Opulence and Natural Beauty We are surrounded by natural beauty in Mawson Lakes as the cover of this month's issue illustrates. This is the prize-winning painting of water reeds in the wetlands which was selected by MLL as the Editor's Choice Award at the 2018 Watershed Art Prize. If you have walked along the tracks behind the Watershed Cafe, as I have many times, you will have experienced this hypnotic scene when the tall grasses sway in the breeze. Read more about the painting and the artist on page 6. This is local beauty, but sometimes you have to go a long way to see outstanding beauty of a different kind.
By chance, my visit to the art gallery in Canberra coincided with the announcement in The Canberra Times that the National Gallery of Australia has seduced the hugely successful director of our Adelaide art gallery, Nick Mitzevich, to take up the position of Director from July. What a loss to SA to farewell this innovative man who over eight years has transformed the Art Gallery of SA into one of Australia’s most progressive cultural institutions. Wonder what he'll do in Canberra. Nigella enjoyed the road trip to Canberra and back, travelling home along the Great Ocean Road in wild, windy weather. We stayed in dog-friendly places across SA, Victoria, NSW and the ACT. She's got a bit to say about her adventures on page 24.

Handy Hankie My grandson’s birthday was coming up so I suggested I buy him a box of quality handkerchiefs. He looked aghast, "no thanks Gran" he said, "I don’t use hankies." I remember my dad whose hankie was indispensable. He used it to clean his glasses, dust his shoes, wear it as a head covering to keep the sun off his bald head, wipe moisture off a damp bench, wipe my sticky fingers and sometimes his oily hands if he was working in the garage. His handy hankie would wipe away sweat, blood, tears, and occasional get a blast from his nose. A 30 cm sq hankie acted as a useful measuring tool and he would pull it out for this too. I wonder how modern-day man can get by without a fresh hankie in his pocket every morning? Police inaction Suspicious behaviour caused me to contact police so I rang 131444 as instructed at neighbourhood watch meetings at ML. The response was: "You need to contact your local police station". I rang Salisbury police station about 4pm. The response was: "No-one is available to take your call. Ring 131 444." Is it any wonder we have lost faith in the police. JM Dirty BBQs We live in the Peppercorns and make use of the excellent park across the road from us. A group of people were using the BBQ on Friday at about midday and they left it in a filthy state. We are planning to have our daughter’s first birthday in that same park in August and seeing how it’s been left we will probably have to take over our own Weber. Who is responsible for cleaning the BBQ or does it just get handballed to the next group that want to use the facility? Adam Glass Raiding garbage bins An Asian man comes around our streets on Sunday night / Monday morning taking cans and bottles from recycle bins that have been put out for council collection. This activity is in breach of Council's WASTE MANAGEMENT BY-LAW which states a person must not remove, disburse or interfere with any waste that has been placed on a road or in a waste container for collection by the Council, its agents or contractors. However,

the dilemma is catching these people in the act and identifying them. We have spoken to this man in the past as we scheduled some early morning patrols and issued a warning but as he was on a bicycle, English was a second language and he did not have any ID, we could not take any action. The concern with privacy unfortunately is not a valid complaint as once in the public area, such as a bin on the roadside, it isn’t private anymore. I would advise anyone concerned with privacy to dispose of confidential items in other ways or use a shredder for documents. Council staff will follow up if a resident can provide regular locations and times the offence is committed. Trevor Mead Divided Reputation When applying for a position in the city, the interviewer asked me where I live. When I said Mawson Lakes he questioned, "do you live on the good side or the bad side?" I asked the difference. He described the undesirable side as along the highway, in the commercial centre and around the railway line "with cheap rental apartments, high crime rates and drug trafficking." I had no idea that Mawson Lakes has such a divided reputation. Marriam Halls, the good side! Moving out Your article in MLL/May outlined Council’s approval for developments in Mawson Lakes and discussed some of the problems we face. Years ago we bought a house in the centre of Mawson Lakes when Delphin/Lendlease was selling land and we loved living here, but we cannot take its problems any longer and are moving, driven out by hoons that keep us awake at night, overdevelopment in every direction, parking problems, dirty shabby shopping streets, and increasing crime rates where neighbours attack each other in their shared carpark. What was once a beautiful and safe suburb, now under council control, has become ugly and frightening. Kassy Anxiety over crime in ML Residents are reporting that persons are jumping their back fences to steal goods. This is causing distress and harm. Kylie Seifert continued on page 8

Watershed Art Prize Sandwiched between two of Adelaide’s busiest motorways is an extensive area of tranquility where artist Christopher Meadows drew inspiration for his award-winning painting that is featured on the cover of this month’s magazine. The painting was an entrant in the 2018 Watershed Art competition run by the City of Salisbury to encourage awareness of water as a precious resource. It won the Mawson Lakes Living Editor's Choice Award. On presenting the award, the MLL editor, Linda Vining, said "many times I have walked along the trails in the constructed wetland, past the bird hide, across the wooden bridges and deeply into native vegetation, almost losing myself in the high reeds that sway in the breeze and

