Baubles and Bows
At Mawson Lakes Living we love the colour and the mood of Christmas S M and our office at 43 Parkview Drive is decorated with a big bright tree made out of rope lights that stretch all the way from the roof to the garden. But we need you to make the decorations. This year our decorations are baubles and bows. HR E R RY C I S T M A
And we need a little music for a festive vibe so a trio of live musicians will present a Christmas Concert on 15 December in the MLL grounds. You're invited for a singsong. Nothing too big or loud, just friendly good tidings. Bring your foldup chairs for an 8pm start, a torch to read the songsheet and some insect repellent. If you are a musician (any age) and you'd like to put down your busker's hat at MLL over Christmas, give me a call. We get thousands of visitors. Where will you do your Christmas shopping this year? Looking for something different? In our
Christmas Guide we bring you ideas from creative and original sources. See the Centrefold. Frivolity is the mood for this issue and we hope you'll find a few good laughs inside. And don't miss this month's cheeky Mind Massage. Putting Mawson Lakes Living together each month is a huge task so I’d like to thank all the volunteers who help me produce and deliver the magazine to your door. A special thank you to Nicole (designer), Sally (advertising), Gayatri (journalist) and Erik (deliveries). Together we all form a dedicated workforce that gives meaning to the words Everything is better together We'll be back in January with lots of New Year news.

Online shopping with Freckle McGee Australians are increasingly turning to online stores enticed by better return policies, anytime shopping and improved delivery. Sarah Spence from the Peppercorns in Mawson Lakes has set up her own online store called Freckle McGee selling an eclectic range of homewares and fashion items. She said the most popular shopping time to buy online is between 7 pm to 9 pm. So too is 2 am to 4 am when many mothers who wake up to feed their babies end up shopping online. After 25 years in retail Sarah decided to put her buying, selling and merchandising skills into her own family business. She uses her online store to showcase and promote products sourced from local businesses, such as perfumed candles by Fragrance Express, another home business in Mawson Lakes. "Supporting local businesses is ingrained in the Australian ethos. Most of my products are locally sourced, from small/family businesses and are not mass produced. South Australia is home to many amazing artists and through my online store, I try to provide a platform for them and their products. We sell picture frames, jewellery, home and glass wares, and candles, among other things," she said.
Sarah is holding a Christmas Evening where you can see her products and buy Christmas presents. Enquiries to 0437 409 366 - Gayatri Nair

People Profile
Oriana Stoici
Mesmerising through quirky art If you are looking for unique gifts this Christmas, Oriana Stoici’s art may be just the thing for you. Oriana is only 20, but this Mawson Lakes resident seems sure and driven about her life choice. Her unique brand of drawings – big lips, beautiful eyes, and quirky hairstyles - are winning hearts on social media. Her creations are mainly a mix of Copic markers and coloured pencils, but she also experiments with paints. Oriana’s quirky art has seen her get many requests from people who want her to draw portraits of their loved ones. Oriana says her art can be categorized into two sets: graphic or Copic art, and commissioned work. Though she likes the commissioned work as it keeps her afloat, she loves graphic art.
"Graphic art enables me to create unique pieces of work. Graphic pens are expensive, but the result looks like a digital printout. That combined with the right use of colour pens and pencils, makes the artwork look magnificent, and computer generated," she says. Oriana has been drawing since she began holding a pen, but her art truly became important when she turned to it for comfort during her dark days. "Grade 12 was a tough time for me, I couldn’t cope with examination pressures.
To vent my frustrations, I started drawing on some cue cards lying around. I never felt more relaxed! That’s when I knew art was the only thing I wanted to do," she says. By Gayatri Nair

The effects of birth trauma For many reasons some babies have a tougher start in life than others. Years later, the effects can be seen in their learning, behaviour, and on brain maps. A ( 5) suffered anoxia at birth and is now showing developmental delays and poor executive functioning. M (10) had forceps delivery and is now showing poor ability to coordinate global and specific tasks, such as reading spelling and writing. Any pressure put on the brain at birth can slow the development of some brain areas, and show up on brain maps as excessive electrical activity.

