People making a difference

Within Mawson Lakes are many clever and creative people. I meet them wherever I go, and in this issue I open a window on some local identities and share with you their stories and the contributions they are making to Mawson Lakes and to society at large.

Recognising an outstanding contribution to the community, the City of Salisbury has named Kelvin Trimper, one of the founding fathers of Mawson Lakes, the 2012 Citizen of the Year (see story page 23). Congratulations Kelvin.

Protecting people from terror and trauma is fire fighter Brendon Barr who is a resident (p8).

Sharing his creative talents with us in this issue is Michael Flynn whose photograph is on the cover, with more of his pictures inside (page 13).

With every issue, Mawson Lakes Living grows. This month the Mayor of the City of Salisbury joins the magazine to talk about the services that Salisbury Council provides and how we can get in touch with Council.

I appreciate your wonderful feedback and constantly hear that whenever you want a service you turn first to Living in order to support local business and local people.

Mobara Park

The exquisite bronze statue on the cover of this issue is called ‘Nakayoshi’. It is located in the shady parklands of Mobara Park (pronounced mow/bar/a), just across the road from the Woolworth’s building in Garden Terrace.

The statue was presented to the City of Salisbury in 2004 in recognition of the sister relationship between the city of Mobara in Japan and the City of Salisbury in South Australia.

Nakayoshi means close friends and Mobara Park is landscaped with both Japanese and Australian themes.

The park contains 3 symbolic gardens:

Garden of Blossoms is the entrance garden from Mawson Lakes Drive featuring the sculpture ‘Balancing Act’. Rows of ornamental pears create a semitransparent veil that opens up as one walks further into the park. The changing colours of leaves and blossoms accentuate the seasons. Large gently mounded circles of grass randomly punctuate the lines of trees, their whimsical forms inviting play. The circular paving using fractured and cut stone and circular seats are design features used in Japanese temple landscapes.

Garden of Fields is a diagonal field of iris and cosmos, mown grass and gravel which refers to the human patterning of the landscape. A timber deck traverses the field emphasising the city of Mobara’s agricultural heritage. Marking the entrance to this garden is a cluster of bright red poles, a colour often associated with Japan. Here you will find the bronze sculpture ‘Nakayoshi’.

Garden of Shifting Skies accentuates the broad horizontal skies and flat topography of Salisbury. This space is composed of indigenous and mown grasses, their changing colour and growth marking the different seasons. Eucalypts provides shade and act as a counterpoint to this otherwise symmetrical space. Reclining lounge seats and low concrete walls invite visitors to pause and contemplate the heavens as well as viewing the channel of water as it falls into a circular sunken pool. Stepping stones, a treatment often used in Japan, allows the water to be crossed.

Mobara Park was opened in 2004 and today it is a beautiful mix of seasonal colours, open spaces for social gettogethers, play grounds, tennis and volleyball courts and picnic areas, as well as providing quiet, tranquil spots for personal reflection and relaxation amidst shady trees and public art. Brenton says that he is attracted to a career as a fire fighter because it is a communityfocussed occupation. “We see people in their worst predicament but we know that we can help them through it. The relief on peoples’ faces when they hear that siren approaching says it all.”

Brenton is involved in the Juvenile Fire Lighters Intervention Program that educates young people who have been before the courts for arson. “Through talks and videos, we show offenders the dangers and devastating consequences of fire. This is part of community safety that interests me,” he said. Ed.

Fire tips for the home

► Know your neighbours. Fire can spread quickly in high density suburbs so be aware of what’s happening around you.

► Have a Home Fire Escape Plan and know how to get out. ..

► Do not deadlock your doors when you are home unless you are prepared to leave the key in the lock.

► Change the battery on your smoke alarm once a year.

Mother and daughter bring serene atmosphere to ML

When you push open the door of Oasis Body and Beauty, a sense of serenity instantly descends upon you.

A love of Asian culture has inspired mother Debbie Abram and daughter Ariel in the décor of their elegant new beauty shop in Main Street.

Oasis Body and Beauty will officially open this month (see advert opposite) and everyone is welcome to step inside and experience their gentle art of body care.

