Nigella and I are starting the New Year at a new address too. Still in Mawson Lakes! We have moved to a single-story cottage overlooking the Pledger Wetlands (pictured). The natural environment here is delightful and I wake up each morning as the sun rises over the ponds and swaying reeds and am eager to go. In the evenings I listen to the amorous overtures of the frogs during the mating season and hear what the boys are calling - all very flattering, Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. The Pledger Wetlands track runs along the wooded railway line. It's a dream place for a jogger or walker. On the weekends families come past riding their bicycles; and it’s just perfect for walking the dog. Nigella has something to say about her new digs too. See page 28. Look out for us along the way and wave hello.

Community Conversations

have your say...

What happened to manners? Good manners are on the decline, so I was interested to read a wellbeing study suggesting that traditional politeness and respect are losing their value. This applies to the way we interact with each other, get back to calls, the way parents speak to their children and the way shop attendants speak to their customers. The study suggested that people are in a big hurry so there is intolerance; people expect their needs to be satisfied NOW and if not they get angry. Social media allows people to make rude comments with no regard to other's feelings. Add to this job stress, family breakdown, soft penalties for criminals, rising costs, and traffic congestion and people are annoyed and more aggressive. On the positive side, the study says that family life and friendships and a feeling of being part of a community can be a calming effect. MLL provides this sense of community in a very positive way. It may explain why Mawson Lakes is such a nice place to live. I urge all residents to keep smiling at each other, be patient and talk to each other respectfully. - Barry Tyndall Nuisance calls It was after 10pm at night when the phone rang and woke me. An emergency? No, it was another automated phone advertising message - the 16th that day. When I went to my messagebank the next day there was a deluge of 22 automated advertising messages. I rang Telstra to be told that phone numbers are taken from the digital white pages and that messages are generated overseas so they bypass the Australian laws for unsolicited calls. Telstra removed my number from the white pages and put up a screen to stop such calls. If this is happening to you call Telstra. - Liam Gunde

Happy reader I come from Pooraka each month to pick up Mawson Lakes Living. I love the magazine and everything in it. I like to do the puzzles and while here I use lots of the services that I read about in its pages. It’s such a readable magazine with lots of useful information. Mawson Lakes is really lucky to have a magazine of this quality. Meg Meg Bennett with MLL designer Nicole Aspinall

Service SA costs Nakisha’s comment about closure of Service SA (MLL/Nov) is all about government cost cutting; buggar the poor people. A government report on the cost of running Service SA shows it costs $17 to deliver a service in person (for example at the Modbury and Prospect centres); $6 on the phone; and only 40c online. Pity the customers who cannot find anyone to talk to, and the great loss of jobs from a government who is telling us they are trying to provide better service to the people and to create jobs. - Mary Jafarie Clean Up Mawson Lakes The next Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 3 March. We will be meeting at 8:45am for coffee and a 9am start, cleaning nearby Mobara Park and all through the suburb. Please advise of any areas of concern that we can tackle on the day. We provide tongs, high-vis vests and rubbish bags. This is a family friendly event so come along with kids, dogs etc! RSVP to beau.brug@live.com.au - Beau Brug

Food crisis motivates research The prediction that the world’s population is growing faster than our ability to produce food, is a key motivator that drives Professor Stanley Miklavcic, a research mathematician at the Mawson Lakes campus.*

In another direction, his team is looking at what happens in plants that grow in salty soils to give greater insight into how a plant reacts to salt, so that plant scientists will know what to look for when breeding for more salt tolerant varieties.

The world’s population sits at 7.6 billion, but is growing rapidly. By 2050 global population will exceed 9.8 billion, with most of the growth taking place in developing countries. Professor Miklavcic says a crisis is looming. "We need to double food production to keep up with world population growth. Added to this we have the adverse effects of drier weather patterns, the urbanisation of arable land and soil salinity, which make it challenging to increase farm production."

