Your Vital Vote A dramatic change in ward boundaries for the City of Salisbury threatens Mawson Lakes representation on Council. Our ward (Levels Ward) has been merged with West Ward. Two councillors will have to go. We don’t want to lose our Mawson Lakes elected representatives - Beau Brug and Steve White - who work hard for us in different ways, so they need your vote.
It will be a sad day for Mawson Lakes if we lose our elected representatives on Council. This month you will receive in your letterbox voting papers for the council elections. Voting for local government is not compulsory but I urge you to vote. As soon as your ballot paper hits your letterbox, grab a pen, vote for Beau and Steve and send it back immediately.
Councillor Beau Brug with the editor raising funds for the Cancer Council on Daffodil Day - see page 24
Your vote is vital. Mawson Lakes is big enough and strong enough to get these good guys elected, if you VOTE!

Editor "Living Legend" City of Salisbury
Festival of Lights postponed: At the last meeting of the Festival of Lights Working Party it was decided to postpone the event this year. Another big Indian festival is taking place on the same Saturday in Adelaide. Next year we will look at combining resources to bring an Indian Mela to the North. While interest was shown in the Mawson Lakes festival, by the closing date for registrations, the working party felt there was not enough financial support and local commitment to undertake such a big community event.

Scratching the carpet Dear Fred, I so enjoyed your column in Mawson Lakes Living/Aug. Thank goodness we cats are now represented by an intelligent and handsome chap such as yourself! I wonder if you could help me with a little problem I've been experiencing with my staff. I love to pick at the carpet and soft furnishings but my staff don't seem to like this. What do you suggest? Spot. Reply from Fred . . . Dear Spot, I have a similar problem with my staff. I assume they find the sound irritating so I suggest you pick away without offense while they are out. After all it's your house. Thanks for the question - Fred Cost to run a car When buying a car the price is just the start of the spending. Hidden costs can eat into your budget and you should be aware of running costs. The RAA reports the average cost of running a car is $218.58 per week, an increase of 23 cents compared with last year. This takes into account rising petrol prices and depreciation. Small cars are cheaper to run and at the micro end, the cheapest vehicle for 2018 is the Mitsubishi Mirage, costing $108 a week. The most expensive petrol car is the Mercedes E200 saloon, costing nearly $430 a week. Ed
Print size Am I getting older or is the printing in MLL getting smaller as each magazine comes out? I am down to a microscope now, but by Christmas I will have to scan it and enlarge it to be able to read it - Gordon Reynolds Editor: Print size hasn't changed. New glasses may help! I know it’s nice to hold a copy of the magazine in your hands, but it is also online at www.mawsonlakesliving.info where you can make it any size to suit. 4