When Ariel was at school she was quite determined about her career direction. The 19-year old said she always wanted to study beauty therapy. “I took on the added challenge of attaining my beauty certificates while studying Year 12. It was hard work but I really love what I do, particularly applying make-up for special occasions, such as weddings, formals and parties.”

As Debbie watched her daughter studying beauty, many things came back to her from the time 20 years ago when she ran her own beauty business.

“I enrolled in the beauty course with Ariel to refresh my skills and I loved working alongside my daughter so much that we decided to go into business together.”

The mother and daughter team have travelled to Thailand several times to examine the application of Thai beauty therapy, massage, reflexology and hospitality and to buy fittings for the shop.

“We want to bring a little bit of Thai culture to Mawson Lakes,” said Ariel.

The two story salon offers an infrared sauna, single and double body treatment rooms, body scrubs and relaxation massage, upstairs, while downstairs the focus is on manicures, pedicures, tanning and paraffin treatments to infuse moisture back into the skin.

Don’t miss the Grand Opening on Sunday 25 March when you can see demonstrations, have a mini treatment and collect sample products while sipping a glass of wine with hor d’oeuvres.

Oasis uses only quality products in its makeup and skin care treatments. Ariel’s friendly customer relations approach is part of the Oasis experience. Debbie Abram and Ariel.

Redevelopment of the shopping centre

Construction on a new shopping centre for Mawson Lakes is planned to start this year in the vacant block of land opposite the present shopping centre (pictured).

Andrew Taplin, director of The Taplin Group, who owns the site, said that the key elements will be a new 4,000 metre Woolworths supermarket (approximately double the size of the existing store), an enclosed shopping mall and more retail stores.

The complex upon completion will have 628 car parks.

Taplin said it is waiting for tenders and approvals, and the project is set to go when all the legalities are finalised. The project will take an estimated 18 months to complete. Keep reading Living for more news of this exciting and long-awaited development. Ed

What TREE is that?

The cottonwood tree is well suited to the conditions of Mawson Lakes and can be seen in gardens everywhere.

Cottonwood: Hibiscus Rubra (6m ) This evergreen small flowering tree or shrub has large deep greeny purple heart-shaped leaves.

Early on a summer’s day the flowers are bright yellow with a red centre. Over the course of the day they deepen to orange and finally red before they fall. The tree is a fast grower and is easily shaped into a bush or tree.

Many examples can be seen around Trinity Green Retirement Village, especially Brunswick Place. Also in street planting at The Cove.

A Message from the Mayor of Salisbury, Gillian Aldridge

Having lived in the Salisbury Council area for more than 45 years, I have seen many changes occur, but the development of Mawson Lakes stands out as a major highlight.

As Mayor of Salisbury, it is important for me to ensure that our 130,000 residents understand what Council does for the community and what we are doing to create a better future for our children and grandchildren.

Some of Council’s lesser known programs include graffiti removal, assistance to our senior residents with in-home care, providing a variety of sporting programs and venues, libraries, and community centres including the Mawson Centre. We work with newly arrived citizens to help them settle here and our environmental work is world renowned.

As well as raising awareness of Council’s services through this publication, I would like to assure Mawson Lakes’ residents that this Council is here to listen to you, and work with you to build a future of opportunity.

If you have any enquiries about Council services, please contact staff at our Customer Centre on 8406 8222 or go to our website www.salisbury.sa.gov.au

Listening to the locals

Premier Jay Weatherill together with Dr Susan Close (ALP) and Paul Caica, Minister for the Environment, talked to local residents at meetings last month to hear public opinion on local and state issues in the lead up to the by-election for the seat of Port Adelaide.

Dr Close, the newly elected MP for Port Adelaide (the electorate for ML) said it is essential for politicians to maintain a connection with their community.

”Governments make better decisions when they know what’s happening in people’s lives and they know what is important to them.”

