OUTDOOR LIVING
By Christy Poché
Warmer weather and longer days are here in Middle Tennessee. It is the time of year people are searching for activities that will get them out of their homes and into the great outdoors. Some choose to visit state parks or other natural areas to enjoy the waterfalls, a hike, or camping. Many choose to frequent nearby lakes and rivers to enjoy fishing, boating, or swimming. While these activities are adventurous and exciting, having time to relax and enjoy family and friends in the backyard is appealing and convenient to many homeowners.

While spending time in the backyard, it is always satisfying to have a comfortable and attractive space to appreciate the season. Outdoor living spaces have gained popularity in recent years and are showing no signs of slowing down. As more homeowners seek ways to create a cozy and functional outdoor living area, enabling them to enjoy the convenience of their own backyard, here are six tips to consider when designing such a space.
Tip 1
Create continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. Creating a cohesive transition from your indoor space to your outdoor space is important to ensure that both areas feel connected. They should be a seamless extension of each other. To achieve continuity, focus on having the same interior design style. If the home is a colonial design, it is suggested to incorporate furniture composed of wood or metal with classic lines. If the home is a modern design, select furniture with clean lines and composed of metal, resin, or rope material. In addition to choosing complementary furniture pieces, keep the same color palette for both spaces. Consider using sliding or folding doors to connect the indoor to the outdoor space. It will create a physical connection between the areas and feel more natural.
Tip 2
Consider the size and shape of the space. This will determine the layout. Select furniture pieces that will fit the size of the outdoor area. When too large furniture is used, the area appears heavy and small, but when the appropriately sized furniture is selected, it can appear larger than its square footage.
Tip 3
Determine the functionality of the space. Early in the process figure out how the space will be used. Once that is determined, appropriate furniture pieces can be chosen. For example, if the space is used for outdoor dining, a dining table and chairs will be a priority. If the space is used to lounge and enjoy the evening, a comfortable sofa and lounge chairs will be the most favorable choice.
Tip 4
Build in landscaping. A well-landscaped outdoor living space can enhance the overall appearance of the home and transform it into an appealing and functional outdoor sanctuary. Consider adding shrubs, flowers, and trees to provide color and texture to the area. Hedges can also be used strategically to create a privacy screen and the landscaping will provide shade to the space as well as create habitats for birds and other wildlife.
Tip 5
Add lighting to the space. Determine what the lighting needs will be for the space. For example, choosing to add lighting to the patio area, walkways, and garden will provide both safety and atmosphere. Lighting enhances the beauty of the outdoor living space and highlights landscaping features or architectural elements. It also adds ambiance for those al fresco dinners under the stars.
Tip 6
Include unique touches to the space. Finish off the space by adding unique elements and accessories. A water fountain is a great addition to a backyard. It provides an added visual interest while creating a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. One may consider adding the element of fire to their space, such as a fire pit. It is a great way to enhance an area while providing warmth, light, and a cozy atmosphere with family and friends. Additional items that can be added to an outdoor space include an outdoor area rug, pillows, throw blankets, and artwork. All these additions will add personality and uniqueness to the space.
Outdoor living space offers an extension of your living area. Designing and watching an outdoor space come to life is a fun and rewarding process, and it provides a versatile and pleasant space where you can relax, entertain, and make the most of your outdoor surroundings. Just as you would spend time and effort making the decisions for the inside of your home, be sure to make that same effort designing your outdoor space. If you do, that designated outdoor space will offer years of pure enjoyment for your family and friends!
