Abstract

It’s seven o’clock. The sound of church bells chime from my phone. I find the screen; slide my finger across the glass and its gone. I stare at the ceiling. The pale weathered brown paint weighs over my head. The winter cold seeps through the pores of the walls and the fear of the first step to the floor teeters on the edge of my mind. For now I am tethered under the covers, the weight of warmth, a captive partner against the morning. My room, this room, dissolves from the horizon. I find my Levis, I find my vans. Blue on black. The narrative, the places, and the sites acted within, construct my reality that I share through physicality. Conceptual, cultural, societal placement mirrors my physical placement and defines the world by the tension between the differing poles of my mental and physical states. Bound by this opposition, mental/physical sites present opportunities for the regularity of life to be realized, defined, and illuminated. Embedded in the truth of physicality, within the site of exchange, is the possibility of a relational exposition of new realities. By manipulating time, distance, material, composition, I am attempting to illuminate the magnificent of the mundane as an actor of tacit opposition. Through my work I am exploring the use of opposition and tension to enliven otherwise trivial or banal objects. Through this reconfiguration I want to unbridle meaning to finds new truths within the composition of my physical manipulations.

Content 6-15

Re-Contectualize: using an existing subsystem I reconfigured these drawings in the BEB gallery.

17-45

Water of Color: through the use of water color a regular capturing of my everyday.

46-

Captured Walk: a capturing of my commute to work.

20-23

Boxed Days: using a range of objects I boxed them in a custom box made daily.

Part 1a Re-Contextualize This installation was a first attempt to create a reorganization of an object that, although interesting, needed the reference of the gallery to be elevated to a higher level of importance. The installation used the found artifacts of the gallery and a collection of landscape architecture student project copies from the 1950’s.

Part 2 Captured Walk Using my walk to school as a basis for capturing and analyzing the everyday world I took pictures, framed within a specific category catalogued everything from graffiti to ornamentation. Through this I wanted to capture my everyday life through visual repetition.

Part 4 Boxed Days 3 Weeks 15 boxes 15 railroad spikes 15 maps 15 found objects 15 pieces of glass 15 plaster molds 15 pieces of writing Through the articulation of a box and the objects within I began an exploration in what a day is and how to represent that day. These boxes are artifacts of those fifteen days that spanned three weeks. Through the creation of visual and physical tension I hoped to explore the ideas presented in my abstract.
