Goodbye January, Hello February Hearts, flowers and sweet treats are the symbols of the month, so you'll find romantic images in our liftout. At Mawson Lakes Living we're all girls, some young, some older, and we all delight in the month of February. It's Valentine's Day on Wednesday 14 February so we've selected a romantic cover with an enchanting wedding dress made by one of Adelaide's leading bridal designers who has established her new studio right here in Mawson Lakes. Read about it on page 8. On my table is a bowl of the most dazzling red roses delivered to my door the other day. My

admirer is a tall, handsome man who knows how much I like to fill my house with quality fresh flowers so he always places his order at the Mawson Lakes Florist. The shop has lots of choice for Valentine's Day so open to page 18 and leave this on the table for that 'special person' to see and place their order early, especially for roses. This month I am delighted to announce our first Beautiful Garden Award. Thea from Trinity Green has a small front yard that's always full of colour in every season, and a joy to walk past. She calls it her "licorice allsorts garden" See why, and learn her gardening tips on page 7. There's beauty everywhere in Mawson Lakes but we need to work together to keep it that way, A new app that alerts Council to maintenance issues is on page 4, and you can do something practical by lending your support to Clean Up Australia Day next month. Details on page 5. See you at the assembly point with my pick-up stick and gardening gloves. Wishing you a month filled with love.

have your say...

Driving like an old codger My granddaughter hitched a ride with me from Mawson Lakes to the city. She's a modern young woman, always in a hurry, and, as such, she found my driving far from perfect. Halfway into town she laughingly said, "Hey grandad you dive like an old codger." She's right. I stick to the speed limit, leave a good space between the car in front, hog the left lane, stop at stop signs, give way to pedestrians and take a wide sweep around bicycles, don't race the amber light or squeeze through the end of the light cycle. By modern day standards, until I can weave in and out of traffic, text while driving, tailgate, talk on my iPhone and do burnouts, I really don't make the grade. Sam 60+ Local Services App After living away for 3 years we have returned to reside at Mawson Lakes. We are loving reconnecting with our favourite local spots and activities, including the monthly delivery of Mawson Lakes Living. But I'm hearing complaints from residents about the local council and the lack of maintenance of our public spaces. Given the large size of Salisbury Council it's fair to say they are not always aware of maintenance issues until reported. That’s why 'My Local Services' app is so handy. This app, created by the Local Government Association of SA, allows you to report local maintenance issues whilst you are out and about, at any time of day or night! I spotted uneven pavers on the footpath which almost tripped up a neighbour walking past. By whipping out the smart phone, opening the app, taking a photo, selecting an appropriate category and filling in a couple of fields I gave details to Council and I was pleasantly surprised that they repaired the uneven pavers within 3 days. Use of this service by Mawson Lakes residents helps Council maintain our beautiful public spaces to our satisfaction, as well as guaranteeing that our higher-than-average rates are being spent in our local environment. The app is free from the app store. Andre Stuyt

Road test Everybody at work tested themselves on the road rules on the back cover of MLL/Nov and nobody got all 6 questions correct, but it certainly stirred up good discussion. I took note that drivers only need stay left when the speed limit is 80kph or above. To those roaring down the road, tooting their horns for others to get out of their way, you don't own the road and noone is obliged to get out of your way. Tailgating is illegal. You should travel at least 3 seconds behind the car in front. Dana Mason Speed limits Following on from the Road Rules in MLL/Nov it should be pointed out that speed limits are the MAXIMUM speed. Going slower is OK and certainly not illegal. Cyril Mccurkey Bridge crossing What a stupid design to build a primary school across two sites separated by a low causeway that floods several times a year. Kids and teachers trudge back and forth over this lowlying dangerous causeway. Now the council is installing flood gates that close when the creek is up, when what the site needs is a proper bridge with elevation and security rails like the steel pedestrian bridges recently built upstream across Dry Creek. The school crossing has been an ongoing issue since the school was built and until a safe bridge is constructed the problem will remain. Concerned Parents Resident's Card Residents are being shortchanged when it comes to parking in our own suburb. Out-of-suburb commuters and uni people steal our parking spaces, (MLL/Jan) so here's an idea. Can we have a 'resident's card' - something to carry in our purse or pocket, or to add to our digital wallet, with the idea that residents could use the card to access designated parking spaces e.g. at the Mawson Centre, or reserved resident's spaces at the interchange. Also maybe at Foodland once the uni students begin to invade the new car park. Council could issue the card each year to ratepayers with the rate notices. Phil Bassoni Continued on page 6

Test Yourself on Roundabout Rules Trying to understand roundabout rules is enough to have some people's heads going round in circles. Here are some of the trickiest roundabout situations you'll come across as originally printed in RAA's SAMotor magazine. Solution is on page 30.

