Inthe heart of historic downtown Columbia, Tennessee, a once unassuming 19thcentury building now houses a vibrant oasis of creativity and expression Gallery 48. Founded by Joanna Kica, the gallery has quickly become a hot spot for art enthusiasts and a testament to Kica’s lifelong passion for the arts. Her journey from Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, to the welcoming streets of Columbia is as rich and varied as the pieces lining the walls of her gallery.
Growing up in Krakow, Kica’s childhood was steeped in art. School trips to museums, art galleries, theaters, and operas were not just occasional treats but regular occurrences that laid the foundation for a profound appreciation of the arts. The city itself, with its intact medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, offered a living museum experience. Walking through Krakow’s old town visiting its churches and historic buildings, one cannot help but breathe in the essence of history. This environment nurtured Kica’s innate love for artistic expression.
Kica’s career aspirations prompted her to earn her law degree at Krakow’s prestigious Jagiellonian University, the oldest law faculty in Poland whose history dates back to 1364. A short while after, a serendipitous reunion would alter the course of her life. During one of his visits back to Krakow, Kica reconnected with Peter, a childhood friend who had since moved to the United States. Their renewed connection quickly blossomed into love, prompting her to move to the United States later marrying Peter.
This leap of faith marked the beginning of a new chapter in Kica’s life. From visiting galleries and exhibitions to collecting unique pieces during their travels, art brought them closer together. Throughout their marriage, it has remained a shared passion that she and her husband cherish deeply. They often spent weekends exploring galleries and exhibitions immersing themselves in the creative worlds of various art mediums. Their home is adorned with an eclectic collection of pieces gathered over the years, each a testament to their adventures with a memory made and a story behind it.
This mutual appreciation inspired Kica to one day create a space where others could experience the same joy and connection. Unbeknownst to her at the time, the groundwork for owning her art gallery had been long laid, decades in the making. Their love story, seamlessly intertwined with their passion for art, is an integral part of the spirit of Gallery 48.
When Kica moved to the United States in 2005, she earned her master’s degree in public and health administration and worked as a researcher for Michigan State University for over 13 years. In the summer of 2022, a new work opportunity for her husband prompted their family to relocate to Tennessee. With this pending move, she sensed a shift in her professional life. At a crossroads in her career, Kica saw this as the ideal timing and perfect opportunity to pivot and finally pursue her dream of opening an art gallery.
Upon her first visit to Columbia a few years ago, Kica fell in love with the town and was thrilled to secure the perfect space for her gallery in a historic building in the heart of Columbia. Gallery 48 opened its doors in the fall of 2023, initially representing seven international artists, two Tennessee artists, and one artist from Michigan. Gallery 48 also features a variety of beautiful and unique artisan handmade products, including jewelry, leather handbags and accessories, ceramics, pottery, glass art, and wood art. These products are made locally as well as in other countries.
The collection at the gallery has grown since first opening, now showcasing seven local Columbia artists, eight Tennessee artists from surrounding areas, two Michigan artists, artists from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and seven international artists. Kica’s ongoing commitment to discovering and promoting new talent allows her to consistently expand the gallery’s roster of artisans, regularly introducing fresh talent to Columbia.
One of the unique aspects of Gallery 48 is the personal touch Kica brings to her curation process. She traveled across Europe to meet each artist she represented, carefully selecting them for their distinctive styles and expressions. This dedication to personal connection ensures the gallery’s collection is not only diverse but also deeply meaningful.
Kica’s passion for art extends beyond her professional endeavors. Throughout her travels, she has always made it a point to visit art galleries, often bringing back pieces that connected with her. These personal experiences with art enriched her life and informed her vision for Gallery 48. Kica’s goal is to create a space where art lovers can find inspiration and connection, much like she has throughout her life.
Gallery 48 is more than just a venue for displaying art, it is the perfect setting for fostering connections and nurturing creativity. The gallery hosts various events, including artist meet-and-greets and exhibitions, helping share a vibrant artistic community in Columbia. Kica is thrilled to be a part of the wonderfully supportive and welcoming community and looks forward to being part of the evolution of the growing art scene in Columbia for years to come.
As she reflects on her journey from Krakow to Columbia, Kica sees Gallery 48 as the culmination of her lifelong passion for encouraging creativity and cultural exchange. It is a space where the rich heritage of her Polish roots meets the welcoming spirit of her new home. Through her gallery, Kica aims to share her love of the arts with the Columbia community and beyond, creating a lasting impact on the local cultural landscape. n
Gallery 48 is located at 107 West 7th Street in downtown Columbia, Tennessee. For additional information visit gallery48.art and follow them on social media at @gallery48.art. Whether you are an avid art collector or a casual admirer, a visit to Gallery 48 promises an experience that is both enriching and inspiring to all!

