CUBAN DANCE DAY PARTY This Sunday August 30 2015, The Living Well Center for Social and Economic Vibrancy is hosting Reuda de Casino Baltimore for a Cuban Dance Day Party! Oh, you haven’t heard? Rueda de Casino Baltimore is a moving force making waves all across the city and you need to make sure you’re not getting left behind! You may be wondering if this has something to do with gambling? Nope. It’s a dance. This friendly group has dancers of every age, every race, and every ability. Their mission is “to increase awareness, interest, and appreciation of Afro-Cuban music and dance in the Baltimore area and the Latin Dance community.” Originating in Cuba in the 1950s, Rueda de Casino typically consists of multiple couples performing synchronized moves in a circle, intermixed with frequent partner changes. Rueda is the Spanish word for wheel (dancing in a circle); casino is the Cuban term for the place that you would go to dance: the dance halls, not synonymous with the English definition of casino. No gambling involved! We’re already familiar with Sheena Black, Cher Jey, and Oscar Rousseaux, presenting us with the movements that define what it means to be Afro-Cuban at The Living Well. Let’s continue the momentum by participating in another popular Cuban dance style with those oh-so-familiar Latin beats that we’ve all come to love in salsa… The music RDCB brings will be like salsa, but with more… groove. Funk. Sabor! Fuakata from New York, will present an hour-long class at 4:00 pm, before open dancing begins and the hottest Son, Songo, Salsa Cubana and Timba will be played by none other than Dj-dola Yorubaontwo and RDCB's own TIMBA TITAN ! Cost: $12:00 cash
WELCOMING NEW COMMUNITY OUTREACH MANAGER NICOLA NORMAN TO THE LIVING WELL!
The Living Well welcomes its newest team member Nicola Norman to our vibrant Center as Community Outreach Manager. Nicola is a native of Cape Town, South Africa with roots also in Namibia in South West Africa. She was raised in the USA since the age of 7 months. With a background in Nutritional Science (Morgan State class of 2012), a passion for social change, culture, and sustainability, plus plenty of organizing and outreach experience, she is a natural fit with our team. She has lived in Baltimore for almost 10 years, moving here from the Bay Area. Since she touched down, she has been inspired, shaken, transformed, challenged, and deeply empowered by her experiences in Baltimore. Nicola has engaged community members of all ages, from pre- k to seniors in the realm of workshops and events as diverse as eating lifestyle education, food justice, organic gardening, vision crafting, cultural celebrations, and addressing intersectional issues of social inequities. Some of her roles have been as event coordinator and facilitator, moderator, as a speaker, artist, and working hands on with youth programs. Her biggest lessons have been through her own journey in revolutionizing her diet and lifestyle, and constantly pushing the limits of her comfort zone in her own life. She co-founded Morgan State University's first community garden in 2009, which has richly enhanced the Morgan State culture and the surrounding community, and is looking forward to continuing to build positive momentum in this city. Her mission is to raise the vibration in every space that she occupies, and to increase the access of empowering services and resources to individuals and communities in need. Nicola will work with all interested parties for booking inquiries, collaborations, promotions and events. Nicola can be reached directly admin@livewellbemore.com