1

Which car gives way in the picture above?

2

Is it OK for this truck to turn right from the left lane? What should the car do?

3 What's the rule if there's a cyclist next to me when I'm waiting to enter a roundabout?

4 Do I have to indicate when I'm leaving a roundabout? What should each car do in this situation?

Clean Up Australia Day in Mawson Lakes Sunday March 4th, 9am

Community Conversations continued from page 4 Surprise under wraps Linda, congratulations on your most recent community award (MLL/Jan). Over many years I have witnessed your unsurpassed contribution to our community. In addition to a much-loved magazine every month, I have seen you establish the Mawson Lakes Photography Club, the Mawson Lakes Garden Club, the Mawson Lakes Chamber of Commerce and I believe you were the first member of Toastmasters, and a founding member of Mawson Lakes Lions Club. And of course Dogs Day Out was your initiative. I'll never forget when you staged a sparkling community concert with opera singer Grace Bawden on the university lawn. You sponsor and encourage all sorts of activities from rowing to local artists, so this award is a reflection of a commitment of service to others. There's a whisper that you are organising a unique community event for October. Can't wait for you to take the wraps off this one. Jim North

Recycling soft plastics I drive to Coles at Ingle Farm to recycle my soft plastics in their recycle bin, so I was pleased to see a plastic bag recycling bin at Woolworths Mawson Lakes. However, when I asked at the counter whether they would accept other forms of soft plastics (such as chip packets), the staff said that they only accept plastic bags. A bit of a shame, but better than nothing. I also went to Romeo's Foodland and noticed that they didn't have a soft plastics bin, so I asked at the counter. The staff said they have requested a bin. So hopefully in due time Mawson Lakes residents will have a convenient way of recycling their soft plastics. Daniel Johnson 6

Who are public servants My husband works in cancer research in a government medical institute. He is very committed to his work protecting the public from illness. He labours long and hard and is paid by the government, therefore he is a 'public servant'. Other public servants are teachers in public schools, doctors and nurses in public hospitals, fire fighters, ambulance drivers, disability workers, coroners, to name a few crucial roles. Public servants take emergency phone calls, drive buses and trains, help the poor, disabled, abused and neglected and fight crime (police). In fact 73 per cent of full-time employees in SA are public servants. Any claim by any government to reduce the public sector is a threat to the services we depend upon. Is this what we want? Ellen Eggislaw, Shoalhaven Noise, rubbish and hoons I write in response to the letter by Gordon Reynolds (MLL/Jan) regarding noise, rubbish and hoons. I have seen and spoken to residents at the apartment block lodging the complaint. Rubbish has drastically improved since council increased the regularity of emptying bins. The owners of the business below the apartment block encourage people to dispose of their rubbish verbally and through signs. Complaints about noise and hoon driving have been referred to SAPOL as it's the police who need to catch hoons. Councillor Beau Brug Council approves Community Hub I write in response to the letter by Trish Clarkson (MLL/Jan) and I agree that Mawson Lakes needs the improvements she mentioned. Many have spoken to me about this and I agree that ML needs more council assistance to keep it up to scratch as a quality area to live, work and play. I would like it noted that I did oppose the Hub when voting on it in December as per my election promise. Unfortunately I write to advise that the motion to build the $43 million community hub was successful. Councillor Beau Brug

Beautiful Garden Award

A Licorice Allsorts Garden A garden full of colour and movement is a joy to those who pass by, and so it is with the garden of Thea Hockridge in Trinity Green. Her cottage garden is only small but it spills over her fence and into a pretty street, complimented by neighbouring gardens. She calls it her "licorice allsorts" garden. "My garden has grown by trial and error," she says as she points to delicate evening primrose mingled with seaside daisies, petunias, geraniums, alyssum, salvia and a line of roses. Several clumps of mini agapanthus add colour and character. Regular pruning is the key to prolific flowering, according to Thea. Many people are unsure when to prune so I say to them, "let your garden tell you. As soon as flowering stops it's time to prune."