"The looming food crisis is driving change," said Professor Miklavcic. "Researchers around the world are testing new ideas to increase food production, such as developing desalination projects to pipe water inland for irrigation; crossing salt tolerant grasses with modern wheat varieties (wheat is also a grass); and breeding cereal plants that can tolerate salt water straight from the sea."

"In our research centre at Mawson Lakes, we monitor and model how environmental factors affect crop yield, particularly for wheat and barley. Using modern day remote sensing technologies combined with state of the art computational methods, we analyse in-field images to determine crop height, density, and wheat ear production, which all factor into yield." "This has been a terrible year for farmers. In our field trial we see the result of this season’s poor rainfall: spindly crops with low yield," he said.

"Given changing conditions, it is even more important that farmers know more about their field and its environment, so that they can adapt quickly. Modern remote sensing technologies such as drones are available, but need sophisticated methods of analysis. That’s where our research centre is making a valuable contribution," said the professor. * Professor Miklavcic is the Director of the Phenomics and Bioinformatics Research Centre in the School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences at UniSA. His research is funded by the Australian Research Council, the Grains Research and Development Corporation and the South Australian State Government. Ed

MEET OUR NEW ELECTED COUNCIL MEMBER MLL interviewed Lisa Braun (pictured), a newly elected representative for Mawson Lakes on Salisbury Council. Why did you become a councillor? I've lived in the Salisbury area for 20 years, the past 3 in Mawson Lakes, so I feel in touch with local people and I hear their concerns and want to represent their interests. I see the good work that Council does and I want to be part of positive progress. I want to build a community with jobs and opportunities for my children and for other families. How much time does a councillor give to community affairs? There are 3 main 8

commitments. One is council meetings 6 nights a month, then serving on subcommittees, and there are lots of events to attend. What are your other activities? I work full time as a business analyst at the Australian Taxation Office and I have 2 children aged 14 and 16 who attend Endeavour College. I'm a volunteer for Backpacks 4 SA Kids. In my free time I enjoy watching and reading science fiction. What are some of the issues you want to tackle? Illegal dumping, street cleaning and

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 139 - January 2019

verge maintenance. I want to make sure that people get value for their rates and I think that there needs to be better communication to residents so they know the services that Council provides and the regulations that govern local living. How would you describe yourself? Outgoing, energetic, motivated, peopleoriented, resilient. How can people contact you about local issues and to invite you to events? 0413 046 069 or email LBraun@salisbury.sa.gov.au

Healthy feet are vital for activity and wellbeing. Children’s feet are still growing and they have a lifetime of running, jumping, climbing, playing and walking ahead of them. School shoes are important as children spend all day in them. They need to provide support, cushioning , comfort and foot protection. Here are some hints for finding a suitable school shoe for your child: Ensure the shoe fits well. It is important to measure size while standing and check width and length of both feet. Shoes should be around 1cm longer than longest toe . They should not be bought too large to grow in to. They need to fit well now. School shoes should preferably be enclosed with a non slip sole, and have laces or a buckle to hold the shoe onto the foot. Check that the shoes fit regularly. Children grow, and it is important that their toes don’t hit the front of the shoe. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s feet or they are experiencing foot or leg pain call 8262 9999 for an assessment.

Beautiful Garden Award Vertical Garden A vertical garden in a tiny front yard is a captivating feature at the doorway of Evelyn and Cesar's home at 88 Harvey Circuit that has won this month’s Beautiful Garden Award. The green wall is full of succulents with varieties of echeveria, soft grey cotyledons and sedum jellybeans, josling for space at different levels. Beyond the green wall is a very small garden of only 6 square metres, but it is brimming with colour where succulents and natives happily intertwine in a carpet of fiery lotus, against a backdrop of tall kangaroo paws. Evelyn is an architect and she applies the same principals to her garden as she does to her building designs." Colour, texture, light and shadows are important considerations in everything I design and I look for perspective, not symmetry, but balance," she said. "I keep track of my garden’s growth and take photographs to record progress, and determine what works and what doesn’t." What works well for us are easy-care succulents wrapped around features of stones and logs. The hardy succulents provide a pallet of colour and shapes, against sundrenched white walls that face the street. "My husband Cesar, built the framework for my green wall and he does all the formwork, lighting and irrigation. (see ad on page 25). My neighbours give me cuttings which I put in my baby plant nursery and in return I love to share my plants," said Evelyn. Ed

