History Nascono sotto il segno del tempo le forme raffinate ed eterne degli oggetti in faggio curvato firmati Italcomma. Narrano di un uomo, Michael Thonet e della sua geniale intuizione di piegare il faggio col vapore e disegnare con il legno motivi decorativi di impareggiabile bellezza, capaci di rendere seducenti ed unici gli oggetti di uso quotidiano. Di un Impero, quello Austro-Ungarico, che alla fine dell’ 800 accolse con favore l’idea di diffondere uno stile elegante ed innovativo, creando una vasta rete di fabbriche atte appunto alla lavorazione a vapore del faggio. Questa tradizione prosegue ancora oggi; Italcomma, da più di 30 anni la fa sua e la porta avanti con questa preziosa collezione di Sedie Storiche, ma sempre di grande attualità! Born under the sign of time, the refined and eternal forms of the bentwood items in beech created by Italcomma. They tell the story of a man, Michael Thonet, who had the ingenious foresight to curve beech using steam and to sculpt in wood decorative motifs of incomparable beauty, capable of making objects of daily use seductive and unique. Of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which, at the end of the nineteenth century, looked favourably upon the idea of promoting an elegant and innovative style, creating a vast network of factories engaged in using steam to curve beech. Italcomma, since more than 30 years keeps up that tradition with this precious collection named Sedie Storiche: historical chairs but always up-to-date!

Originals L’originalità del prodotto contraddistingue la collezione Sedie Storiche di Italcomma. Alcune delle fabbriche originali dell’impero Austro-Ungarico, ancora oggi in attività, continuano a produrre secondo i dettami di Michael Thonet; la tecnica è rimasta immutata, la curvatura del faggio viene eseguita manualmente ed anche le impagliature sono realizzate con materiali naturali, tirando i nodi, sempre a mano, uno per uno. Da queste fabbriche Italcomma propone sedie e complementi d’arredo costruiti su disegni e stampi originali ed, attraverso una ricerca costante, continua a riscoprire, tra gli antichi disegni, gioielli, a volte inediti, che si possono trovare nei musei di tutta Europa così come perfettamente integrati nell’arredamento di ogni casa.

Originality of the product characterised the Italcomma Sedie Storiche collection. Some of the factories of the Austro-Hungarian empire are still working today and they still keep up the production according to the original methods devised by Michael Thonet; the technique is the same, nothing has changed: every single piece is handmade; even every woven item is still hand crafted and knots tied one by one. From those factories Italcomma selects its chairs and complements, manufactured according to the original designs and moulds, and thanks to its assiduous attention to research, it keeps up discovering, among the ancient designs, real ‘jewels’, which are found in some of the most prestigious museums throughout Europe as well as in the best-furnished homes.

Glamour Con la sua geniale idea, concepita a metà del 1800, di curvare il faggio con il vapore, Michael Thonet crea uno stile al di sopra delle mode; i prodotti, ancora oggi costruiti su disegni originali, con materiali e tecniche rimasti immutati per oltre 150 anni, non hanno perso il loro fascino. La rivisitazione di alcuni dei “modelli Thonet” con l’uso di laccature, tessuti, pelle e cuoio nei colori di tendenza, pur mantenendo l’origine storica del prodotto, lo rende ancora più accattivante e pronto a risolvere le più svariate soluzione di arredamento.

With his brilliant idea, conceived in the middle of the nineteenth century, to bent beech with steam, Michael Thonet create a style beyond fashion. Still manufactured according to the original designs, with materials and techniques that are the same for more than 150 years, products haven’t lost their glamour. The re-interpretation of some of “Thonet” models with lacquering, fabrics, leather and thick hide in trend colours, even maintaining the historical origin of the products makes them even more charming and ready to solve all sorts of furnishing requirement.

Le sedute, disponibili in 16 colori, sono realizzate artigianalmente in “vero cuoio” di pregevole qualià; (pelli bovine conciate di provenienza italiana ed europea), con finiture e colorazioni ottenute con resine acriliche e pigmenti fissativi all’acqua. Il bordo, eseguito a taglio vivo è tinto e lucidato interamente e rigorosamente a mano. Le cuciture sono realizzate con filato e tecniche di lavorazione tramandate dai vecchi sellai. The seats, available in 16 different colours, are handcraft in high quality “original thick hide” (Italian and European cattle dug hide) finishes and colours made of acrylic resin and water fixative pigments. The sharp cut edge is painted and polished with yarn and through the original techniques of ancient saddlers.

Tutti i materiali utilizzati e le relative lavorazioni vengono accuratamente seguite. Si comincia da una rigorosa selezione del faggio e una attenta successiva stagionatura. La ricerca della migliore qualità continua in tutti i passaggi di produzione: curvatura del faggio con il vapore, impagliature in Paglia di Vienna, laccature, tappezzerie, applicazione del cuoio. Prima della spedizione poi, ogni articolo viene selezionato e controllato da personale qualificato e dotato di una scheda prodotto contenente istruzioni per uso, manutenzione e pulizia. Le piccole differenze riscontrabili tra un pezzo e l’altro ne confermano l’esecuzione artigianale, garantendone pregio ed originalità.

A special care follows Italcomma products from their birth to the arrival in showrooms, houses, hotels and restaurants all over the world. All used materials and their manufacturing are carefully controlled. Starting from a rigorous selection of beech and its subsequent seasoning. The search for the best quality continue in all production steps: bending beech with steam, cane weaving, lacquering, upholstery, thick hide application. Before delivery every item is selected and checked from a skilled staff and provided with a specifications card containing directions for use, maintenance and cleaning. Small differences from one piece and an other confirm the handicraft of the product, confirming its value and originality.

Materials Tutti i modelli contenuti in questo catalogo sono realizzati in faggio curvato, con stampi originali e secondo i tradizionali sistemi di lavorazione che utilizzano la tecnica del vapore per la piegatura. Le parti in paglia di Vienna sono realizzate artigianalmente con un materiale naturale e i nodi sono tirati a mano uno per uno. Solo alcuni modelli sono impagliati sempre artigianalmente ma con paglia di Vienna pre-intrecciata. Le tappezzerie e l’applicazione delle parti in cuoio (pelle italiana di altissima qualità) vengono realizzate secondo i dettami della più antica e nobile tradizione italiana.

All the models in this catalogue are produced in bent beech wood, with the use of original designs and moulds, using traditional technique that use steam for bending. Woven cane parts are handcrafted with a natural material and knots tied one by one. Only few items have pre-woven cane parts. Upholstery and thick hide (high quality Italian leather) application are executed according to the antique and noble Italian traditions.

E’ innegabile riconoscere che lo “stile Thonet” oltre a creare una tendenza mai abbandonata, è stato poi, nel tempo, sposato e rivisitato dai più famosi designers moderni e contemporanei.

The remarkable and unquestionable aesthetic value, joint to the brilliant idea to bent beech with steam made the objects designed by Michael Thonet, immediately included in design. Production, characterised by construction needs, becomes significant, making each item elegant and refined. The overall transparency makes the products highly recognizable, still present and responding to contemporary taste. It is undeniable to recognize that the “Thonet style“ created a trend ever abandoned, that was, in time, agreed and revisited by the most famous modern and contemporary designers.