Beautiful

GARDEN AWARD Awarded to a garden that beautifies the streetscape for all to enjoy

"I sprinkle blood and bone and dynamic lifter regularly on the soil and top it up with a weak solution of liquid fertiliser every two weeks because the plants love a good feed." "I leave my worries at the front door and enter a lovely living space where every day there is something new to look at." Thea's garden is at 26 Brunswick Place. Look out for the Mawson Lakes Living Beautiful Garden Award in her front yard. Ed

HOLE in ONE!

Brian Tucker is a Mawson Lakes Living volunteer who delivers the magazine each month. He is also a member of the Mawson Lakes Golf Club. He has been playing golf for approximately 45 years and since retiring at Trinity Green likes having a golf course virtually on his doorstep. On November 14th while playing in the Tuesday tournament he was delighted to score a hole-in-one on the 13th par three hole. Brian said that if he can do it with a handicap of 31 there is hope for any golf hacker.

Eliza French - turning threads into magic Exquisite romantic gowns from Eliza French are a feature of the couture fashion industry that has set up in a cottage in Mawson Lakes. Owner, Elizabeth Chiera (pictured) lives in Mawson Lakes, and with a lifetime of couture design in Adelaide's bridal fashion industry, she wanted a studio closer to home, so when a cottage a few streets away became vacant she moved her operations. Stepping into her studio is like stepping into a fairy gallery where dresses are on display in every room and delicate imported fabrics tumble from shelves, or lie casually over antique chairs. Recognised as one of Adelaide's leading bridal designers, Eliza French has displayed a collection at the Adelaide Fashion Festival for the last two years and recently was invited to submit a design for inspiration for the wedding dress for Meghan Markle to Prince Harry. "I feel really settled with my studio in Mawson Lakes. I walk to work and I look out over a green park and feel focussed and productive. Having my workshop close by means I can attend fittings in the evening and be flexible and relaxed with my time." "I've been working on a wedding dress for the last 8 months that has 200m of fabric on the skirt and a bodice that is all hand beaded and supported by a handmade wooden corset. The

bride has had 10 fittings so far and when I hand her the dress to wear on her wedding day I will be giving her a little piece of me," said Elizabeth. As well as brides, Eliza French dresses the mothers and bridesmaids for a wedding. Every Eliza French outfit is meticulously hand crafted and each one is a piece of art. With the same attention to detail, Elizabeth creates dresses for special occasions, engagement parties, balls and red carpet events.

"I love every minute of my work," said Elizabeth. "To me work is not a stress, it's therapy, it makes me happy and fulfilled." "In the couture business, success in dress design is related to technical skill and experience, but the most important thing is knowing how to handle fabrics and turn threads into magic," she said. A cruising tale About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the Mediterranean aboard a luxury liner. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting in the dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters and busboys seemed very familiar with this lady and that she was having a nice time talking to everyone. I asked our waiter who she was, thinking she must be the owner of the line. He said he didn't know, only that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back. As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises." She replied, "Oh yes, that's true. It's much cheaper than a nursing home." "There will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a cruise ship. I've calculated that the average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked with reservations and I can get a long-term discount plus a senior discount price for $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for spending." There are just so many benefits . . . 1. An extra $5 in tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help me and they will treat me like a customer, not a patient. 2. I can have as many as 10 meals a day in the restaurant; or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week). 3. The liner has as many as 3 swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers. 4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo. 5. There's entertainment every night and a selection to choose from. 6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days. 7. TV broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience. 8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them. 9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the ship, the company will upgrade you, and the doctor will visit you every day in your suite. 10. And the best bit! When you die, they just dump you over the side at no charge. So want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Darwin, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? There will be a ship waiting for you. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.

Developing Sensors Wearable devices are now used for a wide range of healthcare observations. One of the most important elements in data collection is the sensor. A researcher in the School of Engineering at the University of South Australia Mawson Lakes campus, Professor Jun Ma, is undertaking research to test the most effective material to detect and measure force, movement, pulses and other signals from internal and external surfaces. Professor Ma and his team have used advanced fabrication processes consisting of nano-materials such as polynanotubes and graphene, which is a lightweight layer of carbon, to create a highly sensitive device.