The one important thing to remember is that they can be easily “tuned up” to “normalise” functioning - behaviour flexibility, learning, moods and thinking. A Christmas Message from the Mayor of Salisbury, Gillian Aldridge Happy Summer everyone, the weather is beautiful and Mawson Lakes is looking absolutely wonderful! Mawson Lakes is really a hive of activity, across the City of Salisbury there is currently over $233 million of approved development, of this, there are more than 110 development approvals valued at almost $13 million in Mawson Lakes alone. Some of this work is already visible, whilst some is yet to commence. This just goes to show the level of faith developers and industry have in our city. But it’s not all business, this is such a wonderful time of year in the lead up to Christmas, New Year and then of course Australia Day. I encourage everyone to head down to Carisbrooke Park, (just along Main North Rd), on Australia Day between 8am and 2pm for a great family day. Council is proud to sponsor a free breakfast with plenty of entertainment and a kids zone with wellpriced rides and plenty more. I am also pleased to be the first to announce that for the very first time The Mawson Centre will be a venue for the Secret Garden in 2018. More information will be made available soon.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Gillian Aldridge, Mayor of Salisbury E-mail GAldridge@salisbury.sa.gov.au Phone 08 8406 8262 Mobile 0411 703 706
A TIME FOR CELEBRATION In our household, Christmas is a time for celebration and for getting together with family and friends. For remembering the good things that have happened over the last year and looking forward to things to come. For singing carols and giving presents to three happy little girls.
Unfortunately though, for many in our community that is not the case and it can be a lonely and isolating time for them. A time when they need our help. There are many things that we can do to help those that are in need. Giving to one of our local charity groups is a great way to help but not every one can afford the money or time. If you can’t then consider looking out for an elderly neighbour. Don’t just assume they are OK, but check. Also, please be extra careful on our roads at this time of year.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Michael

Entrance to Heaven Three men die on Boxing Day and go to heaven, where they’re met by Saint Peter. "In order to get into heaven," he tells them: "You must each produce something from your Christmas experience." The first man digs into his pockets and pulls out a match and lights it. "This represents a candle of hope." Impressed, Peter lets him in. The second man pulls out a tangle of keys and shakes them. "These are bells." He’s allowed in too. "So," Peter says to the third man, "what do you have?" The third man grins and shows him a pair of red panties. "What do these have to do with Christmas?" asks Peter. "They’re Carol’s."

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
ARTHRITIS Arthritis in the feet is a very common problem, which can have far reaching effects on the body and general wellbeing. There are different forms of arthritis with different causes and treatments, however, all can cause foot pain and compromise lifestyle. Foot pain and bony lumps and bumps make it difficult to find comfortable shoes, and this increases the likelihood of corns, callus and blisters due to increased local shoe pressure. In addition to general foot pain when walking, the body has to work harder to maintain stability, putting stress on other joints, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to injuries, pain and an increased risk of falls. Discomfort can result in reduced mobility thus reducing exercise, fitness, socializing and overall wellbeing. Some things to consider; •
• •
well fitting shoes to offer support, stability, comfort and cushioning. Width, depth and style of shoe are crucial to ongoing comfort. Podiatrists can assess feet and provide orthoses( customized insoles) to improve foot function and comfort. padding can be used to offload pressure areas on toes and under feet to reduce pressure and discomfort.
If arthritic pain in your feet is holding you back call 8262 9999 for an assessment.

There’s a lot happening in Mawson Lakes and I write to tell you about some developments. As your councillor, I have initiated numerous initiatives such as the monthly ‘Coffee with the Councillor’ that helps me understand your grievances better.

In line with my election commitments, I opposed the 3% Council rate rise and the construction of the $43 million ‘Hub’. I co-founded the Mawson Lakes Lions Club, which organised a successful Daffodil Day cancer fundraiser, initiated Neighbourhood Watch with Police and organised a Clean Up Australia Day and a Business Breakfast. Lobbying for a Post Office is a priority. A push for duplication of Elder Smith Road and the construction of a multi-storey carpark continues under my advocacy. A few other things I’m working on include a Men’s Health Breakfast for Movember – to help raise funds and awareness for cancer and suicide prevention, a return to Dogs Day Out and other cultural events that bring the community together. I support the extension of Fringe activities in March into Mawson Lakes with the Salisbury Secret Garden. I’m also organising a Xmas Carols Working Party to bring Carols back next year. Thank you to Andrew Murray and the team at Council’s Mawson Centre for helping organise the Christmas Market. I am grateful for the services of staff and volunteers who contribute in a multitude of ways, and to every resident and business owner for trusting me with your vote. I'm looking ahead for sponsorship, volunteers and community support for 2018. Contact me if there is anything I can do to help.

