Some like it cold
The chilly weather hasn’t curtailed activity here in Mawson Lakes and I’ve been busy writing stories and taking photographs for the community magazine on many fronts.
Some people warm up in winter with physical activity outdoors, others go indoors to dance, play and socialise. Take a look at this month’s Centrefold to see what locals like about winter.
NIgella and I adore the mild winters of Adelaide and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. We love going for long walks in the crisp, cool air and I like rugging up in colourful hats, scarves and multiple layers, which I peel off like a purple onion once inside.
Talking about inside . . . there’s an active social life happening indoors in July. The front cover, featuring ML residents Janet and Oryst, gives just a hint. Read about the Winter Festival of
Dance to be held at The Denison Centre and the glamorous act by local Silvi Milans that will open the show. See page 8.
The gorgeous girls from Global Hearts are launching their new business this month with a fanciful red carpet Ladies Night at the Watershed Cafe.
And be sure to book your tickets for the opening night of the Mawson Lakes Photographic Exhibition where you’ll see stunning images of the suburb we all love, and the people we all know, in print, as you sip wine supplied by our Living food and wine writer David Garrick.
There’s a wealth of clever and creative people living in ML and it’s wonderful to see them contributing to the vibrancy of the suburb.
Everybody is invited to these winter warm-up events. Hope to see you there.

As we go to press I have just heard news of the tragic death of beloved Brian Pledger (45) the environmental management officer at Council. Brian was struck from behind by a car while walking his dogs at Lyndoch where he lived.

Fodder for the recycle bin - Advertising junk mail stuffs our letter boxes, litters our pavements and blows about our streets. Last night a thick roll of catalogues was thrown at every driveway in ML and ended up all over the streets. When I went for a walk this morning the soggy mess, wet from the dew, was everywhere. Awful. Environmental pollution. Should be banned.
Jacinta Haynes
Poop bags - I’m a regular walker around the parks, however there is one unfavourite thing about the parks of ML - dog poop on the footpaths. Please dog owners be responsible with your dogs and clean up after them. It would be great if Council could organize for poop bags to be put on the bins (and more bins would be a good idea too). There are 2 bins around Shearwater Lake and both of those have poop bags attached and the path around this lake is always cleaner than anywhere else I walk. Sarah the
dog
Positive outlook - I am attending a leadership program at Adelaide Uni and have been reviewing the ‘Appreciative Inquiry Model’ which identifies and promotes the positive aspects within an organisation. While thinking about the application of this theory to management and morale, it occurred to me that Mawson Lakes Living identifies and highlights the outstanding positive aspects of our community. I believe it plays an important part each month in re-affirming why we love ML so much.

“I run a small home-based business in ML and as soon as I started advertising in Mawson Lakes Living my customer base soared. I got 6 new clients from my last ad. I advertise every month because the magazine reaches a wide, smart audience who don’t have time for junk mail, but who always read their community magazine. I’ve tried other advertising but this is by far is the best for me.”

Unacceptable visual pollution - Residents are noticing a proliferation of advertising boards and tacky notices in Mawson Lakes along the streets, in the walkways, in the garden beds, on the footpaths, at the lights and tied onto poles. This form of visual litter is unacceptable. If you want to advertise, do so in a responsible way. Do not turn Mawson Lakes into a billboard.
M Cutler
Dangerous footpaths in ML - Advertising boards on footpaths are a hazard in Mawson Lakes and I write to warn others from my bad experience. I was walking along the footpath in one of the shopping streets when I tripped on a bill board and came crashing to the ground causing damage to my knees, elbow and mouth. Footpaths are designed as safe places for people and we should be able to move along them without fear of running into dangerous obstacles.
Kathy Leevy
Message from Council about signage
The issue of signage was discussed with Mawson Lakes traders approximately 6 months ago at a business forum. Traders were informed of the regulations around the proper display of signage and that there are penalties for breaching the respective by laws. I will forward concerns to Council to have inspectors contact the respective businesses and rectify the situation.