Thisholiday season give your family one of the best gifts possible financial security. As we approach these festive months and the new year, take a moment to slow down and ponder your financial situation in today’s rapidly changing economic environment.
Whether you want to explore retirement saving options, plan for your children’s college education, or take a lavish trip around the world in your golden years, a trusted fiduciary has your best interest in mind. Certified Financial Planner Allen Buckley, founder of Paragon in Franklin, knows that planning for the future is the best Christmas present you will ever give yourself and your family.
Buckley has over two decades of experience in finance serving the unique needs of highnet-worth and ultra-high-net-worth families. As a certified financial planner and fiduciary, he specializes in helping clients achieve their financial goals, tailored to their individual circumstances and aspirations.
Having previously held the position of vice president at Goldman Sachs, Buckley gained invaluable insights into managing wealth for discerning clients. During his tenure at Goldman Sachs, he worked with individual clients and families helping to navigate complex financial landscapes and tailoring bespoke financial solutions.
In today’s complex financial environment, simplistic wealth management strategies are not enough. Striving for strong, after-tax returns while simultaneously managing risk is not always suited to a one-size-fits-all approach. Paragon focuses on customized strategies grounded in data-driven insights and expert analysis. This level of sophistication is typically reserved for the largest global banks.
As a former vice president in personal financial management at the world’s leading investment bank, Buckley, managing partner at Paragon, applied advanced, custom strategies daily to strive for superior client outcomes. Buckley also recognized that many individual investors miss out on this level of advice because they often turn to smaller fiduciary advisors who may lack the necessary resources and expertise.
Paragon endeavors to combine institutional-level expertise with the personalized service of an independent provider. This approach has led to an offering that merges advanced strategies of the big firms with the one-on-one, individualized attention of a smaller firm.
During his time at one of the world’s top investment banks, Buckley recognized a significant gap in the industry. He enjoyed the challenge of helping the ultra-wealthy achieve their financial aspirations, but he couldn’t ignore the shortcomings of this business model. According to Buckley, “The sophisticated strategies and resources available at these large institutions were often inaccessible to many investors. Additionally, the inherent conflicts of interest within these behemoth banks often led to advice that wasn’t always in the client’s best interest.”
THE SOPHISTICATED STRATEGIES AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE AT THESE LARGE INSTITUTIONS WERE OFTEN INACCESSIBLE TO MANY INVESTORS. ADDITIONALLY, THE INHERENT CONFLICTS OF INTEREST WITHIN THESE BEHEMOTH BANKS OFTEN LED TO ADVICE THAT WASN’T ALWAYS IN THE CLIENT’S BEST INTEREST.
Motivated by the desire to bring a more disciplined approach to a broader range of high-net-worth investors, Buckley set out to create something different. He founded Paragon with a clear vision to offer the best of both worlds. The definition of a paragon is an exact replication of excellence, and that is exactly what the firm strives to create.
By combining their extensive experience in creating tailored solutions with personalized attention and fiduciary commitment, Buckley and the Paragon team established a firm that provides a unique offering. Instead of just focusing on investment and financial planning, the firm provides comprehensive private wealth management. In addition, they coordinate with clients’ professionals to help optimize estate planning, tax planning, and tax preparation solutions all with the aim of producing better results.
Private Wealth Management That Puts Clients First Buckley founded Paragon with the conviction that clients deserve more than standardized financial advice — they deserve the same care and expertise usually reserved for the ultra-wealthy. But too often, these more sophisticated offerings are inaccessible for most individuals, leaving investors to rely on mass-market strategies.
With deep experience from one of the world’s top investment banks, their team brings high-level expertise to their practice. They combine that with personal service to help clients feel confident about their financial future.
n You, our client, are the center of our business, we do not exist without you. Therefore, our advice and investment management are tailored to you and your financial situation. You should expect nothing less.
n In excellence it is the definition of Paragon. Because of this, we strive for excellence in every aspect of our relationship with you. In our communication with you to the custom-tailored investment strategies we offer and all areas in between.
n In truth and transparency and that the clientadvisor relationship operates in a spirit of clarity and honesty. This includes the fees we charge all fees are disclosed and we do not accept hidden compensation.
n That all clients have different value sets and that your values should be reflected in the investments you own. We will customize your portfolio to include or exclude companies based on your values.
n That when you hire us to help you achieve your goals, you’re hiring teammates to run alongside you in your financial endeavors, and it is our job to formulate and implement those goals for you and your family.
AT PARAGON, WE LEVERAGE OUR INSTITUTIONAL EXPERTISE TO HELP YOUR MONEY DO MORE FOR YOU. WE DON’T BELIEVE IN ONE-SIZEFITS-ALL APPROACHES INSTEAD OFFERING ADVANCED FINANCIAL PLANNING AND INVESTMENT STRATEGIES TAILORED TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.
