks that could be made up at a later hour in the day so they could go home and dine with family. Colombian production facilities typically have music, recreational activities and food on the premises. I found this to be beyond civilized and I fell in love. This was an essential part of my vision.

As it was written in the stars, I studied design and began to work in all aspects of fashion. With growing concerns for excess and the environment, I stuck to my philosophy of purchasing investment pieces and avoiding trends –layering over seasonal items and concentrating on quality over quantity. I purchased a single-button black suit ten years ago. I remember it looked modern, yet from the past. I rationalized the cost by telling myself that if I ever got married, it would be perfect. In a strange series of events I was invited to five black-tie galas within in a two-month period. Each time I felt the same in my trusted black suit; accomplished, handsome, slender and successful. Artistically I changed my accessories, but for years to come it was my goto suit. I realized the importance of investing in quality. Once I calculated the cost per use, it became extremely practical.

My company prides itself in producing welldesigned, artfully constructed items in a happy work environment. Our price points can’t compare with the mass market but we hope over time our products will far surpass and find it’s place in the market. Fashion can have so many positive effects. It impacts the way we feel about ourselves. I was complimented on my physique recently. My initial thought was that I had so many cherished things that It was worth my efforts to maintain my size, which is what has kept me in the gym. So indirectly, fashion is not only my life’s work but it has preserved my life as well.

Success is a journey fueled by ambition. Ambition comes from our goals, which come from our dreams. And our dreams are often inspired by the progressive individuals we surround ourselves with.

My sister Karen, you are that individual, and I love you for it.

I’ve been a creative person from conception. Professionally, I would say the last 20 years sums it up. I would like to thank my mother for never questioning my decisions and always being in support of them, my sister whom I believe God speaks to me directly through. You are my number one supporter, my friend, my advisor, my insurance, my assurance, my oxygen. You certainly can’t choose your family but you are at liberty to create one. Sheri, you are my sister, Zelica, my daughter. Nigel, Ojay, Benton, I’ve never missed having a brother because you guys were always there. My artistic community –Mina you’re the original muse, Arkan, your friendship has literally captured my thoughts. Our bromance is forever documented. Fritzroy I would give you anything to fuel the fire that ignites your dreams. Sherlyn and Tavis, if I could find love like yours supported by synchronized talents I would look no further. Out experiences are like a jazz trio –harmonized and effective. Peter Tamlin: when I call with an idea, you always say ‘sure, come over’. You have no idea how special you are. Rohan Laylor, together we redefined “creative”. Stephen Caissie you come from such a pure place it makes working with you so easy. Char, all those fashion q&a’s that kept us on the phone for more than I’d like to admit kept my knowledge of the subject sharp and love you for it. Karine, when you smile and speak to me in that reassuring voice, it restores my confidence. Paula, the best thing you can do for someone is believe in them, and you do. Anotoinette and Anne-Marie, everyone knows if I were to have a wife, it would have been both of you, respectively. Glen Hines, when I pick up a scissors, I hope to use it with your precision. To all my favorite makeup artists: Aniya, Brandi, Sherlyn. My dinner girls: Liz B, Liz M, Michelle, Andrea and our unforgettable guest, Thomas White, good times!

Joyce Jones, I’ll never forget your kindness. Mealica VanHorne, you are my selfproclaimed wife, I’m not sure what I did to deserve you but I’m glad I got you. Marlene Allen, we have the best dates and I get a sense that we will always have them. Nick B, our moments far and few but I appreciate them. When I need a break –a moment to re-charge-, Carlos you are there to pick me up and make me forget about the journey. Stephan –you listen patiently Andre T- you gave me a key, told me not just to get over it, but to get on with it –“butch up” and remember you are fierce. Andrew F –can you follow me to the next level? And don’t worry, I’ll drive. Ron L you are so receptive, I have never had a bad moment in your presence. Shashu –you don’t just look out for me, you look after me. Mario –you have been my friend for the long haul. We have survived time and distance and even your move to Scarborough. But as long as you keep supplying the free food and advice, I’ll be there. Brenda –after moving next to you, who knew we would still be here loving and sharing. You are such a go-getter; I want to impress you one day. Alana I thank you. Yvonne, Wilma, you are my mothers in the chair. The Johnson Chou group, you are such amazing people. JC, you have redefined how I want to live. Shant, thanks for all your help and Silke for your smiles. I have had my heard broken more times than I would like to admit. Jason and Baba-Pierre, I now understand the line “ if somebody loves you, don’t they always love you?” I thank you both for loving me the way you do. I’m fortunate to have been blessed like this more than once in my lifetime. I have few regrets but with maturity I have learned. I have so many wonderful clients that it would be impossible to list them all, but you are loved and appreciated.