She divided the concerns of people in Mawson Lakes into two broad categories. One relates to the economic health and security of SA, ensuring that there will be jobs, skills and industry to carry the state forward. The other is about quality of life at a local level reflected in questions to do with the quality of the parks, hoon driving, graffiti, parking problems and the lack of garbage bins, doggie bags and a post office.

“People emphasise that they want to live a peaceful life in a safe and secure community,” said Dr Close. Ed.

Looking after the landscape

Mawson Lakes people take a keen interest in the landscape around them, so Living is pleased to welcome Brian Pledger, Environmental Management Officer at the City of Salisbury, to our community magazine where he will discuss issues affecting the parks and reserves, and other important landscape matters.

The last two reserves being built in Mawson Lakes are in progress. These are Palani Court Reserve in The Cascades, and Biodiversity Reserve in The Bridges. Both will be completed within the next couple of months. You may have noticed a purple weed with grey spiky leaves and nasty thorns growing throughout Mawson Lakes (pictured). This is silverleaf nightshade (solanum elaeagnifolium), a deep-rooted perennial weed introduced from tropical America. It forms large clonal infestations of many stems connected by the root system underground. February is a good time of year to treat it.

Because it is not easily controlled by herbicides or management practices, it is important to keep silverleaf nightshade off clean

properties and to recognise and destroy new infestations before they become established. Use a glyphosate based herbicide such as Roundup, Zero or No-gro after rains or in cooler weather and ensure complete coverage for best results.

If you have a landscape issue you wish to discuss with Council please contact Brian or Tamika on 8406 8578 or email bpledger@salisbury.sa.gov.au or tcook@salisbury.sa.gov.au

Salisbury’s Citizen of the Year

On Australia Day, the City of Salisbury announced that Kelvin Trimper, one of the founding fathers of Mawson Lakes, is its 2012 Citizen of the Year.

The top honour is in recognition of Kelvin’s contribution to economic development across Salisbury and the Northern Region, in particular for taking the development of Mawson Lakes from a vision to a living, working, learning community combined with environmental sustainability.

Kelvin who is now education and community development manager at Lend Lease, said that Mawson Lakes broke new ground when a major developer partnered with the State Government, Salisbury Council and UniSA. ’’We shared a vision for a community in which there were residents, workers and learners,” he said.

Kelvin’s position as chair of both the Northern Economic Leaders Group and the Innovation and Economic Opportunities Group emphasises the

pivotal role he continues to play in bringing key private sector organisations together to enhance employment opportunities and develop community capacity for the benefit of the entire Northern Region.

“The North is where the growth will be in the next decade and I am honoured to help make this region a better place,” he said. Ed.

Catching Carp

If you see fish in Mawson Lakes they are European Carp, an introduced freshwater species. Here they are a particular problem because they have undermined the walls of the main lake and the walls of the eastern lake in Shearwater.

City of Salisbury director of city projects, Colin Pitman, said that two years of investigations into subsiding walls, found that carp had created cavities under the concrete walls by sucking through the mud below them.“The carp were an unexpected source of the sinking walls. We are now repairing the lake walls, stabilising them with extra concrete and positioning crushed stones to prevent the carp from destabilising them again.”

Rapid growth of the fish, their ease of culture and ability to withstand a wide range of water quality makes it hard to eradicate them altogether, but assisting in the control of carp numbers are recreational fishermen Vanessa and Kenton. They say that fishing the carp out of the water is a good way to keep the numbers down. “These fish are bony and not nice to eat,” said Kenton who uses bread for bait,” but they make good fertilizer and tasty bait for ocean fishing, crabs, yabbies, and rock lobsters.”

European carp is considered a major pest throughout Australia and a danger to native fish. They have taken over Mawson Lakes and are the only fish in the waters. They feed by sucking around roots of aquatic plants in search of aquatic insects.

Many plants are uprooted during the feeding process, and mud and plant debris is expelled, resulting in increased water turbidity. This explains why the waters of Mawson Lakes are so muddy.

In South Australia, carp is classified as a noxious species and caught fish are not to be

From sheep paddocks to five villages

Alittle history of Mawson Lakes will help you appreciate how far the suburb has come from sheep paddocks to modern urban living.

