Profile My name is Max and I am a design student currently studying architecture in Nanyang Polytechnic. Curiosity is a part of me that I strongly embrace it trying to understand how things work. Making drawings as record of my observation started in secondary school and taking architecture in poly was a natural choice for me. I enjoy the subjects like design studios, construction and urban design. I am managing good using the digital tools like Revit and Rhino to do my projects. Sketching and drawings are skills I continue to practice when free. I enjoy working together with groups of people and look forward to every new task assigned. Collaboration allows me to learn from others and my design improves with time. I enjoy learning since young and have taken up some design workshops and events to satisfy my curiosity about design and my quest for knowledge. My participation in bamboo workshop and NYP Coop theatre project was my way to sustain my interest in hands-on projects. I hope the internship will add new perspectives to my learning and open up new experiences for me. Portfolio: https://issuu.com/maxchia/docs/maximillian_chia_chee_chen

FINAL YEAR PROJECT THE HEALING THEATRE OF BOTANICS AND PERFORMANCE The Healing Theatre of Botanics and Performance is a project based along Balestier Road. Here we were tasked to pick a site and identify a topic learnt from our 3 years of study. Utilising several strands from the brief, Time Odyssey In a City of Lost memories, we identified a topic and based our research to create a new way of living from the magic of the site.

The project combines the aspect of Balestier’s famous Hoover Rojak hawker, and his humble past, with that of the Hoover Theatre, where he once sold in front of. Through combining the spaces of the Theatre and the growing elements of the Rojak Ingrediants as well as the making of the Rojak to create a new way of living for the communities of Balestier

TOPIC IDENTIFICATION STREET HAWKER What does food mean to the people of Balestier? What happened to the Street Hawkers? The initial topic and context identified was on street hawkers and their history. It was also essential that the chapter on food and meaning to the people of Balestier be covered as well.

GURU IDENTIFICATION One of the few surviving street hawkers was Mr Nigel Lim. He is a Rojak Seller and his famous stall Hoover Rojak had its name adapted from the Theatre that he used to sell his Rojak in front of. Here I identify how he made and sell his Rojak. Upon further research, I also found out that Rojak Hawkers obtain their ingrediants fresh from the Backyard. The next guru naturally was the Theatre. This was so as there must be some sort of relation between the Rojak seller and the theatre and I decided to explore and identify that relationship.

COLLAGING By identifying what function suites what space, a collage was formed. This would combine the growing aspect of Rojak plants with theatre spaces. The main 3 spaces formed were: 1. The Nursing Box 2. The Walk of the Luminance seller 3. Grids of the Flying plants Since these theatrical spaces suites and help facilitate the functioning of the spaces, they were merged togather to create a new way of living and a new program and function for this new Theatre

DESIGN EXPERIMENTATION To seal the final concept, the general form would revolve around the concept of the Rojak mixing. Here the Grids will follow the track of how the Rojak mixing process would follow. With this framework in mind, the rest of the layout will fall into place. After which, variations of the model and structure will come into play. This is to find the best suitable design for the concept as well as for structure testing and site analysis.

Genius in Nature

The Genius in Nature Project: The Immortal Jellyfish The Genius in Nature Project is a design proccess that aims to teach or learn from Nature. Utilising the wisdom from nature to inform us of a new method of designing a new spatial order in Architecture. Utilising from the methodology of Biomimicry, designers are set to pick a unique organism from Mother Nature and learn from it its unique way of living. The process also teaches designers not to design from their ego but rather let the Guru inform us of unique Spaces, Programs and Functions, Structures and a New Way of Living. The Guru chosen here is a Jellyfish. The Immortal Jellyfish, Turritopsis Dohrnii the Scientific name, is a perculiar and unique organism to which was taken to study. This Jellyfish is known to be biologically Immortal.

Step 1 : Observation and Identifying a Genius The Immortal Jellyfish The Immortal Jellyfish also known as the Turritopsis Dohrnii, is widely known for its biologically long, if not, endless life-span. The Jellyfish has been noted to have been able to revert to a younger-self and stay biologically Immortal and hence its name.

Reproduction The Jellyfish also incorporates a unique reproductive lifecycle. The Jellyfish is known to be able to reproduce through Cloning and, in later stages, Mating. During a certain stage, the Jellyfish becomes a Plant-like organism before eventually becoming a Jellyfish.

Life-Cycle During a certain stage, the Jellyfish becomes a Plant-like organism before eventually becoming a Jellyfish. The Jellyfish is also known to be able to mass produce in swarms when in this Plant-Like organism.

Systems and Structure The Turritopsis Dohrnii is also unique as its organs only consist of few tissues and a really simple digestive tract. The Jellyfish also lacks a fully functioning brain but in its replacement, has a highly sensitve and delicate lining of intelligent Nerves.

Step 2 : Formation and Dissection Mimesis

The Jellyfish was than studied upon in meticulous detail from birth to death and rebirth. Much of its documentation were rather old dating almost 1 century ago when they were discovered. So to be able to study the Jellyfish in great detail, several videos detailing their process were broken down. The focus did not simply restrict itself only to the transformation process but its movements and reproductions were also studied. Afterwhich, it became important to identify a unifying pattern in the Guru. There were several approaches that one could take. However, I chose to follow upon the Guru’s unique process pattern which was its transformation stage. Using simple models and diagrams the Process of Transformation was learnt and brought to life.

Step 3 : Systemisation and Abstraction Method

In this step, we are encouraged to identify a process behind the pattern we have identified earlier. Through the use of several models and diagrams, we are to establish a process behind the pattern. This process can be with regards to movements or a method of the Guru’s living style like eating. In the case of the Jellyfish, the pattern established was the shrinking behaviour of the Jellyfish and how it progresses into a polyp and eventually back to a full grown Jellyfish. Using some bamboo models, I was trying to identify a process behind the pattern of transformation. One was the shrinking behaviour of the Radial canals and the second was the reduction and multiplication of cells.

