PRESENTED BY WORLD RELIEF | KILNS COLLEGE
FEB. 11+12 2011/BEND, OREGON
A Word OF WELCOME I n 1 9 6 3 M a r t i n L u t h e r K i n g J r . penned a letter to his critics from his jail cell in Birmingham, AL. His contemporaries, unconvinced of King’s methods, had questioned his purposes and prompted him to return to Atlanta. Explaining his business in Alabama, Dr. King wrote, “I am in Birmingham because injustice is here… and injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” It will be asked of you, why are you in Bend this weekend? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish at The Justice Conference? True, our answers may vary, but to some degree we are all here because like Dr. King, we see injustice. We see and we sense that our whole world is suffering the pain of deep wrongs. We are also here because we believe injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We know the world is connected. Acts of injustice are not limited to communities or continents and the effect of our time spent here this weekend will not be limited to Oregon. This conference can catalyze a worldwide reaction of love, mercy, selflessness and justice. How, exactly, is that possible? It starts with us. We have come together to learn how to rightly think about the wrongs in the world. We have the opportunity to invite others to join us and realize the power of collaboration. We have the chance to inspire others and be inspired. With education, collaboration, and inspiration to overcome the daunting obstacles blocking the path of justice, what can we accomplish? Can we hope for audacious things like ending poverty and alleviating human suffering? Dr. King knew he would not live to see the realization of his dream, yet he went on dreaming and working and loving because it was right. May we be so passionate and bold as to continue the work of our ancestors and commit to a world of freedom and equality, even if it takes generations to come. Thank you for being here to learn, collaborate and dream with us. Welcome to The Justice Conference.
