Honour for Mayor Hard working and much-loved Salisbury mayor Gillian Aldridge has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Australia Day Awards for service to the community of Salisbury and to local government. The resident of Mawson Lakes at The Bridges who has been mayor for 10 years and a councillor for 20 years said her greatest achievements have been in helping Salisbury transform into a thriving city. Cartier diamonds for Meghan Markle Last month's story on the Cartier jewels in Canberra encouraged a group of girls from Mawson Lakes to hop on a plane to Canberra for a weekend away to see the diamonds. Wow, what a fabulous show, everything you said and more. Cost of an ambulance When my husband had a medical emergency I called 000 and an ambulance quickly arrived at our home in Mawson Lakes. My husband is OK now but when he received a bill for nearly $1000 for the ambulance ride he nearly dropped dead. In Queensland where we come from, ambulance services are free for emergencies. They are also free in Tasmania. - Abigail Kentish
Future of education A panel of distinguished women scientists spoke to us through the magazine (MLL/May) and emphasised the importance of STEM learning. Great reading. At other times I have read in MLL that the jobs of the future will be in technology, engineering, defence and space but I'm rather worried for my children’s education at the local school. Since 2000, Australia has fallen from a ranking of 4th in the world in reading to 16th. In maths we have dropped from 7th to 25th. In science from 4th to 14th. In SA our position is even worse. According to NAPLAN results, since 2008, SA results are the lowest in the country. Can the distinguished scientists tell us what's going on? - Jodie, worried mum.
Living in Mawson Lakes There were a lot of negative community conversations in the June issue of MLL. Must be the cold weather because Mawson Lakes with its picturesque lakes, walking trails, shopping, dining, schools, sprawling university, diverse and affordable choice of both rental and owner-occupier accommodation and a public transport hub must surely still be one of the safest and most convenient and affordable suburbs to live in. - Greg Sharp
ATMs removed The ATM at the National Bank of Australia Mawson Lakes near Target has been removed and will not be replaced. I have lodged a complaint and I would urge every NAB customer to do the same. I have emphasised that the Mawson Lakes community is not only residential but has a large university and business population. Community Conversations continued from page 4... Thanks for the Christmas lights Our family was dining out with friends visiting from the USA. When it came time to pay the bill the cafe owner told us that it had already been paid by another customer from Mawson Lakes who said they enjoyed our Christmas lights show so much that they paid for our dinner as a thank you for all the joy the show brings to people. We were quite touched by such a generous gesture, and we want to send a heartfelt thanks to the lovely person who paid for our meal. It will remain a very special memory for our family and our visitors from the USA. - Geoffrey and Lindy, Hamilton Christmas Lights. We need toilets in high-use areas We were at Glenelg on the weekend and they have an excellent public toilet called "Exeloo". www.exeloo.com It closed the door, self flushed and even played music whilst being on a loo! Could we put some of these toilets around Mawson Lakes in high-use areas? My wife was doing her usual big walk around Mawson Lakes the other day and she was absolutely busting for a loo and not one to be seen. - Adam Glass Gates to nowhere Another wet day where students, parents and general members of the community had to cope with the safety risks and disruption caused by a closed and flooded footbridge between the two Mawson Lakes School sites. Closed during lunch and the afternoon end-of-school rush, it was the second time the flooding/closure had occurred in a month. Established some distance from the creek are ineffective gates which currently do not even work. These gates installed by Council last year are a joke and serve no real purpose. The school has to manually put a barrier up at the moment. Salisbury Council says it is an Education Department responsibility to upgrade the school's footbridge. It is time for all stakeholders to come together and find a real and effective solution. Only an upgraded footbridge will fully and effectively resolve the safety issues and disruption caused by the current flood-prone footbridge. - Greg Weller 6