Step 4: Ordering and Transformation Metamorphosis This physical model is meant ti study the flexibility of the Jellyfish structure. The model is made of simple paper and held together by paper clips. The model forms the Radial canal of the Jellyfish.

Next comes the variation of the form. This model constructed from Bamboo was intended to create the different stages of the Jellyfish to study the different stages of the which the Jellyfish is at. The stages shows the transformation of the Jellyfish from Adult back to when it was a Polyp.

Stuctural variation is also studied upon. The model built here is intended to best recreate the strong yet flexible Jellyfish form. It also incorporates a simple folding segment to recreate the Jellyfish transformation.

This final model is made from a method learnt earlier the Year before. Applying the techniques of reciprocal frams. The technique is known for creating strong yet flexible structures which could stand on its own without any support from pillars or columns.

Step 5: Revelation of a new space Metaphysics

Further studies of the Jellyfish were directed towards its internal organs and its functions. This is give the form function. By dissecting how the Jellyfish works, the organs will than create unique spaces for us to live in and a new way of life too. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

With the formation of the spaces complete, the next step would be to divise a schedule of accommadation and also perhaps a process in which to show the flow of how the building would work. Once again, the Guru is pulled up and studied in detail on its systems and how does it the Guru function. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

Step 6: Appropriation of form into function Programming a space. Mystic Buildability Here the buildability of the Project is tackled solving all the technicalities of the design such as structure and circulation. Once again, we turn to the Guru to solve any pressing matters.

Site and Environmental Analysis The site to be picked was that of one that suited the Guru. As such for this project naturally it would be in the sea. Here the environmental and site analysis was conducted to allow the building sit nicely on the site.

Finals and presentation All the finishing touches are set here. All preparations and final renders are set here all to be completed within a week or two.

Travels in parallel reality

Travels in Parallel Reality is a Project that Journeys Students back to the past to rediscover and learn from the past. This project attempts to superimpose two seemingly unrelated realities together, to displace us from our current environment by transporting us into the hyperreality of another space time as another persona within our environment. It is done by shifting the point of view into that of a Guru in order to see the familiarity of the everyday and our own environment/culture with a fresh eye.

In this studio, we travelled into a parallel reality back in time to discover the secrets, dreams or losses of a city. By creating a travelogue to systematically document our parallel life in the past. This travelogue serves as a personalized data which can also be combined into a collective information to form an overall psychogeographic map of the area. They shall provide an alternative way to study spaces, surroundings and the everyday, allowing us to reapply the findings into a new program for your design.

PART 1 PREPARATION INTO HYPERREALITY In part 1.1+1.2, Students are tasked with choosing a site, finding out about its past and choose a Guru from that past to study in detail about. In this case, the site Ellenborough Market was taken into considereation and under study. Then we picked a Guru and learn about his work, timeline of daily activities and where and how he conduct himself at the work place. Here I found out more about Mr Heng, a merchantman by trade. I learnt about the existance of the Ellenborough market and how it functions through him. I also learn how he conducted his business.

PART 2 SERENDIPITY I,II AND DOCUMENTATION In part 2 of the Project, we are tasked to dress up and try to experience to our best the experience of the Guru we picked and document our findings. We would then go to the site and follow a itinery map would devise from Part 1 and journey through as though we are the Guru but living in the present world. Here we also document any key elements, unique trades and physical elements of the site.

PART 3 DOCUMENT & ANALYSE By placing the site elements following the Guru, we juxtaposed the past into the present. This would help us create new forms, functions and programs. We also create timelines of activities by studying how the Guru’s work. The timeline are created by using physical elements and how they do their work.

PART 4 DOCUMENT, ANALYSE & SPECULATE

With juxtaposition of 2D collages, we try to make a 3D collage from the 2D ones.

PART 5 SPECULATE, EXPERIMENT & EVOLVE From 3D paper models, we would then attempt to create a 3D model with objects that can best represent that of the collages. Here we would also test constructability and the formation of spaces.

URBAN ANALYSIS: CLARKE QUAY Urban Analysis is a module that focus on teaching students to be aware of Singapore in the Urban Context and to train to see things from an Urban Planner. It teaches students on how to extract and see Urban Elements in a different light.

The presentation of the second part of the project is done in a collage style poster. It requires the chosen analysis done in part 1 to speculate the potential types of changes Singapore will face. The topic chosen in this case was FLooding City.

In this particular project, Students are set to picked a site to study and extract Urban elements of the site. Thereafter, they would have to analyse the area and the potential changes to it in 50 years after. Students are then encouraged to make the wildest prediction amongst several topics of choice.

Urban Analysis also teaches students to analyse from Street sections and to study the city plan from scales of 1:5000 to 1:7500. We are also encouraged to study with different types of project as references.

International Design Workshop

INternational Design Workshop : The KJ METHOD International Workshop is a workshop hosted and held for several International Countries. It aims to allow students from different Countries to come together discuss, plan and design. This Workshop was no different in that as Students from China, Korea, Japan and Singapore came together to discuss and design under a unifying theme. This workshop also encourages students from all of the different design discplines to come together to design and learn from each other. As the workshop was held during the opening year

of the Covid 19, naturally the theme would be about the Covid. Students are then tasked utilisng a process called the KJ method to come up with a design after interpreting and finding out a root problem in society. This project has no boundaries or restrictions hence students can use and design anything from small phone objects to whole Architecture. In this case, our group came up with a Table Partition that aims to allow workers to interact while still being properly distanced.