This sensor can be attached onto the human skin and is able to measure and monitor various human outputs and transfer them as electrical signals. Professor Ma said the sensor technology can be used for numerous applications such as robotic, industrial and biomedical uses.

" I would like to see the sensors make positive impacts to the health industry. One example is that it can assist the elderly who are vulnerable to hazardous incidents. The sensor can detect if the wearer has suffered an injury and transmit an alert to the appropriate authority." The tiny device has enormous medical potential and ongoing studies are aiming to improve the device's flexibility, stretchability and durability. – Duy Dang

Salisbury Secret Garden is coming to Mawson Lakes The Salisbury Secret Garden is certainly one of Council's most successful events. Every year more and more people attend this showcase of great entertainment, food and music.

Caring for our waterways In the 1970s City of Salisbury committed to minimise pollution to the Barker Inlet by construction of over 30 wetlands. This changed the way in which Council managed waterways, including Dry Creek.

I'm pleased to announce that this year 2 fantastic and FREE shows will be held right here in Mawson Lakes at the Mawson Centre.

Dry Creek is being re-developed as a 'natural watercourse', using reeds and grasses to stabilise the waterway. This slows the water down, creating habitat, and filtering the silt and rubbish to ensure it does not end up in the Barker Inlet.

On the 25th February we have Salisbury Poetry Slam and I invite all our budding poets to come along. You can compete for prize money or just be entertained by the talented contestants and MC Nigel Ford.

Sometimes rubbish and silt builds up along Dry Creek and other Council waterways.

Then on the 3rd Of March we have NINJA MANGA. This is a wonderful show, enjoyed by both Children, and adults alike! The very funny and talented Jarrod Hoare, will have you laughing along as he transforms his silly stories into Manga Artwork. We are so lucky to have Jarrod with us for another year so don't miss out and if you come in a costume you may even get a FREE GIFT!

Recently rubbish and silt was removed just below The Strand in Mawson Lakes, while maintaining the reed bed base underneath. This ensures its natural growth continues. The next phase of managing the waterway includes moving downstream over summer.

And don't forget to look out for the Mawson Centre's April school holiday program. I am told that the movie events will be fantastic again this holidays and tickets are so well priced they sell out in no time. Gillian Aldridge Mayor of the City of Salisbury E-mail GAldridge@salisbury.sa.gov.au Phone 08 8406 8262 Mobile 0411 703 706

Our Watercourse Management Plan funds the ongoing silt removal and rehabilitation of these areas.

We ask residents to be patient and work with us by keeping diligent in disposal of rubbish, as well as getting involved in local groups such as Friends of Pledger Wetlands, or Friends of Dry Creek. This will ensure that Dry Creek will continue to be a wonderful asset for us all. Dry Needling Dry needling is an increasingly popular technique used to treat a variety of conditions. The treatment involves the use of fine solid needles inserted into areas to improve function and reduce pain. It is similar to acupuncture however treatment varies in number of needles used and time needles are left in place. Dry needling often targets trigger points which are 'hyperirritable" points in muscle. Treatments of these points has been shown to result in a reaction from the central nervous system, allowing the muscle to relax and producing pain relief. This in turn allows thorough assessment and treatment of the mechanical cause. Dry Needling is often used in conjunction with other treatments such as stretching, strengthening, footwear and orthoses. Conditions which are known to respond well to dry needling include, but are not limited to; heel pain, shin splints, muscle tightness and imbalance, and forefoot pain. At Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic, we generally suggest three appointments over two weeks to determine whether or not Dry Needling would benefit you. We believe this is enough time to determine if your body is responding to the treatment in such a way that it would be of continued benefit.

Balancing Act by Marijana Tadic Everywhere we go in Mawson Lakes we are fortunate to have quality public art that tells the story of our community and reflects who we are, where we have come from and what we value. Public art in Mawson Lakes may be a picturesque pool in Mobara Park with reclining wooden seats that says our community values nature and spaces for quiet reflection, or it may be a fence mural such as the one at Mawson Lakes School that portrays life in Dry Creek, or colourful mosaics tucked away in a secluded courtyard in Innovation House that celebrates scientific advances. In the book Public Art in Mawson Lakes published by Mawson Lakes Living you can read about many of the objects of public art to be found in Mawson Lakes. The book is available online at www. mawsonlakesliving.com or you can organise your own print version. Balancing Act located on the Mawson Lakes Boulevard is a well-recognised feature of outdoor art. It is located in the Japanese styled grounds of Mobara Park. The sculpture was installed in 2004 at the entrance to the Garden of Blossoms where rows of ornamental pear trees create a veil that opens up as you walk further into the park. One of the most beautiful elements of this artwork is the way the changing colours of the leaves accentuate the changing seasons.

