Open oproep 20_19 Ursulinen Internship @ Label Architecture Program: school, landscape, competition Project: Ursulinen School Where: Mechelen (Belgium) Year: 2011 Tutor: Michel Lefèvre, Thibaut Rome Ursulinen school is a Christian school situated in the historical city center of Mechelen. It is composed by a kindergarten, a primary and a secondary school. The project has to allow students to follow a sort of continuity and global coherence. The masterplan presents several changes: new buildings implanting, ancient buildings renovations et restauration of the common spaces. The general idea is to create a succession from kindergarden to secondary school. Inside the project drawing, the office keeps the idea to insert big openings to low density. This basic masterplan as well as the global budget, ecological and architectural practices have deeply influenced the choise for the position of the buildings. Tha A phase is built inside the urban parcel and it is the biggest one.The B phase indicates the entry to the urban parcel and it is quite narrow. Globally, the two buildings perimeters find themselves into the ancient parcel.

SPIKE KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture Program: landscape, multifunctional Project: Ursulinen School Where: Gent (Belgium) Year: 2012-13 Semester: I Teacher: Wim Goes, Catherine MengĂŠ, Gisele Gantois To create a connection between the noise, topography, views and sound, I created a garden on the slope towards the railway at this backside in Dampoort. As trains pass by, the plants move with the train. When the train is passed, these flowers come back to rest. As I use the height of different plants to level the topography, the slope becomes much more gradual. A strong border gets softened by the use of plants. As the plot is a passage from the street, I lay pathways into this field. Per season these pathways change, since behavior of people also changes trough the seasons. So you can be in the garden, in different perspectives, in different times of the year. This changes the garden in this way that you are actively aware of nature. It is thus much more then just nature as ornament, but as a part of ourselves.

As the site is located on a backside, it is kind of hidden. There is some kind of calm atmosphere around this hiddenness, so it is important not to destroy it. But at the same time this place should be discovered as well. By placing mirrors at carefully picked locations, I connect views, lift borders and create landmarks.

The Hybrid building

KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture (LUCA) Program: swimming pools, offices, multifunctional, hybrid Project: OFFICES&POOLS Where: Brussels (Belgium) Year: 2013-2014 Semester: I Teacher: Dieter de Vos, Bram Aerts, Patrick Moyersoen OFFICES&POOLS is my answer to the complex urbanized environment of Brussels. It mainly introduces a simple and beautiful silhouette in a very dense location of the city. A perfect design, compact and unconventional, combines swimming pools, thermal baths, offices, canteens with public urban void, while a main core runs fluently the accessibility from the bottom to the top of the building. So people can benefit of public and private spaces at the same time. The project is made up of a complete range of functions: thermal baths and parking lots underground; an olympic pool, a main hall and ticket area on the ground floor; a teaching pool for children and a canteen on the first floor; several offices from the 3rd to the 16th floor and a magnificent diving pool at the top.

Manufacturing on the Creek

KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture (LUCA) Program: multifunctional Project: Manufacturing cluster Where: Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City (USA) Year: 2014 Semester: II Teacher: Kris Scheerlinck Coney Island Creek appears today as a fragile, complex but fervent environment, offering an high potential of urban and architectural rethink. Our role as architects is to understand this place and find the rights solutions to improve it. Reconnecting this landscape of ‘unsureness’ can represent a better way for citizens to work and live in the area. Focusing on what already exists, how can we redevelop the abandoned industrial heritage and convert it to a contemporary use? What should be maintained and what destroyed? How can we boost and increase the manufacturing system, employ workforce and provide jobs in the car repairing sector? Which can be a new way of reconfigure it dealing with the existent urban tissue? How will these interventions face water challenges and become flood proof? Will we be able to involve a community collaboration for the pursuit of a deeper redevelopment?

12

My architectural intervention helps to create an environmental, cultural and social sustainable future. Environmetally, facing water challenge issues and proposing floodproof solutions, from adaptable and elevated ground floors, to floodwalls and coastal dunes; choosing a dry construction system, already diffused in the United States, through steel and precast reinforced concrete sorrounded by standard bricks, which allows guaranteed quality and low energy consumption; proposing a strategic plan into a time dimension. Culturally, re-thinking the all project to develop the existent industrial, automobile and maritime heritages. Socially, enhancing the manufacturing activity spread around Coney Island Creek; boosting and increasing the car repairing sector to employ workforce and provide jobs. Through these three main thematic imputs, the project represents a better way for citizens to work and live a quite negletted area of Coney Island.

Trade, commerce, administrative activities, a training center and a canteen are connected in a sort of manufacturing ‘ensemble’. Here these are organized as being always related one to each other for a new functionament of the manufacturing process as well as for the improvement and enhancement of the existing processes already on site. Thus, the new proposal consists in three main buildings perfectly inserted in the context. Looking at each other, they create new perspectives and relations among them as well as with the existent situation. There is a close use of non built space among the interventions, where activties such as stock, exposition, sell or trade, mixed with existent production acitivties are now directed or organized constantly during the working day time. Referring to Leonardo Da Vinci’s invention in the Ideal City, an integrated system of connected canals, upper and lower areas and porticos were seprating the all city in two levels. Here, in Coney Island, the intervention intends to blend the two levels, as pasarelas and belvederes blend create a second system of collective space, allowing the outside ground floor to become a space for machines and the first floor as a space for people.

MNA, together with CONIX RDM Architects and BUUR was awarded second prize-winner of the ECAM site masterplan competition. This urban design + architecture competition aimed to develop innovative proposals for the former ECAM school campus in Saint-Gilles improving public and collective spaces and implementing a school, nursery and sport facilities in one of the most densely populated area in Brussels. This competition was launched in summer 2014 by the municipality of Saint-Gilles in the context of the Contrat de Quartier Durable Bosnie.

Exhibition bMa: Man of Thoughts

Collaboration with plusoffice architects and bMa team Program: Exhibition Project: Installation Where: Brussels, Belgium Year: 2014 Supervisors: Ward Verbakel, Olivier Bastin During the summer 2014 I have been collaborating with the firm plusoffice architects and the bMa team for an exhibition about achitecture in Brussels (Belgium). As Olivier Bastin’s term in office as the first head architect (bMa) of the Brussels Capital Region came to an end, the exhibition looked back at the past five years, in his characteristic style, as a thinker, an architect, and as the Brussels head architect. The exhibition at a symbolical location brought together a selection of key projects and an array of installations. If offered insights from prominent people from Brussels and sheds light on the atmosphere of the bMa’s own work. A symbolic place as the reconstruction of the building by Austrian architects Baumschlager Eberle sparks debate in terms of preservation of modernist heritage in Brussels.