Word-of-mouth builds business
Home-based businesses are reaching out to the people of ML to let them know what they have to offer. Three new businesses are profiled here. All agree that word-of-mouth promotion is essential to success so here are 6 marketing tips to get people talking with enthusiasm about your products, your service, your organisation and your networking opportunities.
Ways to generate positive word-of-mouth promotion
Talk: encourage people to talk about you. Be generous. Give them something to take away. Topics: give people a reason to talk, such as something different, excellent service, special offers, a fun experience, good advice . . .
Treat: people well: Be courteous to everyone. Don’t whinge. Look for the positives. Smile.
Tools: have business cards, brochures and banners. Spread your message frequently via advertising to reach a local audience. Build a likeable community profile.
Take part: sponsor events, attend functions, network, be seen and be heard frequently. Be seen as a community player.
Track: measure and understand what people are saying about you by asking for feedback and listening.
Source: “Marketing Matters” by Dr Linda Vining
Business: Global Hearts Link
Owners: Winni Kate & Sibi Thompson
Type of business: Friendship and dating agency
“People are happiest when they have meaningful relationships, but meeting people can be difficult, so we match personalities and preferences and bring people together,” said Winnie.
Points of difference: We specialise in interracial relationships. You don’t have to go overseas to find a partner, we have a great diversity of people in Australia and we can coach you in the dating process. We build your confidence and help you create the right first impression. We believe that you should never lose hope of being in a successful relationship.
Building word-of-mouth: Networking is the essence of our business so we hold dinner parties and social events to facilitate connections.

Business: Impressionable Kids
Owner: Amy Iles
To always remember your baby, your loved ones and your pets, Amy will take an imprint of their feet and hands, and turn the sculptures into framed memorabilia, alongside photographs, medals and other items of significance. She does name frames, custom framing, and birth collages. If you are getting married she will frame special items in one attractive presentation.
Amy, who is studying accounting at TAFE, opened her home-based business in ML last month and described it as a big and courageous step. “When I see how happy people are when they receive a treasured keepsake, I feel very satisfied,” she said. Awareness raising: I am joining networks in ML and going to markets and playgroups. I advertise in Living because everybody in ML reads it. I am keen to make strategic alliances for mutual benefit with other ML businesses.
See advertisement on page 25.
Business: DM Hair Lounge
Owner: Danielle Martin
Danielle had been a hairdresser for 15 years when she decided she needed more flexibility in her life, so she converted the front room of her house in Elder Circuit into a professional salon catering for women, men and children. She has designed a beautiful, peaceful environment that evokes relaxation. The outlook across a small park is soothing and there is plenty of parking.
Building word-of-mouth: Positive word of mouth is essential in my business so I attend to small details and provide more than a hairdo. I pamper my customers and offer one-on-one service and creative ideas.
Marketing: To get the word out I have designed corporate fliers and business cards, put a sign outside my house, used social media and advertised in the community magazine. As an incentive to come and visit I offer an introductory gift voucher.

Garrick, Food and Wine Consultant
Our Living food and wine consultant, David Garrick, writes a column each month about the best culinary delights that Mawson Lakes has to offer and some of the best value wines that South Australia has to offer. He also tempts us to venture further and try other eating experiences.
By the Plate: Darshanas Restaurant
Mawson Lakes local Indian restaurant has been under new management since September 2011, and with the purchase of a fully imported Indian Clay Tandoor Oven, a new menu and a well balanced wine list, these guys mean business. All the old favourites of Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma and Beef Vindaloo are on the menu. The meat is cooked on site traditionally in the Tandoor Oven ensuring the taste of India with every bite.
During my visit I had the pleasure of tasting the Tandoori Platter for two - a combination of Chicken Tikka, Lamb Cutlets, Tawa Beef, Tandoori Prawns and Barramundi Tikka with salad and dip. The meats were tender and retained their flavours throughout.
Whether it is for lunch, dinner, the buffet or the ever-so-efficient home delivery, Darshanas is well worth a visit.
Wine by the Bottle: Majella, 2011 ‘Musician’ Cabernet Shiraz, Coonawarra.
This wine is unmistakably Coonawarra at an unbelievable price. The aroma is bursting with blackcurrant, mulberry and herbs. The palate
has all the classics of Coonawarra blackcurrant flavours up front and fine silky tannins that integrate like a classic love song, to produce this little gem. Enjoy anytime at this price!
Beyond the Lake:
Lickerish Kitchen & Bar –Semaphore
My Restaurant Rules is where it all began when the 2005 winners, John and Justine Hall created a new venture in Semaphore. John’s menu is perfectly suited to the ambience of casual fine dining, including a mixture of gourmet entrees, pizzas served on rustic wooden platters, mouth watering mains and desserts to make any sweet tooth weak at the knees. On my plate, Sirloin of Angus Beef with a Braised Beef and Mushroom Pie was cooked perfectly, and the pie with its sweet filling was perfect with the Gemtree Shiraz. My wife had the Fish of the Day, Spencer Gulf Snapper with red papaya, coriander and sweet corn and the flesh of the fish just melted in her mouth and the accompanying flavours jumped off the palate creating a circus of flavours.
Out the front is Justine serving an extensive wine list that will please even the harshest of critics, ensuring the total dining experience is complete from entree to dessert. All in all, delicious!