— ALLEN BUCKLEY
Basic strategies can be a great way for new investors to build a foundation. But as wealth grows, relying on cookie-cutter approaches could mean missing out on opportunities or leaving assets vulnerable to market downturns. Buckley said, “At Paragon, we leverage our institutional expertise to help your money do more for you. We don’t believe in onesize-fits-all approaches — instead offering advanced financial planning and investment strategies tailored to help you achieve your goals.”
Along with customized strategies, the Paragon team collaborates with tax and legal professionals to find what works best for client needs. This may include advanced structures like trusts, permanent life insurance, or asset protection strategies designed to safeguard resources.
Young investors with few assets may benefit from the diversification of a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF) strategy. But as wealth grows, it means paying two layers of management fees — one to an advisor and another to the fund managers. These additional fees create a constant drag on returns. Buckley explained, “My approach is using individual stocks in our client portfolios, to help reduce overall costs and potentially minimize tax liability.”
Paragon tailors portfolios to reflect personal values and preferences. If there are industries you prefer to avoid, they will customize holdings to align with your beliefs. At Paragon, their motto is wealth management without compromise. n

Pound cake has a rich history dating back to 18th century Europe where it originated. The name pound cake comes from the original recipe that called for a pound of flour, butter, sugar, and eggs making the recipe easy to remember and prepare.
To this day, pound cake has maintained its popularity due to its rich buttery flavor and versatility. It can be served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or accompanied by fruit whipped cream or other toppings. Some bakeries offer seasonal pound cake flavors like Florida Key lime in May or pumpkin in November. No matter what your preference is, this cream cheese pound cake is the best!

RENOWNED PHYSICIANS DEDICATE THEIR PRACTICE TO JUST 50 FAMILIES FOR THE MOST EXCLUSIVE MEDICAL EXPERIENCE
MD²(pronounced MD squared), considered the pioneer and definitive provider of concierge medicine, has opened its first primary care office in Nashville. Known as the most exclusive medical experience, MD² delivers personalized healthcare, without compromise, which is tailored to you and your family through the dedicated care of a worldclass physician. Two distinguished Nashville internists, Dr. Jan Price, and Dr. Matthew Miller, will care for just 50 families each, allowing unparalleled personalized care.
BEING ABLE TO ACCOMPANY PATIENTS TO COMPLICATED CONSULTATION VISITS WITH SPECIALISTS IS VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT IN TODAY’S MEDICAL LANDSCAPE. AS AN MD² PHYSICIAN, IT’S ONE OF THE THINGS I VALUE MOST AS IT ALLOWS ME TO HELP FACILITATE A COMPREHENSIVE CARE PLAN FOR MY PATIENTS.
DR. MATTHEW MILLER
The unrivaled ratio of one physician taking care of just 50 families allows Drs. Price and Miller the luxury of time, giving every patient their full attention. Dr. Price has been a physician for the last 27 years and is best known for her unwavering commitment to delivering compassionate care. “I am often asked what’s different about MD²,” said Dr. Price. “Honestly, there is no comparison. In caring for just 50 families, I now have the time to care for my patients at a level that is usually reserved for one’s own family. I can give them my time, attention, and advocacy, and that is just so powerful in medicine.”
Dr. Miller, a highly respected physician in Nashville for more than two decades, is lauded for his clinical acumen, empathetic approach to medicine, and devotion to teaching and mentoring. “Being able to accompany patients to complicated consultation visits with specialists is virtually non-existent in today’s medical landscape,” explained Dr. Miller. “As an MD² physician, it’s one of the things I value most as it allows me to help facilitate a comprehensive care plan for my patients.”
I AM OFTEN ASKED WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT MD². HONESTLY, THERE IS NO
COMPARISON. IN CARING FOR JUST 50 FAMILIES, I NOW HAVE THE TIME TO CARE FOR MY PATIENTS AT A LEVEL THAT IS USUALLY RESERVED FOR ONE’S OWN FAMILY.
At MD² in Nashville, there are no waiting rooms as no other patients are scheduled at one’s appointment time. The Green Hills office has been designed as an extension of a personal home, elegantly appointed with custom-made artwork, exquisite millwork, tile, and marble. Each MD² physician is available to patients day or night and is personally involved in all healthcare decisions and even accompanies them to specialist consultations. In addition, MD² provides a unique national network that facilitates access to world-class specialists at the most renowned medical institutions across the country as well as the ability to be cared for if you become ill while traveling.
“Our doctors have the ability to practice medicine in an ideal environment, developing close personal relationships and collaborating with our national network of other MD² physicians,” said Sean Kell, CEO of MD². “It is a tremendous gift for them to care for their patients as they would for their own families. This is healthcare as it should be with zero compromises.”