Planning a lifestyle change Engineer Tom Man and his wife Judy (pictured) are thinking about retirement. Having raised three sons, they are getting ready to change their lifestyle and enjoy the comforts of a modern open-plan home. "We are taking it slowly and considering different retirement offers." " Downsizing won’t be easy," said Judy. "We are still active so we want a spacious place where we can pursue our interests. We have looked at a few retirement places and we are still thinking about our next move."
"As soon as we walked into Trinity Green on an Open Day we could feel the community spirit that Trinity Green is famous for. In addition to elegant, architect designed homes, the beautiful gardens and extensive natural environment surrounding the village impressed us." Open Days allow people considering retirement to visit the Village without making any commitments. It’s a perfect time to look at how the design of each house at Trinity Green is age-friendly with wide corridors, large storage areas and a separate compact laundry.
Engineer Tom Man and his wife Judy (pictured) are thinking about retirement.
In the kitchen the roller cupboards are low for easy reach and the ovens are at waist height. Electrical switches are at waist level and medical alert facilities are inbuilt. All of this makes for low maintenance and safe, easy living. If you would like to look at Trinity Green in detail there will be Open Days in 2018. Contact 8359 0237 to go on the mailing list.

Kid's Pages Puzzle solutions on page 31 Sami Jmel in Year 8 wrote a poem about caring. Here is an edited version that shows the depth of his thinking.
WHAT WE CARE ABOUT A man was born with no hands, blind and deaf. How does that make you feel? Let’s be honest, we don’t care, it doesn’t affect us. To us Facebook feels much more real. A dog was born with 2 broken legs, he is blind. His owners abandoned him as a puppy. We say "How could people be so unkind?" He got so many hits, he’s famous, how lucky. We care more about the dog than the human. It is terrible to think that we are so selfish That we’d be more upset about a scratch on our van Or a restaurant because we hated a dish. Something that’s not even part of our race Gets more sympathy than one of us. How did we fall so far from grace? When did we stop being generous? We care more about things than we care about people. How selfish and how self-centred are we? It is Just down right sad, horrible even Perverted to think that no-one cares except me About a people dying, starving or even being tortured. No instead we care about some dog, and cry crocodile tears While innocent men and women are slaughtered We care more about hits from our peers.

Outback
with Nigella
At Mawson Lakes we have two supermarkets so it's hard to imagine driving for two hours to get to a supermarket and two hours back home. That's how long it takes the people of Wirraminna Station in outback SA to do their shopping.
County dogs in remote places love company, but it was tough going for me to keep up with her because the saltbush is filled with prickles. Zara just ploughed through and the spikes didn’t bother her, but my tender feet and little legs were no match for her stride.
If you live in the outback things are BIG and distances are great as I found when we stayed on a big cattle station way out in the desert.
She wanted to show me everything, so first stop was the hen house. It gets so hot that three of their hens died last summer from heat stress. They bought new varieties and hope they will last this summer. Then Zara took me on a long walk to a back shed because there was something special she wanted to show me.
Here I met the farm dog Zara (pictured). She’s a red kelpie and she's allowed to roam all over her 3,000km property. Fancy having a backyard this big and no leash! As soon as I hit the dust (jumped out of our car) Zara came bounding over and said: "Hey little dog, welcome to my place. Want to have a look around?"
28
Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 126 - December 2017
It was an ultralight aeroplane used to herd cattle. She walked me right around it so I could sniff the petrol, then she was off again calling me to walk along the dirt runway. It was red and dusty and went on for 2 km and at the end I was as red as Zara. Everything was orange/red. When we got to Port Augusta on the way home, mummy dunked me in one of those dog wash tubs at a petrol station. The car got a wash and so did I. Nice to be back to original white!
Christmas Recipe: Chocolate Ripple 'cake' This recipe (pictured on the cover) is so simple to make, it's a perfect activity for the kids to get involved in and results in a deliciously moist and chocolatey 'cake' with very little effort!
PREP TIME:
INGREDIENTS
25 mins
900mL thickened cream
CHILL TIME:
2x packets Chocolate Ripple biscuits
SERVES:
mixed berries/cherries to decorate
6 hours or overnight 8-10 people
METHOD
Beat cream with an electric mixer until firm peaks form. Spread approx 1 tablespoon of cream onto a biscuit then sandwich with another biscuit. Continue spreading cream and sandwiching biscuits together into your chosen shape. Position biscuits on their sides to form a log as shown, or use a springform pan to provide a round base for a wreath shape. Alternatively, you can simply stack them up alongside each other in a square. Cover your completed 'cake' with more whipped cream before chilling overnight. When ready to serve, touch up with a bit more cream and decorate with berries and cherries.
Santa or Satan? Sign on a church noticeboard: "Come to our Christmas camp that includes a packed program of family entertainment, a crèche, excellent cuisine, and a visit from Satan."