Photograph those aggressive dogs On Saturday April 7th around 10am I was walking my dog along the path near Mawson Lakes Boulevard. A dog off lead on the opposite side of the road crossed the road, against its owners calls and proceeded to attack and bite my King Charles Cavalier around the neck. My dog was on a lead. By the time the owner reached her awful dog we were shocked, frightened and in disbelief. When the owner grabbed her dog, she walked off without an apology or even an enquiry about my dog. An aggressive dog like this should not be off the lead at any time. Fortunately I had the wherewithal to take a photo for evidence. Mary Weir Ed: This attack has been reported to Council with clear photographic evidence of the owner and the dog. If this happens to you, if you can, photograph of the dog and owner and send it to Council asap. We need to let irresponsible owners know that ML does not tolerate unruly dogs that interfere with other dogs. Keep your dog to yourself It seems that many dog owners do not know what 'responsible owner' means. My dog is old and has a few medical problems so when we go out walking we do not want other dogs bounding up to us with the owner’s comment, "my dog only wants to play." This is not responsible behaviour. Keep your dog to yourself and if it wants to play check first with the other owner. Sherell Gahl Lobbying for a Post Office I am continuing to advocate for a Post Office in Mawson Lakes. At the same time, to avoid affecting other nearby post offices, I suggest that the UniSA Mawson Lakes campus explore having a post office on their campus, to service their students, but also service Mawson Lakes as a suburb. This concept is done across the nation with many university campuses being home to a post office. In particular, there is one in the Adelaide City tucked into the University of Adelaide North Terrace campus and another at the other end of North Terrace at the University of South Australia City West campus. It’s not a huge ask that Australia Post seriously consider a post office in Mawson Lakes which has a residential population of over 13,000 people in addition to hundreds of businesses and 8

thousands of university students, many of whom are international students and use postal services frequently. If you agree and think Mawson Lakes needs a post office please support and sign the petition at:https://www.change.org/p/australiapost-we-want-a-post-office-in-mawson-lakes Blooming Bike I moved to Mawson Lakes from Darwin where I first got hooked on Pokemon. Now I spend a lot of my time walking around here with my iPhone looking for sites. It’s a fun and sophisticated game that's always changing so it keeps players mentally active, as well as fit walking from site to site. The game was originally for kids, but now it's even more popular with adults and we have a group in Mawson Lakes called Maw Raiders. The site outside the Mawson Lakes office has been upgraded from a STOP to a GYM called Blooming Bike Floral Art prettiest site in ML. Troy, Pokemon Player

Each morning, I drive past the Mawson Lakes Interchange and see dozens of pedestrians using the new shared use path that leads down to the train and bus stops. I am so proud of the work the City of Salisbury has done to help deliver this important project, making it easier for commuters to access the station and cross the bridge without using their cars. Cyclists have also been enjoying the shared path, which has been wonderful to see.
I want to remind readers of a fabulous column by Levels Ward Cr Steve White in the December edition of MLL, which introduced this exciting project. It was a well written piece that spoke about the path connecting the north and south banks of Dry Creek, from Waterbrook Court on the south with Ridley Street to the north. This creates a seamless network for our residents. We acknowledge that there is still work to be done on Elder Smith Road, and we are certainly working on this. But in the meantime, if you haven't already, I would strongly urge you to take a walk or ride along the shared path to see how great this piece of infrastructure truly is. My April article reported on cycle and pedestrian give way signs that Council has put up along major intersections on the Dry Creek trail. The SA legislation allowing cycling on footpaths allows for cycling bans on busy pedestrian footpaths. As a result The Promenade cafĂŠ strip now has No Cycling signs along its length.
Cycling is still allowed along the lake front but must be done so with care for pedestrians. I have asked for No Cycling signs to be placed on the University Parade footpath as it is a major pedestrian crossing point between the Mawson Centre shops. If you have any other footpaths on which cycling bans are essential let me know. Immersion into a world of glamour and style
Three hundred exquisite pieces of jewellery on loan from royal collections, Hollywood stars and international celebrities are on display at the National Gallery of Australia until the end of July, in the Cartier Exhibition. Exquisite pieces ranging from necklaces, tiaras, brooches, jewelled makeup compacts and timekeeping pieces offer a fascinating look at the height of opulence. The collection is described as "the most outstanding collection of important jewels Australia has ever seen, and is unlikely to see again." Like you, I've seen these sparkling pieces in pictures, worn by royalty, in the movies and in paintings, but there’s nothing like seeing diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls up close in creative formation, and reading the story behind who wore them, what was happening in society and fashion at that time and where the jewels are now. Jewellery worn by Elizabeth Taylor, Princes Grace of Monaco, Australian opera legend Dame Nellie Melba, Cary Grant, and Muhammad Ali are all mounted in specially created LED-lit, mirrored, high-security display cases. The viewer passes through many different styles and eras ranging from extravagant Oriental and Indian pieces to the more understated, but no less alluring. I was interested to see the royal collection with items personally lent by Queen Elizabeth such as the "Halo Tiara" worn by Kate Middleton at her 2011 wedding. 10