MD² was founded in 1996, by Dr. Howard Maron, former team doctor for the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics and prominent Seattle/ Bellevue, Washington physician. Dr. Maron found it increasingly difficult to keep up with traditional medicine’s demanding pace, challenging extraordinary quality care. He asked himself what it
would mean to practice “medicine in the ideal?” and pioneered MD², the first retainer-based medical service, which launched the concept called concierge medicine. The company deliberately limited the practice to just 50 families per physician so that doctors could care for each patient as they would for their family members. MD² continues to mindfully recruit world-renowned primary care physicians, all graduating with distinction from the top medical schools. Today, there are 26 practices in 20 major cities, allowing for the most elite network of primary care physicians with the farthest-reaching specialist network in the country.
At the heart of MD², is the doctor/patient relationship. You are one of just 50 families who retain the services of a personal physician who knows you as well as their own family. MD² provides complete primary care and support which is covered by a monthly fee to ensure absolute, unlimited access to your physician, as well as their physician partner, and covers all care and services provided by the office.
Dr. Price and Dr. Miller look forward to the opportunity to care for your family. If you are interested in the most personal medical care available in Nashville, reach out to MD² by phone at (615) 747-1447 or email them at nashville-info@md2.com. Thebase of a good meal can come from the simplest of ingredients. Using good quality, simple flavors will elevate your meal. For most of us, we reach for spices and herbs to flavor our dishes. The quality of those spices can vary greatly and alter the flavor profile of your dish. If you can grow and dry your own, that is fantastic. However, in today’s busy world, it is more realistic to reach for dried spices from our cabinets.
While a great way to impart flavor, you may not know what is in that little jar. Dried spices can be high in heavy metals and pesticides. The lack of regulation on dried spices, which primarily come from other countries, makes it a lot of work for you to research and source good simple spices. We are here to simplify that for you!
Spices are the place to start simplifying your pantry. Buying organic, single-sourced spices puts you on your way to doing just that. You can control the spices even further by blending your own seasonings. When you want Italian seasoning, taco seasoning, etc., don’t buy a pre-blended jar with anti-caking agents. Use organic spices to blend your own. You will not only control what you are eating, but your dish will taste better too. Be sure to check out our favorite sources of spices in the links provided.

You may have always thought of spices as just a flavor profile for your recipes, but let’s not bypass their amazing nutritional qualities. By taking control of your spice cabinet and choosing high-quality, organic spices, you are also giving your meals a powerful dose of nutrition. Let’s discuss a few of our favorite holiday spices mentioned in the previous mixes.
Cardamom: You may have used this on occasion in baked goods or had it in Indian dishes, but my top choice is good ole chai tea along with the complementary spices of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, black pepper, and star anise. Cardamom’s list of health benefits is quite lengthy, but it is mostly shown to improve blood pressure, dental health, digestion, and of course inflammation as it is in the turmeric and ginger family.
Nutmeg: Popular in some fall-inspired desserts and even curry dishes, this powerhouse is one of my favorites that should really get more attention. Nutmeg contains antioxidant compounds that fight cellular damage. The word anti-inflammatory has also had a lot of attention over the last few years and spices like nutmeg, turmeric, and ginger all play a dynamic role in bringing down inflammation found in our bodies from toxins in our environment, food, etc.
Sage: This one we all see at our Thanksgiving meals. I know my grandmother loaded sage into our dressing, or stuffing as some say, and there is no way in my mind to have Thanksgiving without the entire container of sage being used. Sage is a powerful healer for the brain, improving its function and memory. No wonder sage is tied to the meaning of wisdom.
A comforting dish you should try to experience some flavorful spices is split pea curry stew with rice. It is loaded with nutritional value and has a rich warm depth of flavor from all the spices used, like curry, turmeric, ginger, and garlic. This creamy textured meal is perfect for the cool weather during the holidays and is sure to satisfy.
Huge shout out to my spice expert and dear friend, Barbara Laffey, for partnering with me on this article. Barbara has a master’s in food technology, specializing in governmental regulations. She currently practices as a global commercial director for an ingredient manufacturer. n

When it comes to creating a space or outfit that feels luxurious, stylish, and comfortable, the magic lies in mastering the art of layering. Whether you’re designing the perfect living room or pulling together a chic winter look, it’s all about choosing the right foundation and building up with thoughtful, quality elements. In both home design and fashion, layers add depth, texture, and personality, allowing for a more cohesive and polished result. As we step into the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to refine both your home and your wardrobe and find holiday gift ideas that reflect this approach.
The foundation of a well-designed room or wardrobe lies in the thoughtful use of variety in texture. When looking for those essential starting pieces, it is important to focus on items that set the tone for the overall design.
