Volunteers participate in something fishy

On a beautiful spring morning in mid-November, Cummins Carole Park volunteers gathered at Somerset Dam to support the Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association’s (SWFSA) release of 67,000 bass fingerlings.

The small but mighty youngsters were released into the dam to mark the start of the annual fish stocking season, where native Australian fish are released into public waterways for recreational fishing enhancement and to boost ecosystems. The young fish also serve as primary predators for introduced pest species like tilapia, keeping them under control. Cummins’ Industrial and Marine Sales Executive Steven Micallef, a long-serving senior member of SWFSA, was at the helm to coordinate volunteers for the aquatic species release. Steve and his team rolled up their sleeves and threw off their shoes to get among the fun of the day. With the support of volunteers, SWFSA has served the community for 33 years. Between 2020 and 2022, more than one million different species of native fingerlings have been released across the Wivenhoe, Somerset and Brisbane River catchments.

Many thanks to Sales Administrator Natasha Darlington and her family and Phase Leader Tino Nastro and his son Tony for volunteering to support this community event.
