From the vision of Corradino d’Ascanio to the new electric frontier 3

It was 1946 when the first Vespa Piaggio was patented.

Italy had gone out badly from World War II and Enrico, one of the sons of Rinaldo Piaggio (founder of the well-known company), started the reconstruction of the Pontedera industrial plant, concentrating the production on individual mobility. Enrico’s intention was to create a vehicle for everyone, cheap and easy to use. He called in his aid the aeronautical engineer (my fellow countryman) Corradino d’Ascanio, designer of experimental models of helicopters, who particularly disliked motorcycles, judging them uncomfortable in the daily use. Hence, the ideal person to rethink the concept of motorcycle.

Corradino’s passion for flight was perhaps the reason why Vespa, with its shield bearing wings, seems to fly.

Responsive and dynamic, it became the symbol of a newfound freedom.

This scooter, although changing in technology, remains a timeless icon. Admired all over the world for its design, today it is exhibited in modern art museums from Milan to New York.

Vespa was composed of a supporting body that completely replaced the common chassis of motorcycles. The new structure allowed to easily saddle up and gave more room for the legs, protected by the front shield from dust and splashes. The low platform allowed to rest the feet, enabling the driver to assume a natural and elegant position, as if sitting in an armchair.

It also allowed driving without necessarily wearing 132

a jumpsuit, but even wearing elegant clothes. The gearbox on the handlebars made Vespa easier to use in the city and the spare wheel (present in the first models) gave a great help to those who drove the not exactly perfect streets of that period.

The wheels were smaller than those of a motorcycle: the rear protected by the bodywork fairing (but easy to replace, if necessary) and the front by a fender.

In the new vehicle there were all the good intentions of the design of the 1950s: its curved and ergonomic lines had a familiar aspect, because in that period they characterized almost all the objects of daily use, appliances, chairs, furniture or lamps.

The tendency to use soft lines inspired by nature can be attributed to the influence of the Scandinavian and organic design of the previous twenty years, distinguished by their approach to well-being and people’s quality of life.

The Scandinavian culture put nature first, departing from the idea of referring to the “machine” that created a barrier between industry and crafts; and Vespa seemed to merge with its surrounding environment, in perfect harmony with its driver and with the curves of the road.

Protagonist of the Dolce Vita, it adapted to the canons of the 1970s when it was marketed all over the world and its lines became sharper in accordance with those revolutionary times.

Over the years, the 50cc version, which could also be driven without license, was born, followed by the

Vespone, a more powerful and slightly bigger version.

In the 1980s, when design chased experimentation, Vespa adapted itself, again, to fashion, becoming not only a scooter, but also an accessory of style.

Today, in 2019, just few years from the 70th anniversary of Vespa, Piaggio, wanting to keep up with the times, presented Vespa Elettrica at the last Cycle and Motorcycle Show in Milan.

The electric is slowly replacing fossil and nonrenewable energy and with the constant development of eco-sustainable technologies there are always fewer deterrent factors to its use.

The bodywork of the new model is similar to the recent Vespa Primavera, differing for the colors and, obviously, for the absence of the muffler.

With an autonomy of 100 kilometers and a silent engine, this Vespa Elettrica has lost the classic rumble that has distinguished its history. This is in favor of the environment, while the driver only hears the rolling of the tires on the road surface.

What is certain is that of the original Vespa, or at least of the classic one, very little remains. The theme of the loss of the distinctive characteristics of Vespa over the years has already been dealt with in the past and controversies have already arisen against the changes into the mechanics: an example is the removal of the gearbox, as in the PK 125 Automatic version, or the engine conversion from a two-stroke to a four-stroke.

In the most up-to-date models, the transmission is automatic, even if in 2010 there was a return to the two-stroke engine and to manual transmission with the PX 150 (copy of the 1980s model) presented at the EICMA in Milan.