In your interiors, combining materials like velvet, linen, and wool adds depth and interest. Picture a velvet sofa paired with a wool throw or linen curtains framing a cozy space. Adding texture variety to your wardrobe is also essential. Using fabrics such as a silk blouse with a chunky knit sweater or a leather jacket creates a visually dynamic and polished look.
The balance of neutral and bold when it comes to color and pattern is essential to creating both a well-designed room and a stylish wardrobe. While color is making a huge resurgence in home decor and fashion, neutrals remain crucial for providing balance and sophistication. Neutrals act as a calming backdrop, giving the eye a place to rest while allowing bold accents to shine without overwhelming the space. Incorporate richer colors in your art, rugs, or draperies to add energy to your already subdued color palette.
The same applies to fashion — be adventurous with bold prints or trending colors, pairing them with classic black pants or your favorite jeans to keep your look polished and professional.
Statement pieces have the power to transform both a room and an outfit. In interiors, adding one or two bold elements — like an oversized piece of art, a patterned chair, or a unique light fixture — can instantly anchor the space and infuse it with character. Often, these pieces become the inspiration for the entire room’s design. The same concept applies to fashion. Even in a casual outfit, incorporating a standout accessory, such as statement jewelry, striking footwear, or a beautifully crafted handbag or coat, elevates your look, adding sophistication and personality to an otherwise simple ensemble.
However, when bringing in a statement piece, attention to detail is just as important. A striking piece should not overshadow the room or outfit but rather complement it. Small elements like decorative hardware, beautiful trims and tapes, and mixed media such as leather or subtle print accents add a personalized touch. These details create a sense of uniqueness and refinement in both your space and wardrobe. Thoughtfully placed, they enhance the overall design, ensuring that every piece works together harmoniously to elevate your style without overwhelming the senses.
• Luxurious fabrics like silk and linen
• Sculptural decor and trays for shelves and tables
• Elegant lamps and bold lighting fixtures
• Year-round decor staples
• Stylish, cozy loungewear
• Belts, jewelry, and scarves for polished looks
• Cozy statement pieces
• Practical gifts with decor appeal
Each room in the home should not only be beautiful, but it must also function seamlessly for your lifestyle and needs. One doesn’t have to trump the other — function and style can coexist harmoniously.
Today’s design solutions offer endless ways to create practical spaces that remain visually stunning. A design professional excels at finding those perfect dual-functioning pieces that meet both needs. For example, custom built-ins can provide hidden storage while showcasing decorative elements. Multi-functional furniture, like an ottoman that doubles as storage or a chic sofa bed, adds flexibility without sacrificing style. Thoughtful layouts, layered lighting, and durable yet beautiful fabrics ensure your home looks polished while working for your everyday life.
The same principle applies to your wardrobe. A well-tailored blazer transitions from office to evening, and a stylish tote offers elegance with everyday practicality. High-quality, multifunctional pieces in both your space and closet ensure you live with style and ease.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens
This timeless classic was first published in 1843. Dickens' novella tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter, miserly old man who despises Christmas and human kindness. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him to change his ways. Throughout the night, three spirits the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come show Scrooge visions of his life, the impacts of his greed, and the lonely, grim future that awaits him if he doesn't reform.
Scrooge’s transformation from miser to warmhearted benefactor is the ultimate Christmas redemption story, making it a must-read every holiday season.
Clement Clarke Moore
First published anonymously in a newspaper in 1823, this Christmas classic is a poem depicting a visit on Christmas Eve from Santa Claus. Also known as “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” the rhyming verses share the narrator’s magical imagery as Santa enters the house through the chimney and fills the children’s stockings with gifts. Described as jolly and plump, Santa delivers his presents quietly before disappearing into the night, calling out "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!" The poem is famous for shaping modern depictions of Santa and his festive traditions. A perfect read for the entire family!
J.R.R. Tolkien

Every December an envelope with a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for Tolkien’s children from Father Christmas. The wonderful tales share about life at the North Pole. From the reindeer that got loose to an accident-prone Polar Bear, or how there were wars with the troublesome goblins that lived beneath the house. The letters showcase the magic and joy of Christmas in a deeply personal way through the creativity of a father to his children. A delightful read for both children and adults.
by O. Henry
O. Henry’s classic tale, published in 1905, captures the true spirit of Christmas giving. This short story tells the tale of a young impoverished couple, Jim and Della, who each sacrifice their most prized possessions to buy a meaningful Christmas present for the other. Della sells her long beautiful hair and Jim sells his prized pocket watch. When the couple exchange gifts on Christmas Eve they discover what each has done and realize the true spirit of giving and a reminder of their selfless love for each other.