Misleading figures Barrie Rogers from Parafield Airport should know better than to spread misleading information about Parafield Airport (MLL/Sept). His figure of 1300 employees includes almost 900 people employed in retail and hospitality - 2/3 more than the pilot training and aviation businesses employ. Parafield Airport management refuse to give a break down of those employed in Aviation but it would not be many. Similarly the figure of quarter of a million dollars into the local economy is questionable and he is misquoting the GSP Gross State Product figures which also includes other nonaero businesses located at the Airport. There should be closer scrutiny of this information as it is grossly misleading. - Stefan Johnson Lack of infrastructure for growth Parking misery at the Mawson Interchange is set to continue as the State Government has just announced that park’n’rides at Paradise and Golden Grove will be built BUT there’s nothing in the budget for a parking station at the Mawson Interchange. I live in Mawson Lakes but can never get a park at my local rail station so I take my car to town every day. It’s all very well for local and state government to promote economic development of the North, but they need to provide the infrastructure for growth - Trisha Nixon More toilets We like to stay local and that's why we love MLL. It keeps us in-the-know and it's handy when you need a tradesman - we just go to your trade guide. We walk a lot in Mawson Lakes and we would like to have more public toilets in high-use areas, at a distance from the town centre. What can the Mayor do about this? - Adam West with baby Georgia
Dirt tracks We live along the Pledger Wetlands in Mawson Lakes and we are always looking for spots to ride our BMX bikes and scooters. The nearest skate park is at Pooraka but this is too far away and across major roads so we are not allowed to go there. Would Council consider building a skate park in Mawson Lakes? There’s lots of spaces that would be suitable, or, if this is too much to ask could we have a dirt track somewhere along the Pledger Wetlands - just a few tracks and some dirt jumps. Something local would be really good where we could ride after school and on weekends and meet our mates and make new friends. Alex (12) and Sonny (11)
BEAUTIFUL GARDENS IN MAWSON LAKES
Ornamental Pear Trees The ornamental pear trees on the cover were photographed by Ann Rogers in Trinity Circuit. These beautiful blossoms can be seen all over Mawson Lakes in spring. Ornamental pears produce masses of white blossoms along their bare branches, and as an extra bonus, in autumn the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red before falling. These wonderfully hardy trees can tolerate air pollution, drought and heavy soil and that’s why they are grown throughout Mawson Lakes. They like full sun and they grow tall and narrow so they don’t take up much room. The end of winter is the perfect time to prune deciduous ornamental trees when they are fully defoliated. By winter the trees are dormant, however, inside important processes are underway. The trees are consolidating; resting and storing energy in the form of carbohydrates in the trunk and roots to enable them to grow and develop once spring hits the air and the promise of warmer weather is near.
The Salisbury Council election is fast approaching and it is time for you to think about who you want to lead this wonderful city. It has been an honour to represent the community as Mayor of the City of Salisbury for the last decade – and I hope to continue doing so for the next four years. I was elected in 1988 and served as Deputy Mayor from 2001-2008 before being elected as Mayor. During this time, I have helped shape Salisbury into a progressive city with world-class water recycling and wetlands, and inclusive multicultural programs. Recent projects I have supported include St Kilda tourism investment, Salisbury CBD development, the new Para Hills Library, and park upgrades. I have also advocated for the Northern Connector and Gawler railway electrification. I have pushed for more frequent verge mowing, road repairs, hard rubbish collection and quicker customer service responses. If re-elected, I will work to: • Decrease red-tape to remove problem trees • Bring forward play space renewals • Solve parking issues at Mawson Lakes and Salisbury interchanges • Address traffic issues on Shepherdson, Kings and Elder Smith roads, and Park Tce • Ensuring low-lease fees for sporting and community clubs • Fast-track community building refurbishment and boost solar panels Authorised by G Aldridge, 33 Santorini Walk, Mawson Lakes SA 5095. BEAU BRUG FOR COUNCIL When door-knocking I hear that illegal dumping and waste removal is constantly being raised. I can see that the suburb is changing and not for the better. That is why, I have organised with local service clubs ‘Clean Up Mawson Lakes Day’ and advocated at council to increase the frequency of maintenance and waste removal; as a result, from July 2018 residents have access to two FREE on-call hard waste removals a year. Also raised on the doorstop and at my Coffees with the Councillor was transparency for credit cards and travel of councillors and staff. Thus, I fought for increased council transparency on tax-payer funded credit cards of the CEO and General Managers and on travel costs of Elected Members and Staff, which are now both publicly displayed online. Reforms that have now been adopted across the state. It has been a busy year and a half, since my initial election but there is much more to be done. I thank you for your support in the byelection last year and I ask for your #1 vote to re-elect me to Council to continue to fight for our community. Every Vote Counts. If you wish to raise any council matter or would like to meet me please contact me. Please vote #1 Beau Brug for the election, voting is via postal vote from Monday 22nd Oct – 5pm Friday 9th November. I will be holding a Coffee with the Candidate on October 6th at La Vita 11am to listen to your council issues and ideas. Authorised by Beau Brug, P.O. Box 70, Pooraka 5095

FROM STEVE WHITE Council elections are coming up this month. (see page 3). Mawson Lakes presently has 2 elected members on Council. I am one of them and I am nominating for a second term of 4 years. I seek your vote. During my previous term, progress was made on CCTV in Mawson Central, bridge building, footpaths, seats and exercise equipment; but unfinished business remains as follows: *Improvement to up-stream weirs on Dry Creek to reduce the number of flooded crossings each year. *Resealing of the Dry Creek trail through to Pooraka *Connection over the railway bridge to cross Augustine St. *Duplication and extension of Elder Smith Road to the Northern Connector – with better slip-lane access from suburban roads to reduce congestion on Elder Smith Rd and Salisbury Hwy. Having served at RAAF Edinburgh for much of my career, I will continue to advocate for servicemen and veterans. After RAAF service I spent 26 years in the defence industry. This is a growth industry for the North that greatly interests me. I volunteer at Anglicare, participate in the Saturday Parkrun in Mawson Lakes and seek ways and means to encourage physical activity in our suburb. I am very committed to maintaining and enhancing our beautiful environment. Authorised by Steve White, Beechwood Ave, Mawson Lakes 5095