The first people to occupy the land were the Kaurna people, who came to the Adelaide plains some 24,000 years ago.

In 1970, the South Australian Institute of Technology established a campus at The Levels. Today, this is the Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia. In 1982, the South Australian Government purchased a large amount of land to create Technology Park.

In 1985, the State Government used the land to form part of the Multi Function Polis but this idea lost momentum and never went ahead.

In 1998 a partnership between Lend Lease and the South Australian Government’s Land Management Corporation created the new suburb of Mawson Lakes on 620 hectares of land at the site of the former Multi Function Polis with an investment of $1.5 billion.

Following European settlement in the 1830s, the area now called Mawson Lakes, was pastoral holdings known as The Levels. This name refers to the flat plain topography.

In the early 1900s the area was bought up by Elder Smith & Co who operated stockyards and paddocks until 1982.

In 2011 Delfin/Lend Lease completed their development project at Mawson Lakes and moved away. The management of Mawson Lakes was transferred to the City of Salisbury. Technology Park was transferred to the government department, Defence SA.

Today, Mawson Lakes is a garden suburb covering 6.2 sq km and consisting of 5 villages – Central, The Bridges, The Cascades, The Sanctuary, and Shoalhaven. (See map opposite). Population is 12,000 and growing. Ed.

Dangerous Dogs in Mawson Lakes by Nigella

A well-mannered dog is a joy to meet. They know how to approach another dog and how to be sociable. Straight away you can spot good training. I meet lots of well-mannered dogs in ML. Unfortunately, there are other dogs who lack social skills. Indeed, some can be dangerous. We encountered a dangerous dog in ML just recently that scared the daylights out of us.

Can you imagine my Mummy’s terror when a staffordshire bull terrier attacked me on the street as we walked along the footpath not far from home.

It was a Sunday afternoon and this dog came out of nowhere and ploughed into me, rolling me over and over.

Mummy was screaming, a sound so shrill it brought the neighbours racing to the scene. When the big ball of muscle wheeled around for a third attack I thought I was a goner. Just as the attacker lunged at me again, the dog owner raced out of the house, grabbed his dog and hauled it away, without so much as a word.

A kindly neighbour gently laid me on the grass and checked me all over for damage. Mummy was no good; she was shaking and looking whiter than me!

Since the attack, several people have told us stories of unprovoked dog attacks in Mawson Lakes, so if you are attacked by a dog this is what to do.

Scream/yell as loudly as you can to get help and alert the offending owner.

Immediately check your dog for puncture wounds and broken bones. An emergency trip to the vet may be necessary. ML Vet 8439 8955

Emergency 8289 3722

Ring Salisbury Council on 8406 8222 or emergency out-of-hours number 8406 8356 (Police do not deal with dog attacks).

The dog inspector at Council will record the attack (statistics on dangerous dogs help form regulations).

If you make a formal complaint, the Council Inspector will investigate and may issue a fine to the owner or person in charge of the dog. Depending on the offence, the owner may be summoned to appear in court to answer to a criminal charge. A court may, instead of, or in addition to a fine, make other orders including that the dog be controlled in a specified manner or removed.

I’m relieved to report that I survived the terrifying ordeal. The vet said I’m OK . . .

It’s just my mummy I’m worried about.

Dog-friendly stops in ML

If you’re out and about and feel like a drink, call into Reflections of India Home and Giftware in Light Common where Grahame and Carolyn Rye have installed a fancy water cooler for dogs. It’s just outside the door in an easy-stop spot. The fountain is powered by electricity so it flows all the time delivering cool, clean water.

Graham and Carolyn are so friendly and generous, that this is one of my favourite shops. And it’s right next door to my other favourite, the butcher shop!

I reckon Light Common is the most dog-friendly street in Mawson Lakes so be sure to steer your owner that way.

Another place I love to visit is Topcon Precision Agriculture in Technology Park. When Mummy delivers Living I go along as her little PR companion. At Topcon, staff always come to Reception to say hello and give me adoring pats. I figure that if staff are so nice to me, they must surely be nice to their customers too. Ed.