Anewly designed kitchen will always reign supreme, but lately, there has been a surge in requests for more functional space beyond the main kitchen enter butler’s pantries and scullery kitchens. Once a staple in grand, old-fashioned homes, these rooms are making a comeback, and it’s not just for nostalgia’s sake. Homeowners are rediscovering their practicality and charm, and these spaces are getting a modern twist that makes them perfect for today’s busy lifestyles. So, what’s behind this growing trend? It’s a combination of utility, organization, and a dash of old-school elegance that’s hard to resist.
To understand why these spaces are becoming popular again, it helps to know where they came from. In the 18th and 19th centuries, large homes and estates needed dedicated spaces for household staff to manage the business of running a house. That’s where butler’s pantries and scullery kitchens came in.
Butler’s pantries were the spot where the butler, hence the name, and other staff prepared for serving meals. They were typically located between the kitchen and the dining
room and were used to store fancy dinnerware, glassware, and silver. These pantries were also equipped with sinks to wash delicate items that needed extra care. Essentially, it was a staging area for everything that happened before the food made it to the dining table.
Scullery kitchens, on the other hand, were all about the behind-the-scenes/ prep work. This is where the messier tasks like washing pots and pans, scrubbing veggies, and cleaning up took place. Sculleries were designed to handle the grunt work of a big kitchen, keeping the mess out of sight from the rest of the house.
As time went on and domestic help became less common, these spaces started to disappear. But with more people focusing on creating organized, functional homes, they’re making a surprising return in new, modern ways.
So, what’s sparking the renewed interest in butler’s pantries and scullery kitchens? People today are busier than ever and want their homes to be both beautiful and functional. These rooms tick all the right boxes for anyone looking for extra space to store, prep, or hide the chaos of a busy kitchen.
TO BE BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL. THESE ROOMS TICK ALL THE RIGHT BOXES FOR ANYONE LOOKING FOR EXTRA SPACE TO STORE, PREP, OR HIDE THE CHAOS OF A BUSY KITCHEN.
Extra Storage and Organization: With kitchens often overflowing with gadgets, cookware, and ingredients, having a dedicated area for all those extra items is a game changer. These rooms store specialty kitchen tools, big serving dishes, and even small appliances in a butler’s pantry, keeping your main kitchen looking neat and tidy.
Perfect for Entertaining: A butler’s pantry provides space to prep food and drinks out of sight, so the main kitchen stays clean when guests arrive. The host or servers can plate dishes, organize serving trays, or set up a mini bar in the pantry, making it much easier to entertain without worrying about clutter piling up in the open.
Hiding the Mess: Kitchens can get messy, especially when cooking for the holidays. By creating a separate space for all the messier tasks like washing dishes, chopping vegetables, or handling raw ingredients, the main kitchen remains clean and presentable. Plus, it helps contain cooking odors and heat.
Showcasing Craftsmanship: Today’s butler’s pantries and sculleries aren’t just functional — they’re also a design statement. People are incorporating custom cabinetry, beautiful countertops, and even decorative shelving to show off their style. These spaces give you the chance to play with high-end finishes and unique design elements that might not fit in a regular kitchen.
Multifunctional Use: Modern versions of butler’s pantries and sculleries are often multifunctional spaces. Some people are adding wine fridges, coffee stations, and even extra dishwashers. In other homes, sculleries double as laundry rooms or extra prep spaces for big gatherings.
As more people look for ways to create organized, multifunctional homes, butler’s pantries and sculleries are likely to stick around for a while. They offer a smart way to manage the busier, messier parts of cooking and entertaining while keeping the main kitchen as a beautiful, welcoming space. Whether it’s the appeal of having an extra prep area or the charm of a custom-designed pantry, these spaces blend old-world charm with modern-day practicality.

AFTER DECADES OF DESIGN FOR HER CLIENTS, TERESA BECK CREATES A SANCTUARY ALL HER OWN
By Hollie Deese
Somepeople are lucky enough to always know what they are supposed to do. But not everyone has the drive, stamina, and strength to make those dreams a reality. Registered Interior Designer Teresa Beck is one of those rare people who is doing exactly what she dreamed of, despite any obstacle that has come her way.
The result is a life she designed and built herself, and it is as stunning as any design project she has completed. “As a little girl, I remember flipping through a magazine and seeing this gold swan faucet and thinking, ‘Oh my god, that’s so gorgeous,’” she says, laughing. “But I also remember deciding that I was going to do interior design one day.”
And she planned on doing exactly that, until life’s first detour. Beck, a native of Columbia, Tennessee, got married right out of high school and quickly had two children. Her career wasn’t going down the path she had envisioned, and soon she realized her marriage wasn’t either.
“When my oldest son was a toddler, I enrolled in interior design classes with International Correspondence School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. This was before we even had the internet! I set to prepare myself for the possibility that I may one day need to support my children and myself on my own,” she says. “I could not, at the time, afford college and childcare.”