PUBLIC ART in Mawson Lakes

According to the artist, Marijana Tadic, the three concrete spheres symbolise a balance between our inner needs, such as tranquillity and comfort, versus material abundance and economic progress. The work makes references to North and South as two different hemispheres, and East and West as two cultures that have evolved from different traditions but share similar values, aspirations and design principles. The spheres are made from pre-cast polished concrete (pictured above) with computerised sensor-activated lighting that shines as a blue light at night. The work is inspired by geometric simplicity that shares the serenity and clarity characteristics of traditional Japanese architecture. The sculptures are placed near the gentle curved mounds of Mobara Park, designed to evoke a sense of movement or rolling effect. Ed

Kids Page: Freya the jewellery maker At 12 years old Freya Gabriel is one of the youngest jewellery makers in Adelaide. She was introduced to jewellery making by her mother's art group and when they decided two years ago to discontinue jewellery making, the group gave Freya all the beads they had, so she decided to use them and create her own pieces. Since then, Freya has managed to create a niche for herself, selling her wares on Facebook and at markets. "I have started creating other jewellery pieces but making earrings remains my favourite. It gives me a sense of pride when I see others wearing my creations and loving them. I have got a lot of recognition through word-of-mouth advertising, which is extremely encouraging," says the Mawson Lakes Primary School student. Freya's mother Coralie James is also an artist, and Freya frequently collaborates with her. "I use pieces of her artwork to make pendants. I love art that has a story to tell and is different from others available in the market," she adds.

The little artist donates some of her income from the jewellery sale to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. "I am a Type 1 insulin dependent diabetic and I donate to aid the research for a cure," says Freya. - Gayatri Nair To purchase contact: facebook.com/FreyasJewellery

Dogs' Names

by Nigella

Bella is the most popular name for a dog, if you analyse the council records across Adelaide. Molly is close behind, so mummy and I went walking to find out some favourite dog names in Mawson Lakes. I'm not surprised to hear that humans are giving their dogs human names because they see their four-legged friends as fully fledged members of their families.

Benji has just come to live in Trinity Green and he loves his green waterside walks

Our neighbour, Janelle Anderson, said her dog, Norman Edward, a rescued corgi cross, is her fur baby. "We gave him a human name because he's part of the family." In March Janelle is expecting twins so she calls Norman their "first baby" and describes him as the first child in the family. It seems that Molly and Bella are favourite names for small dogs, anything that's fluffy and very cute. Gillian Aldridge has two little poodles one of which is Bella. "It's Italian for beautiful and she is beautiful and one of our family," Gillian told us when her dogs and I were playing together.

Poodle Bella lives in The Bridges

Jagger is my handsome, alert Jack Russell friend

Corgi cross Norman Edward is expecting twins in the family

For boys we found that Charlie is popular, also Harry, replacing descriptive names such as Blackie and Spot. Our friend in the park said,"You can't choose your family but you can choose your pet. When I come home Harry is always pleased to see me and it lifts my day, so he is the most important thing in my life." According to the council records other top names are Ruby, Coco, Lucy, Oscar, Missy, Simba and Milo, but here's what we found in Mawson Lakes. 28

Scott grew up in Hong Kong so he understands Chinese and English Molly is a gentle maltese/poodle cross

2. Long vehicles can use two lanes to make a turn if necessary and safe to do so. Car A should wait behind the truck until it has driven through, don't pull-up alongside it.

3. If you're waiting to turn left at a roundabout and a cyclist pulls up alongside you, you need to wait for the cyclist to move before making the turn, regardless of who got there first.

4. You should indicate left whenever you're exiting a roundabout. Car B should have the right blinker flashing as you enter, then switch to your left before you leave. Car A has no need to indicate on approach, but should signal left before exit.
