Experience the Annual Lighting of the Village in Edelweiss River Park, 5-7 p.m., Friday, November 29. Decorated with 8,000 lights and 800+ ornaments, the 20-foot-tall tree and the entire town are dressed up and illuminated every night until February.
The 17th Annual Christkindlmarkt at the Marktplatz is held on November 30 and December 1, 7, and 8. This traditional German event offers everything from unique gifts and decorations to an assortment of savory and sweet foods, drinks, and candied treats. Join in a Victorian Christmas in the historic settlements at the Hardman Farm State Historic Site Sautee Nacoochee on Fridays and Saturdays from December 6-21. See the manor dressed in period holiday décor while learning about traditions from docents in their finest 1870s garb.
Head for the less traveled roads and quiet mountain cabin hideaways at Unicoi State Park and Lodge adjacent to the Chattahoochee National Forest. The Appalachian Trail runs through here, and Yonah Mountain is one of the top three rock climbing spots in Georgia. HelenGA.org

Blue Ridge is a treasured town in the North Georgia Mountains. Climb aboard the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Holiday Express for a festive one or four-hour train ride complete with holiday music, Christmas story readings, and St. Nick himself from November 29 through December 24. Children will receive a Blue Ridge Scenic Railway jingle bell, candy cane, and activity packet while on board. This adventure starts at the historic 1905 depot in Downtown and vintage climate-controlled and open-air rail cars wind alongside the Toccoa River. Delicious hot chocolate and other snacks are available for sale in the concession car.
Blue Ridge’s Blue Friday, November 29, officially starts the season. Downtown is lavishly decked out in holiday finery; merchants offer store discounts; food vendors and strolling entertainment complete the scene. Don’t miss Gingerbread Village, with elaborately decorated houses, at the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association’s Arts Center. On Saturday, November 30, Light Up Blue Ridge is a full day of seasonal cheer, strolling entertainment, food vendors, and more. Children can visit Santa Claus from noon to 5 p.m. in the park gazebo. Building Bridges through Art
Inthe heart of historic downtown Columbia, Tennessee, a once unassuming 19thcentury building now houses a vibrant oasis of creativity and expression Gallery 48. Founded by Joanna Kica, the gallery has quickly become a hot spot for art enthusiasts and a testament to Kica’s lifelong passion for the arts. Her journey from Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, to the welcoming streets of Columbia is as rich and varied as the pieces lining the walls of her gallery.
Growing up in Krakow, Kica’s childhood was steeped in art. School trips to museums, art galleries, theaters, and operas were not just occasional treats but regular occurrences that laid the foundation for a profound appreciation of the arts. The city itself, with its intact medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, offered a living museum experience. Walking through Krakow’s old town visiting its churches and historic buildings, one cannot help but breathe in the essence of history. This environment nurtured Kica’s innate love for artistic expression.

Kica’s career aspirations prompted her to earn her law degree at Krakow’s prestigious Jagiellonian University, the oldest law faculty in Poland whose history dates back to 1364. A short while after, a serendipitous reunion would alter the course of her life. During one of his visits back to Krakow, Kica reconnected with Peter, a childhood friend who had since moved to the United States. Their renewed connection quickly blossomed into love, prompting her to move to the United States later marrying Peter.
This leap of faith marked the beginning of a new chapter in Kica’s life. From visiting galleries and exhibitions to collecting unique pieces during their travels, art brought them closer together. Throughout their marriage, it has remained a shared passion that she and her husband cherish deeply. They often spent weekends exploring galleries and exhibitions immersing themselves in the creative worlds of various art mediums. Their home is adorned with an eclectic collection of pieces gathered over the years, each a testament to their adventures with a memory made and a story behind it.
This mutual appreciation inspired Kica to one day create a space where others could experience the same joy and connection. Unbeknownst to her at the time, the groundwork for owning her art gallery had been long laid, decades in the making. Their love story, seamlessly intertwined with their passion for art, is an integral part of the spirit of Gallery 48.
When Kica moved to the United States in 2005, she earned her master’s degree in public and health administration and worked as a researcher for Michigan State University for over 13 years. In the summer of 2022, a new work opportunity for her husband prompted their family to relocate to Tennessee. With this pending move, she sensed a shift in her professional life. At a crossroads in her career, Kica saw this as the ideal timing and perfect opportunity to pivot and finally pursue her dream of opening an art gallery.
Upon her first visit to Columbia a few years ago, Kica fell in love with the town and was thrilled to secure the perfect space for her gallery in a historic building in the heart of Columbia. Gallery 48 opened its doors in the fall of 2023, initially representing seven international artists, two Tennessee artists, and one artist from Michigan. Gallery 48 also features a variety of beautiful and unique artisan handmade products, including jewelry, leather handbags and accessories, ceramics, pottery, glass art, and wood art. These products are made locally as well as in other countries.
The collection at the gallery has grown since first opening, now showcasing seven local Columbia artists, eight Tennessee artists from surrounding areas, two Michigan artists, artists from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and seven international artists. Kica’s ongoing commitment to discovering and promoting new talent allows her to consistently expand the gallery’s roster of artisans, regularly introducing fresh talent to Columbia.
One of the unique aspects of Gallery 48 is the personal touch Kica brings to her curation process. She traveled across Europe to meet each artist she represented, carefully selecting them for their distinctive styles and expressions. This dedication to personal connection ensures the gallery’s collection is not only diverse but also deeply meaningful.
Kica’s passion for art extends beyond her professional endeavors. Throughout her travels, she has always made it a point to visit art galleries, often bringing back pieces that connected with her. These personal experiences with art enriched her life and informed her vision for Gallery 48. Kica’s goal is to create a space where art lovers can find inspiration and connection, much like she has throughout her life.