Piaggio’s position towards technology is certainly motivated by the desire to improve performance and efficiency, and, with electrics, the company wanted to demonstrate the ability to adapt itself to new market needs, especially with regard to the theme of ecology.

In the last few years we have increasingly talked about environmental impact and nowadays it is such an urgency to compel us to review many of the traditional ideas, typically futuristic, about the concepts of mobility, power and speed.

Vespa, however, from a sociological point of view, is not just shape: it represents an urban culture that was expressed in customization, in the choice of components, also from a mechanical point of view.

There is an emotional factor that has always been related to the vibrations, to the sound that the engine produces or to the simple noise of the transmission.

Many established bikers learned to drive going on a Vespa, they learned the functioning of manual transmission and tried to refine the curve trajectories.

Probably these are exactly the “wings under the feet” sung by the Lunapop (Italian pop group) back in 1999, or what made the Supergiovane of Elio e le Storie Tese (another Italian group) so “ironically” subversive towards the matusa (dialectal Milanese term to define the elderly that dates back to the 1960s) or the government.

In conclusion, we welcome the electric, we welcome the ecological, but we need to structure another culture that today is still immature, in order to be able to find the same poetry of the past.

La Vespa Piaggio.

Dalla visione di Corradino d’Ascanio alla nuova frontiera dell’elettrico Correva l’anno 1946, quando fu brevettata la prima Vespa Piaggio.

L’Italia usciva malmessa dal conflitto mondiale ed Enrico, uno dei figli di Rinaldo Piaggio (fondatore della ben nota azienda), si mobilitò per la ricostruzione dello stabilimento di Pontedera, concentrando la produzione verso la mobilità individuale. L’intenzione di Enrico era quella di creare un veicolo per tutti, economico e di facile utilizzo. Chiamò in suo aiuto l’ingegnere aeronautico (mio concittadino) Corradino d’Ascanio, progettista di modelli sperimentali di elicotteri, che aveva una particolare antipatia per le motociclette, giudicate scomode nel loro utilizzo quotidiano. La persona ideale, quindi, per ripensare il concetto di motociclo.

La passione per il volo di Corradino fu forse il motivo per il quale la Vespa, con il suo scudo che riporta a delle ali, sembra volare. Scattante e dinamica, divenne il simbolo della libertà ritrovata.

Questo scooter, pur modificandosi nella tecnologia, resta un’icona senza tempo. Ammirata da tutto il mondo per il suo design, oggi è esposta in musei di arte moderna da Milano a New York.

La Vespa si componeva di una scocca portante che sostituiva completamente il comune telaio delle motociclette. La nuova struttura permetteva di montare in sella facilmente e dava ampio spazio all’alloggio delle gambe, protette dallo scudo anteriore da polvere e schizzi. La bassa pedana consentiva di poggiare i piedi facendo assumere al guidatore una posizione naturale ed elegante, come se fosse seduto in poltrona.

Permetteva inoltre la guida senza necessariamente portare una tuta, ma anche indossando vestiti eleganti.

Il cambio sul manubrio ne facilitava di molto l’utilizzo in città e la ruota di scorta (presente nei primi modelli) dava un grande aiuto a chi percorreva le strade non proprio perfette del periodo.

Le ruote erano più piccole di quelle di una moto: la posteriore protetta dalla carenatura della carrozzeria (ma di facile sostituzione, in caso di necessità) e l’anteriore da un parafango.

Nel nuovo veicolo c’erano tutte le buone intenzioni del design anni Cinquanta: le sue linee curve ed ergonomiche avevano un aspetto familiare, perché in quel periodo caratterizzavano quasi tutti gli oggetti di uso quotidiano, gli elettrodomestici, le sedie, il mobilio o le lampade. Questa tendenza all’utilizzo di linee morbide ed ispirate alla natura è forse da attribuire all’influenza del design scandinavo e a quello organico del ventennio precedente, distinti dal loro approccio volto al benessere e alla qualità della vita.