Pet care with Dr Brendan

Dr Brendan Maguire is a regular contributor on pet health and care. His advice this month is about the importance of vaccinating your pet.

Vaccinations to protect your pets

One of the best parts of my job is seeing lots of pups and kittens during the early stages of their lives. Whose heart can fail to melt when a puppy gazes up at them, its tail wagging pensively behind, waiting for a reassuring tickle under the chin? I am there to vaccinate them, but I always take time and pleasure in those moments.

Vaccination is crucial for a young animal to protect it from infections which can be picked up from other (infected) animals and, in some cases, the environment. Canine parvovirus in particular, can persist for years on hard surfaces such as pavements and concrete, so it is vital that puppies are fully vaccinated before risking exposure to this. A puppy’s immune system may not respond effectively to vaccination until the pup is at least ten weeks old. Maternal antibodies, if sufficient, may protect the pup when it is very young, but these will fade away and leave the pup susceptible to infection without vaccination.

Once fully vaccinated (one week after the final injection), puppies may venture where they please, protected by their own immunity.

Before this time pups may mix with other vaccinated dogs or pups, but only in safe places

Dogs of Mawson Lakes

(private houses and yards where unvaccinated dogs have not been present).

Revaccination in older pets is important to maintain protection. Modern vaccines can protect against some infections for three years once the initial course is complete (including a dose at 15 months of age, a year after puppy vaccination) but other infections, especially Canine Cough Complex, still requires annual boosters. An annual check is also an opportunity to examine pets for any early signs of disease which may not be obvious to the owner.

The World’s Greatest Shave takes place this month, and I will be taking part, shaving my head to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The rest of the team here at Mawson Lakes Vet Hospital will be taking part too, by colouring their hair. Please pledge some money for this great charity event, at: http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ mawsonlakesvetbrendan

What’s in a ladies handbag?

Members at the launch of Mawson Lakes Toastmasters Club were invited to put their hand into Janet Priest’s bulky handbag and pull out an item, then talk about it in an impromptu speech.

Laughter fill the room as a hair-challenged man pulled out a lady’s hair brush. Now what could he say about that? Another searched for meaning in a packet of peppermints. One poor fellow fished out a ponytail holder, and when it was clear he didn’t have any idea what it was, he was allowed to throw it back and take another dive. It was much easier for the ladies. This fun was part of the one minute impromptu speeches called Table Topics designed to break the ice for beginners and get people talking and laughing.

Mawson Lakes is developing a Toastmasters Club with help from other Toastmasters in the Adelaide area. Hosting the new club is Tee Tree Gully Toastmasters CLub.

Darrell Klar who is part of the leadership team for Mawson Lakes said that Toastmasters is a great training ground for public speaking at a very affordable price. “We develop skills that will enable you to talk for 2 minutes or 20 minutes.”

“We teach lots of tools and tricks to develop confidence, content and delivery so that you can always get your message across, no matter what the occasion or the circumstance,” said Darrell. “Our meetings are all about self expression and having fun.” Ed.

Mawson Lakes Toastmasters Club meets on the first and third Monday of each month at The Mawson Centre at 6.30pm.

Puzzles to make you smarter

KENKEN® is a new mind game invented by a Japanese man Tetsuya Miyamoto. In Japanese “Ken” means wisdom, so “KENKEN” is wisdom squared. For more info goto www.kenken.com

The rules are simple:

 For a 3x3 puzzle, each row and each column must have the numbers 1-3.

 For a 4x4 puzzle, each row and each column must have the numbers 1-4.

 Do not repeat a number in any row or column.

 The numbers in each heavily outlined set of squares, called cages, must combine (in any order) to produce the target number in the top corner of the cage using the mathematical operation indicated.

 Cages with just one box should be filled in with the target number in the top corner.

Puzzles will get harder as the months go by. Solution on page 42.

YO UTH

Earth Week is this month, a window of time where we can make a difference to the wellbeing of the earth. Our Living youth writer Aimée Thomson tells us how.

Switch off the lights this March

Earth hour. The one hour a year that we can make a difference to climate change.