Community policing to keep Mawson Lakes safe
A Neighbourhood Police Officer has been assigned to Mawson Lakes as part of a new innovative community policing initiative.
First Class Constable Jessica Wilson will be on foot patrol getting to know people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. You’ll see her in the shopping centre, along the footpaths, visiting businesses, in the parks, at the railway interchange and maybe even on her bicycle traversing the villages of ML.
Jessica says her role is to serve local people and interact with the public, while at the same time to investigate and attend to crime in the area.
“Higher visibility of police increases community safety and reduces crime,” she said. “The eyes and ears of the community can help keep Mawson Lakes safe.”
Nothing is too small to report. If you are concerned about egging, hoon drivers, harassment, bullying, stalking, drunkenness, unsociable behaviour, domestic violence or theft, or any other matter, Jessica wants to hear about it.
Jessica grew up in county SA with a father who is a police officer so she understands the value of building good relationships with local people who know what’s happening in their surroundings. She joined the force at 23 years old. Now as a mother of two young boys, she is particularly aware of the concerns of families about safety.
If you are having a teenage party let her know beforehand so she is only a call away if needed. And she is always happy to give advice on safety issues. Ed.

Living YO UTH
The Future. Panic Not!
For Year 12 students such as myself, a scary time is approaching. With only 5 months left of our schooling, you would think we would all be itching to get it over with. Apparently not! After speaking with a few of my friends lately, I am noticing a growing trend. My friends are afraid to leave school. They are scared of losing the routine we have been developing over the past 13 or so years.
Schooling life is very rigid. You wake up at the same time, eat at the same time, go to the same building, and wear the same clothes. What happens when this flow breaks and we are reluctantly pushed out into the world, not knowing what will happen from one day to the next?
In my opinion, I acknowledge that this can be a very scary time, but on the other hand, it is such an exciting time! The next chapter of our lives is about to begin, and I can’t wait!
Many fear that they will pick the wrong university course, or get a job they are unhappy with, but this is part of all the learning we about to discover. There will be roadblocks. There will be hard times. But there will also be good times.
Embarking on this new journey of selfdiscovery shouldn’t be looked at with apprehension and fear, but rather with excitement and anticipation.
So do not fear the upcoming adventure, instead wholeheartedly embrace it. Go forward and make your mark on the world.

Dreaming Dogs by Nigella
According to dog researchers, dogs do dream. At the structural l evel, the brains of dogs are similar to those of humans and during sleep the brain wave patterns go through the same stages of electrical activity as humans, which suggests that dogs dream.
I’m a dreamer. Mummy tells me that when I’m asleep my tail twitches, my legs shake and I whimper.
My best dreams are about family holidays, like our last adventure on the Limestone Coast. I dream of playing with mummy, daddy, Ben and Sophie on deserted beaches that stretch forever; of eating delicious meat pies from the bakery at Robe; of cycling the hills at Beachport and camping in our caravan at Southend under a full moon.
Recently I met another dreamer when I was walking along Dry Creek. Luna is a shiny brown labrador and she told me about her dreams of far-away places.
She and her little mate Nela (pictured) have just arrived from Finland. They had to travel a long way on a noisy aeroplane to get to Australia and then go into quarantine for 3 months in Melbourne. Luna said this is the stuff of doggie nightmares.
While locked up she dreamed of her carefree life in Finland, of swimming in the Baltic Sea and playing in the thick snow and of walks in her coastal village and eating raw fish. She said that her nose twitches when she dreams of the rich smell of malt from the brewery and the spicy pine leaves of Scandinavian trees. “Your gum trees are so strange,” she said to me.
Now Luna and Nela are reunited with their mummy Erika and they play along the green grassy banks of Dry Creek. They don’t understand English but that’s no problem for us; we just talked doggish. They say they are picking up the language from all the friendly people in Mawson Lakes who stop to say hello.
In 3 years time when they return to Finland
I’m sure they will have many happy dreams of Mawson Lakes to take home.