The correspondence studios took about two years to complete and receive certification, and in addition, Beck ordered books and learned everything she could about architecture, drafting, foundation plans, design, and construction plans. Over the years she has accumulated more than 450 hours of continuing education and professional development credits. To this day, she still handdraws all clients’ construction plans for new homes, add-ons, and remodels, including furniture and lighting plans and elevations.
After her divorce, she had a few friends willing to trust her with smaller design jobs while she did other work to support her children. But she knew that to thrive she needed to move.
“I realized that, back then, Columbia did not have a large enough population to keep an interior design business viable, and that was also long enough ago that most people had not yet realized the value of hiring an interior designer,” she says.
Beck began researching cities that had better possibilities for interior designers, and she settled on Phoenix. She borrowed $300 from her brother for an airline ticket and flew out to look for a job, insisting she had a good feeling about it when he questioned her plan.
“When I changed planes in Dallas, I introduced myself to the woman sitting beside me and told her what I was doing,” Beck says. “She was an interior designer in Phoenix, and by the time I got off the plane, I had a legal pad page full of design firms with specific names to contact.”
She landed interviews with three firms, but on the way to one of them, she was involved in a car wreck. Using a pay phone, she called the commercial design firm to alert them she would be a few minutes late, and why. At the end of the interview, they offered her a job, saying anybody who came that far, was in a wreck and still showed up could probably handle just about anything.
AS A LITTLE GIRL, I REMEMBER FLIPPING THROUGH A MAGAZINE AND SEEING THIS GOLD SWAN FAUCET AND THINKING, ‘OH MY GOD, THAT’S SO GORGEOUS.’ BUT I ALSO REMEMBER DECIDING THAT I WAS GOING TO DO INTERIOR DESIGN ONE DAY.
TERESA BECK
Two weeks later she had a yard sale and moved with her boys, dog, bird, and most of their belongings to Arizona. For the next two years, her experience at David and Associates Ltd. gave her the foundation to understand the business side of design in a totally different environment than Columbia. It also exposed Beck to different materials and sources and expanded her design sensibilities.
“It made me understand the value of stepping out onto the ‘skinny branches,’” she says.
Beck returned to Tennessee in 1984, became the state’s 28th registered designer and opened Interiors Inc. She operated that first design business until 2000, when she had her first grandchild and thought she was ready to retire. After a 5-year hiatus, though, she opened Tbektu Design + Development, which is thriving today.
WE THINK THAT WE NEED TO DO MORE FOR THE REST OF THE FAMILY, WHEN WE OUGHT TO HAVE THE BEST THAT WE POSSIBLY AFFORD, AND PROVIDE THE BEST EXPERIENCE THAT WE POSSIBLY CAN, FOR OURSELVES ESPECIALLY IN A PRIVATE SPACE LIKE THE BATHROOM.
During COVID in 2020, Beck was spending a lot more time at home. Looking around, she decided it was time to do something special for herself, and she created a bathroom retreat that was a pure reflection of all her years of learning and hard work.
“I got to work on a project of my very own, under the same trying times that everyone else and all my clients were going through, at a time when we really, really wanted and needed that special space where all of those trying times could fade away,” Beck says. “I really wanted my bathroom to have a spa feeling; I wanted to feel like when I went in there, all of the pandemic junk was gone.”
Now, every time Beck sits on her Mongolian wool chair or dries off with the body dryer after enjoying the adjacent outdoor shower, she gets a retreat from reality in a space where she can escape, unwind, and just be.
“We oftentimes need to remind ourselves that we deserve a space like that,” Beck says. “We think that we need to do more for the rest of the family, when we ought to have the best that we can possibly afford, to provide the best experience that we possibly can, for ourselves especially in a private space like the bathroom.”
Beck has worked with numerous vendors and tradespeople, including Gina Hewlett with Louisville Tile, over the past 40 years as she designed spaces for other people. Hewlett has been with Louisville Tile for 12 years and had worked with Beck on a number of projects before she helped her with her personal bathroom.
“They have a wealth of information,” Beck says. “They know their products inside and out, and they are so supportive and willing to help. They even help in the design process because if I haven’t zeroed in on a certain product that I think would be great, but I have in my mind what that looks like, they steer me in the right direction.”
Privately owned Louisville Tile has been around for 60 years serving commercial and residential clients, and it has relationships with vendors and suppliers that make work a lot easier for designers like Beck.
“Designers come to us because we’re knowledgeable,” Hewlett says. “We have integrity. We’re here to help them make their vision come true, and we have the support from the vendors that we use. If you do business with us and something goes sideways, Louisville Tile is going to bend over backward and be there for you whatever it takes to solve the issue. Any good designer ends up being a project manager, so they want partners that are going to be there for them and find solutions.”