Litter blight I am a long time resident of Mawson Lakes and I walk around my suburb and thoroughly enjoy the many lovely parks, lakes and public buildings, but something is souring my enjoyment - the amount of litter around Mawson Lakes and the parklands. I see lots of chip packets, bubble tea cups and various throw-away wrappings that suggest student litter. Can schools and parents help reduce wastage by encouraging environmentally friendly snacks and nude food.* - Robyn McGufficke *Ed: Nude food has minimal packaging. It is placed in reusable containers making a rubbish-free lunchbox. How drones are changing our world A laboratory full of drones is the research territory of Professor Anthony Finn. Some of his drones are smaller than a shoebox, while others are sophisticated vehicles weighing up to 15kg that cost $30,000 or more. Professor Finn is the Director of Defence and Systems at the University of South Australia at Mawson Lakes and his world-class engineering research in drone technology has applications in areas such as defence, space, agriculture, aviation, underwater, forestry and fishing. "Drones provide a richness of information through data collection that is changing the way we do business," he said. For example, in defence, drones are now part of military forces worldwide, used to detect targets, for combat missions and in surveillance. "Through a groundbreaking project in our laboratory we are using a neurological model based on how flies process images and the senses that enable them to judge light and movement. This insect vision can be applied to cameras that will be attached to drones." In agriculture, drones enable farmers to move from traditional farming practices to precision farming. Professor Finn and his team are working with the wine industry in South Australia to measure temperature (thermography) and wind (tomography) that affect crops. "We can precisely indicate where there is a need for additional irrigation on a microscale, rather than watering the whole field.

Hyperspectral imaging technology lets farmers see beyond the naked eye, and enables them to be proactive rather than reactive about their crops." Prof Finn said that drones extend the reach of an individual and allow humans to get into difficult and dangerous places. "Using specialised cameras, drones can peer deep into forests, move livestock across unreachable terrain, scare away birds, and operate in disaster areas." But it’s not all military, industrial or commercial. Imagine a fisherman with a handy drone. Instead of jumping in his boat to follow the fish he hopes he'll find, he picks up his drone, locates the fish with smart aerial sensors then tells the drone where to drop his line! Ed

Changing face of accounting New technologies, greater mobility, augmented intelligence and globalisation have led to evolving client demands and a shifting economy which are changing the face of traditional accounting firms, according to a survey conducted by Chartered Accountant Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ). Cloud based accounting has made record keeping simple and many business owners no longer walk into an accountant's office with a shoebox full of envelopes each year at tax time. By automating basic manual tasks clients can use technology like Xero or MYOB to do much of the heavy lifting themselves. The survey found that clients want their accountants to do more than plug numbers into a program. They want professionals to take the numbers and tell the client how they can add more value. For example, due to rising electricity costs, businesses are looking for proactive advice on how to reduce such costs. They want the accountant to analyse client power usage and then go back to the client with ideas on how to reduce the costs. Clients want to take the strategic decision out of the hands of the solar providers and put it into the hands of a trusted adviser who can do the research and do the analytics. Renee Feltrin from CA ANZ, said that along with the rest of the world, the accounting profession is facing significant change as a result of diversity and disruption. "Activities centred on bookkeeping, tax and audit have been overtaken by other service lines and the profession of the future is about consulting and advisory services". She describes modern day accountants as "sense makers, growth accelerators and critical thinkers for business." "The profession is no longer looking at employing accounting and commerce graduates. Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
Bunions Bunions are bony bumps that stick out the side of the foot, most commonly at the base of the big toe. They are often painful when walking and can rub on shoes. People often report pain and are bothered by the appearance of their bunions. Contrary to popular belief, bunions are not caused by ill-fitting shoes. Tight shoes may cause pain and make bunions worse, however, shoes are not the primary cause. The most common cause is faulty foot mechanics which is inherited, so bunion deformities often run in families. There are many treatments available to improve comfort and mobility such as appropriate width and depth footwear, orthoses to address foot mechanics, and padding and taping to reduce local pressure. Whilst these treatments are often effective in improving comfort they are unlikely to straighten the toe. If conservative measures are insufficient then a surgeon may be required. Surgery would be used to improve toe alignment. There are a variety of surgical procedures used depending on age, activity level and severity of the problem.

Mawson Lakes hosts SA radio controlled sailing titles The South Australian titles for radio controlled yachts were held in excellent racing conditions on Sir Douglas Mawson Lake last month. It was the first time the state titles have been held here and it attracted a fleet of 18 entries - 4 sailors from Melbourne, 4 sailors from Portland Victoria, 1 sailor from Patawalonga SA and 9 sailors from Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club (MLMYC). The standout performer was the current RC Laser International Champion of Nations, Scott Fleming from Melbourne who won 10 of the 16 races. He showed good boat speed and picked lots of wind shifts as he tacked up and down along the southern wall of the lake.
He was followed by Scott Mitchell from the Patawalonga in second place and by Adrian Heard from MLMYC in third place. Overall, four MLMYC sailors finished in the top 10 places. At the presentation ceremony, the visiting sailors lauded the standard of facilities at Mawson Lakes and the standard of event organisation by MLMYC. This augers well for November when MLMYC will be hosting the National RC Laser Series at Mawson Lakes from Friday 28th September to Monday 1st October. More than 40 sailors will be attending from all over Australia and New Zealand. Mawson Lakes residents are encouraged to come along and watch the racing on that long weekend. - Adrian Heard