This week is designed to promote foot health awareness, and the importance of comfortable feet to keep you active and maintain quality of life. As a profession we are dedicated to get people who are inactive as a result of foot and leg pain back moving. It is timely to remember that our feet are our foundation. Working Towards The Future Remote controlled vehicles, robots, rockets and aeroplanes were just some of the machines on display at the UniSA Campus Day at Mawson Lakes last month. Engineering students were keen to talk about their projects and career direction. Mawson Lakes Living captured a few of the aspiring engineers who are working with industry to help shape the future.
"University researchers need to be aware of the changes in industry and apply their research to industry needs," said Jessie Webber and Claudia Binder from the Future Industries Institute on the Mawson Lakes campus. They were talking to students about the value of research and life after your degree.
"Freddy" is the remote controlled robot designed to promote the SA Country Fire Service, pictured with members of the Mechatronics, Engineering and Robotics Club (MERC). Undergraduate students Cory Pritchard and Joshua Fuller and post-graduate candidate Phil Skelton.
Father and son, Peter and Matthew Nagy, attended the open day to look at the course offering in Aviation and information Technology.
President of the UniSA Rocketry Club, Liam Mallamo, likes to build rockets, and Daniel Weninger who is studying mechanical and computer science works on the technology software inside the rockets. "There are many emerging career opportunities in aerospace and I love it," said Daniel.
Aviation students James Snowball and Eden Hansen are second year students studying to be pilots at UniSA - Australia’s university of enterprise.

Check and
Is this filling ‘permanent’? A common question at the dentist.
The mouth is a high wear and tear environment. We Dr Peter BDS exert extraordinary forces with ourBertossa bite and our teeth. Since the inception of Dentistry, scientists and engineers have been improving materials properties with respect to their tensile and compressive strength, ‘bond-ability’, aesthetics and biocompatibility. It has proven hard to get all of these properties in one material! Each material has a different application and the life span is highly dependent on the size of the cavity and overall strength of the tooth. Even then, how long something may last is a statistical guess.

Daffodils
by Nigella Dogs are not allowed on trains so it's not often you’ll see me at the Mawson Interchange, but on Daffodil Day I helped mummy sell daffodils and merchandise at the railway station to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Lauren Brewer from Mawson Lakes Lions, Julie Pickles from Lions Paralowie & Annette James, the community liaison officer with Cancer Council SA
Lots of volunteers were there and I saw many friends catching trains who came up to say hello to me. Here are some pictures of the good people buying daffodils. I love daffodils; they don’t have much smell but they are a brilliant colour and dogs do see the world in colour. Scientists are showing that it’s a misconception that dogs only see in monochrome. I see in colour, do you? Mawson Lakes raised $1250 on this morning for cancer research. Dogs get cancer too so this cause is close to my heart. Well done everyone. Right: Sherryl Ward from Mawson Lakes buying daffodils from Julie Pickles Far Right: Peter Archer bought a bunch of daffodils to take to work.

Cat Enclosures
by Bonnie
Hi Everyone, My name is Bonnie, I’m a cat and I want to tell you about my fabulous new cat enclosure. I’m 2 years old and I’ve never really been allowed outside (except with my family close by). Just recently my pet parents built me a cat enclosure of my very own. I think it’s so great that I can go out there whenever I want to. My favourite thing to do is to just sit outside on my shelf and soak up the sun. I have fun things to play with too, like tunnels, a wobbly bridge (which I was a little scared of at first, but mum HomepageHomepage - Aristocat- Aristocat EnclosuresEnclosures showed me that it’s not so scary), some grass and scratching posts. My family comes outside too and we all play together. I also like to sit up high on my shelf and gaze over the fence at the HomeHome AboutAbout Us What Us We What DoWe Do cars going by, or the children across the road GalleryGallery Contact Contact Us Us playing.
A cat flap from the laundry makes it easy for me to get out at any time. Some other enclosures or cubby houses for cats can be separate from the house and your owner can put you out there to play or laze in the sun but I like the independence of going outside for some fresh air and a look around whenever I fancy. It’s very safe out there for me too. A few times I’ve ventured out our front door and there was a car coming that nearly bowled me over. With my safety net all around me, I’m safe from cars or getting into fights with other cats in the neighbourhood, or cat-unfriendly dogs, and there are lots of these in our street that think it’s fun to chase cats. This is my very own cat sanctuary. Maybe your owner could build one for you too.