La cultura scandinava metteva al primo posto la natura, discostandosi dall’idea di riferirsi alla “macchina” che creava una barriera fra l’industria e l’artigianato; e la Vespa pareva fondersi con l’ambiente [materials&interiors] 135

circostante, in perfetta armonia con il suo guidatore e con le curve della strada.

Protagonista della Dolce Vita, si adattò ai canoni degli anni Settanta del Novecento quando fu commercializzata in tutto il modo e le sue linee si fecero più spigolose assecondando i tempi rivoluzionari. Nacque, negli anni, la versione 50cc, che si poteva guidare anche senza patente, e più tardi il Vespone, versione più potente e di poco più grande.

Negli anni Ottanta, quando nel design si inseguiva la sperimentazione, si adattò di nuovo alla moda divenendo non solo scooter, ma accessorio di stile.

A pochi anni dal settantesimo anniversario della nascita della Vespa, oggi, nel 2019, la Piaggio ha voluto essere al passo con i tempi, presentando, all’ultimo salone del Ciclo e del Motociclo di Milano, la Vespa Elettrica.

L’elettrico sta lentamente soppiantando l’energia fossile e non rinnovabile e con lo sviluppo costante delle tecnologie ecosostenibili si hanno sempre meno fattori deterrenti al suo utilizzo.

La scocca del nuovo modello è simile alla recente Vespa Primavera, differenziandosene per i colori e, ovviamente, per l’assenza della marmitta.

Con un’autonomia di cento chilometri e un motore silenzioso, questa Vespa Elettrica ha perso il classico rombo che ne ha contraddistinto la storia.

Ne guadagna la qualità dell’ambiente, mentre il conducente ascolta solo il rotolamento degli pneumatici sul manto stradale.

Certo è che della Vespa originale, o per lo meno di quella classica, rimane ben poco. Il tema della perdita negli anni dei caratteri distintivi della Vespa è stato già affrontato in passato e sono già sorte polemiche nei confronti dei cambiamenti alla meccanica: un esempio è la rimozione del cambio, come nella versione PK 125 Automatica, o la conversione del motore da due tempi a quattro tempi. Nei modelli più attuali il cambio è automatico, anche se nel 2010 c’è stato un ritorno al motore a due tempi e al cambio manuale con la PX 150 (copia di quella anni Ottanta) presentata all’EICMA di Milano.

La posizione di Piaggio nei confronti della tecnologia è sicuramente motivata dal desiderio di migliorare le prestazioni e l’efficienza, e con l’elettrico l’azienda ha

voluto dimostrare la capacità di adattarsi alle nuove esigenze del mercato, soprattutto sul tema dell’impatto ambientale di cui si parla sempre più negli ultimi anni e che ha ormai un’urgenza tale da costringere a rivedere molte delle tradizionali idee, tipicamente futuriste, sul concetto di mobilità, potenza e velocità.

La Vespa però, dal punto di vista sociologico, non è soltanto forma: rappresenta una cultura urbana che si è espressa nella customizzazione, nella scelta dei componenti, anche dal punto di vista meccanico. C’è un fattore emozionale che è sempre stato relativo alle vibrazioni, al sound che produce il motore o al semplice rumore del cambio; molti motociclisti affermati hanno imparato a guidare andando in Vespa, hanno appreso il funzionamento del cambio manuale e tentato di perfezionare le traiettorie di curva. Forse sono proprio queste le “ali sotto ai piedi” cantate dai Lunapop (gruppo pop italiano) nel lontano 1999, o quello che ha reso il Supergiovane di Elio e le Storie Tese (altro gruppo italiano) così “ironicamente” sovversivo nei confronti dei matusa (termine dialettale milanese per definire gli anziani che risale agli anni Sessanta) o del governo.

Ben venga l’elettrico, ben venga l’ecologico, ma bisogna strutturare un’altra cultura che oggi è ancora acerba per riuscire a ritrovare la stessa poesia del passato.