Heart Attack/Stroke or Shopping Centre article? A couple’s journey through Stroke When Kerrie-Anne Teo and Nathan Nguyen met at a party in 2009, they had no idea that their life story together would be one of love and sacrifices. The couple eloped and got married in Paris in 2015, and a couple of years later their world came crumbling down when Nathan had a stroke. Nathan worked as an engineer in the defence force, when last year, at the age of 29, he was assisting with the lift of a 64kg aircraft camera, when it slipped and hit him on the right side of his head and neck. At the time he did not display any symptoms and was rushed to a local hospital. He later presented with slurred speech and left-sided weakness - especially facial droop. Back home while sleeping he woke up suddenly, without movement on his left side. Kerrie-Anne immediately called an ambulance that took Nathan to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he underwent a CT scan that indicated he had suffered a severe stroke due to a blood clot from the neck trauma. He was left-side hemiplegic. Nathan underwent a craniectomy
which removed a sizable portion of his right-side skull to relieve pressure on his swelling brain. Since then he has undergone multiple surgeries. KerrieAnne said that Nathan’s resilience has been her biggest inspiration.
Nathan is an engineer in the Royal Australian Air Force recovering from a stroke that left him a hemiplegic with paralysis of one side of his body.
"I have never heard him complain - even when they were taking stitches out of his head without anaesthesia. My frustrations and challenges pale in comparison to his. Having that understanding and love for Nathan drives me to pursue the best care and rehab for him," says Kerrie who lives with Nathan in Mawson Lakes. - Gayatri Nair

Film Review Mystery Road Good drama is hard to find; Australian drama even harder, so when an original narrative such as Mystery Road comes along I applaud it and recommend it. You can watch it on ABC iView in 6 parts. Definitely binge TV; I couldn’t put it down.

Set on a remote cattle station in the Kimberly in WA, the story centres around 2 young men who go missing, but the real attraction of the movie lies in the brilliant actors who carry the story - multipleaward-winning actor Judy Davis as the local police officer, Aboriginal man Aaron Pedersen as the disgruntled detective, Colin Friels as the landowner and Ernie Dingo as the town’s powerbroker. It’s a winning combination of talent that is raw and gritty. Simmering community relations in small towns, social discord, corruption and the secrets held in history that haunt all Australians whatever their colour, reveal complex cultural tensions that are totally believable. The film’s strong ethical line assures us that good will prevail; and it does, with a twist. The finely crafted film is played out against an endlessly fascinating outback landscape. Time is spent building visual pictures in widescreen glory of red cliffs, swollen baobab trees, dusty stockyards, choking dust, and moody skies. For me, the Australian landscape with its changing hues had just as large a role to play as any cast member and it performs perfectly. This deftly made Australian thriller starts off slowly but offers a different take on the mystery genre, far removed from Hollywood. - Linda Vining

People Profile: Humour through art "Having a sense of humour makes life more bearable. That’s the mantra I fervently follow," says Jean Bates, artist and resident of Mawson Lakes. Given the motto, it is no surprise that humour pervades all aspects of her life, and her entry in this year’s Watershed Art Show is delightfully humorous. The art piece titled 'Happy Hour' (opposite) pays tribute to the quintessential Australian culture of friends and family gathering around a watering hole or billabong to beat the woes of everyday life and to enjoy camaraderie. "In my painting you can see young kangaroos, frogs, and even ladybugs coming together for Happy Hour in a wetland area in Mawson Lakes," explains Jean.

The former recruitment consultant teaches art to residents at a Mawson Lakes aged care home. "My pupils are in their 70s through to 90s and some of them are in wheelchairs with limited mobility. To see them create beautiful art and feel proud of their achievements is extremely rewarding and therapeutic."