I LIKE TO DO A SURPRISE PUNCH OF SOMETHING SOMEWHERE, WHETHER IT BE IN A TEXTURE OR COLOR OR WHATEVER. BUT THAT’S WHY THE REST OF THE TILE THAT’S ON THE FLOOR AND THE OTHER WALLS IN THE BATHROOM IS MUCH MORE TONED DOWN. I JUST DIDN’T WANT ANYTHING TO COMPETE WITH THAT GORGEOUS PORCELAIN SLAB.
Hewlett loves it when a designer brings tile into the conversation early on because it has so many more options in size, color, design, and texture than do the counters or the flooring.
“The old thought process was to pick out your countertops and then come see me for your backsplash, but I have found people regret that because there are only a handful of options for countertop material compared to tile,” she says. “Then you can just make your countertop work with that, and let the tile be the star of the room.”
And that is exactly what they did in Beck’s bathroom. Hewlett knew Beck wanted to make porcelain wall slabs the centerpiece of the room’s design, and she directed her to the Atlas Concorde USA design center in Franklin. There Teresa chose the slab that was the starting point and driving force for the whole design.
“Everything is based off the slab,” Beck says. “I didn’t want anything to compete with it, with the exception of my blue tub. I like to do a surprise punch of something somewhere, whether it be in a texture or color or whatever. But that’s why the rest of the tile that’s on the floor and the other walls in the bathroom is much more toned down. I just didn’t want anything to compete with that gorgeous porcelain slab.”
Mary Soeder with PDI Kitchen, Bath and Lighting worked with Beck on fixtures for this project. And while the walls are an obvious star in the design, it’s hard to ignore the importance of the blue MTI bathtub that sits center stage.
“I was excited when she told me she wanted to do a color,” Soeder says of the bold choice. “I love working on designers’ personal spaces whether it’s a whole house, a bathroom, a kitchen, even just a wet bar because I feel like they get to exercise all those things that they want a client to do. A client can be hesitant, but in a designer’s personal house, they’re like, ‘Let’s go for it.’”
That is exactly the attitude Beck had throughout this project, Soeder says, from the wall slabs to the blue bathtub, which she thinks has a benefit beyond pushing the boundaries of design.
“I also think it gives them a little more confidence for the next client who wants to do it,” Soeder says. “It adds to your portfolio of eyecatching things that you do. And once it all comes together, layer by layer, you see that it is perfect.” n

Weall want to look our best for the holidays. We aim for glowing skin, nourished hair, a healthy physique, and, of course, a radiant smile. Winter is a season filled with festive activities, holiday gatherings, and cozy get-togethers with friends and family. Winter is all about connecting with others, and naturally, we want to present our best selves. To feel your best, you'll want to show off that pearly white smile, so let's explore some ways to maintain a healthy smile.
Choose Healthy Snacks and Drinks: Remember to steer clear of foods and drinks that are unhealthy for your teeth. The number one avoidance should be sugar, as it is typically the most detrimental to your oral health. Healthy snacks, such as dried fruit and similar substances, can be harmful to your teeth as the chewy sticky substance gets stuck in your teeth and can cause decay. Even though the sugar is natural in fruit, it still can be harmful to your teeth if it just sits on them. If you do eat sweets in the form of dried fruit, make sure to brush your teeth soon after to avoid this sticky situation. Consider drinking water as opposed to any sugar-filled drinks. Additionally, be careful with foods and drinks that have high acidic content, these can also damage the enamel of your teeth.
glands and only produce a small amount of melanin. Cold weather, low humidity, and winds can cause lips to become dry and chapped. Make sure to use a lip moisturizer with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 even during the winter months.
Professional Teeth Whitening: If you are looking to whiten up that beautiful smile to boost your confidence this holiday season, then professional teeth whitening might be for you. Available options include in-office teeth whitening treatments using blue light technology or custom-made trays home trays with safe-touse, prescription-strength teeth whitening gel. TIP: a professional teeth whitening treatment makes a GREAT gift!
Try Chewing Gum: Sugar-free chewing gum can be good for your teeth. It helps with the production of saliva which helps keep the mouth moisturized. Xylitol, the sweetener in the gum, isn’t converted into acid by the bacteria in your mouth when consumed. So it is less harmful to your teeth and helps to maintain a proper alkaline-toacid balance in the mouth.
Wear Sports Mouth Guards: A large majority of mouth injuries occur during sports activity. When your child is playing sports, particularly contact sports, make sure they have a mouth guard, ensuring the protection of their teeth. It may come as a surprise that even damage done to your child’s baby teeth can cause potential future damage, so make sure to keep your kid’s teeth protected.
Don’t Forget Lip Protection Outdoors: Most people are unaware that lips have one of the thinnest layers of skin on the human body, and they are the most sensitive and delicate. Lips are extremely fragile because they do not have any sweat glands or sebaceous