Too many people do not take the time to acknowledge the impact that our actions have on our Earth. We are all too busy thinking about the ‘now’ to care about the consequences of the carbon emissions we are pushing out into the atmosphere, and how this will affect our family and even ourselves in the future.

But, there is one way that every resident of Mawson Lakes can make a change this month. By turning off your lights at 8:30pm on the 31st of March, you can make a difference. Just one hour in darkness (giving us a great excuse to sit with our family and friends and light plenty of candles) from the thousands of people living in Mawson Lakes will allow our Earth to take a breather from those carbon emissions.

So, if you want to do something that helps our planet and our future generations, and is absolutely free and painless, switch off your lights along with the millions from over 135 countries.

Birds of Mawson Lakes

Resident Michael Flynn is a keen bird watcher and photographer, a joy he discovered when he moved to Mawson Lakes 18 months ago. Last year he bought a Nikon D3100 digital SLR camera with a 300mm zoom lens and started a gallery of photographs of the birds he spotted around Mawson Lakes. So far he has photographed 70 species. Mike gives advice on good places to see birds in ML.

Mawson Lakes has wetland waterways, native plantings and a scattering of beautiful old gum trees that provide a wide variety of habitats for birdlife.

My favourite morning walk is along the Railway Wetlands Track. Birds commonly seen on the water include pelicans, ducks, teal, swans, moorhen, grebe, coot and cormorants. Birds sighted wading through the shallows hunting for food, include heron, ibis, crake, dotterel and spoonbill. Keep your ear tuned for the calls of the birds. The black-winged stilt gives a high pitched call as it defends its nesting site, and the Australian reed warbler’s rich melodious song can be heard from the reed beds.

The trees and shrubs propagated and planted by the Mawson Lakes Environment Watch Residents’ Group are now providing home to a variety of birds including sparrow, honeyeaters, wattlebirds and

wrens. It is also home to the Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo, a small bird that does not have the distinctive call of the common cuckoo, but, is however, a nest parasite. Another favourite trail begins at ‘The Watershed’ where there are 2km of walking trails meandering through the watershed wetlands. The trails include interpretive signage and even a bird hide to sit quietly and watch over the wetlands. You are almost guaranteed to sight superb fairy wrens among the dense cover of low shrubs. This is where you could possibly see the sacred kingfisher perched on a branch on the lookout for prey.

Beat disease by staying healthy

Anew physical and healthy lifestyle program was launched at Mawson Lakes last month for people with type 2 diabetes, or at risk of developing diabetes, or other lifestyle diseases.

The 12-week Beat IT program includes exercise activities as part of a holistic approach to lifestyle and behaviour change. Discussion topics include motivation, goal setting, brain gym and nutrition.

Tim Lathlean, an accredited BEAT IT trainer, and a resident of Mawson Lakes, is delivering the course. He said that all levels of weight, height and fitness can join the course which has a focus on healthy eating and staying well.

“We want people to maintain the health gains they make over the 24 training sessions so we will give advice on keeping on track with lifestyle changes.”

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease. It is estimated that 3.2 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Every day 275 people are diagnosed with the lifestyle disease. It is the sixth leading cause of death in Australia. Up to 60% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented.

March

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, and it is commonly recognized as the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Scorpio

The gemstone aquamarine is the blue, or perhaps more correctly, blue-green or aqua variety of the mineral beryl. Aquamarine jewelry is associated with beauty, honesty, loyalty, and happiness.

The hardness and durability of aquamarine make it a fine gemstone, and its light blue or aqua colour makes it a ideal when the harsher colours of some other gemstones would overwhelm or distract from an outfit.

Aquamarine is sometimes found in huge crystals. It is also known in a glassy form, often without showing crystal form, and sometimes with many holes or other odd shapes.

The Exercise Pill

Mawson Lakes residents are a health conscious lot, but what would you say if someone told you that a pill is all you need to take in order to have the benefits of exercising?

According to a new study reported this month in Nature, American researchers have shown that a naturally occurring hormone in both humans and mice called irisin, transforms white fat to brown fat.