Tohelp get in the holiday spirit this season, Amy Montgomery, owner of Amy Montgomery Home in Columbia, Tennessee, is hosting a Christmas Tea in her home, decorated with Christmas joy. This event will be a time to celebrate the season and enjoy a personal home tour to benefit a local charity.
Throughout 2024 Montgomery has invited patrons and the community into her shop and home for Dinners & Flowers and At Home with Amy, not to mention numerous other events like book signings and trunk shows. These events offer guests time to enjoy conversation with friends, delicious food, shopping after hours at AMH, and an opportunity to learn insight from Montgomery.
Montgomery’s events have received rave reviews from far and near. As a way to pay it forward, Montgomery wants to share Christmas Tea with the community this holiday season with proceeds from the event benefiting Columbia’s Room in the Inn. “I am so grateful for the success and support of our Dinners & Flowers with Amy by our Columbia community, Franklin and Brentwood neighbors, and towns from surrounding states that I am taking this opportunity to serve others. It makes me so happy to host this Christmas Tea and the proceeds from the tea will be able to provide Columbia’s Room in the Inn with approximately $3,000 towards improving their facilities,” Montgomery said.

Baking spray with flour
3 1/4 cups White Lily® Enriched Bleached All-Purpose Flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
1 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened
3 cups sugar
6 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat oven to 325°F. Coat a 10-inch tube pan with flour and no-stick cooking spray.
Combine flour and salt in a small bowl; set aside. Beat butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer for about 60 seconds or until smooth. Add sugar gradually; beat on medium-high speed for 5 minutes or until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla and almond extract. Fold in flour just until combined (do not overmix). Spoon batter into prepared pan.
Bake 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on cooling rack for 15 minutes. Remove from pan. Cool completely on cooling rack.
Tip: Serve plain or add fresh berries and whipped cream.

Thebase of a good meal can come from the simplest of ingredients. Using good quality, simple flavors will elevate your meal. For most of us, we reach for spices and herbs to flavor our dishes. The quality of those spices can vary greatly and alter the flavor profile of your dish. If you can grow and dry your own, that is fantastic. However, in today’s busy world, it is more realistic to reach for dried spices from our cabinets.
While a great way to impart flavor, you may not know what is in that little jar. Dried spices can be high in heavy metals and pesticides. The lack of regulation on dried spices, which primarily come from other countries, makes it a lot of work for you to research and source good simple spices. We are here to simplify that for you!
Spices are the place to start simplifying your pantry. Buying organic, single-sourced spices puts you on your way to doing just that. You can control the spices even further by blending your own seasonings. When you want Italian seasoning, taco seasoning, etc., don’t buy a pre-blended jar with anti-caking agents. You may have always thought of spices as just a flavor profile for your recipes, but let’s not bypass their amazing nutritional qualities. By taking control of your spice cabinet and choosing high-quality, organic spices, you are also giving your meals a powerful dose of nutrition. Let’s discuss a few of our favorite holiday spices mentioned in the previous mixes.
Cardamom: You may have used this on occasion in baked goods or had it in Indian dishes, but my top choice is good ole chai tea along with the complementary spices of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, black pepper, and star anise. Cardamom’s list of health benefits is quite lengthy, but it is mostly shown to improve blood pressure, dental health, digestion, and of course inflammation as it is in the turmeric and ginger family.
Nutmeg: Popular in some fall-inspired desserts and even curry dishes, this powerhouse is one of my favorites that should really get more attention. Nutmeg contains antioxidant compounds that fight cellular damage. The word anti-inflammatory has also had a lot of attention over the last few years and spices like nutmeg, turmeric, and ginger all play a dynamic role in bringing down inflammation found in our bodies from toxins in our environment, food, etc.
Sage: This one we all see at our Thanksgiving meals. I know my grandmother loaded sage into our dressing, or stuffing as some say, and there is no way in my mind to have Thanksgiving without the entire container of sage being used. Sage is a powerful healer for the brain, improving its function and memory. No wonder sage is tied to the meaning of wisdom.
A comforting dish you should try to experience some flavorful spices is split pea curry stew with rice. It is loaded with nutritional value and has a rich warm depth of flavor from all the spices used, like curry, turmeric, ginger, and garlic. This creamy textured meal is perfect for the cool weather during the holidays and is sure to satisfy.

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups dry split peas
28 oz. can whole tomatoes, crushed by hand
15 oz. can of coconut milk
1/2 cup sweet onion, diced
1 cup carrot, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon green curry paste
1 tablespoon turmeric
2 teaspoons curry seasoning (recipe on page 38)
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2-1 teaspoon salt
1 cup heavy cream
3 cups basmati rice
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
1-1 1/2 cups ham, diced
Fresh cilantro or sour cream for garnish
Serve with crusty bread
INSTRUCTIONS
1 Place all ingredients (optional ham) except cream, rice, sour cream, and cilantro in slow cooker.
2 Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours or until the split peas are soft.
3 Stir in cream and keep on warm until ready to serve.
4 Cook rice according to directions on package.
5 Serve rice topped with split pea curry soup and garnish.
Tip: If you prefer a creamy smooth texture, puree half the mixture when split peas are soft. If soup needs to be thinned out, add a splash of water, vegetable broth, or coconut milk.