The amazing "Tutti Frutti" necklace owned by Edwina Mountbatten from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has never been lent before. Helping Hand: aged care in Mawson Lakes It’s easy to go past Helping Hand and not realise it is there or what it does. Located on The Strand off Mawson Lakes Boulevard, residential aged care facility Helping Hand’s inconspicuous location hides the robust volunteering opportunities and numerous residential activities that occur inside. Helping Hand is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation, registered as a charity. Mawson Lakes is one of eight Helping Hand care homes across the state which was set up to provide accommodation for ageing and disabled people. The Mawson Lakes branch is 14 years old and home to 97 residents. Lifestyle Coordinator, Anna Martin says, "We have many activities for our residents who are divided into small groups based on a common interest or hobby, with compassionate volunteers at the helm. For example, Arts and Crafts is a fast favourite. Our residents' art pieces often find their way to the annual Gawler Arts Festival, and notch up top prizes!" To ensure the residents’ physical and mental well-being Helping Hand has incorporated light exercises and brain gym, doing puzzles, quizzes, and crosswords. Bingo nights are extremely

popular and residents who are unable to play on their own have volunteers helping them. Mawson Lakes resident Aileen Rowse, a volunteer with Helping Hand for four years, adds, "We have two therapy dogs come in every week, and that brings a great deal of joy to our residents." Anna says they are always looking for more volunteers. "If you are empathetic, have good conversation skills, and are strong enough to do this, give us a call or drop in, and we can work out the details."

Beautiful Garden Award Living sculpture in topiary garden Phuong grew up in Vietnam and her sculptural garden at 13 Elder Circuit reflects an Asian influence. Topiary is the ancient art of clipping shrubs and trees into ornamental shapes such as balls, pyramids, cones, tiers and tapering spirals. There are not many topiary gardens in Mawson Lakes so this one makes a delightful manicured addition to the streetscape. It's a small open garden with traditional features (shaped plants, rocks, pebbles) and a few fanciful touches. Look out for these. There are no fences or flowers, instead a mix of geometric configurations in different stages of pruning and shaping that allow Phuong's artful expression. I always stop here on my walks and admire the creativity of this work in progress. Topiary is a slow process and plants need lots of pruning, good nutrition, regular watering and strong direct sunlight. Some plants well suited to this formation are conifers, ficus, buxus, lilly

Travelling with Dogs
by Nigella It's so good to find an increasing number of dog friendly places in Australia. On our travels to and from Canberra we stayed in some gorgeous places, one even had wallabies bouncing past our bushland retreat in the Otway Ranges in Victoria. I was ever-so-keen to run with the wallabies, but mummy put a halt to that idea pretty quickly!
Hospitality providers are beginning to realise that dogs Things that make a doggie feel welcome are part of the family and they go places with their crowd. Some owners charge a small fee for a dog-stay, others are happy to have the business and make no charge, and others charge a refundable deposit. Some even put out a welcome sign, but the best I experienced was when we opened the door to the bathroom in our log cabin in country Victoria and there on the shower curtain was a life-size image of Kevin, the black labrador who belonged to the owner. Wow, that’s dog friendly ... and living with a labrador in the house made me feel right at home.

I meet lots of nice people as we go places, perhaps two of the most intriguing were at Lorne along the Great Ocean Road where the voluptuous surf rescue girls shared their rock with me. Canberra was a treat with its manicured lawns, outdoor cafĂŠs, and handsome big buildings with smooth marble pavements, but not many good doggie smells there. By contrast, a walk in the parklands of Lake Burley Griffin, stopping in the Peace Park and the Beijing Garden with outdoor temples, arches and chinese statues, gave lots of new smells, sounds and things to check out.

I love travelling in the car. I just curl up in my bed on the back seat, then when we stop every couple of hours, Mummy opens the door and I eagerly jump out and a whole new world awaits exploration.
Youth Speaks: How intelligent are you? Have you ever wondered how smart you really are? Although there is no completely accurate way discovered yet to measure a human’s intelligence, we have come pretty close to it. You have probably heard of the "IQ", some of you may have even taken the test. IQ stands for "Intelligence Quotient" and you basically take a test that shows how intelligent you are. Lucky for some people, you are not tested on how well you solve math problems but rather what level of logic you can apply. This included solving visual problems such as the common "what comes next?". IQ is measured on a scale of numbers. 85-115 are the most common or "normal" scores while 145+ is considered "genius". While this may not be 100% accurate, there is no doubt there is

some level of truth behind it. For example, some familiar names, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking both shared the massive score of 160. Of course, this depends on the test you take. The most accepted and "official" IQ test in Australia is thought to be the Mensa test but there are plenty of free "unofficial" tests online if you’re looking for an estimate. So, what’s your IQ?