White fat serves as a reservoir for calories, while brown fat is used by our bodies to generate heat. Scientists have shown that irisin burns calories, improving insulin processing, and perhaps boosts strength.

The scientists hope this understanding could eventually be used as a treatment for obesity, diabetes and potentially neuromuscular diseases like muscular dystrophy.

Casual treat for the family

But don’t hold your breath, it may be some time yet before a commercially produced “exercise pill” becomes available to the public. So keep active and continue those laps around the lake. It’s too early to stop exercising!

Helping children with reading problems

Difficulties with basic reading and language skills are the cause of most learning problems, according to Dr Maria De Ionno (pictured), psychologist and principal of the Dyslexia and Reading Clinic at Mawson Lakes.

“The key thing for parents is not to hesitate if they suspect their child has a reading difficulty,” said Maria. “Although reading problems are best addressed when caught at a young age, it’s never too late to help your child.”

Indicators of a child with reading problems include, difficulty remembering names and sounds of letters, slowness to learn new words, a lack of concentration when looking at a book, and being easily distracted. Some children will continually reverse letters, such as writing “d” for “b” or “u” for “n”. As they get older a child may be reluctant to read, or read aloud. The child may have trouble sitting still and paying attention and fall behind their classmates. They may be seen as having behavioural problems. It doesn’t take long before the child begins to say “I hate school”.

If you have a child with reading difficuty, you’ve probably heard these comments:

Maria, who will be running workshops at the School Education Expo in May this year (see page 46), said there are many reasons why reading can be hard for a child and it’s important to find the underlying causes and then use learning programs based on scientific principles and research for remediation. “A specialised program can make a huge difference,” said Maria.

RED -EYED TREE FROG

The red-eyed tree frog’s scientific name is Agalychnis callidryas. “Callidryas” comes from the Greek words that mean beautiful tree nymph.

The scientific name for the tree frog family is Hylidae.

Tree frogs, like all frogs, are amphibians.

The red-eyed tree frog’s inner thighs are blue.

Tree frogs have suction disks on their fingers and toes that help them stick to leaves.

Frogs that live in trees tend to walk and climb, rather than hop. They are good climbers, with feet and toes adapted to their lifestyle.

Red-eyed tree frogs are carnivores and eat mainly insects. Fish, dragonflies, and water beetles prey on tadpoles belonging to the redeyed tree frog family.

Sometimes the red-eyed tree frog is known as the red-eyed leaf frog.

Predators of red-eyed tree frogs include snakes, bats, spiders, and birds.

Are you a helicopter parent?

Helicopter parents never stop hovering above their child. They swoop in at a moment’s notice, make all the decisions, fight their child’s battles, argue about fairness and prejudice, interrogate the teachers, argue with the coaches and constantly question the school’s decisions.

They use their mobile phone like an elastic umbilical cord to stay in constant communication with their child. They protect their child at all costs by creating an artificial cushion to shield against every setback, slur, bruise, scrape, unfair action and bad mark.

There is nothing wrong with a parent wanting to be involved, but there is a difference between a parent who is encouraging and supportive and one who is controlling and intervening.

Hyperactive parents don’t allow their child enough space to fail or succeed on their own. Consequently, these children can have difficulty negotiating what they need, getting along with others, using common sense to stay safe, and solving their own problems.

Sure, parents see that it’s a competitive world out there and they want their child to achieve, whether it’s on the debating team, in the swimming squad or on the cello, but if a child interprets a parent’s involvement to mean they always need to be high achieving it can create anxiety, a sense they are never good enough, they are never fulfilling their parents’ expectations. They give up trying because they cannot live up to their parents’ expectations.

Parents need to love their child through the ups and downs of their successes and failures,

completely disassociating “love” and “success.” Often parents struggle to find the right level of support; it isn’t always obvious to know when your child really needs you to step in and when they will benefit more from making their own decisions and taking responsibility for their own actions.

Keep a look out for opportunities for your child to develop their personality, negotiate their own way, get out of their own scrapes and build selfreliance. Hopping out of the helicopter may be the best thing you can do for your child. Ed.