Recipe: Peppermint Slice Who doesn’t love peppermint? This all-time favourite is easy to make in 4 steps, and irresistible to eat. Leave the peppermint layer white or colour it green for a minty suggestion. Use pure icing sugar as this has better setting qualities than icing sugar mixture, and crack up a block of dark or milk chocolate for the topping, or even easier, use chocolate melts. Ed Base 1 1/2 cups (200g) self raising flour 1 cup coconut ½ cup brown sugar 185g unsalted butter, melted Peppermint Centre 375g pure icing sugar 60g copha or coconut oil 3-4 tablespoons milk 4 teaspoons peppermint essence few drops of green food colouring (optional) Topping 200g chocolate, melted 3 teaspoons vegetable oil
Steps 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a slice pan with baking paper. 2. Add melted butter to flour, coconut and brown sugar to form a crumbly mix and press firmly into the base of the pan and smooth flat with a spoon. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly browned. 3. Prepare the peppermint layer while the base is cooking by melting the copha in the microwave. Add icing sugar and milk, peppermint essence and green colouring. Mix until the consistency of thickened cream. If too thick add a little more milk. Spread the mix over the top of the warm base. Cool on the benchtop, then place in the fridge to set for an hour or so. 4. Melt chocolate and oil in the microwave stirring every 30 seconds to avoid burning. Spread over peppermint layer and cool in fridge. Use a hot knife to cut into slices. For other easy to make recipes check out the Mawson Lakes Living Anniversary Cookbook. Beautiful Garden Award Yucca entrance An arresting avenue of yuccas line the entrance to the house at 14 Adeline Street in The Bridges presenting a simple but creative garden that beautifies the streetscape. As I approached on a sunny winter’s day the elegant, single storey home was sparkling in the sunlight highlighted by a palette of contrasting colours that came from manicured grass, a concrete cream path lined with glistening white pebbles and two rows of yuccas in architectural composition.
Yuccas are proud evergreen plants that can be pruned into eye-catching accents.
Yuccas are hardy and easy to grow needing little water and loving lots of sun, but often they are seen as unattractive uncultivated clumps, when, with a little care, they can make stunning outdoor and indoor accent plants. Joe Stillitano, pictured, who has pruned his Yuccas into beautiful ornamental shapes said it's easy to do. "I strip the straplike leaves from the trunk by pulling them off with my hands whenever a leaf starts to turn downwards and I keep the trunks clean by removing unwanted offshoots that grow from the base and sides. I never need to water because they are desert plants and basically they take care of themselves."

Canine Copying - Cloning dogs

When mummy read in the newspaper that actress Barbra Streisand had cloned her pet dog and got two identical puppies, she looked at me and smooched "You’re so precious Nigella I'd like to clone you too and have you forever," so she rang the vet to see if it could happen. But she sure did get a fright when told the cost $100,000. She’s rethinking the idea! Still, love is hard to find, and when you do find it you want to keep it for as long as possible. Barbra Streisand travelled with her cherished dog Samantha nearly everywhere (just like mummy and me). Her two new cloned puppies look like deceased Samantha, and they are so similar to each other that Streisand had to put a red collar on one and a purple collar on the other so she could tell them apart. In fact, it was because of the collar colours that she named her twin puppies — Miss Scarlett and Miss Violet. Cloning dogs is a relatively new and intricate science and producing genetic replicas is the pet frontier in the USA and Korea where pet parents are willing to spend big money on reproductive technology to recreate their cherished family member. Here’s how its done: Cells are taken from the donor dog. In the lab the cells that will contain the dog’s DNA are given treatment to stimulate growth.

The resulting embryos are implanted into surrogate dogs who carry the puppies to birth. It takes about 2 months for a puppy to be born. The vet can undertake the collection of cells or you can buy a kit and do it yourself. There’s lots of information on the internet. The cloned dog will most likely have the appearance, intelligence and temperament of the original, but, while scientists can clone the look of the dog, they can't clone the soul; that comes from its environment, interactions and its experiences.
Youth Talk: Lily goes stargazing
A crowd gathered at the planetarium at UniSA in May to help set the world record for the most people stargazing across multiple venues. I was there with my brother, and grandfather and our binoculars and cheerful spirits. After conversing with many enthusiastic UniSA volunteers and finding our opportune position, we trained our binoculars on the night sky. The weather did not appear to be on our side; the moon hid behind a veil of cloud, leaving Adelaide’s stargazers wondering whether they would be able to claim the record after all.

Suddenly, the crowd became a sea of pointing hands, and cheers filled the air as the moon peeked out from behind the cloud, followed by a groan of disappointment as it hid away again. As luck would have it, just minutes before we were set to begin, the moon sailed into a clear patch of sky. Holding binoculars high for 10 minutes was no easy feat, however the arm ache was well worth it. I am proud to reveal that over 40,000 Australians have broken the Guinness World Record. It was an exceptional experience and I cannot thank the ABC and UniSA enough for the opportunity to make history. By Lily Fae Schulz (15)