New Book: My Friend Andy A lonely little boy who finds friendship with a green frog is the story in Elizabeth Pullen’s first book, launched in the Mawson Lakes Library last month. Elizabeth said it's a simple 10-page book with big print for beginning readers and for her students who are learning English as a second language. "I mentor people of all abilities and stages of learning and I wanted a book that would reach out to everyone." Pam Fox was commissioned to illustrate the story. This is her first book too and her beautiful illustrations of a little boy in blue and a human-like frog bring the tale to life. "I used my grandson as my model and I asked him to pose in lots of ways with a variety of expressions," she said. The book is available at the Mawson Lakes Library. Youth Talks: 3 tips to overcome procrastination by Preet There are a lot of things I’m good at - things like English and Science and even tennis and riddles. Unfortunately, time management is not one them. I am one of those people who puts off things to the last minute. This is called procrastination. One of the main reasons is because of distractions. Say you have an important arts project coming up at school. Instead of working on your project, you start watching one of your favourite shows, using the excuse that you can do it "later". People who do this so often that it becomes a part of their personality are called chronic procrastinators.

time will each take? By sorting your tasks in order of importance, you can see what needs to be done first. Save the TV, YouTube or social media as a reward for when the job is finished. 2) Break up large tasks into smaller ones. Let’s say you have to write an essay. Make a rough plan first then break the task into smaller parts. It doesn’t seem as scary and you can see where you’re going. 3) Make a start. I think the hardest part of any project is the start. I know I’ve put off a lot of tasks because I couldn’t be bothered to actually start. However, when you do sit down and start it’s easy to keep going as you build a type of momentum.

Don’t worry though, this is quite common and can be overcome if you put your mind to it. If you think you’re a procrastinator, here are a few tips:

Overall, try to be aware of how you spend your time. It’s going to help you a lot when you’re older if you can learn to manage time efficiently and make it a habit to sort priorities.

1) The first thing is to sort your priorities. When is each of your projects due? Roughly how much

Preet is 13. She is going into Year 8 in 2019, her first year in high school.

Cool and top with icing or melted chocolate.

Walking the wetlands with Nigella We have moved to a new house along the Pledger Wetlands and I love it here. I still see my old friends and have made many new ones. My next door neighbour Cassie is a border collie and my new best friend. She comes over to my gate and calls, "Hey Nigella want to come out and play ball?" She crouches down in the grass in that sheep dog way, just waiting for a command, then with acrobatic precision she leaps high into the air and catches the ball. She's so fast. Lots of my friends come walking along the wetlands trail which is perfect for dogs because it's so safe and open, with trees everywhere flavoured with delicious doggie smells. There are clean-up bags, bins and a fresh water bowl outside my place and you can do a short walk, or a wonderful long loop around Mawson Lakes. Here’s what some of my friends say about walking the wetlands:

Lily "I'm a sociable girl and I love to read the p-mails along the track and chat with my doggie friends"

Cassie "Nigella is a great neighbour, she likes to play, and for a little dog she’s surprisingly fast and smart."

Bobby "I just like being friends with everyone."

Mischka Mischka is a Berneses Mountain Dog whose name means Little Bear. She communicates in both English and Russian. "I live in a small house so I love the wetland’s wide open spaces particularly on cold wintery mornings."

Pepe and Monty "We live just a street away from the wetlands and we like to drop in to Nigella’s place for a sitdown on her patio and a drink and talk when we walk the wetlands."

Nigella: "It's doggie corner at my place, and if we’re lucky someone has a doggie biscuit in their pocket and we all get a treat. Sam, Zac and I get very focussed when the treats come out!"