Phoenix Society moves into Mawson Lakes
When Jane Doyle from the Phoenix Society saw Endeavour House in Technology Park she immediately recognised the perfect place to locate the Society’s telemarketing centre.
The Phoenix Society provides employment and training for people with disabilities across South Australia through general assembly and packaging, digital print and mailing, labelling and timber products. At Mawson Lakes the organisation has established Phoenix Connect, a contact centre that employs 47 people. Jane Doyle is the contact centre manager.
Phoenix Connect undertakes telemarketing of lottery campaigns for the Phoenix Society which is the Society’s primary income source. In addition, the centre manages telemarketing campaigns for third party customers that include the Adelaide Football Club and the Animal Welfare League SA.
Andrew Ormandy, General Manager of Business Development, said the Phoenix Society wants to expand its footprint in the northern region and Mawson Lakes is an ideal central location. “Some of our staff do not drive so we value a safe environment where people can walk to transport, the shops, services and local facilities.”
“There is also synergy for us in Technology Park because the contact centre uses advanced communication technologies,” he said.
“At Mawson Lakes we are set to grow. We are ready to serve more businesses in the northern region and we have capacity to employ more staff,” he said. Ed.

Ruby
July birthstone
The gemstone Ruby is associated with the values of love, success, integrity, passion, and promise. Ruby is the July birthstone and the Capricorn Zodiac stone.
The red variety of the mineral Corundum is the second hardest natural mineral known to mankind. The red colour in ruby is caused by trace amounts of the element chromium. Rubies have a famous place in science - the first lasers were made from artificial ruby crystals. They still are used for this purpose although other materials offer improved efficiency. Some natural ruby crystals show the fluorescence (actually very short term phosphorescence) that makes a laser possible.

Pet care with Dr Brendan
I recently attended the annual Australian Veterinary Conference, where one of the speakers was discussing the Human-Animal Bond. He described many examples of the power of this bond, and the benefits that pet ownership and animal companionship have been shown to provide.
I was reminded of a client, whose companion we had recently been treating for cancer. He wrote me a letter to thank the team for our help and support during his friend’s illness. In the letter, he described his relationship with his dog with eloquence and love. It was clear what a great loss it would be when the dog died, but what an extraordinary role he had played in his owner’s life.
I realized that this was why I enjoy being a vet. I get to help people get the best out of a wonderful relationship with their pet, by respecting the bond. How lucky am I? See you next month!

Dreamtime art tiles tell the story of the past
An artist in residence at Endeavour College helped students make mosaic dreamtime art tiles in traditional indigenous style that have been placed in a garden setting at the Endeavour Centre.
Forty two tiles of animals drawn from the landscape around Mawson Lakes 5,000 years ago are depicted in the colourful outdoor pathway display.
Year 10 student Shannon Brown said the 10-week assignment was not just about making mosaic tiles. “We developed a deeply personal experience as we did research and

listened to indigenous visitors explain their cultural heritage and how aboriginal people intertwined art and daily life.”
The students said that the artwork began to speak to them as they learned more and more about Kaurna culture. Ed.

Recycled Water creates an oasis at Mawson Lakes
All homes and businesses in Mawson Lakes are connected to a recycled water system separate from the mains water supply. Treated stormwater and wastewater is pumped to properties along a separate lilac pipe system.
At Mawson Lakes, stormwater runoff from roads and Dry Creek is captured and treated via an extensive nearby wetland system called The Greenfields Wetlands. Dry Creek collects one third of Adelaide’s stormwater run-off.
Lilac taps indicate recycled water which IS suitable for:
Watering lawns, parks and gardens.
Flushing toilets.
Washing cars.
Filling ornamental ponds (with no fish) and water features.
Watering fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Recycled water at Mawson Lakes is NOT safe for:
Drinking, cooking or kitchen use.
Personal washing, such as baths, showers, bidets and hand basins.
Washing clothes.
Household cleaning.
Filling swimming pools and spas.
Playing under sprinklers or other recreational contact.
Washing pets or filling ponds that hold fish.
The Greenfields Wetlands (see map on page 2) purifies stormwater through contact with aquatic vegetation. The water is then stored in underground aquifers and re-used as part of the recycled water system. This reduces reliance on fresh potable water and reduces wastewater entering the Gulf St Vincent.
The recycled system reduces usage of mains water in Mawson Lakes by 50% compared to the Adelaide average. In fact, the Mawson Lakes community saves approximately 88 mega litres of water per year. That is equivalent to more than 800 Olympic sized swimming pools!
Residents pay for recycled water ($2.06/1,000 litres). Water restrictions do not apply to recycled water usage at Mawson Lakes.
That’s why I tell outsiders that we live in a fertile oasis at Mawson Lakes! Ed.

What PLANT is that?
Bottlebrush
Bottlebrush plants (Callistemon) are hardy Australian natives with bright red bushy flowers that resemble bottle brushes. They are long lived, versatile, require minimal maintenance and they thrive in damp, poorly drained soils, but will also take a dry spot.
Nectar-feeding birds and insects find them irresistible.
